with the Tekchandani family
The Azores archipelago is synonymous with adventure, with lagoons, lakes, beaches and volcanoes to explore. The Tekchandani family recently celebrated a milestone birthday on our Azores Family Adventure and share their memories from this special holiday.

Turning 50 felt less like a milestone and more like a springboard. For years, I’d dreamt of an adventure that would not only mark the occasion but also captivate my teenage sons, aged 14 and 16. The usual ‘another holiday with mum and dad’ eye rolls were a given, so this trip had to be epic. The Azores, with their stunning volcanic landscapes, lush greenery and adrenaline-pumping activities, seemed like the perfect antidote. So, armed with a drone, we set off.
The boys’ initial scepticism was palpable. The thought of spending a week with their parents wasn’t their idea of fun. But from the moment we met our warm, knowledgeable guide and driver, the mood shifted. Their enthusiasm for the Azores was infectious, and their personal touch made us feel looked after and special.
Our first adventure was kayaking on Sete Cidades Lake, a serene, glassy expanse within a dormant volcano. The iconic blue and green lakes, separated by a narrow bridge, were even more stunning in person. As we paddled, the drone soared high above, capturing cinematic footage that would forever remind us of our peaceful yet powerful introduction to the islands. The next few days were a whirlwind of exhilaration and discovery. Out in the Atlantic, we were blown away by the marine life – we’d never seen so many dolphins in one go. Later, we hiked through verdant trails to a beautiful waterfall, where the cascading water provided a refreshing reward.
But the true test of our adventurous spirit came with an exhilarating canyoning tour. Abseiling, sliding, and leaping into rivers was uncharted territory for us all. There was a moment of trepidation, but under expert guidance, we embraced the challenge. The sheer thrill, rush of cold water and triumphant cheers at the bottom were incredibly bonding experiences. My boys, who had once grumbled about leaving their gaming consoles, were now hooting with joy, pushing limits and discovering new courage.
Every day was packed with activity and learning. We revelled in the unique experience of having lunch cooked by volcanic vapours, bathed in geothermal pools, visited botanical gardens and relaxed on lovely beaches.
As my 50th birthday drew to a close, surrounded by Azorean scenery and the happy, exhausted faces of my sons, we knew we’d chosen well. The trip had been everything I’d hoped for and more. In the boys’ own words, they would do it all over again. And as a parent, there’s no better gift than seeing your children engaged, happy and already dreaming of the next family adventure.

Holidays for All Generations

Many of our holidays are ideal for family groups, allowing you to create special memories with your loved ones. Last summer, three generations of the Powell family set off on our Namibia Wildlife Adventure and made memories that will last them all a lifetime. Here, they relive the magic!

Namibia with the Powell family
We were looking for a special holiday to celebrate a golden wedding anniversary, and decided to give Families Worldwide a call. My teens had thoroughly enjoyed their Active Croatia holiday and we had found Nick and the team incredibly helpful. But we knew that finding the perfect holiday to suit three generations, ranging in age from 11-77 years, would be a tough ask!
We hadn’t considered a family holiday to Namibia, so when Nick suggested it as the perfect destination for grandparents, parents and children, we were initially unsure. But as he shared his ideas and enthusiasm, the variety swept us along. We decided to go for it … and it turned out to be everything we could have hoped for, and more!
We flew to Windhoek, where we met Heidi, our guide and driver for our trip. She got us settled into our 11-seater, and we set off. Within a few minutes, she was announcing "baboons to the left", "warthogs to the right", and we knew we had arrived!
After a night in Windhoek, we set off for the Otijwa Private Reserve. We’d bizarrely become accustomed to baboons and warthogs, but watching our first giraffe family was an unexpected delight. Otijwa is beautiful, and the evening drive treated us to our first sightings of white rhino and stunning African sunsets. The early morning rhino safari was genuinely thrilling, and we were sad when it was time to go. Although, when we arrived at the Cheetah Conservation Fund, we quickly realised every day of this holiday was going to be a highlight.
Following a comfortable overnight stay, our travels continued to Etosha National Park. Nothing prepared us for the view at the first watering hole – elephants, zebra, springbok and wildebeest in every direction. Simply stunning! The accommodation was beautiful, and the staff were welcoming and great fun. We were even visited by elephant and giraffe by the pool! We were treated to sightings of leopards, lions and hyenas, as well as beautiful birds and the stunning landscape of the Etosha Salt Pan. There were so many ‘pinch me’ moments, we lost count. Our final drive
took us to the Etosha Safari Camp, which was a favourite for our teens, with live music and a laid-back feel.
After Etosha we were expecting an anticlimax, but as we headed into Damaraland we remembered that every day in Namibia just presents a different sort of stunning. We all loved learning about the culture of the Damara people and viewing the ancient cave engravings. The granite mountains were like something out of a film set and the sundowners were another highlight.
We drove to the seaside town of Swakopmund and it was hard to believe we were in the same country. The grandparents sat out of the dune boarding (which the adrenaline-seeking younger members loved!) but we all enjoyed kayaking with Cape seals at Walvis Bay and a boat trip to spot dolphins and humpback whales. We chose to extend our trip to the Gogabeb Desert Research Centre where we were warmly welcomed. Our final sundown drive into the ancient dunes was breathtaking. It was hard to take in that this journey of a lifetime was coming to an end.
Everyone fell in love with Namibia and the Namibia Wildlife Adventure offered something for all of us each day. Namibia is a very age inclusive destination – we all made memories to last a lifetime. I think we all shed a tear leaving Heidi at the airport. But we promised we’ll be back.

Tanzania

with the Siddon family
Tanzania offers a wonderful introduction to Africa, making it an ideal choice for a family safari holiday. The Siddon family embraced this opportunity, taking their children to Tanzania for their first-ever safari experience. Here’s how their journey unfolded!

Q What made you choose Tanzania?
A I was celebrating a big birthday last year and wanted to have a truly memorable family holiday to honour it. I’d been on safari before and absolutely loved it, but my husband and children had never experienced it. We chose Tanzania because it’s known for being a family-friendly safari destination.
I wanted to balance the safari experience with some rest and relaxation, so we tailored the itinerary to include some time in Zanzibar too. Overall, the holiday exceeded our expectations with plenty of wildlife, stunning scenery, new experiences and amazing family memories.
Q What were your safari experiences like?
A We did three different types of safari, each offering a different experience. The boat safari was on a small motorboat along the river and we saw a variety of different wildlife: hippopotamus, a fish eagle, yellow-billed storks, monitor lizards and crocodiles.
On the walking safari, we left at sunrise to avoid the heat of the day. While on our expedition, we saw some beautiful birds, a few small deer and lots of different trees and plants, including the mangroves. Seeing the beautiful colour of the sunrise was incredible.
Overall, the vehicle safari was our favourite because we saw the best variety of animals, including elephants, giraffes, vervet monkeys, baboons, waterbuck, buffaloes, warthogs and impala. Our guides knew all about the wildlife and plant life and taught us a lot about the wonders of Tanzania.
Q Did you enjoy your Zanzibar extension?
A Zanzibar was a great place to visit; it was beautiful with white sandy beaches and a turquoise sea. We spent most of our time

relaxing with walks along the beach, splashing in the pool and snorkelling in the sea. The highlight for the children was visiting a sea turtle sanctuary where we fed the turtles and cleaned their shells. Our accommodation had a beautiful sea outlook and an amazing view of the sunset. On the last day, we enjoyed a boat ride across the sea from Stone Town to Prison Island, where there’s a population of giant tortoises including one that was 198 years old!

Costa Rica

with the Crawford family
With incredible wildlife encounters, volcanoes, rainforests, beaches and adrenaline-fuelled adventures, it’s no wonder Costa Rica is our most popular long-haul destination! The Crawford family share their holiday highlights and give an insight into what to expect.

Q Did you see any wildlife on your holiday?
A We saw so much wildlife, it was incredible! We saw sloths, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, white-faced capuchin monkeys, colourful frogs, iguanas, snakes (at a safe distance!), coati, agouti, toucans, cayman and a crocodile – to list just a few! Many of these were in the grounds of our hotels, so we didn’t even have to travel to see them. The opportunities for wildlife spotting were one of the main reasons we chose Costa Rica as a destination, and we certainly weren’t disappointed.
Q What were your children’s holiday highlights?
A My youngest son, aged 10, says the ziplines in Monteverde were his favourite. He’s scared of heights and was very nervous, but the staff were super patient and supportive and helped him find the courage to give it a go. Once he got started, he absolutely loved it. My eldest son, aged 15, had two main highlights: turtle nesting and Venado Caves. Watching a giant green sea turtle lay her eggs under a blanket of stars while fireflies danced nearby was magical, while exploring Venado Caves appealed to his more adventurous side.
Q What other activities did you do?
A We did a huge range of activities. In Monteverde, we did night and morning hikes through the rainforest, went on the ziplines and walked across the hanging bridges. In La Fortuna, we visited the amazing Venado Caves and relaxed at the hot springs. We then went to Tortuguero, where we took an early morning boat ride, kayaked and had the most incredible wildlife spotting experience when we visited the nesting green sea turtles. Our final stop was Puerto Viejo, where we enjoyed the beaches along the Caribbean Coast, visited the Jaguar Rescue Centre and took a snorkelling trip.
Q What was the food like?
A We all really enjoyed the food in Costa Rica. There’s a good mix of food available, so it’s never difficult to find something for everyone to eat. My children really enjoyed the buffet breakfasts that we had at most of the hotels, which were a great way to start the day. The fresh fruit, especially the melon and pineapple, were particular favourites. For our other meals, we did a mixture of eating in the hotels and out at local restaurants. It’s easy to find local cuisine or more familiar favourites, depending on your preference.
Q Would you recommend Costa Rica to your friends?
A Absolutely! I recommend Costa Rica as a destination every chance I get. Costa Rica has something for everyone. The wildlife is incredible and the countryside is beautiful, with amazing views and sights everywhere. There are plenty of activities for those who like a helping of adrenaline with their holidays, both water and land-based, as well as opportunities to relax on a gentle boat ride, at the thermal springs, by a pool or on the beach. It’s great for families as everyone is so friendly and welcoming. The biggest challenge is narrowing down the list of possible things to do!

The Crawford family, Costa Rica Family Adventure
We absolutely loved the entire holiday. The itinerary was well-planned with lots of excellent activities and sights, and the kayaking, rafting and ziplining were enjoyed by us all. The tubing experience was also memorable and was especially nice on our last day. We would definitely recommend Costa Rica.

This trip exceeded all our expectations. My children said it was the best holiday they’ve ever been on (and they’ve been on a lot)! We enjoyed having a schedule that allowed us time to relax as a family, but included the right amount of excursions to help us feel like we actually saw Mexico. The highlight for all of us was the trip to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve. Both kids aged 11 and 14 said this was their favourite. I couldn’t have asked for more help and support from Families Worldwide. We chose to tailor our own trip and they were very accommodating throughout the whole process.

Sri Lanka
with the Bord family

Despite its small size, Sri Lanka is an incredibly diverse island offering wildlife encounters, tantalising food, cultural discovery and wonderfully welcoming people. Here’s why the Bord family fell in love with this tropical gem on their 3-week Sri Lankan Adventure.

Q Why did you choose a tailor-made family holiday in Sri Lanka?
A We were looking for a ‘once-in-a-lifetime family adventure’, and had some good ideas of what we’d like to achieve. We had researched many locations, and Sri Lanka ticked every box! The country’s diversity and beauty seemed to offer everything we could wish for.
We decided to go on a 3-week private tailor-made trip and it was absolutely perfect. We made a family wish list of what we wanted to see and do, where we wanted to visit and what we hoped to experience. With the guidance of Families Worldwide, we created an itinerary that met our desires and preferences. It was an opportunity for us to break out of our comfort zone and try something completely brand new, unique and unforgettable. The tailor-made experience made everything possible and more.
This holiday went above and beyond. Families Worldwide took our wish list and delivered 100% with added technicolour and stereo. It was utter magic. We would visit again at the drop of a hat.
Q What were your most memorable moments?
A There are too many to mention! Once-in-a-lifetime experiences kept happening back-to-back throughout the whole adventure, and the children absolutely loved it all from start to end. We loved the colours, the flavours, the vibrancy and the incredible warmth, enthusiasm and friendliness of the people across the island who

were so keen to share the island’s beauty with us. There were loads of activities across the whole island to keep the children completely fascinated and stimulated. They swam, snorkelled with turtles, surfed with locals, ziplined, explored ancient rainforests and laughed through a glorious holiday full of colour, friendliness, comfort and adventure.
But for us specifically, it was the wildlife that was most memorable. It was incredible seeing the children’s faces as we went on a safari past elephants, leopards, incredible birds and beautiful insects. We even saw a 10-minute-old baby elephant being nursed by all the aunties!
Q Do you have any tips for other families planning a trip to Sri Lanka?
A Just be brave, bold and embrace it! The whole island is stunning, varied and has so much to offer. Staying in a tree house amongst the animals can be quite something – branch out and see what you can discover!
It’s worth learning a little of the language in Sinhalese and Tamil and taking lots of change for tips too, basic politeness returns such joy! But if in doubt, ask your local guide or a Tuk Tuk driver. They know everything and will take you anywhere (showing you local secrets and treasures along the way).
Dive right in and have an absolute blast!
The Bord family, Tailor-made Sri Lankan Adventure
As a group of six with children aged from 12-18, Sri Lanka had something for everyone and was very easy. We didn’t need to worry about anything and it took all our stress away! The elephant safari was a definite highlight, and everyone enjoyed the rafting, snorkelling and trip to the village too. There wasn’t an activity that wasn’t enjoyed. The Priest Family in South-east Asia
Having travelled to Asia three times with Families Worldwide over the past two years, we asked the Priest family to share their perspective on what makes this region so special. Here they reflect on their favourite moments in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, and reveal what keeps them coming back for more!

Q What did you most enjoy about your Vietnam Family Adventure?
A We loved the food, the culture and the people were incredible. It was so lovely to see the children exploring during the homestay in Mai Chau – they were so relaxed and excited. The accommodation was so clean and the swimming pool was an added bonus too!
Q Did you have any favourite activities?
A The boat trip on Halong Bay was amazing, and we thoroughly enjoyed kayaking and swimming on the beach. The overnight sleeper train and exploring the caves were highlights too.
Q You mentioned loving the culture and people –can you share why?
A Everyone was so helpful and kind. We felt safe and cared for, and nothing was too much trouble. It was amazing knowing that our guide was able to tailor our experience for us – they even arranged an electric bus when I wasn’t feeling up to the final bicycle ride around the vegetable field in Hoi An!
Q What was the highlight of your Cambodia and Thailand holiday?
A It’s difficult to name one event or place that stands out above the others! We visited so many places and have so many beautiful memories and photos. Every experience was enriching for us.
In Cambodia, Phnom Sampov and Battambang were beautiful. We loved riding the bamboo railway, going on a street food tour in Siem Reap and seeing Angkor Wat.
Thailand was also fantastic. Kanchanaburi was just out of this world and we enjoyed the waterfalls, rafting down the River Kwai, the historical tour, the food experiences and the temples. Ayutthaya was fascinating, and Wat Phalad and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai were so majestic.

Q Did your teenage niece enjoy the holiday too?
A Yes! She loved the bamboo railway, the waterfalls and the cooking experience at Grandma’s Thai Cooking School! She learnt a lot about the culture and history – particularly around World War II and the Death Railway.
I would recommend Families Worldwide to anyone who will listen. They’re the best tour company by far!
Q Would you recommend booking with Families Worldwide?
A Absolutely! I’m so grateful for their support and guidance, and their whole booking process is so easy and trouble-free.
Even when we missed our connecting flight home to the UK, they were so calming and reassuring, and saved us from feeling lost in Bangkok airport. They found us accommodation and a flight home the next day! There was no stress and no hassle.

Indonesian Island Family Adventure
Borneo

with the Walker family
From rainforests to coasts, Borneo’s varied landscapes are made for exploration. The Walker family recently travelled to this tropical island on their fifth holiday with us, and shared what made it so memorable.

We’re very lucky to have travelled with Families Worldwide on four previous occasions, all of which have been unique and incredible family adventures. So, after considering Borneo for a while and with our expectations high, we decided to choose this incredible island as the destination for our fifth adventure with Families Worldwide.
From start to finish, the entire experience was a perfect blend of wildlife, culture, adventure and, of course, family bonding. From the moment we landed, we felt fully taken care of and supported. The local guides were exceptional – they were passionate about their country and had extensive knowledge of the wildlife and culture. We felt very secure and relaxed knowing that they were there with us, making sure we got the very best out of our holiday.
The Active Borneo itinerary was perfectly balanced for what we wanted. There was lots of action for our teenage boys, coupled with cultural experiences and time to relax. Our main highlights included multiple private boat safaris along the Kinabatangan River, where, thanks to the experience of our guides, we spotted a plethora of incredible wildlife, including the Borneo Big Five – orangutan, pygmy elephant, proboscis monkey, rhinoceros hornbill and estuarine crocodile. The time on the boat was out of

this world, and we still think about how fortunate we are to have experienced it.
Other highlights included a wonderful bike ride through enchanting villages, a trek through the jungle, white-water rafting in stunning landscapes, and snorkelling safely and sustainably amongst some wonderful sea creatures. Visiting the city of Kota Kinabalu in the second part of the holiday gave us a fantastic contrast to Borneo and its highlights, offering us a blend of city life and more cultural experiences, as well as serving as a gateway to exploring other parts of the country.
Throughout, our accommodation was comfortable, clean and family-friendly, often nestled in stunning natural settings. Falling asleep to the sounds of the rainforest and waking up ready for another breathtaking experience was pure magic. We really enjoyed preparing, cooking and eating delicious Malaysian food, and afterwards we joined in with some cultural dancing with the friendly locals.
We returned home feeling enriched, inspired and deeply connected – not only to the incredible place we visited, but to each other as a family. We’re very grateful for this unforgettable journey and are already planning adventure number six!
The Walker family, Active Borneo
Sepilok Forest Reserve was the perfect place to start and it was great to see orangutans on our first full day. The rainforest night walk experience also helped us see lots of animals from the beginning.

This holiday was one of the best I’ve ever been on! My favourite part was Zanzibar because the accommodations were amazing, the restaurants had some of the best food I have ever tasted, and I even got to clean a sea turtle’s shell and feed them when they were under the water.
Owen, aged 10, Saadani Safari & Zanzibar Family Adventure – Jul 2024

We all had a really super and memorable holiday. The whole trip was incredibly well organised and we loved the variety of scenery, snowshoe routes and activities. The snowshoeing and beautiful mountain scenery were definite highlights!
The Smith family, Austria Family Snowshoeing Holiday – Feb 2025

The itinerary encouraged everyone in the family to participate in new experiences. We enjoyed it so much and liked everywhere that we visited. Our highlights were the walking and cycling tour of Hanoi, cycling through the rice fields, kayaking at Halong Bay and the boat trip in Hoi An.
The Wilkins family, Vietnam Family Adventure – Jul 2024

We enjoyed every part of our holiday. The itinerary was well planned with a great mix of adventure and exploring, as well as time to relax. Our highlight was trekking in the mountains, but the tour of Marrakech was also excellent with a great local guide.
The Edington family, Morocco: Atlas Mule Train – Apr 2025

The wildlife was awesome. On one boat trip the monkeys jumped onto the boat and it was incredible! I got on so well with the guides too.
Theo, aged 14, Active Borneo – Oct 2024

Families Worldwide put the effort in to find us the holiday we wanted, and they nailed it! It was the holiday of a lifetime. The wilderness park setting was peaceful, magical and every day brought a new amazing experience. Cross-country skiing was awesome, and the husky sledging was epic.
