Flora & Fauna of Zululand & the Drakensberg
Wildlife of Kruger & KwaZulu-Natal
Tuesday 14 - Tuesday 28 March 2017 Tuesday 13 - Tuesday 27 March 2018 The dramatic Drakensberg Mountains are a wildlife treasure chest with over 2,000 species of flowering plant, 290 bird species and 48 mammal species recorded to date. We enjoy leisurely walking, birding and botanising on the many trails of the Drakensberg before heading to the Bonamanzi Private Game Reserve adjacent to Lake St Lucia and the magnificent Hluhluwe River. Here we can relax on a birdwatching boat trip on the river, as well as birdwatching and botanical walks in the sandforest and areas of tall woodland around the main camp. Our final visit is to the montane grasslands of the Highveld that surround the fabulous wetlands of Wakkerstroom. OUTLINE ITINERARY
Sunday 23 October - Sunday 6 November 2016 Sunday 22 October - Sunday 5 November 2017 From the big game of Kruger National Park and stunning grassland scenery of Mpumulanga, to the lowland savannah and coastal wetlands of KwaZulu-Natal, we visit a land rich in wildlife. We start with some birdwatching in Dullstroom before continuing to South Africa's foremost protected area, Kruger National Park – renowned for its range of large mammals and predators. From here we head back up into the Mpumalanga highveld, where the open grasslands are home to blue and crowned cranes and delightful meerkats. We then continue south-east to KwaZulu-Natal, whose lowland savannahs and coastal wetlands offer probably the best birdwatching South Africa. The trip ends on the coast at St Lucia, where we explore the wetland and adjacent dune-forest, and the possibility of seeing humpback whales. OUTLINE ITINERARY
