HOLIDAY ISSUE Happy Holidays to all! It is now a year since our move from 150 Lexington Avenue to 49 West 24th Street. We are all enjoying our new location. It is a beautiful gallery, so if you are in the area, come and visit. I want to encourage all readers of Portfolio to join the American Historical Print Collectors Society. The group was founded in 1975 and has expanded its interest beyond where it began. Currently, the group covers American art under the term of American historical prints, which covers a wide swath of time right up to today. If you are interested in collecting American art, it publishes four newsletters a year and two issues of Imprint, the magazine of the association. You will also be invited to events that happen around the United States, private viewings in museums and in homes of collectors. The association hosts an annual meeting, usually in May. A one-year membership is $50. You can join by entering this link: https://ahpcs.org/product/membership/ We plan to restart our program of exhibitions in the gallery. If you would like to be on our e-mail list, please send a request to be added to nnewman@oldprintshop.net

54. A Front View of Yale-College, and the College Chapel, in New-Haven. Printed by Daniel Bowen, New Haven. Woodcut, 1786. Sheet size 21 x 18 1/2” (53.4 x 46.8 cm). Fair to good condition. At one time this print was folded into eight panels with some loss along the folds. It has been professionally conserved and backed with rice-paper. Original handcoloring. Stokes, Historical Prints of New Haven, Connecticut #10; American Printmaking, the first 150 years, #78. #66218-2 $110,000.00 A very rare 18th-century American broadside. Framed in antique 18th-century black wood molding. “This charming-colored woodcut is a precursor of the modern-day college catalog, complete with a history of the institution, a list of its courses of study, and illustrations of the buildings and students. The bewigged figure in cap and gown seen from the rear proceeding toward the chapel steps, to whom several students on the right doff their caps, probably represents the Rev. Ezra Stiles, renowned lawyer, linguist, and scholar, who was president of Yale College from 1778 until 1795.” Wendy Shadwell
