F1S investing in arts education The $1.5 million investment will benefit programs at every grade level. In a continued effort to lead the state in arts education, and improve and expand opportunities for students across the district, Florence 1 Schools is making further investments in all K-12 arts programs ahead of the 2022-23 school year. The investments total approximately $1.5 million, supplemented from various sources including federal and state grants. At the elementary level, a band program will be started at McLaurin Elementary School. That program and the band program

at Greenwood Elementary will receive highquality instruments and essential supplies. This is part of an ongoing effort to expand access to instrumental music at all elementary schools, especially those that feed the arts magnet programs. Earlier in the 20212022 school year, instruments were purchased to support band programs at Wallace-Gregg Elementary and North Vista Elementary, as well as orchestra programs in several additional elementary schools in Florence 1. Currently, over 200 elementary students are studying violin with new instruments in their hands. Elementary visual arts programs will See ARTS, Page 2

Florence Food & Wine Festival

The corks were poppin’ this past weekend as the annual Wine & Food Festival returned to Downtown Florence. The festivities kicked off Thursday with ‘Meat and Meander’ at the Waters Building. Friday’s big event was a ‘Sip and Savor Stroll’ through downtown establishments. Saturday’s events included a ‘City Center Market Brunch,’ a ‘Passport to Paso Robles’ wine class, and ‘The Final Pour’ main event, a four-course finale dinner held on the Francis Marion PAC lawn. Proceeds from the Wine & Food Festival benefited Help 4 Kids of Florence.

Florence Mayor Teresa Myers Ervin recently graduated from the Advanced Municipal Elected Officials Institute of Government. Graduates received their certificates during the Municipal Association of South Carolina's Hometown Legislative Action Day in February. The Municipal Association offers the Advanced Institute exclusively to graduates of the Municipal Elected Officials Institute of Government. Created in 2014, the Advanced Institute provides elected officials with continuing education through classroom

instruction and interaction with experienced peers. Graduating officials have participated in at least four of six courses to graduate from the Advanced Institute. Topics include public safety, budgeting, utilities, advocacy, economic development and governance. The Municipal Elected Officials Institute of Government is one of many educational and training opportunities that the Municipal Association offers for the elected officials and staff serving cities and towns.
