An architecture of whims that uniquely fit together; from structures that speak for themselves to art that keeps on blooming beyond the framed vistas and colour schemes where seemingly superfluous details transform into absolute milestones. Shapes and patterns blend to create balance. A space that encapsulates what can be achieved beyond the constraints of time. Where you have the freedom to simply be. A magnificent anthology of art, architecture and design.
A haven of refined luxuries
The curves and arcs of The Nautilus shell
Subtly reflecting the name, The Nautilus presents an interesting and fluid flow of spaces with interconnecting curves and circles. Following the golden spiral of the Nautilus shell, each interior space is designed to bring harmony and visual aesthetics. Without corners and edges, the curves and arcs bring an unorthodox approach to design articulating the space into a series of more intimate chambers; for relaxing, entertaining, resting, and indulgent bathing.
The use of grand doors or sliding partitions follows the design motif of spherical artisan space. Houses and residences with seamless flow and similar layouts are found in every setting of the island. Circular pitched roofs of residences and public pavilions provide opportunities for innovative and decorative treatment. Exposed roof timbers are arranged to create a variety of eye-catching radial designs, each unique to its particular building.
The art of bohemia
The exteriors of the residences and pavilions display neutral and natural colours. Inside the structures, flamboyant tones and accents reflect the resort’s bohemian theme. Each category of accommodation and public space presents its own key colourway, always accented by a range of contrasting but complimentary shades. Infusing comforts of home with eccentricity, houses, residences, the retreat and the mansion, each embrace a unique visual identity; in harmony with the colours and tones of the natural island.
COLOURS, ARTWORKS, DESIGNS AND PATTERNS
From the colours and accents of the spaces and the pieces of artwork affixed around the island, every aspect depicts bohemian whimsy. The evocative, reef-inspired abstract paintings, three-dimensional bohemian hand-craft hangings and delicate featheradorned wind-catchers - all act as a reminder of the beauty surrounding the space.
The exteriors of the residences and pavilions are kept deliberately neutral and natural in their colours, while the interior colour schemes feature flamboyant tones and accents. Each category of accommodation, and each of the public pavilions, has a unique visual identity with its own key colourway, accented by a range of contrasting but complimentary shades in harmony with the colour tones of their natural surroundings.
Natural and organic designs mix with geometric and mandala-inspired patterns –always emphasizing the colour theme of their particular location, and reinforcing the overriding bohemian vibe. While area rugs at selected public pavilions depict combine elaborate mandala patterns with intricate macramé techniques, the reef-inspired designs are featured on all carpet designs. Those at the over-water residences provide a visual connection in a more literal manner, with oval cut-outs over a viewing glass in the sitting room’s floors, framing views of the lagoon below.
Aa personal sanctum
From the curved walls of each pavilion and residence to the careful placement of fenestration, each element of the design is carefully put together to deliver secluded privacy. The punched openings in the curved walls provide controlled and focused vistas where the surroundings demand it, and broader, panoramic views from other spaces – where indoors and outdoors merge seamlessly bringing the ideal balance between views and seclusion.
FORMS ASSEMBLE IN THE LIGHT
Adding to the ambience of a private sanctuary, lighting plays a key role in creating the perfect space. Public pavilions feature ‘lantern’ windows at their tops, where the beauty of the ceilings is enhanced in the evenings by discreet architectural uplighting.
The soft and subtle lighting using indirect sources creates an inviting and peaceful space, where key architectural features, artworks and decorative artefacts are lit with stronger, focused lighting – for a dramatic contrast without overwhelming the mood.
Some of the floor lanterns glow softly to provide ambient lighting to their immediate surroundings, while others cast defined patterns of light and shadow onto the decks and pathways around them. The main swimming pool features a theatrical lighting installation within an elaborately inlaid mosaic of a nautilus. As the sun sets and night descends, the programmed, animated lighting brings the nautilus to life, as it appears to rise through the water.
Objet d'art at The Nautilus
Art is embraced at The Nautilus in a number of forms – from evocative, reef-inspired abstract paintings, to three-dimensional bohemian hand-craft hangings, to delicate feather-adorned wind-catchers.
Each piece of furniture and fixture is predominantly of natural, materials – woods, cane, rattan, bamboo – and is crafted with bespoke designs that convey an inviting comfort. The solid wood grains that are exposed by wire-brushing, expressed by liming, provide a tactile, high-touch experience that will mature over time.
Accent furniture pieces act as signatures in their respective pavilions, and emphasise the bohemian theme, from the tall, filigree peacock chairs of the Pool Bar, to the latticebacked loveseats of the spa’s arrival pavilion.
From the shadows cast from the chandeliers to the decorative light fittings, the display continues through macramé and beaded chandeliers, pendant lamps with colourful dip-dyed rope shades, and elaborately woven light sculptures in bamboo and rattan.
