The Green Laker

New Reporter ready to take in Green Lake Prior to landing the job as the reporter for The Green Laker, I had little knowledge of the Green Lake area. I had driven past the town probably half a dozen times, but I was unaware of the vibrant community of scenic lakeside views, summertime fun and kind people. From my immediate start reporting for The Green Laker, I quickly became aware of the reason this small, tucked away town is beloved by the people in and around it. On my first day driving through town, getting acquainted with the area, I was greeted by bursting cherry blossoms and warm spring air that provided a beautiful and welcoming introduction to Green Lake. Then, I met some of the great people that keep this town running. Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Meier and Town Square Executive Director Fran Hill informed me of all the incredible things to do in the area, and Dartford Historical Society President Larry Behlen told me about the rich history of Green Lake. From my short time here, I can already sense the camaraderie and excitement of summer. A little bit about myself: for the past two years, I’ve been studying journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh where I’ve been learning the ins and outs of the journalism business. Come June, I will graduate with my bachelor’s degree and The Green Laker will be my first reporting gig as a college graduate. As my time in college quickly comes to an end and I’m forced to join the “real world,” I’m

Sophia Voight grateful for all the new opportunities that are arising from it. Four years ago, when I started college and had no clue what I wanted to pursue careerwise, journalism wasn’t even a crossing thought. I had never met anyone in the business or knew much about the career field. It wasn’t until my last semester at community college where I decided I wanted to turn my love of writing into a career and chose journalism on a whim. UW-Oshkosh was close to my family and it had a great student newspaper, so it seemed like a nice place to give this whole journalism thing a go. While at Oshkosh, I reached out to their student newspaper, The Advance-Titan, and began reporting for news. From there, I immediately fell in love with reporting. I loved learning about my community and telling the stories about the people in it. While at The Advance-Titan, I also met Joe Schulz, The Green Laker’s previous reporter. Joe’s incredible leadership in the newsroom and passion for local journalism pushed me to be a better reporter and reaf-

Freeland to raise awareness through multiple events “We want to show stories of hope and recovery because everyone has COVID-19 fatigue.”

BY SOPHIA VOIGHT

Three summers ago, cars lined the street and people flooded Green Lake as they walked between the historic Thrasher Opera House, the Town Square Community Center, Caestecker Library and the American Legion Hall to witness the Freeland Film Festival’s plethora of films and panels highlighting wildlife and human trafficking. Last year, the COVID-19 pandemic caused Freeland to pivot and push its films and panels online, resulting in festival-goers watching from their homes. But this year as COVID19 restrictions ease up and some events return to inperson, Freeland has decided to attempt to do a hybrid approach. Freeland will host both inperson and virtual events to highlightits ongoing mission of promoting awareness of wildlife trafficking and human slavery. “This year’s Freeland Film Festival is going to look different,” Executive Producer Rich Christian said. “We are in the process of defining what that look will be.” This year’s theme is “A Better World: Beyond Pandemics” and seeks stories that explain the drivers and impacts of pandemics and how people can mitigate their recurrence by addressing their

Evelyn Galster, event coordinator root cause. Freeland’s founder Steve Galster has joined hands with the End Pandemics Earth alliance, along with 70 other global organizations, with a goal to protect nature and prevent future pandemics. Event Coordinator Evelyn Galster explained how COVID19 is a zoonotic disease, meaning it started in animals and was transmitted to humans. Zoonotic diseases are often caused by animal trafficking, similar to how many health experts suggest the coronavirus originated in a bat sold in a wet market in Wuhan, China. Galster said Freeland joined this alliance to help reduce the risk of future pandemics by raising awareness of how wildlife trade causes these types of zoonotic diseases. “Instead of everybody focusing on getting a vaccine — which is great — [pandemics] are not going to end,” she said. “What if another virus comes from another zoonotic disease?” Freeland is hoping to show people the global impact the

Freeland plans to host multiple outdoor movies this year. Last year, it showed “Field of Dreams” to much acclaim from the community. pandemic is having on people and the environment this year. Galster said it’s important to have conversations about reducing wildlife trade, climate change, and protecting the environment to prevent COVID-19 and other novel disease outbreaks. “It all goes back to just regenerating nature as it’s intended to be so that we can have a clean, healthy world,” she said. Instead of a weekend film festival, Freeland will host a series of outdoor movies and virtual events to continue educating people on ecological issues and provide entertainment to people in Green Lake. Freeland will use the newly renovated Town Square Ballroom as the primary venue space for two days of films and panels Saturday, Sept. 11 and Sunday, Sept. 12. In addition to its main event in September, Freeland will host a series of outdoor movie showings Saturday, July 17 and Tuesday, Aug. 10 to fundraise for its September events

and get people excited about Freeland. Freeland hosted its first outdoor movie of the summer Saturday, May 22 with the showing of “Breaking Away” at Town Square Mill Pond Terrace. The bike-in movie was a part of a collaboration with Green Lake Greenways bike club and the 2021 Bikefest. “By having these three events, we’re trying to give [people] a little preview and get them excited again because we’ve been pretty quiet during the pandemic,” Galster said. Freeland also will collaborate with Green Lake Greenways for a second joint fundraiser at Vines & Rushes Tuesday, Aug. 10 in Ripon with a showing of “Sideways.” It also will have an outdoor screening of “The Great Outdoors” Saturday, July 17 at the baseball field in Green Lake. Last year the film “Field of Dreams” was a success, so Freeland decided to start a tradition of an outdoor movie at the ballpark

“These are intended to be fun, family events that we can do outdoors safely,” Galster said. “Who doesn’t love an outdoor movie night? “Compared to years ago, where they had drive-ins, we stopped really doing a lot of outdoor movies and then they made a really big comeback last year.” While wanting to comply with COVID-19 safety guidelines and keep their moviegoers safe, Galster said Freeland wanted to take advantage of this new popularity of outdoor movies for this year’s events. The goal of Freeland’s September event is to present how people can protect nature and end pandemics by changing the way they interact with animals around the world. “We want to show stories of hope and recovery because everyone has COVID-19 fatigue,” Galster said. “We want to put all that to the side and focus on positive outcomes and learn how to make a better world.”

TRAVEL

4 ways you can explore

GREEN LAKE

BY SOPHIA VOIGHT

Nestled within beautiful shorelines and quaint downtown shops, Green Lake is a bustling community of avid fishers, cyclists, golfers and artisans. Known for its summer fun, the Green Lake area offers something for everyone to enjoy, whether spending days unwinding by the lake, dancing to the endless live music offered in town, biking the area or swinging the 9-iron. Fun on the Lake Green Lake’s clear waters and more than 20 miles of shoreline offer visitors plenty of water activities such as sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, water skiing and fishing. Those wishing to spend the day out on the lake, numerous local businesses offer boat rentals and the lake has several launches, including ones out of Hattie Sherwood Park, Canal Street, Deacon Mills Park, Sunset Park and Beyers Cove. As the deepest natural inland lake in Wisconsin, Big Green Lake is an angler’s paradise. Start the day off by grabbing some fresh bait and updating your tackle box downtown then set off on the lake or relax and cast out the pole at Playground or Sunset Park.

Live Music Green Lake also has many opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy live music. The Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce hosts Concerts in the Park every Wednesday evening throughout the summers. From June 9 to Aug. 11, folks can grab their lawn chairs or blankets and head over to Deacon Mills Park to listen to free live music by the lake. Musical talent ranges from blues to rock to country, so there is bound to be a concert

for every music lover. The historic Thrasher Opera House, located in the heart of downtown Green Lake, is home to numerous musical events year-round. Additionally, the Green Lake Festival of Music also works to bring live music to the Green Lake area.

Biking Green Lake has a rich history of cycling and is home to numerous biking events and miles of paved trails for both casual and expert cyclists alike. Cyclists can loop more than 20 miles around the lake to get a scenic tour of Green Lake or opt for an easier and shorter route on Lauree’s Trail, which is partially finished and aims to connect Ripon and Green Lake for cyclists along Highway 23. The Green Lake 100 is an annual bike ride through Green Lake’s vibrant community and scenic natural surroundings. Bikers of all levels will be able to enjoy the fourth-annual ride Saturday, June 5. Depending on their skill level, cyclists can choose between The Minnow, The Perch, The Lake Trout or The Muskellunge routes. The Minnow enables riders to loop Green Lake. The Perch takes cyclists to Princeton and back. The Lake Trout takes riders through Princeton to Lunch Creek Winery near Neshkoro

Green Lake offers something from everyone. When out of the water, folks can enjoy golfing, biking or shopping in the city’s quaint downtown. and back. The Muskellunge clocks in at 100 miles and goes through Wautoma and circles back through Spring Lake.

Golfing Golf enthusiasts young and old are guaranteed to have a great time in Green Lake with four area courses. Voted one of Wisconsin’s

best golf courses by Golf Week, the Golf Courses of Lawsonia is located just off the Green Lake Conference Center and provides 36 holes surrounded by beautiful scenery. century-old oak trees to provide a stunning experience for the novice or seasoned golfers. Lastly, Sondalle’s White Lake Golf Resort outside of Princeton offers a challenging 18-hole course along a scenic rolling landscape. Green Lake bowling alley finds new life as The 300 Club BY JOE SCHULZ

jschulz@riponpress.com An expansion of the old Green Lake Lanes and Pizza bowling alley at W1802 County Road A broke ground back in March. The project is part of a $1 million renovation and expansion of the old bowling alley. The bowling alley will open in June and the addition is expected to be complete in July. Ripon native Justin Krueger purchased the property back in December with plans to revamp the bowling alley and create an addition to the building containing an arcade. “This is really for the community,” he said. Krueger, CEO of the Arizona-based MFRG-ICON Construction, said the renovation will feature new state-ofthe-art bowling pinspotters, synthetic lanes, an electronic scoring system and new furniture. The project will include a large, 2,500 square foot addition that will be used as an arcade and also will include a handicap bathroom, birthday party room and a conference room. In addition, Krueger said the business will feature a new kitchen and a new menu. Krueger is working with architect Bill Hoch of BlowFisH Architects to design the revamped bowling alley and

arcade. The revitalized property has been dubbed, “The 300 Club.” “I think it’s going to be good for the community,” Krueger said. “I think it’s something that’s unique; there’s going to be a legit arcade right there in Green Lake with state-of-theart bowling equipment.” In fact, Krueger said The 300 Club will be the only bowling alley in Wisconsin using the specific type of pinspotters being installed. He noted the pinspotters are attached to the bowling pins on strings. Krueger explained that the pins will collapse like any other bowling alley, but the pinspotters will pull them up with string, straighten them out and then set them down. “It’s a kind of a big deal in the bowling world,” he said. “I didn’t know that when we committed to it, but people are going to be coming just to check out the equipment, apparently.” In terms of the timeline for the project, Krueger noted installation for much of the equipment began in April, while a lot of the cosmetic changes, such as new flooring, ceiling tiles, lighting and painting are underway. A new sign was installed in April. “The meat and potatoes” of the renovation took place in April, he noted. “We’re redoing the whole exterior,” Krueger said. “It’ll be a totally different look of

THINGS TO DO

‘The state of Wisconsin believes in Green Lake’ Heidel House will reopen this summer The city of Green Lake is receiving a $250,000 state grant to help renovate and reopen the Heidel House Hotel and Resort located in Green Lake. The Community Development Investment (CDI) Grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) will support substantial redevelopment of the interior buildings to reopen the hotel and resort, which has been closed since May 2019. “A vibrant downtown is crucial to a city’s overall economic health and its quality of life, which is why one of WEDC’s top priorities is to support communities throughout the state as they invest in improving their business districts,” said Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of WEDC. “This project will not only bring new jobs to the city but will also bring more

done include the hotel public and common spaces, restaurants and guest rooms. The hotel will have two bars and two restaurants, an indoor pool, fitness center, game room, gift shop, business center and conference facilities. The Heidel House is set to open its nautical-themed rooms and renovated bars and restaurants Friday, May 28, just in time for the bustling Green Lake summer. “We are having a room rate special of $150 per night, dinner and drink specials, too,” Heidel House General Manager Nicole Sevick said. A grand opening celebration is slated for later this summer, according to Heidel House investor Mike White. He says roughly 60 rooms will be open in May, along with both restaurants and the lobby bar. “There’s such an excitement,” White said of the project. “There’s a buzz in the air around Green Lake. And this is all fueling that fire.” Guest rooms will have new bathrooms, flooring, window treatments and furniture. Restaurants will include added space, a new lobby, a bar and new flooring.

The hotel will be franchised as the Heidel House Hotel and Conference Center under the Ascend Hotel Collection by Choice Hotels International, and the new resort will employ an estimated 48 people. Heidel House was originally built in 1890 as a private estate, and in 1950 it became Heidel House Resort, serving locals and tourists in Green Lake for over 70 years. The hotel offers a total of

115 rooms with outdoor amenities including a pool, recreation areas, docks and direct access to Green Lake. State Sen. Joan Ballweg, R-Markesan, congratulated Heidel House investors, the Green Lake Common council, local officials and Mayor Ray Radis for their work to revive the historic property. “The Heidel House Hotel and Resort has always been a magnet for the Green Lake community,” Ballweg said. Similarly, state Rep. Alex Dallman, R-Green Lake, said he was proud to learn that Green Lake had been awarded the WEDC grant to assist in restoring the Heidel House. “The size of this grant is a testament to the financial impact that the Heidel House Hotel and Resort has on our local economy and surrounding communities,” Dallman said. “This major investment is proof that the state of Wisconsin believes in Green Lake, our tourism industry and our local leadership.”

PRESERVING THE LAKE

Dumping leaves in lake? That may be a citation Experts warn that leaves have negative impact on water quality As the weather gets warmer and spring yard cleanup begins, the Green Lake Association (GLA) wants to remind everyone to be responsible with their leaf litter to prevent polluting Green Lake. After receiving multiple complaints from shoreline homeowners, the GLA confirmed with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) that dumping or blowing leaves directly into the lake is considered littering and could be a citable offense. Leaves, grass clippings, compost and general yard debris contain phosphorus — the nutrient responsible for Green Lake’s water quality issues. When leaf litter or yard waste is dumped into the lake, into streams or into ravines that flush to the lake, it directly adds excess nutrients to the water and harms Green Lake’s water quality. Phosphorus pollution from leaf litter can contribute to water quality problems such as low dissolved oxygen for aquatic life, harmful algae blooms and excessive aquatic plant growth. Once leaves are blown or raked in the lake, they do not stay put. Often, waves and wind push them up onto a neighbor’s shore where they decompose into an unsightly sludge. The community can help

GOOD

Jennifer Fjelsted protect Green Lake’s water quality, and be a considerate neighbor, by never dumping or blowing leaves or lawn clippings into the lake. It’s also important not to dump or blow leaves into streams or ravines that flush runoff to the lake during rainstorms. For homeowners who use a lawn or landscaping service, confirming that the company used does not blow leaves from the property into the lake is an important step toward protecting the health of Green Lake. Looking for a way to help lawns while helping the lake? Consider mulching leaves in place on the lawn to help nutrients stay on the land and out of the water. Composting leaves is another option for leaf management that can then be used to responsibly fertilize lawns or gardens.

Dumping leaves in the lake is considered littering and can be a citable offense. Leaves also hurt water quality and should never be disposed of in Green Lake. By working together to keep leaves out of the lake, everyone can play a role in protecting Big Green. If anyone is concerned about egregious or excessive leaf dumping occurring, call Brad Latza, Green Lake County WDNR conservation warden, at 920-807-4096. Since leaves quickly dissipate, pictures and/or videos of the potential citable offense may be helpful. Jennifer Fjelsted is the communication and project manager for the Green Lake Association, a local not-for-profit that works to improve water quality for Green Lake.

This shoreline resident was left with the unsightly result of a neighbor blowing leaves into the lake. Not only can leaf litter decompose into a sludge on shore, but it contributes to phosphorus loading that harms lake water quality.

Retired journalist’s book details Princeton’s early years A retired journalist from Princeton has channeled his passion for community newspapers into a 245,000-word book tracing the early history of his hometown. “That’s pretty windy for an old editor,” author Roger Bartel laughed. “Of course, so is the title.” Bartel spent nearly three years researching, writing, and producing “Bartel’s History of Princeton, Volume I: From the New World to the New Deal.” Much of the time was spent scanning about 7,000 pages of the Princeton Republic, a weekly newspaper that chronicled community happenings from 1867 to 1937. Jerry Apps and Dennis McCann, two of Wisconsin’s better-known authors and historians, provided testimonials for the book, which traces Princeton’s history from the time it was land occupied by American Indians to the eve of World War II. “[Bartel] has done a masterful job of digging out the early history of Princeton,” Apps Mary Catanese photo

said. Likewise, McCann said the “exhaustively researched hometown history … should serve as the definitive story of Princeton for years to come.” Princeton was founded in 1848 by Royal Treat and attracted waves of German and Polish immigrants in the late 19th century. Its early merchants relied on steamboats and then the Sheboygan & Fond du Lac Railroad to ship crops and livestock. Bartel refers to the era as “Old Princeton.” Bartel, who retired in 2017 after a 43-year career in journalism, said the research that most surprised him was how deeply diphtheria gutted the community in the 1880s. “One report said more than 200 children died,” Bartel said. “Undertakers worked around the clock to keep pace with the demand for coffins.” Other chapters in the 536page book cover topics such as Princeton’s brief stint as the county seat, prohibition and the local brewery, the Princeton witch trial, the murder of a young boy, letters from the trenches of the Great War, arrival and extension of the railroad, development of the city park and auditorium, local political battles over issues

such as new schools, electric lights and kindergarten and more. “It is a chronological history, mostly by decade, taken from the frontpages of the Republic and includes triumphs and celebrations as well as tragedies and scandals,” Bartel said. “Excerpts from the newspaper comprise the heart and soul of the book.” Other sources include area and state newspapers, area and state histories, memoirs and journals, court and government documents, historic maps and various sites online. in 2019 after city and historical society officials showed no interest in correcting errors he identified in several plaques on the “historic walking tour” in Princeton’s downtown district, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. “I was frustrated,” Bartel said. “The blog provided an outlet to vent and to correct those errors and highlight the real history of some of our most historic buildings. It has grown to include additional local research. I was amazed it received almost 14,000 pageviews in its first 12 months.” Bartel said the mistakes repeated most often about early Princeton are that the village was not incorporated until 1867, there was no bridge across the Fox River until then, and the museum building at 630 West Water Street was moved over two miles from St. Marie to Princeton by teams of oxen and horses. Articles from newspapers and government documents, however, show there was a bridge across the Fox by 1852; the Legislature issued Princeton’s original charter in 1865 but had to repeal and replace it in 1867 after a judge ruled the village marshal did not have authority to serve a court order on the village president; and

the building at 630 Water was built in 1876 by Gardner Green as part of his lumberyard and “farmer’s bazaar.” The book’s appendix includes a wealth of information, including a time line of Old Princeton, a map of the historic Water Street blocks, a table showing construction dates and original occupants of downtown buildings, and corrections to errors in previous history projects. “We have also over the years misplaced a large hotel, relocated a foundry and misnamed an early theater, among other things,” Bartel said. Bartel attended St. John’s Catholic grade school in Princeton, completed high school at Holy Name Seminary in Madison, and earned degrees in journalism and history from the University of Wisconsin. He was editor of newspapers and magazines in Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, and Florida over his career and owned an alternative weekly newspaper in La Crosse. He traces his interest in both newspapers and history to his parents, Josephine (“Joey”) and Harold Bartel, who were involved in church and community organizations and lived in the Princeton area their entire lives. His mother was treasurer of the Princeton Historical Society for several years. Bartel’s book will be available at Short Street Market, 427 West Water Street, and Daiseye, 525 West Water Street, no later than Friday, Dec. 18. It will also be available through the daiseye.com website (keyword search: Princeton). “I’m pleased the book will be available at two historic downtown buildings,” Bartel said. “The Daiseye building was built in 1875 and housed Princeton’s first hometown bank. The Short Street Market building went up in 1889 and housed a dentist office for over 50 years as well as the Princeton Republic and the local library for a time.” Bartel said he wants to write one more book because there are stories from the 1940s and later that he is eager to learn more about but does not plan on researching “Volume II: From Bombers to Boomers” until 2022. “I really want to spend some time developing the blog with additional research material and would like to first create a chronology for as many of the historic downtown buildings as possible,” he said.

HISTORY UNCOVERED

Laker Country has been a cyclists dream for decades BY SOPHIA VOIGHT

Green Lake will soon see groups of cyclists rush through town and glide along scenic waterfront bike routes during its fourth-annual Green Lake 100 bike ride. While the event is a fairly recent addition to the area’s summer calendar, congested streets of bikers are nothing new in Green Lake. Home to rolling hills and flat plains favorable to cyclists, Green Lake was once a prominent part of the world championship cycling series. Back in the 1980s, Green Lake hosted a section of the Wisconsin Grand Prix of Cycling, formally referred to as the “Wisconsin Milk Race.” This top bicycle race in the Midwest brought thousands of the best racers in the country, as well as international racers from all over Europe right through town. Participants in the race that passed through Green Lake have included threetime Tour de France winner Greg LeMond and three-time track cycling world champion

Sheila Young-Ochowicz. European teams from England, Poland, Norway and Germany have ridden alongside world-class Olympian athletes in the Wisconsin Grand Prix. The Grand Prix featured races like the Penn Mutual Veteran’s National Cup for cyclists 35 and older, which brought the best veteran riders in the country to the area for the climactic final of the National Stage Competition. The Women’s World Team Trials, which determine what women riders will be placed on the U.S. Women’s World Team, also were featured at these races. Residents of the area were also given the opportunity to compete alongside the Olympian athletes that passed through the area. The 1982 Grand Prix included a citizen achievement race from Ripon to Green Lake for cyclists of all ages to ride with the professionals. Sections of the Wisconsin Grand Prix passed through Madison, Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Ripon and all the way

The Green Lake section of the race was promoted by the Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Green Lake Rotary Club and featured live music downtown and an art show, similar to festivities planned for after the Green Lake 100. Depending on their skill level, cyclists interested in participating in the Green Lake 100 may choose between The Minnow, The Perch, The Lake Trout or The Muskellunge routes. The Minnow enables riders to loop Green Lake. The Perch takes cyclists to Princeton and back. The Lake Trout brings riders through Princ-

is scheduled to be back after many missed it last year. “Everybody missed it so much; everybody was so sad to not see this event take place,” Ninneman said. “If you talk to any of the Green Lake County [University of Wisconsin-] Extension fair committee members, ‘cancellation’ is not in their vocabulary this year. It’s something we take pride in and I think everybody is ready and wants to get back to the county fair.”

the fair committee has been meeting virtually with the Wisconsin Association of Fairs, which is providing guidance to all of the county fairs in the state. “That’s been a very nice help for all of the counties in the state because we were all in the same predicament,” she said. “It’s nice time where you can hear from other counties that did hold a modified fair.” The Green Lake County Fair

“Food vendors are going to have to do whatever they can to keep safe and keep everything clean,” she said. “We’ll have plenty of hand-washing stations and plenty of hand sanitizer.” A truck and tractor pull also is in the works, but is not yet set in stone. Beyond the fair itself, Ninneman says the horse show is slated for Saturday, July 31. In terms of the planning process, Ninneman noted

After being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic last year, the Green Lake County Fair is slated to return Aug. 5-8. “Come and eat the fair food, see the exhibits everyone has crafted, ride the rides, check out the animal barns, play Bingo and more,” a Facebook description of the event reads. The fair is being promoted as “A safe event for the whole family.” While the event is still in the early planning stages, Fair Coordinator Kathy Ninneman said several factors such as the event’s theme, the carnival and animal shows already have been determined. This year’s theme is “How the West Was Fun” as it will be a wild west affair. “Dust off your favorite cowboy boots and put on your favorite hat to come on down to the Green Lake County Fair,” Ninneman said. Aside from the theme, Ninneman said the judges for animal shows are booked. Additionally, she says there will be pre-fair judging for all non-animal exhibits, which will take place Tuesday, Aug. 3. “It’s not a public event or anything, when the fair is not going on. It’s just for all the people that have entered junior exhibits,” Ninneman said. “That’s something

Everyone has been super supportive in shopping local and very, very helpful.”

Although the business has been impacted by the COVID19 pandemic, Nitz is hoping to keep it a Green Lake mainstay and hopefully pass it on to the next generation someday. “As long as I can keep it running, we’ll keep it going,” she said. “And maybe my kids will take over after that.”

ter and toward sponsoring an award for animal showing at the Green Lake County Fair. Nitz chose to donate to local charities and events because she felt that it was what her mother would have wanted. “She would really like [the money] to go back to the community,” Nitz said. Both Jean and Dennis dedicated their lives to Green Lake by being active members of the community. “My mom and dad both bowled, they golfed and my dad belonged to the Green Lake Lions Club — he helped start the chili cook-off,” Nitz said. “There’s so much that they were involved in. Green Lake had been their entire life.” While Jean and Dennis cared deeply about Green Lake, their business also meant a lot to them. Nitz said they “threw their whole lives into” Adam’s Rib as they tried to treat everyone who came through the door like family. “Everyone here was more like family than they were like employees or customers,” Nitz said. “Over the years, there were people that didn’t have families that lived in town. [Jean] would invite them over for Thanksgiving, or they would come over for Easter and she’d make plates for them. It was just going the extra mile.” A little more than a year ago, Jean was diagnosed with lung cancer. She tried different treatments from immunotherapy to radiation but “nothing seemed to be working,” Nitz said. In February, Jean decided she wanted to be done with treatment and that she wanted to spend the rest of her time at home with family. “She wanted to stay at home, which we made happen,” Nitz said. “She got to be surrounded by her family.” Until the last two weeks of her life, Jean was “doing pretty good,” Nitz said, noting the

THINGS TO DO

Escapade yacht hopes to make a comeback this summer Pier extension awaits DNR approval BY JOE SCHULZ

jschulz@riponpress.com Wes Stibb of Outdoor Impact has purchased the Heidel House Escapade yacht, a 60-foot boat known for offering sightseeing tours around Big Green Lake and special-event cruises. He and Pierless Boat Rentals Owner Thom Lemmenes have partnered to host summer lake tours of Green Lake aboard the Escapade yacht. “I think it helps the community a lot,” Stibb said back in February, noting that he wanted to keep the boat locally owned. “We want people to know that it’s accessible to the community and the surrounding communities.” The duo is currently awaiting approval from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to create a pier extension on Deacon Mills Wharf, according to Green Lake Mayor Ray Radis. A 60-foot by 5-foot pier extension would be constructed by Outdoor Impact at no cost to the city and would be used to allow the Escapade yacht to dock downtown for boat tours. Additionally, Outdoor Impact would gift the new dock to the city and lease it yearly. The Green Lake Common Council voted in April to give preliminary approval to the donation of the pier extension, pending approval of a legal written agreement. Stibb explained that Green Lake had not budgeted to financially contribute to the project and donating the pier extension would speed up the timeline for construction. “If we do it this way, there’s less politics involved and it moves a little bit faster,” he said, noting the intention is to make the addition look “just like the other docks.” Lemmenes said the west side of the dock will be reserved for the Escapade, while the east side would be for public boat docking.

“I think it helps the community a lot.” Wes Stibb, owner of Outdoor Impact Green Lake Police Chief Jason Reysen did not see any issues enforcing the reservation for the Escapade as long as there was a clear marker for boaters identifying that the west side is not for public docking. “If you just put fencing and put a couple gates, where you’re going to have loading and unloading, it’ll end up being fine,” he said. Additionally, Green Lake Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Lisa Meier was supportive of the project, which she described as a potential economic benefit to the city. She estimated the Escapade would bring about 500 guests into Green Lake each week, who would spend between $71 for day trippers and about $150 for overnight visitors.

Wes Stibb of Outdoor Impact recently purchased the Heidel House Escapade yacht and is partnering with Pierless Boat Rentals owner Thom Lemmenes to operate the vessel. Meier calculated the economic benefit to the city for allowing the Escapade to dock downtown for the 17-week tourism season to be approximately $900,000. “The chamber is behind

this, we’re willing to help market it,” she said. “I think it’s a great year to kick this off and get it moving.” Likewise, Stibb said the reason he wants to utilize Deacon Mills Wharf is to benefit the larger Green Lake community. “We can work out of the boathouse, but the only problem is that I wanted something for the community,” he said. “Working out of the boathouse doesn’t help the community because people are going to come to the marina, they’re going to buy food and drinks from me,

The proposed expansion to Deacon Mills Wharf is a 60-foot by five-foot dock that would extend from the wharf out into the lake.

which is great for me, but it doesn’t help with the rest of the community.” The Common Council’s preliminary approval paved the way for Stibb and Lemmenes to begin moving forward with their plans for the Escapade. “Since I heard about this idea, from the very beginning, I thought it was excellent,” Ald. Chris Foos said to Lemmenes and Stibb. “I’m really excited for you guys; I wish you the best and thank you for including the city on this project.”
