What is a good design?

A good design should adjust to the people, not to adjust the people.

A good design should adjust to the people, not to adjust the people.

Then we decided to make a carrom which its height is adjustable.

An abled player can raise the table up.

Then when it is the amputated player's turn, he can lower the table as well.

That is what it is called a simple yet good design.

2 wheels are installed on one side of the stand while stopper are installed on the other.

For lower height, user simply unlock the wheel and let it slide forward due to the forced acted by the table surface beneath. The x shape of thr stand become flatter as a result. For normal height, users can push the leg hanger to create a thinner x shape. Thus, the table rises.

This model is created in the scale of 1:10.

At normal height, the model is 9 cm tall.

At wheel-chair level, it is 6 cm tall.

Feedback

The design works theatrically, yet the wheels might not be strong enough to support the x shape in reality.

He suggest us to add hooks as extra support. He also suggest us to get a actual carrom table for deeper analyses.

Part 1- Legs

Measurement We need to do measurement. No matter which alternatives we take, we had to stop relying on information online and observe the real thing.

So we went to Yuen Wa disguised as customers to take notes at what we could not see online.

The drawer is just large enough to input the chess.

It holds the que It stores the chess which fall into it.

The drawer is over half of the table length.

It lies on the centre of the table.

The height of the table is around waist level (~100 cm) For wheelchairs,it is around 50 cm from the seat to the ground.

A person would be approximately 110 cm tall when sitting on a wheelchair.

Research about the adjustable table leg We search online for ready-made table leg which is height-adjustable.

Finally We found one in TaoBao!

Transporting the table from Mainland China to PolyU...

We, two girls, need to carry a 30 kg table from Hung Hom Bay back to PolyU.

And It broke!

Fortunately, it is just the glas surface that breaks and we won't use it. However we inform the TaoBao shop owner.

And he promised to refund RMB $ 50.

Part 2 - Surface

Fund-raising Knowing that there are carrom existing in the market, we would rather buy a carrom and reform it than make a new one ourselves.

Not only does it waste resources, it also waste our money to purchase the materials.

But students, can't afford a carrom. Thus, we are suggested to do fundraising for our project.

3 ways to raise fund Ask classmates to donate

Fail. We had asked within our class but none were really willing to donate.

Ask charities or campsites to donate their old carrom

Possible. We have asked around 40 charities and campsites. Only one of them reply us.

Sell our product to the charities

Possible. 5 of them said that they are interested and ask for a proposal of our product.

An email that we send to the campsite of HKPA after knowing that they may donate a carrom to us.

Worst case scenario Build one by ourselves

We have waited around a week. It is impossible to keep on waiting. Therefore, we design to start make a carrom table ourselves, just in case the carrom we're waiting never come

Sketches of our design We make some amendment and input new features in our design.

1. One more drawer is installed on the other side.

2. The drawers are shortened but widened to maintain its function of storing chess, at the same time lies within half of the table length.

3. Slides are installed linking the holes and the drawers, so that the chess can slide and return into the drawers easily without players picking them up after the game.

We planned on laser cutting the table surface, as this method is the neatest.

And one day, God have mercy on us

On Wednesday November 16, HKPA contacted us, agreeing that they can provide us the carrom we asked for.

Thus, we went to Quarry Bay on the following Friday to pick up the table.

Part 3 - The assemble

Without further ado, we remodel the table by taking away the original legs and attach our adjustable one onto it.

We glued 4 magnets on each of the corner sticking out from the leg

Place the table onto the leg according to the placement of the magnets.

Then, we trace out circular double-sided tape and glue the magnets onto the leg with it.

And so, our removable table is complete.

Afterwards, do the exact same thing for the table.

Our next step is to is to come up with a brand name for our product.

Why you may ask?

It is because of its features of rising up, going down and rotating that reminded us of helicopters.

to match with the theme of helicopter, as it is the sign on a helicopter landing pad.
