PUBLISHER’S NOTE

What It Means to Be the Best of NP Student®

When I think of the word best, it evokes qualities like proven, trustworthy, credible, and indispensable. These are not just traits we aspire to embody, they are the foundation of what we bring to you through every issue of NP Student® Magazine (NPSM). What makes this issue special is that it encapsulates the very essence of what we stand for: uncovering the hidden gems that were created to jumpstart, enhance, or smoothen your journey as NP students.

Over the past year, our team has worked tirelessly to explore invaluable resources. We have connected with organizations, institutions, influencers, podcasters, and entrepreneurs to better understand their offerings and how they can serve you. Because let’s face it, finding out about an incredible resource after the fact is a frustrating experience, especially when it could have made a difference in your training.

For those of you who are new to NPSM, our publication is guided by the 7 Aspects of NP Student Life Framework. This holistic approach recognizes the diverse needs of NP students beyond academics, needs that, when addressed, can better position you for success both in school and beyond. The importance of meeting these basic needs is not a new concept.

Let’s reflect on the original NP students of 1965. These trailblazing nurses were often mid-career professionals, balancing education with work and family responsibilities. Many were mothers, navigating societal expectations while pursuing advanced professional roles. Unlike today, NP students come from varied backgrounds, some rely on personal resources, while others receive employer support to finance their education.

The Best of NP Student® builds on this legacy. By addressing ongoing gaps in NP education, such as mentorship, holistic resources, and community engagement, we aim to ensure that today’s NP students are better equipped to thrive. In this issue, you will find updates on individuals who have utilized our platform and tools to excel in their careers, as well as features on resources that will empower you to tackle the challenges of rigorous education, financial constraints, and a complex healthcare system.

Our cover story highlights Dr. Jonathan Llamas, who embodies the harmony of faith, family, and practice, a perfect alignment with our 2024 theme, Mind, Body, and Goals. His journey exemplifies the power of prioritizing what matters most while pursuing excellence in professional and personal endeavors.

As we celebrate the best of NP Student®, I invite you to reflect on how this magazine can serve as a trusted companion on your path. Together, let’s continue building a legacy of excellence for nurse practitioner students everywhere.

With you in success,

Let’s connect

FAITH, FAMILY, & PRACTICE WITH DR. JONATHAN LLAMAS

Behind every inspiring nurse practitioner’s story is a path of perseverance and intention, and Dr. Jonathan Llamas, a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, is no exception. Dr. Llamas has always been a familiar name among nurse practitioner students, but this year, he has reached a new pinnacle. From his days as a driven NP student and invaluable contributor to NP Student® Magazine to a distinguished professional, he embodies the balance, compassion, and focus that we believe aspiring nurse practitioners strive to emulate.

In this exclusive feature, Dr. Llamas reflects on his journey, shares insights for the next generation of NPs, and opens up about the faith, family, and focus that fuel his practice. Here is his story.

NPSM: What motivated you to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner?

Dr. Llamas: I had a deep desire to innovate and transform the landscape of mental health care. While I have always been drawn to caring for others, my motivation extended well beyond simply prescribing medication or delivering clinical treatment. I envisioned myself as a provider who creates

a safe space for patients, listens empathetically, and collaborates with them on a treatment plan that is both holistic and personalized.

The path to becoming a PMHNP was not without its challenges, but I chose this course because I frequently witnessed how mental health struggles were misunderstood, overlooked, or stigmatized. Many people were suffering in silence, and I felt a profound calling to be the kind of practitioner who meets them where they are, without judgment, offering them a space where they feel valued, seen, and understood.

Providing excellent psychiatric care goes beyond symptom management; it’s about helping individuals reclaim their lives. I aspired to bridge the gap between the science of nursing and the art of empathy, using my knowledge not only to diagnose but to truly support and uplift those navigating their mental health journey. Each day, I am driven by the belief that mental health care is inherently transformative, and I feel privileged to walk alongside my patients, witness their resilience, and support them as they rediscover hope.

NPSM: What does a typical day at the job look like for you?

Dr. Llamas: I start each day with a prayer of gratitude, which helps center me and reminds me to approach the day’s unique challenges with compassion. Then, I review my caseload, which involves going through patient charts, familiarizing myself with their histories, performing medication reconciliations, and preparing for the specific needs each patient may present that day. I also prepare my space for virtual consultations, ensuring everything is set up to provide a seamless experience for my patient.

Every day is unique and requires my undivided attention whether I am conducting an initial assessment, discussing treatment plans, engaging in supportive psychotherapy, or managing medications.

Even though I mostly work remotely, there are some days when I do come into the office and conduct inperson consultations for my patients who may require additional support or prefer in-person sessions which

Photo credit: Courtesy of Jonathan Llamas

also gives me a unique opportunity to connect with my patients and my colleagues in a way virtual sessions cannot replicate.

Regardless of where I work however, my goal in creating a warm and

welcoming environment remains the same and I take pride in being fully present in every patient encounter, listening intently, and responding not just to their symptomatology, but to the whole person.

After each patient encounter, I take the time to ensure that I document accordingly, make changes to their treatment plan if necessary, coordinate a plan of care with other ancillary healthcare providers if required, and stay up to date with the latest research to ensure that I’m providing the most up-to-date and evidence-based care that I can provide.

I am intentional and passionate about what I do, and one of the greatest advantages of telemedicine is the ability to provide high-quality mental health care to those who might otherwise struggle to access it. Being able to reach individuals in underserved or remote areas and offer them the support they need truly makes my work incredibly fulfilling.

NPSM: What do you enjoy most about being an NP?

Dr. Llamas: What I enjoy most about being a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is the incredible privilege of walking alongside my patients as they find healing and hope in their lives. There’s something deeply rewarding about being a source of support for my patients during their most vulnerable moments, and knowing that, in even the smallest ways, I can help ease their burdens.

The most heartwarming part of my job is witnessing their progress— whether it’s finding a treatment that works, learning how to cope with their struggles, or simply feeling heard and understood, sometimes for the first time.

It’s those moments of connection and seeing someone regain their sense of independence that truly fills my heart and knowing that I’m making a difference in their journey helps keep me passionate about what I do every single day.

NPSM: How do you integrate family values into your approach to patient care? or What are some ways you help your patients feel comfortable during a visit?

Dr. Llamas: Family is incredibly important to me, and I strive to incorporate those values into my patient care by treating each individual with the same level of compassion and respect that I would want for my own loved ones.

I believe that healing goes beyond just treating symptoms—it’s about understanding a person’s whole life, including the unique relationships and support systems that shape them. Because of this, I like to use each session as an opportunity to really listen, to learn about their family dynamics, and the values that are important to them. This helps me provide care that’s not only clinically sound but also aligned with their own personal beliefs and values.

To help my patients feel comfortable during a visit, I also try to make a concerted effort to create an atmosphere that is warm, inviting, and supportive. I know that it can be very difficult to talk about mental health, so I always strive to make my patients feel heard and valued and I focus on building trust and rapport by actively listening, validating their concerns, and reassuring them that this is a safe space.

Whether we’re meeting virtually or in person, my goal is for them to feel at ease, knowing they’re in a place where they will be treated with empathy and

respect which is something that has guided my practice from the very beginning.

NPSM: Mental health care can be demanding. What do you do to take care of your own feelings and well-being?

Dr. Llamas: Providing compassionate mental health care is emotionally demanding, so I prioritize my own well-being and practice what I preach.

My faith in God is a significant source of strength, and daily prayer helps me stay grounded and centered through the challenges of each day.

Spending quality time with my fiancé, family, and friends brings me joy and reminds me of what truly matters in life.

Additionally, I find comfort in singing, writing, playing, and listening to music. These activities are powerful outlets for me, healing my soul and allowing me to express my emotions creatively. They offer a sense of peace, especially after long and arduous days.

NPSM: We’ve had the privilege of working with you since your time in NP school back in 2019. Could you share with us how your journey has evolved from being a student to where you are today?

Dr. Llamas: My journey from being a student to where I am today has been a deeply fulfilling evolution, marked by growth, challenges, and a passion for learning. As a student, I was eager to absorb as much knowledge as possible, but I quickly realized that becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner was more than just mastering clinical skills and psychopharmacology—it was also about learning how to develop the ability to connect with people on a human level.

During my time working in the inpatient psychiatric units as a registered nurse, I was inspired by the impact that mental health care could have on people’s lives, and it became clear to me that this was where God was calling me to be.

After two years of working full-time as a registered nurse, I decided to pursue my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree to advance my education and deepen my expertise in psychiatric care, while honing my ability to foster meaningful connections with my patients.

Each clinical experience and patient interaction has profoundly shaped my nursing journey, fostering greater confidence and compassion in my approach. Since then, my path has expanded into the realms of social media, television, publishing, and public speaking, allowing me to broaden my mental health advocacy and provide education and support in ways I never imagined.

Reflecting on my journey, I am profoundly grateful for both the successes and setbacks that have shaped me into who I am today. Each experience has offered valuable lessons, and I look forward to the opportunities and growth that lie ahead.

NPSM: What challenges do you believe male nurses experience in and out of school? How have you navigated them in your career?

Dr. Llamas: Male nurses tend to face unique challenges, both in academic and professional settings, often stemming from societal stereotypes and traditional gender roles.

In nursing school, male students may feel out of place in a predominantly female field, sometimes facing assumptions that they’re less nurturing or aren’t equipped to thrive in the profession.

Additionally, male nurses may struggle with societal expectations regarding masculinity, which can create intense pressure to hide their emotions, prevent them from seeking support, or drop out of nursing school entirely.

I have been able to successfully navigate those challenges by fostering open communication and building supportive networks with colleagues, regardless of gender, and staying focused on my passion for helping others.

By emphasizing collaboration and compassion, I’ve quickly learned that effective nursing transcends gender, and anyone, regardless of who they are, can be an excellent nurse if they are truly intentional about making a difference in the lives of those around them.

When we create spaces where everyone feels valued and accepted, we not only improve our work environment but also enrich the care that we provide for the communities we serve.

NPSM: Your platform Mind & Heart has gained remarkable attention over the past year. What inspired you to create it, and what message do you hope to convey?

Dr. Llamas: My mental health brand, Mind & Heart, arose from my desire to blend my love of art, fashion, and design with my passion for nursing and mental health.

I wanted to create a brand dedicated to spreading mental health awareness through inspirational designs, positive messaging, and unique storytelling.

By combining my love for creativity with my passion for advocacy, I aim to foster conversations about mental health and provide individuals with a way to express their unique experiences and stories both visually and creatively.

Through Mind & Heart, I hope to empower others to embrace their own journeys, celebrate resilience, and promote a deeper understanding of mental health in a way that is meaningful and impactful to them.

NPSM: What hidden talent do you have that might surprise people?

Outside of nursing, I also enjoy songwriting and recording music under my stage name, Jon Raphael. Music has

played a pivotal role in my life, serving as a creative outlet that allows me to express my thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a way that only music can convey. You can stream and listen to my music on Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and all other streaming platforms!

NPSM: What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received, and who gave it to you?

Dr. Llamas: The best piece of advice that I have received is to leave the world a much better place than when you found it. This wisdom was shared by my parents, who continue to play an influential role in shaping who I am today. By striving to be a driving force for good, I have learned to commit myself fully to the purpose that God has given me. This guidance inspires me to engage in acts of kindness and compassion, both personally and professionally, and it serves as a reminder that every interaction, no matter how small, holds the potential to create meaningful change. Looking back on how far I have come, I feel blessed to be able to do what I do and I am confident that I would not be here today without the grace of God and the unwavering love and support of my fiancé, family, friends, and everyone who has been a part of my nursing journey.

Dr. Llamas’ Take for NP Students

To all those who are currently in NP school, I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that you are on a remarkable journey that holds the power to transform lives.

Embrace every challenge as an opportunity for growth and learning, and never underestimate the impact you can have on your patients and communities.

As you navigate your own unique journey, know that your passion, dedication, and unique experiences are what help make the nursing profession so great.

Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone, build strong connections with your peers, seek guidance from mentors, and maintain an insatiable desire to remain curious and nonjudgmental. You are the future of nursing, and the world needs your voice and presence now more than ever.

STOP ‘PICKING UP’ SKILLS: 14 ESSENTIAL PROCEDURES YOU SHOULD KNOW

Are you a student entering an NP program, or perhaps a recent graduate, wondering about your newly acquired knowledge base and whether you’re prepared to meet the demands of your new role? Do you ever question how well you will be able to “fit in” or “keep up” with your clinical procedures?

Here is a surprising fact: credentialing bodies, such as the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), which evaluate the quality and acceptability of Nurse Practitioner programs, currently do not consider the presence of skill or procedure training in their assessments.

This is a significant oversight. Nurse Practitioners are expected to perform a range of procedures in many clinical settings, yet they often find themselves at a disadvantage compared to their Physician Assistant (PA) counterparts. PA students benefit from organized clinical placements where they acquire and master various skills through structured rotations.

By contrast, family nurse practitioner (FNP) students are generally advised to “pick up” these skills during their clinical experiences, which are often inconsistently organized. While there are workshops available, either in-person or virtually,

IMPACT Co-Founders, Brenda Young, DNP, NP-C and Beverly Metze, MSN, FNP-C facilitating skills training.

these may not always provide the comprehensive, hands-on training needed to ensure competency.

Now is the time for a shift in how procedure training is approached. FNPs need to gain proficiency in key skills early in their careers to deliver the quality care their patients deserve. Here are essential procedures and competencies every family nurse practitioner should master:

■ Wound Care: Assess, anesthetize, cleanse, and close routine wounds using tissue adhesives, staples, or suturing techniques.

■ Abscess Assessment and Management: Effectively manage abscesses from assessment to resolution.

■ Digital Block: Learn the technique for performing a digital block for pain management.

■ Acute Paronychia Management: Address and treat acute paronychia effectively.

■ Subungual Hematoma Interventions: Understand how to treat and relieve pain from subungual hematomas.

■ Mental Health Screenings: Perform common mental health assessments to guide patient care.

■ BPPV Management: Gain competency in diagnosing and treating benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) using Dix Hallpike and Epley maneuvers.

■ Ring and Fish Hook Removal: Master safe removal techniques for common minor injuries.

■ Foreign Body Removal: Understand key principles for foreign body extraction in various body parts.

■ Thrombosed Hemorrhoid Relief: Manage and relieve symptoms of thrombosed hemorrhoids.

■ Tick Management: Include Lyme disease prophylaxis in the management of tick bites.

■ Eye Assessment with Fluorescein Staining: Perform comprehensive eye exams and treat injuries using fluorescein.

■ Reversing Nursemaid Elbow: Learn the technique to reduce a dislocated elbow in children.

■ Epistaxis Management: Assess and treat nosebleeds, ensuring patient comfort and safety.

As a newly graduated NP, you will often define your scope of practice through discussions with your employer, determining which skills and procedures

are required for your role. Scope of practice regulations vary by state, with some states granting full practice authority, allowing NPs to operate independently, while others require physician collaboration or supervision.

Interactive Minor Procedure and Competency Training (IMPACT) offers a solution for bridging this skills gap, offering comprehensive training and certification. Visit our website via the QR code to learn more and start your journey toward mastering essential NP procedures.

1. Many NP students and new graduates are juggling board prep with work, family, and life. How does The Nursing Studio help streamline this process for today’s busy, tech-savvy learners?

At The Nursing Studio, we understand the unique challenges of balancing board preparation with everyday responsibilities. To address this, we offer a wide range of flexible resources, including books, eBooks, video lessons, online courses, and interactive tools such as digital flashcards and question banks— all accessible across multiple devices. Additionally, we provide personalized one-on-one review sessions that can be scheduled at the learner’s convenience. These features empower students to study at their own pace, wherever and whenever it works best for them.

2. As NP graduates transition into practice, maintaining certifications becomes critical. How does The Nursing Studio prepare them not only to pass boards but to stay on top of their board renewals and continuing education?

In addition to board preparation, The Nursing Studio is dedicated to supporting the long-term success of NPs. Through our Membership, we are introducing a new feature designed to track certification renewal requirements seamlessly. This ensures graduates remain up-to-date with their board renewals and continuing education needs. By integrating this functionality, we help NPs focus on advancing their careers without the stress of managing deadlines or searching for continuing education (CE) opportunities.

3. Does The Nursing Studio offer additional resources, like contact hours or specialty courses, for students who return after passing their boards? If so, how do these resources support their growth as practicing NPs?

Yes, The Nursing Studio provides a variety of CE opportunities for graduates. We have been offering CE courses for years and are now updating our platform to launch new courses for 2025. These offerings include practice refreshers, advanced specialty topics, and essential skills training, such as EKG interpretation.

Designed to enhance clinical expertise, these resources ensure NPs remain current in their practice while continually developing their skill set to provide the highest quality care.

4. Are there specific features or products that make a difference in Millennials and GenZ’s learning experience?

Absolutely. We recognize that Millennials and Gen Z learners thrive on personalized and flexible education. These generations value interactive, tech-driven solutions rather than traditional, “one-size-fits-all” approaches. By tailoring our tools and resources to meet individual needs, we create a learning experience that is engaging, adaptable, and effective, helping students feel both confident and prepared.

5. What do you believe is the most common misconception students have about board prep, and how does The Nursing Studio help them overcome it as they prepare to step into practice?

A common misconception is that students should wait until after graduation to start board prep, or that merely reviewing material is sufficient to pass. At The Nursing Studio, we address this by encouraging early and consistent preparation. Our resources are designed to help students gradually build their knowledge over time, preventing last-minute cramming. More importantly, we focus on teaching students how to apply their knowledge rather than relying on rote memorization. This approach fosters a deeper understanding of the material and instills the confidence they need to excel on their exams and in clinical practice.

CATCHING UP WITH KADIA AND KIM: WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

At NP Student® Magazine, our mission has always been clear: to keep students updated with every aspect of their life in and out of NP school. Over the years, we have had the privilege of witnessing incredible stories of growth, perseverance, and success—stories that have inspired us as much as they’ve inspired our readers.

For this special “Best of NP Student®” issue, we’re taking a moment to look back and celebrate two individuals whose lives and careers have intersected with our mission. One graced our cover during their time in NP school, a defining moment that highlighted their potential and vision for the future. The other turned to our resources during the challenging days of the pandemic, finding guidance and encouragement when the world was turned upside down.

Where are they now? How has their journey evolved, and what lessons have they carried forward? We caught up with both to hear their stories, reflections, and insights. Their words remind us why we do what we do—and we hope they inspire you as much as they have inspired us.

Here, they open up about their experiences, sharing lessons learned and insights that continue to shape their paths.

Kadia Prospere, MSN, FNP-C

1. Where are you now?

I currently work as a nurse practitioner in two areas: aesthetic injections and telemedicine health and wellness. Unlike many family nurse practitioners who start in primary care, I began my career in health and wellness, where I have spent six rewarding years specializing in weight management and conducting good faith exams, and promoting overall well-being. Four years ago, I expanded into aesthetics, combining creativity and precision

in my work with neuromodulators and lip fillers. This path has allowed me to integrate science, artistry, and patient-centered care, creating a meaningful impact in the lives of those I serve.

2. What was your biggest challenge transitioning into the workforce?

The biggest challenge I faced was adjusting from working three 12hour night shifts to a schedule of five 8-hour day shifts. This shift in my routine required me to rethink

how I managed my time and, for the first time, how to effectively use PTO—a concept I didn’t have to consider in my previous roles.

3. Looking back, what aspect of your NP education has been the most valuable to your career? Is there something you wish you had learned that would have prepared you?

The aspect of my NP education that has been the most valuable to my career was “refer out”. We don’t know everything. We don’t

have all the answers. And that’s OK. There are specialties for a reason. If it is outside of the scope of my practice, I know when to refer out to a specialist.

4. What advice would you offer to current NP students? Any lessons or strategies that have been impactful for you?

The advice that I would offer to current NP students is trust your gut. You know what you know and you don’t know what you don’t know. Sage advice that I received as a young nursing student that still applied as an NP student. Another piece of advice is that it is OK to pivot. I knew that health, wellness, prevention, and education were very important to me and would become an integral part of my current practice. I knew that is where my strength lies. And that it is what I am most passionate about. Know your worth. Ask questions. Advocate for yourself and your patients. Negotiate your salary!

1. Where are you now?

I am currently working as a Geriatric Nurse Practitioner (NP) on a mobile care team, providing primary care services to patients in their home settings. My daily responsibilities include managing a panel of patients, prescribing medications, and ordering labs and x-rays—all delivered directly in the comfort of their homes. As a cannabis nurse entrepreneur, I also provide educational services to healthcare professionals and patients. These services cover a range of topics, including understanding the cannabis plant, exploring different methods of consumption, and navigating cannabis policies and state legislation.

2. What was your biggest challenge transitioning into the workforce?

My biggest challenge was passing my board exam—I didn’t pass on my first attempt. To anyone in the same position, I’d say: give yourself grace, stay calm, and find a review course that matches your learning style. Pay attention to the details, as they make a significant difference. After graduating in 2021 during the height of the COVID years, I took some much-needed time for therapy before passing my boards. My first position after licensure didn’t align with my core values, so I transitioned to working with one of my mentors in their primary care office before landing my current role. If you’re open to sharing, your story of persistence and triumph can inspire others.

3. Looking back, what aspect of your NP education has been the most valuable to your career? Is there something you wish you had learned that would have better prepared you?

The relationships I formed during clinical rotations and with my professors have been the most valuable to my career. Professors can serve as excellent references, and clinical rotations often lead to your first job opportunity. Staying connected helped me tremendously—I used my professors for references and joined a group chat with classmates for mutual support and job leads. My program was inperson, which offered additional opportunities, including electives in Conversational Spanish, Managing an NP Business, and Nurse Education Certification. I chose the nurse education course, though hindsight shows I might have benefited more from business management, especially as an entrepreneur.

4. What advice would you offer to current NP students?

My best advice is to give yourself grace and treat clinical rotations like a job—because they might lead to your first NP position. Use this time to ask questions, learn, and showcase your skills. Preparation is key: arrive early, review patient charts, and be ready to present patients to your preceptor or colleagues. Develop strategies for success, such as creating a list of differential diagnoses and seeking help when needed. Time management and organization are critical assets that will serve you well both during school and in your career.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

In the world of advanced practice nursing, educators play a pivotal role in molding the future of healthcare. It is with great pride that we spotlight Dr. Natasha McClure, a distinguished faculty member from Vanderbilt University’s School of Nursing in Nashville, Tennessee. Her dedication to fostering excellence in nursing education is reflected in her impactful work with future nurse practitioners.

Natasha McClure, DNP, CPNP-PC, PMHNP-BC, developed an academic-practice partnership between a nursing school and outpatient clinic, integrating home visits for children with asthma into community health clinicals. This approach ensures education aligns with current practice. Hands-on skills practice in patients’ homes bridges the gap between theoretical and practical knowledge, enhances NP clinical skills, and facilitates an understanding of barriers to asthma control outside of the primary care office. The APP extends clinical resources into patients’ homes, potentially improving chronic disease management and patient outcomes by eliminating structural barriers to care, such as transportation, and facilitating clinical intervention between office visits.

FROM SEARCHING TO MATCHED: HOW DR. ANNIE DEPASQUALE

REVOLUTIONIZED COLLABORATION

When it comes to employment, many nurse practitioners face the daunting task of finding a collaborative physician, whether they are seeking a position with an employer or starting their own practice. This process, often marked by cold calls and uncertainty, is further complicated by the need to establish a partnership built on mutual trust and compatibility. Some state practice laws impose significant barriers, requiring NPs to operate under career-long supervision by a physician, limiting their ability to practice independently and provide patient care effectively. Dr. Anne DePasquale, a pioneering physician and founder of Collaborating Docs, is transforming this process. She shares how her innovative solutions are revolutionizing the way NPs and physicians collaborate, breaking down barriers and fostering stronger, more effective partnerships

1. What inspired you to launch Collaborating Docs, and how does it address the challenges faced by NPs and PAs?

I was inspired to launch Collaborating Docs after seeing firsthand the

challenges that nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) faced in states that require a collaborating physician. As a practicing physician, I have worked alongside so many talented NPs and PAs who wanted the independence to run their own practices but were held back by the administrative burden and difficulty of finding reliable collaborators. I knew there had to be a better way to support them, and started doing so as a collaborating physician myself. Eventually, there were more providers needing help than I could support myself, which led to the idea for Collaborating Docs.

Collaborating Docs bridges that gap by providing NPs and PAs with easy access to collaborating physicians who understand their needs and are fully committed to supporting their practice. We handle the paperwork, compliance, and ongoing communication, so they can focus on what matters most—caring for their patients. Our mission is to help these professionals practice more independently and confidently, knowing they have a trusted partner behind them.

2. What influenced you to build an all-NP team at Collaborating Docs, and how has this shaped your approach to collaboration with nurse practitioners and physician assistants?

Building an all-NP team at Collaborating Docs was an intentional decision rooted in our commitment to being a company that supports NPs and honors their opportunity for growth and leadership. We believe it’s important that our team reflects the clients we serve. By having NPs on our team, we ensure that we truly understand the needs, concerns, and unique perspectives of our clients, because we’ve been in their shoes.

This has shaped our approach to collaboration by allowing us to provide more personalized, empathetic, and relevant support. Our team doesn’t just offer collaboration from a distance—we are actively involved in the NP community and deeply invested in their success. This alignment makes our services more than just a compliance solution; it’s a partnership designed to empower NPs and PAs to practice confidently and independently.

3. Can you share two success stories of NPs who have benefited from your platform?

Chris is an NP based in New York City who initially came to Collaborating Docs looking to break into the niche field of men’s aesthetics. With a deep passion for providing tailored aesthetic services for men—a growing and often overlooked market—Chris wanted to expand his practice but needed a collaborating physician to meet state requirements.

Collaborating Docs provided Chris with the support he needed, matching him with a collaborating physician who understood his vision and was equally passionate about innovative aesthetics.

Since partnering with us, Chris has become a pioneer in the field of men’s aesthetics, building a loyal client base in NYC. His unique approach has positioned him as a leader in this niche, and he is now expanding his practice to a second location in

California. Chris’s journey highlights the power of vision and specialized care, and we are proud to have played a role in helping him grow his practice.

Holly is an NP serving her rural community in Mississippi, where access to healthcare is limited. After years of working in a hospital setting, she saw a need for more personalized family care in her area and made the courageous decision to open her own practice. Holly partnered with Collaborating Docs to meet the state’s collaborating physician requirements, and we helped her find the right physician who shared her commitment to providing accessible, high-quality care in underserved areas.

Since then, Holly has become a respected cornerstone in her community, offering comprehensive family care to patients who often struggle to access medical services. Her practice has become a trusted healthcare resource for families in the region, and her impact is felt across multiple generations. Collaborating Docs is honored to support Holly’s mission, allowing her to focus on what she does best—taking care of her patients and making a difference in her community.

4. As you reflect on your journey, what changes do you hope to see in NP-physician collaboration in 2025, and how can your story inspire aspiring nurse practitioners to pursue their goals?

As we look toward 2025, I hope to see NP-physician collaboration evolve to better meet the growing healthcare needs across the country. Nurse Practitioners are uniquely

Dr. Annie DePasquale, Founder of Collaborating Docs, advancing APRN collaboration

positioned to fill critical gaps in care, particularly in underserved areas where access to healthcare is limited. I believe collaboration between NPs and physicians will continue to strengthen, allowing both professions to work together more efficiently, complement each other’s

expertise, and deliver high-quality care to more patients.

Through my journey with Collaborating Docs, I hope to inspire aspiring NPs to recognize the incredible opportunities that lie ahead. The demand for nurse practitioners is increasing, and with

the right support, you can play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare. My story is a reminder that with determination and a focus on building strong professional networks, NPs can make a real difference in the lives of their patients while advancing their own careers.

HERE’S HOW THERAPYCONNECTED HELPS FUTURE NURSE PRACTITIONERS STAND OUT

In today’s healthcare landscape, the integration of physical and mental health is more important than ever. As future nurse practitioners (NPs), you’ll be at the forefront of delivering holistic patient care—care that not only addresses the body but the mind as well. But how can you prepare for this emerging frontier, and what tools will help you succeed?

TherapyConnected is addressing this need by offering a platform that connects licensed mental health professionals with key referral sources, increasing visibility and providing streamlined access to a targeted audience. With services ranging from professional brand building to marketing support and feedback from the medical community, TherapyConnected is transforming how mental health professionals reach patients and collaborate with healthcare providers.

We sat down with Kwane Annakie, VP of TherapyConnected, to discuss the platform’s innovative approach to mental health care, the future of the field, and the key insights every NP student should have as they enter this rapidly evolving landscape.

Kwane Annakie, VP of TherapyConnected, discussing mental health solutions in Savannah, GA.

NPSM: Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to the mental health space?

Annakie: As a father of five, I have seen the challenges that trauma and behavioral health issues can present, especially through the experiences of one of my sons. This personal journey inspired me to explore trauma and mental health more deeply. With a background in medical sales for over 12 years, I transitioned into the mental health field to make a meaningful difference. While mental health affects all communities, it remains a significant challenge in the Black community, though improvements have been made. Over the past five years, I have worked in the mental health sector, learning extensively about the brain’s role in conditions such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia.

NPSM: What inspired you to create TherapyConnected, and what challenges did you face in the early stages?

Annakie: Our goal was to create additional, accessible resources for those seeking mental health services. A key focus was to help remove the stigma around meeting with a therapist and provide support for individuals facing life challenges that may trigger mental health crises. Through my experience in the mental health field, I noticed a significant gap — the majority of services are driven by and catered to the Caucasian community. We aim to bridge this gap, as many other communities, especially the Black community, struggle to access the mental health resources they need. Currently, Black representation in the mental health field stands at only 5%, with just 25% of those in need seeking help. I want to emphasize that this is not just a Black or white issue; mental health challenges affect everyone. However, the cost of treatment remains a barrier, as insurance coverage is often limited, though improvements are being made. Greater awareness and exposure are essential to increasing the adoption of mental health services across all communities.

NPSM: How has your personal and professional journey influenced the vision and mission of TherapyConnected?

Annakie: As I mentioned earlier, being a father, husband, son, and friend, I’ve seen that we all struggle with some level of trauma—some more severe than others, depending on circumstances. When I began working as a Mental Health Outreach Executive, I gained a front-row seat to the many traumas people face and often suppress. Trauma, whether big or small, profoundly impacts our behavior. If left unaddressed, it can become a catalyst that undermines our growth. TherapyConnected’s vision is to offer an accessible path to mental health care, helping individuals confront and heal from these challenges.

NPSM: TherapyConnected emphasizes the merging of physical and mental health care. Why is this integration critical for holistic patient care, and how does your platform enhance collaboration between mental health professionals and medical providers?

Annakie: One critical aspect is gut health, which is vital because the brain requires proper nutrients to perform at its highest level.

Here are a few key nutrients that impact brain function:

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Glucose

Antioxidants (Vitamins C and E):

B Vitamins (B6, B12, and Folate):

Found in fish like salmon, these are essential for maintaining brain structure and function, particularly in areas related to cognition and memory.

The brain’s primary source of energy comes from carbohydrates, which are broken down into glucose.

These help protect brain cells from oxidative stress and are abundant in fruits and vegetables.

Critical for producing neurotransmitters and maintaining healthy brain function.

In addition to proper nutrition, exercise is another powerful tool to enhance mental clarity and cognitive function by improving blood flow to the brain.

Our platform, TherapyConnected, allows medical providers to seamlessly connect with therapists, sending patient information securely. The unique advantage is that therapists can communicate directly with providers through our HIPAA-compliant chat portal. While medication may not always be necessary, a holistic and functional approach to therapy can be incredibly therapeutic and effective in treatment. We offer a diverse group of therapists to meet the specific needs of the medical provider’s patients.

NPSM: As healthcare becomes more digital, platforms like TherapyConnected are transforming how care is delivered. What digital skills should NP students focus on now to stay ahead in this changing landscape?

Annakie: I believe it’s essential for NP students to learn AI tools and platforms that enhance efficiency, allowing for more focus on patient care. I see us as part of an innovative company driving the transformation of digital mental health therapy. The AI tool through TherapyConnected can streamline the process by recommending a list of therapists that best match patients’ needs with just a few prompts, making therapy more accessible and personalized

Kwane Annakie, VP of TherapyConnected, discussing mental health solutions in Savannah, GA.

TherapyConnected offers increased visibility and streamlined referral processes for licensed mental health professionals. In what ways does this differentiate your platform from other mental health service providers, and how does it empower professionals like psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs)?

TherapyConnected differentiates itself from other mental health service platforms in several key ways that benefit licensed mental health professionals, including psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs):

Increased Visibility

TherapyConnected enhances the visibility of licensed mental health professionals by offering a centralized platform where clients can easily discover and connect with providers. This reduces barriers such as geographical limitations, which traditionally hinder access to mental health care.

Streamlined Referral Processes Empowerment of PMHNPs

The platform simplifies referrals between professionals, making it easier for PMHNPs and other practitioners to connect clients to the appropriate level of care. This is crucial in mental health care, where timely and efficient referrals can significantly impact treatment outcomes.

NPSM: Where do you see the future of mental health care heading? What key challenges or advancements should healthcare providers, particularly NPs, anticipate in the coming years?

Annakie: In the future of mental health care, we’re likely to see a strong shift towards more integrated, tech-driven solutions. Digital tools like teletherapy, mental health apps, and AIbased monitoring systems are becoming increasingly common, offering more accessible and personalized care. The emphasis will be on patient-centered approaches, blending technology with traditional therapies to address mental health issues early on and more effectively.

For healthcare providers, particularly nurse practitioners (NPs), this means adapting to a more data-driven and tech-centric environment. NPs will need to stay ahead by expanding their knowledge of digital tools, telemedicine platforms, and remote patient monitoring systems. In addition to that, a greater focus on holistic care will require them to be well-versed in addressing not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being, ensuring a comprehensive approach to treatment.

Challenges will come in the form of balancing technology with human-centered care, managing the overwhelming amount of patient data generated by these systems, and navigating privacy concerns. Advancements in pharmacogenomics, which tailors medications based on individual genetic profiles, and

PMHNPs benefit from TherapyConnected by being able to manage patient care more effectively through collaborative features.

increasing mental health awareness in primary care settings will also shape how care is delivered.

Ultimately, NPs will need to anticipate changes in policy, reimbursement structures for digital and remote services, and be ready to lead in the movement towards a more accessible, techenabled future of mental health care.I hate to be biased but they should learn DMEconnected and TherapyConnected.

NPSM: Despite the growing number of mental health platforms, TherapyConnected entered the marketplace with a unique approach. Why was it important to introduce your platform at this moment, and what specific gaps or needs are you addressing for both patients and mental health professionals?

Annakie: Introducing TherapyConnected now addresses the growing need for scalable, accessible, and integrated mental health solutions, benefiting both patients and providers in an increasingly digital healthcare landscape.

First, TherapyConnected ensures a patientcentered approach. It integrates comprehensive care, addressing not just symptoms but the full spectrum of mental health challenges. This contrasts with other platforms that may offer more fragmented or limited services.

While many digital mental health platforms exist, TherapyConnected addresses specific gaps that others overlook, focusing on improving both patient outcomes and provider support.

NPSM: Your platform offers a wide array of benefits for professionals, including professional brand building and marketing support. Does TherapyConnected also include a prescribing component for PMHNPs? How do you see nurse practitioners utilizing the platform in their day-to-day practice?

Annakie: Our platform is one of the few that seamlessly enables Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) and medical teams to e-prescribe through our portal. Additionally, when a nurse practitioner (NP) joins our platform, we provide comprehensive support in marketing their services, both within the portal and on the

public-facing website, ensuring maximum visibility.I foresee daily growth in their practice as they benefit from increased exposure. The power will be in their hands to accept or reject patients based on set criteria.

NPSM: For students entering the workforce soon, what advice do you have for using platforms like TherapyConnected to build their network and start establishing themselves in the mental health or broader healthcare field?

Annakie: Mental health is an $80 billion industry—and it’s growing. This highlights the increasing number of individuals struggling with life challenges that are difficult to overcome alone. Students should take the opportunity to familiarize

themselves with the technology and resources that equip them to support more people in need. TherapyConnected is at the forefront of this expanding healthcare landscape, providing medical professionals, including nurse practitioners, with the tools they need to deliver effective and efficient care while enhancing the overall patient experience.

MONEY OUTLOOK

CASE STUDY: NAVIGATING THE TRANSITION FROM EMPLOYEE TO 1099 CONTRACTOR AS A NURSE PRACTITIONER

Have you ever considered breaking free from the constraints of traditional employment? For nurse practitioners, the transition to 1099 contract work can be an exciting prospect—promising autonomy, higher earnings, and control over your schedule. But as Emily Green discovered, this shift requires more than a career mindset; it demands financial acumen and preparation.

This case study delves into Emily’s journey, from her years as a W-2 employee to navigating the challenges of becoming an independent contractor. Her experience offers invaluable lessons for NPs who are contemplating a similar leap, equipping them with the tools to manage their new financial realities.

Background

Emily Green*, a seasoned NP, worked as a W-2 employee at a local healthcare facility for several years. Recently, she made the decision to transition to 1099 contract work, seeking more flexibility and control over her schedule. However, she was unaware of the significant tax implications and challenges that came with this shift. She needed expert guidance to navigate her new financial landscape and ensure long-term financial security.

Challenges

1. Loss of Employer-Sponsored Benefits

As a W-2 employee, Emily had employersponsored health insurance, disability insurance, life insurance, a 401(k) match,

and the benefit of having her employer withhold taxes. Upon becoming a 1099 contractor, she faced the challenge of paying for her own benefits and handling her tax obligations independently.

2. Self-Employment Tax

Emily was surprised by the selfemployment tax, which combines both the employee and employer portions of Social Security and Medicare taxes. This amounted to 15.3% on top of her federal and state income tax obligations.

3. Quarterly Estimated Tax Payments

Unlike W-2 employees, 1099 contractors must make quarterly estimated tax payments. Emily struggled to estimate her tax liability accurately and was concerned about the penalties for underpayment.

4. Deductions and Write-offs

Emily needed to learn how to maximize deductions, such as expenses for her home office, continuing education, professional dues, and travel for conferences. She realized she could lower her tax burden but wasn’t sure how to track and report these expenses properly.

Solutions

Implemented

1. Established a Separate Business Entity

With the help of Piece of Wealth Planning, Emily set up an S Corporation to save on self-employment taxes. By paying herself a reasonable salary and taking the rest as distributions, she was able to reduce the overall tax burden.

2. Tax Planning and Recordkeeping

Piece of Wealth Planning helped Emily implement a robust recordkeeping system to track her expenses and income. She utilized accounting software to ensure she captured every deductible expense, from office supplies to mileage. This helped her maximize her deductions and reduce taxable income.

3. Quarterly Tax Planning

To avoid penalties, Emily worked with her CPA at Piece of Wealth Planning to calculate her quarterly estimated tax payments based on her income and adjusted for deductible expenses. By setting aside 25-30% of her earnings, she was able to meet her tax obligations without stress.

Retirement Planning

Partnering with Piece of Wealth Planning, Emily discovered that as a

1099 contractor, she could maximize her retirement savings by contributing to a Solo 401(k) both as an employee and employer. This strategy helped her save for retirement while also reducing her taxable income for the year.

5. Insurance Planning

Through consulting with Piece of Wealth Planning, Emily secured affordable health, disability, and life insurance, ensuring she remained well-covered even after transitioning to a 1099 contractor role.

Outcome

Within a year of transitioning to 1099 work, Emily saw a significant improvement in her financial management and tax planning. By implementing effective strategies, she reduced her tax liability, saved adequately for quarterly payments, and avoided costly IRS penalties—resulting in thousands of dollars saved. Additionally, she gained control over her retirement planning and benefits, making her feel empowered as an independent contractor.
