England Spectacular Red Squirrel Photo Workshop

Tour Leader Kevin Morgans describes our photography workshop dedicated to celebrating the photogenic red squirrel. From our charming base in the Yorkshire Dales, this short break provides the perfect opportunity to photograph red squirrels in all their glory!

One of our most iconic mammals, with its twitching ear tufts, bushy tail and beautiful colouration, it's no wonder the red squirrel is among the most cherished of British species to watch and photograph. Once widespread across the country, for most, just catching a glimpse of a red squirrel is now a rare event that's only possible in a small number of locations outside of the Scottish Highlands.

Although there are several locations where red squirrels can be seen, photographing them remains challenging. The use of specialist hides, designed with photography in mind, creates unrivalled photographic potential and offers the best chance of capturing this charismatic species on camera.

For our specialist red squirrel photography workshop, we've teamed up with a local Yorkshire-based photographer and Kevin Morgans to offer the most outstanding red squirrel photography experience imaginable. Our base is a charming country hotel on the northern edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Known for its distinctive and atmospheric landscapes, the park's woodlands are a refuge for many nationally rare species, including an important population of red squirrel.

Over the course of our workshop, we have exclusive access to various hides, including a reflection pool hide, and woodland hides which feature a unique jumping platform - an unsurpassed photographic highlight! Here squirrels can be photographed frozen in time, in the midst of athletic mid-air leaps.

The reflection pool hide offers a fantastic opportunity to see and photograph the squirrels while they're feeding, drinking and even playing in the water. In still conditions, you can obtain perfect reflection images against a clean woodland floor backdrop.

The woodland hide has been purposely designed to enable comfortable photography, with windows offering views of perches on three sides. At the front of the hide, there are dual-height windows which allow for shots of squirrels on the trees, on the taller or lower perches or ground-level shots.

We've timed our workshop to provide soft morning light and the warm colours of early

autumn. This rich palette serves as a stunning backdrop when a squirrel pauses to eat a nut, or takes that first sip from the mirror-perfect reflection pool.

For the ultimate pictures, we can switch our focus to capturing the agility of the squirrels at the dedicated jumping platform. Red squirrels are capable of leaping distances of more than two metres - an impressive feat for an animal that's only 25 centimetres high, and a thrill to observe. Photographing this behaviour is even more special and rewarding. It takes patience and practice to capture this exciting moment, but with luck, the image will stay with you forever.

Red squirrels are wonderful animals to spend time with. At this quiet woodland site, there are usually several around at any given time, giving us near-constant activity.

Throughout our workshop, I'll be on hand to offer advice and help you to ensure that you get the most from your time in the field. We'll also have an opportunity to review images and work on processing when we're back at the hotel. No matter how much experience you have in photography, you're sure to come away feeling inspired by new photographic techniques and with a stunning collection of images to treasure.

Zambia South Luangwa Photo SafariThe Perfect Introduction

Wildlife photographer and tour leader Bret Charman has been running trips to Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park for over ten years. Here he reflects on what makes our South Luangwa Photo Safari the perfect introduction to this exceptional park.

Entering South Luangwa National Park is always exciting. You’re never too sure what might be in store for you. On our latest tour, we saw movement on the sandy expanse on the other side of the river as we crossed the seasonal pontoon. Small, dark shapes were darting around on the sand – African wild dogs. We had to drive an indirect path to get to the ‘beach’, primarily to ensure we didn’t get stuck in the soft, deep sand. With the skill of our local guide, Bwalya, we found a way around to enjoy an eye-level view of these fascinating predators. Moments like this make the Luangwa Valley the perfect place to introduce you to an African photo safari: memorable encounters of sought-after species and world-class photography opportunities.

Of course, there's so much more to a wildlife photography safari. A big part of the attraction is staying at a wonderful camp. We use Flatdogs Camp, a very comfortable property on the banks of the Luangwa River and right next to the park’s main entrance. Then there's the food – an à la carte menu offers you a plethora of delicious cuisines throughout the day. Finally, the lodge is in its own conservation area and there’s always plenty of wildlife around to enjoy, giving us the chance to hone our photographic skills even whilst we're enjoying the amenities.

The main highlight of any safari is the daily drives. We use open-top Land Cruisers so everyone in the vehicle can see and photograph our target species, whether the wildlife is on the ground or high in a tree. Our expert local guides work hand-in-hand with our photography experts, carefully positioning the vehicles to maximise the angles and photographic opportunities as they present themselves.

Without a doubt, it’s the wildlife that makes any photographic safari a success.

We’ve been organising safaris here for over 30 years and still marvel at what can be seen and photographed. It’s thought that South Luangwa National Park has the highest density of leopards in Africa. Our groups are continually rewarded with exceptional encounters and some truly spectacular photography of these graceful animals. Then there are the elephants. Beautiful, large herds of elephants with plenty of young move back and forth across the river each day. Lions abound in the park, often focusing their efforts on the powerful buffalo. The African wild dogs have been more reliable in recent years, providing plenty of fun and dynamism. There's so much more on offer than the iconic and familiar mammals that are synonymous with any successful photo safari. In fact, the birdlife here's staggering and species such as the southern carmine bee-eater are a photographer’s dream. We can’t forget other stunning birds such as the woodland kingfisher (on our November departures), Pel’s fishing owl and African fish eagle.

With all of these photogenic delights, likeminded people, incredibly skilled guides and one of our most popular camps, it's little wonder that our South Luangwa Photo Safari is the perfect introduction for those looking to capture the heart and soul of this addictive continent. Be warned, you may well be back for more! That's certainly been the case for many of our guests.

Cats out of Africa

A Guide to Big Cat Photography

Big cats reign as the true monarchs of the wild, boasting both majestic beauty and exceptional hunting prowess. Wildlife photographer Nick Garbutt shares his top destinations to search for big cats out of Africa, including the elusive snow leopard, the legendary tiger, and the prestigious jaguar.

Cats captivate our imagination and percolate our psyche like no other group of mammals. We can be watching a lion or tiger on TV, or better still in the wild, and instantly see all the tell-tale traits that make the fire-side tabby sitting on our lap, so endearing.

While seeing lion, leopard and cheetah in Africa has long been established, opportunities to see other cats, both big and small, in different parts of the world has in the past been limited. For so long these animals have remained hidden and out of reach, perhaps adding to their allure. But over the past 20 years, the shrouds of mystery have little by little been removed.

Few animals epitomise remote wilderness more than a snow leopard, with its near mythical status conjuring names such as ‘grey ghost’ or ‘ghost of the mountains’. The mountains of Ladakh in northern India support healthy populations that have in the past been in regular conflict with rural communities rearing sheep and yaks. But, with the help of education and successful conservation tools, attitudes are changing. The cats are now seen as an asset, a creature to be proud of and cherished.

Staying at a delightful ‘homestay’ lodge at the head of a beautiful remote valley offers the chance not only to experience the awe-inspiring grandeur of the Himalayas, but also to immerse one’s self in the snow leopard’s realm. You may wake to find fresh tracks from the previous night just a stone’s throw away, the notion that a cat has wandered by so close, setting every fibre of your being on edge. And later, perhaps the thrill of

Combining the contrasting landscapes of the Jawai Hills and Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, we hope to have opportunities to photograph two of India's big catsleopards and tigers.

seeing a snow leopard, slink across a frosty slope will create a memory to last forever.

Arguably the most majestic of cats, the tiger, may be the ultimate animal to see in the wild. Despite their place in the world remaining precarious, they’ve never been easier to see. Over the past decade populations in India (where most remaining tigers survive) have rebounded, with relatively healthy numbers now inhabiting many of the premier and less well-known tiger reserves. In addition, improvements in rules and regulations in many parks, has dramatically improved the ‘tiger watching’ experience. There has never been a better time to enjoy the spine-tingling thrill of early morning alarm calls echoing across a misty meadow, or the glimpse of a shimmering orange and black flank as a tiger walks along a forest edge.

Across the globe, in the heart of South America lies the Pantanal – a vast wetland that forms a bridge between the humid Amazonia forests further north and the colder, temperate regions to the south. This semi-aquatic wilderness is a refuge for the jaguar, the continent’s quintessential apex predator - a Rottweiler in cats clothing, thick-set, muscle-bound and oozing attitude. Exploring the rivers and backwaters that cut through mosaics of forest and grassland offers the chance to see and photograph jaguars intimately. The prime areas are extensive and the waterways a labyrinth, so it’s always possible to get away from others and find jaguars to photograph in solitude, and opportunities are regularly plentiful and varied.

"My highlight was experiencing Yellowstone in the winter and seeing how the wildlife coped in the snow. Others include watching a beautiful red fox hunting and seeing it pounce into the snow to catch its prey, seeing a wolf pack (through a scope) resting and getting to hear wolves howling. Nick is a brilliant leader, he has extensive knowledge of the areas we visited and not only about the wildlife but the geology of the area too. Great fun to be with and very helpful with camera tips and how to get the best from different scenarios. Full marks from me.”

Costa Rica

Festival of Wildlife 2027

Costa Rica, the setting of our 2027 Festival of Wildlife, is wildlife photographer and tour leader Emma Healey’s favourite place in the world to photograph, and here she enthusiastically explains why!

If you took me to the airport with my camera bag and told me I could go anywhere in the world, where would I go? Costa Rica, without a moment of doubt! The photography opportunities are endless, with spectacular biodiversity from arboreal mammals to fascinatingly beautiful insects and frogs all effortlessly inspiring your creative vision.

During the day, a kaleidoscope of colours and a symphony of animal noises ignite your senses – colourful tanagers, hummingbirds, scarlet macaws, cotingas and caciques fly past or land around you, interspersed with the possibility of monkeys gliding through the tree canopy or sloths slowly making their way through the branches. I’ve been eager to see a sloth in the open and on my latest trip I saw not just one, but two! I noticed a large sloth reaching for some tasty leaves, and as I watched in awe, her body moved and a tiny face appeared. Her baby was clinging on and they slowly observed us as I photographed them. What an experience!

As you walk through the forest, it’s not just the bigger species you’ll see. There’s a plethora of butterfly species with the chance of a blue morpho flashing its mesmerising blue wings before disappearing into the leaves, in addition to a huge variety of frog species. If you tap the leaf litter, some poison dart frogs may well catch you by surprise as they hop out of their shelter during the day. And when night falls, the larger species emerge, including red-eyed tree frogs and ghost glass frogs.

There’s something magical and mythical about the rainforest. Even a few steps in you feel like you’ve been transported to another world, with huge trees covered in vines towering above you and reaching for the sky. It may not be immediately visible, but these areas are teeming with wildlife if you stop to look and listen. If you hear a rustle of leaves, it could just as easily be a tapir, a coati, a bird or a frog. You never know what you’ll see next!

Anyone who has travelled with me before will know that I enjoy a sundowner in the evenings, but when faced with the choice of my favourite cocktail or the rainforest at night, I’ll pick the rainforest each and every time. Walking out of the lodge as the sun sets, the forest comes to life in an entirely different way than during the day. The sounds, sights and feelings change and there’s a palpable frisson of excitement in the air. You move slowly, water dripping around you, as you shine a torch around to detect any movement or antennae waving from a leaf or branch, and you gingerly lift leaves to see what may be hiding underneath. It’s a macro photographer’s paradise. Generally speaking, the wildlife here doesn’t shy away from being photographed, so there’s plenty of opportunity to get creative and experiment with some interesting lighting.

Costa Rica has long been a top travel destination, attracting both newcomers and seasoned travellers seeking to explore the incredible landscapes this small yet remarkable country has to offer. So far I’ve been twice and I’m counting down the days until I return in 2027! Will you be joining me on our Festival of Wildlife …?

NEW Festival of Wildlife Costa Rica

Costa Rica is a tropical paradise, whilst small it punches well above its weight when it comes to wildlife and biodiversity. Nowhere is this experienced more keenly than the Osa Peninsula in the country’s south-west, jutting out into the Pacific Ocean and the setting for our Festival of Wildlife in 2027.

Antarctica The Ultimate Snow Hill Expedition

IWildlife Photographer and Zoologist, Mark Carwardine, invites you to join him in November 2027 on an exclusive voyage to visit the emperor penguin colony of Snow Hill Island.

’ve lost track of how many times I have been to the Antarctic. I first visited the Frozen Continent in 1991 and have been at least once, often several times, pretty much every year since. But I have never been to the remote emperor penguin colony at Snow Hill Island. Needless to say, I am already counting the days until this wonderful trip – a privilege beyond words. It really does feel like the ultimate Antarctic adventure.

Our journey begins in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. From there, we’ll board the MV Ortelius – a ship I know and love. I’ve travelled on the Ortelius quite a few times before, and she ticks every box for polar exploration. She is a robust vessel - with an ice-strengthened hull - and is wonderfully comfortable inside, with a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Some vessels are all about comfort (and it is surprisingly difficult to get outside onto deck) while others are all about the expedition (but are not particularly comfortable). But the Ortelius manages to strike the perfect balance between comfort and seeing as much wildlife and as many wild places as possible.

The primary aim of this expedition, of course, is to visit the remote emperor penguin colony on a large area of sea ice off the south-western extremity of Snow Hill Island, in the Weddell Sea off the seldomvisited eastern side of the Antarctic Peninsula. Helicopter is the only way to access the rookery and then we’ll walk across the frozen wilderness to mingle with the penguins. I say that rather matter-of-factly – but just imagine standing on the Antarctic sea ice, surrounded by thousands of the largest and most alluring penguins in the world. We hope to see and photograph the fluffy grey chicks (they’ll be at their fluffiest when we are there) huddled close to their parents for warmth, as well as the stunningly beautiful adults (roughly the height of six-year-old children) marching or sliding on their bellies across the ice. You may have seen penguins before – but not like this. It will be a truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

But the emperor penguins are just part of this special adventure. The Weddell Sea is teeming with other wildlife too — Adélie, gentoo and chinstrap penguins are all likely, as well as crabeater, Weddell and leopard seals. There’s also a chance of spotting humpback, Antarctic minke and killer whales – not to mention a wonderful array of seabirds that will likely keep us company throughout the trip.

Our team will be made up of naturalists, photographers and expert guides, as well as a hand-picked expedition team. When we’re not outside watching wildlife and photographing the ultramarine ice floes, we’ll have onboard lectures and workshops, and there will be plenty of help and guidance on photography, too.

This quest to Snow Hill Island feels like the culmination of a lifetime spent exploring the natural world. It doesn’t get much better. Will you join us?

The Wonders of Kumana National Park Sri Lanka

TWildlife Photographer Sean Weekly visited Sri Lanka earlier this year, and introduces us to Kumana National Park where he’s delighted to be leading a new trip to photograph its breathtaking wildlife.

his was my first time setting foot in Sri Lanka and I knew which of its animals I most wanted to see and photograph … the leopard. Not only an unquestionably beautiful cat, it’s also one of great power, tenacity, adaptability and agility, and has an astonishing capacity to remain hidden. This is perhaps part of the reason why leopards are such a sought-after species and a dream animal to photograph when they do reveal themselves.

Sri Lanka is leopard island. In the absence of larger predators, this distinct and large subspecies has taken on the role of apex predator and despite its secretive habits, this is one of the very best places in the world to see them.

On my trip to Sri Lanka last year I visited two national parks, Wilpattu in the north-west and seldom-visited Kumana National Park in a quiet corner of the southeast. Both exhibit an abundance of wildlife, and over a handful of days in each park, I saw a remarkable 16 different leopards, highlighting the incredible potential of this destination.

While we feature Wilpattu National Park on some of our other tours to Sri Lanka, Kumana National Park is a little-known, hidden jewel among Sri Lanka’s parks and the setting for our new Leopard and Sloth Photo Safari.

Upon arriving at Kumana on our first morning drive, we were greeted by flatlands teaming with life; herds of buffalo lazed about enjoying the cooling mud, wild boar gathered for a refreshing drink and a family of stripednecked mongoose ambled by. Amongst a variety of colourful birds, spotted deer grazed peacefully, their

tails flicking to keep flies at bay. It was quite a scene.

Then it wasn’t long before we saw our first glimpse of that distinctive rosette pattern of a female leopard. While we’d see leopards on almost every game drive in Kumana, true to their secretive nature, not all sightings would present photographic opportunities. However on a dedicated photo tour, this mostly tourist-free park lends itself perfectly to producing some thrilling and rewarding leopard sightings. This is what we went on to enjoy over several game drives as we delighted in photographing numerous leopards, with highlights including young cubs passing right in front of our jeep and a large male draped over a tamarind tree grooming himself in beautiful light.

Kumana is also a great location for another even more elusive mammal, the shaggy coated, termite-eating sloth bear that we also aim to see and photograph on this trip. As a destination, Kumana is the perfect base for a photography tour, with open landscapes, dappled forests and numerous waterholes. In addition to a high density of leopards and sloth bears, it also supports a large number of Asian elephant, and everything from endemic toque macaque to spot-billed pelican.

From our base at a relaxing beachside hotel, we can unwind in between safaris and even photograph the ghost crabs running along the beach. Kumana is a captivating destination characterised by a blend of mixed forests, grasslands and tranquil waterways. Join me in capturing its charismatic wildlife on camera, the perfect way to enjoy and marvel at the complexity of Sri Lanka’s natural wonders.

Little visited Kumana National Park in south-east Sri Lanka is one of the best locations in the world to see leopard and sloth bear. Join us on this dedicated photo safari exploring one of Sri Lanka’s undiscovered wildlife hotspots.
