Prine classic brings memories of ‘Dear Abby’ I was listening to an old John Prine song called “Dear Abby” the other day and it brought back memories of reading the much-loved syndicated column in the local newspaper. The letters she shared and her responses to them rarely failed to make you grin.

The lyrics to Prine’s song capture the novelty of Dear Abby columns perfectly. In the song, a quartet of unhappy readers unleash complaint after complaint, from “My hair's falling out and my rights are all wrong,” to “My wife hollers at me and my kids are all freaks,” to “My stomach makes noises whenever I kiss.”

Although inequality has always been one of the main issues that have plagued God’s children, we cannot afford to allow bitterness and hatred take root in us. Hatred towards our oppressors seems to be the appropriate emotion to possess, however, according to the Word it is the complete opposite.

Matthew 43:44 says, “But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Now this sounds so hard to do and Father God knew that before He commanded that we do it. The very last thing we want to do is show our oppressors love and pray for them. But hear me beloved, it is not by our power that we love our tormentors When we become transformed, it is by the help of the Ruach, the Holy Spirit that we are able to obey the command to love our enemies. There is an advantage in obeying God even when we don’t understand it all. He will reveal His truths as we trust him and obey.

Now this perspective has an immensely powerful benefit for those who allow the Holy Spirit to do the work in them.

Loving our enemies and those who for what ever reason want to hurt us, will give the persecuted a gift that will

refine their lives. It allows the Holy Spirit to make you more like Jesus (Yeshuah in the Hebrew) Who was the ultimate example of showing love while being persecuted.

But let’s be clear, loving our enemies, forgiving them for their sins against us and doing good to them does not mean that the persecuted shouldn’t be heard. We all have a right to come against hatred and evil and stand up for what is right. We can all agree that there is nothing right about what has been taking place in the “land of the free and the home of the brave”. Just because a believer stands up for what is righteous does not mean they are agreeing with the byproduct of rioting and looting. We stand for righteousness and we must not allow the enemy of our soul to continue to manipulate hate.

As believers, we must stand for what is right in the eyes of our Creator. We must say what He has said in His word and not conform to the opinions of others. Where we are now, love is what we need, but it is not the only thing we need. We need all who call God their father to let the world know that hatred will not be tolerated and demand that true justice must and will be served. It is the only way Satan’s well-oiled machine can be dismantled. We all have a part in bringing down the hatred that torments God’s people and that is to love and speak forth the truth that makes us free.

Love is not silent. Love wants the world to know that it is alive and well. When I fell in love with my husband, I wanted the world to know it and if anyone did anything to hurt him, I wanted something done about it. Everyone is not going to take to the streets, but even in your interaction with friends or in your Sunday school classes have a right-

eous conversation about what’s happening around us. If you are not as conservative, then put Satan to shame and put your voice behind it. Stand with the ones you call your brothers and sisters. Be willing to learn from one another and let us fight the good fight of faith together as one. This is not the time to release your embrace. This is the time to tighten your embrace to those who are going through adversity. If you don’t understand what to do, then don’t be afraid to ask.

I had an experience the other day in the store where I met an old acquaintance. We were having this wonderful conversation when this elderly lady passed by and interjected in our conversation. What she added was funny and relative but when I was leaving the establishment in the parking lot, I heard a faint voice saying, “Oh ma’am”! I turned around and it was interjector.

She came closer to me and began to apologize. She said, “I am so sorry if I offended you by what I said inside the store. My daughter keeps telling me to stop talking so much”. I laughed and told her that I hadn’t given it a second thought and we ended up having a very delightful conversation. But something inside me told me that her apology was for much more than interjecting into my conversation with my friend. I think you get the picture.

In this season that we are currently in, allow the Father to help you see what needs renovating in your life. Tear down some of those walls that are desperately trying to stay erect. Let them go so that He can expand you to be greater in Him and love on His people. Hear this message in love and ask for understanding. Better days are coming if we do it God’s way. Every blessing to you all!

100 deadliest days of summer: Memorial Day to Labor Day Summer is here and although we are not back to our normal routines, folks are still traveling, visiting family and friends, and going to destinations to find warmth and sunshine. It is important for parents of teenagers to discuss travel safety and distracted driving with them and to remember that accidents happen when we least expect them to.

The 100 deadliest days of summer is the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and during that time, car accidents involving teens rise considerably. Statistics show that during this time period, around 260 teens lose their lives each month. Almost 60% of teen crashes during these months are caused by distracted driving that occur between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Some of the contributing factors to teen crashes dur-

ing the summer are: 1. Speeding or reckless driving. Thirty-five percent of cases that involved teen drivers, the teen was speeding at the time of the crash. It is important to remember that reckless driving is more prominent amount male teens as well.

2. Distracted driving. You should discuss the importance of avoiding anything that takes your teen’s hands, eyes or mind off of the road.

Texting or using a phone, playing music, using GPS, or eating a meal are things that need to be done before they leave or until they are safely stopped at their destination.

Something as simple as a conversation with a passenger can take focus from the road and increase their risk of being involved in an accident.

3. Driving under the influence. Teens are not the only

ones who drive while under the influence, but more teens do so during these months, especially after leaving a party or other summer celebration where alcohol or drugs were involved.

Talk to your teen regularly to make sure they know the rules of the road, explain the dangers of driving, and ways to stay safe. We encourage you to set the example for them by also avoiding these risky driving behaviors. Make sure to remind them every time they leave home to wear their seatbelt and limit the number of passengers in the car when they’re driving.

Eric Niu of Darlington County, graduated from the South Carolina Governor’s School for Science & Mathematics (GSSM) on Saturday, May 30, at the Darlington International Raceway in Darlington.

Eric Niu, child of Qun Wang and Xiaokai Niu of Hartsville, will attend the University of South Carolina.

The 126 students who comprise the GSSM Class of 2020 hail from 31 different South Carolina counties and 66 high schools. Gift ideas for college graduates College students on the cusp of graduation have a lot to look forward to. With their degrees in hand, college graduates can take their first steps in what will hopefully be fulfilling careers.

Many families mark this very special occasion by throwing parties for newly minted graduates. Guests invited to such parties might want to give a gift that illustrates how proud they are of the new grad, and the following are some items that can help grads as they take their first steps into the professional world.

• Attire: It might not seem flashy, but college graduates often need to upgrade their wardrobes as they search for their first jobs. Men and women may not have much in the way of professional attire, so a gift certificate to a local tailor or clothing store can make for a great gift.

• Computer: This gift will likely stretch some gift givers’ budgets, but family members can pitch in and make a new laptop or tablet a group gift. It might be best to avoid desktop computers, as industry insiders note consumers favor mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets, over traditional desktop computers.

While men often lean toward majors like engineering and computer science that have traditionally been linked to high earnings, women have historically gravitated to lower-paying specialties like education and social sciences. Reports from the career guidance site Glassdoor analyzed how much male and female professionals with the same college degree earned and identified many instances in which women went on to earn more than

Learn more about valedictorian honors Commencement season is an important time in a soon-to-be-graduate’s life.

There is excitement at the prospect of new opportunities on the horizon as well as a feeling of accomplishment for successfully making it through years of schooling.

Receiving a top honor such as valedictorian can be the icing on the cake of a job well done.

Academics can be very competitive. The highest academic honor a student can receive in high school is to be named valedictorian of his or her class. Typically, valedictory honors are determined by grade point average; however, some schools may measure rank-

ings differently. For example, certain schools may have weighted GPAs, which means students in higher level classes can earn weighted GPAs. If a student takes an advanced-placement course, he or she can

garner a 5.0 score for that class by earning an A grade.

Standard courses may top out at a 4.0 for a course for an A grade, according to PrepScholar, a school-testing guide and tips resource.

Even though top grades are part of the equation, it may take more than grades alone to be named valedictorian. Some schools may weigh other achievements as well. It is important for students to speak with a guidance counselor about their school’s requirements to be named valedictorian.

Once these qualifications are determined, students eager to compete for the top prize can do the following.

• Take a variety of

courses, including AP classes when available.

• Study and do well on exams and in-class assignments.

• Do not be afraid to take risks and challenge oneself.

• Maintain a good rapport with teachers and seek extra credit when available.

• Maintain an optimistic outlook even when things may not be going as planned.

Adapt to the situation and make changes that can bring success, rather than throwing in the towel.

Being named valedictorian is a great honor for students that may propel some to academic success for years to come.

Three tips to finding the right graduate program Graduate school allows college graduates the chance to intensify their studies as they pursue advanced degrees. Many professions require advanced degrees, but students may enroll in graduate school for various reasons, including their own intellectual curiosity and the chance to improve their earning potential.

Choosing a graduate program is an important decision that can impact students’ career prospects and financial futures.
