PUBLISHER’S NOTE Two years ago, I faced a personal challenge that led me to hit pause on NP Student® Magazine. Navigating through that time made it difficult to keep up with the relentless pace of a publication and life itself. Today, I could not be more excited to relaunch.

This relaunch is not just about reviving a magazine; it is about reconnecting with a community that supports every NP student, offering the tools and resources my colleagues and I wished we had in NP school. After all, your community is the cornerstone of your journey. One might ask, how is a magazine a community? It serves as a pillar of encouragement, guidance, and support—a place where experiences, challenges, and successes are shared, reminding you that you are not alone.

This issue marks a significant milestone as we refocus on the essentials of being a scholar. Think back to your childhood when the excitement of going back to school filled the air. Remember the smell of new leather shoes and how your parents were overwhelmed with buying school supplies? Or those talks with your mom about lunch prep, ensuring you had everything you needed? Just as those preparations set you up for success in school, the essentials in this issue were curated to help you navigate your first semester.

As you move forward, I encourage you to ask yourself these three questions as you flip through the pages, read, and take notes: 1. What can I learn from this to enhance my growth as a person not just an NP student?

2. How can I apply these essentials to build a strong foundation in my studies and future practice?

3. Who in my community could benefit from what I have read?

As part of our commitment to be the go-to for NP students, we highlighted an extraordinary student to encourage you to embrace who you are—she truly represents the New Face of what academia should be. And of course, how can we keep you updated without covering what they don’t tell you in NP school? Additionally, we kicked off our partnership spotlight because we know that to meet our mission of giving you every aspect of your life, we must first bring together the best resources and support systems.

A message to NP students from the UAPRN President

A

s we usher in a new academic year, I want to extend a heartfelt wish to each of you. A new school year can bring excitement, anticipation, and a hint of nervousness. It is a time for fresh starts, new opportunities, and the ongoing journey toward a fulfilling and impactful career as nurse practitioners (NPs).

At the United Advanced Practice Registered Nurses of Georgia (UAPRN), we recognize and celebrate your commitment to becoming an NP, a role vital to the health and well-being of our communities.

This year, we proudly join NP Student® Magazine (NPSM) in their mission to keep you informed about every aspect of your life, both in and out of school. This partnership reflects our shared dedication to your holistic development, ensuring you have the resources and support needed to thrive both personally and professionally.

Given the rigor of your program, it’s important to recognize each milestone is significant and worth celebrating. Whether you are just starting or are preparing to graduate, your dedication and perseverance are commendable. To help you make the most of these resources and maintain your motivation, always remember your why—your personal reasons for choosing this path, whether it’s the desire to provide compassionate care, advocate for patients, or advance the field of nursing. However, even the strongest motivations can waver. To help you stay inspired and driven throughout the year, consider these tips: 1. Connect with Peers and Mentors: Building a network of fellow students, faculty, and experienced practitioners is essential for success in and out of school. These connections can provide advice, encouragement, and insights to enrich your learning experience. Regularly engage in study groups and mentorship programs. Attend networking events and professional gatherings to forge meaningful connections that will support your journey.

2. Set Realistic Goals: Use a planner or digital tool to set weekly and monthly goals. Break down your long-term goals into manageable steps. Track your progress and reward yourself for meeting milestones, such as completing a tough exam or mastering a new clinical skill.

3. Stay Curious: Embrace a mindset of lifelong learning. The healthcare field is constantly evolving, and staying curious will help you adapt and grow. Subscribe to NP Student®Magazine and scholarly journals, join professional organizations, and attend workshops or webinars to stay updated on innovation and best practices.

4. Take Care of Yourself: Balancing academics, clinical work, and life can be challenging, but taking time for self-care is crucial for maintaining your well-being and effectiveness as an NP. Incorporate self-care routines into your daily schedule, such as morning meditation, regular exercise, or setting aside time for hobbies. Always seek support when you feel overwhelmed.

5. Remember Your Support Systems: Faculty and staff play an instrumental role in your progress.

Regularly communicate with your professors and advisors. Attend office hours with prepared questions and updates on your progress. Express your gratitude through a thank-you note or a verbal acknowledgment.

6. Engage in Advocacy: Advocacy is the backbone of our profession, driving change in practice and policy. At UAPRN, we are at the forefront of legislative efforts to enhance access to care and remove barriers for APRNs in Georgia. As students, your involvement in these efforts is essential. Many programs integrate advocacy activities into their policy courses, providing a unique opportunity for you to engage. By participating, you can influence healthcare policy, improve patient outcomes, and lead transformative change within your communities.

7. Look Ahead: Take full advantage of the resources made available to you by your program. Engage actively in your coursework, seek out hands-on experiences. Join UAPRN or other professional organizations to expand your network and access additional resources. These experiences serve not only to enhance your skills but also to broaden your perspective and network.

In closing, I want to leave you with a quote that has always inspired me: “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” As you embark on this academic year, believe in your dreams and your ability to achieve them. The road ahead may be challenging, but it is also filled with incredible opportunities.

Thank you for your commitment to the nursing profession and the well-being of your future patients. Together, we will continue to advance the field and make a profound impact on this world.

THE NEW FACE OF ACADEMICS: ELIZABETH FRANCIS TALKS NP SCHOOL AND SELF-CARE

lizabeth Francis was instrumental in the production of NP Student® Magazine during the challenging times of the pandemic in 2021. It is our honor to showcase Elizabeth’s contributions and academic journey as we relaunch. Serving as the Editor-inChief Intern, she demonstrated exceptional leadership and editorial skills. Elizabeth communicated with contributors to gather content and ensure deadlines were met, assisted in content ideation and planning, and collaborated with the editorial team to brainstorm and plan upcoming content for the magazine. She supported the article review and editing process, ensuring adherence to Chicago Style guidelines, and conducted interviews with nurse practitioners and students. Her articles, based on these interviews and thorough research, consistently met NP Student®’s high standards.

Dr. Francis graduated with her Doctor of Nursing Practice with a concentration in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) from Duke University in May 2024.

Since then, she has published the outcomes of her quality improvement project, also known as her DNP scholarly project, titled Implementing a Screening Tool and Referral Process for Substance Use Disorders in the Emergency Department: A Quality Improvement Project, in the Journal of Emergency Nursing. Now working as a PMHNP, Dr. Francis continues to contribute significantly to the nursing profession.

In this exclusive interview, she shares her insights and offers advice on life, NP school, and publications.

1. Tell us about yourself.

I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri and moved to Springfield for college. During my time in nursing school I was elected as the President of my nursing class by my peers and chosen to be a student ambassador for the school by my professors. I graduated from Cox College with my BSN in 2019 and had been a nurse in the Emergency Department for about 5 years, while working per diem (PRN) in various inpatient and outpatient psychiatric facilities. I recently graduated with a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) specialty from

risk, occurrence, progression, and severity of pathological disease states across the lifespan that are seen in clinical practice. You must understand what is going on with your patient to assess, diagnose, and properly treat them.

My emergency care experience has provided me with extensive knowledge from caring for critically ill patients and performing life-saving measures in high-stress environments. I care for patients of all ages and acuity levels— patients with fractures, abdominal pain, psychiatric disorders, strokes, traumas, motor vehicle accidents, and everything in between.

Specifically in psychiatry, I think the ER experience has helped immensely. Having a

Personally, I am intentional about eating healthy and working out several times a week, whether that be walking, running, or getting outside with my dogs. I also take time to read every day, particularly crime fiction novels that are set in various parts of the world. These are two empirically supported interventions to help support physical and emotional well-being. I am also an enthusiastic fan of light therapy.

There is robust literature around light therapy being an effective non-pharmacologic tool to help treat seasonal affective disorder. The product I use was created by a psychiatrist-it is called the Brain MD Bright Light therapy lamp.

Duke University. Duke has been ranked the #1 PMHNP graduate program in the country for the last four consecutive years. I am on the board of the Kansas chapter of the American Psychiatric Nurse Association (APNA)and an American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) member. I am passionate about nursing education, policy, genetic implications and environmental influences of psychiatric illnesses, and abolishing the stigma around mental health disorders.

assess what is going on with the patient and treat them appropriately. Another important note to make is that many psychiatric patients have medical comorbidities. This has many implications in what medications to prescribe and avoid, how to operationalize treatment plans, and including connecting the patient to outside medical resources.

5. Would you advise students to work while in NP school?

If you feel you can balance work and school life, I suggest it. I am someone who avidly invests in the stock market and into retirement, so it is important to have streams of income to support these investments and day-to-day living expenses. I currently have 2 jobs as a

I have been asked this question a lot. I particularly like the nursing model of care—I like being at the bedside and in the room often with patients and the comprehensive approach nursing brings. I became a nurse because of the wide range of opportunities that comes with the degree. You can work in a clinic, a physician’s office, management, education, hospitals, long-term care—the opportunities are truly endless.

3. Do you feel your ER background helps with your training?

Yes, [my ER background] is essential in any specialty, particularly as a provider.

It has given me a deep understanding of how the body works at the biological level.

PMHNP program about 20 of us, so we have grown close as friends which has been an immense help in our journey through Duke’s rigorous curriculum. I do feel like the support from Duke’s faculty and tailored education sets the school apart from others. I know students in other programs that have a challenging time getting a hold of their professors, their exams are easily passable and generic. Duke does a fantastic job checking in with students, answering questions promptly, and tailoring the education to fit the needs of their students.

psychiatric nurse practitioner. One is my fulltime outpatient job that is in-person at a private psychiatric practice in Kansas, the other is a PRN contract position that is strictly telehealth care.

6. Is there anything that you do that enhances your learning experience?

One of my strengths is that I am a lifelong learner. I like researching and keeping up to date on the latest evidence, such as reading articles and listening to podcasts, especially those that cross-pollinate with my practice. For example, the other day I was reading literature on psychoanalysis and fMRI—how neuropsychoanalysis aims to link psychodynamic concepts to specific psychological functions localized in particular brain regions. My favorite platform is Carlat Psychiatry Report, which provides evidencebased, non-biased research that enhances the knowledge of clinicians in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and neurologic disorders.

9. Who is your favorite nurse influencer or instructor, and why?

I have had dynamic people influence my journey as a nurse and nurse practitioner.

The one person that first comes to mind that has influenced me the most is undoubtedly Dr. Sean Convoy. He is the director of Duke’s PMHNP program, has authored many chapters in nursing textbooks, and articles in peerreviewed journals. He has led multiple national, international, and regional podium presentations on topics like combat and operational stress first aid, understanding the military and their

families, treating depression, integrative mental healthcare, suicide risk assessment, and simulations in advanced practice nursing programs. Dr. Convoy consistently goes the extra mile to benefit his students. He creates rigorous coursework to help us become the best providers in the country, emphasizes the importance of metacognition, and teaches us that unconditional positive regard is one of the most profound gifts we can give our patients.

10. Final words or mantras you think every NP student should know?

I am a firm believer that arduous work is the catalyst to discovery. Research and learn outside your program’s requirements, network with professors and peers, and never stop asking questions. I find myself reading and studying a whole lot more now than when I was in undergraduate or graduate school, now that all the responsibility falls directly on my decisions and knowledge. I see too many people who just say “meh” and rest on their laurels. There is always something new to learn in healthcare as it is always evolving. Your patients expect and deserve your very best, after all.

7. What are your most valuable resources?

My most valuable resources would be the other students in my cohort, my colleagues, my professors, NEI, Carlat Psychiatry Report, and the Psych Education Forum. I derive a lot of my learning from these sources.

8. Did you feel well-supported by the faculty?

There are a few professors I have grown particularly close to in my program. In my DNP cohort there are only four of us, and in the

BOARD PREP: INSIDER TIPS FOR PROVEN SUCCESS

ike many of my students, I excelled in NP school but struggled with test anxiety during exams. My first attempt at taking the boards was unsuccessful, leading me through a period of denial and introspection as I tried to understand my missteps. During this time, I found inspiration in my experience teaching RN and NP students, who frequently praised my test-taking tactics. I realized these methods could benefit me as well and decided to apply them to my own preparation. These strategies have since become the foundation of my approach at The Nursing Studio, ensuring both exam success and clinical competence.

Today, as a leading Nursing and Nurse Practitioner Board Prep Owner and Instructor, I often receive the question, “When should I begin preparing for boards?” The simple answer is: you should start as soon as you begin your program.

Before you give that look, let me offer some context.

Board preparation should be a gradual process, as you are working to ensure success on your exam and in practice. As you navigate through multi-systems, diagnoses, and treatments and more; aim to learn, study, review, and implement each area effectively.

Success on boards begins with well-organized and comprehensive notes.

Building Your Tool Start with taking meticulous notes for your core classes. Use a designated notebook, binder, or electronic document. For example, in your Pathophysiology class, when covering the renal system, write detailed notes on anatomy, physiology, common diseases such as acute and chronic kidney disease, and their respective treatments. As you progress through your program, continue adding to and regularly reviewing your notes—daily or weekly— to reinforce your understanding of key concepts.

This evolving tool will grow with you from theory to application.

Using Your Tool At first, maintaining detailed and organized notes may seem insignificant given the amid demands of your program. However, as graduation approaches and your focus shifts to board preparation, you’ll appreciate having created your personalized review tool. Now, when you study, you can approach it with a fresh perspective, armed with a solid understanding of common concepts, saving you from stress and anxiety.

Avoiding Overwhelm Consider this retrospectively: approaching graduation without a systematic study plan. You have the core knowledge now and are ready to study, but you have no idea where to start. Suddenly, the reality of board preparation sets in. You spend countless hours navigating through old notes, attempting to create a study plan. Organizing and reviewing old material at the last minute creates double work and overwhelm. Instead, streamline your efforts by building your study tool from day one.

Take my advice: do it right the first time, gradually and consistently. As the saying goes, ‘How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.’ Start preparing from day one—you’ll thank yourself later.

Medical supplies are disposable items and usually used once or short term. DME is prescribed for long term use to help patients with their disease state or recovery from an illness or injury. Some medical supplies are cross-referenced between the two categories.

P

harmacogenomics (PGx) is a branch of medicine concerned with how our genome or genetic make-up affects how our bodies process & respond to medications. Pharmacogenomic tests (PGx testing) utilize a sample of your saliva, blood, or a cheek swab to get a snapshot of all your genes in an attempt to personalize your medication experience.

Though the two words are related, many people make the mistake of using the words genetics and genomics interchangeably. Genetics is the study of individual genes and how traits and characteristics are passed down between generations. Genomics, on the other hand, focuses on looking at all of our genes and creating a map of sorts.

This map can then be used to individualize therapy in a way that is revolutionary (pharmacogenomics).

Generally, specialized enzymes in the liver determine how your body will metabolize or process the drugs we consume. In future articles we will break down the science of this in more detail to make sure you can

have in depth conversations with your patients when they ask. These conversations will be extremely important since pharmacogenomics is not covered very well in NP school curriculums.

Benefits of PGx testing: Reduced adverse drug reactions.

Some people metabolize drugs too quickly which can increase their risk of being harmed by the drug. Sometimes processing medication too quickly can also mean that the medication will not be as effective.

This can be dangerous when taking medications that are known to be toxic or that are needed to keep you out of the hospital.

Genome specific dosing Leads to improved dose response via dose optimization. Knowing how your body metabolizes certain medications allows providers to choose a medication and a dose that better aligns with your clinical response.

Who can benefit from PGx testing?

PGx testing will be informative for patients who’s medication is not working as expected or if they are experiencing unwanted side effects. Patients who are on stable medication that is working as expected are less likely to find PGx data to be informative.

Pharmacogenomic testing is one example that shows us the potential of genomic science in addressing public health issues. As practitioners we should prepare for the PGx conversation to become more mainstream. As the discussion continues being popularized, we need to be prepared to have conversations with our patients, make therapeutic adjustments, & familiarize ourselves with reputable sources of PGx information. Healthcare in the future will be a personalized experience, with our genes being the catalyst of that transition.

In today’s fast-paced world, many fall into the trap of “chewicide,” consuming foods that harm rather than heal. The age-old adage, “You are what you eat,” holds profound truth, as our bodies regenerate cells based on the nutrients we provide through our diet. As nurse practitioner (NP) students, the demands of rigorous programs often leave little time for meal preparation. However, maintaining a nutritious diet is vital for sustaining energy levels and ensuring peak cognitive performance. Ultimately, this strengthens you to deliver patient care.

Inspired by the wisdom of ancient healers, here are five quick and nutrient-packed recipes that are perfect for the on-the-go lifestyle of NP students. The meals are made from sunkissed fruits and vegetables, and are loaded with essential nutrients for optimal health and a better you.

Here are my top five recipes to fuel your studies and keep you at your best:

Black Bean Garden Burger (pairs well with sweet potato fries)

Prep Time: 15 mins

INGREDIENTS

Total Time: 40 mins

Makes: serving size 4

PROCEDURE

■

2 tablespoons of olive oil

1.

Add black beans to a large mixing bowl. Gently pat beans dry with a paper towel. Mash beans until smooth and pasty.

■

2 tablespoons of minced garlic

2.

Add olive oil, onions, and minced garlic into a sauté pan at medium heat

■

1 (16oz) can of black beans (drained)

3.

Sauté 3 minutes then transfer to the bowl with the beans

4.

Add the paprika, salt, and pepper to the large bowl with the beans and mix until combined.

■

1 cup of brown rice

5.

■

1/2 cup of diced beats

Using a small bowl, mix the Hoisin, Teriyaki sauces, and molasses until thoroughly combined. Add 3 tablespoons of the mixture to the large bowl and set aside the rest for basting during cooking.

■

1/2 diced purple onion

6.

In a food processor, add oats and process until fine

■

¼ oat bran 1 tablespoon of hoisin sauce

7.

■

Add the oats to the large bowl with the beans, veggies, sauces, rice, beets, beet juice, and egg and mix everything until combined.

1 tablespoon of molasses

Using your hands, form the mixture into patties. Place patties on a plate (cover with foil) and freeze for 15-30 minutes.

1 tablespoon teriyaki sauce 1/2 tablespoon of smoked paprika

Add oil to a flat skillet over medium heat. Using a spatula, transfer patties to the skillet. Cook the patties for 5 minutes on each side. Baste with the remaining sauce and cook an additional minute each side.

10. With the spatula, place patties on a bun and top with your desired toppings and serve

INGREDIENTS ■

2 chicken breasts

2 tablespoons of blackened seasoning

2 tablespoons of olive oil

■

1 cup of ricotta cheese

■

1/2 cup of parmesan cheese

■

2 cups of spinach

■

½ cup of sundried tomatoes

■

¼ of fresh squeezed lemon juice

■

salt and pepper to taste

Blueberry & Banana Smoothie (A great treat and or meal replacement) Prep Time: 5 mins

PROCEDURE 1.

Add spinach, ricotta cheese, parmesan cheese, lemon juice, sundried tomatoes, salt and pepper to a small mixing bowl.

Stir ingredients well.

2.

Add blackening seasoning to both sides of the two chicken breasts.

3.

Slice chicken breast in half the long way, about three-fourths of the way through.

4.

Insert the stuffing ingredients into the chicken breasts.

5.

Add olive oil to Sautee pan at medium heat.

6.

Once oil heats up add chicken breasts and cook each side 3 – 5 mins to sear.

7.

Place chicken breasts onto a cooking sheet to place in the oven for 15 mins at 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

8.

With the spatula, place chicken breasts on plates and serve

ou don’t know what you don’t know until the moment arrives to step into your role as an NP. Although securing a job after graduation may seem straightforward, you may find yourself unprepared for the hidden challenges posed by collaborative agreements.

These essential legal documents define the relationship between you and your supervising physicians, allowing you to practice in reduced or restricted states and for a short duration in some full practice states. According to the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), they outline the scope of practice, required supervision, and any limitations, ensuring compliance with state regulations.

However, securing a supervising physician can be intimidating, particularly for new NPs. To help you navigate these complexities and understand emerging trends, we spoke with Amanda Guarniere, a Family Nurse Practitioner and the Director of Growth at Collaborating Docs. In our conversation, Amanda shares insights on the current state of collaborative agreements, the difficulties NPs face in securing them, and how Collaborating Docs is working to connect NPs with supervising physicians.

The Current Landscape Patrice Little: What are the biggest challenges NPs face in states with low NP-to-physician ratios?

Amanda Guarniere: Whenever a nurse practitioner is faced with finding their own collaborating physician, there can be a lot of challenges, especially in states that have low NP-to-physician ratios. Even if there is a physician associated with the practice where an NP works, that ratio can bottleneck the practice of NPs, and ultimately the access to care.

we were so happy to see this ratio change in Georgia! Georgia has been a particularly challenging state for NPs to find collaborating physicians because of this. California remains with a ratio of 4:1, and some states such as Florida have a 2:1 ratio for NPs working in a states, and while I’m not sure there is data that correlates health outcomes, these ratios can definitely influence the ability of nurse practitioners to be their own practice owners or work in settings that don’t have direct physician involvement.

Amanda Guarniere: The legal landscape of NP practice is ever changing, which is why we at Collaborating Docs work closely with our in-house legal team to stay up to date on the changes. There are states that are loosening restrictions on NP practice, and unfortunately states that are tightening them.

As a new NP, it’s recommended that you stay engaged with your profession by joining your local and national NP organizations, or even better, volunteer to be part of advocacy committees yourself!

We hope to continue to see states moving towards full practice authority, and until then, we’ll be here to help support NPs practicing to the full extent of their training in a compliant, supported way!

An example that comes to mind is that there are many therapy or counseling practices that are starting to integrate medication management by hiring PMHNPs, who are perfect for this role. Counseling practices don’t typically have physicians on staff or affiliated with the practice, so those PMHNPs must find their own collaborating physicians if they are not in a full practice authority state. In states where the ratio is low, this is creating a bottleneck of the much needed expansion of mental health services.

While many NPs are proponents of full practice authority for NPs (as are we at Collaborating Docs!), there are certainly some overlooked benefits to having a supportive, accessible physician on your team. The truth is, no one will ever know everything about everything, so having the option to “phone a friend” and talk through challenging cases and learn about new protocols and emerging evidence can benefit everyone!

We cover the malpractice insurance for the physician to save you the expense. We draft the legal agreements for you to save the expense. And if anything happens to the physician or they aren’t providing the support we expect, we’ll rematch you for free.

The process of working with us is simple first you meet with our NP onboarding team (all NPs themselves!) so they can learn about your needs, explain our service, and provide you a custom quote. Then, if you’re within about a month of needing the physician, we prepare an initial agreement for you. Once that’s signed, we get to work finding your perfect physician match (97% of the time, this happens within a week). Our legal team then sends you and the physician the collaborative agreement for signatures, and once signed, you start practicing under that agreement!

et’s face it, AI is here, has been integrated into our lives, and now students are trying to figure out how to incorporate this tool into their study plans. As someone at the cusp of Generation Z and the millennial generation, I believe in having a strong foundation first. This means knowing the ins and outs of a subject as an independent thinker. I feel that without a welldeveloped critical thinking ability, AI can lead students down a rabbit hole, causing confusion and a lack of control over their learning process. For this reason, I want to highlight how to use ChatGPT or Chatty, as a study companion and a first source for learning advanced practice care.

Using Chatty as a Study Companion AI, specifically ChatGPT, can be a powerful tool for enhancing your study routine. However, it’s essential to approach it strategically. Here are some sample prompts to get you started in core classes:

Anatomy and Physiology: ■

“Explain the structure and function of the cardiovascular system.”
