Here is an exclusive opportunity to be a front runner with very marketable genetics.

31H was the highest selling Female in Ladies of the West 2021 selling for $27,500. Her sire producing high selling bulls and females, John Wick 882E is in high demand still today selling semen for over $1,000 a straw just at the 50th Red Round Up sale. Her mother Meg 169Z recognisably one of the most classic composition, females in the Red Angus Breed, as being an above average embryo producer with pregnancy records. Meg 31H hasn’t stopped growing while raising an absolute brute of a bull calf. We made her work to see what her genetic potential was, and we are more than impressed. Without a high feeding program she is still as described; “a large outlined female with added size and performance, being clean made and feminine,” quoted by Wheeler’s Stock Farm. Duff HD 2046 was a high selling bull for $150,000 at record-setting 2022 Power Plus Bull and Female Sale. A breed changer like his dad Red Box but with a higher definition package, HD 2046 moves with his head high, flawlessly. Having a 45 Scrotal measurement, long level hip, sound structure and hoof, makes this first time in Canada semen valuable. Along with Meg 31H, this combination is a MUST HAVE!

4-H Alberta Ambassadors & Premier’s award recipient announced!

4-H Alberta is pleased to announce the Premier’s Award winner and new 4-H Alberta Ambassadors

During the 2022 Fall Senior Symposium Banquet on October 22, the incoming Ambassadors were announced along with the return of the Premier’s Award and its next recipient.

The Premier’s Award is the highest honour bestowed to a 4-H Alberta member. The award was donated personally by the Honourable E.C. Manning, Premier of Alberta, and was first presented to an outstanding 4-H member in 1964. The Premiers Award recipient is chosen from the pool of current 4-H Ambassadors and represents 4-H at a variety of events over the following year. The recipient will also meet with Alberta’s Premier and the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development.

Sophia Hoogland, a seventeenyear-old high school student from Lacombe County, was chosen to be the Premier’s Award Recipient due to her outstanding achievement as an Ambassador and her passion for growing 4-H.

“4-H has taught me so much over the years, but the one thing it has taught me most is that hard work does pay off, it might take a year or maybe 8, but one day if you keep working at it it will. So stay dedicated, be persistent, remain positive and dream big.” – Sophia Hoogland

For the last eight years, Sophia has been an active member of the Crestomere 4-H Multi Club in the sheep project, holding various executive positions. She has also been an avid participant in

various club, district, regional and provincial 4-H activities. Sophia has embraced being a Youth Leader at 4-H summer programs and has completed one year as a 4-H Alberta Ambassador.

Sohpia was also awarded the Ted Youck Outstanding Achievement and Leadership in 4-H Alberta Award. This new award was generously donated by long-time 4-H supporter, Ted Youck, and will be available to the Premier’s Award Winner for the next 10 years.

Sophia succeeds Amanda Hardman, 2019 Premier’s Award Recipient, and will officially accept her award from the Premier at a later date. The Premiers Award is selected on leadership, communication, passion for 4-H, participation as an Ambassador, application and personal interview.

“4-H Alberta has a strong relationship with the Government of Alberta and is pleased to continue the Premiers Award after a pause during the pandemic. 4-H Alberta is excited to work with Sophia and the 4-H Ambassadors to promote 4-H across Alberta.” –Susann Stone, 4-H Alberta Chief Program Delivery Officer.

In addition to the Premier’s Award recipient, nine new 4-H Alberta Ambassadors were announced and will be joining the current Ambassador Team:

Corbin N. – Wheatland County, Calgary Region

Hailey M. – Rockyview County, Calgary Region

Chance S. – Hanna, East Central Region

Vanessa H. – Consort, East Central Region

Courtney W. – St.Paul, Northeast Region

Cooper M. – Edgerton, Northeast Region

Zachary J. – Sexsmith, Peace Region

Charlotte C. – Lacombe, West Central Region

Grace T. – Hay Lakes, West Central Region

4-H Alberta Ambassadors are enthusiastic Senior Members that are driven to grow 4-H in Alberta through sharing their 4-H experiences, developing opportunities for the 4-H community, and representing youth. 4-H Ambassadors will support 4-H in their region and across the province.

Senior Members from across Alberta can apply to be an Ambassador for their region through the online application and virtual interview process, available starting the beginning of September. There is the opportunity for two Ambassadors per region to be selected for a twoyear term, as long as there are applicants from each region.

To learn more about the Ambassador role and to contact the Ambassadors in your region,

you can visit the Ambassador page on the website: https:// www.4hab.com/ambassadors/

Congratulations to Sophia and the new additions to the Ambassador team for 2022!

The Fall Senior Symposium and Ambassador Program lead Madeleine Luft, 4-H Alberta Program Coordinator, says: “The interview panel was blown away by the quality of applicants during the personal interviews for both the Ambassadors and Premier’s Award. It was fantastic to see such a great group of youth receive these opportunities. We are also very happy with the outcome of the Fall Senior Symposium program and want to th

The Fall Senior Symposium held October 21-23, 2022 in St. Albert was attended by 90 Senior Members from across the province. At the program, Members participated in handson workshops as they learned about career development, money management and personal growth.

There are shear uncertainties in the lamb market

“Uncertainty is inherent in agricultural markets,” says Ann Boyda, provincial livestock market analyst with the Alberta government. “Whether it is related to weather, prices, government policies, or the global markets, all can impact farm income. The lamb and sheep sector faces its fair share of risks in business.”

Globally, production has expanded. According to the International Wool Textile Organization, world sheep numbers rose to a record 1.266 billion head in 2021. This represents a 16.9% increase since 1995 and a 0.3% increase over 2020. World ovine meat output in 2021 reached 16.4 million tonnes, up 1.8% year on year.

The 2022 production of sheepmeat is forecast to increase by 1.4% to 361 million tonnes (carcass weight equivalent). This is slower than the 4.5% increase in 2021 and driven by output in China and increases in Brazil, Australia and Vietnam. Production is forecast to decrease in the European Union, United States, Canada, Iran and Argentina.

International meat prices trended upward in 2021, reflecting higher demand due to the economic recovery, and higher costs associated with marketing and transport. However, rising feed costs put pressure on sectoral profitability. Since October 2021, global ovine prices have declined.

“Nominal sheepmeat prices are expected to remain low due partly to weaker import demand from China and the Middle East, combined with increasingly high lamb production in Australia. Sheepmeat is still considered a niche market in some regions

of the world and a premium component in some diets of others. Where traditionally consumed, it may have long-term slow decline,” says Boyda.

The U.S. has experienced comparable trends. Sheep and lambs inventory in the U.S. on January 1, 2022 totaled 5.07 million head, down 2% from 2021.

Contributing to lower slaughter levels, lambs on feed showed significantly higher volumes suggesting a backlog in live lambs. More recently, this backlog is easing. The Livestock Marketing Information Center (LMIC) is forecasting sheep and lamb slaughter to be down 4.7% and 1.4% respectively for the third and fourth quarters of 2022. This would result in a 6.6% decline in annual slaughter to just over 2.6 million head.

Prices as shown by the Colorado, South Dakota and Texas markets also illustrate the high volatility. Since March 2022, there has been a significant downturn in the lamb market.

“Traditionally, consumers are price sensitive regarding lamb. With increases in inflation, consumers may be more cautious with discretionary spending. According to LMIC, per capita consumption is expected to be 1.29 lbs in 2022, and forecast to be 1.27 and 1.18 lbs in 2023 and 2024, respectively.”

Canada is not insulated from global trends. The national herd decreased by nearly 14% to 1.077 million head since 2002. The Western provinces represent nearly 45% of the national herd, and based on July 1, 2022 inventory estimates, Alberta represents 21%

of the total national inventory, second to Ontario at 30% and equivalent to Quebec.

Since January 2018, lamb prices increased by 31.7%; however, feed costs, which represent between 40% and 60% of total production costs, have increased at a greater rate. Feed barley prices increased by 123.7% and good hay increased by 47.2% over the same period.

“Lamb producers face a potential future of declining demand,

primarily due to macroeconomic conditions. Consumption is low compared to other meats and global pressures like the RussiaUkraine conflict contribute more uncertainty to input costs,” explains Boyda. “Managing through these uncertain times will require having a close eye on input costs, tapping into business risk management programs and looking at options for contingency, such as AgriInvest, or diversification.”

COWS WILL

With independent nutrition consultant BARRY YAREMCIO

Oat Growers Commission is accepting nominations for directors

Cattle are inquisitive creatures. If they encounter something unusual or different, they will investigate. Behaviors of smelling and tasting are what they do to figure out what the material is. One product they will consume is fertilizer. A spill on pasture or hay land, or from a leaking granary can kill.

When animals find fertilizer lying on the ground, they will consume large amounts in a short period of time. For example, when urea is consumed, it is broken down into ammonia. The excess ammonia not used to form amino acids or detoxified in the liver, can cause Bovine Bonkers which can cause death in a short period of time. Consumption of 250 grams of urea can cause death.

In consultation with a livestock nutritionist, feed grade urea, (46-0-0) fertilizer can be included in rations. When combined with carbohydrate, keto acids are produced which are then converted into amino acids. When amounts added to a ration are controlled and mixed into silage as part of a total mixed ration or into a grain mix; problems are rare.

Ammonium nitrate (34-0-0) is broken down in the rumen. In two steps, the nitrate is converted to nitrite and then to ammonia. Accumulation of nitrite in the rumen and bloodstream can cause nitrate poisoning. The blood cannot release carbon dioxide in the lungs therefore reducing oxygen carrying capacity. It is commonly called nitrate poisoning when in fact, it is the nitrite form that causes the problem. Consumption of 1,100 grams of ammonium nitrate can cause death.

Sulfur containing fertilizer such as ammonium sulfate (21-0-0-24) or elemental sulfur (0-0-0-90) is broken down in the rumen and incorporated into sulfur containing amino acids or excreted in the urine. Excess intake causes hydrogen sulfide to form. One theory is that hydrogen sulfide accumulates at the top of the rumen and crosses the rumen wall into the lungs. This interferes with oxygen transport in the blood and can cause polio. The second theory is that the sulfur reduces rumen pH and in turn this reduces the thiamine producing bacteria and the amount of thiamine available to the brain. In both cases, polio is a concern. Consumption of 40 grams of ammonium sulfate can cause death.

Care is needed when spreading fertilizer on pastures, stubble land, or areas where cattle have access. Spills, or fertilizer prills laying on the top of the soil can cause health issues or death in cattle.

Vigilance key as wildfire season ends

Albertans’ shared sense of responsibility for our forests has decreased the percentage of human caused wildfires in 2022, but there is still work to do.

While Oct.31 marked the end of the legislated wildfire season in Alberta, it is essential that people remain alert and responsive to conditions. The recent warm, dry weather was enjoyed by many across the province, but prompts a reminder to everyone that wildfires can start and spread at any time of year.

In the 2022 wildfire season, 56 per cent of wildfires were caused by human activity, around 38 per cent were caused by lightning and roughly six per cent are still under investigation.

“Diligence this summer resulted in a more than 10 per cent decrease in human-caused wildfires and we recorded fewer wildfires than the previous year overall. Wildfire staff work tirelessly keeping our forests safe and it’s great to see that their efforts have been supported by the public’s responsible behaviour. We’re not out of the woods yet, though – warm, dry fall conditions in some parts of the province mean that it’s still important for folks to stay alert to risks. Preventing wildfire is the duty of all Albertans,” said Todd Loewen, Minister of Forestry, Parks and Tourism

When enjoying the province’s beautiful forests outside of wildfire season, Albertans should remain cautious. Fall may be in the air, but wildfires can still occur. Until there is sufficient moisture on the ground, the threat of wildfire remains. Alberta Wildfire has resources strategically placed across the province that are ready to respond.

In 2022, a total of 1,254 wildfires burned about 153,124 hectares. This is compared with the five-year average (2017-2021) of 1,110 wildfires burning more than 190,000 hectares.

Thanks to manageable conditions here in Alberta, we were able to aid firefighting efforts in British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alaska and Washington, and supported Parks Canada and the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre. We did this by sending 90 firefighters, overhead staff and aircraft to partner agencies in need.

Alberta Wildfire staff regularly explore and test new developments in wildfire prevention, suppression, mitigation and smoke detection to assess how adopting technology can support a rapid response.

This year, Alberta Wildfire tested technology that predicts and detects wildfires, and helps improve communication between staff. Each of these technologies assists with response planning, staff deployment and timely public communications. The results from the 2022 season will determine how these technologies might benefit the province’s efforts to fight wildfires.

Cold impacts our animals too

With the second cold wave of the season upon us, two Fort St. Johnbased veterinarians are reminding us to consider the cold when it comes to our pets and livestock.

“Definitely, one of the things we want to consider is their water source,” said Dr. Justin Sewell with Rivers Animal Hospital, if the pet is outdoors more so than indoors.

“Make sure you have a heated water source or they have access to inside where they can drink water.”

Another concern is frostbite.

“Typically, we see it on the tips of the ears, their tails, and the foot pads. Generally, though, if a dog wants to go outside and you’re outside for a short time with them, it’s not a concern,” Sewell described.

“I think where we see the trouble is when you let your pet outside, forget you let it outside, and they want back in. If they can regulate themselves, scratch at the door, and you let them back in, they’re probably not getting frostbite.”

“It usually doesn’t happen when you’re aware of the animal. It can happen when you forget.”

Snow on the ground also brings with it its own problems, he added.

“We start to have that melt/ thaw/moisture thing. There’s a lot of ice, like on a walking surface, and we see a lot of cut foot pads, torn dewclaws, or ice on top of

bed of snow, we’ll definitely see lacerations from that.”

The care of livestock is just as significant in the cold.

“Probably the biggest things are them having options to get out of the weather, to some degree. The winds, more than anything, whether that’s shelters, barns, tree stands…something that will help break the winds,” said Dr. Kim Jones with the North Peace Veterinary Clinic.

“Having good nutrition is important, just so they’re in a good body condition but also helps them prepare their winter coat. With snow on the ground, access to water is important, that there are open water sources so they function rapidly on their digestive side, especially when we’re talking about ruminants like cattle, goats, and sheep. Their guts are their furnaces, essentially. So, they need to have food in there to help keep them warm and regulated that way.”

Jones said older horses or horses who came from warmer climates might also need an insulating blanket to help them cope with the cold.

“Maybe, they haven’t developed a good hair coat, so modifications in that respect. Even adding layers, removing layers as temperatures fluctuate.”

As always, if you feel an animal in your care is in distress, the first call should be to a licensed vet; many offering 24/7/365 access for emergencies.

Consider short-term in-field manure storage

“Using temporary storage sites gives operations the flexibility to stage manure for future manure application,” says Deanne Madsen, sustainable agriculture resource specialist with the Alberta government. “While spring application may be ideal for annual crops, it is not always achievable due to the already busy season, road restrictions, wet soils or equipment availability.”

Sometimes harvest delays push back fall activities, preventing timely manure application. Other times of the year present a greater risk for manure application and nutrient loss than others.

The least optimal time for manure application is on frozen or snow-covered ground. Risk of nutrient loss is much greater as infiltration is limited and plants are not growing to use applied nutrients.

“The flexibility of establishing short-term manure storage sites can be an indispensable tool to stage manure for future application and avoid application when the risk of nutrient loss is greatest. To minimize any potential environmental impacts,

operators may want to have a plan in place to identify and use short-term in-field storage sites, and consider permanent manure storages sooner than later.”

For livestock operators with outdoor facilities, using shortterm sites can save time and money during clean out. Shortterm manure storages allow for timely cleaning of permanent manure storages, livestock pens or corrals. Operations can clean out manure when timing is convenient or when conditions for removal minimize damage to the pen floor liner and before spring road bans are in effect. These sites can also function as composting sites reducing the volume of manure to haul, thereby reducing manure transport costs.

“Short-term manure storage sites can be used to reduce road damage and further reduce manure application costs by using large end dump trucks to move manure to the field to store over the short term before reloading and spreading,” points out Madsen.

Positioning the manure piles down the centre of the field allows

the spreaders to operate from the storage pile out to the field edge and back. The spreaders do not leave the field and are not empty for long, helping increase applicator efficiency. The time is spent spreading manure, not travelling empty and wasting costly fuel. Managing manure this way also reduces road traffic, minimizing road maintenance costs and nuisances for nearby neighbours.

“When selecting a location for short-term manure storage, select a site that will not cause concerns for neighbours or the community. Avoid placing it close to public gathering places like churches and community halls, as well as neighbouring residences. If that is not possible, use setbacks to reduce potential conflict.”

Also consider sites that will not cause traffic or visibility issues by interfering with sight lines at road intersections and potentially causing accidents. Following good neighbour practices will help build good will in the community and a positive profile for the industry.

Short-term storage is a practice which is regulated

by the Agricultural Operation Practices Act (AOPA). The Natural Resources Conservation Board (NRCB) can address sites that are too close to public gathering places if it is causing an inappropriate disturbance. The act allows the NRCB to require at least a 150-metre setback from short-term manure storage sites and neighbouring homes.

According to the act, operators are also responsible to ensure any runoff from short-term manure storage does not create a risk to the environment or leave the property. To avoid these issues, evaluate the surface water flow of the site and select a location that if the conditions are wet you can still access with equipment, does not flood, and retains runoff in the field

For more information, call 310-FARM (3276), email aginfocentre@gov.ab.ca or contact the nearest NRCB field office.

$20 million fertilizer plant for DeBolt area

Replenish Nutrients to build a regenerative fertilizer plant on site of DeBolt Ag

The Peace Country will soon be home to a fertilizer plant that will produce a ground breaking new fertilizer. Alberta’s Replenish Nutrients employs a zero-waste, low-emission manufacturing process using recycled organic matter and elemental mineral sources resulting in a lowsalt product that significantly improves soil health. . This new regenerative fertilizer, has been piloted at Replenish Nutrients’ facility in Beiseker, Alberta and they are now in the process of scaling up with a new $20 million facility located just east of DeBolt.

This innovation comes at a pivotal time for Canada’s agriculture industry. Soil health is always a key concern for farmers and climate change top-of-mind for agricultural producers, the public, and policymakers. A full 25 per cent of global GHG emissions come from the agriculture sector, half of which come from traditional synthetic fertilizers. The spotlight is on agriculture as the next frontier for climate

action, so providing farmers with a product that reduces emissions while creating healthier soil is a win for the climate and for farmers looking to feed a hungry planet. The new DeBolt facility alone will result in an annual GHG reduction or avoidance of 132,000 Co2e.

“Regenerative fertilizer is a major step forward for agriculture, reducing emissions, maintaining yields, and boosting soil health.” said Replenish Nutrients founder Neil Wiens. “We are proud to grow our company right here in Alberta and help bring more investment and economic activity back to the Peace County.”

The new facility will create 130 construction jobs in the region and 25 permanent positions once construction has been completed, which is expected by the end of 2023.

For more information on the construction project, or regenerative fertilization, please contact Neil Wiens at Replenish Nutrients at (403) 803-2549 or email him at neil.wiens@ replenishnutrients.com.

Agricultural Society Innovation Award accepting applications

“The Agricultural Society Innovation Award recognizes agricultural societies for their innovation, resilience and commitment to their communities,” says Susan Lacombe, program coordinatorwith the Alberta government. “This award allows us to work together to champion and celebrate the significant contributions that agricultural societies make, while inspiring others to take action.”

The program recognized 2 agricultural societies in 2021, which made tremendous impacts on their communities – the Calmar and District Agricultural Society and the Rocky Mountain House Agricultural Society.

The Calmar and District Agricultural Society and curling club were gifted a piece of land to farm. Using donated materials, machinery, seed, fertilizer, crop insurance and a host of volunteers, profits from the harvest were distributed to the curling club and other Leduc County charities and organizations. This had a tremendous impact on the local community.

The Rocky Mountain House Agricultural Society was recognized for developing a series of agriculture education videos for grade 4 students. These videos featured local farms and producers covering a wide range of topics from farm safety, equine safety and dairy, beef and sheep production, to information on 4-H steers. These videos are also available to the public, and can be incorporated into future inperson educational programming.

A selection panel made up of individuals representing agricultural societies will evaluate the 2022 applications based on a ranking system that includes creativity, community impact, challenge overcome and overall impression.

“Up to 3 agricultural societies will be recognized at the upcoming Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies annual convention on February 3, 2023. Innovations should be something that is new to the agricultural society, and demonstrate how the society continued to positively impact community engagement, recovery and reopening during the last year.”

The winners will each receive a banner suitable for display in their area or community hall to mark this achievement, along with a formal certificate of recognition. Applications for the 2022 award are now available. The deadline to apply is November 30, 2022.

“Agricultural societies matter and this is one small way for us to say thank you for the critical work they do in building a stronger Alberta,” says Lacombe.

Smoky Hemp expects to be producing and processing hemp in Northern Alberta in 2023

hurd and the “left-over” dust.

A handful of farmers and local business owners have combined forces and launched Smoky Hemp Decortication Ltd. (SHDL) in northern Alberta.

Hemp is the second-fastestgrowing plant on earth after bamboo. Smoky Hemp is combining with the power of Peace Region agriculture. The Peace is a major agricultural region in Alberta with over three million farming acres within 150 km of the Decortication Facility in Donnelly.

“SHDL will produce some of the highest quality fibre in North America and we believe it will catalyze development of a hemp value added cluster,” says Avis Gagne, CEO of SHDL.

“We are dedicated to becoming a globally recognized leader in the hemp fibre industry,” adds Diane Chiasson, SHDL Director of Sales and Marketing.

In full production, Smoky Hemp’s state of the art equipment will process 3 tonnes per hour of hemp straw into three products, the outer bast fibres, the inner

Hemp is a cheaper alternative for construction. Hemp-based material can be used to replace wood and has much lower manufacturing costs. The hemp material is more robust, lighter, and more durable than wood.

Hemp clothing is more durable and more cost efficient than cotton clothing. Hemp fibre is ten times stronger than cotton, therefore, lasts much longer. Also, growing cotton requires pesticide use, so substituting hemp for cotton would reduce the economic and environmental impact of pesticides. The Peace Region is one of the best hemp growing areas on Earth because of our long summer days, hemp plants grow tall and produce more fibre in the Peace than any other area of Alberta.

Smoky Hemp Decortication Ltd. is a for profit corporation located in the Smoky River Region of Alberta.

If you are interested in investing, growing hemp or developing a partnership with SHDL, please contact them for more details. Visit their website for more information and contact info. https://www. smokyhempdecortication.com/

Not a bad year for cowboy Jake Gardner

Cowboys and cowgirls competing on the rodeo circuit are always striving to be better – Fort St. John’s Jake Gardner is no exception to the rule.

In general terms, though, the 26-year-old is pretty happy with the 2022 season, although he admitted he had hoped for a better result at the recent Canadian Finals Rodeo in Red Deer.

“You know, I’m happy with the way my year ended, but I’m definitely not happy that I’m not in the number one spot,” said Gardner Sunday.

“It’s a competitive sport, so the work is going to start immediately after. It just means I’m going to work harder to get to that number one spot next year.”

Gardner, though, was chosen as the recipient of this year’s Kenny McLean Award named after a famous saddle bronc rider from the South Okanagan who passed away while

waiting to compete at a rodeo in Taber, Alta. in 2002.

“It’s an award for competing at both rough stock and timed events. Kenny was probably one of the most decorated cowboys. He was a legend and to win an award named after him is great.”

On Nov. 11-12, Gardner took part in another high-profile event, the PBR Canada National Finals in Edmonton, where he rode four different bulls.

He received a no score in the first round against Smoke Bomb.

“Good little bull, kind of like a firecracker. I tried my hardest but I didn’t quite get the whistle and it is what it is,” said Gardner.

He was able to rebound with scores of 81 and 86 on Alberta Springs and Superstition in the next two go-rounds.

“Been on Alberta Springs previously. It was kind of a rough start. He kinda fell down at the start, rode him out a bit, and got an 81 which gave me a good pick for the third round. Superstition: I watched my buddy, Wyatt Gleason, ride him for 90 points earlier in the season, so I got to pick him and it worked out alright.”

Gardner, however, would be bucked off in the championship go-round by Catfish.

“Been on him before. Kinda tricky [bull]…gets a lot of people on the ground. He was just better than me that day. Wish I could have it back.”

With his aggregate score of 167, Gardner finished the two-day event in sixth place.

He’ll return back to the Peace Country in a couple of weeks for another PBR-sponsored event Nov. 25 at the Ovintiv Events Centre in Dawson Creek.
