THE HOLIDAY ISSUE 2016 There are some changes coming in the next year. After nine years of owning and running The Old Print Gallery, Inc., in Washington, DC, I am sad to report we will be closing the shop.

The Old Print Gallery, Inc., was founded by Judy Blakely, Jim Blakely, and James von Ruster in 1972, a few doors down from the current location.

They moved into 1220 31st Street, NW a few years after opening.

The inventory of The Old Print Gallery was similar to The Old Print Shop, specializing in American art from the 18th and 19th centuries. Therefore, it was a logical fit nine years ago when we purchased the gallery.

However, the business environment is changing rapidly. More and more people are purchasing only over the internet, and expenses of land based business continue to increase. On the positive side we are keeping the name and good will of The Old Print Gallery, Inc. If the situation changes, we might well be back in DC in the future. Also because, my inventory in New York City is bursting at the seams, it was decided to offer substantial discounts on the items in our Washington, DC gallery – a bonus for collectors.

I would like to remind everyone that we offer museum quality custom framing. However, it takes time to build custom frames, so please do not wait until the last minute to complete that framing project. Great work takes time.

We wish everyone a joyous Holiday Season and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

Vue-optique images from the late eighteenth century were some of the first attempts. Then came the optical images which are what these are. Each has a spot where the viewer places his/her chin and looks upon the image.Due to the extreme perspective, the buildings appear to have a 3-D quality.

LETTERIO CALAPAI Letterio Calapai “A printmaker for the twentieth century w[1]” was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1902. He frequented the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, where he was exposed to many great masterpieces. He studied at the Massachusetts Normal Art School, today known as the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In 1928 he moved to New York City to study at the Art Students League and the Beau Arts Institute of Design.

To support himself he was working for a commercial lithographer. When one of his professors noticed that he was not spending as much time on his own work, he helped Calapai get financing, so he could spend more time creating his own work. It allowed the artist to immerse himself in his work which led to his first oneartist show at the Montross Gallery in 1934.

After the show at the Montross Gallery, Calapai actively took up printmaking, creating wood engravings and woodcuts. In 1946 he worked at Atelier 17 with Stanley William Hayter and mastered the engraving technique and explored abstract art. He taught at the Albright Art School in Buffalo, the New School for Social Research and established the Intaglio Workshop for Advanced Printmaking in New York. In 1962 he married Jean Hillard and later moved to Glencoe, Illinois, where he continued to create art until his death on March 29, 1993.
