PTA Fashion Show 2023

The evening of March 31st saw Newfield’s annual PTA Fashion Show. It was the usual culmination of glamor and fun. The PTA fashion show is a great opportunity for students to either come out of their shells or showcase their confidence in some beautiful outfits provided by David’s Bridal and Black Tie Tuxedo. One of the models, Madison Keenan, described it as “a boss lady moment” and that she loved having the opportunity to do something charitable with her friends. Tickets for the event were $20 which covered the show and dinner. As an attendee/ photographer, I will say that watching my peers get to strut their stuff was so much fun to witness because when else will I get that opportunity? I highly recommend attending next year or even participating.

Footloose

WOW! This year's musical was AMAZING! You could tell how much time and effort was put into everything. The sets were beautiful, the lights were on point, the pit orchestra was amazing, and when it came to the acting and singing, everyone brought their A-Game.

Footloose is a musical about a teen named Ren McCormack, from Chicago, moving to a small midwestern town. After arriving in the town he discovers there is a ban on rock music and dancing, after a couple of teens died on their way to a dance. The town's spiritual leader, and father of Ren’s love interest, Reverend Shaw Moore tries his best to influence the town to stop Ren on his mission to bring back dancing and Rock and Roll.

4

Some notable roles were Alexander Yagud-Wolek as Willard Hewitt, a lovable character who always listens to his mom, Jules Mast as Ren and Heather Austin as Ariel Moore. Although I have only been to a few plays and musicals I know that they are extremely talented and are passionate about theater. They, along with the rest of the cast, put their heart and soul into each and every moment of the musical. And the soundtrack? IT WAS AMAZING. Some of the best songs were Mama Says, I Need a Hero, and Footloose. Considering Footloose is a culmination of the best of 80s Music, the pit orchestra was really what tied everything together. Something really impressive was the improvisation by Sean Reynolds on electric guitar and Joe Bisulca on drumset during a handful of scene changes.

Music Nation in DC

The first day of the trip started bright and early with a call time of 6:15 am and we started off at around 7:40 With a quick pit stop in Delaware, we reached the Jefferson Memorial at 2:20; the performance went wonderful with people stopping to listen. After packing the buses back up, we met our tour guides who stayed with us until we reached the hotel On the drive we saw the Washington Monument and learned that it’s two different colors due to it being built in two phases; the first being private and the second being public. We then visited Carmine’s for dinner where we were served garlic bread, salad, pasta, and chicken parm After that, we went to the Treasury Department building where we learned about Alexander Hamilton, the US’s first Secretary of the Treasury. We then went and saw the White House and lastly, we went to see the Andrew Jackson equestrian statue, which is there to honor Andrew Jackson for winning the battle of New Orleans. The statue itself was the first horse statue to stand on its hind legs without any other support. From there we traveled to the Lincoln Memorial, where we walked the steps and got the chance to stand in the spot where the famous “I Have a Dream” speech was given by Martin Luther King; after we went to see the Vietnam and Korean memorials recognizing the soldiers whose lives were lost during the two wars. Finally, we said goodbye to our tour guides and went to the hotel where we were assigned our rooms and roommates and went to settle down. The night finished off with everyone hanging out in the lobby before the night finally came to an end at 11:00.

6

The second day started early with a 7 am wake-up call; students had breakfast at 8 and were off for the busy day by 9 Starting the day at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, students were able to go on self-guided tours before meeting back at the entrance. Then students traveled to the Pentagon City Mall where they were able to branch off and eat lunch with their friends After lunch, students loaded back onto the bus and went to the National Archives Museum, where after going through security, students were once again able to go on a self-guided tour throughout the museum. Afterward, students watched the Shear Madness Show at The Kennedy Center. The show being an interactive murder mystery, the crowd pieced together the criminal case as the actors performed. After the show, students ate dinner at the Hard Rock Café. Finally, after dinner, everyone loaded back onto the bus and went back to the hotel for the night.

Starting the day with our final 7 am wakeup call breakfast started around 8. During breakfast, many students and some teachers sampled the Lethal Dose hot sauce. The teachers who dared to try it were Dr. Goldstein, Mrs. Bush, Mr. Knapp, and Mr. Murray. After all that, at 9 am students handed in their key cards and loaded onto the bus to head to their final performance at the Naval Memorial After their performance students loaded the buses back off and traveled to Washington Nationals Park Baseball Stadium where they watched the Cleveland Guardians vs the Washington Nationals The game ended closely with the Washington Nationals winning the game with a score of 7-6. Leaving the stadium during the 7th inning, students loaded up into the bus to start heading home Stopping at the Delaware House Travel Plaza students stopped for dinner before loading back onto the buses for the last time before heading back to the school.

The History of Easter

This year, Easter was celebrated on April 9th. It is typically celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon, just after the spring equinox. It is a Christian holiday celebrated all over the world. It is for the rebirth of Jesus Christ, which is said to happen three days after his crucifixion, which happened on Good Friday. It is said that he redeemed the world of all sins. The customary tradition of hiding and finding eggs dates back to the middle ages when people decorated eggs to celebrate. Victorians ate lamb and ham with vegetables and even distributed decorated eggs to children. The word Easter comes from "Eostre,” a goddess of spring. The Easter Bunny symbolizes fertility, and spring represents rebirth. Whether or not you celebrate it, Easter is a beautiful holiday that is a great way that people to create memories.

The History of St. Patrick's Day

St Patrick’s Day is annually celebrated on March 17th. Commonly being an Irish Christian holiday, families traditionally celebrate by attending church in the morning, followed by dancing, drinking, and a feast in the afternoon. The traditional meal is corned beef and cabbage. This day celebrates the death of Saint Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland in the 5th century who was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but later returned to Ireland bringing Christianity to the people. He became the legend that explained the Holy Trinity. The most popular sign to show this is Irish clovers, known as shamrocks. To this day people celebrate with parades and parties all around the world.

March Student of the Month: Delaney Unger

Newfield High School’s March Student of the Month is Delaney Unger. Delaney is involved in three different honor societies at Newfield--National Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society, and Spanish Honor Society. She is also on the Varsity Kickline team. She is equally well-rounded in and out of school. Outside of school, she is a competitive dancer and has experience as a student teacher at her studio. She volunteers with Girl Scouts and has created her own non-profit, the LiveLikeLaney Foundation; a non-profit for kids and families fighting childhood cancer. Having survived childhood cancer herself, this experience has shaped her life significantly.

Despite her experiences, she’s still a typical teenager. If her involvement within the community doesn’t prove that, her love for her family can She cites her twin brother, Cameron, as an inspiration to her, saying, “When he puts his mind to something he does everything in his power to work hard to achieve it, which I admire a lot. He makes sure to get involved with everything he can while still maintaining all A’s. No matter what he has always been there for me and I will always look up to the person he has become.”

Delaney’s compassionate spirit towards the people she cares about the most will help her as she moves beyond high school. She has committed to the University of South Carolina as a public health specialist. Her goal with this degree is to become a child life specialist. (Child Life Specialists work with pediatric patients in hospitals to help them understand procedures and diagnoses, as well as assisting them to become accustomed to long-term hospital stays.) Delaney states that she wants to help hospitalized kids just like she was helped in the past. As she prepares for the Class of 2023’s fast-approaching graduation, she offers some wisdom to lower classmen She advises getting involved within the school and making memories with teachers and friends. “I know it can get stressful at times with the workload and grades but, it will all be worth it in the end so try to have some fun along the way!”

April Student of the Month: Cameron Unger

Newfield High School's April Student of the Month is Cameron Unger. Cameron, twin of last months student of the month, Delaney, had nominations through the roof as well Ranked 9 out of 381 students, Cameron is maintaining an unweighted GPA of 97 6250 and a weighted GPA of 101 6625 He’ll have the potential to graduate in June with more than 35 college credits. The number of things Cameron is involved in, both in and out of school, is almost as high as his unweighted GPA; slight exaggeration there. He’s a member of the Thespian Honor Society, president of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, member of the National Honor Society and the Newfield Drum Club As a trombonist, Cameron’s a member of the Newfield Jazz Band, was a member of the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra, the NYSSMA AllState Symphonic Band and a member of the varsity golf team. Outside of school he works as an assistant for the family’s foundation, Live Like Laney, he volunteers for the Jr. PGA League at Timber Point Golf Course and worked as an assistant at South Shore Golf. Being confident in the answer he’d give, I asked Cameron who or what inspires him to be as hard working and respected as he is His response was twin sister, Delaney If you remember, Cameron was Delaney’s inspiration seeing how strong he was being there for her through her battle for life Understandably, Cameron is inspired by Delaney’s drive to not just fight, but to have the motivation and determination to maintain her passion and keep on dancing. His teachers speak the world of him. Mr. Austin, NHS Band director, amongst other titles, stated Cameron strives for excellence in performance and leadership He exhibits an inherent personal desire for achieving goals that result in blossoming fruition His positive outlook, exemplary work ethic, dependability, leadership qualities and passion for learning and helping others make Cameron an asset to everything he’s a part of.

Mr. Latham, Cameron’s AP US Gov’t and Politics teacher describes him as quietly confident with a grounding that belies his age; a young man who learns for the love of it. Though known for his musical exploits, everyone outside of music nation knows him as a kind, thoughtful and gracious person whose zest for life and learning is infectious Lastly, Dr Goldstein, NHS band director, also with many other titles, describes Cameron as a scholar-athlete, an artist and an allaround good, honest and kind gentleman. Cameron is headed to University of South Carolina in the fall where he will major in music education with a concentration in music performance. As the stud musician he is, Cameron has already auditioned and earned his spot in USC’s marching band named, The Carolina Band, also known as The Mighty Sound of the Southeast Cameron, you’re an exceptional young man to say the least I’m confident when you arrive on the campus of USC post-graduation, it won’t take long for all South Carolina Gamecocks to see you for the asset you’ll quickly become. Congratulations on being voted Newfield’s Student of the Month for April!

Clublicity: Mock Trial Makes it to the Quarte

For the first time in Newfield history, the Newfield Mock Trial Team made it to the quarter-finals of the county championships that took place in the Central Islip Criminal Courthouse. This year's case saw Plaintiff Remington Stone, played by James Keenan, go up against the defendant, cantankerous curmudgeon, Marley Miser, played by Cristopher Peralta. The story goes that Mr. Stone was electrocuted on the job at Mr. Miser’s home, but was it the fault of Mr. Miser’s unsafe work conditions, or Mr. Stone’s alleged intoxication? The verdict changes every trial it seems.

The preliminary four rounds resulted in a 3-1 record for Newfield, with wins against Mattituck, Sachem East, and Half Hollow Hills East, and 1 point loss to Ward Melville. The team was the 8th seed during the playoffs and was once again matched against Half Hollow Hills East but on opposite sides of the case where they once again defeated them. Sadly the team lost the quarter-finals by 1 point (again) to East Hampton’s team. Although the defeat came with much sadness it also had the team reflecting on the vast amount of progress they made from the previous year, where by week 3, they were ranked 23rd and had very little prospect of making it to the playoffs, which they didn't. With a majority of the team being composed of juniors this year, next year's team will be senior-dominated and shows lots of promise.

Clublicity: National Art Honor Society

This year is rapidly coming to a close, and it seems the perfect time to reminisce on some of the wonderful achievements of Newfield’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS). This year as the school began to return to regular, pre-COVID event schedules, NAHS was able to provide facepainting at Trick-or-Treat Street. This sparked a trend of offering facepainting at other events such as the fall drama’s Santa’s Workshop and Bicycle Path’s Sweetheart Dance. We also worked on the mural for Mr. Von Bargen’s classroom and helped paint a tree mural at New Lane.

NAHS also had some exciting field trips this year. We went to the Parrish Museum in the fall to see an exhibition by Mel Kendrick, an artist best known for his work in sculpture with materials like wood, metal, and paper On that trip, we also had the opportunity to go ice skating at the South Hampton Ice Rink. I actually learned to skate for the first time! This spring we went to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City and got to see many famous works of art, from Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night to Salvador Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory.

To close the year some members volunteered at the art show on April 28th. We also recently had our officer elections for next year and are excited to pass the torch and have a very successful year to come!

Finding My Irish Roots Through Music: A Playlist

1. The Wild Rover - The Irish Rovers

Even as a kid, this was my all-time favorite song to sing on St. Patrick's Day. I didn't understand my mother's love for the holiday since my family has been American for generations, but I loved shouting along to the extremely catchy chorus.

2. Welcome to the Rock - Come From Away Original Broadway Cast Recording

I didn't know it at the time, but my infatuation with musical theater would eventually, send me backward in time to connect with my ancestry. A musical called Come From Away captivated me with its unique sound that came straight out of Newfoundland, where the story is set. I was charmed by the unique instrumentation, especially the intricate percussion instruments.

3. Donkey Riding - Great Big Sea

The band Great Big Sea was recommended to me by a friend who shared my obsession with Come From Away, and I wasn't sold at first, but by this song? I was hooked. I fell into an obsession with sea shanties, though I would never show anyone that side of my music taste.

4. Gaol Ise Gaol I - Kathleen MacInnes

I don't remember how I found this song, if I'm being honest. But, always aware of my Irish heritage thanks to St. Patrick's Days of the past--shouting The Wild Rover, I was intrigued by the idea of a song done entirely in Gaelic Of course, this spurred a new musical obsession, this time with traditional folk from the Ireland and Scotland areas.

20

5. The Parting Glass - The Wellermen, Lauren Paley

One part sea shanty, one part Scottish folk; it was a match made in Heaven. I was listening to this when my mom caught a glimpse at my Spotify, and we had a brief conversation about it, during which I shared my love for the overall genre. Later on, she would convince me to try my hand at the bodhran, a traditional Irish drum heard in many of my favorite songs.

6. May the Road Rise to Meet You - Celtic Thunder

This song was originally a simple prayer or blessing by the same name, but it was made into a song. Notably, there is one version of its words hung in my living room, and another in my dining room. This is when I realized just how Irish I am. In other words, I realized just how much of my heritage had been preserved through the hardships faced by the Irish people hundreds of years ago. It may not be much, but it some way, the scraps are a miracle.

7. Nead na Lachan - Me (& Orla Fallon)

To say I performed this song is an understatement. I played the bodhrán along with it on a playback going at half the speed of the real thing But it was mine, and it was, technically, the first time I played alongside something that wasn't a practice track. Am I any good? Debatable But to me, the bodhrán is a way to connect with the past of my family. It, and all the music that led me to it, have turned my Irish heritage from something that belongs solely to my mother to something I could have real proof of, and have real pride in it being mine.

Poems Tiny Little Birds

It's 8 o'clock on a warm spring morning and you're on your way to the bus. The cool crisp air and foggy morning, All you hear are the birds chirping. The world seemed so big to us when we were young, All we want to do is become older, taller, and smarter.

Now we wish for those tiny little birds to return. Simple and wild, That's how it was Our feet on the grass wet with dew And our minds filled with endless possibilities. We didn't realize it back then, But we were in our golden age We wanted to grow up so fast but look at us now, Yearning for a second more of experiencing childhood.

The time we dreamed of going to high school, graduating, and being an adult Look at us now, the world doesn't seem as colorful and big as it used to be. We hear the quote "live in the present, not in the fast or future"

We never understood it well, But now I look back and learn to cherish the smiles, hugs, and laughter. For you may never know when your body laughs, or when you snort while laughing.

As one of the beloved childhood movic, The Lion King says

" Tomorrow is a mystery Yesterday is history Live today, it's a gift that's why they call it present"

The Prince Of Beauty

This room was once full

Laughter still etched on its walls

The many feet that cross this floor left marks of woe

Not sure how one lasts in here

No more than nine days can one stay sane

Yet the most unlikely of them all

A child of meager age

No more than nine could he be

Only child to be left in here

His family long departed

All nine of his blood have perished

For many stood in this room

Never once has one lived past nine days

So this child of nine sits in the room

A bizarre shape with even more disgusting smell

The fleshy wall with its thousand eyes

All focused on the child of nine

How long would he last?

Could he tell which eyes were once his family?

One crude woman sat and watched

A back hunched and disfigured

A gorgeous face on top of a disgusting body

She was rotting from within

And she needed a new body

Only one that would survive the test of eyes

Could sustain the witch's vice soul

And here it was, the boy of nine years The nine th body that she would possess

The child barely alive and with no thoughts in his head

An empty shell

Who only dreamt of seeing his family again

But could he meet their eyes?

I mean they were lookin right at him?

Or would he too become the floor

Like the ones before him

Would he give up and melt into the floor?

Only time would tell

But the witch watched and laughed

For soon she too would look of child's age

So for now she waited with greedy eyes and grotesque form
