Peace region pest update is back for the summer!

Hello! We will be back with bi-weekly articles on a variety of different topics, and today’s is about the BC Peace Weather website! 21 different stations around the BC Peace region provide users with more localized weather conditions. Available for use is not only a 48 hour weather forecast for each station, but Growing Degree Days (GDD), a Wheat Midge predictor tool, a Fusarium Headblight (FHB) predictor tool and access to historical data. To use GDD, pick your desired station and then pick a seeding date and end date.

It will give you a summary of the number of days at bases of 0°C, 5°C, 10°C with actual and normal headings. You can make the tool more crop specific by choosing from canola, wheat and barley.

The tool will then show when key stages of growth have occurred or potentially will. The wheat midge calculator shows not only the daily GDD and accumulated GDD for a given period but the predicted emergence of Wheat Midge. The FHB tool acts similar

The historical data starts from May 2018, when the creation of the BC Weather Network was undertaken to the current date. A choice of charts or tables is available depending on preference of the user. Also available is the ability to export data onto your computer or smart device. The information provided in the exported data includes temperature, humidity, rainfall and wind from the dates you choose. There is also a user guide to help you navigate the site. The website is free for users to sign up and access. With signing up you can set notifications to allow you to be notified of weather events.

FireSmart your spring cleaning – around your property The 4 C’s of a FireSmart yard ‘To reduce the risk of wildfire on your property, keep in mind the 4 C’s: cut, cultivate, clean and check,’ says Stewart.

Cut Keep your grass well-maintained to 10 cm or less. Dry grass can be hazardous not just in the spring, but in late fall and winter as well.

Under the right weather conditions, with high winds and no snow cover, grass fires any time of year can spread quickly and threaten farms, ranches and acreages.

Mowing your grass is a good way to help prevent the spread of wildfire. Studies and field tests have proven fall mowing to be an effective fuelbreak, slowing the spread of wildfire and giving firefighters a chance to contain the fire. Mowing grass short in the fall will put you ahead of the game in the spring.

Cultivate Till around your home and outbuildings.

This will help prevent the spread of fire into your yard and give the local fire department an anchor point to work from. If you have property that adjoins a community, subdivision or other residence, talk to your neighbours.

This proactive step will protect them, as well as you, from wildfire. This practice will also have you ready for the spring wildfire season, with one less thing to worry about when you could be seeding.

Clean Clean out flower beds next to your house and outbuildings. Dead and dry flower and plant stems that build up in flower beds can easily ignite from embers blown around by the wind from an advancing wildfire. Once this vegetation catches fire, it can easily ignite a house or outbuildings. Clean up the down and dead wood in your yard, shelter belts, woodlots, and near your home and fences.

Check Check for trees and branches that may have fallen on power lines over the winter. In 2020, 37 wildfires were caused by incidents such as downed power lines coming into contact with trees. Check your poles for rot and replacement; if the pole belongs to your local utility provider, contact them with your concerns. Walk the lines and look for any tree branches or trees in poor condition that may come in contact with the line in high wind.

Technology, innovation to strengthen B.C.’s food security The Province is investing in programs that will apply technology and innovation to agriculture to strengthen B.C.’s food security and support economic recovery.

Building on the Food Security Task Force’s recommendations, the new Agritech Concierge will support food producers and agritech innovators, including recipients of the Agritech Grant program, advance their businesses and address the agricultural challenges being faced by the agriculture industry, in B.C. and around the globe.

“Supporting our province’s food producers and agritech innovators is part of building a strong economic recovery for everyone,” said Premier John Horgan. “We’re acting on the valued work and recommendations of our Food Security Task Force. By launching these programs now, our province will reap the benefits of access to homegrown, safe, nutritious and affordable food for generations of British Columbians to come.”

The task force was appointed by Premier Horgan in July 2019 to provide strategic advice and recommendations brought forward in a 2020 Food Security Task Force report. The report outlined how technology and innovation can be developed to strengthen B.C.’s agriculture sector and food security.

Through a suite of services, the Agritech Concierge will help businesses grow, diversify, access new markets and attract investment opportunities. The concierge will provide personalized service to businesses to attract investment capital, navigate government programs and connect with other levels of government.

The concierge will help companies understand and navigate the land opportunities available to grow their businesses and provide advice on how to work with communities to identify opportunities for investment.

“The pandemic has reinforced the vital role our province’s agricultural sector plays in ensuring that British Columbians have access to safe, reliable and sustainable food,” said Ravi Kahlon, Minister of Jobs, Economic Recovery and Innovation. “These investments and the concierge will strengthen our province’s food security, catalyze innovation and ensure the agritech sector will play a key role in our economic recovery.”

After a successful intake of the Agritech Grant program, the B.C. government has increased the program’s funding by an additional $4.5 million, for a total investment of $7.5 million. With this new funding, the number of companies eligible for the Agritech Grant increased from a projected 10 companies to 21. The grants will be awarded to the recipients by March 31, 2021.

Funded projects include the development of custom robotics for safe, efficient berry and mushroom harvesting, low-cost wireless biosensors to monitor pathogens in agriculture and community-scale manure management.

“We remain fully committed to increasing our food security in B.C.,” said Lana Popham, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries.

“Agritech is one of the ways to do that, and by supporting agritech businesses and entrepreneurs, we can continue to develop and create a world-leading agritech sector that will help increase our domestic food production, strengthen our domestic resiliency and expand our reach into international markets.”

The Agritech Grant program is part of StrongerBC: BC’s Economic Recovery Plan. The plan focuses on recovery that is innovative, sustainable and inclusive. It outlines the latest steps the Government of British Columbia is taking to help people, businesses and communities come out of COVID-19 stronger, without leaving people behind.

The Peace River Regional District board has rejected a request from the Nor’ Pioneer Women’s Institute to hold a plant sale next month.

The WI wanted to hold the 10-day sale in mid to late-May at the Cecil Lake transfer station as part of its ongoing fundraising for a community emergency fund, the Cecil Lake Cemetery, and the Women’s Resource Society.

Electoral Area B Director Karen Goodings said the organization was also considering the Cecil Lake Store as a venue, and wanted the group to be able to use the station as a second option. Both said they would take precautions and follow current COVID-19 public health rules, which currently limit outdoor events to 10.

But Goodings received pushback from other directors over a rise in cases and whether public gatherings should be allowed at PRRD facilities. The board voted 9-1 against her motion to give the WI permission to use the station.

Dawson Creek Mayor Dale Bumstead said the health orders needed to be rigorously followed.

“We have to make sure that is the first and foremost guiding principle of how we allow any kind of public gathering on our regional district facilities,” he said. “If it’s contrary to the public health order, then it’s out.”

Goodings responded: “You’ve obviously not ever been to a plant sale,” she said. “Because people don’t go to the plant sale and stay there all day. They go, they look, they see. If there’s some plants that they’ve been looking for - raspberry plants, strawberry plants, whatever - they purchase and leave.”

“It’s not a case of them coming together and holding some kind of a big event where they’re cooking hamburgers and hot dogs and everybody is going to stick around. That’s just not the way they’re going to do it,” Goodings said.

Goodings urged the board to give the Nor’ Pioneer WI, founded 87 years ago, the benefit of the doubt.

“Put the rules in place,” Goodings said. “Make sure they are aware that Covid is our number one concern, that we will not do anything that would be disrespectful of the province’s rules.”

“I just think that for an organization that’s been around as long as this one in our community that we should give them the benefit of the doubt,” Goodings said.

Tumbler Ridge Mayor Keith Bertrand said he understood the importance of the group, but didn’t like the idea of allowing events at PRRD facilities. He said his community has delayed its 40th anniversary celebration this year because of the pandemic. tsummer@ahnfsj.ca

FSJ’s new festival plaza opens with farmers market Fort St. John’s new festival plaza opened to the public Saturday with the first farmers market of the season.

The new plaza facility is large and spacious, full of natural light, and has vendors stationed both inside and out.

The market is open until 3 p.m. Masks are required and visitors are asked to practice social distancing and good sanitization practices.

The plaza, at the corner of 100 Street and 96 Avenue, includes an all-season building for events and markets, an outdoor performance space, stalls for food vendors, public washrooms, and artistic obelisks for heating and lighting. Kalmar Construction built the plaza, as part of a $3.27-million tender awarded last year.

Patrons checking out the plaza for the first time were really impressed, and are excited about the possibilities it presents to both the farmer’s market and other events.

“It’s awesome, a lot better to have it here than at the senior’s hall. It’s much better for the farmers, and I can’t wait to see (the plaza) with the doors open,” said Robyn Flynn.

Jane Sheldon said, “It’s really great. We’re so happy to see some people back after such a long time.”

Last year, local artists were invited to submit concepts to adorn the fire obelisks installed around the plaza performance space. Each obelisk features gas-fueled cauldron within an enclosed steel structure to illuminate the imagery and provide heat to spectators.

April Beard said she likes the new plaza and can’t wait to see what it looks like when the obelisks are lit up, as her daughters enjoyed running around the performance space.

Vendors were glad to finally hold an event at the new plaza.

“We’re really lucky to have a facility like this in Fort St. John,” said vendor Michelle Schaeffer.

Farmer’s market president Bess Legault was busy in the morning making sure everyone — vendors and patrons — were set up, had what they needed, and were enjoying themselves.

“So far, so good. Everyone seems to be having a great time,” said Legault.

The plaza also features eight leaning wood poles mimicking the skeleton structure of a teepee, artistic paving patterns with a variety of coloured concrete surfaces, including a coloured river that mimics the alignment of the Peace River, and bronze paw prints to replicate true gaits and spacing of wildlife.

Women’s Institute - deeds done in the district Hello WI members and interested readers. Thanks again to the Horizon for allowing us this space to tell you what WI has done in this district and in the province and at the national level.

The Peace River has had its share of notables at the provincial level, but this is our first to have one of our own members move to the president of the national Women’s Institutes of Canada. Joan Holthe, from Doe River WI is now holding that office.

Congratulations Joan!! I had a nice visit with Joan and she told me what this journey has been like for her. Joan’s story begins when she2021 moved to Doe River and began farming with her husband, Larry.

Joan was invited to a Women’s Institute meeting where the members embraced her as their own, becoming secretary (and still is after 30 years!). She right away became involved in her local branch, the Peace District, and at the provincial level. Going to conferences and travelling was a treat but the business was important as well with new and old friends to meet.

Joan became BCWI President for a three year term and that took her to national meetings and eventually she became a representative on the Federated WI Board of Canada, now known as Women’s Institutes of Canada.

Joan remembers when she was a new member at a Federated conference hosted in BC, She noted that the president of FWIC was a down to earth woman, nothing pretentious about her and it crossed her mind that her job as president did not require a Philadelphia lawyer or a high and mighty person to do this job.

She realized that our organization

was there to help you grow, gain confidence and give support for your ideas and causes. When Joan became president elect for three years before a term as President from 2018 to 2021, she knew that it was not going to be a piece of cake. However, trusted that there was a good board working along side, office staff in our head office in Ontario, and of course, the encouragement and support of her husband, Larry.

How dreadful this pandemic has been for our organization, and of course many other organizations, also. No gatherings, no fund raising, makes it extremely stressful as most of our members are seniors who need the warm contact of our meetings. It was to be a pleasurable part of her job as national president to visit all the provinces over the next 3 years of her term. But of course that came to an abrupt halt last March.

FWIC owns a museum which houses our office , and of course it remained closed over the past year, decreasing our income and forcing us to reduce staffing.

However, Covid-19 has given our members new incentives to meet, communicate and keep our business and concerns moving.

Skype, Zoom and social media are the new buzzwords, old dogs have learned new tricks, and members have never communicated so much with provinces and other parts of the world as now. Joan is hoping that this isolation will create a new respect and need for Women’s Institutes and for other organizations as well.

Over 100 years ago, during the pandemic that rocked the world then, women stepped forward and helped in the recovery, and here we are, available to fill that need today. Women’s Institute members were at the forefront

by teaching, fund raising, supporting, and again we see a time where getting ‘Back to Basics’ is the buzzword for today.

Our members are available for canning lessons, meal planning, crafting, and other talents that never grow old, and now we see a new generation looking to receive the benefits of our experience. A zoom call is better than nothing but it will never take the place of a warm hug and broad smile!

Joan’s term is up in July, then she can rest on her laurels, and look forward to being just a member, but ready to step forward to do her bit, as our motto says: For Home and Country.

Thank you to the Horizon for giving Women’s Institutes the space to share our World Wide work. Thank you, Joan Holthe, for enlightening us on the important work we do.

Poly-Species Cover Crop

Results from the 2020 growi By: Mathieu Enger, B.Eng; Lance Ouellette, M.Sc., CCA-ON The objective of the annual poly-species cover crop trial was to measure the above-ground biomass produced by different mixes, and 1) to assess the forage value of such mixes, and 2) to quantify changes in soil organic matter levels. Eight different combinations of annual cover crop species were sown in a complete randomized block design with four replicates. A well-rounded cover crop mix provides above ground biomass (soil armour) and below ground biomass (root systems of different depths and traits). To achieve this, a blend of cool season grasses, cool season broadleaves, cool season legumes, warm season broadleaves, and warm season grasses were created. Most mixes were composed of 7-8 different species. Two mixes, Ultimate Annual Blend and Pinpoint Blend were developed by Union Forage; six mixes were conceived inhouse at NPARA. All above-ground biomass was harvested and submitted for nutritive analysis. The same feed quality factors were dry matter weight, crude protein content, total digestible nutrients (TDN), acid detergent fibre (ADF), calcium content (Ca), and phosphorus content (P).

Prior to planting, a composite sample of soil was taken on a per-plot basis and submitted for soil chemical analysis. Characteristics of focus were nitrogen and carbon levels of the soil. A similar sampling is scheduled to take place on the same plots in 2021. Results will be compared to those taken in 2020. This before-and-after approach to measuring carbon content in the soil will provide insight into the below-ground biomass contributions to carbon and nitrogen from the cover crop mixes. Results will be presented in the 2021 annual report.

Overview: Trial consisted of eight annual cover crop mixes seeded in small plots and following a randomized complete block design with four replicates.

Conclusion: In 2020, weather conditions were not favorable for most crops in the peace region. Accumulated precipitation was well above the normal, thus leading to poor emergence and added physiological stress on seedlings.

There were significant differences in many of the nutritive indicators measured including dry matter (P=0.002), crude protein (P=0.001), TDN (P=0.02), and phosphorus content (P=0.03). ADF (P=0.18) and calcium (P=0.06) were not statistically significant. NPARA Blend #6 produced 2.6 tonnes/acre of dry matter, the highest of any treatment. These results are likely owing to aboveground growth of the ryegrass. NPARA blends #4 and #1 had the highest level of crude protein at 33.4% and 31.5%, respectively. NPARA Blend #1 (75.1%), and Pinpoint Blend (74.7%), exhibited the highest TDN values. The coefficient of variation was high (>10) for all except ADF and TDN. This was likely due to unseasonably wet conditions during the growing season.

This week - on those backyard pigs Dr. Charlotte Corbett

Pigs are great farmyard additions. Pigs are hardy, very smart and have unique personalities. Whether you have weaner pigs for the summer or are breeding pigs, diet and healthcare are important. Pigs have litters, averaging 10 piglets per litter. A gilt is the name for a female pig that has not had a litter. Sows are female pigs that have had piglets. Boars are males and barrows are males that have been castrated. There are many breeds of pigs with the most common being the Landrace, a white pig ideal for commercial production.

Common backyard breeds include Berkshire and Tamworth. Pigs are very intelligent and can be taught simple tricks. They are easy to train to come for food, but it can be very difficult to herd pigs.

Pigs need a dry warm area where they can be sheltered from rain, snow and wind. A shed filled with straw is an excellent way to keep them warm as they will bury themselves in, especially during the winter months. Pigs love mud, but it is very important for them to have somewhere dry as well. It is also good to have a turnout area or pasture where they can dig into the dirt and mud, as well as eat roots

of plants. These turnout areas or pastures will not remain flat – pigs are notorious for digging and making mud holes. These mud holes are important for pigs to keep cool and help prevent sunburn. Having mud, dirt, grass and trees are good for pigs’ welfare as it keeps them active and engaged. Piglets born in a barn will need supplemental iron – those that are allowed to go outside or have dirt floor pens get iron from the soil as they root around.

Pigs are omnivores, meaning that they will eat both plants and animals. The majority of their diet should be a pig ration of different grains, with garden leftovers as a supplement.

Pigs eat roots and will graze when they are kept on pasture but should be supplemented with pig feed. Pigs are often viewed as the garbage disposals of the farmyard, but there are some foods to steer clear of. Raw meat, raw eggs, foods high in sugar, rhubarb, moldy food and raw sweet potatoes are all foods that can cause health problems. Pigs should not be fed any products that contain pork. Most producers do not add meat into their pigs’ diet as it can be a way of transmitting disease, especially if fed raw. Pigs generally get all the protein they need from using high protein grains in the ration. Pigs rarely overeat (unless they are pot belly pigs) and can be fed with large feeders. When keeping pigs in groups, care must be taken to make sure that there is enough space for all the pigs to eat. Keep an eye on the older and younger animals as these are generally lower on the pecking order.

Even backyard pigs should have a basic herd health plan. Sows and gilts should be vaccinated with Farrowsure, which helps to protect against parvovirus, erysipelas and leptospirosis. These diseases cause reproductive failure, small litters and can make piglets extremely sick. Tetanus is a disease found in soil, especially in rusted equipment. Any animal, including people, can get infected with tetanus, often with disastrous effects. There is a tetanus vaccine available. Deworming is important as well.

Pigs are dewormed with Ivermectin once yearly, unless there is cause for concern.

Biosecurity is extremely important in large

commercial pig barns, but it is also very important for small herds or backyard pigs.

There are many infectious diseases that can travel between pigs. The most common diseases cause signs related to respiratory disease, reproductive disease and diarrhea.

Many of these diseases can be fatal, especially to young piglets. Vaccinations can help to prevent some of these diseases. Others have no prevention, except to prevent the disease from getting into your herd. New additions should be quarantined for at least 14 days to look for signs of illness. Changing clothes and shoes between visiting other farms helps to minimize the spread. Single pigs should not be introduced suddenly into new groups as pigs have a hierarchy and fights can break out.

Pigs are wonderful additions to your farm life. For beginners, getting a couple weaner pigs for the summer is a great way to start.

Overcoming common issues for clients and horses “What is the most common issue you see with your clients and their horses, and how do you solve it?”

This is a question I was asked to write about. Here are some thoughts I had around that topic...

Hard to trailer load. Won’t slow down. Can’t get him to go. Won’t stand to be mounted. Won’t stand to be saddled. Can’t take him away from the other horses. Can’t ride with other horses.

Spooks at things. Jigs on the trail. Bad with his feet. Hard to catch. Pulls back. Bucks when I try to canter. Doesn’t lead very well. Kicks at other horses. Horse doesn’t mind stepping on the owner or running into them. Doesn’t like water. Can’t ride him through mud. Runs up all the hills. Pins his ears at feeding time. Only spooky inside arenas, only spooky outside.

Bangs his head in the trailer. Tosses his head.

Hard to bridle. Hard to needle. Hard to worm.

Can’t get a right lead. Can’t get a left lead.

Jumps too high. Won’t jump. Aggressive to other horses. Can’t get him to quit bucking.

He’s got a hard mouth. He tosses his head.

The list goes on and you’re welcome to add any that you can think of. These are just a few that crop up regularly; I’m not sure which is the most common. I think I was meant to pick an issue and give an answer. A person might take a more lateral approach and talk about something that could benefit all these areas of issue.

The list above of can’t, won’t, doesn’t, hard to, is very common with the horse owning public but does not have to be. I could pick one but thought it more effective to talk about something deeper than what is on the surface; and that is: being open to learning. I have found that the more I learn, the more I see the value in being open to learn and the more I actually learn to learn. I wish I would have

been blessed to be the perfect student. When a person starts a young horse, if they know what to look for, they can witness the horse slowly learning to learn. The horse learns from the herd but is not used to learning from humans. I thought I was open to learning, because my first clinic for 2 days cost $300 and I organized it for 3 months prior. My next clinic cost me $15000 for a 3 month course and that was 25 years ago. A lot of money today; and quite a bit more back then. That sounds like someone that surely must be open to learning. Looking back there was many things that I did or didn’t do that really affected the pace at which I learnt. At times pride and ego got in my way, at other times my ability to be able to really stay focused on what I should be doing slowed things down. I didn’t know that watching and then doing was only one of the ways to learn; it was just the way I preferred to do it.

Over time it was shown to me that reading and writing about the things I was learning were very valuable. I refer to things now that I wrote down ten years ago. I just wanted to do it, not read or write about it. I barely wanted to talk about it, let’s just get on with it. That whole charge straight ahead thinking gets in the way of good horsemanship. Reading, writing and watching DVDs alone is also very ineffective for good horsemanship. There is no substitute for experience, but back it up with the reading, writing and watching. Some people have a much more open to learning attitude and they are always the ones that go the furthest the fastest with their horses regardless of their physical abilities. After 25 years of teaching horsemanship clinics it has been proven to me over and over. That is not to say do whatever a person tells you because there will be lots of information that you might want to stay away from. If the person giving the advice has any of the earlier mentioned problems with their horse and doesn’t know how to fix them or

says that it can’t be fixed or the horse likes acting that way, a fella might want to look for a different source for advice. There are two places to get information and learn about horses. One is from a person that knows, the other is the horse. The horse is harder to learn from, because he can’t speak any language, English or otherwise. They will tell you in their own way if they like or understand and also if they don’t. That is where the big list of issues above comes from. These are all ways the horse is saying he doesn’t understand, doesn’t like a person’s approach, the feel or timing; or has not been prepared for the thing you are expecting him to do.

With a proper set of goals to work towards and good information you can get on a track that will develop your horsemanship skills and knowledge; which will in turn help you get rid of the fears, and leave pride and ego on the shelf while with horses. A good set of goals means not putting the cart ahead of the horse. For example: personally, I would not compete if my horse had any of the list of issues at the top of this article. I know that any of those issues will negatively affect any competition I was entered in. I also know I would be lacking a good deal of knowledge if I had any of those problems and didn’t know how to fix them. Therefore, my goal would be to learn more.

The Donation Steer initiative originated as an idea of past Valhalla club leader, Delwyn Postman, who had been seeking a way for the members to give thanks to the community for years of support. Tragically, in November of 1992, Delwyn was killed in a motor vehicle accident on his way to the meeting where he was planning to present his idea. In his memory, 4-H members and fellow leaders have continued on with the program ever since. Valhalla and Beaverlodge 4-H Clubs are proud to have raised over $234,000 and donated to over 59 charities during this time.

Twenty-four innovators advance to Food Waste Reduction Challenge semi-finals The Minister of Agriculture and AgriFood, the Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced the 24 semi-finalists for Streams A and B of the $20-million Food Waste Reduction Challenge, an initiative under the Food Policy for Canada.

The Challenge was launched in November 2020 to accelerate and advance diverse and high-impact solutions to food waste in Canada. Streams A and B focus on business model solutions that can prevent or divert food waste at any point from farm to plate.

This first round of the Challenge attracted 343 applications from innovators across Canada and around the world. The 24 semi-finalists’ entries span a diverse range of areas including production, inventory management, transportation, food waste measurement, marketplace solutions, food safety, food recovery, upcycling, and organic waste treatment.

Each semi-finalist will receive $100,000 and move on to the market demonstration stage of the Challenge. Over the next eight months, semi-finalists will pilot their solutions in Canada through rigorous testing, evaluation and reporting on their solution’s effectiveness. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will then select up to 12 finalists for Streams A and B. Each finalist will receive up to an additional $400,000, with one winner per stream awarded a grand prize of up to $1.5 million.

According to estimates, more than half of Canada’s food supply is wasted annually and nearly $50 billion of that wasted food is avoidable. By encouraging more solutions to food waste in Canadian society, we can increase food availability, save consumers and businesses money and strengthen our food systems, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Entries were evaluated against established criteria, including potential volume of food waste reduction, level of innovation and scalability as well as environmental, social and economic benefits.

This week, I spoke with 2021’s Bin Top Artist in Residence Payge Fortier about her exhibition Bos Taurus, as well as her experience working as an artist in our small, northern community.

The Bin Top Artist in Residence is organized by the Dawson Creek Art Gallery, stay tuned for updates on how to apply for next year’s program.

There are elements of Payge’s story may be familiar to many artists in our area. It is a stellar example of a born artist’s resilience and determination to pursue what many may perceive to be an unlikely career path. Fortier was raised on a small cattle operation outside of Dawson Creek, BC. Creatives are found on both sides of her family including spinners and weavers, as well as skilled builders and draftsmen. However, her family’s blue collar background necessitated that they express their creativity through practical projects such as quilts and garments.

Payge inherited this inner drive to create, and describes herself as an artist in her core. Her artistic spark ignited as early as she can remember. As a young child, she was “mesmerized” by her older sister’s drawings, which she worked to emulate, and soon enough she was trading her drawings at school for better lunches. At nine years old, she took her first art class at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery, where she discovered her voracious appetite for all things art-related.

Thereafter, she attended every art class she could throughout her elementary and high school years, after which she enrolled in Laine Dahlen’s Visual Arts Program at Northern Lights College, which was sadly discontinued in 2014 After completing the Northern Lights program, Fortier transferred to Alberta University of Arts in Calgary. This was a difficult process for her, as no one in her family had pursued post secondary education before, let alone art school out of province.

Navigating university and city life on her own was overwhelming for the artist, and she returned home before completing her second year.

Payge remembers her time at Northern Lights fondly, and preferred NLC’s small class sizes and hands on approach to AUAC’s theorybased curriculum, stating, “Just because it’s a big institution, doesn’t mean it’s better quality”.

As the Gallery’s 2021 Bin Top Artist in Residence, Fortier has created Bos Taurus, an impressive series celebrating the way of life of traditional cattle ranchers in the Peace Region. In Bos Taurus, Payge solidifies her own visual language using expressive brush strokes, bold colours and clever layering. Through her skilled hand, Fortier brings out the liveliness and unique characteristics of her bovine subjects.

Rendering them with a gentleness and warmth that originates from the true affection the artist holds for these animals, which are so central to the lifestyle and traditions of her family and community.

Bos Taurus is on display now at the Kiwanis Performing Arts Centre until June 4th. KPAC is open to the public during regular hours, so please stop by and experience the show in person.

FEEDING TRACE MINERALS

There are many considerations when feeding minerals and trace minerals to animals.

It takes between 60 to 90 days for a supplementation program to replenish trace mineral nutrient levels in a deficient animal. The presence of binding nutrients such as sulfur and molybdenum will interfere with copper absorption. Supplementing copper oxide, which is almost 100% unavailable to ruminants, should be avoided. Body condition score, weather conditions, and stage of production all impact animal requirements.

There are two different forms of minerals – inorganic and organic. Organic refers to the mineral (for example copper, manganese, or zinc) is linked to a second molecule that contains carbon. It could be a metal proteinate, an organic acid, a methyl hydroxy analog or a glycinate as the second molecule or carrier of the trace mineral. It does not mean that the product is a certified organic. All forms have their benefits and limitations.

What to use will depend on what is happening on the operation. Are there problems with fertility or reproductive efficiency? Are the offspring not growing well or have health problems related to poor immunity? When nutrition programs are not solving these issues, it is worth investigating the use of the organic forms of trace minerals.

There is literature that states organic minerals have an increased bioavailability compared to the inorganic or standard mineral. Unfortunately, the results from one experiment, or series of experiments, are valid within the parameters of the experiments. Changes in animal body condition score, health status, stage of production (pregnant, lactating or growth rate) environmental conditions, previous nutrition and current plane of nutrition all impact the animals’ ability to utilize the nutrients. Thus, bioavailability of the mineral is different for each situation.

There are situations where the organic minerals do improve performance, but these products can be more costly than other options. If a balanced nutrition program that contains an inorganic product is not resolving production and reproduction problems; then the organic products are an option to consider.

Working with a nutritionist and veterinarian is recommended to resolve production, reproduction and health problems.

Minister Bibeau launches program to create 2,000 youth Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, the Honourable Mariejobs in the agriculture sector Claude Bibeau, and the Member of Parliament for Glengarry–

Prescott–Russell, Francis Drouin, hosted a virtual event to announce an investment of up to $21.4 million to enhance the Youth Employment and Skills Program (YESP) and fund about 2,000 jobs for youth in the agriculture sector. They were joined by Chair of the Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum Justin Williams, and representatives from three past program participants: Delta, British Columbia’s Cropthorne Farm Ltd.; Coaldale, Alberta’s Kasko Cattle Co.; and St-Eugène, Ontario’s Les Fruits du Poirier.

The YESP aims to support agri-food employers and provide young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30 with job experience in agriculture that could lead to a career working in the sector. In 2020, the Government of Canada invested $9.2 million for the YESP, to fund nearly 1,000 jobs. Today’s investment more than doubles last year’s allocation.

Eligible applicants include producers, agri-businesses, industry associations, provincial and territorial governments, Indigenous organizations and research facilities. Support can cover the period from April 15, 2021 to March 31, 2022. Applications for the YESP are now being accepted and forms are available through the webpage.

Indigenous applicants and employers who hire a youth facing barriers are eligible to receive up to 80% of total eligible costs, up to a maximum of $14,000.

Plants can help solve soil quality crimes for Shellie English, CreekTop Farming Co. Initial Questions & Management Issues Shellie English wants to improve a field that has been “mined” by the previous owners relocating topsoil to a greenhouse, resulting in very poor soil quality. In the spring of 2018, we established a pair of benchmarks as her “starting points” so that she can monitor her success as she makes improvements to her soil. In 2018, Shellie asked Henry Braun, a neighbour and custom operator, to focus on weed control (i.e. quackgrass & Canada thistle). In the spring of 2019, Shellie seeded a select sainfoin forage mix suited for improving soil conditions, with no cover crop.

Henry seeded the same sainfoin forage mix across the road in his own field, but with a cover crop of oats. Soil Landscape Starting Point Before embarking on a plan to improve soil quality, it is crucial to understand the initial soil landscape that is your starting point. Shellie’s key message for other cooperators is “I can’t stress enough how much we learned by pausing for this step. We modified our plan based on what we learned here.”

Soil Type: Falher (FA on maps) soils were derived from clayey glaciolacustrine deposits on undulating landscapes with elevations less than 700m. They have weakly calcareous and saline subsoils.

Areas mapped as Falher may contain 4060% Chernozemic soils and Solonetzic soils. Falher soils are moderately well drained, slowly pervious Dark Gray Solods and Black Solonetzic soils. Slope: 3 on the soil map = very gentle slopes

Soil Quality Study 2015 - 2020 practices Soil Quality Study Overview The soil quality field kit was initiated by Sandra Burton & Dr. Bill McGill, over 5 years ago as a communication tool during PRFA-UNBC Soils, Forage & Water Dynamics Courses. It was further tested during 2 larger producer innovation based projects: Innovative Management Practices for Resiliency & Improving Productivity & Profitability of Forages. We have enjoyed collaboration with many people, especially Julie Robinson, Matthias Loeseken, Aaron Mackay and the 17 farm cooperators involved in the study.

Initial Questions 1. Is the kit farmer field friendly? We addressed this in the 2015 season and found that some of the methods were time consuming for a field test. We modified the methods supplied with the kit. 2. Which soil properties are relevant to each on-farm demo?

We selected a core of 7 “must do” soil properties, then added more as requested by the cooperator or relevant to the questions at the on farm demonstrations. 3. Does the field kit assist in dialog with farmers to improve their management practices? The methods and results were conversation starters at more than a dozen workshops and field days over the last 5 years. 4. Can the field kit help establish benchmarks with cooperators that can be revisited later to measure changes? This report shares the field work methods and preliminary answers to these questions. To date, 32 pairs or 64 benchmarks each have summary Soil Quality Report Cards, involving 17 cooperators spread across the Peace (primarily in BC).

Soil Quality Improving Practices The cooperators that came forward with their questions can be grouped into 6 soil quality improving practices. This is a sampling of possible practices to improve soil quality, not a complete list.

While fireworks can be a fun, enjoyable way to celebrate in the summer, they can also come with a hefty price tag if you inadvertently start a wildfire. Written permission is required to use fireworks or exploding targets in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta year-round.

‘While fun, exploding targets and fireworks can also cause unintentional wildfires.

It’s important to know the facts before you purchase them,’ says Melissa Story, provincial information officer with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry.

Legislative changes in 2017 prohibited the use of fireworks and exploding targets without written permission from a Forest Officer. The debris caused when fireworks and exploding targets are detonated are hot and risk causing a wildfire when they come into contact with fuels in the forest, such as dry grass.

‘So far this season, we’ve seen 2 unintentional wildfires started by exploding targets,’ says Story. ‘The ground is dry right now and wildfires can ignite easily and spread very fast in dead, dry grasses. If you are found to be responsible for starting a wildfire, you may have to pay a $600 fine or worse, the cost of fighting the wildfire.’

Last year 88% of wildfires were humancaused and these are completely preventable.

Register for Open Farm Days

Registration is now open for farms and ranches to be part of the next edition of Open Farm Days.

The weekend showcases Alberta’s agriculture industry and growing the agri-tourism sector. Host farms open their gates to share their agricultural experiences with their urban neighbours and to help them understand where their food comes from.

In 2020, more than 77 host farms were part of Open Farm Days, and 24 culinary events helped connect urban and rural Albertans.

Host farms have included traditional farms, livestock (bison, cattle, alpaca, sheep, llama, goat, poultry) farms and ranches, organic operations, corn mazes, wineries, meaderies, craft breweries, stables, petting zoos, along with honey, fruit, vegetable, grain and u-pick farms.

Since 2013, Open Farm Days has seen nearly 134,000 person visits, injecting close to one million dollars into the rural economy through on-farm sales. Since its launch, 711 Alberta farms have been enjoyed by the public.

Host farms can participate either day or both days, and educational materials about hosting are available.

If you can’t re-use or recycle it, take it to a Peace River Regional District landfill or waste transfer station for free during the PRRD Spring Clean-up!

Happening from May 31 to June 13 all tipping fees at the PRRD landfills and transfer stations will be waived for sorted waste and yard debris from your property.

The PRRD and the City of Dawson Creek are considering increasing the size of the fire protection area for the Dawson Creek Fire Department (DCFD).

Changes coming to Blackfoot Regional Park Blackfoot Regional Park has always been a great place to go to camp, picnic, and fish along the south bank of the Peace River at the historic Clayhurst Fery Crossing.

Charlie Lake Fire Department looking for recruits The Charlie Lake Fire Department is actively recruiting for volunteer firefighters.

In 2017 we asked residents how they would like to see Blackfoot Regional Park developed.

The response was that there should be more campsites, improved washrooms, an enhanced trail system and the ability reserve sites in advance.

Residents spoke, and the PRRD listened! The park has been undergoing improvements including a small trail system for walking and non-motorized use, new campsites with more power options, an on-site caretaker and general improvements to the roads and park infrastructure.

Paige the Preschool Puppet joins Rumble Alberta The Canadian Motorcycle Tourism Association (CMTA) is pleased to announce that Paige the Preschool Puppet will be joining the Social Media Influencer Team for this summer’s Rumble Alberta moto-tour event. Paige is an inquisitive pink puppet who loves to go on adventures, whether it’s through the pages of a book or venturing on the road for real life interactions.

After years of waiting for a starring role in a web show for preschoolers that never quite got off the ground, she recently decided to try her hand at hosting a YouTube commentary and review channel for preschoolers.

She’s looking forward to reviewing all the kid friendly spots on the Rumble routes.

Welcome to the team Paige! The main mission of this year’s Rumble Alberta road tour challenge event is to help with the economic recovery of outlying communities, charities, and rural businesses in Alberta. About the Peace River Forage Association The Peace River Forage Association was started in the summer of 1992. A research & development committee was formed and they developed the goals & objectives by which the Association operates today.

In 1994, Peace River Agriculture Strategic Planning Society funded the BC Forage Council / BC Ministry of Agriculture, Food & Fisheries forage varietals & cultivar trials through our association. This helped the association pinpoint various worthwhile forage activities that could be carried out to the economic benefit of the local farming and ranching sector.

Our history as an organization is a colourful one and worth a read when you have time.

This colorful history is documented in the Forage First newsletter archives.

In 1998, a comprehensive work plan was developed that defined a number of forage opportunities. This vision for the association’s ongoing projects was revisited, discussed and updated in 2000.

The Peace River Forage Association of BC began with a dozen committed individuals with a goal of having 100 members. Our association has surpassed that goal. As of November 2006, there were 100 members representing a broad range of areas in the BC Peace River region. It fluctuates from year to year but currently our mailing list of members and friends of forage totals close to 200.

Currently the PRFA of BC Board of Directors includes 7 directors, with 5 committee chairs.

We also have advisors from BC Ministry of Agriculture, Alberta Agriculture, Peace River Regional District and 5 part time, as needed forage contractors. Through funding for R&D projects, the forage association has hired energetic summer students and technicians.

Despite COVID restrictions, the six North Peace District 4-H Clubs are in full swing. Our volunteer leaders and District Council have put in many hours of discussion and effort to keep the kids participating in the usual activities, but in new ways.

Poultry, photography, honeybee, and gardening projects are ramping up with the coming of spring and members are looking forward to beginning these projects. Baby chicks have been ordered and we’re all hoping the snow is gone soon.

District Council is hoping for in-person achievement days but is also putting together plans for virtual achievement if necessary. There will be an on-line auction again this year, hopefully in conjunction with a live auction at the fair grounds. Kudos to all leaders and members of the District Council for their work and adjustments during this challenging time.

Wonowon 4-H Club Report Hi everyone ! I can’t believe it’s May already.

Sara and I are working with our 4-H animals more, but since there is NO show due to the stupid COVID rules, Sara and I are dropping all our females out. We are catching them almost every day.They are easy to catch and they love horse treats so that really quieted them down.

The last time the Wonowon 4-H steers were weighed, Sara’s steer (Big Red), my steer (Doc) and Rowdy’s steer (Mighty) all weighed over a 1,000 pounds. They are all good steers !

Too bad there is no show this year because it’s Rowdy’s first year in 4-H.But we will be having a sale and our sale is July 12, 2021 at VJV Dawson. It will be a online sale. There will be more info coming in the next few weeks so stay with us !

In our Beef meeting, we helped Rowdy fill out some of her beef record book, helped her learn how to fill out a judging card and the we did a word puzzle that had a secret massage. The secret massage was “Eat Canadian Beef More Often.”

Then a week later we had a club meeting and we helped the new members fill out judging cards, and we had an ID table with some equipment from all of our club projects: Beef, Honey Bees, Gardening, Chicken and Photography. Then we learned about three different types of soil and they were sand, clay and humus. Humus is the best for growing because it has lots of organic matter.
