Rosanne Fortier There is a special young man among us. On February 20, Corporal Christopher Madensky was awarded a Sacrifice Medal for his accomplishments with the Canadian Armed Forces between the years 2001 and 2008. Rocky Mountain Equipment held an award pre s ent at ion for Madensky who is a Heavy Duty Ag Tech in Vegreville. “We are extremely honored to present a Sacrifice Medal to Cpl. Christopher Madensky. This medal is awarded to Canadian Forces former members who sustained an injury during their service.” said Lou Andreola, Regional Commander for Joint Personal Support Unit.

Cpl. Madensky joined the Canadian Armed Forces to bring peace to Canada and other countries. He was on the front line in Afghanistan in 2006. “I liked seeing the changes when we were in Afghanistan. Before we arrived, the children weren’t allowed to play any sports and we made it that they could play again. Kandahar Soccer Fields, which was a public institution, opened up for sporting events.”

Madensky explained. “ The Internationa l Women’s Day at Governor’s Summer Palace allowed women to come into it where it was protected before and they got to take off their burkas. This gave me a sense of purpose. These changes were temporary but if we weren’t there, that wouldn’t have happened.” “[It was challenging] being in downtown Kandahar. We lived just

off the Governor’s Summer Palace. We always got rocketed and those things could really explode! So, even when we were sleeping, it was still dangerous. When we went on patrol, even a piece of garbage could be an improvised explosive device (IED) and an ani-
