SCDCA offers assistance in response to Equifax breach

The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) is arming consumers with the knowledge they need in the wake of the Equifax Security Breach. SCDCA encourages the 2.3 million South Carolinians affected to guard against identity theft and: Know the tools. SCDCA has a short guide <http:// www.consumer.sc.gov/Documents/IDTU/ID_Theft/IDT_ Tools_EqBr_Sept2017.pdf> dedicated to helping consumers whose information was exposed. From security freezes to nontraditional

monitoring tools to the signs of ID theft, the guide will help get consumers on the right track. Access it on the Identity Theft Unitâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s webpage.

Call SCDCAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ID Theft Unit. Every case of identity theft is different. Consumers with questions about how to prevent or address identity theft are encouraged to contact the Unit for specific guidance.

Avoid misconceptions and misinformation. Identity theft laws vary by state, so many SC consumers are often unintentionally given misinformation by the credit

reporting agencies and national outlets. The best source for SC specific identity theft information is SCDCAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Identity Theft Unit.

Some common misconceptions are: A security freeze costs money. It is free to place, temporarily or permanently lift a freeze for SC residents.

If a SC consumer is charged, they should file a complaint with SCDCA. Looking at my credit report hurts my score. Consumers are entitled under federal law to a free credit report each year. It does not affect your credit score.

The fraud alert is the same as the freeze. The fraud alert only lasts 90 days and does not completely bar access from the credit report like the freeze does. The fraud alert also entitles consumers to an additional free credit report; the freeze does not.

My information was exposed, I must be an iden-

tity theft victim. Whether your information was lost, stolen or exposed, it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make you an identity theft victim. A criminal has to use your information for you to be a victim of identity theft.

On September 7th, Belk hosted a grand re-opening celebration at its Hartsville location as part of a $40 million investment in remodels, new stores and capital improvements. DCSD hosting Magnet Fair Sept. 28 Students and families from across Darlington County School District are invited to participate in the 2017 Magnet Fair on September 28th from 6-8 p.m. at Darlington Middle School.

The Magnet Fair aims to stir up excitement and applications for the district’s magnet programs. There are several programs available in the district, and returning for a second year will be the ACCELERATE SC’s Engineering LaunchPad and PreACCELERATE BRIDGE Program. Open to rising ninth and tenth graders, the

Hartsville Middle School band, Thornwell School for the Arts’ chorus, Mayo High School for Math, Science and Technology’s Phoenix Phame. All contributing schools will include Brockington Elementary Magnet School, Thornwell School for the Arts, Darlington Middle School, Hartsville Middle School, Darlington High School, Hartsville High School and Mayo High School.

The fair will also feature photo booths, face painting and food for sale.

HARTSVILLE RED FOXES Foxes mid-season report

By Coach Jimmy White As the Red Fox football team wrapped up the first half of the regular season with a 21-14 win over the Marlboro County Bulldogs, running their record to 4-1, it is time to look back and evaluate the Foxes to this point.

Coach Calabrese will use the off week to see what’s been good, and what needs work as they prepare for the conference season. Of course before the conference games begin there will be a very difficult game against Abbeville, the defending 2-A state champions. The game will be played October 29th at Newberry College. All reports indicate the Panthers could be a betther team than the one that defeated the Red Foxes last year.

Let’s review the season.

Taking a look at the offense, they have proven to be an explosive, big play team. Like last year Tiyon Evans has been the leading rusher as well as the leading scorer. He has been joined by Collins Bishop who is rounding into shape after suffering an ankle injury in the pre-season.Other runners include Zavaric Hines who replaced Quise Huggins who moved to defense after Game 3.

Backups Donovan Lambert and Lacy Josey have

played well when they went in the game. QB A.J. Joyner has been effective keeping teams from ganging up on the running by hitting some big completions to receivers Dashawn Davis and Zy Sanders.

Like all coaches, Coach Calabrese would like to see the offense play a clean game, eliminating penalties and turnovers. The offensive line has been very solid for the most part. Leading players have been Tical McFarland, Mac Cranford, Lee Prescott, Montana Walker and Mac Guttry.

The defense has played well this year, making some big stops in crucial situations. The defensive line, led by Demonte Capehart, Izell McKay and Curtis Thompson, have excelled at putting pressure on the QB and freeing up LB’s to do their job.

The LB’s are led by Kevon Haigler, Montrez Williams, Hunter Weeks and Zay Peterson.

The secondary, for the most part, has been strong against several high-powered passing attacks. Rod Gattison, who usually draws the assignment of covering the best receiver, has done a very good job so far this year. Also doing a good job has been Kashari Pooler and safetys J.D. Pendergrass and freshman Keyshawn McDonald.

The kicking game faced questions after losing both punter and kickers to graduation. The question has been answered by Mike Norris and Caleb Caldwell, keeping special teams a strong point again.
