Just a good ol’ boy and his dog Two weeks ago today the world said farewell to a likeable, hard-working country boy by the name of Barney Odom.

If you recognize the name, chances are it’s because you remember his unusually talented pet – a mixed breed dog named of Flatnose whose penchant for climbing trees put the pooch and its owner in the national global spotlight.

“The Lord has something to do with this dog,” was the only way Barney could explain the extraordinary gift his dog possessed.

The dog first caught the attention of locals in Barney’s hometown of Dovesville, a tiny, laid back Darlington County community with a population of just over 500 residents. Before long the TV news reporters caught wind of Barney and his tree-climbing dog. The pair quickly became a mustsee attraction across the Pee Dee and the state.

Up until that point, the son of Harley W. and Louvinia Stanley Odom lived a relatively quiet and unassuming life. All that would change on Nov. 26, 1986, when Barney and Flatnose

boarded a plane and flew across the country to make an appearance on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.

I recently went back and looked at a clip of the appearance on YouTube. I found it quite interesting.

The tree-climbing dog was the main attraction, of course, but before Flatnose did his thing, Barney was given a chance to chat a little with Mr. Carson.

The interaction between the two was priceless. Not intimidated by the bright lights and the crowd, Barney was just plain ol’ Barney. His South Carolina drawl, country charm, and laid back demeanor left Carson and the crowd in stitches.

Barney walked on stage wearing a blue jean jacket, white button up shirt over a yellow t-shirt, jeans, and white sneakers. Not the slightest hint of Hollywood

glam and glitter.

Here is a little bit of that interview: JC – “How are you doin'?”

BO – “I’m doin’ all right.

I seen a lot of thangs out here.”

JC – “You’re from the Carolinas. You said ‘thangs’ right off.”

BO – “If you can’t understand me, I talk – try to talk – a little bit plainer.”

JC – “I understand you perfectly. I spent a lot of time in the South when I was in the service. They speak a little different in Georgia than the do in South Carolina and in North Carolina and so on.”

BO – “They speak a lot different down here than they do in Dovesville, too.”

JC – “Is this your first trip to California?”

BO –Yeah, first time I ever been on an airplane. I brought me an extra pair of britches or two on a case I needed’em, you know what I’m talkin’ about?”

JC, crowd laugh BO – “They had a show on that plane. I never woulda believed that.” (pause) “The only thing I worried about was it fallin’,

but I wouldn’t a’ never knowed anything about it anyhow.”

Laughter JC – “Are you going to stay out here for a while.”

BO – “We’re headed back tomorrow. I got to get into that turkey, you know what I mean?”

JC – “Have you lived in Dovesville all your life?”

BO - “I’m a ol’ country boy.”

JC – “Are you married?”

BO - “Yeah, I’m married.

I hear you been married three times.”

Laughter JC – “So you’ve been married one time?”

BO – “Yeah.”

JC – “Did you get married when you were young?”

BO – “Well, I dated her for a bout a year and she said ‘Barney, will you marry me?’ I said, ‘Frankie, you’re gonna have to give me a few years to think that thang over.’ We dated on about six months. She said, ‘Barney, if you don’t marry me, I’m gonna quit dating you.’ You know, I thought a lot of her. I loved her. So I made a deal with her. I said

I’d marry her if she works and make the living. We shook hands on it and I’ve been working ever since.”

Laughter.

BO – “Mr. Johnny, she fooled me. But I enjoy her.

She’s alright. You gonna get hitched up again?”

JC – “If I can get the same deal you tried to get.”

JC – “Do you have any children?”

BO – “I got four boys – one that’s 25, one that’s 24, and one that’s 23. The youngest is 17 and his name in Barney Jr. People ask me, ‘Why wait ‘ til the last one to name him Barney Jr.?’ I tell’em I don’t know. I didn’t name’em. My wife did. And I been wonderin’ about that myself.”

Barney then brought out Flatnose who shimmied up a makeshift tree trunk, grabbed a pillow from the top and got a kiss from bandleader Doc Severinson.

Barney’s life was a whirlwind for a year or so. It

eventually settled down and the country boy and his dog returned to a quiet life in Dovesville.

According to his obituary, Barney, who worked for Sonoco for 36 years, “enjoyed being outdoors, using herring or flounder nets, and catching spots.

He was of the Baptist faith.”

Flatnose died in 1993.

Frankie died in 2015. Barney had been in poor health for the last few years.

There’s a road in Dovesville named after Flatnose. You can go by Barney’s old place and see the marks on a tree in the backyard where Flatnose honed his climbing skills.

Those are not the only marks the good ol’ boy from Dovesville and his dog left on this world.

Rest in Peace, Barney.

I’ve got nothing to say We have all learned that words are powerful and should not be wasted.

When The Most High created everything in the Book of Genesis, He spoke and things became into being.

If I remember correctly, the only thing he formed was Adam from the dust or from the earth/ground. He then fashioned Adam’s woman, Eve, from Adam’s rib. Now if we are made in God’s image, this says to me that we have the same ability to speak, and things come into existence or vice versa.

My son told me about a recent conversation he had with his pre-teen son who

When his dad asked him if he had seen her over the summer, his response was, “No.” His dad asked him, “Well, when you get back to school and you see her, what are you going to say to her?” He replied, “Noth-

ing.” Dad asked him why he wasn’t going to talk to her, and his son’s response was, “Because I don’t have anything to say!”

As simple as it sounds, this was a very powerful expression. Our words were meant to be intentional and engaging, not random and empty. Words were intended to build up people and tear down negativity.

Instead, we sometimes do just the opposite. I guarantee that if you listen to yourself sometimes, you would tape your mouth shut due to the stuff that comes out of it. We confess sickness and death when God has given us good health and prosper-

ity in John 3:1-2. He said He has given us life and that more abundantly, but we would rather talk about how we feel like we are about to die.

Some say this is a “harmless” expression, but because of who’s image we are made in, we might need to be more careful. It has the propensity to come to pass.

Some things and situations don’t need our conversation anymore. They don’t need to be given life again.

Once it’s dead, let it stay dead and keep it off the table of discussion.

As we mature in the Lord, let us learn how to choose our words, if any at all. A lot of the past in our lives doesn’t need to be reanimated by our words.

Our response should be like my grandson’s and declare, “I don’t have anything to say!,” or in the words of our friend Mr. Forrest Gump, “That’s all I’ve got to say about that!”

As GSSM’s new marketing and communications director, Thomas will look to strengthen the school’s social media and digital media presence.

GSSM hires Thomas to lead marketing and communications South Carolina Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics has hired Darlington native Hunter Thomas to serve as its marketing and communications manager.

Thomas brings more than 12 years of marketing and public relations experience to GSSM. Throughout his career, he has worked in higher education, NASCAR, and he has freelanced for several Pee Dee and Grand Strand media outlets.

“I couldn’t be more excited to join GSSM,” said Thomas. “I’ve lived in Darlington County my entire life, and I absolutely love the state of South Carolina. This is an opportunity of a lifetime, and I can’t wait to begin telling GSSM’s story.”

Thomas looks to strengthen GSSM’s social media and digital media presence, as well as the overall marketing efforts by implementing an innovative strategic content marketing plan.

The Marketing and Communications Department will also work with GSSM’s Leadership Team to develop a Marketing Master Plan that will support the mission and vision of the school’s overall Strategic Plan.

“We were looking for

someone with a passion for their work and an appreciation for GSSM’s mission to find and develop exceptional students,” said GSSM CIO Jon Shannon. “Hunter connected early on with our mission and brings a lot of energy and a deep portfolio of experience and connections to GSSM. We are excited to build new ways of engaging with people who want to learn more about the school and be a part of the great things happening here.”

Thomas most recently worked at Florence-Darlington Technical College, where he served as public information specialist. Thomas grew the college’s social media following, spearheaded the digital media content creation and graphic design and assisted with the public relations efforts. Thomas has also spent more than 12 years working in NASCAR as a journalist and photographer.

Thomas earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Francis Marion University in 2012, and a master’s degree in management and leadership from Coker University in 2021.

CareSouth Carolina awarded an Outreach and Enrollment Grant worth more than $600,000

CareSouth Carolina recently received a grant for $664,179 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Resources.

The money will be used over a three-year period to fund outreach and enrollment strategies aimed at educating families about the availability of Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) and directly assists families with the application and renewal process, said Marek Calhoun, Community Services Director for CareSouth Carolina.

“This was a very competitive grant,” Calhoun said.

CareSouth Carolina was the only recipient in the state.

“In all, 36 organizations in 20 states were awarded this funding, but we were the only one in South Carolina,” Calhoun said.

Since grant funding initiatives began in 2009, more than 330 awards to eligible entities have been issued for approximately $265 million to community-based organizations, states, and local governments. Connecting Kids to

Coverage (CKC) outreach grants share the common goal of reducing the number of children who are eligible for Medicaid and CHIP but not enrolled.

“At CareSouth Carolina we’re in a position to enroll individuals in Medicaid and CHIP,” said Calhoun. “One of the things we do is reach out to those in our community who may not even realize these programs are available to them. I think it’s important for not only individuals as adults to have access to qual-

ity healthcare whether or not they are insured, but it’s even more important for our children to have access to health insurance so they can have a long and healthy life.”

CareSouth Carolina is a private, non-profit community health center delivering patient-centered health and life services in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina.

CareSouth Carolina operates centers in Bennettsville, Bishopville, Cheraw, Chesterfield, Dillon, Hartsville, Lake View, Latta, McColl and Society Hill.

Coker awarded Upward Bound grant

Coker University has recently been awarded a TRIO Upward Bound grant for the 2022-23 academic year. The grant will be supported for up to five years.

UB will serve 60 students at four local high schools: Darlington, Dillon, Hartsville, and Marion. The Upward Bound program is one of eight Federal TRIO Programs designed to identify and provide services to students with the goal of increasing the rate at which participants complete high school and enroll in and graduate from college.

Coker University also has a funded TRIO Student Support Services grant, which provides academic support to 140 Coker students.

Those who complete the UB program will be granted automatic admission to Coker University.

Coker University’s ambitious program provides a comprehensive approach to supporting students during a time of increased trauma following COVID-19 and civil uncertainty. Coker will provide academic, social, emotional, and career support including: weekly tutoring, academic advising, assistance with college admissions requirements, ACT/SAT preparation, and career development events and resources.

Included is a six-week summer program where students will not only receive academic instruction but also participate in a signature experience with Cypress Adventures, a local community organization that offers leadership training to middle and high school students. CA has developed a special leadership program for UB stu-

dents that is evidence based and grounded in traumainformed practices. This week-long learning experience prepares students for a productive five weeks of more traditional academic pursuits in the UB summer program and provides students with invaluable life lessons that will follow them through high school and beyond. Students can expect this program to begin in the next academic year.

“We are excited to have received a competitive TRIO Upward Bound grant that will allow us to increase programming that supports high school academic performance, retention, and graduation as well as college enrollment and completion,” said Provost Dr. Susan Henderson. “We look forward to our collaboration with Darlington, Dillon, Hartsville, and

Marion High Schools.”

National Night Out at Burry Park on Saturday Join first responders in Burry Park as the City of Hartsville celebrates National Night Out on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 6:30–8:30 p.m.

The event will feature free snacks, kid’s activities such as a balloon animals, bubbles, a DJ, and more. Hartsville Police Department and Hartsville Fire Department will be attending the event for a meet and greet with the community. Both departments will host games to give kids a look into life as a police officer or firefighter.

Hartsville Police Department will also be placing an emphasis on safety and prepa-

ration at this year’s event.

They will have 100 free child ID kits for children. These kits will allow parents to have a documentation of identifying information for children should it ever be needed. The Department’s DUI Officer will also be on site with a drunk driving simulator for those 16 years and older. They will also have 100 free backpacks to distribute to those children that may be in need of that supply to start the school year.

Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin Robbins will also be on site distributing treats including donuts, coffee, and more!

Sellers named DCSD Teacher of the Year Gladys Sellers, a fifth-grade teacher at Bay Road Elementary School, is the Darlington County School District’s 202223 District Teacher of the Year.

Superintendent Dr. Tim Newman announced the prestigious selection during the district’s Back-to-School Convocation on July 26.

“Mrs. Sellers is the epitome of an excellent teacher,” said Newman. “Her care and compassion for students and their futures is evident, and we are fortunate to have her in the Darlington County School District. I look forward to her representing all of the outstanding educators who call DCSD home.”

Sellers is beginning her 15th year of teaching this school year, and she will be entering the 12th in her current position.

Morgan to speak at Grassroots Luncheon The Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Hartsville Chamber of Commerce will play host to the 2022 S.C. Chamber Grassroots Tour Luncheon Sept. 7 at the Darlington Raceway Media Center.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin at noon.

Bob Morgan, president and chief executive officer of the S.C. Chamber of Commerce, will lead the program discussion and legislative review.

Each year, the S.C. Chamber partners with regional chambers of commerce throughout the state to present the Alliance Grassroots Tour along with a legislative update or review.

DuBose named DCSD’s Support Staff of the Year Ernest DuBose, campus supervisor for the Darlington County Intervention School, has been named DCSD’s 2022-23 District Support Staff Person of the Year.

Superintendent Tim Newman announced the honor during the district’s Back-toSchool Convocation on July 26.

“Mr. DuBose goes above and beyond to ensure the safety and security of both students and staff at his school,” said Newman. “He is always looking to help students in any way he can. He truly believes the work being done in the classrooms of DCSD is foundational to the futures of our students. We are excited to have him represent all of the vital support staff employees across the district.”

DuBose said during the convocation that in his 20 years of working with students, he has been fortunate to witness countless students go on to be successful in all walks of life. In fact, as part of a requirement during the judging process, he wrote those experiences are what he finds most rewarding.

“The part of my job that gives me the most satisfaction is the interactions I have had with our students in the community,” he wrote. “Former students have come up to me to thank me for believing in them and keeping them on the right track. They mention the physical training they received every morning before school started. I suppose what may have seemed tedious has made them better equipped to deal with life after high school. They are eager to tell me about their accomplishments, which have included diving directly into a career, working on a college degree, or enlisting in one of the many branches of our military.”

During the convocation, the district also celebrated all of the School Support Staff Persons of the Year, along with the three finalists for District Support Staff Person of the Year.
