Food and beverage producers and processers in the province can now apply for the next round of Buy BC funding to help make it easier for British Columbians to identify and choose products that are made in B.C. “The Buy BC program is helping business all over the province grow awareness, increase sales and reach new markets within B.C.,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries. “British Columbians know when they see the Buy BC logo, they can trust the high-quality product is from a local B.C. community and they are supporting their neighbour and the people dedicated to supplying local food and beverages to consumers in B.C.” Buy BC is a provincewide marketing program focused on building greater consumer awareness, and demand and sales of local agriculture, food and beverage products. It is supported by several components, including Buy BC logo licensing, cost-shared funding for industry-led Buy BC marketing activities, retail partnerships, promotional activities and events, and a comprehensive marketing campaign.

Since the program was relaunched in 2018: more than 240 industry-led marketing projects have received Buy BC cost-shared funding; and more than 625 B.C. companies have been licensed to use the Buy BC logo.

One Buy BC funding recipient is Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry in Chilliwack, which offers specialty poultry to customers around the province, such as ready-to-eat duck products, goose, squab, Loong Kong chicken and chicken raised without the use of antibiotics. The funding is helping launch a marketing campaign with print, broadcast, digital ads and a variety of in-store marketing materials intended to increase sales and attract new customers in-store and through

their online store.

“The Buy BC program allows our marketing ideas to go further than if we were funding them through our annual budget alone,” said Joe Falk, general manager, Fraser Valley Specialty Poultry. “It enables us to advertise with larger media outlets, to secure the local talent we need to get our message across, and to reach customers within our own province who are as passionate about local food as we are. The recognizability of the Buy BC logo gives credence to our work and what we stand for.”

Delta’s BCfresh also received Buy BC funding, which it used to launch and market its new BCfresh Berries brand this summer.

The company also used the funding for digital and print ads promoting its Warba potatoes this past spring and is currently promoting its BCfresh Field to Fork campaign that highlights local farms and B.C.’s fall harvest.

“The Buy BC program continues to be an important tool to help educate customers about where their food is grown,” said Brian Faulkner, vice-president of business development and marketing, BCfresh. “We prominently display the logo on many of our retail packages and proudly seal every bag with a BCfresh/Buy BC Kwik Lok closure so consumers can quickly see they are buying something grown in B.C. on local family farms.”

The Buy BC Partnership Program is providing $2 million this year to help eligible applicants with their marketing efforts using the Buy BC logo on their products or promotional materials to help consumers easily identify their product as a B.C. product.

Businesses can apply for Buy BC funding from Oct. 26 until Nov. 18, 2021. The Province’s Buy BC Partnership Program is delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation of British Columbia.

Local riders bounce back in CFR After a tough first round at the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Red Deer, Stephen Culling, Lisa Zachoda, and Tyrel Roberts all bounced back in round two on November 4.

Culling timed out in round one, but got his steer down in 4.3 seconds on Thursday, good for second place that round and $6,960. He’s currently eighth in the aggregate, with round three going tonight at 6 p.m. local time.

Zachoda, originally from Fort St. John, won the second round of barrel racing, with a time of 14.163. With a fifth place finish in round Stephen Culling, top right, receives his jacket and number at the Canadian Finals Rodeo, one, Zachoda sits third in the aggregate, with along with the rest of the steer wrestlers in contention, in Red Deer on November 3, 2021. $10,320 in earnings at the CFR so far.

Charlie Lake’s Roberts, competing in novice saddle bronc, was second on Thursday with a score of 75.75, after being bucked off in round one. He’s earned $680 in Red Deer so far.

Jake Watson of Hudson’s Hope was the lone rider of the four to have a tough go in round two. Watson was bucked off in saddle bronc on Thursday, after finishing sixth in round one.

Crop Year-to-Date Primary Elevator Shipments to October 24, 2021

‘There are several management considerations to make when deciding where and how to best utilize available manure and compost resources,’ says Trevor Wallace, nutrient management specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

Considering the right nutrient source (one of the 4Rs of nutrient stewardship) to use in a specific situation will optimize manure or compost use efficiency.

‘If your farm only produces one type of manure, you don’t have the option of selecting different sources for different situations, but you can target the manure source you have to a situation that provides the greatest return from that manure. If you have access to multiple types of manure and compost, you have the opportunity to target the various sources to get the greatest benefit. To decide where best to utilize available sources of manure or compost, you need to know the nutrient contents and characteristics of the various manures or composts, the soil characteristics of the different fields, and planned crop requirements.’

Manure nutrient composition varies widely due to factors such as different animal species, bedding and feeding practices, types of manure (solid or liquid), methods of handling, and storage (i.e. fresh, stockpiled, composted, or treated). Generally speaking, poultry litter and liquid manure can be high in readily available (inorganic) nitrogen, while solid manure and compost are high in organic nitrogen, which requires microbial action to make the nitrogen available to crops.

Manure treatment, such as composting or solid-liquid separation, changes manure nutrient dynamics, making it more suited for some situations than others. Composting, for example, results in dramatic losses of dry matter and water. The process results

in higher concentrations of nutrients in the mature compost. Some of the plant-available nitrogen is lost to the atmosphere and more of the total remaining nitrogen is transformed into an organic form, which requires microbial action to make the nitrogen available to crops.

This makes compost a better source for longterm nutrient release.

‘Using book values from the Manure Characteristics and Land Base Code can help you to estimate the nutrient content and characteristics of different manure types and target where and how to take advantage of those nutrients,’ explains Wallace. ‘However, manure or compost nutrient composition varies widely among farms, livestock species, feeding practices, bedding practices, manure types, storage management, environmental conditions, and with time. So getting nutrient contents from on-farm sampling as close as possible to the time of application is best (see sampling techniques for liquid and solid manure for analysis).’

Due to the inherent variability of manure, a single manure sample is unlikely to provide an accurate estimate of the nutrients throughout the pump out of a liquid manure storage structure or from a large stockpile of solid manure. Many samples, properly collected over several years, will provide a better picture of the typical nutrient concentrations in the manure.

‘Once you know the amount and form of nutrients available in your manure or compost sources, you can target the manure to fields, crops, or within a rotation to take advantage of those different characteristics, getting a greater benefit, higher value from those sources.’

For example: Applying compost or solid manure to fields with low soil organic matter levels will add organic material and improve soil structure more so than applying to fields with high soil organic matter levels.

Applying poultry litter or liquid manure to fields or crops that require high levels of readily plant-available nitrogen right away may result in better crop yields than applying sources with high organic nitrogen which requires microbial transformation to be plant available.

Using solid manure or compost in situations when adding late-season nitrogen can boost crop protein levels, as these sources are high in organic forms of nutrients that come available over time through microbial conversion.

Targeting manure sources and applying in the rotation can maximize the value of the applied manure by looking at the nutrient need/use over time. Targeting allows for nutrient application to match when and what the various crops need.

In addition, field conditions may make a

field more suitable for one source of manure or compost than another. Alberta’s manure management legislation, the Agricultural Operation Practices Act, requires surface applied manure to be incorporated within 48 hours unless the manure is applied to direct seeded land or onto forages. In situations where erosion is an issue and incorporation is not required, operations may choose to apply solid manure to reduce the short-term risk of soil erosion. In situations where erosion may be an issue, and incorporation is required, producers may not want to apply manure at all to avoid soil disturbance.

‘Knowing the nutrient contents of various manure or compost sources, soil properties of the receiving fields, and crop nutrient needs will help you select the right source for the right field to optimize nutrient use, avoid nutrient loss and offset fertilizer cost,’ says Wallace.

Rodenticides are mouse and rat poisons.

Most rodenticides contain anticoagulants that can affect the clotting of the blood in the animal or bird that ingests it. There are other types of rodenticides, that I will briefly discuss in this article.

Mouse and rat poison typically come in the form of pellets, bars or sometimes granules which can accidentally be ingested by our pets. Poisoning is most common in younger dogs who are more likely to eat various things they aren’t supposed to but can occur in any animal that eats the poison. Although it is possible for a pet to ingest enough poison by eating mice or other rodents that have been poisoned with a rodenticide, this is very rare as they would have to eat quite a large number of rodents in order to ingest a toxic dose of the poison. When an animal eats the poison, the anticoagulant in the rodenticide interferes with the animal’s vitamin K1 status. Vitamin K is very important and is used by several clotting factors in the body and if there isn’t enough Vitamin K these clotting factors can’t work properly and blood clots can no longer form to stop bleeding. It can take several days between when the poison is ingested and when an animal starts to show symptoms.

Because the body can no longer form blood clots, even small degrees of trauma, bumps or jostles can result in bleeding. Often this bleeding can be internal and the owner won’t see outward signs of bloodloss. Symptoms seen by owners include bruising of the skin, nose bleeds, blood in the urine or stool, coughing, decreased appetite or weakness.

Death can occur from blood loss.

These anticoagulant types of poisons can be stored in the liver of the animal that ingests them and cause toxicity for quite long periods of time. There are different generations of anticoagulants and for each of these, the period of time the poison can persist and cause problems in the animal is different.

A less common but very serious type of mouse or rat poison contains and ingredient called bromethalin. This poison affects the nervous system and can cause swelling of the brain and fluid buildup in the spinal cord leading to seizures and death. Unfortunately it can be very difficult to treat an animal that

has ingested this poison.

If a pet ingests mouse or rat poison, it is very important for the vet to know what the ingredient is in the poison. Ideally if you realize your pet has ingested poison, they should be taken to a veterinarian as soon as possible for treatment. If ingestion is recent, vomiting will be induced. Sometimes medication can also be administered by mouth to bind to the toxins that are in the intestinal tract and help stop them from getting absorbed into the bloodstream. If the pet has ingested an anticoagulant type of rodenticide, treatment usually involves administering Vitamin K to the pet (often for several weeks or longer depending on the generation of anticoagulant). It is also important to keep the pet quiet and not allow them to do any activity that might result in trauma and bleeding. If the veterinarian suspects the patient may have ingested a rodenticide based on clinical signs (bruising and bleeding) but there is no history of it, treatment may be started and blood testing can be done to evaluate the clotting ability of the animal’s blood.

Stewart: What is the filter or grid you look through?

We are not born with these filters or grids. They are slowly built or weaved over time. The experiences we’ve had, the things we have seen or think we’ve seen, what we have been told or overheard or thought we heard. It is our perception, and perception is reality until it can be proven differently to us and then we get a new perception.

Years ago a lady brought a stallion to me to work with. The stallion was shown as a halter horse at different shows and was winning top honors and taking all the trophies. However the stallion was getting to be more and more out of control as time went by and finally was banned from any more shows. The trainer that trained and showed the horse from the start couldn’t handle him any longer either, so the stallion was left with owners.

One day when the husband was feeding, the stallion took him down with his teeth and front feet. By the time the fellow crawled under the bottom rail out of the pen, the stallion had broken his collarbone and a rib or two and bruised him up pretty badly.

The horse wasn’t safe even to feed anymore. Someone that knew me suggested to the owners that they give me a call.

I agreed to have a look at the stallion to see if I could help.

When they arrived they led the stallion to a steel round pen and turned him loose. When I say led

him, the stallion was actually the one doing the leading, squealing, rearing, trying to bite and I wasn’t sure if they were going to make it to the round pen alive, let alone in one piece. I was working with another horse at the time and while I was finishing up I got to watch the stallion. All by himself in the round pen he would squeal, rear, throw himself on the ground, urinate all over himself and bite at his ribs. He would swing his head so fast and hard that his teeth would thump into his ribs. Then he would bite a bunch of his own hide and pull until it come out from between his teeth and you could hear his teeth snap together.

I finished up with the first horse and it was time to go have a visit with the stallion. I was thinking that I would be in the arena by myself as usual with the horse and maybe the owner but as it was getting closer to the time to start with the stallion, people started arriving. At first I didn’t know why they were all there but they all headed to the sitting area above the stallions pen and were waiting for the show. Someone had talked about the stallion and the word had got out and it had created quite a bit of interest with the local cowboys.

As I approached the pen the stallion ran at the fence, turned his head sideways and tried to bite me through the rails. Then he would turn, run away and

come at me again. The people that come to watch really were not my supporters.

After watching the stallion for a while, they thought I was out of my mind to actually be trying to get in the pen. They suggested getting a gun and shooting the horse and that the horse was a waste of time. At the very least a 2X4 to chase him away or rifle in case the stallion got me down and they could shoot him to save me. As I said earlier they weren’t really my supporters, but they were really beginning to dislike the horse and kind of warming up to me just because I was actually going in the pen.

The people watching, the owner and myself were all looking at the same horse, same situation all with our own set of filters. The owner was hopeful something could be done but to date had only seen the horse get worse. The other fellows that come to watch clearly figured the horse only needed lead between the ears. That he was no good for anything and was a crazy man killer.

I looked at the horse with my filters and wondered what had happened to the poor fellow to make him hate humans that much. I saw a smart horse that had learned all these behaviors from the handling he had been receiving. He wasn’t born biting himself, rearing, squealing, throwing himself on the ground

and attacking people.

I spent 10 days with that horse and changed his perception at least towards one human and was happy to know that my filter was working. He didn’t want to be the way he was, and with a different approach and looking at him my own particular filters, a horse emerged that wasn’t trying to mutilate itself and everything around it. The owner cried daily at the transformation. Many times in the 10 days I thought, “I’m not going to get out of this round pen alive” but each day got better as a trust and respect grew between us.

There was obviously much that went on in the 10 days and much more to the story but this is what I know.

A positive filter, even if only for one of the two in the pen at the start, still created a positive for both in the end.

Introducing grain to a ration is a gradual process. Rumen microbe populations need to adjust from a high fibre ration to one that contains more starch. Some rumen populations will decrease in numbers while others will increase. If a 1,300 pound cow is receiving 3 to 4 pounds of grain at the start of the change over, additional grain fed should not exceed 1 pound every second day.

Watch the manure. If the consistency is normal, the increases can continue as mentioned above. If the manure becomes runny and watery, this is an indication that the rumen is not functioning properly; and sub clinical acidosis is occurring. More severe symptoms can be bloat, grain overload. If the consistency of the manure is not normal, reduce the amount of grain fed and do not increase grain in the ration until the manure appears normal. The guideline for increasing grain content in the ration also applies to weaned calves and feeder animals.

Animals under 700 pounds tend to eat slower and chew feed more thoroughly than larger animals that gulp their food and rely on rumination to break the grain. When creep feeding calves on pasture, grains and peas do not need to be processed.

The increase in digestive efficiency varies with the type of grain processed. Improvements are 5 to 7% for oats, 12 to 15% for barley, 25% for wheat, rye, and triticale. Barley and oats can be broken into 2 or 3 pieces; while wheat, rye and triticale should be broken into 2 pieces. The processed bushel weight should be approximately 70% of the whole grain bushel weight. This is known as a rolling index. For rolled grain, if there is a line across the kernel and it breaks apart when it is rolled between the finger and thumb, this is adequate.

The processed grain should not contain more than 5% fines by weight when sieved over a 1 mm screen. Higher amounts of fines increase digestion rates which can lead to digestive upsets.

The ideal conditions for burning are typically days with average temperatures and minimal wind.

When burning during winter: Refrain from burning when an inversion is in place or is forecasted.

Consult local municipalities and authorities on how to mitigate impacts when undertaking larger winter burning projects near communities or roads.

Actively manage burn projects to reduce total burning time and smoke impacts.

Burn debris in stages so that you can adapt to changing weather conditions and reduce smoke.

Ensure good snow cover in the burn area (more than 15 cm).

‘Any burning should closely follow our guidelines,’ says StOnge. ‘Check weather conditions and make sure you have the resources on hand to control the burn at all times.’

After the burn, make sure the fire is out – soak it, stir it, soak it again. It is safe when it’s cool to the touch, but you should go back and check your burn site regularly after the burn to make sure it is completely extinguished.

EAT DRINK LOCAL to support B.C. restaurants The fall harvest is on, and British Columbians are encouraged to make an extra effort to support local restaurants during this year’s Buy BC: EAT DRINK LOCAL campaign.

Some of the province’s best-tasting ingredients and products are available this time of year. These flavours are showcased in the Buy BC: EAT DRINK LOCAL campaign, which is running from Oct. 15 to Nov. 15.

The campaign features 30 days of inspirational stories about restaurants and restaurateurs to encourage people to get out and support local business and enjoy a unique B.C. dining experience.

“British Columbians are passionate about local food and I encourage people to do their part by following our Buy BC: EAT DRINK

Natural gas prices ‘Alberta producers operating livestock barns, greenhouses and large heated shops will no doubt see their heating costs dramatically increase over the next 6 months,’ says Ryan Furtas, market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

‘To what extent the Alberta natural gas price increases is yet to be determined, but at least the prices are at a low spot to begin with and, for the past 5 years, producers have enjoyed low natural gas prices.’

demand. In North America, there was strong demand in the summer, which resulted in less gas being put into storage for winter months.

Prices are now poised to push higher, especially if a colder than normal winter occurs.

The upward pressure on the gas prices is global and North American markets are influenced by prices in other markets since gas can be exported. Prices for gas in Europe and Asia are nearly 4 times that of the port-ready North American values.

‘Here in Alberta prices have risen, but so far the increases could be described as minimal, especially since 2020, and the past 5 years has had relatively low gas prices. The Alberta price in September 2021 for natural gas increased to $3.87/GJ (Gigajoule), the highest price it’s been for the past 5 years.’

Since the fall of 2016, Alberta’s price of natural gas has spent approximately 85% of the time under $3.00/GJ, and 75% of the time priced less than $2.50/GJ. The most

Analysts talk about prices going to 2008 levels. If so, that would come as quite a shock, considering prices were above $6/GJ going into the 2008 commodity super cycle when prices topped out at over $10/GJ,’ explains Furtas.

Prespatou 4H Club Report Good morning readers, I don’t know about you but I am very sad that we don’t have any snow. My name is Jessica Wiebe and I am a member of the Prespatou 4-H Community Club!

It is that time of the year when the 4-H clubs are getting ready for the new 4-H year. What is 4-H ? 4-H is a program for youth between the ages of 6-21. You can do an animal project or a non-animal project.

The common animal projects in the North Peace are beef, sheep, swine, poultry , bees, dog, and horse. For the non-animal project, you can do photography, outdoor living, lather craft, wool crafts, sewing, ect. There are more, but too many to mention.

Why is 4-H important? 4-H is important because you learn different skills, such as public speaking, judging, interacting with animals and people. Most importantly, you learn to do by doing. It also helps you be organized by keeping records of

your projects, and what is going on in the club.

4-H is a really good way to start with learning responsibility because you have to take care of an animal or complete a different project in a certain time frame. I am really excited to see how big our club is going to be this year.

The projects our club will have to offer this year are beef and sheep.

This year the Lakeshore Club is offering beef, swine and sheep projects. Our members have been getting ready picking steers and female projects. We have members that have looked at multiple herds, and hundreds of steers, looking for that “perfect steer”. We will be weighing our steers and female projects at the beginning of November.

So far, we will have seven steers, and a few heifer projects, to go with six market hog projects and one market lamb project.

With any luck maybe we will be able to see everyone at our achievement days in July. Stay tuned for more info, as the Lakeshore Club will be doing another fundraiser in the spring!

Lest We Forget At Teepee Creek we always take the time to remember and thank the ones who came before us, the ones who fought for our great country and the ones who helped grow the strength in our communities and build our heritages. At this time we would like to recognize a past member of our community, Gordon Henry Rycroft.

As of October 6th, 1941, Gordon Henry Rycroft was an active member of the Canadian Army. Upon Gordon’s discharge he was awarded the following medals for his bravery in serving our great country of Canada during World War II: 1939-45 Star Italy Star France & Germany Star Defence Medal Canadian Volunteer Service Medal Clasp to the CVSM War Medal 1939-45 General Service Badge Gordon Rycroft did not stand alone on the battle field, he was amongst his five brothers, Sam, Danny, Jim, Bruce & Monty.

Gordon Rycroft was also an active community member of Teepee Creek and the Teepee Creek Stampede, helping out with work bee’s, bringing his tractor to the grounds to assist with maintenance and always had his gates open for camping.

Public engagement for the North Peace Fringe Area OCP closes tomorrow; residents urged to get their feedback in The Peace River Regional District has published a new draft of the North Peace Fringe Area Official Community Plan (OCP). This forward-looking document will set the framework for important land use planning decisions. The work began on this review back in 2015 and a version was last seen at a round of public open houses in 2018.

The new draft of the OCP sets a vision for the areas surrounding Taylor, Charlie Lake and Fort St. John, and will provide clear direction on new growth and development, what uses are permitted and how areas will be protected for things like agriculture, recreation and the environment.

The main themes of the NPFA-OCP include: •

Protection of the rural lifestyle for current and future residents

•

Collaboration on growth management, long range planning and fringe area planning

•

Protection of agricultural land for agricultural purposes

•

Sustainable resource management and community development Fringe area included in the OCP

The PRRD hosted a virtual open house series last week on November 4 and 6, addressing questions from residents and highlighting important areas in the draft. With the public engagement window closing tomorrow, November 12, residents are urged to review the draft and submit their feedback as we continue shaping the final version of the plan.

Dr. Surya Acharya receives 2021 Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research And Innovation An innovative and industryengaged forage breeder has been granted the 2021 Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation. Dr. Surya Acharya received this award today at the 2021 virtual Canadian Beef Industry Conference to recognize the positive impacts of his research on beef industry advancement.

“Dr. Acharya is respected and appreciated by academics and producers alike,” said Matt Bowman, chair of the Beef Cattle Research Council and a producer from Thornloe, Ontario. “His work addresses real industry obstacles with solutions that consider producers’ needs through direct communication with stakeholders.”

Dr. Acharya is a research scientist and forage breeder at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in Lethbridge, Alberta, where he specializes in breeding legumes.

His current research focuses on developing new cultivars of legume species with improvements in yield, nutritional quality and persistence, among other traits. His

unique approach to plant breeding incorporates a consideration of multiple factors to best serve the needs of end-users, including beef producers. Indeed, many of Dr. Acharya’s past cultivars are appreciated for their practical use in solving industry challenges, such as his AC Oxley II and AC Veldt cicer milkvetch varieties, both of which are much quicker to establish than predecessors. Similarly, he assisted in the development of the online Forage U-Pick tool, which aids western Canadian producers in choosing appropriate forage species for their operations.

Dr. Acharya’s most recent project aims to enhance the lipid content of legume vegetative tissues to improve their energy content for grazing livestock.

Using conventional and genomic breeding techniques, his team has been able to select for plants with approximately five percent lipid content, compared to virtually none in the original plants. His project will have environmental benefits by using conventional breeding to reduce methane production

through increased digestibility, which will allow western Canadian alfalfa producers to export to nations that avoid the GMO designation.

“This project is another example of Dr. Acharya’s commitment to offering practical benefits to industry through consideration of a variety of important factors, making him an exemplary recipient of the Canadian Beef Industry Award for Outstanding Research and Innovation,” Bowman added.

To best address industry needs, Dr. Acharya has actively sought out producer input through attendance at a variety of industry events and by directly asking for feedback through agricultural media. He is actively involved in industry and academic conferences and regularly publishes producertargeted articles detailing his recent work. He also has offered his time to multiple journals, as president of the International College of Nutrition from 2005 to 2007 and as the current chair of the Alberta Forage Industry Network.

As the author of more than 180 scientific manuscripts, five books, eight book chapters, 16 review articles, and contributions to more than 285 other publications, he is an expert at communicating with both producer and scientific communities.

While Dr. Acharya has received much recognition for innovations in forage breeding, perhaps his greatest accomplishment has been developing more than 25 commercially released perennial forage and native grass species.

Dr. Acharya is an adjunct professor at the University of Manitoba, University of Saskatchewan, China Agricultural University and the University of Lethbridge, as well as a guest professor at Inner Mongolia Agriculture University. He holds a Master of Science in Agriculture focusing on Agricultural Botany from Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology and received a Ph.D. in 1979 from the University of Saskatchewan in Crop Science.

‘Canola harvested with either green canola or cereal seeds or green plant material increased the risk of spoilage,’ says Neil Blue, provincial crops market analyst with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘And some canola has already been reported as spoiling in storage.’

Most parts of the Prairies received some late season rain.

Generally, that rain was too late to help with crop yields, as most plants were already mature. However, those rains stimulated widespread plant growth.

That green growth led to harvest delays and difficulties, particularly for canola. Standing canola was stimulated to grow after the dry summer, leading to late flowering and even some seed development in immature pods. In the absence of a killing frost, swathed canola soon had fresh canola growing into the swaths.

‘Although canola for marketing purposes is considered dry at 10% moisture, safe longer-term storage moisture levels are below 8%. If it is binned at high temperatures, canola can even spoil at 6% moisture,’ explains

After being placed into storage, canola respires for a month or more, and this respiration can release moisture, which in turn can cause heating. Aerating canola during this respiration period will reduce or eliminate the chance of spoilage.

Some producers also “turn” their canola by removing some canola from each bin, let it sit on a truck for a day or more, then return that canola to the bin. A recommended time to do this is as outside temperatures turn colder. Aerating and turning will help to even out the temperature of the stored canola and break up the natural temperature and moisture flow within the bin.

‘At historically high canola prices, producers need to protect the integrity of their valuable crop in storage,’ says Blue.
