Materialisation Our group’s concept is to demonstrate how shops in Sham Shui Po use stocks and products to divine space.

This series of photos shows powerful dynamics since each photo is taken from the same angle yet the content within are different.

BLIND CONTOUR DRAWING

DO be aware of the neccessity of careful observation of the reflection of sunlight shimmering on the copper surface

SKETCHES EMBODYING A CONCEPT Given 4 criteria and 4 motions, I had to develop 6 drawings using 2 of the words combined.

Penetration Interlocking Fragmentation Dissolving Rotation Layering Extension Shering I chose penetration and layering.

I illuminated some objects with light and record the shadow of them on the wall.

In order to create the smooth and soft quality shadow has, I first darken the paper with graphite stick, then erase the brighter parts and hedge the darker parts with pencil.

PERFECT CUBE We had to make a cube of 150x150x150 mm3

CONCECPTUAL CUBE Using the word “Interlocking�, I had to craft a cube which is complex yet not too figurative and delibrate.

All sides of the cube need to be democratic, but not the same.

I began to brain-storm some concepts about interlocking:

Then I think of Tetris, a game to combine blocks together to form a complete surface.

My initial idea is to make a bunch of small cubes and stack them into shapes like this.

So then I start my first draft model, using 1 m3 cubes as bases and combine them to one another.

FEEDBACK Try to make blocks like this instead of individual cubes.

And so it began my long journey of cutting and gluing...

In order to make it exactly the right side, I had to subtract the thickness of the cardboard everytime I cut the template. Therefore, I used the alternatives of slicing 45 degrees on each edge to omit the calculation.

It’s tough but at least I didn’t have to do the math.

After making the blocks, it’s time to

ASSEMBLE!

And this is the presentation of our cubes.

AXONOMATIRC DRAWING ELEVATION, PLAN & SECTION For the drawings, each had to be in 1:1 scale (150x150x150 mm).

Angles in the axonomatric drawing needed to be in 45 degrees.

DO boundaries of 2 cm beneath the edges of the paper DON’T handwrite the text DO use set square and T ruler DON’T use cold-pressed water colour paper DO use sharp 4H pecil for draft, 2B pencil for darker outlining DON’T smear the paper, lines needs to be defined and clear

BASE OF THE CUBE After the drawing, we went back to 3D modeling and this time, we had to make a base of 450x300x50 mm3 fand put our cube on top.

We had to consider the

figure-ground relationship

how to link the cube and the box into one united thing?

We also had to think of

gradiation

the subtle yet graduate changes from the cube to the base.

My initial design is to change the negative space of the cube into positive space of the base.

If the surface of the cube is solid, the opposing surface of the base will be void.

Thus, there would be a complementary side of the cube right under the surface of the cube.

FEEDBACK There were not enough void in the base.

It looked too much like a box.

Not complex enough.

I was told to tear down some surface of the tetris blocks and open up some space inside.

My refined idea is to use fragmented tetris blocks to create a base. Each tetris blocks were either unfinished or missing parts of it. Then they were attached to each other to form a large Tetris surface but in 3D. Therefore, when looking from the bottom to the top, it graduately built up.

This time, it was more complex.

The broken cube shows relationship with the fragmented base.

PLASTER CASTING We need to make a 200x200x200 mm3 plaster by enlarging 20x20x20 mm3 of the base.

DO make cottle boards to surround the plaster cube as plaster will expand due to its reaction with water

DON’T wait until Wednesday night to pour the plaster because it takes much time to dry

DO try out the plaster to water ratio DON’T pour the plaster in saparated in 2 times, the colour will differentiate DO stir thoroughly DON’T stir for too long or else it will solidify DO apply vasline on the polystyrene foam mold before pouring the plaster DON’T make a mess!

WOODEN PLINTH Hard wood, ply wood & soft wood Choosing 2 out of these 3 woods, we were to make a wooden plinth of 100x20x20 cm3 to hold the plaster.

Following my theme of Tetris, I crafted a 1:5 model with the same theme.

FEEDBACK Too complicated if crafted from wood.

May add some Tetris blocks linking the plaster and the wood, grabing the plaster.

Less is more.

Second draft model

I tried to simplify my design by reducing the amount of Tetris blocks while enlarging those that remains. Instead of blocks, I make them into 1 plain. I also extend parts of the wood upward to the plaster.

FEEDBACK The Tetris plate were really flat.

It could be modified by saparating them into individual verticle pieces and arrage them back and forth.

So then I begin to refine my current design and make this

VISIT TO THE CEMETRY We looked at how tombstone diverse among cultures and religions.

Japanese tombstone

Afterwards, we cleaned the tombstone will water and sponges, and removed the vegetation and cover the stone with gravel.

PLATFORM Our second last assignment, a 80x60 cm platform made with high and low triangular spurs.

DO use wood blocks to support DON’T use foam board DO make around 7-15 surface DON’T make the triangles too pointy.

Finally, our last assignment topic is to create a grave for a dead person.

I chose Joseph Stalin, the former leader of the Soviet Union

COLLAGE

Presentation I originally wanted to use metal wire to extend the platform. However, I could not get them in time. There was a lot of empty space on the briefcase. The platform needed to extend more. Moreover, not much shadow is casted onto the white surface. The figures needed to pop out more. Most importantly, Stalin is missing!

After amendment, the thin strips of cardboard changed to thin metal wire. The briefcase looked more populated with more human figure added. Stronger shadow is casted onto the white surface due to better lighting.

EPILOGUE Fundamentals are the building blocks of fun.

Before entering School of Design, I thought EID should be about spatial design.

We should learn computer modeling and drawing floorplans.

Though what I have done in this semester might seems unrelated to our major, they are the basics of what I had to deal with in our next 3 and a half years.

In this semester, I have learned that: Professor will randomly take students out on field trips.

Professor will tear down your models without your truthful, honest permission.

Professors will change your entire initial idea.

Professor will give you insurmountable workload.

Despite all that, I am satisfied with what I had chose to study and I find joy in it.

Therefore, I await for the future.

Afterall, this is just the beginning our design journey.
