That’s what the good folks in the small town located in northwest Pennsylvania are singing this week as they welcome visitors from around the world who have come to celebrate the town’s most popular resident on his special day.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, around 3 a.m., the members of the Punxsutawney

rodent’s weather forecast. If Phil sees his shadow that means we should expect six more weeks of winter. No shadow and we can plan for an early spring.

For nearly 150 years, Feb. 2 has been celebrated as Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney. What began as a local observance in 1887 has evolved into a week-long festival that draws on average about 30,000 visitors to a town with 5,800 residents.

For those who might be intrigued to know the long history behind Groundhog Day (its origins go back well beyond

150 years) and the world’s most famous “ground squirrel,” here are some interesting facts:

• The beginning of February marks the halfway point between the winter solstice (the shortest day of the year) and the spring equinox (when night and day are about the same length). Pagans would celebrate February 1 or 2 with a festival of light to mark the start of spring. According to Gaelic legend, if the goddess Cailleach wanted a long winter, she’d make the day bright so she’d have sunlight to gather more firewood. But if it was a cloudy or dreary day, she’d stay in because spring was on its way.

• Medieval Christians adapted the festival and handed out candles. This

feast day, called Candlemas, falls 40 days after Christmas, marking the end of the period when Jewish tradition would have considered Jesus’ mother unclean after giving birth. She would have been allowed to worship in the temple again, so February 2 is also considered the day that baby Jesus would have been presented there for the first time.

• It was almost known as Badger Day. When the Germans settled in Pennsylvania they had a hard time finding badgers which they traditionally used on Candlemas Day, so they made the switch to the groundhog.

• The first official celebration of Groundhog Day took place in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on February 2, 1887. A group of businessmen

made their way to Gobbler’s Knob and formed the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

• Punxsutawney Phil’s full name is Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary.

• The average life span of groundhogs is only 10 years—but fans are adamant that there has been only one Punxsutawney Phil, who is kept alive with a special “groundhog elixir” given to him every summer that lengthens his life for seven more years. There’s no official word on how many groundhogs there have been.

• Phil has a wife named Phyllis and they both live in the town library at Gobbler’s Knob.

• Punxsutawney Phil’s

prediction accuracy is actually not very good. He’s been right less that 35 percent of the time.

• Other weather forecasting groundhogs include Staten Island Chuck from New York City, Sir Walter Wally from Raleigh, N.C., General Beauregard Lee from Atlanta, Ga., and Jimmy the Groundhog from Sun Prairie, Wis.

Texas started its tradition in 2010 and uses its state mammal, an armadillo, to predict the weather for Armadillo Day. The armadillo, named Bee Cave Bob, makes his weather prediction at the West Pole in Bee Cave, Texas.

The goal of the expedition was to raise funds to finance a children's day care, school and library for the Children of the Peak Sanctuary while exploring Mongolia’s national landscapes vibrant culture. Fisher and her fellow riding colleagues traveled with a crew of local guides who assisted them throughout the trip.

After nearly three months of riding local Mongolian horses eight to 12 hours a day in all kinds of weather, Fisher was able to observe how she learned to cope with discomfort, hypothermia and injury in unfamiliar surroundings. She said this gave her valuable, practical insight into human psychology that she will bring into her classroom.

“It’s impossible to maintain a mask for more than two or three weeks under stress,” Fisher said. “Your real persona eventually surfaces.”

The expedition covered more than 2,200 miles through steppe, moun-

tains and wetlands. Fisher, and others, on the expedition rode local horses known for their toughness. They are a small breed, usually about 48-56 inches tall. They are descended nearly unchanged from the herds that were used by Genghis Kahn and his nomadic army.

Riders came from all of the world and endured snow, ice storms, extreme wind, thick clouds of insects and tricky terrain. They bathed in lakes, sheltered overnight in traditional yurts, ate local foods and learned to rely on each other as they faced the challenges of the journey.

“You can travel for days and never see another human being,” Fisher said. “Which means you do a lot of introspection. You do a lot of observation of nature. You do a lot of communication with the herders when we have no common language but somehow had to find ways to

communicate. From that perspective, I would say that it’s very clear, even though we’re on the other side of the planet, and we don’t even speak the same language, we’re all in it together.”

Fisher was moved by observing how humans will work together in difficult circumstances and take care of each other. She said that when the group ran into challenges, everyone pulled together to help each other through, one person at a time, no matter the circumstance or what one was enduring.

This was Fisher’s third journey to Mongolia. A couple of years earlier in 2017, she had started with her expedition and

had an accident that seriously injured her, causing her to be packed over land to the nearest town from which she could receive treatment and return home. Throughout her recovery, she dreamed of trying again one day. In 2019, she spent two weeks visiting the Tsaatan tribe, and then recently, she set out on her first expedition since her injury.

Fisher has taught psychology at GSSM since 2008. An avid rider, she specializes in endurance riding with her horse Ella in competitions around the Southeast. She studied psychology and cognitive science at the University of Colorado at Boulder where she

received a Ph.D., did post-doctorate research at University of Colorado at Denver, and studied Russian and French language and literature at the University of Wisconsin.

As she prepares for her spring classes at GSSM, Fisher is already thinking about the wildness of the Steppe, the quick stride of the small, tough horses and the joys and challenges of being in a community of people committed to discovering themselves as they explore the world.

Fisher plans to return to Mongolia and complete another expedition in June, when she will travel 700 kilometers over the course of 10 days.

Art Inabinet recently announced the signing of middle infielder and righthanded pitcher Owen “O.T.” Taylor of Darlington to a national letter of intent to attend FMU in the fall and play for the Patriots in 2024.

Taylor, 6-2 and 185 pounds, is a sophomore at Florence-Darlington Technical College, where he will play for coach Pre-

ston McDonald this spring.

Taylor spent his freshman season at UNC Pembroke, where he appeared in a 25 games, including making 19 starts. He batted .284 with 21 runs scored, five doubles, four home runs, and 15 runs batted in. He posted an on-base percentage of .418 and was 5-for-5 in stolen bases.

“Owen is a really good 2-way player,” Inabinet said. “His skill set is good and he will have a chance to play for us right away.

He is very athletic, has some power at the plate, and is a good base runner who knows how to steal bases. He will hit in the middle of the line-up for us and will log some innings on the mound out of the bullpen.”

Francis Marion posted a 29-19 mark in 2022 and will open its 2023 campaign on Feb. 3 at Newberry College. This year’s roster includes 14 seniors.

Davis named varsity boys’ soccer coach

Hartsville High School recently announced the hiring of Zack Davis as its varsity boys soccer head coach. Davis is an HHS alum and former soccer player for the Red Foxes.

Principal Corey Lewis said Davis’ experience with the program and dedication to the sport will be beneficial for students.

PAGEANT WINNER

When Isabella Stamato was a junior at Trinity Col legiate School, she saw a need for building a commu nity amongst the students at her school. Trinity had recently added a sixth grade. Most of the time, the seniors and the sixth graders had very little interaction. Their classes and lockers were in differ ent buildings. Stamato saw this as a problem that could be corrected and she came up with the idea for a program to change all of that.

The Senior Buddy Pro gram pairs an outgoing senior with an incoming sixth-grader in order to facilitate their transition into a new school. The sixth-grade students are able to ask their buddies questions about the school, about where things are, or even for help with homework. The seniors help them feel welcome in the school and are role models for the younger counterparts.

Now, because of the program, Stamato introduced, every sixth grader arrives at Trinity with a friend and mentor. This school year, sixth graders and their senior buddies have had a get-to-knowyou party, a Halloween costume party, and a holiday get-together where they exchanged gifts.
