FCSO offers safety tips for holiday shoppers

DO YOU REMEMBER?

While most of the Christmas shopping has been completed, local stores and shopping malls will still be packed with shoppers searching for post-Christmas bargains. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office is urging shoppers to continue to take precautions. The FCSO offers the following common sense safety tips: • Shop during daylight or in well lighted areas. If you must shop at night, consider taking a friend or family member.

• Park as close to your shopping destination as you can and take notice of where you park.

• When leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings and do not leave your vehicle if there are suspicious people around. This also applies when returning to your vehicle.

Groups combine to spread Christmas joy The Florence Evening Lions, West Florence High School Leos Clubs and Academic Year in America (AYA) students combined in making Christmas very special for 15 underprivileged and special needs children.

Breakfast was provided by Walmart Supercenter, South Irby Street. Afterwards each child was provided a gift from Santa Claus, who was portrayed

by Pastor Bo Myers of Whosoever Church. Each child was then taken on a $100 shopping spree for clothing items.

The conducting of this service project benefits the local community and is one of many ways the club helps deserving individuals. It truly amplifies the motto of Lions Clubs International which is simply “We Serve.”

“This is the signature project for our club,” said Project Chairperson Waylon Hilley. “We look forward to providing the merriest of Christmases possible to and for these children. However, it would not be possible without the continuing help from individuals and local businesses. Money raised during fundraising activities, donations and grants allow the club to do this event and meet other pressing needs in our community. Lion’s club members thank everyone who contributed and volunteered in making this project and others a success. Members are totally committed to helping our community become a better place to live.”

• When returning to your car, make sure you are not carrying more that you are able to prevent being observant to your surroundings.

• When returning to your car, have your car keys in your hand and be ready to press the “Panic Button” if needed.

Plant presents check to United Way of Florence The United Way of Florence County was honored to receive a check for $6,800 from the Duke Energy Robinson Nuclear Plant on Wednesday, Dec.11.

The check was presented by Gail Kirven, the RNP Employee Giving Committee Co-Chair, to the United Way of Florence County’s president Kevin Russell.

Kirven explained that the $6,800 was raised by the Duke Energy Robinson Nuclear Plant employees through various fundraisers they had held for the United

Way at their facility. The fundraisers included events such as a golf tournament and auctioning off prime parking spots. The Duke Energy Robinson Nuclear Plant also holds a more traditional United Way giving campaign with their employees each year.

The funds that were presented on Dec. 11 were in addition to what they plan to donate through their employee campaign.

“We are very blessed to have so many companies run giving campaigns with their employees,” said Russell. “Then we have compa-

nies like this that go the extra mile to raise even more funds and we could not be more grateful. We are already thinking about the additional positive impacts we can have with these funds in our community, especially during this season when the need tends to have a significant increase.”

The United Way of Florence County is currently in the process of fundraising for their 2019-2020 “Share A Little Aloha” campaign.

The funds raised by the campaign will go to help support eighteen nonprofits

that provide 24 muchneeded programs to thousands of those in need in Florence County. For their 2018-2019 campaign, the United Way was able to raise over $882,000 to be allocated out to these nonprofits and programs. Donations for the 2019-2020 “Share A Little Aloha” campaign will be accepted until June of 2020.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetic retinopathy is a common form of diabetes-related eye disease and the leading cause of blindness in American adults. Retinopathy is a progressive eye disease which causes damage to the small blood vessels of the retina which allow one to see fine details. Diabetic retinopathy means these blood vessels are damaged, causing leaking of the vessels, and is the most common cause of irreversible blindness.

Those with diabetes are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. Risk factors include the duration of diabetes, poorly controlled blood sugars, elevated blood pres-

sure, high cholesterol levels, and being pregnant.

Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy may include blurred vision, seeing floating spots, and vision changes lasting more than a few days.

Other symptoms include double vision, difficulty reading, a shadow across the visual field, eye pain or pressure, or difficultly with color perception. However, symptoms of diabetic retinopathy may not

appear until damage has already begun so it is essential to schedule a yearly retinal exam upon diagnosis, especially for those with type 2 diabetes. Patients with type one diabetes should have the initial exam within five years of diagnosis because retinopathy can take up to 5 years to develop after onset of elevated blood sugars, according to the American Diabetes Association.

A retinal exam, also called an ophthalmoscopy or funduscopy, is a painless exam that can be performed by an ophthalmologist or optometrist or at a specialized diabetes center and the results should be shared with your primary care provider. Usually, eye drops

are used to dilate the pupil to allow the provider to examine the back of your eye, including the retina, blood vessels, and the optic nerve.

Remember the risk of diabetic retinopathy increases over time in patients who have diabetes, especially with uncontrolled diabetes, blood pressure, and elevated cholesterol levels. While diabetic retinopathy cannot be reversed, getting an annual retinal exam will allow your eye doctor to diagnose retinopathy early, help you manage the eye disease, and help prevent vision loss.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus Eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon wrote a letter to the editor of New York’s Sun, and a quick response was printed as an unsigned editorial on Sept. 21, 1897. The work of veteran newsman Francis Pharcellus Church has since become history’s most reprinted newspaper editorial, appearing in part or whole in dozens of languages in books, movies, and other editorials, and on posters and stamps.

Following is a reprint of the famous letter and its response. Merry Christmas.

--Dear editor, I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, ‘If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.’

Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? _ Virginia O’Hanlon, 115 West 59th Street.

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age.

They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus. It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

And the best part: I didn’t have to stay up late putting anything together. I did, however, have to pony up for roughly 12 AA batteries.

Grandpa’s Tennessee Christmas When my brother was born in Monterey, Tennessee, in 1941, he was blessed with six living grandmothers. Two greatgreat grandmothers, two great grandmothers, and two grandmothers who all resided in the same small town! By the time he was three, he had renamed his favorite grandma so that she would not be confused with the others. He named her “Grandpa” since he only knew one living grandfather, which was her husband.

All holidays, especially Christmas, were joyous with Grandpa and Granddaddy.

Grandpa wrapped presents with sticky bows and curling ribbons.

They were never beautiful or fancy, but you knew there was something special hidden under one of those sticky bows. Her tree was about the same. Colored lights hung with silver icicles and ornaments collected over the years. Nothing matched anything, and the more tinsel she could hang or throw, the happier she was.

Her time was spent in the kitchen with its wood-burning stove heating the house and warming Granddaddy’s hands as he came in from the lumber mill. He would stoke the fire as the aroma of cinnamon and cloves filled the air. With her apron around her waist and flour scattered across a dough board, Grandpa was on her way to baking her scrumptious jam cakes as gifts for blessed souls.

On Christmas day in 1965, the colored lights were still in their boxes, and no silver icicles hung from any tree. Grandpa quietly made her jam cakes, but Granddaddy was gone. He died suddenly in August of that year, along with Grandpa’s Christmas spirit.

We tried to console her, but she said, “Christmas won’t ever be the same again, so I would just as soon be alone.” It was the first time I ever knew my

Grandpa to lose her infectious joy.

By the next Christmas, Grandpa was back in her warm kitchen, baking an abundance of jam cakes. Her love of Christmas was never quite the same, but her laughter and spirit were healing.

“Shoot, I was just feelin’ sorry for myself! Christmas is about Jesus bein’ born and the joy we feel because He was! I may not have a tree, but I got the Lord!”

A few years later, I was making my Christmas list of what to give who, when I couldn’t think of a gift that was suitable for Grandpa. My typewriter was sitting near me, and I began writing a story about this

remarkable, humble woman.

I was living in Georgia and decided to send the story to the Crossville, Tennessee newspaper. I never received a reply from the editor and began a new search for a meaningful present.

“Lynn, what have you done?!” Grandpa’s voice excitingly asked over the phone.

I immediately began to ponder all my misdeeds in life, and by the way she sounded, I figured God himself must have told her about them all.

When Grandpa moved the twenty miles from Monterey to Crossville after Granddaddy’s death, she would travel back to her hometown every Wednesday to visit family. She always took the Crossville Chronicle for her sister to read. During this weekly road trip, she would stop and chat with her best friend, Hazel, in the Mayland community, which was halfway in between.

The old Dodge pulled into Hazel’s driveway, and when she applied the squeaking brakes, a group of folks ran from the house screaming her name!

Scared to death, she hopped from the car, “What’s happened?! Is anyone sick?”

She yelled.

“Nannie, did you not read that paper in your front seat?”

Hazel asked as she pointed to the passenger seat.

“No, I didn’t have time!

Why? Whose obituary is in there?” She fearfully questioned as she gazed at the surprised faces.

“Honey, bring your paper and let’s get in from the cold.”

Hazel insisted.

Once inside, Grandpa opened the paper to the second page as the crowd gathered around her.

“MERRY CHRISTMAS, GRANDPA!” was the nearly two-inch title running boldly across the top of the page.

There are not many women who would allow their nine grandchildren and fifteen greatgrandchildren to call them Grandpa, or who would bake delicate Christmas jam cakes as prized gifts, or who would love others so much that an indelible mark would be left on countless souls.

Today I write for publications, mainly newspapers, and it all began when love spilled on paper because my heart couldn’t contain it all. Grandpa is now known beyond the Tennessee hills across the country through the stories I tell of this extraordinarily sweet, God-filled, thoughtful soul.

Merry Christmas, Grandpa!

Sheriff’s Office to participate in ‘Sober or Slammer’ initiative Florence County Sheriff’s Office and the Twelfth Circuit Law Enforcement Network will join with the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the Department of Natural Resources and other law enforcement agencies across the state for “Sober or Slammer,” a statewide initiative to prevent alcohol related fatalities in South Carolina during the holidays.

“The member agencies of the Twelfth Circuit Law

Enforcement Network will be out in force during the holiday season to enforce the traffic laws in an effort to reduce alcohol related accidents and fatalities,” said Florence County Sheriff Billy Barnes. “These tragic accidents are always easily preventable. It’s simple. If you drink, don’t drive. Designate a driver, call a friend or even a cab, but don’t get behind the wheel and risk arrest, or even worse, injuring or killing someone else.”

In addition, South Carolina has a “Zero Tolerance” when it comes to the purchase, possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages by anyone under the age of 21. Under this law, anyone under age with any measurable amount of alcohol in their system while operating a motor vehicle breaks the law. Motorists can also report suspected driving under the influence by calling *HP or Emergency 911.

FMU FALL COMMENCEMENT

Raceway donates $5,000 to park Darlington Raceway recently presented a $5,000 check to the Terrence F. Carraway Foundation to go to a memorial park in Darlington, Carraway’s hometown.

The park will serve as a memorial to honor law enforcement officers and law enforcement K9s from across the state.

The donation was raised by the track through the Terrence Carraway Memorial 5K held Nov. 1 at Darlington Raceway. The second annual running of the race this year had 100 runners in it who completed a course under the lights. The race included a lap around the track, a trip through the tunnel and some areas outside the track.

“We are pleased to make this donation in honor of Florence Police Sgt. Terrence Carraway, a lifelong Darlington resident, who lost his life in the line of duty on October 3, 2018,”said Kerry Tharp, president of Darlington Raceway. “We hosted a Terrence Carraway Memorial 5K event at Darlington Raceway on Nov. 1 and donated the proceeds from the event to the Terrence F. Carraway Foundation. The foundation is building a memorial park in Darlington, which will honor fallen heroes from South Carolina in Carraway’s honor. This is a season of giving, so to make this donation and support this worthy cause is something we were proud to do. It’s the right thing to do.”

298 receive diplomas Civil rights leader Sellers tells grads to aim high, reach for their goals Francis Marion University conferred degrees on 298 graduates at its fall commencement ceremonies Saturday, Dec. 14 on the FMU campus.

The graduating class was the thirdlargest fall class in FMU history, buoyed by 76 graduate students who received their diplomas.

FMU’s recent growth has been fueled by students flocking to new graduate programs, particularly within

the School of Health Sciences, and that trend was evident at Saturday’s ceremonies. The grads included 26 new Master of Family Nursing Practice graduates and three Doctors of Nursing Practice.

The School of Education also awarded 37 graduate degrees.

The undergraduates marching included 40 from the FMU School of Business, 39 new nursing graduates

and 28 future teachers.

FMU also awarded honorary degrees to civil rights activist Dr. Cleveland Sellers Jr., veteran educator Marilyn K. Chapman, and wellknown auctioneer and civic leader Bill Yonce.

The School Foundation recently announced the lineup of celebrity dancers who will participate in the 2020 Dancing For Our Future Stars. The annual fundraising event is scheduled for March 26 at the Florence-Darlington Technical College’s Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology.

Grads headed for public service lauded Francis Marion University recognized 23 graduating students for their dedication to public service during a special ceremony Dec. 13 in The Cottage, located on the university’s campus.

Each student was lauded for their decision to begin a career in public service upon graduation from FMU. All 23 students were among the more than 300 students who will march in the university’s fall commencement ceremonies on Dec. 14.

The service recognition ceremony is a traditional event prior to each graduation at FMU. FMU recognizes an array of public service paths including ministry, social service, non-governmental organizations, the military and teaching.This fall’s honorees included teachers, commissioned officers in the U.S. military, and one military inductee who will be attending medical school.

Military, medicine ahead for new officers Two members of Francis Marion University Reserve Officer Training Corps program were commissioned as officers in the U.S. military Dec. 13 ahead of fall commencement exercises.

Both new officers will enter military medical fields and plan to advance their training while serving.

Second Lieutenant Nicholas Smith is entering active duty with the U.S. Army Nursing Corps. Second Lieutenant William Dunson Jr. was commissioned to the South Carolina National Guard’s Medical Service Corps.

Second Lieutenant Smith traveled the world while growing up with his mother,

Kathleen Smith, a former Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy. Kathleen Smith is an FMU Alumnus. During travels that took him from Japan to Germany and a few places in between, Nicholas Smith participated in Jr. ROTC in both the Army and the Air Force as they traveled to the various schools where his mother was teaching as part of the Department of Defense Education Activities (DODEA).

belief that I will succeed.”

Smith has served in the National Guard as a combat medic. He is the first ROTC student at FMU to graduate with a nursing degree.

Smith will be stationed in San Antonio, Texas for training and while he studies in preparation for nursing licensure exam. He plans to pursue a career in critical care and eventually wants to become a Certified Nurse Anesthetist.

“I’m a pretty fun guy, so people are surprised to see my passion for critical care,” Smith said, “but being able to take people from seriously injured through the step down and healing process is all I have ever wanted to do.”

Second Lieutenant. Dunson, a native of Dillon, credits his long time mentor, Sergeant First Class Randy Gray, for encouraging him on his life

path. Dunson joined Jr. ROTC under Gray in his freshman year of high school.

“He (Gray) has supported me every step of the way,” Dunson said. Gray gave Dunson his first officer’s salute as part of Friday’s commissioning ceremony.

Always interested in medicine, Dunson will graduate with a degree in biology. But until a hip injury last year he wasn’t sure what type of medicine he wanted to pursue.

“That injury really showed me that Chiropractic care was where I wanted to be, I love to see patients through the process from injury through healing,” said Dunson.

He will begin his chiropractic education in July at Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg while serving with the South Carolina National Guard.

ing leader in the civil rights movement in South Carolina, delivered the commencement address in which he recounted the struggles of his generation while battling for basic rights and lamented the fact that 50 years after the 1968 Orangeburg Massacre at South Carolina State University there has still not been any official reconciliation.

“We are still not at a postracial period in our state and community because we are not yet able to talk about the issues of race,” said Sellers.

Sellers said, however, that for him the struggle represented a worthwhile life endeavor, and urged graduates to follow similar paths of commitment. Citing the writing of former Morehouse College President Benjamin Mays, Sellers said, “A tragedy in life lies not in not reaching your dreams, but having no dreams to reach…

It’s not failure, but low aim that is a sin.”

Dr. Fred Carter, FMU’s president, lifted up all three honorary degree recipients as examples to the graduates.

“Model your life on what you do for others, just like our three friends here,” said Carter, “and you’ll enjoy success beyond your dreams … and you’ll also sleep pretty darn well every night.”

FMU also recognized 37 graduates who earned Latin honors, and three students who earned University Honors.

Burke, a double major in psychology and sociology, navigated the demands of a rigorous course load along with simply being an active college student with great aplomb. She even earned the honor of graduating Summa Cum Laude with a GPA nearing perfection as a member of the FMU Honors Program.

The journey to becoming a graduate was one that required hard work and dedication on the part of Burke.

Late nights, early mornings, and a spirit of indomitability.

If you ask her, though, it wasn’t just one person that brought her to this point.

“I had really good professors,” Burke says. “The classes themselves were really good, but if I ever had any questions, the professors were always ready to help me do what I needed to do in order to succeed.”

Burke came to Francis Marion with a mind to major in Psychology. It was a subject that she learned to enjoy as a high school student, and something that she saw as presenting a

likely career path.

As a freshman, Burke began to take her general education courses, and within that regimen of study, she took her first Sociology course.

“When I took my first Sociology course at FMU, I thought, ‘Whoa! This is really interesting and right up my alley,’ so I decided to double major.”

Accepting the challenge, Burke buckled down and invested her time in both fields of study.

With help from the faculty of the departments of Psychology and Sociology at Francis Marion, Rhyli hit her stride, and hasn’t looked back.

“The class sizes were really small,” Burke says.

“That helped the professors get to know me and helped me get to know the professors.”

Now a Francis Marion graduate, Burke is planning to continue her education at graduate school, and ultimately hopes to become a social psychologist.

High School math tourney marks 40 years Francis Marion University recently celebrated the longpondered equation of “Francis Marion + the Pee Dee’s top math students” with the answer of the Pee Dee Regional High School Math Tournament.

The tournament noted its 40th year of competition on Tuesday, Dec. 3 in the McNair Science Facility on the FMU campus.

The Pee Dee Regional High School Mathematics Tournament – sponsored by Francis Marion University, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Pee Dee Education Center – consists of two portions: a written competition and a stage competition.

Nineteen high schools and 308 students from ten counties throughout the Pee Dee took part in this year’s tournament.

The winners of the written competition were: First place – Henry Hein, Scholars Academy; Second place – Ryan Bao, Scholars Acad-

emy; Minh Le, Trinity-Byrnes Collegiate School. FCSO deputies honored at luncheon Two Florence County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were recognized for their outstanding service at a 12th Judicial Circuit Law Enforcement Network/Circle Park Behavioral Health Services luncheon held Dec. 13 at the Florence Country Club.

FCSO Corporal Jason Plowden was awarded 12th Circuit LEN DUI Officer of

the Year for 2019. During the LEN yearly reporting period, Corporal Plowden made 104 DUI arrests in Florence County, more than any other officer in the circuit.

Corporal Plowden is assigned to the FCSO Traffic Safety Unit.

In addition, Corporal Sheldon Spann was named 12th Circuit LEN Officer of

the Year for 2019. This award was based on his overall contribution to and support of LEN operations for the 12th Judicial Circuit.

Cpl. Spann is assigned to the Proactive Community Enforcement Team (PACE) and is a member of FCSO SWAT. The 12th Circuit LEN is comprised of all law enforce-

ment agencies in Florence and Marion Counties including the 12th Circuit Solicitor’s Office, SC Highway Patrol and SC State Constables and is sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety. Bruins hire Marlowe Jr. to lead football program South Florence High School has a new head football coach after Drew Marlowe Jr. received approval during the Florence 1 Schools Board of Trustees meeting held December 12.

Marlowe replaces David Prince who resigned the position in November.

South Florence Principal Kim Mack said that she is pleased to have Marlowe joining the Bruin community.

“We are excited to welcome Drew Marlowe to the South Florence family as our new Head Football Coach,”

Mack said. “He brings with him a true passion for taking our football program to the next level.”

Marlowe, a graduate of Francis Marion University, comes to South Florence from Sumter High School where he most recently served as the Associate Head Football Coach and Offensive Coordinator.

“I went to college at Francis Marion so I am familiar with the Florence area,” Marlowe said. “Florence is a really great area. I’ve got a young family and I thought

this was a great opportunity to be able to raise them in Florence.”

While working in Sumter, Marlowe said that he and his team always watched the South Florence football team closely.

“Before we had a change in region schedules, Sumter and South Florence were kind of rivals in our region so I had a first-hand look at their football program,” Marlowe said. “I have always had a lot of respect for it and admired it from afar. The job came open and I was very inter-

ested in it because it is a place you can come and you can win. I am glad that Sumter and South Florence are in separate regions now but it is funny to think about being on this side now. Every year, at Sumter, we always knew that to win the region we had to beat South Florence. That was always a game that we had circled at the beginning of the year.”

Marlowe said that when he starts in his new role he will be observing a lot and finding ways to mesh his strengths with the things

already working well in the South Florence program.

“I don’t know a lot about the inner workings of the program right now so I am looking to come in and see what they already have and see what I can contribute to build it and make it one of the premier high school football programs in the state,” Marlowe said.

Ultimately, though, it is about more than just football.

“I am interested in more than just building the football program,” Marlowe said.

“For me, it is important as the

head football coach to invest in the whole school. I really want to work alongside the administration and the teachers so that we are working hard to develop the school to be an elite school. I want to help impact more than just the football program. I want to have an impact on the school and every student there. I see every student at the school as being part of our program in some way; they have a stake in what we’re doing. We want to represent the school and our community in the right way.”

Patriots prevail behind Hill’s late heroics Sophomore center Winston Hill hit a step-back freethrow-line jumper with 1.7 seconds remaining to earn Francis Marion an 87-85 victory over North Georgia, Dec. 19 in FMU’s Peach Belt Conference opener.

The Patriots improve to 2-5 overall. FMU hosted Young Harris College in a non-conference match-up on Saturday Hill finished the night with 22 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Senior point guard Jaquez Smith also had 22 points and handed out three assists. Smith scored 16 of his points before halftime, while Hill tallied 13 of his points after intermission.

Junior forward Kendall Wall registered 14 points, a career-high nine assists, and seven rebounds. Junior Kainan Pouncy chipped in 12 points.

The Patriot bench scored 11 points for the squad, all in the final 20 minutes “We could not have won tonight without the contributions from our bench players,” said FMU head coach Gary Edwards.

North Georgia (5-5, 0-2) was led by guards Darnell Snyers with 22 points, KJ Jenkins with 17, and Josh Cottrell with 14. Senior guard Ephraim Tshimanga scored six points, but led the Nighthawks with 12 assists and six rebounds.

Women North Georgia 81 Francis Marion 53 North Georgia scored 50 points in the paint and shot 59 percent from the floor in a 81-53 victory over Francis Marion in the Lady Patriots’ Peach Belt Conference opener.

Sophomore center Zaria Woods continued her stellar play as she led Francis Marion (4-3, 0-1) with 20 points on 10-of-11 shooting. She also grabbed 10 rebounds, equalling her career high. It was her second career double-double. Over the past three contests, the Lancaster native has connected on 24-of-29 field goal attempts and is shooting 74.0 percent for the season.

Freshman Kristian Wall came off the bench to score eight points, while junior Kiana Adderton and senior Abigail Bullock added seven points apiece.

Reserve Chloe Savage paced North Georgia (9-1, 20) with 17 points and seven rebounds.
