Avrom adds retail store to go with pop-up markets

Reporter enjoys smooth ride on Schramer’s Hovertoon When I first met Berlin Mayor Richard Schramer, it was about a year ago and I was working on a story about the Berlin Boat Club and the Eureka Lock.

I met him at his house, and we rode his pontoon from his home in Berlin to the lock, so I could

When we returned to his house, Schramer showed me his garage, which housed the prototype for his patented Hovertoon.

I was amazed, and began asking him about it. He explained the Hovertoon is part pontoon and part hovercraft.

and can switch between pontoon mode and hovercraft mode.

When in hovercraft mode, the pontoons fold out, a large cushion below fills with air, the motor hums and the propellers in the back begin to spin.

At the time, Schramer was excited because he had finally completed the prototype, which took

years of working in “phases.”

“I made a model first just to see what it would look like,” he said. “Then I made a test platform, which was a wooden silhouette of a pontoon. I took that out on land and tested the engines, and then I invested some money in a pontoon deck for the prototype.”

This summer, Schramer is even more excited because he’s discovered that his prototype works like a dream.

Schramer began testing the vessel last fall, but this summer he’s been trying to push it farther to find anything that needs

to be tweaked, posting photos and videos to the “Hovertoon” Facebook page.

So far, he noted the longest voyage the Hovertoon has taken has been on a 10-mile trip up river a few months ago.

up with Schramer to discuss the progress made since he began testing the vessel, and he gave me an opportunity to test the vessel alongside him.

I met Schramer in the garage where he crafted the Hovertoon.

Schramer explained that he hasn’t had to make any major

adjustments to the prototype, but he’s working on a redesigned skirt underneath.

He then backed the vessel out of the garage and inflated the cushion below. I hopped on and we took off for the water.

— and into the water, without a bump or any discomfort for those aboard.

Once in the water, we took off down the river, over a sandbar and back. Hovering over the water, while zooming back and forth was exhilarating.

From where I was sitting, the Hovertoon steered like a dream.

Schramer had no trouble maneuvering over the water, as we did donuts on the Fox River.

Schramer played around for about a half an hour before we returned to land, with no trouble transitioning out of the river.

The experience was a lot of fun, the ride was smooth as silk and it felt really cool to be gliding over the water.

While it’s been rewarding to transform the vessel from an idea on paper to a working prototype, Schramer is still looking for a manufacturer.

“They say, ‘If you build it they will come,’ but they haven’t come yet,” he joked about the situation.

Despite little interest from manufacturers, Schramer believes the Hovertoon has a variety of uses ranging from search-and-rescue operations to recreational boating activities.

“Say a hurricane comes through and you need to get to someone; you can deploy the pontoon and go right down flooded streets,” Schramer said.

“If you have early spring fishing or late fall fishing, where the shoreline’s frozen, just set this down in the parking lot, drive it right onto the ice and enter the water and go out and fish.”

I sincerely hope an established manufacturer reaches out to Schramer to add the Hovertoon to its product line. It’s a unique vessel that is a ton of fun to play around in. And in Green Laker Country, fun is the name of the game.

Four friends, one dream Avrom Farm partners strive to impact broader community

When restaurants closed in March for dine-in service to slow the spread of COVID-19, Avrom Farm lost all of its restaurant accounts almost overnight.

At the same time, all of the winter farmers markets in the area were canceled due to the pandemic, further impacting the farm’s cashflow.

“When the farmers markets shut their doors, it was terrifying because that along with restaurant sales is really how we get through winter,” owner Hayden Holbert said.

To compensate for the lost revenue, Avrom Farm launched an online store to offer its product catalog, along with a selection of products from other local farms.

The online store took off as the farmers markets and restaurants that did business with Avrom Farm began sharing the store with their followers on social media.

The farm began delivering locally grown produce anywhere and everywhere, but primarily to Milwaukee and Chicago.

“It caught on instantly and it overwhelmed us for several months with the influx of orders,” Holbert said.

Digital sales quickly began to exceed the farm’s capacity, at W0908 Scott Hill Rd. in Ripon, so Holbert and his business partners — Andy Sotter, Lydia Nye and Sara Abolt — purchased a warehouse and retail space at 601

“With this space, we’re actually able to have some breathing room and focus on doing a really good job of bringing people amazing food,” Holbert said.

The group plans to convert the property into the Avrom Farm Store, a brick-and-mortar local grocery and garden store that will open next year.

“Being young people, we all have time and energy, but no money,” Sotter said. “Being able to come at this together ... and to impact the broader community is something we strive for.”

In the meantime, Avrom Farm is hosting pop-up markets at the retail space each Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering meats, produce, dry goods, dairy, eggs and more.

Holbert noted the purpose of the storefront and pop-up market is to engage with the local com-

munity.

“We want to bring people to a space and really show them how we raise food and how these other farms raise food,” he said. “We also want to make this an event space, and we’re going to have a big garden in the back with seating for farm-to-table dinners.”

In addition to selling food and hosting events, the storefront also would serve as a garden store, carrying seedlings, organic potting mix and fertilizer.

Holbert hopes the space can become a place where the community can learn about organic farming and the benefits of sustainable agriculture practices.

“We’re really trying to connect food production to food consumption, where you can walk outside and see kale growing and then buy it in our store,” Holbert said. “And then you can buy a kale seedling and put it in your garden at home.”

Holbert describes Avrom Farm’s style of farming as “regenerative agriculture,” which requires “using the ecosystem services of livestock to benefit

vegetable production.”

“We’re using each enterprise on the farm to reduce the inputs that we use and to increase biodiversity on the farm,” he said. “We make our own compost using a manure and straw mixture that gets spread across our fields and supplies the nutrients for a large portion of our vegetables.”

To fill the storefront with locally grown produce, Avrom Farm is looking to partner with other local farmers.

Partners won’t be required to be certified organic farmers, but the farm will choose partners based on their practices and prices.

“We want to continue growing to produce an amount of food that makes a significant impact in our regional food economy,” he said.

“By doing that and scaling up, we’re able to give opportunities to people that want to farm but do not necessarily have access to everything that’s involved in starting a farm.”

Discovering the beauty in the grain Local man describes the joy he gains from his hobby: woodworking

After turning a new wood and epoxy bowl on his lathe, town of Brooklyn resident Gary Hazelberg added the finishing polish.

And as he witnessed the final product, emotions welled-up in him. He shed a tear, amazed at the beauty that emerged from what was once a burl — a tree growth in which the wood grain grows in a deformed manner.

“I was so excited. I gave a hoot out here [in my wood shop],” Gary said. “... I know it sounds goofy, but ... people just have a creative side; obviously, I have a strong one.”

Though a burl is typically formed when a tree undergoes stress, such as an injury, virus, fungus, insect infestation or mold growth, and may appear as a blemish on a tree trunk, Gary sees the beauty that can be found within the burl.

“All the grain gets all [wonky and] it’s not straight anymore, so it’s really pretty,” Gary said. “So then I got to look at it and [think], ‘OK, how do I want to cut that thing?’ … And then, ‘What do I want to make out of it?’You kind of picture it and you open it up.

And of course it’s nature; you never know what you’re going to get … which makes it more fun.”

Gary views that as one of the most enjoyable aspects of woodworking — a hobby he has cherished since he taught himself woodcarving as a high-schooler.

He believes his passion for woodworking stems from growing up in a creative family, with several of his seven siblings pursuing or engaging in art.

“My family’s always been very creative,” Gary said. “My brother graduated with a degree in fine art. His wife is a very

talented artist. And it’s just something that’s always [been a part of my life].”

Though he has a passion for woodworking, Gary did not pursue a career in that field. Instead he worked as a salesman for a heating and cooling company and eventually became a sales manager.

Now, Gary is semi-retired as he travels around the country, instructing others on business and sales skills.

But in his spare time, he can be found in his workshop, whittling away wood or turning a bowl on his lathe, which were activities that helped him ease the stress from his work.

“I always say that ‘If I’m not covered in sawdust once a week, you don’t want to be around me.

I’m a grumpy guy,’” Gary said with a chuckle.

After years of woodcarving, Gary bought a metal wood lathe from a school district about five years ago and taught himself how to turn wood, creating bowls, urns, pots and more.

“I would say it’s an addiction; I’ve tried to get away from it over the years,” Gary said. “In fact, we used to live in Ripon and in a house that we really liked. And then I just did so much woodworking it was creating dust in the house and [we] said ‘We got to do something else.’ So we moved to a different house [out here in the town of Brooklyn].”

never sure if the individual enjoys the gift.

“I like giving things away.

It’s nice to be able to just give something to somebody and it makes you nervous, whether they really like it or they’re just [being nice],” he said, recalling the year he did not carve a Santa figurine for his mother.

He explained he would carve a lot of Santas years ago, and every year, he would gift one to his mom for Christmas.

“She would never really say much, my mom, so one year, I thought, ‘She doesn’t really care,’ so I didn’t make her one,” Gary said.

However, when Christmas came around and the family was

Gary explained he created a unique dinner table that his wife designed along with a headboard and foot-board. He also made several dressers and other pieces of furniture within the home as well as decorative bowls.

Gary explained such gifts ranged from wooden rocking horses for his grandchildren to hand-carved Santas for his mother.

However, when he gives away one of his wood pieces, he is

visiting his mom at the nursing home, his mom asked “Where’s my Santa?”

Gary explained to her that he didn’t think she liked them.

The nurses who overheard the exchange corrected him, noting that was not the case.

“Some of the nurses [that] were there go, ‘Oh, no, everybody has to see her Santa that her son carves,’” Gary recalled. “‘She was telling everybody that she was going to get another Santa this year and then you didn’t bring one. She was really mad.’ I’m like, ‘OK, I’ll whip one out quick,’ and I had some that I had made, so I just gave her one.”

Some of his gifts are not always for such joyous occasions as Christmas or birthdays. Gary explained he carves angels for

individuals who may be going through a rough patch in life “and need some love.”

He also carves comfort birds, which he gifts to people who “are having a hard time. And it’s a really relaxing thing. There’s an article that I found [the idea] on that I just copied from a guy that if you rub the [bird’s] tail it just gives you something for your excess energy to do when you’re worried about something. So when someone’s going through a hard time I’ll make them a comfort bird and give it to them. I’ve made a couple dozen of those over the years and given them to other people.”

Despite sharing his wooden pieces with numerous friends and family, Gary still had numerous bowls but no place to store

them. He decided to sell them three years ago on Etsy, an online marketplace where individuals can sell their creations.

“The only reason I started the Etsy site — you saw how many bowls [there were]. There’s more,” Gary said. “I mean, my wife has cabinets of them because I just love doing it. So, I ended up with all these bowls and I’ve got to get rid of them.

They’ve got to go somewhere.”

Gary also sells his bowls at local shops in Green Lake, such as Green Lake Mercantile and Sassafras, a coffee shop that has his bowls on display for purchase.

Though Gary tries to sell his bowls, he noted he does not make a profit from them since the hours spent and the materials used to create the bowls would

price them at several hundred dollars, which is much more than he asks for.

“It doesn’t even pay for the supplies,” Gary said of the money he makes. “[But] it does [bring me joy], to be honest with you.”

Should anyone wonder where Gary may be, they just might find him out in his shop, whittling away at a comfort bird, turning a new bowl or imagining a new wooden creation to try his hand at.

GL tourism is weathering the pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has caused a migration of sorts in Green Lake as summer tourism has been better than originally anticipated, given the cancellation of many events.

According to Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Beck, there are a couple of reasons for that migration.

Among them are residents who have homes on the lake staying for a more sustained period than in other years. Additionally, families are relocating to Green Lake from larger metropolitan settings and buying homes on the lake.

Many of the area’s summer residents, who normally may have stayed for a week here or there throughout the season, have decided to remain in Green Lake for the summer.

Reasons for staying vary; some are avoiding large crowds in big cities, while others are working remotely from Green Lake and don’t need to return home for work.

“In the beginning, if people were here when we locked down, they remained here. For a couple months, they didn’t go back to their homes in Illinois,” Beck said. “So we did see that spike in people that were here that are taking advantage of their summer home and using it as a year-round home.”

In addition to summer residents remaining in the area, Beck also is seeing an influx of vacationers coming to Green Lake for a day trip.

people that are in the state of Wisconsin that are really researching ‘Where can we go?’

And they’re packing up and doing last-minute vacation planning and coming here,” Beck said.

As a result, she noted Green Lake’s parks, boat launches, bike trails and Big Green Lake itself have been busier than last summer.

“One of my hotel owners said they were down 80% in sales

in May, and then June was a record month for them,” Beck said. “June was when we really started seeing an uptick in people coming here. July was by far the highest and now in August people are still coming.”

According to Beck, the area’s cabins and cottages near the lake, where families can rent a dwelling are doing “very well.”

“People are coming, renting the whole house and spending a week staying here in Green

Lake,” Beck said. “I talked to one of my board members and she had people in the driveway of her bed and breakfast calling her, asking if she had a room available, like literally driving

around looking for a place to spend the weekend.”

Even so, she noted the area’s hotels and motels are operating at 50% capacity as they face tougher social distancing

restrictions and rooms are required to remain vacant between guests.

In terms of real estate, another board member told Beck that the industry is “going crazy.”

“People are buying homes and relocating,” she said. “He had mentioned that there were a handful of people that bought homes in Green Lake that are from out of state and they’re actually enrolling their children into the Green Lake School District.”

The influx of summer residents, day trippers and new residents has given Green Lake’s downtown businesses a significant boost.

“I’m hearing great things about how busy it’s been in town and we’re hoping everyone is staying safe and following our safety guidelines that all of our stores and restaurants are implementing,” Beck said. “I think that they’re doing their part in making people feel safe when they do come to visit.”

She added that Green Lake

County’s ability to keep its coronavirus case load relatively low has also contributed to the boost in tourism.

“One of the guests that had stayed at one of our bed and breakfasts said, ‘I looked at Green Lake’s numbers and they’re down. And I felt comfortable coming to Green Lake to vacation,’” Beck said.

As of Aug. 17, Green Lake County had four active cases and 63 total confirmed cases, according to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

While pandemic tourism has given a financial boost to downtown shops and restaurants, Beck noted performance venues, such as the Thrasher Opera House still cannot operate at full capacity.

“They’re hurting a little bit, but they’re trying to make due with outdoor events and just trying to readjust,” she said.

“We’re hosting this event,” Beck said. “Some may not agree that it should be taking place but we’re doing everything in our power to make it safe.”

While the planning is still in the early stages, she noted precautions include increased spacing between vendors, “oneway” signs for foot traffic at the

Harvest of Bargains rummage sale and mandatory masking for vendors.

The chamber has eliminated the Harvest Fest beer garden, but local restaurants will host mini-beer gardens in an effort to create physical distance between people.

Overall, Beck is thrilled with the influx of people in the com-

munity and she hopes people can safely enjoy Harvest Fest next month.

“Green Lake has always been known for the beauty and relaxation of the area,” she said.

“I think people are drawn here because it gives them the charm of a small town and they’re embracing that because they’re coming to get out of the big city.”

Behind dedicated employees, community support Town Square continues to thrive

If you walked through downtown Green Lake on a bright summer day in 2012, there’s a chance you saw Phil Burkart mowing the Town Square Community Center’s lawn.

Eight years later, he’s still helping in whatever way he can.

In the early days, Town Square was a scrappy, upstart non-profit, working to transform a dilapidated courthouse into a vibrant community center.

“We had no budget; we started with nothing,” board member Burkart said of the early days.

“We paid $1 for the building from the county and we inherited $50,000 of [utility] bills before we ever had anything going in here.”

At the time, to cut costs for landscaping the property, Burkart and other volunteers handled mulching, watering, trimming bushes, raking and mowing the lawn.

Over the years, as Town Square evolved to become a hub of activity in Green Lake, it was able to hire private firms to complete the landscaping in the summer.

“We started with a very, very small budget but a solid business plan, and we’ve grown the community center according to that plan, step by step,” Burkart said. “When the building belonged to the county, tax dollars paid the utility bills and upkeep.

used to support the Town Square Community Center.”

While Town Square celebrated eight years of serving the community Tuesday, Aug. 11, Burkart noted the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the nonprofit to return to its roots.

“This year is in some ways kind of like eight years ago, where we have the same ‘roll up your sleeves and figure out a way to get it done’ attitude that we had back then,” Burkart said.

When he looked at the community center’s budget this year, Burkart decided to take the lawn mower out of storage to save money because the COVID-19 pandemic has dried up the nonprofit’s revenue.

“Town Square relies on community donations to operate and fills in the rest of the budget with income from events like bingo,” he said. “This year, with important sources of income like bingo and all of our programming canceled or scaled back dramatically, the budget shrunk dramatically. But the bills still needed to be paid, so I’m back to mowing the lawn.”

In addition, Burkart has been collecting items to auction off to help raise funds for Town Square and he plans to host Harvest Fest Bingo outside on

Mill Pond Terrace.

Before the non-profit purchased the building, it served as the Green Lake County Courthouse for more than 100 years.

After the county moved out in 2011, community members crafted a plan to transform the property into a community center that would offer arts, culture

and fitness services.

“The original concept was ‘The Center of Arts and Innovation.’ That’s what we called it before Town Square, and we’ve kind of stayed with that original concept,” Burkart said. “We’ve done a lot with economic innovation, we do a lot with the arts — whether it’s culinary arts or performance arts.”

The group approached the county with a proposal, and after months of deliberation, the county decided that Town Square’s proposal was the most likely to succeed while benefiting the community.

In April 2012, the county agreed to sell the vacant facility to the non-profit for $1 and a month later, the Green Lake county clerk gave the group the keys to the building.

Over the next three months, a slew of volunteers tore out old carpeting, removed old furniture, pried off plywood walls, as well as painted, scrubbed and polished the entire building.

“There’s a little blood, sweat and tears still in the building from the volunteer groups,” Burkart said. “We had painting

When the community center opened Aug. 11, 2012, it housed a yoga and pilates studio, a lobby art gallery, the Lester Schwartz Gallery, a commercial kitchen and the Green Lake Association offices.

Over the years, Town Square has continued to add new programs and partner with new community organizations to provide services, as it grew to include multiple retailers and a fitness center inside and a farmers market outside on Fridays.

Prior to the merger, the Downtown Green Lake Renewal Project worked on beautification projects to make Green Lake more attractive and accessible.

Burkart believes the merger allowed both organizations to utilize their talents in revitalizing the community.

One of the biggest accomplishments was executing the construction of Mill Pond Terrace, which created an outdoor event space overlooking the Dartford Mill Pond with the

help of more than 400 donors.

“That was a huge undertaking,” Burkart said. “There were hundreds of hundreds of donations, I think there’s over 200 names on the donor wall.”

B u r k a r t b e l i eve s Tow n Square’s continued evolution is a testament to “the power of community.”

“It’s like more people have become part of the family,” he said. “The community center has really formed a community of people working together to make Green Lake better.”

In terms of the future of Town Square, Burkart says it took a page out of Disney’s playbook,

believing the community center to be “something that’s never going to be complete.”

He noted the community center is readying the facility for the addition of the new Green Lake Boys & Girls Club location opening this fall.

Overall, Burkart is excited and optimistic about the future of the community center.

“The building was built in 1899, so it was a little over 100 years old when we started,” he said. “We want this beautiful historic building to serve the community for the next 100 years.”

Each fall, during Ripon’s Septemberfest celebration, pet owners dress up their dogs to enjoy a pet parade up and down Watson Street.

The annual tradition, which is hosted by the Green Lake Area Animal Shelter (GLAAS), has become one of the organization’s most successful fund-raisers.

Last year’s event brought in about $18,000.

Participants are asked to collect donations for the shelter, known as “pledges,” and the top-pledge earners are awarded prizes. The event also features other awards for the smallest dog, largest dog, best dog trick, best kisser, best tail wagger and best costume.

This year, however, there will be no dog walk through downtown Ripon because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“We as an organization felt that the risks of hosting the event were too great this year because it is our biggest event of the year,” Shelter Manager Janine Rubeck said of the decision to cancel.

“We love putting it on and people love coming to it, but the risks of putting it on outweigh the benefits. If one person gets sick at the dog walk, it wouldn’t be worth it.”

Instead, GLAAS is hosting the virtual “No Walk Dog Walk” Saturday, Sept. 19 via Facebook Live.

Leading up to the day of the event, the shelter will collect photos and videos from pet owners that it will compile and present in a video presentation.

GLAAS also is asking participants to collect donation pledges.

Fund-raising materials and registration forms must be turned in by Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. to be eligible for prizes. Submissions can be emailed to adopt@glaas.org, or sent to the shelter via Facebook Messenger.

The video presentation will announce pledge winners and awards for contest participants, selected from the photo and video submissions.

“It’s an experiment because we’ve never done anything like this, so I’m trying to tweak things as we go along,” Rubeck said.

“It’ll be a fun little adventure.”

She felt that hosting the event on Facebook would make it accessible to most people. Those who do not have access to the social media platform or the internet are encouraged to call the shelter to participate.

“If somebody is not on Facebook and they don’t want to get on Facebook, get in touch with me and we’ll figure out how they can still participate,” Rubeck said.

In a year without a pandemic, she noted OnEdge Photography sets up a booth where it offers pet photos during the Septemberfest event.

This year, OnEdge will be offering “drive-through” photography services in its parking lot, where pet owners can get photos of their four-legged family members the same day as the No Walk Dog Walk.

“We wanted to somehow make sure that they were still incorporated into the event and that people still had the opportunity to get their dog’s picture taken that day,” Rubeck said. “I know one woman that comes by the booth every year like clockwork.”

“I think people were home and thought, ‘I’m home and I’m lonely, I’ll get a cat. Or ‘I’ve been thinking about adding another dog and I’m home for three weeks so I can train it; let’s get a dog,’” Rubeck said. “We did the same processing of adoptions and screening of adopters that we always did, so I don’t think we did any adoptions that were impulse buys, where we’re going to get the animals back in six months.”

In addition to adoptions and other pet-related services, Rubeck noted the shelter tries to be a resource for pet owners who may have questions.

“If you have a pet-related question, call us,” she said. “If we can’t just solve the question for you, we’ll direct you to someone who can.”

While the shelter hasn’t been impacted as severely as other organizations by the coronavirus pandemic, Rubeck added that donations are essential in allowing the shelter to provide pet-related services.

While the GLAAS is doing everything it can to maintain the dog walk tradition virtually, Rubeck noted that in terms of services the shelter wasn’t severely impacted by the pandemic.

In March, the shelter was deemed to be an “essential service,” meaning it was allowed to remain open during the Safer at Home order.

“Here at the shelter, we’ve always tried to do things by appointment, whether it be adoptions by appointment, animal intake by appointment [or] nail trims by appointment,” Rubeck said. “It really didn’t change that much in how we offer our services.”

Inside the shelter, masks are mandatory to prevent COVID-19 from spreading inside the facility.

‘Fridays on the Farm’ debuts in place of Land & Lake Family Field Day For the past three years, the Green Lake Association (GLA) and the Green Lake County Farm Bureau have co-sponsored a field day event aimed at bringing the community together to learn about conservation- and agricultural-management practices that conserve both the land and water resources.

These practices are not only aimed at strengthing a farmer’s bottom line, but they also protect soil health and keep nutrients out of the lake. This free, local event is open to the public and unites farmers and non-farmers alike in the GLA’s mission of improving the water quality of Big Green Lake for future generations.

This year’s event was originally scheduled for Aug. 15 at Avalon Creek Farm, but — like many events this year — the GLA and its partners decided to cancel the event in order to prioritize the health and safety of the community.

While the field day planning committee cannot bring the community together as it had hoped, it still is planning to showcase local farmers and their conservation practices by hosting a video series called “Fridays on the Farm.”

“Even though we can’t be together this year for the field day, it’s our hope that these videos will help educate the community on the incredible work farmers in our area are doing,” said Jennifer Fjelsted, project and communication manager at the GLA. “We were thrilled to have over 100 attendees at last year’s Lake & Family Field Day at Dukelow Farm and we hope to build on that excitement through this video series.”

Over the past two months, ClearView Productions has been visiting local farms — capturing footage and interviews with some of Green Lake watershed’s agricultural neighbors.

Freeland will screen ‘Motherload’ Saturday, Sept. 5 at Mill Pond Terrace What if bikes could save the world? The notion is old as the bicycle itself, but it gets a new spin in the documentary “Motherload.”

Freeland Film Festival will screen the documentary Saturday, Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. at Mill Pond Terrace. The Labor Day weekend screening will mark its third “outdoor movie night.”

This event that will help support the Freeland Virtual Film Festival, which is set for Friday, Sept. 11 to Tuesday, Sept. 15.

It is being sponsored by Dan Hutter at Moboevo Bikes. Mobo-

evo is located on the first floor at Town Square community center.

“Motherload” is a documentary in which the cargo bicycle becomes a vehicle for exploring motherhood in this digital age of climate change. “I play the banjo and I really like playing music with friends. It’s rewarding to create [music] with friends. We play at the farm and we’ve played at The Heist in Ripon. Each summer we host the Avrom Farm Party, but we had to cancel this summer because of COVID. We’re planning it for next summer.”

According to Norton, lake trout fishing has remained steady on Big Green Lake as the fish can be found about 50- to 70-feet down and on the bottom of the lake.

He’s had success catching lake trout when trolling over the deep water using a Sutton spoon rig.

“Lake trout fishing is good,” he said. “We had a guy from Mongolia get a 15-pounder.”

According to Schulz, the panfish bite has picked up on Little Green Lake in recent weeks, specifically bluegill and crappies.

The best place to catch panfish is out in the middle of the lake.

Schulz recommends using minnows as bait.

“They’re getting some pretty nice size crappies out there now,” he said.

The walleye bite has remained slow in recent weeks.

“They’re still getting a few, but it’s a little slow,” Schulz said.

At the same time, he noted bass fishing has been “OK.” Schulz says anglers have had success using plastic worms under the piers.

Musky have remained a consistent bite, as they’ve been spotted under the piers in shallow water.

Northern pike have been one of the better bites on Big Green Lake, while the lake trout bite has slowed a little bit, according to Walker.

He noted northern pike have been biting on live chubs and suckers in 20- to 40-foot water and along the weed edges.

Meanwhile, Walker described the lake trout bite as “a little bit slow,” noting some can be found suspended in the deep water, down around 50 to 60 feet.

“They’ve moved out of that pattern a little bit,” he said. “There’s still some fish there, [but] it’s a little bit tougher to catch them right now.”

Walker added the best time to catch lake trout is typically early in the morning “and then on and off” the rest of the day.

Additionally, smallmouth bass can be caught over the rocks in about 8- to 20-foot water, using leeches or hellgrammites as bait.

Bluegill action also has picked up near the old fish cribs by Sandstone Avenue and along the weed edge. Walker noted the bluegill being caught right now are “still pretty small.” He recommends using a slip bobber with worms and nightcrawlers as bait.

The white bass and walleye bite have both been slow, but Walker expects walleye fishing to pick up in the coming weeks as the water cools down.

Blue-Green Algae Bloom found in Big Green’s County Highway K Marsh Water samples collected by the Green Lake Sanitary District Aug. 7 showed high densities of bluegreen algae, also known as cyanobacteria, in the County Highway K Marsh located at the southwest inlet of Green Lake.

FJELSTED photosynthetic bacteria that are capable of producing toxins that can be harmful to humans and pets.

These algae are naturally found in lakes, but become an issue when they grow to noticeable levels, called “blooms.”

Large blue-green algae blooms on Green Lake are rare, and there is currently no evidence that the Aug. 7 bloom, that began in the County Highway K Marsh, is growing in the main part of the lake.

According Dr. Paul Bukaveckas, a cyanobacteria expert at Virginia Commonwealth University, cyanobacteria blooms can last days, weeks or months, often depending on weather conditions. These bloom-causing bacteria tend to prefer hotter weather and nutrientrich environments. As the season heads towards fall, cooling water temperatures eventually bring about an end to a bloom.

Cyanobacteria are one of the few algae that can regulate their own buoyancy. Floating to the surface of the water allows them to absorb more sunlight, which can lead to more growth.

However, since cyanobacteria are at the surface, these free floating algae are more susceptible to being pushed around by the wind, often causing them to form mats of surface scum along shorelines. When monitoring a body of water with an active bloom, the predominant wind direction can help predict other areas with higher exposure risk.

Likewise, a large rain event can push a bloom out of a marsh and into the main lake. Once there, a bloom could continue to grow, but with less favorable conditions like colder, deeper water, there’s a strong possibility it would become diluted and die off.

The toxins that cyanobacteria can produce can be harmful to humans and even fatal to pets. It’s best practice to look at the water before entering. If it’s green or cloudy, don’t go in.

Always choose the clearest water possible to swim in. Remind children not to swallow water while swimming, and bring along fresh, clean water for pets to drink. If feeling ill or demonstrating signs of illness after swimming in any body of water, seeking medical or veterinary help is recommended.

“Once the bloom ends, the toxins go away pretty quickly,” said Buckaveckas. “These toxins are not long-lived compounds.

When talking about human health risks from exposure, the biggest concern is mainly during active bloom events.”

According to Buckaveckas, anglers fishing in the County Highway K Marsh do not need to be too concerned about consuming fish caught in the area of the bloom.

While the toxins produced by the cyanobacteria can accumulate in fish tissues, in a smaller bloom, such as the one seen in the marsh, the potential levels in fish would be unlikely to reach levels that would pose a human health risk from consumption.

And just as toxin levels do not persist in water after the end of a bloom, they do not persist in fish tissue either. According to Buckaveckas, within weeks to one month, toxins in the fish would be quite low, if present at all.

The Green Lake Sanitary District and Green Lake County Department of Health & Human Services will continue to monitor the situation. While it can be difficult to tell the difference between a harmful cyanobacteria bloom and harmless aquatic plants like duckweed or filamentous algae in the lake, the best rule of thumb is when in doubt, stay out.
