Welcome Guide: South Campus

Welcome: Welcome to the South Campus Apartments! We are so happy to have you join our community this year. This guide will tell you more about the apartments, how they are furnished, and what we recommend you bring to make the apartment feel like home. Living on South Campus is the first step of independent living and we hope that you enjoy your time with us.

Move-In Information All apartment students checking in must pickup their keys at the Goldstein Student Center at 401 Skytop Road. Please make sure you have a photo ID when you come to the check-in location as that will allow for the process to go quickly.

South Campus

The South Campus Housing Office/ Office of Residence Life (ORL) The South Campus Housing Office and the Office of Residence Life- South Campus are located in the Goldstein Student Center (GSC). If you have questions about your housing, meal plans, or keys, please visit the SC Housing Office in GSC room 210. The SC Housing Office is located across from South Campus Express convenience store.

If you have questions about roommates, adjusting to college or apartment living, want to find ways to get involved at SU, or have other questions or concerns, visit the SC Office of Residence Life (SC ORL) in the GSC room 206. The entrance to our office is the double doors facing the staircase to the fitness and laundry facilities. The SC ORL staff are ready to assist you. While you are here, check-out our digital media sign, which has important information you might like to know.

The information in this guide will help you get connected and learn more about living on South Campus. Please take a few minutes to get to know your SC ORL staff and the important information of which you should be aware as you move in to your apartment.

Jasen Herrera Residence Director South Campus

Area: Chinook, Lambreth, Small, Winding Ridge Apartments I am originally from Michigan, I have been working at SU for over a year now. I have a passion for running, video games and food, you would most likely find me playing PokĂŠmon Go while running or at a local hole in the wall restaurant. This past year I completed my first 50 mile race and look to become a running coach this fall.

Robert Pugh Residence Director South Campus

Area: Chinook, Lambreth, Small, Winding Ridge Apartment I love action and comic books movies with a healthy dose of comedy in between to keep me on my toes. I’m from Memphis, TN where sunlight and rain are the only problems with the weather. In my free time I am probably working out, winning a game of basketball, doing an outdoor activity, or saving a magical creature in my mind. I look forward to meeting everyone this year.

Steven Shaw Residence Director South Campus

Area: Skyhalls, Slocum Heights, Farm Arc Apartments Born and raised in New Jersey, Steve enjoys filmmaking and videography, which was the discipline of his undergraduate degree.

Steve is also an avid music lover, who enjoys playing multiple instruments and going out to shows. When he's not behind a computer screen or behind a drum set, Steve can probably be found attending collegiate athletic events or participating in intramural sports. Steve lives life by a principle suggested by Minor Threat/Fugazi frontman, Ian MacKaye: "When you see something that scares [you,] go toward it; you're about to learn something.

Aqiyla-Kumar Moody Assistant Residence Director South Campus Area: Skyhalls

This is my second year working on South Campus. I am going into my third year working for the Office of Residence Life. I am an alumna of SU, and I enjoy watching TV and movies. I also like spending time with family, friends, and dancing. Dance is a passion of mine. I danced over 12 years.

Catherine Kellman Assistant Director for South Campus I am originally from the Bronx, I have been part of the ORL Team for five years . I love reality television and game shows. I enjoy spending time with my pug Ramsey and I am a great cook and crafter. I am currently finishing up my MBA here at Syracuse University. I am a big sports fan and enjoy attending games at the Dome. Go Orange!

S.C.O.P.E

As part of their mission, S.C.O.P.E. provides numerous events for South Campus residents throughout the year. In the past, S.C.O.P.E. has brought students on South Campus such events as Glow Dance, Ice Skating, BBQS, and Haunted House. Packages are delivered to front doors Request a “ Signature Required” when getting packages delivered that are bigger than your mailbox, as they will be left outside your front door.

Health/ Safety Inspections Apartment will be inspected at least once during the academic year. The inspection will take approximately ten minutes and it is not necessary for you to be home when the inspection is performed. Two to three University staff members will enter your apartment for the inspection between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. A copy of the completed inspection report will be left for you.

While Health and Safety Inspections are not limited to the following items, the following items are prohibited in or around the South Campus apartments:

a. Candles, incense, lava lamps, multi-headed lamps, and halogen lamps. If these items are found in your apartment during the course of a Health and Safety Inspection, they will be confiscated and disposed of immediately. b. Pools located inside or outside of the apartment c. Tapestries hanging on the ceiling or covering fire safety equipment.

Tampering with fire safety equipment will result in a referral to the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. d. Propane and charcoal grills or similar devices. Propane tanks and grills will be confiscated and not returned. e. Empty alcohol containers in apartments occupied solely by students who are under the legal drinking age of 21. f. Standard household electrical extension cords. Extension cords must be 12 gauge wire with 3rd prong ground. g.Pets-fish only. One ten gallon tank per resident.

No remuneration will be provided to students for property disposed of under the terms of these policies.

Safety: • From 8pm-7am the main gate on Skytop Road is only accessible by ID swipe and is supervised by a Department of Public Safety Officer during that time.

• There is a Department of Public Safety Satellite office in the Goldstein Student Center.

• You do not have to walk from main campus in the dark; as the buses run until 2:50AM • Each resident of South Campus should lock their front and back doors at all times.

• All guests are required to complete the same process done on main campus. http://orl.syr.edu/guest-pass-reg/ • Health and Safety inspections are done twice for each apartment and are unannounced.

Trash/ Recyclables : • Please help keep South Campus looking nice by disposing of your trash and recyclables in the appropriate dumpsters/containers nearest of your apartment building.

• Remember, all recyclable materials should be placed in the large green dumpsters.

• Do not place trash bags, garbage, food, or recyclables outside your apartment. They will attract animals and pests, causing a health and sanitation concern for you and your neighbors.

• If trash and recyclables are not disposed of properly, you and/or your apartment building may be billed for this violation and be charged with alleged violation of the Office of Residence Life Residential Policies. Please respect your environment and living area. Dispose of all items properly.

Noise Complaints Please be respectful of your neighbors. If you have concerns about noise coming from an apartment that is disturbing you, please talk with the residents living there. Conversely, if someone comes to you asking you to keep your noise level down, please be respectful and do so.

• If you have immediate concerns with noise, please contact the Department of Public Safety at 315.443.2224.

• If you would like to file a noise complaint with the Office of Residence Life- South Campus , please call us, email us, stop in, or contact the noise compliant telephone number at 315-443-3893 and pressing option #1 to relay your concern.

• Information completed via this form is not monitored 24 hours per day; however, it will be received and follow-up will occur.

Repairs/Maintenance/ Snow Removal If you have any maintenance needs, from a leaky faucet or squeaky door to needing a light bulb replaced, FIXit is ready to assist you. Contact them via twitter @SUFixit, email at fixit@syr.edu,315.443.4948.

Snow shovels are provide in each apartment. Residents are responsible for removing snow from their own walkways. In addition, residents with vehicles parked on South Campus should remove snow from around their vehicles on a regular basis to ensure that the university snow removal plows can see clearly.

Dining on South Campus: Goldstein Food Court: Goldstein Dining is part of the Goldstein Student Center on South Campus. Because this location is the hub of activity for South Campus students, Goldstein Dining offers a wide variety of food options, including a late-night to-go menu.

South Campus Bus Information Destination signs on the buses can be confusing, however, they are very helpful for students who need to travel from South Campus to Syracuse Stage and the Warehouse. If you are just trying to get to campus, it’s important to know that every bus that travels through South Campus operates to the main bus hub at College Place.

Listed below are some of the destination signs you may see operating to your bus stop on South Campus and an explanation of where they go.

“344-South Campus” - operates the South Campus route as far as College Place “244-Slocum Heights” – operates as far as College Place “444-Small Road” – operates as far as College Place “44-Manley” – operates as far as College Place “#43 Waverly Avenue” – operates to College Place, then continues down Sims Drive past Archbold Gym and the Carrier Dome. The #43 Waverly Avenue bus then operates on Irving Avenue to Waverly Avenue and will get you close to Whitman School of Management and Newhouse “#443-Connective Corridor” – operates to College Place, then continues down Sims Drive past Archbold Gym and the Carrier Dome. The #443 then operates on Irving Avenue to Syracuse Stage and then on to the Warehouse

Route Information #344 South Campus shuttles operate seven days a week until 2:50 am. #344 shuttles serve all South Campus shuttle stops and operate to College Place and Manley, however many #344 trips continue to Syracuse Stage and the Warehouse (these trips will have #443 Connective Corridor destination signs). All #344 shuttles are accessible, and have bike racks. #44 Manley shuttles operate weekdays between the hours of 6:17 and 10:08 am and 2:37 and 5:17 pm. #44 shuttles serve the Skytop Office Building, Skyhall Circle and Manley, and continue to College Place. All #344 shuttles are accessible, and have bike racks. #444 Small Road shuttles operate weekdays only and were designed specifically for peak service during busy class times.

The #444 Small Road’s short route starts at University Village Apartments and covers all bus stops along Small Road. #244 Slocum Heights shuttles operates through Slocum Heights and continue along all bus stops on Small Road. This bus operates weekdays during busy class times.

Note: The #443 Connective Corridor and the #43 Waverly Avenue are not South Campus routes, however, several buses that leave South Campus housing continue as a #443 Connective Corridor or #43 Waverly Avenue route.

Guest Parking All overnight guests must be registered with the Office of Residence Life. This policy is designed for the safety of residents, guests, and other members of the University community.

To obtain an Overnight Guest Parking Pass, Complete an Overnight Guest Registration Form from the ORL website.

Then bring the following to the office of Parking and Transit Services to purchase a permit: •

Permits may be purchased with cash, check or credit card for Manley and South Campus lots and some Main Campus lots depending upon space constraints.

On event days, game day parking rates apply to guest permits.

Students without the correct printout and/or without the appropriate vehicle information will not be able to purchase a permit.

To the Regional Transportation Center The Amtrack, Greyhound and New York Trailways buses all depart from the Regional Transportation Center.

Please refer to the Centro Syracuse University Hill Hospital schedule at: http://parking.syr.edu/other-transportation-resources/

for a list of shuttle times to and from the Regional Transportation Center.

Also note that Trailways operates a shuttle to New York City from the Syracuse University campus.

Students can call any of the local taxi companies for transportation to the airport. • The Syracuse University Student Association does contract shuttle service between main campus, the Regional Transportation Center and the airport before and after major breaks. •

Check the Student Association social media feeds for details during the appropriate time of the semester.

Bus Around Syracuse Syracuse University Offers free shuttle service to Tops Market with your SU Student ID. You will need to get to main campus and take the Drumlins #340 or #340C bus route to Tops Market. This bus picks up at the corner of Comstock Ave and University Place on main campus unless otherwise noted on the schedule.

Centro operates daily bus service to the Destiny Mall for $2.00 in each direction. Schedule information can be found at http://parking.syr.edu/other-transportation-resources/ *The Student Association provides free shuttle service to the mall on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the school year. Please refer to the parking and transit website for dates and time that this service is provided.

Zip Car Students, faculty, and staff from SU have been taking advantage of this car sharing program by self-reserving (through online and mobile devices) one of the 16 Zipcars on campus – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Zipcars are conveniently located on the SU campus in the following areas.

Zipcar offers more than 30 makes and models of self-service to residents and businesses looking for smart, simple and convenient solutions to their urban and campus transportation needs.

Students joining Zipcar will gain access to SU’s 16 Zipcars starting at $7.50/hour and $69/day.
