MEDIA RELEASE United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Highlights of the regular United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Council Meeting held on Thursday, February 24, as well as the Committee of the Whole and Joint Services Committee (JSC) meetings held earlier in February: County Road 43 widening Engineering Company announced: McIntosh Perry Consulting Engineers Ltd. will be the firm overseeing the County Road 43 widening project. The project will impact some zoned agricultural property along the north side of County Road 43 at the Ferguson Forest. There will also be a number of trees removed along the right-of-way and around the existing bridge. However, a new wetland habitat beneath the new bridge with the addition of trees, shrubs and other plantings along the County Road 43 construction corridor will be created. MEDIA RELEASE Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit Land Control Program will transition to municipalities Oct 1st Since 1998, the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit has been providing services under PART VIII of the Ontario Building Code for 19 of 22 municipalities in Lanark, Leeds and Grenville. These services include: review and approval of applications for septic system permits, installation inspections, file searches, sewage system maintenance inspections, review of subdivision plans and severances.

This program is self-funded by fees.

On February 24, 2022, the

Board of Health of the Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit announced that, as of October 1, 2022, the Health Unit will no longer be able to provide these services on behalf of 19 municipalities in Leeds, Grenville and Lanark. Health Unit staff will continue working with municipalities to support the transition.

“The Board’s decision will enable the Health Unit to focus on its primary public health mandate, guided by the Ontario Public Health Standards, to promote and protect the health of Leeds, Grenville and Lanark residents, and move towards the recovery phase of the COVID-19 Pandemic,”

Truth and Reconciliation Acknowledgement from Council: Counties Council has accepted a recommendation from the Committee of the Whole for the development of an Indigenous Reconciliation Acknowledgement for the United Counties. The Warden will make this acknowledgment at the beginning of all Council meetings. Additional steps will be taken in the development of an Indigenous Reconciliation. Staff will investigate partners to develop specific training to ensure The Counties’ services meet the needs of its indigenous residents, as well as partner agencies supporting indigenous needs. Staff will also seek out funding opportunities to, develop further meaningful acknowledgement within the Counties, to the ongoing Truth and Reconciliation process being advanced within Canada. Students raise funds for homeless Heritage Community Christian School’s Grades 7 & 8 students donated $300 to help the homeless! It was a month’s funds that they had raised through their hot lunch program at the school. They decided to get gift cards for the homeless in Brockville so they could purchase warm meals.

The students offer hot lunches every second and fourth Friday of the month and the funds raised go towards their class trip at the end of the year. This is just one way that students strive to make a difference in their community.

Re: Maple View Lodge Expansion Update, January 26, 2022 For some the announcement of the expansion of nursing home facilities is a step forward, as local MPP Seven Clark remarks in his announcement about the redevelopment of Maple View Lodge. For others, it is a sign that governments, of all stripes, continue to ignore the wishes of the majority of seniors. Older Ontarians are saying they would like to see more alternative home support programs funded so they can age in their own home and in their community. A recent poll from the National Institute on Age confirmed that 96% of seniors over 65 say they will do whatever they can to avoid long term care.

There is a tremendous imbalance in public investments between long term care facilities and community-based alternatives such as assisted living, and home, health and palliative care. Canada in general, and Ontario in particular, has one of the highest rates of institutionalizing elders and one of the lowest rates of home care spending per capita amongst the developed countries of the world, according to the recent Queens University study “Aging Well”.

In Ontario, the long-term care facility budget is set to rise by 100% from $5 billion to $10 billion over the next 8 years due to the promised expansion of 30,000 new beds.

Additional home and senior community support funding is virtually ignored (the Ford government has promised $180 million each year for three years only). Ontario’s home care programs (with approximately $2 billion) support over 440,000 seniors each year and, according to experts, the program is in crisis.

The baby boomer generation is at the doorstep of elder care and the senior population is set to rise by some 50% over the next 10 years. Citizens should make their voice known about rebalancing investment in elder care. With over 4,000 resident deaths in Ontario’s long term care facilities, and still counting, our lives may depend on it.

Fire devastates heritage home in North Augusta

By Sally Smid One of the oldest homes in North Augusta was destroyed by fire on February 9. The home, on the corner of County Roads 6 and 15, could not be saved but it was fortunate that there were no injuries. The height and construction of the building added challenges for firefighters. The fire started in the kitchen and is considered not suspicious. Firefighters were just returning from a funeral visitation for Fred Boisvert, past fire chief of Augusta Fire Rescue for over 20 years. The building was the original site of the Humphries Hotel which was built in 1848. It became the Davis Hotel in 1874 and included a tavern and band-

stand at one time. It was destroyed by fire in 1902 and rebuilt by Davis’ widow. It later became a boarding house and then a private home. “I can barely breath,” posted Jess Ica. “My grandparents bought this house and the farm after WWII when they arrived in Canada as refugees and they lived there for 40 years.” Former owner Randy Terpstra was also quite emotional. “The beautiful banister on the stairs coming from the main floor in the stone side, was original from 1903.” The stone walls were left standing after the first fire. He explained that during his renovations there was plenty of evidence of the 1902 fire.

This time, sadly, the building has been deemed a total loss.

Athens fire claims the life of an 8 year old boy

By Sally Smid A tremendous sadness gripped the Athens community after the life of an an eight-year-old boy was tragically taken by a fire on Feb. 20 at a home on Upper Oak Leaf Road. Athens Township Fire Dept. was called to the scene at 5:30 pm. The structure was fully engulfed when they arrived. Mother April Greenham broke two ribs in a fall while attempting to rescue her son, the youngest of her three boys. “Their house and entire contents have been lost as well,” family friend Michelle Bos reported.

Three dogs and two cats also died in the fire. Bronson was a student at Pineview

Public School and counsellors were available for staff and students. Participating firefighters were also very saddened by this tragedy. Fire Chief Mike Smid explained that in the aftermath of the devastating fire the department spent Family Day with their “extended fire family”. “I couldn’t ask for a more professional group of individuals, and our thoughts go out to the bereaved family.” He also thanked the Leeds and Thousand Islands, Rideau Lakes, and Elizabethtown-Kitley fire departments for their quick response in mutual aid.

“I hope everyone takes the time to appreciate their family and hug everyone a little tighter.”

By proud member Tanya Hammond The Lyndhurst, Seeley’s Bay & District Chamber of Commerce is starting 2022 with big plans for their future and their members.

The Executive team has taken measures to incorporate with the intent of accessing more programs and perhaps funding.

Like other local businesses and organizations, the group welcomes the announcement by the government to lift restrictions regarding gatherings. Thus, the Chamber of Commerce has announced that they are resuming their Annual Spring Meet and Greet in Seeley’s Bay. The Meet and Greet is planned for April 21 and provides members with a chance to promote their products and services to other members and special guests that evening, built on the organization’s mission to serve its members by focusing on networking, education, and advocacy.

Regular networking means that the group can share ideas and take steps to help its members and the community further. Recently the village of Seeley’s Bay benefited from the installation of a custom-made poster board to display area events, business contacts and more. The project was led by Director/Membership Chair Heiner Kammann and inspired by Vice President Ken Davies, who brought the idea to the group after noticing the village’s existing board needed repair

The Chamber of Commerce is dedicated to promoting its members working closely with the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands (TLTI). For instance, Kim Goodman, Director of Community and Business Services for the township, supplied a copy of the township’s 2021 Annual Report discussing accomplishments and plans and reminded everyone about the Township’s Community Grants deadline and Bursary deadline.

Kim also hinted at an exciting project in the works to help support businesses and our community. Though unable to thoroughly discuss the particulars, the meeting conversation quickly turned to the Rural Business and Agricultural Expo, planned for June 5 at Furnace Falls Farm, and hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and TLTI. The Expo will give Chamber members yet another opportunity (at no additional cost) to get in front of potential customers to showcase their business.

The Lyndhurst, Seeley’s Bay & District Chamber of Commerce provides opportunities for shameless promotion, a voice at the table and a chance to share ideas to benefit area businesses and our residents.

This year, on the eve of Valentine’s Day, instead of an intimate dinner with my spouse, I spent time with over ninety other people from across Ontario, over Zoom, taking part in a meeting for the Leeds and Grenville Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society.

One might think a meeting like this would be an odd way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. However, the guest speaker, Dr. Catharine Wilson, a Professor of Rural History at the University of Guelph, soon pulled us into the wonderful world of rural diaries and the gift they bestow on future generations.

Catharine, the founder and director of The Rural Diary Archive (https:// ruraldiaries.lib.uoguelph. ca), discussed her introduction to diaries and her great-great-grandmother, Lucy Middagh’s diary that inspired Catharine’s creation of the archives in 2015.

The presentation was intriguing as we, the listeners, learned of local diarists such as Peter Sweeney of South Crosby and John Quinn of Lansdowne. The Rural Diary Archives “showcase over 200 Ontario diarists from 1800 to 1960,” and as Catharine points out, “you get drawn into these family dramas…the plots are real-life and include love and loss.”

Area historian Sue Warren recently donated digital copies of diaries from the Rideau Lakes area, helping to expand the archive. The archive includes diaries written

from all ages and religions. Catharine notes that most diaries were written for family consumption, and many took great pride in their penmanship. Other journals included pasted news clippings reminiscent of my grandmother’s notebooks.

Anyone can volunteer to help transcribe the diaries, says Catharine, helping to make them readable and searchable on the website. Catharine, an expert in 19th century rural Ontario and Canadian rural history, Fellow of The Royal Society of Canada, and Fellow of the Agricultural History Society, claims that when transcribing, you get “a feeling of getting to know them or a feeling of spending time with them [the individual diarists].” For instance, the diaries of Jemima Ripley from South Crosby are currently in need of transcribing and may be of interest to someone

who sews because of the content.

The evening spent on Zoom with members of the Leeds Grenville Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society (leedsandgrenville.ogs. on.ca) and guest Professor Catharine Wilson was one of education and romance. We explored the topic of rural diaries and the many lessons in business, love and life our ancestors have left for us.

With much more to learn, I look forward to Catharine’s upcoming book “Being Neighbours: Cooperative Work and Rural Culture, 18301960” (forthcoming, McGill-Queens University Press 2022). The reciprocal work bees like barn raising, quilting bees, and threshing bees that Catharine is currently studying with the help of Ontario farm diaries is a great reminder to us all of the power of cooperative effort.

Highlights from the Mallory Coach House Museum 2021-2022 Even though we have had various closures and restricted admittance, the Mallory Coach House Museum volunteers have been very active the past year.

In August 2021, we hosted a Vendor’s Market and Open House with Historical Demonstrators which was very successful with over 25 vendors taking part. We were also happy to offer tours of the Mallory Coach House by our two summer students. In September, we hosted the Thousand Islands Fine Art Show over 3 days.

A Christmas Craft and Bake Sale with vendors in both the Mallory Coach House and the Mallorytown Community Centre was organized in December.

Both venues had a lot of visitors and the take-out lunches were very popular.

During the year, weekly Tuesday work parties looked after the

many maintenance tasks required to keep the house, shed and gardens in good shape. One highlight was the decorating of the outside areas with hundreds of lights, wreaths and bows for the Christmas season.

We have welcomed visitors during the winter season by appointment and arranged for a MCH volunteer to give them a tour.

Because of the pandemic it has not been possible for us to host the yearly classroom visits from Front of Yonge School.

In January, with support from a grant from the Retired Teachers of Ontario, we created and delivered 6 educational kits about the Museum to the school so the children know we have not forgotten them.

Throughout the year volunteers have continued their work on the archives, cataloguing

many new additions to our collections. One special exhibit of 19th century pressed glass has just been displayed on new shelves in the central area of the house.

A key initiative this year has been the construction of a special room to highlight the history of the first glassworks factory in Canada, in Mallorytown. The committee has secured funding, organized shelving and display areas, researched the history, and acquired glass-blowing tools and original pieces of glass. The room will be opened to the public in the fall of 2022.

We are excited to announce that we are in the planning stages for summer festivals. We hope to have the Strawberry Social on Sunday June 26 and the Blueberry Social on Sunday, July 31. Both afternoon festivals feature delicious berry desserts,

tours of the Museum and live music in the gardens. We also plan to host the Mallorytown Village Fair on Saturday, Aug. 27. This full day event caters to families looking for a great day out. There will be children’s activities and games, local vendors and artisans, live music and homemade food.

We also plan to have the Museum open to the public

during the summer months with self-guided tours organized by our summer students. We look forward to welcoming visitors who want to learn more about the history of the Mallorytown area, including its schools, businesses, churches and families.

Zip. Nada. No savings, no plan. If this is you, you’re not alone – I too read that number with a huge sense of relief. Thank goodness, I’m not the only one working on Freedom 95. You’ll probably recognize me in a few years shuffling around town, pointing out the features of your next home with my cane.

I have to admit, my zero-retirement strategy has kept me awake at night, but somehow those midnight monetary anxiety moments have never seemed to materialize into actual cash in the bank. And all joking aside, this lack of savings for 32 per cent of Canadians is serious. But, all is not lost.

The one bright light that Canadians have been able to count on – especially in eastern Ontario in the last few years – is real estate. Mark Twain once said, “buy land, they’re not making it anymore”.

Well, the last two years in the Kingston and area real estate market have proven that saying to be truer than

ever.

Take home prices in and around Athens. In March of 2021, the median sale price of a single family home was $525,000. Median sale price in February of 2022? A whopping $625,000. That’s a median earning of $100K in equity in 11 months. So unless you’re a high risk two-bitcoin-gambler, you’d be hard pressed to find a better way to invest your money than in real estate. Anyone who bought a home in the region in or around 2019 has seen the value of that home at least double within three years.

The current market reflects the most basic of economic principles – supply and demand. There are many buyers in the market for a home, too few homes available, and borrowing money has never been cheaper. Most sellers are receiving multiple offers with the majority of local homes being sold for well over asking price. Market savvy sales reps are now putting realistic prices on homes, holding offers for five or six days, encourag-

ing buyer competition and maximizing the sale price to create a win for their seller clients.

Of course, COVID and lockdowns and working from home have also helped fuel this busy real estate market. People who were forced to work from home have now recognized they want to work from home, so they’re moving out of cities and into something more comfortable, like a rural pad with a lake view and high-speed Internet.

But what does that all mean? Your home, your cottage, your land has never been worth more money than it is right now. But is this a good time to sell? I offer a resounding and qualified “yes”. If you’re downsizing, yes, put the extra equity into your retirement fund. If you’re upsizing, absolutely, put the equity into your dream home. If you’re working from home and can live anywhere and have always wanted to live on a lake, yes. If you’ve inherited funds, a big yes, buy a home or an investment property.

The lack of inventory will keep the market insulated against rising interest rates for the foreseeable future, and historically, home prices rarely go down.

While prices may level off when the supply more adequately meets the demand, your single largest investment will still provide you with a roof. And if you’re considering buying an investment property, that property can provide you with a retirement income.

See where I’m going with this?

All is not lost. If you’re like me, your retirement fund is simply more cerebral than some others – we’re watching television in the living room or flipping pancakes in the kitchen of our retirement fund. If that’s the strategy, and the plan, then work extra hard to get that mortgage paid off, purchase that next investment property, or simply cash out your equity and enjoy your retirement. And please, don’t worry, your home can be – and right now possibly is – your best investment.

ONTARIO GOVERNMENT FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENTS The Ontario Maple Syrup Producers’ Association (OMSPA) announced the receipt of funding from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) for an Ontario Sector Development Project that will explore a revised strategic approach for the maple syrup industry in Ontario. OMAFRA’s support includes an $83,000 grant to explore quality assurance

In late January, MPP Clark announced a $1.5M Eastern Ontario Development Fund Investment to Biscuits Leclerc Ltee. for a new manufacturing plant in Brockville. The expansion of the leading Canadian food manufacturer Leclerc will see $100M invested locally and will create 200 new jobs. Leclerc purchased the former Procter & Gamble factory in Brockville. The $1.5M from the Government of Ontario will assist with the creation of new jobs and technologies. The arrival of Leclerc in the region will also have significant additional benefits. Burnbrae Farms, headquartered just north of Brockville in fellow SLCEDC municipality the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley, will be Leclerc’s egg supplier.

This will allow Burnbrae to deliver its goods to the new Leclerc plant in a matter of minutes. The end result will be a strengthened local economy, with businesses supporting each other.

Ontario is providing over $28M to support 322 projects through the Municipal Modernization Program to help small and rural municipalities across the province find better, more efficient ways to deliver local services for residents and businesses. Municipalities can use the funding to conduct reviews of local services and administrative operations to find efficiencies, including accelerating the creation of new housing through streamlined development approvals and working with neighbouring municipalities to share services. With the Municipal Modernization Program, as well as the new Streamline Development Approval Fund and the Audit and Accountability Fund, Ontario is helping municipalities across the province make their planning and approvals processes more efficient in order to unlock and fast-track new housing to address the housing supply crisis. On Canada’s Agriculture Day (Feb. 22) the OFA celebrated farming and food, and put out a reminder that buying local food is good for the economy, better for the environment, supports our domestic food supply chain, contributes to farm businesses and rural communities and encourages the preservation of farmland for future generations. Ontario continues to lose an average of 175 acres of productive farmland to urban development every day, equating to a loss of 5 family farms per week. The OFA warns that without serious intervention to preserve farmland, the Canadian foods we all love to enjoy could potentially disappear forever. Re-establishing the connection between customers and local farmers is the goal of OFA’s new pilot project alongside Farm & Food Care Ontario — Source Local. The OFA released a statement in early February noting that they are not responsible for organizing the tractor rallies that targeted Queen’s Park and local MPP and MP offices.

Auto Care Why drivers of all ages should take a closer look at their driving habits (NC) It’s no secret that most people consider themselves good drivers, but as more Canadians take to the road, there is a real conversation – or debate – to be had about what safe driving looks like. You might be surprised to learn that the challenges can be different depending on your age.

According to a 2021 survey from insurance provider Aviva Canada, almost half of all Canadians picked younger drivers – those aged 20 to 30 – as having the most claims. But insurance claims data show that 41 to 50-year-olds are the ones who got into the most accidents, closely followed by those aged 31 to 40.

The same claims data shows that younger drivers are more frequently involved in rear-end related accidents and accidents due to left turns at intersections and changing lanes, compared to other ages. These types of claims are more severe and likely to lead to more injuries and damage to the vehicle.

On the other hand, drivers over 65 had more frequent claims for hitting a parked car or backing up and striking a fence, pole or sign – so this group should be more wary when navigating parking lots, particularly as we return to regular shopping habits.

Many crashes resulting from speeding and distracted driving are often preventable – such as hitting stationary objects, rear ending other vehicles and inattentive lane changes. Although auto accidents are not something that any driver wants to think about, taking measures to drive more safely can prevent the stress that comes with getting into a collision, even a minor one.

No matter what your age, an insurance policy that meets your unique needs is essential for protecting yourself, your vehicle and your wallet. If you’re ever in an accident, make your insurance company or broker one of your first calls. They will be able to help you through the claims process to get you back to normal as soon as possible.

A good way to tackle the long lists of things to do and people to invite, is for each partner to write down their “nice to haves” and “need to haves”, rank them in order of importance, and assign an estimated cost to each. Then compare lists and see which items you agree on, and which items will require discussion and compromise. For example, you may both want a nice sit-down meal that will be pricey. To be able to afford it, you may each have to cut back on some of your “nice to haves”, such as elaborate flower arrangements, or the length of your guest list.

Be patient with each other during the planning process. Practice “active listening” to really hear and understand your partner’s point of view.

The communication, and financial, skills you develop during your wedding planning process will serve you both well during your, hopefully, many years together.

Beulah Livingstone passed away on February 8. She was in her 100th year. She participated in a variety of organizations and played the organ and piano for church services and events. Perhaps best known for her dedication to collecting local history in her many scrapbooks for over 80 years, Beulah started collecting newspaper clippings when she was twelve and much of the detailed collection in later years was from The Mural. Beulah helped to “solve many an argument” by looking back into her collection, aided by her organized index of entries.

Aquatarium’s Capital Campaign nears goal On February 11, Mayor Pat Sayeau of Township of Edwardsburgh Cardinal signed a cheque from the Port of Johnstown making a donation for $180,000 over 3 years to support the new anchor exhibit (“The Port of Johnstown”) the Aquatarium is planning to unveil in late 2022. Since early 2021 the Aquatarium has had an ongoing capital campaign, the “Champions’ Capital Campaign” as a tribute to two of the Aquatarium’s biggest champions: Ian Coristine, former Aquatarium Steering Committee member and donor as well as Paul Fournier, former member of the fundraising committee and donor. Both men died in 2020. The committee has taken a regional approach to its fundraising and has successfully partnered with the Port of Johnstown and the Township of Edwardsburgh-Cardinal, together with other sponsors, for a new signature exhibit called The Port of Johnstown. The interactive ball exhibit will feature the process of agricultural harvesting, the movement of grain through the elevators, its storage, delivery to a waiting freighter and shipping, reflecting the activities of the Port. Pop-up coffee shop fosters sense of well-being during Bell Let’s Talk Day at MVL

By Sally Smid A coffee and doughnut pop-up shop took place at Maple View Lodge as part of this year’s Bell Let’s Talk Day. The event was planned by the Lodge’s Program and Support Department. Manager Brittany Knowles explained, “We knew as Bell Let’s Talk Day was approaching that many staff and residents were getting tired due to the constant changes faced as a result of the pandemic. It was decided that there would be no better way to sup-

port the mental health of staff and residents than a pop-up coffee shop with doughnuts!” Knowles explained that it was hoped that the event would spark a sense of warmth, nostalgia and comfort. Many at the residence could recall special trips to a coffee shop and this has no longer been possible. Staff and residents were invited to stop by the tuck shop window which was much like “ordering at a drive thru”. Many related their memories about going out for coffee and a doughnut and socializing

with friends and family. It was a chance to talk with others which is important for mental health, the very message of Bell Let’s Talk Day. Maple View Lodge is

grateful to the Tackaberry family who supported the day and helped make it a success. The smiles at the “coffee shop window” certainly said it all!

Poppy lives on and continues to influence everyone’s lives as we remember his kind, gentle ways. He proved that people can still live highly influential, productive lives despite challenges with dementia.

Winter doesn’t put an end to enjoyable events at Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust (TIWLT). It’s a time to stay active and plan gardens! “Just because the snow is on the ground doesn’t mean that we’re hibernating!“commented organizer Marnie Ross. TIWLT has many exciting events happening throughout the winter months, including snowshoe hikes, science cafés, and opportunities for providing input to the 2022 Glen Elbe garden plan. A Science Café with Chris Wooding of Ironwood Organics took place virtually on February 15, featuring the science of gardening with nature. He has also hosted events on his farm. Rideau Lakes Fire and Rescue “meet and greet” on Feb. 19 at the

Portland Community Hall was an opportunity to see the new fire trucks.

Youngsters were welcomed and refreshments were provided. The event was also a way to thank the community for the support received during the recent period of disruption caused by the loss of the Portland Fire Hall.

The specific cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Despite all, Fire and Rescue services have continued. The Township is actively working to determine if there is any adverse environmental impact, and while initial groundwater reports indicate that there have been none as of yet, measures to limit any potential environmental impacts are in place. A consultant has been hired to determine the best location for the rebuilding of Station #2.

The insurance provider is covering the cost of this redevelopment on a likefor-like basis. When approval is given from the fire marshal’s office, the site can be cleaned up. For updates visit the Township of Rideau Lakes website.

FINANCE Helpful tax info shared during presentation to Athens Council

Mary Lynn Villeneuve, Manager of the Volunteer Centre of St. Lawrence Rideau, made a presentation to Athens Council at their February meeting. Despite pandemic challenges, the Centre saw opportunities and was able to “pivot and grow to continue to be able to support the social and economic well-being of the communities they serve”. The Centre provides trade shows and community events and does some fundraising. Their Financial Literacy and Empowerment Program is especially helpful for youth. Perhaps their most valuable assistance is the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program which has provided 37 years of service. It offers free income tax filing for low-income filers. During the pandemic, 24 trained volunteers have managed to complete 2,600-2,800 tax returns. Municipal offices can be drop off locations. A recent study estimated that 10-12% of Canadians don’t file taxes and miss out on approximately $1.7 billion. This program has been identified as an important strategy for poverty reduction. Frost Fest follow up

“I’m really proud of the community for embracing such a different Frost Fest this year, and to all the businesses and individuals who donated to our Online Silent Auction,” commented organizer Ann Chase who also noted the dedication of the Frost Fest Committee. The event was sponsored by the Seeley’s Bay Lions Club.

Ridgeway Confections announced that Frost Fest’s Parry the Penguin did not “see his shadow” indicating an early spring! Ridgeway donated $2 to Frost Fest for every chocolate penguin sold.

Most events took place online once again. There were lots of winners.

Honourable mention went to Shelby Udell and Family.

Frost Fest buttons were sold once again and lots of participants were awarded great prizes if their button number was chosen. Fireworks took place on February 19 to close off the Festival.

They were sponsored by Seeley’s Bay Iron & Metal and refreshments were provided by Bay Auto.

While it was disappointing that Frost Fest could not be in person again this year, there was still lots of fun to be had and everyone is looking forward to next year.

Participants in the North Augusta Winter Carnival had to endure

a cold windy day on February 26 in North Augusta. It was a day for skating, skiing, disc golf and “snow pitch baseball”. If you did not have equipment, the Augusta Library provided a pop-up lending library with equipment. “It’s been a community effort! Many hands contribute including local organizations,” commented organizer Bill Tennant. A real highlight of the winter event had to be the hot chili, hot dogs and hot chocolate available at the canteen!

The community is also happy that the Creekside Diner has reopened. It was a great way to celebrate winter and enjoy a bright snowy day, get some exercise and have some social time in a village that always has an abundance of community spirit! Sally Smid/Submitted Photo

StoryWalks in the Biosphere

A great way to get the family outside for exercise and fresh air while enjoying literature is to participate in a StoryWalk. There is a new installation at Landon Bay, Lansdowne which features the book The Snow Knows

by Jennifer McGrath. This story takes you on an adventure through the winter landscape to look for clues and investigate tracks. The Thousand Islands National Park and the Children’s Services of United Counties of

Leeds and Grenville helped to support this walk.

Program Manager Kelly McGann reported, “The upcoming story at Landon Bay will be “Super Red Riding Hood” which will be installed on March 11 and it will be up until at least March 20. This story is on loan from the EarlyON Centre, who have been working with us on the StoryWalks in the Biosphere for the past 2 years. There are about 7 permanent installations that will go up this year throughout the Frontenac Arch Bio-

sphere Region.”

Participants can also take some time to slow down and enjoy the wonders of winter while exploring the beautiful trails of Landon Bay. The Trail begins at the stone arch and meanders through the forest and then towards the Lookout. This section is very kid friendly and those who don’t want to complete the entire trail can opt to take the shortcut back to the laneway, after the bridge.

Ontario Heritage Week

Every third week of February, Ontario Heritage Trust invites Ontarians to participate in Heritage Week. This year’s theme is “We grow from our roots – our heritage and histories”. The pandemic has led to some residents finding more time to explore their family history.

Our local heritage organizations often try to use the week to stimulate awareness of heritage resources and heritage-related issues within their communities, and to honour those involved in this pursuit. Many have resources to assist in exploring family roots.

The pandemic has been difficult for heritage groups and it has been necessary to dig deeper and to pivot to virtual methods. Much is posted on Facebook which has generated lots of interest

and sharing.

We have been losing various historic buildings and individuals who have championed the cause of local history. Volunteers are very much needed. Some of our sites are opening again for in-person visits, tours and research. As Heritage Week started on February 21, it was a great activity for Family Day. The Athens Museum is opening new displays and has a variety of opportunities for volunteers. The Athens Library was provided with a heritage display. Many local sites are also preparing to hire summer students.

While the pandemic has often defined our connections with our local history sites, Heritage Week remains an important opportunity for us to reflect on how heritage is preserved, promoted and honoured and how it often shapes our future.

New portable pump for FoY firefighters Front of Yonge firefighters are thankful to Enbridge pipelines for a new portable pump. The new piece of equipment will be on Tanker 2 to replace an aging pump.

It was made possible through the Safe Communities First Responder Grant Program. It is a 400 gpm pump with two 65mm discharges and a 100mm intake. The Department will now be better equipped to provide local fire protection service.

Gone fishin’!

Fisherman’s Hardware in Seeley’s Bay was very thankful to all who participated in their recent Fishing Derby. “There was a great turn out,” commented Ashley Neff. “Congrats to winner Chris Vankoughnett for the biggest Pike at 9.2!”

Chris received a prize of $300. Actually, everyone who participated received a prize! A huge thank you was extended to all who donated food and treats for this annual event. “We couldn’t have done it without the support of our wonderful locals,” Neff remarked. It is hoped that many will return for their next fishing event in July. This up and coming business has a growing inventory and many area residents are pleased to be able to shop local. Fishing fun in Lyndhurst

Kids and adults of all ages took to local lakes on Saturday, February 26, to participate in the 14th Annual Lyndhurst Ice Fishing Derby hosted by Wing’s Live Bait & Tackle.

John Sideris and Ruth Howard, owners of the popular outdoors outfitters store, ensured that all 200 participants received a prize regardless of their luck at fishing.

Judging from the number of weighins and those proudly posing with their recent catch, it seems there were many successful anglers on the day of the event.

The derby rules stipulated no walleye and only pike over 4 lbs be eligible alongside other types of fish to help protect the fish population regarding those particular species, an essential aspect of fishing responsibly.

Though prizes were a nice benefit for those who purchased derby tickets, the most notable motive of many was to get out with family and friends to have some

fishing fun this winter.

John and Ruth are thankful for all those who donate prizes each year for the big day, and they are proud to say that all money received on the ticket sales goes directly back into the prize pot.

Winter Olympics fun at Pineview P.S.

While the 2022 Winter Olympics was taking place half way around the world, many of our local schools were competing in their own version of the Olympics! With so many restrictions, it was great for staff and students to have some fun, exercise and excitement! Activities also connected with the school curriculum.

At Pineview Public School, each class was assigned a country participating in the Olympics.

The “opening ceremonies” on Feb. 4 involved each class bringing a torch to the office where they were greeted by Superintendent Marsha McNair. Gold medalists from each class participated in competitions and a tally was taken to see which “country” would get the most points.

Gold, silver, and bronze medalists were chosen in events that included basketball, hockey shootout, snow stacking, running, and turbo javelin competitions. Closing ceremonies included class parades.

classes would have the honour of competing in a Minute to Win It Challenge where Principal Chris Boston would have whipped cream on his head and students would throw Cheezies at him to see how many could stick to his head.

Teacher and organizer Keira Robertson-Long remarked, “They’re so excited. It’s a really positive spin on the learning experience.” Superintendent McNair commented, “The energy in the school was electric and the kids were having so much fun.

I wish all students across the district the best of luck.”

“I am so proud of our students,” said Principal Boston. “Seeing how excited they are each day to learn and participate is incredible. Each class has really embodied the Olympic spirit and promoted a great deal of school spirit!” He thanked Keira Robertson-Long who put in so much time and effort to organize the games.

Competition 2022-04: Reception Attendant 1 position with 35 hours/ week including weekends, start date to be confirmed The Attendant will be responsible for accepting and processing reservations for campsite and cottage rentals along with answering inquiries related to the park from the general public. The attendant will also be responsible for balancing financial records and operating various computer programs.

Preference will be given to candidates with a valid Class G drivers’ license, first aid / CPR certification, WHMIS 2015 training and COVID vaccinations. A minimum of Grade 11 education or an equivalent in related practical experience is required. Candidates must be mature, responsible and able to work in both a team and individual environment.
