ServeFLO two-week season underway

ServeFLO, a two-week special season of service in the community, got underway with Unity Sunday on June 12 and activities continue through June 25. This initiative is a flagship event of Helping Florence Flourish which is working toward a visible demonstration of unity of the body of Christ to bless Florence, explains Chris Handley, HFF team leader.

For the kickoff on Unity Sunday, churches were encouraged to unify the collective Florence County church body by teaching and praying through the same topic: To love your neighbor as yourself, and the same scripture: Ephesians 2:14-18.

A Lunch and Learn about Open Table Ministries was held on Tuesday, June 14, at noon at Cumberland United Methodist Church. Jon Katov, director of Open Table Ministries, was the speaker.

A Service Day is planned for Saturday, June 18, when approximately 200 volunteers will gather and form teams of service. These teams will refurbish houses, clean up neighborhoods, help in schools, participate in landscaping, etc.

For this event, Helping Florence Flourish collected a list of needs in the community and compiled an “opportunity for service” list. Churches and Christian organizations were asked to field a team during Service Day and the ServeFLO season. Churches, including St. Luke, Central, Calvary, Trinity and First Presbyterian, have formed teams and the invitation is offered to others.

The teams will meet for a brief rally at the Performing Arts Center at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday before fanning out in the community. The service projects include

Helping Florence Flourish is a Christian initiative formed eight months ago following interviews of 68 community leaders from seven areas of cultural influence – commerce, education, arts and entertainment, media, government, church and family.

They were asked what they felt God was calling them toward as a member of the Florence community and what were the greatest needs facing this community.

Their answers demonstrated a great deal of passion for this community and helped guide HFF in establishing focus groups to seek to address these issues.

Darlington City pool opens

DO YOU REMEMBER?

DARLINGTON – The City of Darlington has opened the Gandy Pool for the season.

Hours will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting, on Tuesdays through Saturdays at 115 Gary St. The pool is open to the public, and the cost is $1 for the day.

City pool rules All children age 13 and younger must be accompanied by an adult 18 or older, and that adult must supervise the child 100% of the time.

No adult may sign in more than two swimmers.

No weak swimmers or non-swimmers allowed in the deep end of the pool.

All children and adults who cannot swim must wear a wrist band identifying them as a non-swimmer.

All swimmers must

shower before entering the pool.

When signaled, all swimmers must exit the pool immediately upon lifeguard’s request.

All swimmers who wish to swim in the deep end must be approved by the lifeguard before entering.

No diapers allowed in the pool. Children must wear a swimmer’s diaper if needed.

All swimmers must wear swimsuits.

The red paper flowers were assembled by disabled and needy veterans, beginning in 1923, and sold annually before Memorial Day by members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars as a national fund-raising event. The Florence Evening Lions Club has the ongoing need for corrective lenses and collects usable glasses to support the Lions Recycle for Sight Program.

The club is continually collecting used prescription eyeglasses and prescription and non-prescription sunglasses as part of a unique recycling program. The collected glasses will be cleaned and prepared for distribution in developing countries where eye care is often unaffordable and inaccessible.

“We need everyone to donate their used eyeglasses,” said Waylon Hilley, Sight Conservation Chairperson. “In most developing countries, an eye exam can cost as much as one month’s wages and a single eye doctor may serve a community of hundreds of thousands of people.”

The donated glasses will be shipped to a regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center where they will be cleaned, categorized by prescription and prepared for distribution by Lions and other groups.

Bring Mexican political ethics to South Carolina

By Phil Noble Now the most reasonable response to this headline is “Are you nuts? Isn’t Mexican politics riddled with corruption? What could we possibly learn from them?

The answers to these three questions are – ‘no,’ ‘yes’ and ‘a lot.’

I suppose that there are some who would argue that the answer to the first question is ‘yes,’ but I haven’t been locked up yet so give me the benefit of the doubt on this one and let’s skip to the more important questions.

Yes, Mexican politics are shot through with corruption at most every level. The ethical history of politics in this country is not something that the League of Women Voters would want us to emulate but it has only been with the recent flood of drug money that politics has gone from shady to utterly corrupt.

How bad is it? Really bad.

There is a popular saying that most folks take as an article of faith that says: ‘’He who doesn’t cheat does not get ahead.” (I’ve heard the same sentiment expressed around the Statehouse in Columbia.)

What has happened in Mexico is that the corruption in government has now spilled over into violence and dirty tricks that would make even George Wallace and Richard Nixon recoil. The whole political system is in the process of breaking down.

So, you might ask, what does this have to do with South Carolina and why would we possibly want to import any of this to our state?

Well, the answer is that we would certainly not want to import any of this political disease, but we might want to consider importing some of the political cure that is starting to bubble up from the grass roots.

Let me explain. In the midst of all this corruption, something happened – the people began to take matters into their own hands. Mexican law requires that if enough citizens sign on to a legislative petition, the National Congress has to take up the measure. The law requires 120,000 signatures and to date over 630,000 citizens have signed on to a measure that would make lawmakers report their personal finances.

The initiative is called ‘3 out of 3’ and it requires government officials to 1) reveal all of their financial assets, 2) report any conflicts of interest and 3) prove they are paying their taxes.

As would be expected in a system as adverse to ethics reform as is Mexico the legislation is stalled and going no place. (Sound familiar?)

But, as a result of this citizens’ initiative something has happened in Mexico that would go a long way toward providing ethics reform in South Carolina – some Mexican politicians have begun to voluntarily divulge their financial information even before any legislation is passed requiring them to do so.

Thus far, 560 public servants have disclosed this information including 13% of the national Senate and 21% of the Chamber of Deputies (like our House of Representatives), 12 state governors and one member of the President’s cabinet.

So now let’s get back to ethics reform in South Carolina. For the third year in a row, the legislature has refused to pass any meaningful ethics reform. (And even the measures they are considering are really ‘Swiss cheese reform’ – more holes than cheese.)

We have seen lots of self-righteous posturing and speeches by Governor Haley and some statehouse politicians about the need for ethics reform – they always blame someone else for the failure of reform efforts to pass.

So, I’d say to these S.C. politicians, follow the Mexican example and voluntarily disclose – 1) your income and assets – how much and from whom, 2) conflicts of interest – what deals are you and your family in, and 3) release your state and federal income taxes – for all the years you are in office.

By percentage, if our Legislature were as ethical as Mexico’s, then six S.C. Senators, 25 members of the House and one member of Gov. Haley’s cabinet would have disclosed this information.

The people of South Carolina should say to the Statehouse politicians: don’t talk about ethics reform – just do it.

The politicians talk the talk, but won’t walk the walk.

There is a one word description for this – hypocrite.

A growing number of Mexican politicians have passed the test. To date, best I know, the current number of S.C. politicians who have voluntarily disclosed such complete information is zero.

Yes indeed, let’s bring Mexican political ethics to South Carolina.

Basic income: sense or nonsense

By Thomas L. Knapp On June 5, Switzerland's electorate voted 77% to 23% against a “basic income” proposal. The plan would have entitled each adult citizen to about US $2,500 per month from the Swiss government, with an additional payment per child, regardless of employment situation. Other polities, including Finland, the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands, and the province of Ontario in Canada, have trial runs of basic income schemes in the works.

Does the idea make sense? The identities of some who think it does -- at least in principle -- might surprise you. They include, among others, selfdescribed libertarians such as Charles Murray of the American Enterprise Insti-

tute, professor Matt Zwolinski of the University of San Diego, and Tim Worstall, Senior Fellow at the UK's Adam Smith Institute.

These supporters of the idea are, generally speaking, utilitarians or consequentialists. They accept the modern welfare state as a given and want to make it more efficient and humane. That is, they think it should cost less and accomplish more. Guaranteed income seems to fit the bill: Huge administrative cost savings from the elimination of a hodgepodge of welfare programs (for example, food stamps), more freedom for recipients to spend as they see fit (in the same example, the money could be used to purchase shoes rather than food).

Understatement of the Month alert: Not all libertarians support government

income guarantee schemes.

In fact, the vast majority of us vociferously oppose the idea.

In order for the state to redistribute wealth, it must first steal that wealth (the thieves call it “taxation”).

And before the state can steal wealth, that wealth must first be created.

Morally speaking, why should the creators of wealth – a category that includes everyone who labors to produce valuable goods and services, from the lowliest fry cook to the CEO of the company that built your car – be forced to subsidize the incomes of those who produce less, perhaps even nothing?

Practically speaking, why would those wealth creators do so? I don't know about you, but if I can make $20,000 a year cleaning toi-

My candidate in the first voting cycle was Pat GibsonHye Moore and my candidate in the runoff election will remain the same. I know she’s the best choice to represent us. Why? 1. Pat Gibson-Hye Moore went before city council and asked for wheelchair charging stations in our city parks so that our disabled Florence citizens who depend on their motorized wheelchairs can enjoy our city parks without fear of low battery life. council to ask that the city help provide warming stations to our homeless population in designated locations when the temperature falls below 20 degrees during the cold nights of winter. Again, they listened and they helped.

3. While driving, Pat Gibson-Hye Moore saw two cars fall into a sink hole caused by an underground water leakage. She stayed with the drivers until the police, public works and tow truck arrived and followed up with the car owners, city manager and mayor the next day to make sure that everything had been cleared and all repairs had been made.

RedWolves players to play games at library with teens The Florence County Library Teen Services Department has begun its 2016 Summer Reading program. Following the theme “Get in the Game: Read,” which focuses on gaming, physical fitness, and sports, programs promote reading and learning in various styles.

The library will host a gaming day with the Florence RedWolves on June 16 from 2-4 p.m. Players from the RedWolves baseball team will be joining teens to play card, board, and video games. Teens are welcome to drop in or stay the entire two hours.

This program is free and open to all rising 6th through 12th graders.

The Florence One Board of Trustees approved the appointment of three new school administrators for the 2016-17 school year, effective July 1. They include; David Copeland Jr., Principal, Savannah Grove Elementary and Cedrick Kennedy, Director, Alfred E. Rush Academy; and Stanley R. Brunson, Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Budgeting Services.

David Copeland Jr., has been named the new principal of Savannah Grove Elementary School. For the past three years, he has served as Assistant Principal at McLaurin Elementary. Prior to that time, Copeland held the position of mathematics and science teacher at Greenwood Elementary. He is a recipient of a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from Francis Marion University and a Master of Arts in Education Administration from Cambridge College in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Mr. Copeland has received an endorsement for having completed the South Carolina Department of Education’s (SDE) Transformational Leadership Academy (SCTLA). It utilizes a uniquely designed preparation program to equip individuals who aspire to be transformational school principals with a highly-specialized skill set and intensive practice in honing those skills in real school settings.

Cedrick Kennedy has been named the Director of Alfred Rush Academy. A certified teacher and administrator, Kennedy received a Bachelor of Science in Business Management from South Carolina State University in 2004; a Master of Arts in Teaching in Business Education degree from Winthrop University in 2006; and a Specialist in Educational Leadership degree from South Carolina State University in 2008.

He most recently served as an Assistant Principal at South Florence High School where he supervised school activities; performed teacher evaluations; facilitated a mentorship program for targeted students; and man-

aged the Safe and Supportive Schools grant.

Prior to that time, Kennedy was a business education teacher at the Florence Career Center. His experiences also include: Dean of Students at McClintock Middle School in Charlotte, NC; Career and Technology Education Teacher; Turning Point Academy, Charlotte, NC; Technology Teacher and Robotics Coach; Carver School of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia; and Business Education Teacher at Wilson High School in Florence.

Stanley E. Brunson, Jr., named Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Budget Services, replaces retiring Chief Financial Officer Luther Rabon. Since December of 2014, Brunson has served as Director of Finance for Marion County School District in Marion, SC. Prior to that he served as Chief Financial Officer for the School District of Williamsburg County in

Kingstree.

Disabilities Foundation expands recycling sites

Lighthouse gets Wells Fargo grant Lighthouse Ministries has received an $8,000 grant from Wells Fargo & Company to support the organization’s Working Mothers Education and Support Program, a six-month comprehensive program designed for low-income women with a child between the ages of 0-5.

The program includes an eight-week parenting class facilitated by a volunteer with a master’s degree in social work who teaches effective parenting. The non-profit organization also provides mothers with money management sessions and diapers, wipes, ointment and laundry detergent.

“We want to prevent a situation where a mother would abuse their child, and this program equips them with ways to manage stressful conditions so they and their children live healthy lives,” said Lighthouse Ministries CEO Cecilia Meggs.

“Wells Fargo’s gift has really helped grow and strengthen this program, and we are eternally grateful.”

Since 2006, the organization has enrolled more than 300 mothers in Florence County and has expanded its services to include meals and provide childcare for mothers attending the classes.

FSD1 Athletes of Year honored Jenna Nance of South Florence High and Christian Bruce of Wilson High received the 2016 Female and Male Athlete of the Year Awards for Florence School District 1. The awards were presented at the annual Male and Female Athlete of the Year luncheon held at Florence Country Club on May 21.

FSD1 Director of Secondary Education Dr. Kelvin Wymbs also announced the winner of this year’s “You’ve Gotta Have Heart” Award – West Florence’s Cartier Diarra.

Each high school nominated one male and one female athlete, and a committee

of local sports editors and directors selected the district winners announced at the luncheon ceremonies.

Nominees included South Florence’s Jenna Nance and Reginald “David” Vereen; West Florence’s Anna Sherman and Cartier Diarra; and Wilson’s Mallorie Gainey and Christian Bruce.

The annual event is sponsored by Cale Yarborough Honda, Florence Athletic Hall of Fame, Jeff Hyman, Mike and Jean Watts. Ira S. Rainwater recipients Terry Grantham (71); Ken Lester, (’59); and Dickie Lester (’62) donated awards.

Interactive art exhibit invites public interaction The Florence Regional Arts Alliance will introduce a new exhibition to the Florence County Museum’s Waters Gallery June 27Sept. 30.

The exhibition will feature the work of Ms. IlaSahai Prouty and includes an opening in the Waters Gallery Sunday afternoon June 26, at 4 p.m. All are invited to explore the work and meet the artist. The Gallery is located at 135 South Dargan Street in Florence.

This exhibition titled, A Social Construction, offers the possibility of reclaiming and redefining the language we use to construct the categories of race.

It includes the Paper Bag Test, an interactive installation that invites the public to define and reclaim skin tones and color as associated with race.

Historically, the paper bag test was said to have been used to separate black people into two categories – those lighter than a paper bag, and those darker.

Access to parties and clubs was assigned based on this criteria. The artist remembers thinking, “Which paper

The artist’s goals are to engage people in thinking about how we use words to describe, imply and evaluate

Prouty is an Assistant Professor of Art at Appalachian State University. Prouty was a resident artist at the Penland School of Crafts and has exhibited throughout the United States. Her public works include pieces for the Charlotte, N.C. Florence native to compete for Miss S.C. Teen Kinsley Odom, 16, and a rising junior at West Florence High School, will represent the S.C. Sweet Potato Festival at the 2015 Miss South Carolina Teen pageant from June 21-25 in Columbia.

The pageant is part of the Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization and the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Organization.

This will be Odom’s second appearance on the Miss South Carolina Teen stage and this year she has dedicated her year of service to spreading her platform “Downright Perfect” promoting Down Syndrome Awareness and Acceptance.

Odom took her platform statewide with her “Downright Perfect Pledge” which allowed individuals to declare that they would be nice to a person with an extra chromosome. She started her campaign in the Lancaster County School District and by the time she ended in the Florence County School District she had over 500 signatures.

“I wanted to do something different this year and created the “Downright Perfect Pledge”

campaign,” Odom said. “I was able to take it statewide and let individuals know just how passionate I am about making everyone aware of Down Syndrome Awareness and Acceptance.”

Odom’s platform is in honor of her nine year old brother Kayden, who was born with Trisomy 21.

“When Kayden came home from the hospital my platform was instantly created,” Odom said. “Unlike many others I live mine every day and will take care of him for the rest of my life.”

Not only did Odom take her platform statewide, but she was invited to Nashville this past March as a nominee for the prestigious National Youth Activist Awards presented by

INAUGURAL CLASS OF THE FELLOWS IN EDUCATION PROGRAM

Fellows in Education honors first class A ceremony took place this week for the inaugural class of the Fellows in Education program. The local leaders who made up the effort received commemorative certificates and were recognized for their efforts in completing the nine-month, intensive program focused on a better understanding of issues facing area schools.

The Fellows program was designed to give local leaders a unique, behind-thescenes look into several schools within Florence School District One. Over the course of nine months,

leaders saw firsthand some of the daily struggles and constraints educators face in the classroom. Leaders heard about seismic shifts in student needs and the additional state and federal requirements now placed on schools, teachers and administrators in Florence District One. The program is a joint effort between Florence District One, the Florence Chamber and the School Foundation.

The Fellows program took place over the course of nine months. Each

month’s program centered on a different educational experience that was unique to the classroom. The Fellows in Education program offered opportunities for community leaders to contribute to the development of better education policies in the communities in which they live and work.

Florence schools top finishers at Quiz Bowl

Two Florence schools took first and second place at the SCISA Elementary School Quiz Bowl.

The Montessori School of Florence team finished with the top score, followed by the team from All Saints’ Episcopal Day School, also in Florence.

Pinewood Preparatory School, Summerville, finished third.

Members of the winning team included Caden Crawley, Lucie Pike, Elizabeth Richardson, Dejah Spencer, Brian John (team captain), Thomas Merzlak and Ayan Guha.

Long, Weaver Whitehead, Alden Okoh-Aduako, Michael Gregory, Jay Smith, and Jay Riddle.

The competition was open to students in the fourth and fifth grades.

Following local and regional competition, the nine teams vying for the state title gathered recently at Pinewood Preparatory School to determine the winner.

“Each of the teams is to be congratulated for making it to the state finals,” said Larry Watt, executive director of the South Carolina Independent School Association. “The students must

be competent in all the academic areas.”

The teams, consisting of four students and alternates, had to answer generalknowledge as well as math questions.

The team captain could answer some of the questions after consultation among the team members while others had to be answered by an individual member of the team.

The South Carolina Independent School Association is a non-profit, voluntary association of over 120 independent schools serving more than 37,000 teachers and students.

DAR chapter meeting features Ray Reich

Miss South Carolina visits the Chrysalis Center on the morning of June 6

Miss S.C. offers encouragement to women at the Chrysalis Center Reigning 2015 Miss South Carolina, Daja Dial, visited the Chrysalis Center Monday, June 6 to share a few motivational and inspirational thoughts with the women residents.

The Chrysalis Center, located at 1430 South Cashua Drive, is a substance abuse residential treatment facility managed by Circle Park Behavioral Health Services. The facility provides inpatient residential treatment to 16 women who are pregnant or have children under the age of 10. During their stay they are provided a variety of services including intensive group counseling, individual therapy, family support services, onsite medical services and daycare for their children.

Miss Dial shared with the group her life experiences that motivated her to success.

She spoke of her experiences at Clemson University that included being a member of the Clemson cheerleading team, Student

Advisory Board and being a former Miss Clemson University. She later won the title of Miss South Carolina and eventually competed for the Miss America title, finishing as a top seven finalist. Miss Dial also actively participates in community service efforts including the Children’s Miracle Network, Palmetto Pride and the American Diabetes Association Celebrity Cabinet.

During her presentation she also shared a personal story about an illness in her family and how that challenge parallels the women’s struggle with addiction and recovery. She challenged each of the women to persevere in their recovery efforts and strive to make a difference not only in their lives, but the loved ones around them.

The Samuel Bacot Chapter, NSDAR, met at the Florence Country Club with Ray Riech as the speaker for the May 10 meeting. He gave an up-to-date presentation on the downtown Florence redevelopment. He told of new restaurants coming downtown in the next few months, as well as businesses coming.

The installation of new officers for 2016-2017 was also held at this meeting.

On April 27, a group of members of the Samuel Bacot Chapter, NSDAR. travelled to Lake City to present Darla Moore with the Community Service Award for her continued commitment to improving the community’s future.

WF student to study abroad Claire Derakhshan, a West Florence High School student, was awarded a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarship for 2016-17.

Claire will study Persian (Tajik) in Tajikistan for the summer.

Claire is one of only approximately 600 competitively selected students from across the United States who will receive a scholarship to study Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian, or Turkish overseas this year. While in Tajikistan,
