However, I spend as much time as possible at my house in Surf City. A lifelong photography enthusiast, I opened Froggy Oaks Photography in 2019 as a sideline to my information technology job. The Froggy Oaks name was inspired by the tree frog–filled live oaks surrounding the Surf City house. Initially Froggy Oaks Photography focused on landscape and wildlife photography (primarily birds) but quickly expanded into headshot and portrait photography utilizing my skills with lighting in studio and on location. A student of New York photographer Lindsay Adler, I enjoy exploring creative and dramatic lighting in addition to natural light photography.

When you live in a coastal area, the stretch of time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is a somewhat conflicted state. On one hand, it’s summer — the most blissful three months of the year, filled with early morning beach walks, warm-ocean swims and leisurely sunset suppers on the patio. On the other hand, it’s high tourist season, filled with more traffic, long lines at the coffee and doughnut shops and fierce competition for the dinner reservations and beach access parking.

But when you live in a coastal area, sharing your hometown with visitors for part of the year is a trade-off you’re willing to make. You know that visitors make it possible for you to live in a place that you love. You welcome the influx of customers who keep the local businesses afloat, and you appreciate that it’s visitors who keep the local economy churning. And, very often, you find that you enjoy meeting new people from around the country and helping them find their way around your town.

So, to all you summer visitors out there — welcome to the Topsail area!

Visiting his parrot sanctuary in Pink Hill is a way to help him in his efforts, so he welcomes visitors. We also catch up several volunteers in the Topsail Turtle Project and learn about what it takes to help protect Topsail Island’s nesting sea turtles.

We meet a few of the local business owners, including a photographer, an interior designer and two of the area’s top restaurateurs. We give you the rundown on the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and show you where to go when you’re looking for farm-fresh fruits and vegetables to complement your seafood dinners. Tropical Sips Sipping on this Mermaid Rum Punch will transport you to a tropical island on a perfect summer day.

My spouse and I just finished re-staining our patio, and it was a long, hot, sweaty labor of love. We put all the furniture back on the patio and sat down to admire our work. The color we had selected turned out to be a bit more blue than the grey, but it looked even better than I imagined — more like the color of the deep part of the ocean. With all that hard work we were in need of a nice cool, crisp cocktail to reward ourselves.

I went to the kitchen and grabbed pineapple juice and limes. I then proceeded to the bar to get both rums we had. Since the patio turned out bluer than anticipated, I selected the Blue Curacao as well. This cocktail may sound like it would be super sweet, but the fresh-squeezed lime juice helps to balance out the sweetness and create a unique flavor in this punch.

After simply stirring the ingredients together in a glass and adding a few pieces of fruit for presentation, I served the cocktails out on our newly painted patio. That first sip brought about such a feeling of accomplishment and relaxation. The beautiful shade of greenish-blue created in this drink is reminiscent of the ocean, and the flavor provides all the hints of summer, so I named it Mermaid Rum Punch.

This recipe is perfect for two drinks, but you can certainly multiply the ingredients to make a big batch for a party as well.

Next time you finish a DIY project at your home, finish it off with a Mermaid Rum Punch. I hope you enjoy this cocktail as much as we did!

MERMAID RUM PUNCH Makes 2 drinks

INGREDIENTS 2 ounces Captain Morgan Spiced Rum 2 ounces coconut rum 8 ounces pineapple juice 1 ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice splash of Blue Curacao slices of pineapple and a cherry for garnish

METHOD Fill two glasses with ice.

Divide the Captain Morgan, coconut rum, pineapple juice, lime juice and Blue Curacao into each glass and stir to create a nice greenish-blue color.

Add pineapple slices and cherries for garnish.

Fancy Fruit

A few extra ingredients can elevate fruit salad from dull to divine.

Is your idea of fruit salad a cup of mushy fruit swimming around in over-sweetened juice with a single cherry? If so, this recipe will inspire you to start thinking outside the box. In my opinion, there’s a fruit salad for every occasion, from a random afternoon snack to a light lunch for your family to an appetizing dinner starter. This recipe is proof that fruit salad done correctly can be many things: elegant, zesty, surprising, colorful and refreshing.

This fancy fruit salad is great to serve after a day in the sun. My family and I had been on the beach all morning, and we were craving something fresh and light yet filling. My mind went right to fruit salad — a bowl of fresh, ripe fruit, bursting with flavor and color — but I wanted something different from the norm.

I looked around my kitchen and found what I needed. My son loves the easy-to-peel Little Cutie clementines so we always have those on hand.

Clementines are high in vitamin C, and we can all use a boost of that. I also had some pears, which are a good source of potassium and fiber. I thought about kicking it up a notch and lightly grilling the pear for an even fancier presentation, but in this case time did not allow. We keep dried cranberries in our home at all times, so of course I used those too. I feel like people overlook cranberries or assume they are only used for holiday recipes, but they add a burst of flavor to recipes all year round and are rich in antioxidants, which is good for your gut-health and cancer prevention.

For the dressing, I used mascarpone, leftover from a pasta dish I created early in the week, as the base. Mixed with a little sweetener and a tangy bite of vinegar, the dressing was perfect for the selected fruit.

When I served this salad to my spouse and son, they were delightfully surprised at the simple but complex flavors.

This salad also keeps well in the refrigerator, so you don't have to rush at the last minute if you want to serve it later.

Try this light but filling fruit salad for a different approach that is sure to wow your family.

WHAT’S COOKIN’

Pear, Clementine, Cranberry and Mascarpone Fruit Salad Serves 4

INGREDIENTS FOR THE DRESSING:

¼ cup honey ¼ cup orange juice ½ cup mascarpone 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 teaspoon sugar FOR THE FRUIT SALAD

4 pears (peeled, cubed) 6 Little Cutie clementines (peeled and separated) ¹/ 3 cup dried cranberries ¹/ 3 chopped walnuts ¼ cup fresh mint (chopped) 2 cups baby arugula

METHOD Combine all the ingredients for the dressing in a medium bowl and mix well.

Set aside.

Combine the pears, clementines, cranberries, walnuts and mint in a medium bowl and toss to mix.

Plate by placing a handful of baby arugula on a plate, top with the fruit salad and drizzle with desired amount of dressing.

Holden and Hunter Griffeth have been on surfboards since they were old enough to walk. Now the brothers want to share their passion and get others on a surfboard at the Topsail Island Surf School. Launched just this season, they bring surf lessons to you at your beach house. You’ll be catching waves before you can shout “Yewww!”

Holden has surfed up and down the North Carolina coast and in Florida, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. He plans to surf in Bali, a surfer’s paradise known for its consistent waves and near perfect reef breaks. Reef breaks can occur in deep water where the presence of a reef causes the waves to break. #REELKIDSFISH Surf City Ocean Pier is seeking sponsors and volunteers for its July Children’s Fishing Competition.

Surf City Ocean Pier has some announcements about its annual Children's Fishing Competition and Celebration. The pier has hosted the event for more than 10 years but had to cancel it for the past couple of years due to COVID and the addition of paid parking in the area. The pier parking lot can’t accommodate all the kids who want to fish on just one day, especially if that day is the 4th of July.

So, in everyone's best interest, the tournament will now be spread out throughout the month of July. The Children’s Fishing Competition #ReelKidsFish at #SurfCityPier is now a month-long event. Instead of just one day, the pier will host the children every Thursday in the month of July. EXPANDING THE MISSION All Saints Catholic Church raises $3.1 million to build a new church in Hampstead.

Bishop Luis Rafael Zarama of the Diocese of Raleigh celebrated with parishioners from All Saints Catholic Church in Hampstead on May 5. The blessing came as All Saints Catholic Church announced that they have secured $3.1 million dollars in gifts and pledges from their vibrant, faith-filled community.

The money will be used to help fund a $7.5 million expansion project. The parish plans to erect a 750-seat church and program support areas for the largely expanding faith community in eastern Pender County. Construction will begin in early 2023.

SAFE HAVEN N.C. Coastal Land Trust’s purchase of Hutaff Island forever protects the last privately owned undeveloped barrier island in North Carolina.

Warm, moist air blew across my face. Fog shrouded the island we sought, its dunes and salt marsh concealed by droplets so fine they barely registered on my windbreaker.

In the channel separating the island from the salt marsh behind, the sun struggled, breaking through briefly to offer the promise of what would come. Hampstead Bypass Groundbreaking

over the years has posed these needs to meet the demands of our growing service area.

Over the last six years, the Pender County EMS staff has been through so much: working through two major hurricanes, COVID, a paramedic shortage, inf lation, supply chain shortage, long hospital ER wait times, lack of reimbursements and lower pay scales.

Pender County and N.C. Department of Transportation officials recently broke ground on the long-awaited U.S. Highway 17 Hampstead Bypass project.

Environmental studies for the project began in 2005, but delays held the project up for nearly 17 years. The bypass will improve traffic and safety along the U.S. 17 corridor around the Hampstead area. NCDOT estimates the project will cost $429 million. Construction will be in two sections, and is slated to finish by 2030.

The project's first section is from N.C. 210 to north of Hampstead. The second section is from N.C. 140 to N.C. 210. It will bring connections to Pender, New Hanover, Brunswick and Onslow counties via U.S. 17 and I-40.

NCDOT Secretary Eric Boyette commented at the groundbreaking ceremony: “I think there are about 43,000 cars a day on that highway so being able to have the opportunity to make it less congested to make it safer is what the department's about.”

Pender EMS & Fire, Inc. Celebrates National EMS Week Pender EMS & Fire, Inc. celebrated National EMS Week in May. Established in 1974, National EMS Week is an annual campaign that serves to honor professionals who provide emergency medical services in communities across the country. The 2022 theme was “Rising to the Challenge” – a fitting sentiment as the EMS industry has encountered a multitude of hardships during recent years.

Growth in Pender County created the need to staff three volunteer stations with paid personnel 24/7, and Pender EMS & Fire, Inc. has built and staffed three additional stations. Additionally, Pender staffs Union Rescue Squad, Maple Hill VFD and Penderlea VFD with paid personnel.

The steady increase in call volume and decline in volunteers

The population growth in Pender County also has put a strain on EMS as they try to keep up with the increase in call volume. Pender EMS & Fire, Inc. responded to more than 10,000 calls this fiscal year, and projections suggest that the total number of calls for the current year will surpass last year’s total. When you factor in tourist season at the beach, longer transport times due to traffic, and delays at the hospital, there are days when crews are running nonstop for 24hour shifts. Yet they have continued to show up and accept the challenge to save lives and preserve property.

Pender EMS and Fire Inc. provides eight EMS units, covers six Pender Fire districts, provides paid staff for two Volunteer Fire Stations, Rescue and multiple special operations that are available 24 hours a day. They have limited volunteers in EMS and Fire because of today’s cost of living and the continued educational requirements/demands that each position requires. They are a private nonprofit agency that is contracted by Pender County to provide this level of service, and their main goal as the EMS agency since 2003 that started as three separate entities to our current standing of Pender EMS and Fire Inc. and Union Rescue is to provide the highest level of service in a timely manner. They merged with three Volunteer Fire Departments nine years ago again to improve the staffing and coverage to the citizens.

Chief Everett Baysden says, “It’s important to recognize all first responders for their commitment and care. Especially during these recent trying times. We’re so proud and pleased of the job all of members of Pender EMS and Fire has provided to the citizens and visitors of Pender County.”

EmergeOrtho Coastal Region accurately describes who we are and where we serve.” Zachary Welch, the region’s Executive Director, emphasized that the only change is to the practice’s regional name. “It does not affect patient care in any way,” he said.

“Patients will continue to have access to the same highquality, patient-centered orthopedic care and services offered by our current providers at all of our regional EmergeOrtho locations.” The name change is being reflected in the practice’s physical and online presence, including on its website and across all social media channels, such as Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

Unsung Heroes Hundreds of Topsail Turtle Project volunteers help ensure that Topsail Island’s sea turtle hatchlings make it from sand to sea.

It only takes one walk on the beach in the middle of summer to see why Topsail Island is a sea turtle sanctuary. During the height of the season, it’s not unusual to see 100 nests staked out along the dunes, waiting for baby hatchlings to emerge and find their way to their new home in the ocean.

Loggerhead turtles love Topsail and come back every few years to lay their eggs here.

The task of finding these nests goes to a group of dedicated volunteers known as the Topsail Turtle Project, a division of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center in Surf City. While the center does amazing work with sick and injured turtles throughout the year, the Turtle Project volunteers are getting up early, staying up late and watching for signs of new nests and new baby sea turtles throughout the summer months.

Starting in May, the group of several hundred volunteers walks all 26 miles of beach on Topsail Island every single day, rain or sun, looking for tracks. The group is led by Terry Meyer, who has been volunteering to help save the sea turtles since 1996 and directing the Turtle Project program since 2000.

Meyer is also the point person for people who find stranded turtles and is responsible for

doing all the reporting for the state on turtle activity on the island. She also conducts new volunteer orientation sessions each spring.

The 26 miles of beach are divided into five sections for the Turtle Project. Each of those sections is led by a coordinator or, in the case of the far north end, three coordinators. Connie Pletl, Pam Kosar and Marie Palmer co-coordinate the volunteers on the north end of the island, which is typically the busiest area for turtle nesting.

Every morning from the first of May through the end of August, all eight of the coordinators must get up and get

When they confirm that there is a nest with eggs, Pletl’s responsibility is to collect the data and send it to Meyer. Pletl started out as a volunteer walker in the early 2000s, having learned about it as a freelance writer and editor for the Topsail Voice newspaper. The turtle hospital was among her assignments and, after getting to know founder Jean Beasley well, Pletl decided it was time to be part of the Turtle Project herself.

About 60 days after the nest is laid, the eggs will start to hatch. At that

dressed before the sun rises so they can be ready for that phone call. Some mornings, they get multiple phone calls.

The walkers find tracks that may or may not lead to a nest.

The coordinators must go out to the beach and check to see if eggs have been laid or if it is what is known as a “false crawl.”

Sometimes the mother sea turtle decides it’s not the right spot or she gets scared off by people or noise in the area.

On the far north end, it is Pam Kosar who gets the calls from the volunteer walkers. Kosar has been volunteering since 2006, starting out as a substitute walker. When a volunteer calls in to say they’ve found tracks, Kosar then calls Palmer and Pletl so they can all go out to the beach to check out the

point, Palmer takes on the responsibility of coordinating volunteer nest sitters. The first step in helping the hatchlings find their way out to sea is to build a “ramp,” a smooth track that leads directly to the water.

Then Palmer will need to enlist at least five or six volunteers to sit with the nest and make sure the baby sea turtles make their way to the water. The volunteer nest sitters might also have to knock on doors of nearby homes and ask the occupants to turn off their outside lights to eliminate the distractions for the young sea turtles.

Palmer, who has been volunteering since 2014, relates that one of her most memorable times sitting with a nest was when Summer 2022

the eggs hatched during a full moon, saying it was a “spectacular” moment. Another instance involves hatchlings that were enticed by bright lights on a home nearby and ended up going the wrong way. She and Pletl, along with a very helpful and concerned family, helped 90 baby sea turtles find their way back to the water that night.

Meyer, the coordinators and the hundreds of walkers and nest sitters are all volunteers, dedicating their time each and every day to give the sea turtles a better chance at survival. In the early days of the Turtle Project, walkers would have several days a week assigned to them.

In fact, Meyer recalls being asked how many days she could walk in the beginning. Now, as more people become interested, the volunteer list has expanded, and each walker is typically assigned one day a week for about a mile stretch of beach. There is also a list of substitutes, volunteers willing to fill in when needed if the regular walker is sick or on vacation.

During the summer, volunteering on the Turtle Project can be an all-morning and all-evening activity. The nest sitters, who can be the people who first found the tracks as well as other volunteers, will spend several hours each evening waiting for that exciting moment when the first baby emerges out of the sand.

Kathy Zagzebski, director of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue & Rehabilitation Center since February, says the Turtle Project volunteers have “an amazing amount of dedication.”

They are not only helping to save the amazing sea turtles that live “in our own backyard,” but “at the same time, they are contributing to a worldwide body of knowledge.”

The data that is gathered from the nests, Zagzebski emphasizes, is “really important to understanding sea turtle biology.” The volunteers on the Turtle Project, especially the coordinators who collect and submit all the data around the nests, eggs, and hatchlings are “contributing to a worldwide body of knowledge.”

Zagzebski is excited about the grassroots efforts to protect the sea turtles on Topsail. A big piece of that is the education aspect of their work. It’s important to the volunteers to be able to share information about the sea turtles with residents and visitors as they investigate potential nests and watch for hatchlings. Teaching others about the importance of turning off lights, filling in holes and picking up trash along the beach is a critical part of the sea turtle project.

Sharing their knowledge of sea turtles is incredibly rewarding for these volunteers, as is the ability to do their part toward helping the sea turtles not only survive but also thrive here on their sanctuary island. 

With a new Surf City vacation house as home base, VLV Designs expands its interior design services to the Topsail area.

IT’S A BEAUTIFUL THING WHEN A CAREER AND A PASSION COME TOGETHER, AND FOR INTERIOR DESIGNER VICTORIA VALENTINAS, LIFE IS ALL ABOUT MAKING THINGS BEAUTIFUL. After recently moving into her family’s new vacation home in Surf City, she is now introducing her Greensboro-based business, VLV Designs, to the shores of Topsail Island. Known in the industry for bringing design dreams to life, Valentinas is excited to turn her passion for beauty into her own dream beach home come true.

Growing up outside of Chicago, Valentinas visited different North Carolina beaches every summer on family vacations with her parents and sister. Her family loved North Carolina and dreamt of one day owning their own beach house along the coast.

When it came time for college and knowing she wanted to study interior design, Valentinas chose High Point University, which provided the perfect opportunity for her parents to also relocate to the Pinehurst area for their retirement. After graduating, Valentinas began a decade-long career in the furniture industry, but her life changed course in the spring of 2020.

“I was traveling 90% percent of the time for work, so when COVID happened and the world shut down, my position was eliminated,” Valentinas says. “It was actually a blessing in Summer 2022

disguise, because I’d always wanted to have my own interior design business, and it was a great opportunity with everyone staying put and investing in their home.”

During the pandemic Valentinas and her family continued going on family vacations, renting several homes on different beaches before deciding it was the perfect time to consider buying their own space. Her parents searched the market up and down the coast, and it wasn’t long before they found their way over the bridge and into Surf City.

“Coming onto the island is when it hit them that this could be it, our home away from home,” Valentinas says.

“Driving over the bridge, they saw all of the beautiful colors and bright houses, plus being surrounded by water everywhere they looked, it instantly made them feel like they were on vacation.”

Valentinas’ parents soon found what they were looking for and purchased a home on North New River Road at the end of 2021. Believing every good beach house deserves an official name, and inspired by a shared love of oysters, the family agreed the term “Oyster Oasis” fit their new residence perfectly.

After some fresh paint and new floors, it was time for Valentinas to put her design skills to work transforming the space into her family’s dream beach house, a task she happily shared with her mother.

“My mom helps out a lot with my interior design business, and we’ve always been drawn to elements of the coastal look, so to finally have our own beach house to design was really exciting,” Valentinas says. “We definitely wanted it to have a coastal chic vibe without the stereotypical seashells on the bedspreads, so our idea was to make it an unexpected beach house by focusing on the beauty of the outside and bringing that in.”

Valentinas decided to use mixed materials, heavy textures and lots of color to give each room its own dramatic vibe while still feeling like a peaceful coastal getaway. She says each of the home’s four bedrooms now has a unique design theme. The tribal Bohemian bedroom features unexpected colors of black and cream to create a beachy vibe using natural elements and many textures, while the coastal Bohemian bedroom is full of

client’s favorite parts of the home and make those the statement feature,” she says. “In our house the back windows face the Intracoastal and our dock, so we’re intentionally not doing any window treatments or placing a chandelier over the table to ensure that absolutely nothing blocks the view.

We've already had family meals there while watching the sunset, and it feels like we have our own little restaurant.”

For the master bedroom, Valentinas went for a coastal island style using neutrals and blues to give her parents a tranquil, getaway feeling. Finally, the main guestroom provided Valentinas and her mom the chance to really focus on the beach element of the home, featuring traditional colors of coral, white and blue to help guests feel like they’re on a true coastal vacation.

Valentinas considers the dining room to be the focal point of the home because of its view of the Intracoastal Waterway.

“I love doing beach landscapes and abstract paintings, whether it be the sunrise, the sunset, the marsh or our coast, and highlighting all of the beauty of the island.”

Having a residence on Topsail allows Valentinas to expand her business and devote time to working on projects in the area. VLV Designs currently services not only clients in Greensboro, where she lives, but also both the Pinehurst and Charlotte areas, where her parents and sister live respectively.

Having a second home on Surf City means she can now visit the island every month and take on work for clients here, whether they need help with design or art services for their main residences or vacation homes.

“I look forward to getting to know the locals and also being of assistance to anyone coming to the area to purchase a vacation home,” Valentinas says.

“Especially with a vacation home, there are a lot of logistics that go into it and you don't want to spend all your trips getting your house together. Ces Erdman can’t remember a time when his life didn’t revolve around birds. Growing up in a household of avian enthusiasts, he owned his first pet parrot at the age of 3. His parents, both active members of a community bird club, at one point even ran a bird-sitting business from home. With so many childhood years spent surrounded by birds, Erdman’s current role as director and founder of the Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary seems predestined.

“I do remember thinking at one point that I’d never have parrots when I grew up, because I hated having them in our house,” he says. “They were so loud, and my dad always kept the temperature at 78 degrees so it felt like a rainforest inside.”

When Erdman left home for college, he left the birds behind as well. It wasn’t long, however, before he actually missed having them around. After graduating he decided to get a pet parrot once more. He also started the Cape Fear Parrot Club, in which bird owners could gather monthly to socialize and share tips and suggestions. Before he knew it, people started bringing him their unwanted parrots in hopes he would either keep them or help find them a new home.

“Soon enough I had four birds of my own,” he says. “I loved them, but they were difficult, loud and destructive. I wasn’t going to get rid of them because it seemed like everyone else was getting rid of theirs. So I started wondering why they were so bad, and it turned out they were bored.”

Although parrots are currently the fourthmost popular pets in America, keeping them confined inside a home can be challenging.

Because parrots have an intellectual aptitude comparable to that of chimpanzees or dolphins, residential living does not provide them with adequate mental stimulation.

Realizing this, Erdman took a chance and moved his four parrots outside to his back yard, and the results were instant.

“It solved their behavior issues immediately,” he says. “The outdoor environment was more natural to them, with rain, sun, wind and fresh air. I could tell they were so happy, just being able to live outside and be a bird.”

Motivated to create a safe haven for other birds

Ces Erdman founded Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary as a retirement home for parrots, which can live up to 90 years.

needing a new home, Erdman decided to grow his aviary. In 2013 he moved his birds to a lot of land in Pink Hill, and Cape Fear Parrot Rescue officially became a 501c3 nonprofit. It wasn’t long before birds started coming in from all over the country, most from dedicated owners needing another option for their parrots due to a sudden life change.

“Some owners say they’d never rehome their bird, but most people just can’t have a pet for 45 years.

Small parrots can live up to 30 years, and the larger ones can live to be 80 or 90 years old. So the chances of you keeping a bird its whole life are slim to none. We take in birds people can’t keep, and instead of rehoming them, they stay here forever. I call it their retirement home.”

Studies estimate the number of parrots living in captivity in the United States to be anywhere from eight to 16 million, not including the millions more currently residing in shelters, zoos, sanctuaries and breeding facilities.

The high level of care parrots demand of their owners can prove overwhelming, leading many bird owners to return their birds to pet stores, sanctuaries or other homes.

With an average lifespan of more than 60 years, a typical parrot may live with as many as 25 to 30 different owners.

“The reason the sanctuary exists is because parrots are still being bred by the millions, and many end up with nowhere to go,” Erdman says. “There are lots of really good people who just cannot take care of their bird anymore, and their options are to either rehome them or put them in a sanctuary like ours, where they can live more like a bird again.”

Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary currently houses 518 birds from more than 50 species and is constantly operating at full capacity. As the only facility of its kind in North Carolina, and one of only a handful across the country, Erdman says he gets calls from bird owners from all over who need help.

“We never say no,” Erdman says.

“Even if we’re completely full, owners can always pay to have their own enclosure built. We even had

two birds from Maine come to us on a private jet.”

The sanctuary has also aided in parrot rescue efforts in several hoarding cases. Two weeks after Hurricane Florence in 2018, Erdman and his team agreed to take in an additional 66 birds from a group of 601 surrendered from a 1,000 square-foot house in Ohio.

“It was a lot to handle, especially since we had just returned to the sanctuary after evacuating all of our own birds for the hurricane,” Erdman remembers.

During the pandemic Erdman moved to the sanctuary to live on site as the full-time caretaker and to provide a constant presence in the event of an emergency situation.

Through funding from grants such as Bob Barker's DJ&T and donations, he is able to purchase food and equipment and expand the Summer 2022

aviaries to increase the sanctuary's capacity.

As for Erdman’s three personal pet parrots (one, Charlie, who was famous for being a painter, unfortunately passed away in 2020), they have lived at the sanctuary for nearly 10 years and have never appeared happier.

“They’re totally different birds now,” Erdman says. “They have boyfriends and girlfriends, and they won’t even let me touch them anymore.”

The sanctuary's operations rely solely on grants and donations. Erdman encourages people wanting to support the Cape Fear Parrot Sanctuary to schedule a tour. Visitors will undoubtedly be soothed by the area’s peace and beauty, much like the parrots that are finally able to enjoy the rest of their lives outdoors.

“You can see it in their faces,” he says. “It’s like their souls are finally at peace.” 

Tradition and innovation dine side-by-side at Beach Shop and Grill in Topsail Beach.

From a humble soda shop to an upscale bistro, Beach Shop and Grill shines a bit more brightly every year, and this, its 70th year in Topsail Beach, is no exception.

Since 1952, when the restaurant opened as Bill Warren’s Soda Shop, it has served up quality food for Topsail Beach residents and visitors.

Back then it was hot dogs, burgers and milk shakes. Today it could be an appetizer of N.C. Cheshire pork belly followed by sweet corn lobster ravioli along with favorite entrees such as shrimp and grits.

While the interior of the Beach Shop and Grill has been remodeled over time — including a recent patio renovation — the original knotty pine ceilings remain as a nod to the past.

Owners Jeff and Cheryl Price are celebrating 20 years of ownership of the beloved restaurant with new menus, including Sunday brunch, a patio renovation and the arrival of an award-winning chef.

Beach Shop and Grill moved to its current location at the corner of Davis Avenue and Anderson Boulevard five years after Hurricane Hazel hit the island in 1954. In 2002, the Prices bought it from Hap Alexander.

Beach Shop and Grill stories are legendary in Topsail Beach. Almost everybody has one. Ray McAllister’s book Topsail Island: Mayberry By the Sea carries some of this history. Many first, and lasting, loves began at Warren’s Soda Shop, where teenagers held jobs scooping ice cream.

Generations of families return year after year to the venerable restaurant.

The restaurant has survived hurricanes Hazel, Fran and, most recently, Florence. Many Topsail Island residents

remember the pictures and videos — the first views of flooding — the Prices posted to Facebook after Hurricane Florence. But no storm has taken away the stalwart restaurant nor ruined the beauty of the original knotty pine ceilings.

The ceiling and walls have been tweaked and decorated over time as the soda shop matured, Cheryl says.

“First, we upgraded the kitchen with essentials — a walk-in freezer and cooler. Then we moved on to refresh the dining room with a new bar made from 100-year-old tobacco barn wood, and custom tables and booths. We are always growing and reinvesting back into the business.”

Cheryl’s culinary school education and five-star hotel background help move the restaurant forward, keeping up with culinary trends and growth. She selects the restaurant wines, characterizing them as “highly allocated wines, mostly small boutique productions. Wines that pair well with fresh,

farm- or ocean-to-table–style items and are meant to be consumed with a delicious meal.”

The restaurant hosts annual wine dinners, a New Year’s Eve dinner and a Valentine’s Day dinner. “The dinners sell out within the initial 48 hours,” Cheryl says.

Jeff was in steakhouse management and a food broker and knew the previous owner of Beach Shop. He brought Cheryl out to visit the island, where he saw potential for good bourbon and great food. Now, 20 years later, their innovative ideas have guests lining up for hours awaiting a table in the summer season.

This anniversary brings a new chef and new seasonal offerings. Chef Jordan Keen, a Chicago transplant by way of Florida, is an award-winning chef just finishing a year’s residency as executive chef in Price Tower, Frank Lloyd Wright’s only fully recognized skyscraper.

“He is a great teacher and leader,” Cheryl says. “People

want to work harder and be more creative because he stokes the fires of creativity. He wants staff input. I enjoy working with him and getting to know him.”

Chef Keen uses Spanish, South African, Indian and Moroccan techniques and flavors in many of the new items on the menus. A couple of examples include whole fried local vermillion snapper with caramelized bok choy, Anson Mills forbidden black rice and nuoc cham, a staple of Vietnamese cooking, and the North Carolina Brasstown hanger steak with crispy beef fat potatoes, collards, fried garlic and foie gras demi.

As catering and special events have grown, the Prices purchased the house next door to the restaurant last fall. The home will be remodeled to offer housing to a bride and groom or others using the restaurant for a special event while the additional space has allowed the Prices to expand outdoor seating to almost 30.

D’Artanyn Alonge, who joined the staff this season, says Jeff and Cheryl make the environment the best he’s experienced in seven years of restaurant service.

“We try all the daily features so we can articulate them to the patrons,” he says. “All the sauces and mixes are house made, which takes some common dishes and makes them extraordinary.”

D’Artanyn also says Jeff and Cheryl are generous and appreciate feedback. “They each bring their own expertise to

The Patio has its own look and feel. The menu features local seafood such as crab cakes with pickled vegetables and gochujang aioli, carne asada with papas bravas, shishito peppers and a delicious smash burger made with Black Angus beef, American cheese and hand-cut bacon.

Sunday brunch is another new addition in this anniversary year with a menu that features brunch standards like fresh house-made biscuits and sausage gravy, chicken and waffles, braised apple French toast and kimchi grilled cheese.

Specialty cocktails have ramped up, too. Favorites like Mabel’s Punch, proceeds of which support bulldog rescue (the Prices have five) and the BlueberryLavender Mojito are joined by newbies Summer in Tulum, made with Sauza tequila, Cointreau, cucumber, sour and cilantro, and Up All Night, made with espresso, Stoli vanilla, Frangelico and Godiva liqueurs.

One secret to the Prices’ success, employees say, is that they treat their employees like family members.

Many employees stay six, seven or eight years, though Cheryl knows it’s good for people to move on, leave the nest or venture into a new career.

“We stay in touch with almost everyone,” Cheryl says. “Some of the best employees are the college kids here for the summer. We hosted the rehearsal dinner for a former employee’s wedding just last

It’s their attention to detail that makes Beach Shop distinct, he adds. “You can see Cheryl’s love of wines in our list of over 200 wines. She’s generous, teaching us about these fabulous wines at staff wine tastings.”

Part of the Prices’ hard work is staying on top of food trends. They research James Beard award-winning restaurants around the country, dining in them and exploring what they do to keep moving forward in the food-service industry. As Cheryl says: “You can’t do today’s job with yesterday’s methods and expect to be in business tomorrow.”

“We’ve been here 20 years, and we still love coming to work,” Cheryl says. “We enjoy the creative process of pairing food with wine or cocktails. Our guests don’t come here to eat; they come here to dine. We can’t imagine doing anything else.” 

The Little Mermaid of Topsail

sculpture on the dock in Banks Channel?

Here’s the story of how she got there and why her name is Golden Girl.

At 4 feet from head to tail, the Little Mermaid has made a big splash on the south end of Topsail Island. She has traveled around the community watched tourists search for gold and enjoyed a makeover that gives her a special glow for boaters and swimmers admiring her from the water.

Blazinski says the mermaid looked perfectly placed on the ocean. “It was ideal. She looked awesome,” she says.

When Mayrand sold his house and moved to Florida, the new homeowners took possession of the mermaid and left her on their porch for all to enjoy. The mermaid lived with Carol Holcomb and Jean McClendon in the house for the next 10 years. When Holcomb and McClendon moved down the street, they took the Little Mermaid with them and placed her in their garden. She stayed there until the summer of 2021.

The current Little Mermaid owner is Cecile Broadhurst, Mayrand’s sister.

When Holcomb and McClendon moved away, they asked if the Mayrands wanted her back, and they did. Now the mermaid sits happily on the dock owned

by Broadhurst and her husband, Ed. Broadhurst gave the mermaid a new name: Golden Girl. The Broadhursts live in an area of Topsail Beach known as Golden Pointe, and the mermaid, Broadhurst says, “shines in a golden tone in the morning and evening sun.”

But theirs is more to the story of why

The mermaid made her way to Topsail from Mexico about 15 years ago. She found her new home at A Country Garden, a garden shop in Wilmington owned

by Anne Blazinski. As Blazinski explains it, there was a man who traveled to and from Mexico and always came back “with an old trailer full of rusty metal items.” He would occasionally buy mermaids, and, Blazinski says, “Every time he had one, we’d buy it.”

Topsail’s Little Mermaid traveled from that garden shop to a home on Topsail Island when Phil Mayrand bought her from Blazinski and placed her on his front porch. Mayrand lived in the house that had been owned by his mother, a long-time resident of the island.

The gallery, based in Hampstead, promotes local artists and artisans. They recommended Cathy McInville, an artist who works with metal and is particularly adept with stained glass and iron.

Broadhurst was very excited about the quality of McInville’s work. “Cathy gave her a new birthday suit. She’s really attractive now,” she says.

McInville says the mermaid was in pretty bad shape due to sitting by the water. McInville did quite a bit of work on the sculpture, cleaning up the pits and then putting an undercoat on it. She then sprayed her in golds and greens to give the mermaid a bronze look. McInville called the treatment, which also involved a brush and grinder to clean her up, “subtle but effective.”

The Little Mermaid now has a dark copper finish, with a look of patina, thanks to McInville.

The continuing concern is how the refinishing job will do once she’s back near the water for a while.

The Mayrand family, longtime property owners and residents of Topsail Beach, also owned the property that featured the famous, or some would say infamous, Gold Hole. The legend from this particular spot grew out of a story about a lost treasure that had been buried on the island. In the mid-1750s, a ship carrying gold wrecked off the coast. In the 1930s, a group from New York came to the island to dig for the alleged lost gold.

By 1941 the group had dug a very large hole, now known as the Gold Hole, but they left mysteriously in the middle of the night, apparently empty handed. Broadhurst explains that during WWII it was discovered that “they were basically scamming investors.” Even though there is no gold, the legend continues.

She adds that the hole is owned by two people now. “We sold the lot next to us on the sound and it straddles the land,” she says.

The Golden Girl herself, the Broadhursts’ mermaid, was not as shiny or golden when they first took possession of her. Broadhurst says, “My husband and I kept looking at her, thinking she needs to be spruced up.” So, they inquired about having someone to do some work on her, going through the locally based art gallery ArtExposure.

Today, perched on the Broadhursts’ dock overlooking Banks Channel, the Golden Girl can only be seen from the sound. She shimmers in the sun, particularly in the early morning and late afternoon, marking the spot of the legendary Gold Hole in the aptly named Golden Pointe of Topsail Beach. With a seashell tucked under her for balance and stability, the mermaid is, as Broadhurst says, “a work of art, and a beautiful lady with a story to tell!” 

Troop 235 Goes World Local Scouts are raising funds for a trip to the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in 2023.

When the World Scout Jamboree opens next year in South Korea, 11 local scouts will represent North Carolina. All but two of those scouts are from Troop 235 in Hampstead.

“Nine scouts selected from the same troop is a testament to what the troop as a whole wants,” says Assistant Scoutmaster Allen Wilson. “When they get together, all the different personalities and interests really combine to create an atmosphere of ‘we want to do more, we want to see new things.’”

communities for its service and activities. They were the only troop invited to assist at the February reenactment at Moore’s Creek National Battlefield, and a recent camping trip involved 22 scouts. In early March, they held a flag retirement ceremony consecrating more than 500 flags gathered from the community by eagle scout Noah Witkowski and other troop members.

As a group they are exhilarated and frightened by international travel. A few of the scouts have passports and travel under their belts, but most will leave the United States for the first time.

“It’s kind of scary because it’s so far from home, but exciting — it’s South Korea,” says Derek Wood.

Michael Holloman wants to meet and talk with people with different viewpoints, and Tyler Wilson says he has wanted to go to South Korea “almost my entire life. I don’t know why. It’s just one of those places you’ve heard a lot about, and you want to go.”

Scoutmaster Mark Munroe and Assistant Scoutmaster Rob Power have been accepted by Cape Fear Council as members of the International Service Team (IST). By summer unit leaders will be identified, and additional parents may be chosen as a member of the IST. Meanwhile the troop and parents are busy with plans for next year’s trip.

“I’m thinking about how we’re going to get there once things are stable and we’re really going,” Michael Holloman says. “I want to play soccer/football with people of the world. My

motivation to get there is the community aspect of the Jamboree.

We’re all different but we’re all the same, all scouts.”

“I’m looking forward to meeting new

Coastline Captain Services will raffle off an ATV valued at $8,600 in June, and a few local restaurants will give a percentage of their sales on a single night to the troop. More fundraisers will come later in the fall. 

With a stream of steady clients, Butschle created City 2 Sea Media in 2020 and kept his full-time job at Salty Turtle Beer Company in Surf City. The multi-media company serves individuals and businesses of Topsail Island and surrounding areas.

“With our beautiful landscape and endless opportunities to capture cool pictures, I quickly realized that I could turn this hobby into something more,” he says.

The shutterbug gene runs in the family. Butschle remembers 64

his mother always carrying around a camera, following in the footsteps of his grandfather. He took photography in high school, developing photos in the dark room and learning the technical side of the industry, and the rest he taught himself.

“Today’s cameras are completely different, so I took to YouTube and the Internet to teach myself about new age photography and technology,” he says.

Butschle and his wife, Stefani, hail from Pittsburgh. Their trek south started when Butschle was stationed at Camp

Lejeune in 2011. When he got out of the Marine Corps in 2018, the couple decided staying in the area was better for his wife’s job, so they moved a short distance to Holly Ridge.

“We absolutely love where we live, and it makes the commute super easy to get to the island and surrounding areas,” he says.

After serving in the Marine Corps, Butschle became a police officer and dove into investigative photography before going to work for the Salty Turtle Beer Company, where one job has led to another.

“I have had the ability to work on projects solely off of conversations I’ve had with customers — and that’s what makes this area so cool to work in,” he says.

Since opening in 2020, City 2 Sea Media has continued growing and has recently added videography to its list of services.

“I find myself becoming more attracted to working with local businesses to help with content for their social media and websites,” he says. “This area is expanding so quickly with new businesses.”

With each client, Butschle hopes to instill a sense of trust.

They have blueberries for sale, brought in daily from their other farm.

A Shrimp Celebration Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival, a part of the Sneads Ferry community for 51 years and the official N.C. Shrimp Festival for 11 years, is coming up in October.

What began as a gathering of shrimp boat captains to honor a small fishing village in 1971 has grown into an annual event that is now recognized as the official shrimp festival of North Carolina. In May 2011, the N.C. General Assembly signed a bill into law that designated the Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival as the State Shrimp Festival, explaining that “Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival has grown into a great marketing and promotional tool for the Sneads Ferry community, Onslow County, and eastern North Carolina.”

The 51st Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival will be held October 21 and 22, 2022, on the grounds of the Community Center in the heart of the growing fishing village.

Jonathan Koziol, newly appointed Shrimp Festival chair, says that when the festival started, “it was just a bunch of the shrimp boat captains and fisheries that wanted to get together and have an event for the

community.” He estimates that attendance at the two-day festival last year was around 15,000.

There have been many changes to the event over the past 50 years, but one constant remains a significant part of the event.

Volunteers like Guthrie run the festival, and the committee starts planning for the next year’s activities as soon as the current year’s festival is complete. Koziol, who has been volunteering for eight years, says it’s “never ending.”

“Once we conclude the festival, we have a meeting once a month and we start planning for the next year,” he says.

It was originally held at one of the fish houses, whenever and wherever there was land available, but it soon became clear that the Shrimp Festival needed a permanent site. In 1976 the festival purchased 10 acres at the current site of the Sneads Ferry Community Center. The festival is part of the Sneads Ferry Community Council’s many offerings throughout the year.

“Now we have a place where the community can get together and have this festival every year,” Koziol says.

At one point the decision was made to put up pavilions for shade from the hot August sun. As the festival became more popular, the Shrimp Festival committee decided they needed a building to have a place where people could sit down and relax.

The building also provided a place to cook shrimp for the

Shrimperoo held each evening. Festival goers can enjoy a “plate of Southern goodness,” as Koziol describes it. The meal typically includes a plate of fresh fried or boiled shrimp with slaw, fries and hush puppies. The shrimp is always fresh and always local.

Additional activities around the event include the Shrimp Ball, held one week before the Shrimp Festival.

The ball is held primarily to recognize a voted shrimp boat captain of the year and serves to kick off the events.

At the festival itself, a beer tent and local winery are featured. There’s a touch tank that allows everyone to interact and ask questions of the local fish houses.

The proceeds from the festival also help fund a scholarship program put on by the Community Council.

planning committee moved the event to October. As Koziol explains, they spoke with the captains and the fish houses when considering the schedule change. They were told that the shrimp are “not really running in August.” That, coupled with the weather issues of the past August events, including one weekend during which it stormed constantly, convinced them to move the festival to the fall.

The captains concurred, saying that in October “they would be just finishing up bringing in shrimp from Pamlico Sound,” Koziol says. Another change was to reduce the festival to Friday and Saturday, from its previous three-day schedule. The festival was moved to the third weekend in October and will be held on the 21 and 22 in 2022.

Koziol first started volunteering with the Shrimp Festival when he was an instructor at the local training center for Marine combat engineers. He retired from the Marine Corps two years ago. He says that while he was there, the shrimp festival committee reached out to the Marine engineer school. When the volunteer opportunity came up, Koziol stepped forward and has been doing it WANT TO GO? ever since. He has also brought in other Marines Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival to help with the festival.

October 21 & 22, 2022 In 2019 Koziol was Sneads Ferry nominated and honored Community Center as the Volunteer of the 126 Park Lane, Sneads Ferry Year. sneadsferryshrimpfestival.org Beyond the volunteer planning committee, there are many individuals and groups from the community that participate in making sure the Shrimp Festival is a success each year.

There is a lot of involvement from churches, community service organizations, businesses and the fire department.

Koziol says the Turkey Creek Volunteer Fire Department is “very intertwined with the festival.” They help with traffic, provide medical services during the festival and participate in the parade.

The Shrimp Festival parade will be held Saturday morning, October 22. The parade features the 2nd Marine Division Band, the Dixon High School marching band, car clubs, a variety of floats and current and past Shrimp Festival Kings and Queens. A lot of local businesses will sponsor the cars that carry the kings and queens. A car show will also return to the festival in 2022.

f you have visited many of the Topsail area businesses, you have probably noticed that several of them have beautiful aerial drone photos hanging on their walls, and that they’re for sale.

The amazing images are of many of the scenic spots in Pender and Onslow counties. You may have noticed the creator of these canvases is Jeff Wenzel, who also happens to be the mayor of Holly Ridge. Let me tell you about Wenzel’s portrait studio, which can be found on U.S. 17S in Holly Ridge.

After the success of his drone photography, Wenzel began his portrait studio in 2018. His goal is to offer a large variety of portraits, not just beach family portraits. At JW Portrait Studio, he specializes in high school senior portraits, family portraits and sports photography. He also serves local businesses and artists by offering headshot photography inside the studio or on location.

When asked what makes his studio unique, Wenzel says, “We put art on walls. All divisions of my company specialize in displaying art to be seen, not just on digital devices. This is important as all pictures are now digital or on the web. Pictures are taken, then posted online and within a couple of days they are not seen for another year until they pop up as ‘memories’”.

Wenzel says he is passionate about helping families document and capture special times in their life.

“Whether it is a family vacation, a time of transition such as graduating high school or ensuring an annual family picture is taken to be able to look back and see how the kids have grown, we want to help,” he says. “We jokingly say we want the art we create to be the thing the kids fight over when mom and dad pass away!”

Wenzel’s team at JW Portrait Studio, all artists in some medium, make pictures that hang on walls.

“We are a full-service portrait studio, meaning we not only take great portraits, but we guide our clients through the process of getting the images printed and displayed to be enjoyed every day for years and years to come,” Wenzel explains. “Pictures are important. Life can get busy and many times moments pass that we wish had been documented.

Many people delay getting their portraits taken for various reasons that seem important at the time, but later they wish they would have had the photos taken.”

Wenzel’s studio has also found a way to utilize new technology.

“We are excited about a new service we offer where we are able to show what

a client’s portrait will look like on THEIR wall,” he says.

The client downloads an app on their mobile device and then takes pictures of walls they are thinking of hanging a portrait. At the viewing and ordering session, Wenzel and his staff can show the client virtually what a specific portrait will look like on their wall and scroll through sizes to ensure the perfect size is chosen for their space.

“We take great pictures and go the extra step to ensure they are printed and displayed to be enjoyed every day for years and years to come,” Wenzel says.

Chip divides his time between Hawaii and Wrightsville Beach, where he owns a charter boat business, and he and Marsha were engaged in Hawaii, hence the reason for their wedding’s Hawaiian theme. Held at the soundfront home of Ed and Cecile Broadhurst in Topsail Beach, the party venue featured a large garden full of spring flowers, definitely a photographer’s dream. The wedding featured 14 groomsmen dressed in Aloha shirts and khaki shorts and six bridesmaids wearing long coral dresses with flowers in their hair. The music was Hawaiian, and the guests enjoyed catering by Beach Shop and Grill.
