New Year, New You

By Mary Jane Bogle

I’m not usually one to make New Year’s resolutions. Goodness knows there’s plenty of room for improvement in my life. I could always exercise more, eat less or do a better job of organizing the linen closet. The problem is, those goals sound much nicer when I write them down in December than they do in January when I actually have to do something about them.

Procrastinator—or optimist?

Perhaps, deep down, I’m not so much a procrastinator as I am an eternal optimist, hoping that some magic pill or personal assistant will take care of those weight-loss or organization goals for me. Sadly, the world just doesn’t work that way. No matter how much I glare at it, that pile of laundry is never going to jump off the coffee table, saunter down the hallway and tuck itself neatly into the drawers. Those extra pounds I want to lose are not going to melt away on their own.

So this year, instead of making unrealistic resolutions, I’m going to follow one simple principle that will help me reach my goals—and kick that procrastination habit for good.

Taking care of my “future self”

The next time I’m tempted to avoid some dreaded task, I’m going to ask myself this simple question, “What will my ‘future self’ think about that? Does ‘future self’ really want to face a mound of dirty dishes stacked on the kitchen counter tomorrow morning?” If the answer is “no,” then I’ll do my future self a favor and wash those dishes now. She’ll be so happy to wake up to a bright, clean kitchen. This principle works for weight loss, too. I’m pretty sure that future Mary Jane doesn’t want to exercise for an extra hour tomorrow morning—or starve herself for half the day—just so that current Mary Jane can eat that super deluxe, double-chocolate fudge brownie right now. Even better, with a little extra meal planning, my future self can stave off cravings with a healthy diet, decreasing the urge to binge.

The applications are limitless, really. Start a gratitude journal now so I can look back on all my blessings at the end of the year. I’m pretty sure taking five extra minutes to wash off makeup and apply a toner and moisturizer at the end of the day will make me MUCH happier when I look in the mirror, not just tomorrow but years down the road. Setting aside one afternoon to purge clothes I no longer wear will leave my future self with a clean, organized closet to face each day. And cracking down on spending through a yearly budget just might net me that dream vacation, as long as my current self doesn’t overspend.

Forget about those nagging New Year’s resolutions. I can meet all my goals, just by taking care of my future self today. Now that’s a promise I can keep. a
