Everybody makes mistakes Last week was a hectic week at The News Journal. It was also my first major holiday as editor. Fellow employees were off on vacation for the holiday and others were out for personal reasons. A few good friends of The News Journal came in to help us make sure that the paper got out to you, our readers, on time and for that we are very thankful.

Some of our more dedicated readers may have noticed some spelling errors, incorrect grammar, and some strange syntax in last

week’s paper. As editor I would like to apologize for those errors. We here at The News Journal take great pride in what we do and the news that we bring to the community. We have a set of checks to assure problems like this do not happened, but due to being short-

staffed, holiday deadlines, and an overall sense of chaos we did not exactly put our best work out there.

As stated by Robert Burns, “the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry” and unfortunately that is what happened with last week’s edition of The News Journal. I think it is important to acknowledge our mistakes and move forward with determination to do better. In fact, I feel like the same can be said in all aspects of life.

Just as a child who is learning to ride their bike

gets up after falling off, we too as adults can respond in a similar way with whatever life may throw our direction.

If we make a mistake we must acknowledge it and then move forward with a desire to not make that mistake again.

These ‘mistakes’ in our lives do not have to be huge and life altering. For instance, these ‘mistakes’ could be more like undesirable habits.

Maybe you are trying to stop drinking so much coffee or maybe you want to lose some weight. But, one day

you had an extra ‘cup of Joe’ or ate that donut you promised yourself that you wouldn’t. Well, it is going to be okay. We all make mistakes.

We all do stuff that we don’t like. Life happens. The important thing is to understand that we are human beings.

So admit to yourself that what happened was not ideal. That’s always the first step. Then move forward with determination to do better than you did the day before. It won’t always be easy. It certainly won’t be

quick, but it will be worth it.

So from us here at The News Journal, we made a few mistakes last week. It’s okay though because The News Journal is written by human beings, some pretty awesome human beings if I do say so myself, but ultimately still human beings.

As the editor of The News Journal, I’m going to make sure that we do better because that’s what you as our loyal, caring, and, of course, awesome readers deserve.

Traditional IRAs (occasionally called deductible IRAs) are the “original” IRAs. In most cases, contributions to a traditional IRA are tax deductible: they reduce your taxable income, and as a consequence, your federal income taxes. Earnings in a traditional IRA grow tax deferred until they are withdrawn, but they will be taxed upon withdrawal, and those withdrawals must begin after the IRA owner reaches age 70½. I.R.S. penalties and income taxes may apply on withdrawals taken prior to age 59½.1 Roth IRAs do not feature tax-deductible contributions, but they offer many potential perks for the future. Like a traditional IRA, they feature tax-deferred growth and compounding. Unlike a traditional IRA, the account contributions may be withdrawn at any time without being taxed, and the earnings may be withdrawn, tax-free, once the IRA owner is older than 59½ and has owned the IRA for at least five years. An original owner of a Roth IRA never has to make mandatory withdrawals after age 70½. In addition, a Roth IRA owner may keep contributing to the account after age 70½, so long as he or she has earned income. (A high

income may prevent an individual from making Roth IRA contributions.)1,2 Some traditional IRA owners convert their traditional IRAs into Roth IRAs. Taxes need to be paid once these conversions are made.1 SIMPLE IRAs are traditional IRAs used in a SIMPLE plan, a type of retirement plan for businesses with 100 or fewer workers. Employers and employees can make contributions to SIMPLE IRA accounts. The annual contribution limit for a SIMPLE IRA is more than twice that of a regular traditional IRA.3 SEP-IRAs are Simplified Employee Pension-Individual Retirement Arrangements.

These traditional IRAs are used in SEP plans, set up by an employer for employees, and funded only with employer contributions.4 Spousal IRAs really do not exist as a distinct IRA type. The term actually refers to a rule that lets nonworking spouses make traditional or Roth IRA contributions as long as the other spouse works and the couple files joint federal tax returns.1 Inherited IRAs are Roth or traditional IRAs inherited from their original owner by either a spousal or nonspousal beneficiary. The rules for Inherited IRAs are very complex. Surviving spouses have the option to roll over IRA assets they inherit into their own IRAs, but other beneficiaries do not. No contributions can be made to Inherited IRAs,

which are also sometimes called Beneficiary IRAs.5 Group IRAs are simply traditional IRAs offered by employers, unions, and other employee associations to their employees, administered through trusts.6 Rollover IRAs (occasionally called conduit IRAs) are IRAs created to store assets distributed from another qualified retirement plan, often an employer-sponsored retirement plan. If the original plan were a Roth, then a Roth IRA must be created for the rollover. Assets from a non-Roth plan may be rolled over into a Roth IRA, but the rollover will be viewed as a Roth conversion by the Internal Revenue Service.6,7 Education IRAs are now mainly referred to by their

proper name: the Coverdell ESA. A Coverdell ESA is a vehicle that helps middleclass investors save for a child’s education. Taxes are deferred on the assets saved and invested through the account. Contributions to a Coverdell ESA are not deductible, but withdrawals are tax-free, provided they are used to pay for qualified higher education expenses.8 Consult a qualified financial professional regarding your IRA options. There are many choices available, and it is vital that you understand how your choice could affect your financial situation. No one IRA is the “right” IRA for everyone, so do your homework and seek advice before you proceed.

Darlington County teachers learn agriculture in the classroom

Heather Atkinson, Lisa Doyle, Susan Seeley and Jenny Steele of Darlington County were among fortynine educators from across South Carolina who recently learned how to bring agriculture into their classrooms.

The South Carolina Farm Bureau Federation (SCFB) hosted its annual Ag in the Classroom Summer Teacher Institute June 18-22 in Florence, where teachers of grades pre-K through 8th grade in public and private schools learned the importance of family farms and farmers and how to teach agricultural lesson to their students.

“The Ag in the Classroom program has many benefits because we can educate teachers about the importance of agriculture, and those teachers are then going to take that back to their own classrooms of sometimes thirty students.

The overall outreach of the program is unmatched,” said Harry Ott, SCFB President.

In addition to instruction about their learning and

Participants also experienced two days of farm tours in the Pee Dee, including Clemson University’s Pee Dee Research and Education Center, the Inland Port in Dillon, the South Car-

olina Cotton Museum and industrial hemp, rowcrop and beef farms.

“It is so important that students learn where their food and resources come from,” said Stephanie Sox, director of Promotion and Education for SCFB. “Providing teachers with not only the information and lesson plans they need, but also the confidence to teach agriculture makes it easy for them to do just that.”

“I never cease to be amazed at the positive agri-

cultural impact this course makes in the lives of teachers from across the state during this one week,” said Sox. “Teachers leave with a greater understanding of and appreciation for agriculture and those who grow their food, fiber and shelter.”

Ag in the Classroom Institute participants received lesson plans aligned to the state curriculum standards to use in their own classroom this fall. They also left with resources they can use to teach students about agriculture and the benefits farmers add to the economy, the environment and the community.

Participants earned three hours of graduate credit for recertification from Winthrop University, courtesy of SCFB’s Ag in the Classroom Fund. Along with a modest registration fee, which many County Farm Bureau chapters reimburse to participants, sponsorships raised through the SCFB’s Ag in the Classroom Fund cover the cost of tuition, room and board, resource speakers

and tours, and materials for the week-long Institute.

“If agriculture is to maintain its status as South Carolina’s largest business sector – providing more than 212,000 jobs and nearly a $42 billion impact on South Carolina’s economy – we’ve got to help people understand the link between their food and fiber and the farm,” said Ott. “Farm Bureau’s Ag in the Classroom program is a tool to help us accomplish that goal through our state’s teachers, and in turn to our state’s children.”

The 2018 SCFB Ag in the Classroom Summer Teacher Institute was funded through generous support from the SC Ag in the Classroom Fund, SC Farm Bureau Federation, SC Farm Bureau Mutual Insurance Company, the Dairy Alliance, SC Beef Council, SC Soybean Board, SC Peanut Board, SC Advocates for Agriculture, Amick Farms, SC Pork Board, Blue Ridge Electric Co-op, Newberry Electric Co-op, ArborOne Farm Credit, Scoular, First Citizens Bank

and SC Greenhouse Growers Association.

SCFB’s Ag in the Classroom program also offers year-round, no-cost in-service workshops to South Carolina pre-kindergarten through middle school teachers, schools and school districts. Darlington Raceway partners with Darlington County schools

Darlington Raceway has once again partnered with the Darlington County School District (DCSD) in a multi-agency summer reading program designed to emphasize the importance of reading and combat summer learning loss for students in Darlington County.

Nearly 1,000 DCSD students in kindergarten through eighth grade participated in the summer reading program in 2017, which involves Darlington Raceway, the Darlington County Library system, and South Carolina Future Minds in a districtwide effort.

For the past seven years, thousands of books have been read in the county as a result of the partnership between Darlington Raceway and the school district.

In 2017, many of the top summer readers in each grade (K-8) received a field trip to Darlington Raceway on Friday of race weekend.

The students participated in activities provided by ScienceSouth of Florence, received lunch from Bojangles’ and enjoyed a visit from seven-time Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson.

“This is the seventh consecutive year we’ve

partnered with the Darlington County School District with a reading program,” Darlington Raceway President Kerry Tharp said. “The program is a great way for children and teens to continue to read throughout the summer months and receive rewards for doing so.”

The top readers in this year’s summer reading program will also take a field trip to the track on Friday, Aug. 31, for a full day of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR XFINITY Series practices.

“We wholly appreciate Darlington Raceway, the Dar lington County Library System and South Carolina Future Minds for supporting summer reading in Darlington County School District,” said Dr. Tim Newman, DCSD superintendent. “With their help, we can continue to combat summer learning loss. We are extremely fortunate to have the support of these local institutions.”

During the summer reading program, students in kindergarten through eighth grade will read books and then take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests at any of the local branches of the Darlington County Library System. The Dar-

lington County Library System has computers available for the tests and specialists who can help guide students to the appropriate books as well as set them up with the AR tests. Each grade level will have specific point goals.

When the program concludes in August, all students who reach their AR point goals will be rewarded with a special field trip. In addition, the top three readers in each grade will earn the special trip to Darlington Raceway to for a oncein-a-lifetime experience at the track’s legendary Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series Bojangles’ Southern 500 race weekend.

Darlington County has also built a strong relationship with the South Carolina Future Minds, a 501(c)3 organization, which benefits teachers and education. On May 2-3, track president Kerry Tharp attended the organization’s “Teacher of the Year” ceremonies and made a $5,000 donation to the group as a result of the track selling old grandstand seats from its current “A Better Darlington” facility enhancement project.

Pain produces perfection Recently it was confirmed that I have been suffering with a pinched nerve. My family and I were relieved that it was diagnosed and that it wasn’t anything worse having experienced passing out and weird and debilitating muscle spasms that caused me so much pain. On the other hand, the pain and discomfort were not moved by the diagnosis.

My next course of action was to seek relief and I found help through my chiropractor who

has turned out to be a precious friend who I have grown to love more each time I visit his office. At first, the episodes of spasms gripped me with fear as I felt them coming on, but as time goes by, I take it like a champ and keep on ticking. Whenever I experience the episodes, I hear my doctor’s voice saying, “relax” like he spoke when I had a spasm on the table during a recent session.

It helped me tremendously. The excruci-

ating pain and discomfort has not diminished, but the frequency has and so has the fear.

In life we experience similar things. Sometimes we just get use to the pain and keep on going while our lives are spasming. We do our daily routine and still grimace privately when the memory of the things you suffer through hit your mind and your spirit. Understand that while I was diagnosed, I sought help to recover.

While it is in the hands of a skilled chiropractor, ultimately, the Lord is my healer!

So while you are experiencing pain in life, seek help in Jehovah-Rapha your healer. If you listen closely, you can hear the Savior saying “relax” when you’re going through a trial or difficult situation. Continue on with life knowing that it is a process of healing and that even though the pain may still come, it will decrease in frequency until one day, you

will experience it no more.

Keep moving forward and don’t allow the pain to paralyze you. Trust in your Healer who is allowing the process of healing to perfect you in your walk with Him. Jesus’ promise was that He would never leave nor forsake us.

He is a promise keeper!

Darlington Raceway provides updates on ‘A Better Darlington ‘ project

Darlington Raceway’s $7 million facility enhancement project has taken major strides over the past few months with many new improvements showcased to the media for the first time on Friday, June 29.

Updates to the project include: ·All old seats have been removed from the affected grandstands (approximately 60 percent of our seating capacity). ·The change of pitch in the Tyler Tower Grandstand is complete, greatly improving sightlines for fans in that seating area. ·New stadium-style seats with cup holders are currently being installed in Tyler Tower (frontstretch). ·Bench-style seats are

currently being installed in the Wallace Grandstands (frontstretch). ·All new bench-style seats have been installed in the Colvin Grandstands on the backstretch. ·Refurbished restrooms and concession stands in the Colvin Grandstand along with new cross-over gates on the frontstretch are scheduled to start in the next 2-3 weeks.

“We’ve made tremendous strides over the past few months on our A Better Darlington construction project,” track President Kerry Tharp said. “Things are really starting to take shape and our fans are going to love the new seats and other amenities we are providing for them. We’re thrilled with the

project and look forward to its completion in advance of our Official Throwback Weekend.”

One special person in particular was getting a look at the improvements Friday Ann Hunter, wife of the late Jim Hunter (President of Darlington Raceway from 1993-2001). Ann was on hand to see the differences of the new seating configuration and how it compared to the original grandstands her husband helped build almost 25 years ago. Jim oversaw the original construction of the Tyler Tower Grandstands in 1994 while he was track president.

Jim was also recently named the recipient of the Landmark Award from the NASCAR Hall of Fame for

his outstanding contributions to NASCAR. His impact on the sport, from his time at Darlington, to his roles with the sanctioning body, Hunter was a legendary figure and greatly respected by his peers.

“I was fortunate to see the Tyler Tower Grandstands get built in 1994 and to see the renovations done today; it’s an amazing transformation,” said Ann Hunter. “This track means so much to the community. It is important to not only remember the amazing moments the track has provided in the past, but continue to look forward with these improvements so the track can be here in the Darlington community for years to come.

tion of the new Bojangles’ “Wall of Honor” was revealed on Friday as well, featuring the name of NASCAR legend and fivetime Bojangles’ Southern 500 champion Cale Yarborough.

Born in Timmonsville, SC, a short drive from Darlington, Yarborough was considered a hometown hero. The NASCAR Hall of Famer solidified himself as one of the most successful drivers in the history of Darlington Raceway and NASCAR. The Bojangles’ Wall of Honor will feature 2,200 feet of banners with the names of each driver that has won a Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington (49 in total thus far).

They will line the bottom

rows of the front and backstretch of the Colvin and Wallace Grandstands. These names will include Yarborough, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, David Pearson, and many more.

Red Cross receives new emergency response vehicle The Red Cross of Eastern South Carolina is honored to recognize Glasspro for its gift of an energy efficient emergency response vehicle, which enables the Red Cross to quickly provide food and supplies to people affected by disasters.

“When disaster strikes, Red Cross workers climb into emergency response vehicles and travel through impacted neighborhoods

providing food, water and comfort to victims,” said Louise Welch Williams, regional chief executive officer, South Carolina Region.

“Thanks to the generous support of Glasspro, we’ve been able to add a new vehicle to our fleet that will help us reach even more people in need.”

This generous donation comes just as hurricane season begins and strengthens

the Red Cross’ ability to help South Carolinians before, during and after a storm strikes. For example, the vehicle can quickly transform so that volunteers can either serve thousands of meals a day, following a storm. It will be South Carolina-based but is able to respond to disasters throughout the country.

“Every time a disaster strikes in our state, the Red Cross is there,” said Paul

Heinauer, president, Glasspro. “I am so humbled by the ever-present dedication of the organization’s disaster workers.

This emergency response vehicle will certainly be put to good use, not only around Myrtle Beach but across the state.

Beginning in July, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles’ (SCDMV) six Saturday offices will transition from opening every Saturday to two Saturdays a month until further notice. The agency’s six Saturday offices followed this operating schedule prior to January 2018 when they started opening every Saturday to prepare for and issue REAL ID driver’s licenses

and identification cards.

“We made the decision to transition back to our normal Saturday hours since there has been no measurable increase in the number of customers served in Saturday branches due to the availability of REAL ID,” said SCDMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo.

Starting July 14, these SCDMV offices will open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. two

“While we’re glad we’ve not yet seen longer lines and increased wait times due to REAL ID, we still want to remind South Carolinians that lines will grow as we move closer to 2020,” said Deputy Director of Field Services Courtney White.

“The time to switch to a

REAL ID with a short wait and a quick visit is now.”

To date, more than 254,000 South Carolinians have purchased or switched to a REAL ID since the SCDMV started issuing them on February 20. As of July 1, 2018, there were more than 3.8 million licensed drivers in the state and more than 550,000 ID card holders. On and after October 1, 2020, your license or ID must be a REAL ID with a gold star to use it to board a domestic, commercial flight, enter a secure federal building, or visit a military installation.
