Centenarian inducted into the Mallorytown Legion Branch 484: Betty Slade, centre, longtime Brockville resident and an English war bride, who turned 100 in August, was sworn in as an associate member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 484 (Mallorytown) on Sunday, October 27, 2019. Betty’s husband, Bill, who passed away in the 1980s, was a member of Branch 484. The ceremony took place in her home and was performed by Branch 484 President, John Maxwell, left, and witnessed by Branch 484 members Jan Stephenson (Membership Chair), right, and Bob Stephenson (Sergeant-at-Arms), back. Betty said that it was a great honour and hoped that Queenie would be pleased. “That is what we called her in our family,” said Betty, referring to HRH Elizabeth the Second. (Photo: Catherine Orth)

Flo Fraser, Food Bank volunteer and Air Force veteran Story and photo by Sally Smid

Flo Fraser stands beside her Air Force needlepoint creation. She served her country and also her local community as an Athens Food Bank volunteer and much more for many years.

Flo Fraser is one of the few women who are area veterans. She served with the Air Force in France along with her husband Alex for five years. Her father-in-law, Piper Major Donald Gordon is one of Athens’ fallen WWII veterans. It is not surprising that Flo has also served in her community for many years as well. She was one of the original members of the Athens Food Bank com-

mittee and has recently decided to retire. “Things have come a long way,” she remarks. “Much good has been done. Today there is much more careful screening of Food Bank applicants. Athens Food Bank continues to make a big difference in helping many individuals and families!” The Food Bank recently completed another very successful food drive. Flo noted that organizers are always very appreciative of donations that are made to this worthy cause.
