One of the grand Christmas traditions is reading the much-loved poem, “Twas the Night Before Christmas,” to our children or grandchildren. Most kids, and adults for that matter, could give two hoots about poetry, but Clement C. Moore’s verses have stood the test of time and are engrained in our minds, if not our hearts.

Thanks to Moore and his poem, we have the image of Santa that every kid in the world recognizes. It introduced us to the Jolly old elf and all of his reindeer - with one notable exception, of course. In Moore’s poem, there was no Rudolph. He would not come until years later.

Moore’s Christmas classic has an interesting history. He was a professor of

Oriental and Greek Literature, as well as Divinity and Biblical Learning, at the General Theological Seminary of the Protestant Episcopal Church, in New York City. The seminary was developed on land donated by Moore and it continues on this site at Ninth Avenue between 20th and 21st streets, in an area known as Chelsea Square.

The poem was first published on Dec. 23, 1823 in a Troy, N.Y. newspaper called The Sentinel. It was titled “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” and its author was not named. It was well received and its popularity spread during the coming years. It was reprinted by The Sentinel at Christmas each year.

for his children on Christmas Eve in 1822. Moore said he based his vision of Santa Claus on both St. Nicholas and a local Dutch handyman where he lived in New York. Legend has it that the handyman operated the sleigh that took Moore home.

Four handwritten copies of A Visit are known to exist, with three in museums and one purchased at auction by an anonymous media mogul for $280,000 in 2006.

In the spirit of the season, and with all due respect to the author, I share with you now a modern day version of Moore’s timeless tale (courtesy of www.theodysseyonline.com):

A Modern Day Visit from St. Nicholas

’Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.

Crazy-patterned socks were hung by the chimney with care

Our Christmas pajamas from high school still put to good use,

It was the perfect thing to wear and look decent in photos under the Christmas spruce.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Off to the windows I ran like The Flash,

I ripped open the shutters and didn’t know where to find the sash.

The moon was bright, trying to be the next supermoon

Making the world look brand new like a fresh helium balloon

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer.

With a little old driver, so lively and quick, It took me a minute (without my glasses) to realize it had to be St. Nick.

Faster than Usain Bolt running across the loft they came,

To the top of the wall!

Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!”

As shoppers that before Black Friday sales fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky.

So up to the house-top up and up they flew,

With a sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing of pawing of each well manicured hoof.

I flew down the stairs and ran into the living room, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a zoom!

He was dressed in red and white, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were covered in ash and in soot.

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a college student, lugging around their backpack.

His eyes how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smell of it mingled with that of our Christmas wreath.

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

And to quote DC Talk, “that wiggled around like marmalade jelly.”

Pentatonix Christmas music played on in the back,

And he whipped and he dapped along with each track.

A nod of his head, he threw up a peace sign, Letting me know I could watch from the sideline.

He spoke not a word, but went straight to work, He filled all of our socks, then turned with a jerk.

And flipping a water bottle with such ease and such poise,

And giving a nod, he dashed up the chimney without even a noise!

In 1837 Moore came forward and accepted credit for writing the poem. He said he initially wanted to keep his authorship secret because he was a professor and the piece wasn't considered a scholarly work. He said he wrote the poem

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there.

We decided to sleep and snuggled up in our beds,

While visions of Starbucks holiday drinks danced in our heads.

And he whistled, and shouted, calling them Kardashian-esque names!

“Now, Karly! Now Kris! Now, Kendall and Kylie!

On Komet! On Kourtney! On, Konner and Kaitlin!

To the top of the porch!

He looked like he just came out of the Coca-Cola commercial, the resemblance was scary!

The beard of his chin was as white as the snow,

There’s no way “No Shave November” was something he’d know.

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a holler, And away they all flew like the sky was much smaller

But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight, “Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”

District to consolidate St. John’s, Rosenwald

At its December monthly board meeting, the Darlington County Board of Education voted 5-2 to move forward with the construction of a new school facility to house the consolidated schools of St. John’s Elementary School and Rosenwald Elementary/Middle School. The project is expected to be completed in

time for the 2025-26 school year.

“This is really about what is most beneficial for our children,” said Warren Jeffords, chairman of the board of education. “Education and safety are what we should be concerned with the most. “It’s not an easy decision when you are talking about merging schools and closing schools. It’s a very difficult decision. But ultimately, it’s about our children and giving them the best opportunities we can.”

Board members Leigh Anne Kelley (District 1), Warren Jeffords (District 4), Richard Brewer (District 5), Wanda Hassler (District 7), and Jamie Morphis (District 8) voted in favor of the consolidation and construction of the new school. Board members Lucas Reed (District 2) and Charles Govan (District 6) voted against the project.

The new school is part of the Darlington County School District’s 2019 Facility Plan. The facility will be built at 2308 N. Governor Williams Highway on land the school district purchased in the spring. Early costs were predicted to be approximately $30 million based on market conditions in the spring of 2022. The facility will be built with existing district funds and will not require a referendum or tax increase.

No reductions in staff are expected.

“This was a difficult decision for the board,” said Superintendent Dr. Tim Newman. “The historical significance of both Rosenwald and St. John’s speaks for itself. At the same time, we are focused on providing our students with the best educational environment possible. Merging these two schools into a newly constructed modern, technology-rich, safe, and secure building with educational spaces suited for today’s learners is what we believe is best for our students’ future. I know there may be some disappointment in both communities, but I hope everyone understands our primary commitment is to student success.”

Last year the Board of Education held several public meetings to share information about the project with the community members. In making their decision, the board considered the age of the buildings of St. John’s Elementary, which are between 100 to 200 years old, and the declining enrollment at Rosenwald Elementary/Middle School. Currently, there are only 81 students in PreK-5th grade and 46 students in grades 6-8 at Rosenwald.

Several board members

expressed a desire to find new uses and purposes for the old school buildings in the community.

“We need to make sure these buildings do not go unused,” said Lucas Reed, a board member from Society Hill.

Reed suggested the district reach out to the schools’ alumni associations and other groups to help find uses for the buildings.

“We have options available with the buildings,” he said. “But first and foremost, we’ve got to place our kids first.”

“It’s not an easy decision

to make, but I know we have spent the better part of this year doing our due diligence,” said Board Member Leigh Anne Kelley. “This board has always put kids first. And some decisions are harder than others, but the first question should be, ‘How will this impact the kids?’ The safety of the kids and the betterment of the kids always come first. There are a lot of other things involved in making the decisions - that impact the decision and that sometimes make it hard to make the decisionbut the first question always has to be about the kids.”
