Alberta is home to the largest beef breeding herd in Canada, is the leading beekeeping province and is a prime producer of dairy, hogs, poultry and bison.

‘Alberta’s agriculture industry makes significant contributions to its economy,’ notes Dr. Baljit Singh, dean of University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM). ‘Livestock producers need support for the management of their animals, especially in the area of disease surveillance and diagnostics.’

Alberta Agriculture and Forestry and the Canadian Agricultural Partnership is providing funds to UCVM for a pilot expansion of its diagnostic service unit (DSU) for enhanced animal disease diagnosis and welfare.

Singh says that this investment in DSU will directly help producers ensure the health of their animals and integrity of food supply chains.

The Alberta government ended comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services to the livestock industry in 1995.

Since then, private practitioners have been providing diagnostic services using a for-profit model.

This model has been successful for companion animals and to a lesser extent horses. However, the for-profit model is not economically viable for livestock production.

The lack of easily accessible and economical diagnostic service for the livestock industry has led to a gap in the knowledge of endemic and emerging livestock diseases at both the farm and provincial level.

‘While UCVM’s DSU has been operating for more than a decade, it has a limited capacity to serve Alberta’s livestock production industry,’ explains Singh. ‘This

project will increase capacity in disease diagnostics right here in Alberta for livestock producers.’

He says that the investment will allow UCVM to add one clinical microbiologist and one anatomic pathologist along with two technicians and one support staff to the existing team at the DSU. ‘We also will be able to purchase some new equipment to provide clinical microbiology expertise.

There is a provision in the grant to do some on-farm disease investigation as well.’

The pilot expansion is expected to start in October 2020.

Funding for this project was provided in part by the Governments of Canada and Alberta through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership under the Risk Management theme. In Alberta, the Canadian Agricultural Partnership represents a federalprovincial investment of $406 million in strategic programs and initiatives for the agricultural sector.

Additional funding was provided by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s Strategic Research and Development Program.

Breakfast Brief

TODAY’S WASDE REPORT: WHAT GRAIN MARKETS ARE WATCHING (FarmLead.com, Sept 18, 2020) Grain markets this morning are mostly in the green ahead of today’s monthly WASDE report, once that is largely going to be focused on demand. Supporting grain markets has been cooler temperatures, including a few nights of frost across the Canadian Prairies and U.S. Northern Plains. This has continued to support canola prices, helping more analyst join my timestamped call from a few weeks ago that cash canola prices are now more likely to get closer to $12 CAD/bushel, than unlikely.

Today’s WASDE Report Defined by Demand?

In fact, it’s been well-documented the commodity-buying binge that China is on, and nowhere is this more evident than records they’re smashing in grain shipments.

Between record soybean imports, record corn reserve sales, and high expectations for record corn and wheat imports, how the USDA pegs China’s grain demand in today’s WASDE report will be very closely watched.

More concretely, industry expectations are that we’re going to see more than 11 MMT of corn imported by China in 2020/21, but the USDA’s estimate in the August WASDE report was just 7 MMT. Keep in mind that the most bullish analysts think China’s corn imports number could finish as high as 25 MMT, due to the current low global prices, relative to the current near-record level of domestic corn prices in China. Inherently, there’s lots of buzz that this increase in Chinese demand for American corn could more than offset the drop in corn-for-ethanol demand, another line item that will be watched closely in today’s WASDE report.

Worth also mentioning is how Chinese wheat farmers aren’t selling to the government as they have willingly in the past, as they think wheat prices are going to rise, given the corn supply concerns. Staying in wheat, in today’s WASDE report, we’re likely to see higher production numbers from Russia, Australia, and Canada, whereas the EU, Ukraine, and Argentine wheat harvests are expected to fall.

The import profit margin remains strong, despite corn and soybean prices the last few weeks inching higher on ideas of a smaller U.S. harvest. After all, this week’s crop progress from the USDA shows that the corn and soybean crops are “stumbling to the finish line” as good-to-excellent (G/E) ratings for both fell 1 point from last week to 61% and 65%, respectively. Keep in mind that this is still marginally better than the 55% G/E rating that both corn and soybeans had at this time a year ago! Nonetheless, a U.S. corn crop of close to 15 billion bushels and 4.3 billion bushels of soybeans are expected to be shown in today’s WASDE report from the USDA.

Most analysts agree that the smaller American harvests are responsible for the drawdown in global ending stocks, but, given how close we are to harvesting said crops, a lot of the focus in today’s WASDE report is on the demand side of things. Contributing to this theory is the fact that we’re getting nearly daily reports from the USDA of export sales to China, including the largest one-day total in almost 2 months on Tuesday, as 664,000 MT were booked. Through yesterday’s UDSA export sales report, China’s new crop soybean purchases from America are good for an all-time high.

Arguably, the reason that China is buying more American is because they’ve been aggressively buying from Brazil, but not Brazil barely has any supplies left over and is literally going to have to import some soybeans, corn, and rice! That said, total soybean imports by China in the 2020 calendar year are up 15% year-over-year with 64.7 MMT imported thus far, but August’s imports did fall 5% from July as the pace of cargoes coming in from Brazil slowed. Nonetheless, as a bit of leading indicator into today’s WASDE report, the USDA attaché in China upped their estimate of soybean imports to 95 MMT (their previous estimate was 91 MMT), albeit this is still below the official USDA target of 99 MMT put out in last month’s WASDE report.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian 2020/21 soybean crop hasn’t even had a seed planted yet and still, the crop keeps getting bigger: A recent poll of analysts suggests that 131.7 MMT will be harvested. That’s a 4.5% jump from 2019/20’s (current record) soybean harvest of 126 MMT (as per the USDA) and up from the 130 MMT consensus previously estimated last month. It’s not hard to understand the planting decisions by Brazilian farmers to put in more soybeans, especially since soybean prices there Overall, grain markets continue to inch higher on the ideas of stronger demand narratives, albeit I continue to be cognizant of downside risk here as more of Harvest 2020 gets completed. In this vein, grain markets have pushed higher and if we don’t see enough numbers that support this bullish narrative – be it on the supply or demand side – we could see a pretty aggressive sell-off today. Put another way, if demand expectations are realized, it’ll likely be a quiet day (but keep in mind that rarely have we gotten a WASDE report without some fireworks in grain markets). As you’re in the combine over the next few days (or maybe weeks!), remember to keep tabs on what’s happening in cash grain markets on the Combyne grain marketplace platform.

Minimizing excessive pen dust - it’s uncompacted manure

Feedlot pen dust is the result of dry, uncompacted manure, including bedding and soil, being pulverized into a fine powder by livestock activity and then being kicked-up into the air by hoof action and wind. As warm, dry conditions reduce the manure’s moisture content, it becomes more susceptible to being broken down into fine particles.

The primary dust control method - reducing pen manure volume - is the most effective.

monitored and followed by the removal of any loose, un-compacted materials that accumulate over the summer.

‘Normally, we suggest that the best approach is to scrape the feedlots by the beginning of June,’ explains Trevor Wallace, nutrient management specialist with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘However, the rain this spring and summer has helped keep dust levels down. Regardless of the timing, the most effective first step at minimizing dust is

removing manure from the pens.’

Secondary dust control methods include applying water to pen surfaces and increasing stock density. These methods increase the moisture content of the manure, so it will not breakdown into a powder.

Wallace says that applying water is a secondary method of controlling dust because water application will not be effective at controlling dust if the water does not moisten the entire depth of manure.

‘Generally, when more than 2.5 cm of uncompacted manure is present in the pens, the volume of water required to penetrate the manure profile is significant and cannot be practically applied without creating a wet surface that can lead to pen floor damage and odour.’

The most common methods of applying water include the use of water trucks, solidset sprinkler systems and traveling gun watering systems.

‘Weather will impact the water application efficiency,’ he adds. ‘While it is more effective to apply water in the late afternoon, it may be too windy to do this properly. Alternatively, water applied in the morning or midday is wasted if evaporative demand is high.’

Increasing stock density helps increase pen moisture content by distributing manure and urine over a smaller area, which reduces the breakdown of manure into a fine powder.

He says that research suggests doubling the livestock density can reduce pen dust by up to 50%.

Evaluate your herd for body condition - check Bovine Lameness Dr. Charlotte Corbett As cows come home from pasture, it is the perfect time to evaluate your herd for body condition, how well your calves have grown, lameness and pregnancy. This is an excellent time to evaluate individual animals and decide whether or not they will stay in the herd. Evaluating hooves are important for individual animal decisions, as well as their offspring’s potential and the overall health of the herd. There are many causes for lameness in cattle: these are a few of the most common ones.

Sole problems are common, especially with cows on rough, rocky terrain. Bruises, ulcerations and abscesses can occur. The treatment for bruises and ulcerations is to remove the damaged tissue and keep the cow dry and clean – either on pasture or in a heavily bedded pen. The most common lameness in cattle are sole abscesses. Abscesses form when bacteria is able to get into the hoof from a defect in the protective hoof wall. The bacteria causes infection which increases pressure inside the hoof – this is the cause of the lameness. It is like hitting your fingernail with a hammer. The damage causes swelling below the fingernail. Releasing the pressure

relieves the pain. The same treatment applies to cows – digging out the abscess is the most effective way of treating the lameness.

Antibiotics will help but the abscess must be drained. Luckily, most of the time the abscess makes its own way out, bursting through the sole or coronary band. If left too long, the infection can spread to the joints and tendons.

It is common to see cracks in hooves. These cracks run horizontal (around the claw) or vertical (from coronary band to the ground).

Horizontal cracks are caused by systemic disease and are usually seen in dairy cattle who have been ill. Vertical cracks or “sand cracks” are caused by dry hooves. Hooves have a protective coating called periople that covers the hoof. When this layer is lost, the hoof dries out and damage occurs.

The periople is lost in two ways – from the environment, such as sandy soil wearing it off or from damage to the coronary band. Sand cracks themselves are not a problem, but they can become passageways for bacteria to get into the hoof.

Foot rot is a common term in the cattle business. Foot rot is caused by a bacteria that invades the soft tissue between the claws. Broken skin from trauma and wet conditions make it easy for the bacteria to get into the tissue. This condition is easy to treat if caught early – one dose of a penicillin or an oxytetracycline antibiotic. If the first treatment does not work, it is not foot rot!

Poor hooves can cause more severe problems than an abscess. When the infection spreads, it can eat away at the bone and the joints. The good thing about cows is that they have two toes, called claws. Claw amputation is a good way to salvage animals, whether it is a cow with calf at side or feedlot animals that aren’t quite market weight. The infected toe is removed, leaving the other toe to bear the weight. This procedure is done in bulls as well, but usually only in a front limb. Since bulls need to bear more weight on the hind limbs while breeding, most of the time they break down very quickly with only one toe on a hind limb. Most animals are culled, but some cows can raise more calves with no future problems.

Avoiding hoof problems can increase production, decrease veterinary treatment costs and keep your cows in your herd for more years. The main risk factors are genetic and environmental. Genetic causes include poor conformation of the legs and hooves as well as corkscrew hooves. Corkscrew hooves are twisted claws, usually seen in the hind limbs. This trait is genetic and can decrease the number of years a cow is in your herd as it predisposes them to lameness. Culling the offspring of these animals can improve the health of your herd in years to come as the condition is often passed down. Other factors include mud, wet conditions, nutrition, and trauma. There is only so much we can do about the rain, but bedding cattle in the winter and spring, keeping them away from equipment, and avoiding watering from dugouts can all help to keep them healthy. Regular hoof trims can also decrease the incidence of lameness in your herd. Cleaning corrals annually can decrease the mud and manure, especially important for wet springs. Pre-breeding vaccination with a foot rot vaccination called Fusoguard can be very beneficial, especially for bulls. A lame bull can have a huge impact on next year’s calf crop.

Especially with the wet weather we are having, hoof care is very important in your herd. “No hoof, no horse” is just as true in our cattle as well so take some time to check your cattle for lameness. Quick detection and treatment always has a better outcome.

When you make a promise - keep it Have you ever broken a promise? Do you break promises all the time? When you say you’re going to do something but don’t, is that breaking a promise? Do you rarely make a promise because you know they can be hard to keep? Do you only say you’re going to do something or make a promise then when will you keep it? If you don’t use the word “promise” in the sentence, is it still a promise?

What does it feel like when someone makes a promise to you and then breaks it? Do you promise this, that and the other thing because it seems to help in the moment? When you make a promise, do you do everything in your power to make it come true, no matter how difficult the situation might have changed for you?

I don’t think man nor beast likes to be promised anything unless they are going to get it. Don’t even mention it then if it happens, it can be a nice or not nice surprise. Some promises are easy to keep. I promise to drive you to town. I promise to mow the lawn. I promise to always do the right thing when I’m with my horse. Now the last one is a challenge to say the least. It would be a very noble and amazing feat to keep that promise.

I don’t think its possible to always do the right thing. You have to know what the right thing is for every horse in every moment then have the skill to get it done. I do, however, believe that we can become much better at doing the right thing and improve ourselves each day. I also believe that with selfdiscipline, knowledge and skill we can do the right thing most of the time but we are going to make some mistakes once in awhile.

I work at keeping three promises when I work with my horses: 1) building their confidence; 2) earning their respect; and 3) doing things in a manner they understand. That might sound straightforward but there is so much that goes

into keeping those promises. Every time I’m with a horse I ask myself if I’m keeping one or more of those three promises and helping the horse. In order to help, I have to correctly read what is going on with the horse. I have to know why is he doing or not doing something before I can possibly know how to help. If I read the “why” incorrectly then I don’t know whether he needs help with his confidence, respect or understanding. If I guess the “why” correctly, I now have a chance to be able to have the feel, timing and exercises that will help the situation.

If a horse is hard to catch, I will hear people say they chased him into a round pen using their quad or some other way then round penned him. Then they say he is still hard to catch even in the round pen. Hmmm, I wonder why? What does round penned it mean anyway? I have a round pen but it’s never been used to get a horse want to be caught. Why doesn’t he want to be caught is the question. The answer is he doesn’t like people or maybe, more to the point, it’s just that person he doesn’t like. The cure is to be the person that horses like. Chasing them around doesn’t make them like us. If you would like to have more friends don’t chase them into a round pen with your quad and then chase them some more around the pen.

If a horse goes into a trailer, it doesn’t necessarily mean their ready to even have the door closed behind them let alone be hauled anywhere. We need to read what the horse is saying and work towards build his confidence, respect and understanding.

We personally have to have confidence, respect and understanding to be able to help the horse with theirs. If your horse pulls back when tied or when you are handling him, you have to answer the “why” first. Remember, it is the release that teaches the horse. So,

do you release for the wrong things at the wrong time making or teaching by accident the very things you don’t want? When you ask your horse forward on a line and his head goes up, or when you get to the trailer and he pulls you across the yard or rears up, do you usually release all pressure from the horse making it comfortable for him to do the wrong thing? Instead, you should make the wrong thing uncomfortable and the right thing comfortable. If I had a dollar for every time I have seen people release the pressure and make the wrong thing easy for the horse, I would have a nice place in Costa Rica on the beach. If I read the situation incorrectly and/ or release for the wrong things at the wrong time, and I do it regularly, I’m promising through consistency to my horse, he can keep doing what it is he’s doing, and I will make it comfortable for him to continue doing it.

If we change for a better way, we need to keep the new promise for a while, maybe a long while, before they will trust in the new promise. If we slip back to the old way and release for the wrong thing, or read the situation incorrectly, or trailer them when they are not prepared then we lose what we were gaining. Therefore, we would be causing them to be less confident, respectful and understanding. Make some good promises to your horse. Keep those promises as much as you possibly know how and then be ready to be amazed at the horse that shows up.

Preparing farm youth for a safe harvest season During harvest, a lot of work needs to be done in a short amount of time. It is often during this busy time that priorities shift and safety can be compromised. Harvest is the peak season for agricultural-related injuries and fatalities according to Canadian Agricultural Injury Reporting.

Information from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety shows that new and young workers have a higher rate of injury on the job.

‘If you manage a workforce that involves youth, whether the workers are your children or not, it is up to you to ensure that everyone has the knowledge and skills to prevent injuries on the job,’ says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety coordinator at Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Always take the time to first go through the activity of training the youth, even if it feels repetitive or redundant. This will ensure they learn and practice the safest way to do the job.’

Lubeck offers these tips to help train young workers effectively: explain techniques that will make a task easier provide comprehensive training for

complex tasks such as equipment operation specify dos and do nots of safe equipment operation ensure appropriate warning decals are in place and understood by all workers identify hazards and show how to eliminate or control them once training is complete, monitor job performance to ensure your workers fully understand the job and are following all safety precautions provide information about equipment maintenance requirements and records provide proper and adequate supervision where needed For farms where very young children live, Lubeck recommends building a safe play area so children can play outside without the risk of being injured by harvest activities.

‘A safe play area is a carefully planned, designated location for children with limited exposure to hazards such as traffic, agricultural production equipment and environmental concerns. By designating a ‘hazard-free’ play area, you remove children

from the busy fast-paced work environment while allowing them to develop a sense of their own place of belonging on the farm.’

The safe play area should: be designated and reinforced by boundaries or physical barriers such as fences, gates or shrubs have competent supervision and always be within sight and sound of a responsible adult have safety rules for all children, including additional explanations for visitors and friends be away from vehicle traffic and other hazards, such as machinery or unstable structures be free from loud noises be free from open water and drowning hazards such as ponds, dugouts or ditches For more information about harvest safety tips please visit the Alberta Farm Safety Program.

Harvest signals the return of farm equipment on public roads how to use the equipment.

Farm machinery operators can make road travel safer for themselves and others by observing safety precautions. Travel at a speed that will allow the operator to maintain full control at all times.

‘Slow down when making turns or rounding curves,’ she adds. ‘If needed, pull over when there is a suitable area to allow backedup traffic to pass. Make sure the area is sufficiently wide and solid enough to handle the equipment.’

Once on a public road, obey all traffic laws and signs.

‘Always wear your seatbelt and use signal lights when turning. Never use a cell phone while transporting equipment. The distracted driving law - along with all other rules of the road - is in full effect while driving farm machinery on public roads and highways.’

Farmers should make sure their equipment is clearly visible, and it follows all regulated requirements for lighting and signage to avoid collisions between motorists and farm equipment.

‘This will ensure approaching traffic has time to react to a slow-moving vehicle. Use reflectors and reflective tape in the event that large equipment is required to travel in dim lighting conditions. You can purchase tape in kits or by the foot at local farm or hardware stores.’

‘The SMV sign must be properly mounted, clean and not faded. It must be positioned on the rear of the tractor or towed implement and clearly visible. SMV signs must be used on equipment travelling less than 40 km per hour.’

Farmers should check their route prior to starting out with farm equipment to be sure equipment will fit on all roads and bridges and that there are no low-hanging power lines along the route.

For the safety of all motorists, she highly recommends that farmers move equipment during high-visibility daylight hours and during periods of light traffic.

‘Avoid busy roads whenever possible, even if travel time will be longer. If your route takes you across a rural railway crossing, be aware that some crossings have poor visibility.

Always stop and make sure the way is clear before crossing.’

According to the Injury Prevention Centre, 23% of farm machine-related fatalities in Alberta are traffic-related, and most involve tractors.

‘During the busy fall season, farmers often travel long distances between fields,’ explains Kenda Lubeck, farm safety awareness coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry (AF).

‘This requires transporting equipment on roads throughout rural Alberta. Farm equipment is oversized and slow, compared to other vehicles using the roads. When certain procedures are not met, the risk of collisions and other incidents increases.’

Equipment maintenance is a contributing factor to the safety of transporting farm equipment. ‘Poor maintenance of equipment such as brakes or tires can lead to loss of control of the vehicle,’ she says.

Lubeck adds to check all tires for air pressure, cuts, bumps and tread wear.

‘Always lock brake pedals together for highway travel as sudden braking at high speeds on only one wheel could put the tractor into a dangerous skid. Equip heavy wagons with their own independent brakes.’

The number one cause of farm-related fatalities in Canada is machinery roll overs.

‘To minimize the risk of severe injury or death to the operator, all tractors need rollover protective structures (ROPS),’ she notes.

‘In addition, operators should always wear a seatbelt as ROPS are ineffective in a roll over without this restraining device.

Make PPE a habit and grab it Wearing personal protection equipment (PPE) is an important step to injury prevention for a wide range of farm work. Just like buckling a seatbelt before driving, reaching for PPE should be an automatic action prior to starting many jobs.

‘Hazards exist in many different forms on the farm workplace,’ says Kenda Lubeck, farm safety coordinator with Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. ‘Sometimes the hazards are obvious, such as a broken ladder or a rotating PTO shaft. But, what farm workers may be less likely to recognize are the hidden hazards, such as exposure to chemicals, dust or noise.’

If it is not possible to eliminate a hazard with engineering solutions,

or to minimize it with training and modified work practices, then reliance on PPE such as gloves, protective footwear, safety glasses, hearing protection and respirators is needed.

Expect, do not suggest It is up to managers, supervisors and parents to ensure that both new and experienced farm workers are trained in the proper use of PPE and that it is worn every time potential hazards are present. Wearing it should be an expectation of the job.

‘Decisions about protecting your hearing, eyesight and skin can have lifelong impacts - good or bad,’ she says. ‘Some exposures are cumulative. For example, each exposure to loud noise increases the risk of hearing loss, and nothing can reverse hearing loss once the damage is done. Other hazards are acute, causing damage immediately, such as chemical splashes to the eyes.’

Not only should farm workers be trained when to wear PPE, but they should also be shown how to achieve a proper fit. Respirators, hearing protection, safety goggles or helmets will not work properly if they do not fit correctly.

Role modeling – a powerful motivator When it comes to young farm workers, parents and supervisors play an important role in shaping attitudes about health and safety.

‘Leading by example and wearing PPE yourself, will greatly influence the likelihood of youth doing the same,’ she adds. ‘For example, when a child or youth sees someone they respect consistently wearing ear protection while mowing the lawn, they view that behavior as a necessary action to take when performing that task. This type of leadership helps build a positive culture of safety within the agriculture community that will hopefully continue for future generations.’

Consistently wearing PPE will help protect workers young and old from many health risks associated with working on the farm. Make it a habit and grab it!

The Horse Ranch gallops to digital in a COVID-19 world Tom Summer Renowned international horsemanship clinician Glenn Stewart is still hard at work on his ranch in Baldonnel, following his passion.

With more than 30 years of horse experience, Stewart conducts clinics worldwide and offers Horsemanship Camps varying in length from four days up to a month at his home The Horse Ranch.

With COVID-19 ever present in our new normal, Stewart says he’s focused much more on the digital and publishes training videos to members on the ranch’s private Facebook group.

“This spring when COVID hit and everything shut down, we finally got to some stuff that we’ve been talking about forever, but just never seem to have time for,” said Stewart. “So we stayed home and got our online courses going, the stages that we teach people.”

The ranch offers natural horsemanship training in ten stages, a methodology that teaches riders to build relationships with horses through understanding their psychology and nature.

Stewart says members have found the videos invaluable.

“They can do it with online lessons, so they can do it at home,” said Stewart. “It’s been a real bonus.”

Overseas clinics are still booked for Brazil and Costa Rica in January, says Stewart. This year was planned to be one of the busiest for the ranch.

Roughly 100 to 200 people attend the ranch every year for training, including returning students. The ranch is also on the hunt for an event planner, an office assistant, and a working student.

Stewart says the ranch continues to promote a sense of community for those with the right attitude.

“We take on anybody with a good attitude,” said Stewart. “If they’re hungry and interested, it doesn’t matter if they’ve had horse experience or not. Horse experience helps, but it’s not a dealbreaker at all.” tsummer@ahnfsj.ca

Inaugural meeting of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council The Honourable Marie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, participated in the inaugural meeting of the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council, where she invited the 25 members who were selected from over 800 applicants from across the country to share their perspectives on the future of the sector. As the whole government is working to develop a green economic recovery plan, Minister Bibeau wants young people to be able to share their aspirations.

Over the course of the meetings, their perspectives will help to articulate Canada’s vision and the

programs that will result from it, leading to a sustainable and prosperous agriculture and agrifood sector.

Protecting safety of agri-food workers with an Emergency Processing Fund The Emergency Processing Fund is focused on projects to help companies respond to the urgent health and safety needs of workers in agri-food sectors impacted by COVID-19, with an emphasis on supporting meat processing facilities.

Nationally, a total of 32 projects have been approved so far, for up to $10.54 million in funding. Funding has helped businesses purchase reusable PPE, sanitation stations and protective barriers, make adjustments to production lines to enable social distancing, develop additional training and adopt other measures that help safeguard employees from COVID-19. All remaining projects are

currently being assessed and will be finalized in the coming weeks.

Minister Bibeau made the announcement while visiting the Exceldor Cooperative plant that will receive up to $262,500 to purchase reusable personal protective equipment (PPE), and install equipment to ensure social distancing of staff at the facility.

The Government of Canada will continue working with food processors to ensure the well-being of essential workers in food processing plants across Canada while strengthening the resilience of our food supply chain.

History check - the grave of Ole Anderson This Point of Interest is the grave of Ole Anderson. Every small town has an eccentric and in Smith, Ole fit the bill. He and his father came to the area around 1919. They settled on a piece of land along the Lesser Slave River and became vegetable farmers. Ole would drive into town with an old horse hitched to a light wagon with two or three skinny dogs trailing behind and sell their vegetables to new arrivals.

Once his father passed away, Ole sold the horse and built a little cabin alongside the small lake south of town now known as Ole’s or Ollie’s ponds.

Every day he walked to town down the middle of the road. His gunny sack was tided with a rope and slung over his shoulder with his dogs trailing behind him.

His ‘cabins’ were built with materials he could scavenge along the way cardboard, cull lumber, used nails and the like. When one cabin became uninhabitable, he simply vacated it and built another.

He was dubbed “The Mayor of Smith” by the locals as mayors should be quite visible to the public and there was no doubt that Ole was about the most visible guy around with his shaggy beard, gunny sack and the clothes he wore until they plain wore out. His troupe of dogs added to overall visibility. Tourists encountering Ole often paid him a dollar or two simply to take his picture.

In the later years of his life he was talked into going to BC where he would be cared for. He passed away shortly thereafter. Local residents chipped in to bring Ole home, for his final rest and arrangements were made to transport his remains on the train and services were planned.

Along the way an avalanche blocked the tracks and the train carrying Ole could go no further. True to form as being a nonconformist and someone who liked to set his own rules, Ole missed his own funeral.

Effective Dec. 1, 2020, all slaughter activity licensed under the Meat Inspection Regulation for Class, A, B, D and E meat slaughter licences will now be regulated under the Ministry DVERTISE of Agriculture.

Previously, WITH THE regional health authorities had responsibility for Class D and E licences.

The intentions paper was government’s response to concerns heard during ALR engagement sessions in fall 2019. Both the public and stakeholders stated more options for small additional residences were needed.

The paper outlined policy options under consideration for small additional residences that continue to maintain government’s core objectives under the Agricultural Land Commission Act. These policy options preserve and encourage the use of ALR land for agriculture.

To allow time for the development of new regulations, the grandfathering period for manufactured homes in the ALR is being extended to July 31, 2021. Landowners in the ALR will have until then to obtain the required permits and authorizations to place a manufactured additional residence for immediate family on their property, without having to apply to the Agricultural Land Commission.

The ministry is working to develop regulatory changes that are consistent with the intentions paper.
