When Ashley Dawkins first arrived as a student on the campus of the University of South Carolina, her ambition was to enter into the field of law. After taking a course in elementary education, she felt moved to switch her goal.

“I reflected on some of my former teachers and realized that I wanted to be that positive support system for children,” said Dawkins who was announced Oct.12 as the 2021-22 Florence 1 Schools Teachers of the Year at a special reception/dinner sponsored by The School Foundation and held at the Florence Country Club.

Also recognized were 2021-22 Principal of the Year Sonya Graves of Lucy T. Davis Elementary School and Assistant Principal of the Year Carrie Ann Brigman of North Vista Elementary School.

As the Florence One Schools 2021-22 Teacher of the Year, Dawkins was presented a check in the amount of $1,000 from Signature Wealth Strategies.

For the fifth year in a row, Walmart, Bimbo Bakeries USA, and Tyson Foods have joined forces to help end hunger across the United States.

The three companies donated 15,000 pounds of food – equating to 12,500 meals – to Harvest Hope Food Bank through a partnership with Feeding America. Food insecurity heightened throughout the pandemic and Feeding America food banks – like Harvest Hope – struggled to keep up with demand.

‘Don’t be afraid of the FUD’ MUSC Florence CEO doesn’t let fear, uncertainty, or doubt hold him back The new CEO of MUSC Health’s Florence Division learned early on about “the FUD” from his grandfather.

“He would say, ‘Don’t be afraid of the FUD,’” recalls Jay Hinesley.

“And what he meant was don’t allow fear, uncertainty and doubt to prevent you from doing something. I’ve used that for my whole career.

There’s always fear, uncertainty and doubt when we’re doing something new or taking on a challenge or a problem. I firmly believe that not letting that deter me has allowed me to succeed.”

And succeed he has, serving as CEO at a series of hospitals. That meant moving multiple HENSLEY times with his growing family. Hinesley’s wife, Catherine, is thrilled to be back in her home state of South Carolina. “I’ve told him I’m not moving again. It got me back close to my parents and this was it for me,” she said.

She called her husband a perfect fit for his new role. He earned his Master of Health Administration degree at the Medical University of South Carolina, so he already had ties to the organization. But more than that, she said, he has what she called the gift of discernment.

“He has such good judgment, such sound judgment, and that’s for everything. That’s not just for work, but in his personal life too. He’s a very trustworthy guy with a gift of knowing what’s right – being able to see the big picture of what’s right for

“It may be more difficult to do the right thing, but it’s right,” Hinesley says.

Hinesley said he learned that growing up. “My family taught me a really robust moral compass, and that tracks well in health care. Doing the right thing is celebrated at MUSC. That’s what motivates me.”

So does helping people in times of crisis. “When people come to the hospital, their life is in chaos, and

they are at their most vulnerable state. We have such an incredible opportunity to impact their life by showing them compassion and grace and kindness. It really has a profound impact on people. I take a lot of pride in that.”

Hinesley said he envisions the Florence Division becoming what he called MUSC Health-Charleston 2.0. “We recruited additional specialists to help complement the services that we have here. For instance,

we’ve got a top-tier cardiologist starting next week. We also have an interventional neurologist starting to round out our thrombectomy program.”

The goal is to keep people in the Florence area from having to go to Charleston for acute care when possible. “We can keep a lot more patients in Florence so they can be closer to home, and we can be an extension of the academic medical center. That way, Charleston can

focus on the most complex of cases.”

Hinesley said hiring more nurses is also a priority. “The nursing shortage that has been predicted over the last 10 years has come to fruition. I think COVID just exacerbated that.”

When asked how he’d try to sell nurses on coming to Florence, he had a ready answer. “We are a collaborative, collegial patient-safetyminded organization led by captains of industry who want to do the right thing. And if they’re interested in taking care of their community and doing the right thing, this is the place to be.”

Catherine Hinesley said adjusting to life in Florence has been easier than any of the family’s previous moves. Their kids – one boy and two girls – have settled right in, and her CEO husband is just Dad around the house. “He’s taking our son to soccer in Myrtle Beach this weekend because he makes the time.”

He wants to be the kind of father he had. “When I was growing up, if I was with my father in line at a store, if he received extra change, he made a point to show me that he was giving the change back. There were lots of examples, I guess, of that type of thing.”

Hinesley applies that ethical approach not only to his role as a father – but also as a CEO. The FUD is no excuse. “It may be more difficult to do the right thing, but it’s right.”

#1Thing can make all the difference October is recognized as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, an observance that evolved from a single “Day of Unity” in 1991, organized by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, into a month-long series of activities by advocates working across the nation to end violence against women and their children.

That is why this October, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault is asking “What is the one thing (Hashtag #1Thing) you can do to end domestic violence?”

Domestic violence impacts millions of people each year, but it can be prevented. It requires the collective voice and power of individuals, families, institutions, and systems – each whose “one thing” adds a valuable and powerful component to transforming our communities.

According to the Violence Policy Center, South Carolina ranked sixth in the nation in the rate of women murdered by men in 2019.

“Many people care and understand that domestic violence is a serious public health problem. They want to do something but believe their actions can’t make a difference,” said Shana Sullivan, community victim services volunteer program manager/victim advocate.

“It feels overwhelming. But change can start with only one thing. The Pee Dee region is home to approximately 300,000 people. Imagine if all individuals in the Pee Dee area each commit to doing just one thing to stop domestic violence. Well, we could really see some serious social transformation.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, 1 in 4 women and 1 in 9 men have experienced contact sexual violence, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.

That is why we need everyone - advocates, medical professionals, educators, survivors, researchers, policy makers, law enforcement officers, business owners, students, and more, to do #1Thing to stop domestic violence here in the Pee Dee Region.

The one thing (Hashtag #1Thing) you could do to address domestic violence: • Be a caring and consistent adult in the life of a child; • Talk to loved ones about violence and oppression; • Create a culture of consent in your home; • Use social media to raise awareness among your peers; • Reach out to one of our local satellite centers to learn how you can help; • Listen to and validate a survivor of trauma.

This October join Pee Dee Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Assault as we mourn for those whose lives were taken by domestic violence, celebrate survivors and the tremendous progress victim advocates have made over the years, and connect with a true sense of unity to end domestic violence.

Walker hoping to prove he’s ‘Tough’ enough How tough is Quincey Walker?

To find out the answer to that question, tune in to the CBS reality competition show, “Tough As Nails,” on Wednesday at 9 p.m.

Walker, a 34-year-old resident of Florence and a diesel mechanic with Nucor in Darlington, is one of 12 competitors on the show that began its third season on Oct. 6. For those not familiar with the show, and I wasn’t until I became aware of Walker and started writing this column, it the brainchild of Phil Keoghan, the same guy who brought you the highly popular “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race.” Like the other programs, Keoghan also serves as host of the show.

The premise of “Tough As Nails” is pretty much the same as Keoghan’s other series. According to the show’s website, it is “a competition series that celebrates everyday Americans who roll up their sleeves and don’t think twice about working long hard hours and getting their hands dirty, in order to keep

their country running.”

The show tests the strength, endurance, life skills, and mental toughness of its 12 competitors.

There are six men and six women. Among them are a fire captain, a construction foreman, a contractor, a crop duster, a lineman, an ironworker, a cement mason, and, lest we forget, a diesel mechanic.

The show kicked off the season at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base in Southern California, splitting the competitors into two crews, Dirty Hands and Savage, and then putting the crews through a series of military-style challenges.

Walker’s crew, Dirty Hands, ended up losing the first crew challenge of the season.

Last week the show moved to Mount Baldy Village in the San Gabriel

Mountains, about 45 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

Competitors had to tear down and rebuild a section of fence as fast as possible, using only an ice cream scoop and an empty tuna can to dig three postholes.

Walker went beast mode and won the first heat in a time of 23 minutes, 57 seconds. The winner of the second heat finished ahead of him by a mere 15 seconds.

The 10 episodes of the show have already been taped. Walker is already back at home, but contractually cannot reveal who won or how he finished.

When the show concludes the winner will take home $200,000, a 2022 Ford Super Duty pickup, and the “Tough As Nail” championship belt.

I’ve never been a big fan of these kind of shows, but I’ll admit that I’m kind of hooked. I hope the big man brings home the belt and proves himself to be the toughest of the tough.

Walker, who is married and has two young children, grew up in Lamar. He wore

No. 66 and played defense for the Silver Foxes, helping lead them to the lower state championship game. Several colleges were recruiting Walker, including Clemson, but injuries cut his playing career short.

In the series premiere, Walker shares that he believes, “without struggle, there is no progress.”

In his bio on the show’s web site, Walker says the three words to describe him are humble, hardworking and compassionate.

“I pray, I work, I love on my family, I help people, and I listen to people,” said Walker. “I enjoy every day above ground and not take anything for granted.”

We’re not sure whether or not it makes any sense to wish Quincey Walker good luck because the competition is already over ands season three of “Tough As Nails” is in the books. We hope he won, but even if he didn’t we already know he is one very tough dude.

Sweet revenge: I peed on a toady frog I was born in the summer of 1972. The Vietnam War was still raging. Elvis was still very much alive.

Needless to say, I’m not a little boy anymore.

Yet, as I soon celebrate a half century on this planet, I was pleased to learn recently that, deep inside my wrinkled, fatty, hairy exterior, there still lives a five-year-old boy – and he still has a mischievous streak and some unresolved issues.

This epiphany came as I was reflecting on life while standing under the stars enjoying some fresh air, which, in the rural South Carolina Lowcountry, is a nice way of saying I had stepped into the backyard to urinate outdoors. (My apologies if this topic offends our more genteel readers, but you simply can’t write about little boys growing up in the rural South without at least once mentioning the sport of outdoor urination.)

There I was, pondering life’s little moments and mysteries, when low and behold an unsuspecting frog hopped right up to me, almost landing on my toe. I tried to shoo him away with my foot, but the little guy

just sat there and wouldn’t budge. It was almost as if the fellow were lonely and thought he had found a friend.

The toady frog, as we used to call them when I was a kid, was about the size of a child’s fist, and about as plump and icky. It was the kind of toad that hung out in the wet grass under your parents’ yard lights when you were a kid, and, every time you picked him up, without fail, he always peed on you. Then you would drop him, run inside screaming to your mother, and she would promptly instruct you to go scrub your hands.

“That’s how you get warts, you know!” Momma would always say.

Now, confronted with this frog 45 years later, a more enlightened, mature soul would most certainly have said something like, “Shoo, little froggy. Go away now!” and went about the mature, responsible

business of being an adult.

But the five-year-old lurking inside of me would have none of that.

“That’s the same frog that always peed on you!” the inner boy said to me.

“That’s crazy,” adult Mikey countered. “That can’t be the same toady frog!”

“Look at him!” Little Mikey said. “He’s got the same stripes, the same beady eyes, the same evil grin and everything!”

“He does look a little familiar,” Big Mikey admitted.

“You know what to do!”

Little Mikey said, no doubt rubbing his grubby, chubby hands together with excitement. “I won’t tell Mommy if you don’t!”

“Come on, that’s not right! What if my wife finds out? What would the kids think?”

“It is time for someone to finally make things right in the universe!” said Little Mikey with an evil, sinister laugh, and that was all it took.

So it is with a mixture of pride and shame that I confess to you, dear reader, that on Sept. 24, 2021, one of your favorite adult journalists, a Southern Baptist who was once named the

Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year, a father of two and an otherwise normal, upstanding citizen who pays his taxes on time, urinated on a live frog in Hampton County.

I did it for the irony. I did it for karma. I did it for justice. I did it for every little boy out there in the history of the world of little boys who has ever picked up a mean toady frog and got his curious fingers peed upon.

To all the innocent children everywhere, to all you victims of random and unprovoked frog-pee attacks, you are avenged!

A natural collaborator, Mrs. Dawkins is often found working with small groups of students and teachers or barcoding the latest acquisition of resources for our school.”

Dawkins said her main focus is on making her students aware of the power of literacy.

“Whether being an English Language Arts teacher in the classroom, an instructional literacy coach or a school librarian, my focus has always been to demonstrate to students and fellow teachers that literacy, in any content and format, has the power to transform and unite us,” Dawkins said.

Dawkins began her career as an English/Language Arts teacher at Richland School District Two in Columbia in 2001 and has served as an English/Language Arts teacher in Monroe County, Ga. She eventually moved to Florence and began teaching at Timrod Elementary in 2004.

She has also taught at Moore Intermediate School and Briggs Elementary.

“What sets Ms. Dawkins apart from others school librarians is not just her gracious and friendly disposition, but also her advocacy for all students,” said Arlia Frink, a seventh grade English Language Arts teacher at Southside. “It allows students to see themselves represented in literature and to have equitable access to resources for their education. She is resourceful and possesses gumption, two traits desperately needed in today’s educational culture.”

Dawkins also serves as

adviser to students in Southside’s MakerSpace Club.

“When I think about what makes Mrs. Dawkins special, I am amazed at her patience with us as she leads us through building our robots in MakerSpace,” said Aiden Snow, an eighth-grade student at Southside. “She has a very warm sense of humor,” “Mrs. Dawkins is always positive and always happy to help a person in need,” said Southside eighth-grader ShaMia Reed.

Dawkins believes we all have ability to teach.

“I believe that by building relationships and a strong school community, we all have the ability to nurture students to grow into empowered, empathetic contributors of our ever-changing global community,” she said. “Literacy in all formats allows us the opportunity to acknowledge and promote humanity.”

The district also paid special tribute to teacher of the year finalists: Cynthia Watson, Carver Elementary; Emily Leaphart, Lester Elementary; Taneisha Muldrow, Timrod Elementary.

The Florence 1 Schools teacher of the year application process required each school teachers of the year to complete an application packet earlier this school year. Teachers whose application packets received the highest ratings became honor roll teachers or teacher of the year finalists.

Dawkins, along with the three other finalists, all underwent classroom personal interviews by an outside panel of three teacher of the year selection committee members.

As the Florence 1 Schools Teacher of the Year, Dawkins is eligible to compete for the 2023 State Teacher of the Year.

MISS S.C. VISITS WEST FLORENCE ROTARY

Florence NAACP to host housing assistance events Florence County residents struggling to get caught up on rent due to the COVID-19 pandemic can receive a helping hand from the South Carolina NAACP and Florence Branch of the NAACP. The organizations will host South Carolina Stay Housing Plus assistance project events for the next three Fridays and Saturdays at Trinity Baptist Church at 124 W. Darlington St. The events will be held from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays beginning Oct. 15 and ending Oct. 29, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays beginning Oct. 16 and ending Oct. 30.

South Carolina Stay Plus is a rental and utility assistance

program established in May. It is funded by $272 million from the U.S. Department of the Treasury The program offers up to 12 months back rent plus up to three months of future rental assistance. If a person has been forced to move, that person could be eligible to receive moving costs, hotel/motel expenses and move-in costs. Legal and other fees are also covered by the program.

People seeking assistance should bring a valid identification document, a lease or other evidence of a lease and proof of income.

Symphony returns to PAC Pianist Hoffmeyer serves as guest artist for series opener The Florence Symphony Orchestra took the stage at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center on Oct. 11 for the first concert of the 2021-22 “Bach to Broadway” season.

This season marks the 73rd year for the FSO. A highlight of this “homecoming” concert included guest artist John Hoffmeyer performing Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor by See FSO, Page 2B

Yvette Cummings’ new exhibit, “Disruptive Experiences,” will be on display at University Place Gallery in Downtown Florence Oct. 26 through Dec.16.

The exhibit includes several newly completed works, as well as pieces which have been exhibited widely at a range of galleries nationally over the past two years.

The show is comprised of a variety of media - skillfully executed sculpture, painting, and installation works - which operate as vehicles of narrative expression about the complexity of female adolescence in contemporary American culture.

Damask patterning, florals, vivid colors, and teetering furniture sculptures present a variety of subjects for the viewer to consider. Her list of serious topics includes: surviving sexual assault, body shaming, the pressures of beauty, and other complex struggles of adolescence – all of which are further complicated by media and social norms facing young girls and women today.

Woven into the imagery of floral patterns and vibrant jewel tone colors are the faces and figures of those creating and living through struggle and societal expectations.

‘No To Bad Things’ will be one of many works by artist Yvette Cummings on display at University Place Gallery in Downtown Florence Oct. 26 through Dec. 16.

Cummings received her bachelor’s degree from Kendall College of Art and Design and completed her master’s degree at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Design, Art, Architecture, and Planning. She is currently an assistant professor of Visual Arts in Painting/Drawing at Coastal Carolina University in Conway.

Pee Dee Heart Walk slated for Saturday The annual Pee Dee Heart Walk will take place Saturday at 10 a.m. Registration and the beginning of the walk will take place at the Francis Marion University Performing Arts Center.

People of all ages take part in the event, which is designed to raise funds for the American Heart Association and also raise awareness for heart and vascular disease. There will be a one-mile walk and a three-mile walk around downtown Florence. On each route there will be motivational signs posted to encourage healthy

lifestyle choices.

Survivors of heart disease and strokes will be honored. There will be a tribute wall where loved ones can be remembered. There will also be a pet park for four-legged friends.

Participants may also register and walk in their neighborhood, on the beach, or wherever they feel inspired.

Feelin’ hungry? Kickin’ Chicken Wing and Chili Festival may be the answer The grills will be blazing this Friday in Downtown Florence as the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce hosts the 7th annual Kickin’ Chicken Wing and Chili Festival. The event will take place in the 100 block of South Dargan Street in downtown Florence. from 5 to 9 p.m.

There will be food prepared by competing chefs/teams, music, craft beer and other vendors. The Inland Band is scheduled to perform.

According to the chamber, the Kickin’ Chicken Wing and Chili Festival is estimated to be the third largest downtown event in

terms of crowds by the city of Florence, The festival draws more than 2,000 people each year.

Tickets will be sold in the same manner as for Florence After Five events.

Raines Hospitality, Carolina Bank and Wilcox, Buyck and Williams are the major

sponsors at this year’s event.

Proceeds are used for the Pee Dee Vision Foundation, which supports a number of educational initiatives that the chamber doesn’t have funding for and a variety of other chamber programs.

Hoffmeyer, originally from Florence, grew up attending the Montessori School of Florence and the International

Baccalaureate program at Williams Middle School. He spent his freshman year of high school at West Florence before going off to Phillips Academy in Massachusetts.

He completed his Bachelor of Arts at Princeton, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Society and graduated summa cum laude with a major in comparative literature and a certificate in piano

performance. In 2019, he began his Master of Philosophy at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. While completing his graduate work in modern languages and literature, he has continued his piano studies.

There were lots of fun events, including axe throwing, a beer stein race, a barrel rolling race, and the always popular Running of the Weenies weiner dog race. The Running of the Weenies serves as a fundraiser for the Florence Area Humane Society.

Qualifier wins Open On a blustery Sunday afternoon at the Dr. Eddie Floyd Florence Tennis Center, 20-year-old qualifier Emiliana Arango took control in a final set tiebreaker to upset top-seeded Xiyu Wang to win the McLeod for Health Florence Open.

Arango, from Columbia, battled her way through three sets with Wang, from China. In the tiebreaker, Arango won every point and came away with a 6-3, 0-6, 7-6 (0) win and the tournament title.

Arango is ranked No. 304 in the world by the International Tennis Federation.

The doubles title went to the team of Emily Appleton and Yuriko Miyazaki.

They defeated Robin Anderson and Elysia Boltonin in the championship match.

Strand delivers in double OT Sophomore forward Isak Strand scored the first goal of his career in the 105th minute helping Francis Marion to a 1-0 double-overtime win against Belmont Abbey Saturday in Conference Carolinas men's soccer action.

Francis Marion holds sole possession of first place in the conference standings after Mount Olive dropped a home match to Lees-McRae College on Saturday. The Patriots have only allowed only one goal to conference opponents this season.

Strand's goal came off a double-assist from junior forward Javier Bello, who quickly laid it off for senior midfielder Oliver Peters, who then one-touch crossed it to Strand, 15 yards out in the middle of the box. This is the first overtime win for head coach Luis Rincon and the Patriots this season.

The FMU defense allowed the Crusaders (3-91, 2-6-1) to shoot only five times during the entire match, with one shot being on-target. FMU totaled 16 shots with Bello, Strand and senior forward Nils Gulbran-

son adding three shots each.

Sophomore midfielder Kimo Lemke and defender Sebastian Garcia added two shots, while Conference Carolinas defender of the week Oier Bernaola, midfielder Sam Pollard, and forward Nick Heunig each added one shot.

The Patriots compiled nine corner kicks to the Crusaders' zero.

FMU sophomore goalkeeper Ricardo Rossi registered one save, while Belmont Abbey keeper Ben Knust saved seven shots.

Knust was able to save multiple potential game-winning attempts made by the Patriots all match, until overtime.

It is the fourth shutout of the year for Rossi.

Prior to the match, FMU recognized its eight seniors on this year's roster: Bernaola, Pollard, Peters, Gulbranson, midfielders Jafet Santiago and Gabrielle Cavarero and forwards Mauricio Castorino and Warsay Tekeste.

The Patriots (7-4-2, 6-01) returned to action Tuesday at Mount Olive.
