After four days on the run to evade police, double murder suspect Unangoni Salathi (35) was this week finally arrested and arraigned before Francistown Chief Magistrate Game Mooketsi on Wednesday for killing his two children aged three years and 11 months.
Salathi allegedly silt three-yearold Loapi Enias and 11-monthold Sesto Enias with a sharp object at their rented home in Monarch on Saturday, while the mother of the two children was on errands in town. After ruthlessly ending the innocent lives of the children, Salathi fled the scene. Only for the mother to return and stumble on the lifeless bodies of her children in pools of blood. Salathi, who comes from Matobo village was brought to court under heavy escort on Wednesday morning where he was not asked to plead.
“We plead with the court to have the accused remanded in custody, as investigations are still fresh. The suspect was only apprehended yesterday. And the Investigating Officer is not present, as he is attending to the post-mortem proceedings,” explained Prosecutor Ditshotlo Mpale. Salathi returns to court next week on Thursday.
Since Saturday police officers from Central Police station and residents of Monarch mounted an intense search for a 35-yearold former security guard and insurance consultant. According to Central Police Station Commander Superintendent Mogomotsi Kesupile, Salathi was arrested in Makuta, a few kilometres from his home village of Matobo.
“The suspect was arrested by residents of Makuta, who suspected he was a criminal. He
was detained by the villagers around 01:00 in the morning and was then handed to the police officer at the local police post where he was kept in the cell. In the morning the suspect was handed over to Tutume police,” explained Kesupile.
Superintendent Kesupile applauded the residents of Makuta for their swift action in detaining Salathi, who had been on the run since Saturday.
Meanwhile, a resident of Makuta who requested to remain anonymous narrated how Salathi was apprehended.
“He was found seated next to a fire in one of the homesteads of Makuta. He was warming himself. When he saw a group of men approaching the yard, the suspect got up and tried to flee, but the men caught him and questioned him. He mumbled senseless stories, and that is how they suspected he
was a thief,” narrated the middle-aged man.
“It seems the suspect had been

Women have been implored to step up and take part in addressing issues of gender inequality and disparity which prevails at all levels particularly in the po-
litical system.
This was said by Valencia Mogege, a facilitator during a two day women in politics workshop training held in Maun this week who reminded women that the political system at the
end of the day controls decision making of the country.
Organized by the Department of Gender Affairs in collaboration with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the training aimed at strengthening women in politics and capacitating aspirants to be effective leaders and mediators.
Mogege implored women to step up and address issues of gender inequality and low women representation in decision making positions which is a major global concern. She further encouraged them to use their numbers to achieve the desired participation and representation in politics emphasizing the need for policies that priorities women’s interests for them to be adequately represented when decisions are made.
Mogege lamented that the 2019 general elections evaluation report showed that women constituted 67% of the voting population but only three were voted into Parliament. “We need to confront our reality because we have the numbers and yet we cannot support other women. If we fail to push for equality it will limit our capacities and women will continue to be
abused,” she said.
For his part, North West District senior gender officer, Felix Mapeu stated that it is imperative for women to get empowered on issues of women politics and women leadership. According to him, women are unable to penetrate through the political arena due to lack of information, hence their empowerment on issues of decision making and politics is crucial.
Mapeu have since pledged to
equip the women with knowledge ahead of this year’s general elections to make decisions from an informed position.
He stated that globally, only four countries have achieved more than 50 percent of women representation in parliament while in Botswana, their representation is at 11%, putting the country at 162 out of 195 countries globally.
In her deliberation, United Nations Development Programme
facilitator also Botswana
ples Party Publicity Secretary, Nono
reiterated that women participation in Botswana politics is very limited. Mokoka emphasized there need for women to change their mindsets and start doing things differently by supporting each other to push for balance in attaining gender equality in political leadership and representation at every level.

Botswana Congress Party (BCP) secretary general, Goretetse Kekgonegile says the party’s annual conference billed for Maun during these coming holidays will focus more on intensifying the party’s readiness for the upcoming general elections.
Preceding the general elections which are to be held in about three months’ time, Kekgonegile told this publication that the conference will be more of a political program than the annual organisational checks and balances.
He indicated that the theme of the event, ‘‘Enough is enough; Save Botswana,’’ emphasises their goal to remove the ruling party from government by targeting 31 constituencies which they believe will give them power.
The conference will kick off on Friday with workshops for around 500 council candidates from across the country focusing on electioneering as the party’s campaign strategy as well as its target at ward level in different constituencies. This as the party has already held the same workshops for parliamentary candidates.
Upon completion of the conference on Monday afternoon, the
party will invade Maun staging various political activities including rallies in different areas.
Forming part of this, Kekgonegile added that they will also hold social responsibility initiatives in terms of clean up campaigns and other projects specific to households.
As for the conference itself, the SG indicated that they are expecting around 1500 delegates to descend into Maun with the official opening happening on Sunday morning followed by various reports in the afternoon. On Monday the delegates will break into commissions for discussions and resolutions formation before the conference ends in afternoon.
“Our general preparations for the elections I believe we are doing very well, the conference’s theme is based on the intention of the BCP to take power through targeting of 31 constituencies that we believe will give us power,” he reiterated. In terms of how they are progressing ahead of the elections, the Maun East MP stressed, “we believe that we are within our target, the worst scenario will be a hung parliament but we believe within that, the BCP stand chance to lead the opposition government.”

Maun police last week conducted a drug raid campaign which targeted suspected hotspots in and around Maun, which resulted in the filing of three cases involving marijuana possession.
According to Maun Police station commander superintendent Dennis Zilawe, the first case involved a 48-year-old man who was apprehended in possession of five sachets of a substance suspected to be marijuana in his pockets. A further search of the man’s residence allegedly revealed a two-liter bottle containing marijuana. Additionally, the authorities found meat in the suspect’s fridge, which is alleged to be that of a warthog carcass.
Superintendent Zilawe stated, “The man is in custody as we
conduct tests on the substances to determine their nature and confirm whether the meat is indeed from a warthog.”
If the tests confirm the substances as marijuana and the meat as warthog, the man will face charges of illegal possession of marijuana and possession of game meat.
The second case involved a 19-year-old male in Botshabelo, who upon being searched at his house, the police discovered a toolbox allegedly containing a substance suspected to be marijuana.
“The substances are still undergoing testing,” Zilawe noted. “If confirmed as marijuana, the man will face charges of illegal possession of drugs.”
In the third case, a couple of a
27-year-old man and a 24-yearold woman - were allegedly found with three sachets of marijuana hidden in a pillowcase in Sanyedi. The substances were seized for testing, and if confirmed to be marijuana, the couple could be charged with illegal possession of the drug.
Zilawe emphasised that the raid was part of a concerted effort by the Maun Police to crack down on illegal drug possession.
“This operation is the result of hard work and collaboration among various police units,” he said.
Zilawe also highlighted a disturbing trend, noting that young people are frequently found in possession of illegal drugs. He urged the youth to refrain from drug use and unlawful possession, stress-
ing the importance of understanding that marijuana is illegal under Botswana’s constitution.
“Marijuana has significant impacts on the psyche of users and can lead to temporary psychosis and other health issues,” he warned. He appealed to the public to abstain from using marijuana, citing its potential to impair workplace performance and mental health. He also called for community cooperation in the fight against drugs.
“We urge the public to share any information regarding locations that may be involved in the possession or sale of illegal drugs,” Zilawe said. “The Maun Police are committed to working hard in this fight against drugs.”
A prosecutor in the cases in which a former soldier Simba Mooketsi Mampori is accused of killing four of his former girlfriends in 2016, 2018, and 2019 has told the Francistown High Court that one of the files has not been traced.
This as the accused appeared before Francistown High Court for a status hearing.
The 36-year-old man from Mbalambi, who has been incarcerated since his arrest in 2019, is yet to be tried for two of the four murder cases he is linked to. Five years since the demise of his victims, trial in two of the cases has not yet commenced.
Appearing before Judge Bashi
Moesi, the Prosecutor handling Mampori’s case told the court that while efforts have been made, the missing file has still not been traced yet.
“I have made efforts to have the file in question traced as far as Lobatse High Court. But all this has been in vain. The file cannot be found. However, I have resubmitted the necessary documents for the case in question to the DPP. Hopefully in our next status meeting will have made progress”, indicated the prosecutor. The matter returns to court in September this year.
Mampori burst into the limelight in 2019, when he was arrested by the police in Thamaga for reck-
less driving. Upon being apprehended, police noticed bruises around his neck, and upon further probing after being treated at Thamaga primary hospital, the former soldier, gave the cops his mother’s cellphone number and keys to his sister’s rented house in Bontleng. He then led the police to a house, where they found the body of 34-year-old Matlhogonolo Mashashu, his girlfriend and mother to their two-year-old daughter, in a pool of blood. A screwdriver was next to her lifeless body and scribbling written in blood on the wall of the room. “Ke lapisiswe ke maaka” (I am tired of lies). Investigations reveal that Mamp-
ori had tried to end his life, by hanging himself. Only for the rope to snap leaving him with a bruised neck and braising on his body. With a botched suicide, Mampori is said to have recklessly driven his car, hoping to cause an accident and die. Five days earlier Mampori is alleged to have stabbed to death a 39-year-old woman also believed to be his lover. The woman is said to be from Molepolole. At the time of committing the above murder, Mampori was on bail for a 2016 murder in Mahalapye and a 2017 killing in Gaborone, both involving women. The two murder cases cost Mampori his job in the army.

Onalethuso Petruss Buyile, popularly known as Mambo Ntema from Matsaudi village in Botswana’s North West district, has dropped his fourth album titled “Wrong Man.”
Ntema, a versatile musician, revealed that the album comprises 15 songs, each filled with rhythmic punchlines, powerful imagery, and melodious flows. The album starts with an engaging intro in Maun lingo, transitions into a hardcore musical interlude inspired by the Shiyeyi language, and concludes with a captivating outro.
“This time I am coming with a different energy,” Ntema shared. “I am here to share the raw truth and inspire social change by addressing the social ills plaguing our nation. Wrong Man is about breaking the mould and highlighting issues caused by toxic masculinity. I hope to leave listeners inspired to make changes in their society. I am sharing my fiery side because this is how deeply I feel about the extent to which these issues have rooted in our society.”
The title track, Wrong Man, serves as a social commentary on gender vulnerabilities and gender-based violence (GBV). Other tracks, like What a World, discuss global crises such as political instability, war, disease, and economic downturns.
One standout track, Hustlers
Anthem, promotes the spirit of self-reliance and teamwork and features 17 artists, including Bigg Skull, Norris Chisadza (Zimbabwe), and Zeus Deuce amongst a few. These featured artists, hailing from Maun, Shakawe-USA, Kasane, and Zimbabwe, have already made waves with the anthem playing on RB2’s “Dancehall Madness” with Selectah Dimo.
Ntema’s musical journey began humbly around 24 years ago during his senior school days in Maun. Inspired by the vibrant art scene in Maun, which included talents like HT Tautona and legendary artists like Bob Marley, Ntema developed his signature dancehall sound. His debut album Stranger, blended hardcore and melodious sounds, followed by Mpambo, which explored themes of love and affection. His third album, ‘Mmamosadiachipi’, celebrated the beauty and strength of women. With Wrong Man, Ntema returns to his edgy dancehall roots.
“Dancehall is confrontational and youthful, like hip-hop. It demands instant change. This genre connects with my spirit and can express both the inner rage and beauty I carry within,” Ntema stated. Looking ahead, Ntema plans to release merchandise related to the new album. He will premiere the album next week at Back Alley Restaurant in Kasane, with another

The paramount Chief of the Basubiya (Veekuhane) tribe in Botswana, Kgosi Munitenge Lawrence Maeba Sinvula III’s vision for the preservation of his tribe’s cultural heritage while making economic gains has been realised through a partnership with Chobe Game Lodge in the establishment of a cultural museum in Kavimba.
Kgosi Sinvula III, ascended to the throne three years ago and one of
his wishes was for the restoration of the Basubiya culture, which had over the years been eroded. This restoration, he said would only be meaningful if it were to benefit the tribe and improve their livelihoods, especially in the tourism-bustling region of Chobe. This was as he noted tourists were becoming more into learning about the cultural practices as compared to wildlife alone.
That is how the idea of a museum – that would showcase the cultural
heritage of Basubiya or Veekuhane –as they call themselves, was born. According to Kgosi Sinvula III, such a museum would then help the younger and future generations learn about their culture while at the same time tapping into the largely unexplored cultural tourism space for financial benefits.
The tribal leader, armed with the idea soon realised that the initiative needed funding to materialise.
Chobe Game Lodge came to his mind, for he knew how the Lodge

was very much involved in community development in the Chobe for the decades it has been operating in the area.
“I approached Chobe Game Lodge with the idea, and sought their help to realise this vision, by assisting in the refurbishment of the old shelter in the Kgotla into a museum. Chobe Game Lodge acceded to my request.”
He said Chobe Game Lodge further committed, that once the museum became operational, they would also bring their clients to learn about the Basubiya culture.
This agreement between Kgosi Sinvula III and Chobe Game Lodge would set the stage for one of the ground-breaking self-initiated cultural heritage preservation projects, that is also geared towards value chain development in the tourism industry.
The refurbishment of the structure has been completed, and stands on the grounds of Kavimba Kgotla, while the process to source Basubiya artefacts for display in the museum is ongoing.
Sourcing the artefacts, according to Kgosi Sinvula III has been another challenge the project faced.
“We came to learn that there were not so many of these artefacts out there, and whatever was available
was up for sale. Faced with the challenge of funds to buy these artefacts, we approached Chobe Game Lodge again for assistance,” he said.
Chobe Game Lodge has since provided funding for the sourcing of the needed artefacts for the Veekuhane Cultural Museum which is currently ongoing.
A visibly elated Kgosi Sinvula shared that plans are at an advanced stage to have the museum officially opened in September during the celebration of the Veekuhane annual Cisiya Nkulu cultural festival in Kavimba. The museum will serve as a launching pad for cultural education – to the younger Veekuhane generations in both Botswana and Namibia where the tribe is found, as well as at a national level. Tourists will be among the biggest clients of the museum – this is as Kavimba lies on a transit road for self-drive tourists between the renowned Moremi Game Reserve and the Chobe National Park. Chobe as a tourism destination of note, attracts hundreds of thousands in tourist arrivals, who with arrangements with their hosts, like Chobe Game Lodge can visit the museum to learn the Veekuhane Culture.

Generally, Maun International Airport primarily served domestic flights within Botswana and regional flights to neighbouring countries such as South Africa and Namibia rather than international flights. Air Botswana and Airlink were primarily the main airlines flying in and outside Maun Airport. However, there is change such that international airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines and Flying Namibia have started to fly into Maun. What it means is that the time has come for Maun International Airport to have the necessary facilities and services that match international standards and needs of tourists who pass through the airport. We should recognise that some of the tourists that pass through Maun International Airport need top of the class facilities and services such as up-market lounges, restaurants and shopping facilities at the airport.
The arrival of Ethiopian Airlines, Fly Namibia, Airlink and several chartered airlines suggests that Maun International Airport is not just an ordinary and simple airport. Maun Airport is a bustling hub during the peak tourist season (from May to October), when travellers from around the world arrive to explore the Okavango Delta and other nearby wildlife reserves.
The airport plays a critical role in facilitating tourism activities that contribute significantly to the local economy. The strategic location of Maun Airport provides convenient access to the Okavango Delta, one of the world’s most renowned wilderness areas. In this regard, Maun International Airport serves as a crucial gateway to the Okavango Delta and the broader northern Botswana region, playing a pivotal role in supporting tourism and local economic activities.
While Maun Airport receives a significant number of tourists from all over the world, the airport typically does not offer dedicated lounges operated by airlines or independent operators. Passengers usually wait in the general seating areas before boarding their flights. While efforts are made to provide a comfortable environment for travellers, amenities are basic compared to larger international airports.
This includes limited shopping options and no dedicated business or VIP lounges. Depending on the season and traffic, some tour operators or lodges have come to set up temporary lounges or waiting areas for their guests, especially during peak tourist seasons. Maun Airport does not have
permanent airport lounges that provide a more comfortable waiting space for visitors. There have been discussions and plans in recent years to expand and improve facilities at Maun Airport to accommodate increasing tourism demand. If provides, this may include enhanced passenger amenities in the future.
In tourism, we sell a total experience of a destination. In this regard, selling a destination as a tourism product is critical and those in power and decision makers should understand this and make sure that the necessary services are provided at Maun International Airport. Selling the experience of the Okavango Delta involves highlighting its unique qualities and offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves fully in its natural beauty and wildlife. Selling the experience of the Okavango Delta involves not just promoting the Okavango Delta as a destination but as a transformative journey where visitors can connect with nature, wildlife, enjoy airport facilities and services as well as local culture in a profound and memorable way. Selling an experience suggests that tourists should enjoy various activities and services provided in an airport, interactions with locals, cultural immersion, unique landscapes, culinary delights, and more. The goal is to create lasting memories and emotional connections for the traveller, making their trip more meaningful and fulfilling beyond basic sightseeing. This approach often leads to higher satisfaction levels and repeat business from tourists seeking immersive and enriching experiences. The current state of Maun Airport thus denies international tourists the needed services which they enjoy in other international airports. This as a result, also robs the country of the necessary revenue generation which would otherwise contribute to both the domestic and national economy. Our leaders should appreciate that selling the experience of the Okavango Delta involves highlighting its unique qualities and offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves fully in its natural beauty and wildlife and that of enjoy services not only at Maun International Airport but the local culture as well especially that of Maun.

Results are beginning to show from an initiative established in 2014 by Communities Living Among Wildlife Sustainably (CLAWS) whose mission was to develop innovative initiatives to promote human-wildlife coexistence. This is as signs of peaceful co-existence between pastoral farmers in the Eastern Panhandle of the Okavango Delta and predators, especially lions are beginning to show. As a consequence, statistics of poisoning of lions and other predators which have always led to collateral damage in the deaths of vultures are said to have greatly decreased. The program called Pride in Our Prides (PiOP) is an initiative that engages local communities in lion conservation by using technology

to track satellite-collared lions. The collars’ GPS positions are linked to this early-warning system, providing automated real-time alerts to farmers when collared lions approach.
After receiving a lion alert, a Lion Response Team (LRT) which is supported by village volunteers, is then able to intercept the lions, using deterrents to encourage them to retreat to safer areas.
This was revealed by CLAWS Lion progam coordinator Virginia Pelayo in an interview emphasising that Lion killing due to human-lion conflict has dropped from over 25 lions in 2013 to fewer than three per year across the region since 2016, with the exception of 2022 where 10 were killed as a result of human-lion conflict.
“In 2023 we had 1 poisoning event
in September, no lions were killed though they were the target, but 45 vultures were killed due to it, 2 lions shot in 2023 and no lions were killed by humans in 2024 so far,” Pelayo said.
Pelayo highlighted that they have seen a significant increase in the proportion of alerts attended by their LRT, as well as the number of conflicts averted and total distance lions moved away after deterrents. She emphasised that this has a positive impact on mitigating human-lion conflicts and reducing lion mortality.
“Our Lion Alert System counts now on more than 300 people that signed up to receive lion alerts and we currently count on 36 geo-fences thus virtual fences of 5 km radius for villages and 3 km for cattle posts. We have by far and we’ve

The lion program coordinator noted that they are working with 5 partner villages mainly Seronga, Gunotsoga, Eretsha, Beetsha, and Gudigwa with 7 collared lions 4 males and 3 females which are mostly in NG12, adding that plans are underway to collar 6 more lions. She emphasised that they do not collar all lions, but rather try to find a conflict or potentially conflict lions, as well as dispersal males. Plans are underway by the Civil Aviation Authority of Botswana (CAAB) to establish a lounge and another high-end one within the Maun International Airport as part of the organisation’s efforts to enhance the experience of passengers using the facility.
With the airport being one of the busiest in Southern Africa and also a gateway to the most sought after prestigious Okavango Delta, the authority has decided to bring befitting amenities that will cater to its clients, including the most discerning travellers or tourists.
Amid the current constraints the
airport has such as a runway that is not strong enough as well as an inadequate terminal building,
CAAB’s Director of Airport Services, Isaac Mabote says they however want to be creative and see how they can improve the value chain of their services at the facility.
“We are looking at any other means that the passenger experience can be enhanced at the Maun International Airport simply because people who go through this airport have been through airports that are of high standards so we do not want them to come here and find the standards lowered. Let’s look at the airport and see how much we can do to improve the amenities
here,” the director said this during a media tour of the airport recently. He indicated that the old Puma building is being converted into a VVIP lounge with a section meant to exclusively cater for the President during his/her visit to Maun while the other will be for those with spending power.
“When the president is in Maun it is a serious headache for the airport manager to host him because there is no such space suitable for that,” Mabote stated.
As for other VVIPs he indicated, “Some of these wealthy people come with their aircrafts, some come flying business class from London into SA and to Maun and

when they arrive here there is nothing first class about whatever they can do in our airport.” He stressed that the VVIP lounge will ensure that the whole value chain of services provided to such people is fulfilled.
Furthermore, Mabote indicated that the current restaurant at the airport is also being converted into a lounge which will be open for everyone affording to use it.
“When you run an airport the most important thing that you need to focus on is the passenger experience.
Passenger facilitation at check in points should be faster but during
their layover time if nothing is keeping them engaged that can be a concern, so to address that there is need to try and bring amenities into the airports such as restaurants, lounges, and shops.”
The Maun airport already has other niceties such as a snack bar with a duty-free shop at the international departure hall which CAAB is providing to enhance customers experience. Other concessions available at the airport include those for internet, catering, retail, advertising, and car parking which the organisation has since urged people to take advantage of.

Its CEO and co-founder, Dr Jana Lackey says though the Centre was meant to be a short term care facility for the children, they however have some who have been placed at the facility for many years with their cases still pending.
Lackey said though Lorato House is a wonderful environment and place but she advises that no child should live in such an institution for long term hence they are hoping for more children to be adopted into a save and loving family setup.
“We don’t want children to stay indefinitely at the house and also for them to be adopted into another institution but rather for them to be adopted into families,” she said stressing that the facility was meant to be a revolving door where children comes and goes.
Having started with few numbers, Lackey indicated that now there are around 150 children who come through Lorato House with some staying there for a long time because there is no alternative for them to go, but some are rejoined with their families while others are adopted into Batswana homes.
“Right now the numbers have grown, we have doubled in the past year and half. We believe Covid19 has also contributed to some of these kids coming here because of the economic hardships that fami-
Meanwhile Lackey has called for more support noting that it takes a lot to maintain the children and keep them strong. Her wish is for the Ministry of Health to step in and do more as the children could otherwise be living in hospitals which is very expensive to maintain.
“Lorato House is supported by individuals, there is no big cash cow in America, we getting little that we can, DSP support us with 29% of our budget. We appreciate companies like Dawn Pharmacy because everything they support us with is equal to what it takes for us to make it months to months,” she appreciated.
This as the pharmacy on Wednesday donated some medical items, toiletries, nappies, first aid items among others all worth P12 000, as part of its 3rd anniversary celebration. The pharmacy also gave some branded T-shirts to the staff of Lorato House in recognition and appreciation of the good work they are doing in taking care of the children.
Dawn Pharmacy’s managing director, Mavis Gaolebe said they found it fit to give back to the community that continues to support them and have made the pharmacy to grow and be able to penetrate the pharmaceutical industry and present itself as one of the best in Maun.

was filmed crossing the Kazinga Channel in Uganda at night using high-definition heat detection cameras on drones.
After two failed attempts, the pair swam about 1.5km to make it across the channel.
One half of the duo was a 10-year-old local icon known as Jacob, who has survived several life-threatening incidents including the severing of one of his hind legs in a poacher’s snare.
Griffith University’s Dr Alexander Braczkowski, who led the research, said Jacob “really is a cat with nine lives”.
“I’d bet all my belongings that we are looking at Africa’s most resilient lion: he has been gored by a buffalo, his family was poisoned for lion body part trade, he was caught in a poacher’s snare, and finally lost his leg in another attempted poaching incident where he was caught in a steel trap,” he said.
Braczkowski said the fact Jacob and his brother Tibu had managed to survive as long as they have in a national park under significant human pressures – including from high poaching rates – was a feat in itself.
Braczkowski’s research has found the population in the park has halved in the past five years due to a range of factors. They include several
human-caused catastrophes – poisoning by poachers and electrocution on a fence in the park among them.
He said the impact had been particularly severe for the park’s female lions.
“This population is skewing two males to one female and that’s the reason we suspect these lions have swum across the Kazinga Channel – because they’re searching for females,” he said.
He said it was “just sad” the animals were being pushed in this way by pressures created by humans.
Braczkowski’s team included South African film-maker Luke Ochse and field coordinators Bosco Atukwatse, from Uganda, and Orin Cornille, from Belgium. Scientists from Griffith University and Northern Arizona University worked on the research.
“Competition for lionesses in the park is fierce and they lost a fight for female affection in the hours leading up to the swim, so it’s likely the duo mounted the risky journey to get to the females on the other side of the channel,” Braczkowski said.
“There is a small connecting bridge to the other side but the presence of people was probably a deterrent for them.” https://www.theguardian. com/

After realising that there was a need to impact young golfers in Africa looking for a breakthrough in golf, a 29-year-old Motswana lady Ouname Mhotsha started a project dubbed Thanya Monana Through the project, Mhotsha who is a Professional Golfer based at Cedar Crest Golf Course in Dallas, Texas, US, wants to impact young golfers from Africa. This will also cater to those who lack information on the available opportunities within the sport. The project was fully established in February 2023, but before its establishment, Mhotsha had in
2021 hosted a mentorship program that was aimed at assisting young African golfers including Batswana to learn how to utilise their golf talent to access academic and professional development opportunities.
In an interview, Mhotsha said the project initially started as an idea to give back to the younger generation of golfers in Botswana and Africa. She said that through the project she intends to leverage learnt lessons and experiences from her journey to assist other young golfers while also empowering them to assist those that will come after them. She said this would create a ripple effect that can put African golfers in a better
position to leverage the opportunities within the sport of golf. Another objective was to raise awareness about business and career development opportunities for young people who are non-golfers and entrepreneurs so they too can contribute towards the growth of golf in their countries.
“Additionally, we want to contribute to youth development and reduce youth unemployment by creating opportunities for young people to collaborate and leverage business relationships in the golf industry through our events such as the Ouname Mhotsha Fundraising Golf Day coming up on August 22, 2024,” she said.
Taking Times Sport on her journey in golf, Mhotsha noted that she started playing golf at the tender age of seven, and luckily, she comes from a golfing family so having access to the sport was not a struggle. However, she said that it was challenging to advance in the sport because there were no structures in place to accelerate her journey. Mhotsha had to find career advancement opportunities and that meant her golf journey took longer than the average journey to reap full benefits from the sport in terms of financial gain and sports performance.
Mhotsha has further indicated that the participation of young
women in the sport of golf in Botswana has grown over the past 5-10 years. She said that they have seen more young girls take up the sport with great support from their parents and national sports governing bodies.
“We recently had our first junior girls’ national team compete in an All Africa tournament, which is a good sign that we are heading in the right direction. We have also seen an increase in new lady golfers who use the sport for leisure and business networking.
I believe we are making progress but more still needs to be done to attract more young girls and more women as well as to retain the current crop of girls and
women that have taken interest in the sport,” she said. She has revealed that they are currently receiving support from the International Olympics Committee Young Leaders Program through seed funding and skills development to enable them to execute impactful and sustainable projects.
“The Thanya Monana Project is an initiative under the Ouname Mhotshwa Foundation and the inspiration to move from a small mentorship project to include other parts of the project is to leave a legacy and to show appreciation to a sport that has given me so much throughout my lifetime,” she said.

This past weekend, the Lucara Botswana Netball League concluded with the finals in Orapa, with first-time entrants, Maun Heroes, making a remarkable debut and showing immense potential for future success.
Maun Heroes women’s team finished 5th out of 18 teams, while the men’s team secured the 6th position out of ten after qualifying from the regional to the Lucara Botswana Netball league finals. The women’s team faced Jwaneng United Netball in their first game and lost 82 to 15.
However, they bounced back with a victory against Nico United Netball, winning 49 to 32, before losing their final game to Police with a score of 49 to 32. The men’s team, despite losing all their games, demonstrated determination and potential, especially in their last match.
Mokeresete Mokeresete, the public relations officer of Maun Heroes, expressed pride in the team’s achievements. “What we have achieved as a club is nothing short of a historical feat. We started our club in April last year, and now we have managed to reach the national finals. This is
the first time a North West Netball team has made it this far.”
Mokeresete praised the teams’ efforts, stating, “Despite our challenges, I think we have done well. I’d like to commend their efforts as they have shown sportsmanship and a competitive spirit that is core to our club.”
Standout performers from the women’s team included Shelia Tsetse, Patronella Thapi, and Grace Molatlhiwa, who were instrumental in their advancement to the national under-21 team. On the men’s side, Innocent Chawe emerged as a standout defensive player, with Mokeresete believ-

ing he might be Botswana’s best defensive player. Another notable player, Nametsegang Barutegi, who started playing in March, showed significant improvement and advanced quickly.
Mokeresete highlighted the club’s challenges, revealing, “We have come this far with what we have but face serious issues such as lack of resources, transport, and food for the players. We appeal to the community for sponsorship to help our players develop and have a fair chance at playing the sport. With enough resources, I believe we could dominate the sport nationally.”
Maun Heroes officially started in April last year, forming both women’s and men’s teams, primarily comprising young talent, with most women’s team members under the age of 21. Their historic feat of reaching the national league finals and battling to the end has become the club’s identity.
Mokeresete expressed his gratitude to the players and coaches, stating, “I am very thankful for the sacrifices all the players and coaches have made. Their dedication to the sport is a testament to their character and has set the groundwork for the team to grow
to greater heights.”
Looking ahead, Mokeresete revealed plans to start a regional competition called MAUN Netball Club, which he hopes will be held annually beginning this December, fostering growth and recruitment of new players through trials involving other villages such as Gumare.
“We want the club and sport to grow in this area as I think there is a lot of talent that has been overlooked and not given the opportunity. I believe this is the start and a pointer of bigger and better things to come.” Mokeresete concluded.
