The diary of Peter Sweeney is the only personal record of a lockmaster on the Rideau Canal. From 1839 until 1850 he faithfully recorded his daily life in South Crosby Township. It remains a great record of life in Leeds County, as well as life in the early days of the canal.

Sue Warren, a graduate of University of Toronto and Queens University, is the retired head librarian of the Rideau Lakes

Public Library, as well as the author of two books on Leeds County History. In the early 1980s she worked as a historical interpreter on the Rideau, where she had the opportunity to transcribe the Sweeney journal from the original source.

We’re all hearing a lot about COVID-19 vaccines these days. But between our busy lives and the endless sources of information bombarding you, it’s hard to know which voices to trust in separating fact from fiction.

All of this might leave you a bit confused and feeling hesitant to roll up your sleeve when it comes time to get your shot, even though you know it’s one of the most important and effective things we can do to help put the pandemic behind us.

Let’s make one thing clear, having questions and even being nervous about getting a COVID-19 vaccine doesn’t make you a bad person. It’s natural and, frankly, people should be engaged and informed about every aspect of their health care.

District Family Health Team, says one of the biggest concerns people have raised is that the vaccines were developed too quickly to be safe.

“These vaccines were produced in record time, but there are very good reasons for that,” said Stobo. “This is a global pandemic unlike any in our lifetime. It has put the health and well-being of people in every country at risk, so the response had to be unprecedented.”

In response, two things in particular happened immediately: researchers collaborated as never before and governments around the world invested billions into the process.

This helped scientists quickly build on the tremendous amount of knowledge that researchers had gained into coronaviruses following the SARS outbreak in 2003.

As well, the funding al-

lowed manufacturers to scale up production as the vaccines were in the final stages of approval.

“What’s important to understand is that no corners were cut. Every step was followed in the usual journey a vaccine must take from research to clinical trials to government approval to production before making its way into your arm,” explained Stobo. “It all just happened faster because of the global urgency.”

OK, we know we can trust that the vaccines are safe, effective and have been approved by governments around the world. But will they make you sick?

“These vaccines don’t contain a live virus, so you can’t get COVID-19 from them,” said Stobo.

“They’re known as mNRA vaccines, which deliver the genetic blueprint for our bodies to make spike proteins, the harmless part of a coro-

navirus that attaches to our cells. This triggers an immune response and we develop the antibodies we’ll need to fight off the real virus if we’re infected.”

While Stobo noted these are the first mNRA vaccines authorized for use, researchers have actually been working on them for decades. The government funding and cooperation among researchers put everything into overdrive and got us to the finish line much faster.

“It’s natural to have questions, I just want to assure people there are many trusted resources available to find the factual information they need and deserve,” said Stobo. “Start by having a conversation with your primary care provider or by calling our local public health unit’s vaccine information line at: 1-800-660-5853 ext 2100.”

After a car accidentally drove into the wall of the Athens Family Health Clinic last summer, a darkly humorous comment was made that the Clinic could become a “drive-thru”. Fortunately, no one was injured, however there was structural damage involving the brick wall, two offices and a closet. “The integrity of the building was not compromised,” explained Athens Health Service Centre Board Chair Les Coutlee. “The inside work was completed in July.” The stonemasons could not take on the task of putting new stonework onto the main entrance wall until recently. It had to be entirely replaced as no matching bricks were available. Parking curbs were installed to help prevent similar incidents from occurring. Executive Director Michael Jiggins said “We’re pretty excited today to show off our building’s new look! Thank you to the crew from Norwood & Co., who not only did a beautiful job, but communicated and cooperated with us to minimize the disruption for patients and staff.

Maple View Lodge grapples with hiring challenges exacerbated by COVID

By Sally Smid Hiring in the healthcare sector is extremely challenging and far more complicated than one might think. While Maple View Lodge has remained COVID free except for one false positive test, like other care homes, the Lodge faces many hurdles with pandemic protocol bringing new stresses and demands on the staff.

Administrator Tracy Jordan recently explained that it was already challenging to fill nursing positions and that COVID has amplified the problem and brought it to the public’s attention.

Vacancies, most notably for Personal Support Workers (PSW), are primarily related to temporary absences of unknown length. “The requirement to have a single health care employer is the right decision however this adds to recruitment challenges,” Jordan explains.

Last fall a PSW Return of Service Program was available to help attract graduates to care homes and agencies.

The Ministry initiative provided a $5,000 incentive to support hiring in exchange for a six month commitment and MVL was successful in securing two such positions with a January 31 deadline.

The program included several restrictions and in the end positions could not be filled.

MVL recently announced that they have received approval from Ontario Health for the “Return of Service With a Nurse”, the Community Commitment Program for Nurses (CCPN), which is

Glen Elbe Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust (TIWLT) continues to renovate the historic property at Glen Elbe, southeast of Athens on Highway 42. The historic house, once known as Evergreen Lodge, was the home of the Browns. Mary Brown Topping was a teacher for many years at the nearby Glen Elbe School. Her son Bruce Topping recently presented the original school ledger to TIWLT member Marnie Ross which will have an honoured place in the finished Learning Centre. Paul Cote, who is writing a new book which will involve the history of local schools, will make use of the ledger to obtain valuable information and the Athens Heritage Museum is receiving a copy for their archives. Brockville councilor launches Heart Behind The Mask program

By Mallory Day Wearing a mask everyday can be hard but it’s especially difficult for frontline and essential workers. Brockville Councilor Jeff Earle created a program called Heart Behind The Mask which honours and highlights hardworking frontline workers.

Earle said he came up with the program’s concept and decided to plan the whole thing.

“I talked about it with a few people and they agreed, so I just started it,” Earle stated. “For all the frontline workers, I just wanted to honour them a little bit.”

Earle noted he had contacted a friend who prints out certificates and he contacted Swiss Cha-

let in Brockville, Richard’s Coffee House in Brockville and the new Bridgeview restaurant in Johnstown for gift certificates for the prize winner.

“I have 25 awards I’m going to give out,” he mentioned. “At least after a hard day’s work, someone else can cook and do the dishes for them.”

Earle said the first winner was awarded two weeks ago.

“The ones that work the hardest are usually the ones who want the least recognition,” he said. “So far we’ve had two ladies that we’ve presented these to.” These recipients were from the Athens area.

Earle said he’s trying not to set any limitations as to where the winner

has to be located, but he said he would like to try to keep the program local. He states, “I’m looking for someone to tell me, there’s someone who really deserves this.”

“As long as they’re doing a good job,” he noted. “I’d be a little less enthused if someone nominated someone from Toronto but I also don’t want to geofence it and have to tell someone that they can’t have it because they live on the wrong side of the road.”

Walking through a cemetery can certainly bring life into perspective!

Many area cemeteries have historic roots and are regulated by provincial legislation. The cemetery is a symbol of respect for those who came before us and preserves not only the memory of loved ones but local history as well.

One local cemetery made great progress in restoration last year. The Robertson Cemetery Board consists of twelve volunteers and is registered under the Township of Rideau Lakes and the Bereavement Authority of Ontario. The Board successfully applied for a Rideau Lakes Township Community Grant last fall and received $1,200. More funding has been received for this year.

Board member Tom Sawyer who is in charge of maintenance notes, “Cemeteries are highly visible and provide a needed public service.”

His father Lloyd did much resto-

ration in 1990 and built the present archway. Cemetery maintenance seems to have become a family tradition. “It has allowed me to reconnect with the community and give back to it in a meaningful way,” Sawyer remarked. “Our local history is quite fascinating!”

Sawyer and his helpers did some amazing work restoring and cleaning stones at the Cemetery in Delta.

Special cleaning products were used and 109 headstones were cleaned, leaving 40 stones for the future with some requiring more costly structural repair. The need for more extensive restoration work will be evaluated.

Many area cemeteries have become the responsibility of the municipality. Their upkeep is often not a priority and there are usually no perpetual care funds to maintain them. Workers need proper instruction to carry out such projects which are very much needed in many of our aging rural cemeteries.

Living in Leeds County With Tanya Hammond

What does a retired Army Intelligence Officer with a sweet side business, a famous symphony musician from the ’70s, a boy with a stutter turned Town Crier, and a man who can put Official Judge for Holstein Canada and church organist on his resume have in common?

These gentlemen are currently Councillors for the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands.

They are our neighbours, our friends and the people who have pledged to help keep our community moving forward.

Gordon Ohlke, one of the two Councillors representing Ward 2, is relatively new to the Lyndhurst community; however, he has made it a mission to “bee” involved and has put down roots on his farm on Thomas Road.

It is there that this retired Officer from the Canadian Military has been as busy as a bee building his apiary as part of Tippeln Estate Farm. A family heritage that dates back to the 1800s near the Baltic Sea shores and an interest in

helping the environment led Gord to his decision to delve into the sweet business of caring for bees.

Mark Jamison, who stands alongside his colleague from Ward 2 in representing his constituents, is no stranger to the stage. A University of Toronto Music graduate, Mark travelled the world as a full-time symphony musician in the 70’s playing double bass, sharing the stage with classical artists of that time and jazz icons like Ella Fitzgerald.

He played anything from local auditoriums to Carnegie Hall, for crowds ranging from high school students to those at the CNE awaiting John Denver. Today, Mark and his wife Jill, a highly respected cellist, call Seeley’s Bay home and together, though Mark no longer plays bass, they share their lifelong love of music and community connection.

Brian Mabee, Ward 1 Councillor, who is also comfortable in front of a crowd, might be best known in the area as the Town Crier for Ganano-

que for the last 15 years.

However, a lesser-known fact about Brian is the stutter he had up until his 20’s. Able to overcome his speech impediment, Brian went on to do public speaking and can now be found bravely bellowing announcements for all to hear across the beloved county in which he was born and raised.

Terry Fodey, Ward 1 Councillor, also took the time to tell me more about himself. I expect there isn’t much that those in the area don’t know about this fourth-generation township resident who comes from a long line of farmers. Terry’s pride in his family and the life he has made with his wife of 44 years, Famia, is at the top of his list of accomplishments.

Terry’s experience as an Official Judge for Holstein Canada and his extensive background in agriculture come as no surprise; however, I did not expect to discover that Terry was a church organist for fifteen years in his younger days.

With the lingering pandemic, cold weather and postponed March Break, families will be looking for safe and enjoyable ways to enjoy the remaining weeks of winter. While many are disappointed that travel and gathering plans are restricted, there is still lots to do right in our own backyards to stay entertained while engaging in exercise and adventure. Here are a few ideas to get you started: - Kids can have a blast using their imaginations during a “family campout” in the living room, a costume party or a scavenger hunt.

- Fort building, snow sculpting and sledding hills are great ways to burn off energy for children and adults alike. Get active in the snow with your kids and relive your childhood

winters.

• The Triangle Ski Club and several local libraries (e.g., Augusta and Rideau) lend snowshoes, skis, sleds and more.

• The 1000 Islands Parkway trail, the Cataraqui Trails and the Mac Johnson Wildlife Area are fantastic spaces in which to exercise, explore and decompress.

• At KIN Park (2311 Harlem Rd, Portland) there is a chance to enter a contest before March 12 by submitting number of toboggan runs, kms of cross country skiing and snowshoeing, or a winter photo to vbourget@hotmail.com • The Township is keeping sidewalks cleared in Athens and the Centennial Park track so that residents can keep exercising this winter.

• North Augusta has a skating rink which is lit at night and there are many

lakes and ponds that are excellent outdoor rinks (while keeping protocols and ice safety in mind).

• Many libraries have museum passes and activity backpacks that can be borrowed which include Parks Canada passes and coupons.

• Elgin Bowling Lanes has reopened with special protocol in place.

• Local cottage rentals are fun getaways that won’t interfere with travel/gathering restrictions.

Don’t let the pandemic get in the way of making special memories. We have been given an opportunity to explore other ways of embracing community life while letting go of old expectations. It’s been said that “a change is as good as a rest”; activities other than the traditional travel and large gathering options can be just as rewarding!

Wedding planning during a pandemic - a personal story

By Mallory Day Planning a wedding can be challenging at any time as it can be tricky to find the perfect place and your preferred date.

But planning a wedding during a pandemic is even harder!

My fiance and I became engaged in September 2020, and I immediately jumped into planning mode, in search of the perfect venue and date for us to tie the knot. Having our hearts set on getting married in the spring, we viewed a

handful of venues falling within our budget.

We discovered that either prices had increased due to the pandemic, or that all of the weddings that had been previously booked had been postponed to our preferred date. We finally managed to find a venue that we both love and that is within our price range, but unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we have been put on a waitlist.

Having to move a wedding date can lead to other complications.

For example, a close friend whose children are in our wedding are now no longer able to attend our potential date because another wedding they’re in has also been postponed to the same date.

Drive-by celebrations

By Sally Smid Celebrating special milestones and showing community support have been challenging during pandemic lockdowns and restrictions.

A favourite workaround has been special “drive-bys” which are like a community parade, such as the one in January for Dale Rodgers of Athens who is recovering from a stroke. His family and friends arranged the event and Dale watched from his farmhouse window.

Evelyn Haggett of Addison also had quite a drive-by celebration, and yet another recent event was the birthday drive-by and walk-by for two local women who turned 90 years old on February 24! Doreen Wright of Athens and Noreen Bulloch of Lansdowne are twin sisters who were born in Earnestown, weighing just over one pound each. Fortunately, their aunt was a nurse and cared for them. They were surrounded with mason jars of hot water inside a dresser drawer near the wood stove which served as an “incubator”. It was a true miracle to see them celebrate their 90th, with a parade on a sunny February 21, at Doreen’s Wiltse St. home. The parade was only complicated by a fire department call at the same time! “We never expected anything like this,” Noreen remarked.

A hearty congratulations to all who make the choice to stay safe and find alternate ways to show they care while avoiding large gatherings!

Luke’s Harvest Cafe an inspiration to struggling rural businesses Luke’s Harvest Cafe opened on Athens Main Street approximately 16 years ago. It has been a very popular place to stop by, for both locals and for those who make a special trip for Luke’s specialty coffees and teas, unique pastries and gourmet sandwiches. It’s been busy times for Luke and Susan Thomas, parents of four, who moved here from New Brunswick in 1997. When the pandemic struck, the couple decided to reinvent their business. By Sally Smid Grade 1 French Immersion student Jack Riggle had lots of fun celebrating the 100th day of school at Pineview Elementary School.

He dressed in his 100 Day Crown and wore his “100 necklace”.

From the time of early European settlement in the 17th and 18th centuries, the Irish came to Ontario, but after the War of 1812, increasing numbers, mostly Catholic, came to Canada to work on the canals and railroads and in the lumber industry. They helped build much of the local infrastructure. Local historian Susan Warren notes, “The Irish not only helped build the Rideau Canal but contributed significantly to the development of Leeds and Grenville.”

Sadly, many died from malaria, and tensions between the Irish Protestants and Catholics were evident even locally with many episodes of violence and anger. Today,

In 2004, March 17 was proclaimed “Irish Heritage Day”, recognizing their huge contribution in developing the province. Our current Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious observance.

March 17 is the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland. It celebrates the Irish and is a day for “the wearin’ of the green”, visits to “the pub”, parades, and Irish music when we can “all be Irish for a day”!

Of course this year it may be quite a bit different with COVID restrictions, but no doubt there will be Irish stew and lots of fun with treats, green shamrocks, and leprechauns. And “faith and begorrah” with March Break being postponed until April, it is also a way for families to have some special fun.

Check in with your local library for St. Patrick’s Day themed books and crafts. Decorating our homes and dressing in green can be a fun and memorable tradition for schools and families.

Affordable housing a widespread rural issue

By Sally Smid Lack of affordable housing is a local issue that warrants the attention of policy makers. Many seniors especially are forced to leave their familiar, supportive rural communities to find housing in the cities. This is detrimental for both our seniors, and for our communities that benefit from their valuable contributions. Concerned Rideau Lakes resident Paula Banks remarks, “It is time for local governments to give us some real support.

We need initiatives and real solutions!”

Rideau Lakes Mayor Arie Hoogenboom noted that Rideau is considering the formation of a task force on affordable housing. “I am hopeful that we can create new units that will help to stabilize and

revitalize our villages and hamlets,” he noted. Their not-for-profit buildings model has the capacity to grow. He explained that there are local building sites that may be able to be used and the rewrite of Rideau’s Official Plan will encourage more affordable housing.

Front of Yonge’s Mayor Roger Haley commented, “We have problems with finding affordable housing as well, especially for seniors who may want to downsize. Real estate prices have gone through the roof!”

Homeowners can sell their million dollar properties in the cities and can generally buy for much less in rural areas. Further, many employees can now work from home, thereby removing from the equation the issue of long commutes. These factors can

lead to a rapid increase in demand for homes in rural areas, with communities scrambling to catch up.

Valley View Court and Maple View Lodge expansion could help alleviate this issue. The County has also struck an affordable housing task force to help encourage more affordable choices.

MP Michael Barrett commented, “Affordability is an important issue for our communities. With the government starting pre-budget consultations in our region, more support for families, seniors, small business and local industries should be included, and our municipalities should be supported on important infrastructure projects like housing as well as support for more affordable broadband Internet services and cell phone prices.”

5 simple tax tips for 2021 (NC) In a normal year, taxes can be complicated. This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filing taxes will be different and potentially more confusing for many of us who experienced a change in income or employment terms, or received government financial support and benefits.

1. Take note of key dates and stay ahead.

It’s important to file your taxes on time to avoid any penalties or interruption of benefits. If you owe, you’ll need to be even more vigilant as the CRA can charge you penalties of five per cent on that amount, plus

an additional one per cent for each month you fail to file, for a maximum of 12 months.

2. Stay organized.

Before you sit down to file or seek help from a tax expert, gather any forms, slips and receipts that may be needed. Keeping your receipts organized and doing so in advance can help make filing your taxes easier.

3. Don’t leave money on the table.

Tax credits can be a big help if you’re looking to reduce the amount of taxes owed or to maximize your refund. Do your research or seek help from a tax expert so you can claim all the credits that apply to you, including any new

ones that were introduced due to the pandemic.

4. Take advantage of free tax calculators.

“Using a calculator can help simplify the tax process and make it easy to figure out how much tax you may need to pay, or if the CRA owes you,” says Gittens. “It also helps you navigate any tax implications from changes in your employment circumstances or from benefits received in relation to the pandemic.”

5. Ask for help.

If you’re concerned about preparing your own return, ask for a hand. A trained tax expert will always point you in the right direction and answer any questions you may have.

FINANCE The scoop on property assessments

By Sally Smid Many local residents have expressed their concerns about the assessment of their properties due to rising property values.

Athens Township CAO explains, “This was not a re-assessment year, so in our Township assessments did not take a huge increase. We are seeing properties assessed and taxed at a value in our system selling for anywhere from $100,000-$400,000 over asking price!” The Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) is an independent corporation funded by all Ontario municipalities. Its role is to accurately assess and classify all properties in Ontario, in compliance with Ontario regulations. Assessment Updates are conducted every four years.

Property owners receive notices in the mail from MPAC updating the value of their properties. Due to the pandemic, Ontario has postponed the 2020 Up-

date. The 2021 property tax year will continue to be based on the fully phasedin January 1, 2016 current values. The 2021 property tax will remain the same unless there have been changes. MPAC continues to review changes to properties, renovations and new builds.

Rideau Lakes Township Mayor Arie Hoogenboom noted the increased property values and reported, “Any reassessments will not occur until 2022 and even then significant value increases have in the past been phased in by the province. Taxes are determined by multiplying the market value by the tax rate set by the township. If we see significant increases in assessment and market values we would likely reduce the tax rate.” To not do so, he feels, would be taking advantage of tax payers. Rideau normally takes advantage of new assessments coming from new builds, which helps cover increasing costs.

MP Michael Barrett commented, “We have put forward a motion that would stop the government from raising taxes during the pandemic, and will continue to find ways to lower taxes and regulations for workers and businesses. We were able to secure more help for small businesses and entrepreneurs by cancelling the government’s audits on them, and increasing the wage subsidy and flexibility in the rent subsidy. We will keep working to fix gaps in the government’s COVID-19 economic plan to improve their response to get more help directly to people.”

MPP Steve Clark has just announced that Ontario is providing property tax and energy bill rebates to help businesses to cover the time of COVID restrictions. Hopefully this will help to make a difference for those who have major concerns about assessments and taxes during these challenging times.

Rideau Lakes Business Network talks real estate

By Tanya Hammond A larger group than usual tuned into the recent Rideau Lakes Business Network Zoom meeting to listen to guest speaker Thomas Uhryniw from Exit Realty AXIS. Mr. Uhryniw discussed the current real estate market, describing the meagre housing inventory and the increased sales prices, which came as no surprise to those listening. COVID has undoubtedly stimulated the housing market in this region as people continue to outbid each other in the hopes of buying themselves a way out of the more heavily populated cities like Ottawa and Toronto.

Waterfront properties are selling at a premium, with more people purchasing secondary properties and more people choosing to relocate because they can now work remotely. Rideau Lakes Township Councillor Bob Lavoie chimed in, providing his thoughts on the building boom that the township has been experiencing with an increase in the number of new homes and cottage builds.

The discussion expanded to include surrounding commercial spaces as well, with Mr. Uhryniw noting that the village of Westport current-

ly has a zero-vacancy rate. Exit Realty is one of the more recent businesses to set up shop in the heart of Westport in May 2020. Delta is also seeing reinvestment in its commercial spaces along the Jubilee block.

Ann Weir, Economic Development Manager for the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville, took the time to encourage the business owners on the call to take advantage of the business supports available, including applying for the Ontario Small Business Support Grant. Weir also stated that “the buy local factor is stronger than it has ever been.”

She feels things are moving in the right direction with the province allowing small businesses in the area to reopen based on a percentage of capacity rather than continuing to remain closed.

The business meeting closed with an acknowledgement that no one has a crystal ball to know where things will go from here regarding both the pandemic and the local housing market. However, opportunities such as this meeting provide area entrepreneurs with a chance to ask questions, learn from other professionals and help each other continue to move forward.

The next meeting will be held on March 16 at 7 pm.

New minister in town The Athens United Church congregation is excited to have a new minister.

Rev. Terrie Chedore grew up in Campbellton, New Brunswick and spent her teen years in Halifax/Dartmouth.

She and her husband Bill have lived in Iroquois since 2011. Chedore is a Diaconal minister with extensive training in education, social justice and pastoral care. She enjoys gardening, reading, and renovating and is also a visual artist working mainly in pastels and acrylics. “By creating artwork that is focused on scripture, ritual and faith, I continually learn new things about myself, the congregation, and our collective faith as people of God,” she relates. Newly launched Community Enrichment Committee of Athens aspires to be transformative

The newly created logo for the Community Enrichment Committee of Athens, or CECA.

By Sally Smid Last year there was quite a stir in our communities about diversity and inclusion and recently an initiative has moved forward to develop a group that would strive to help promote an “enriched sense of community in Athens”.

Organizer Dawson Lemaire proposes that the village could be transformed. He remarks, “Athens could become a cultural centre for the region as events, activities, and more initiatives could happen in a safe place for people to interact, with much being aimed towards local youth”. After all, wasn’t Athens, Greece a cultural centre? He believes that there is great potential as the village has a rural charm, rich heritage, historic buildings, caring people, waterfront areas, parks and

more.

The newly launched group has been named the Community Enrichment Committee of Athens (CECA) and invites anyone interested to join the group’s facebook page and post any ideas, photos, or events.

The spinoffs can result in a more interactive and vital community which can help promote inclusion, understanding, as well as tourism and economic development. The group hopes that others will “like” and share the new page. Updates will be posted.

While the pandemic is currently limiting things to a certain extent, much can be shared virtually on this site and innovative planning can take place to help Athens move forward in becoming a more enriched community in a variety of ways!

February episode of Family Feud reveals outcome for local contestants

The suspense and excitement climaxed as area residents could finally view the February 4 episode of Family Feud Canada that featured Toledo’s Nichols family. The show was prerecorded in October and the outcome was a well guarded secret. Many viewers were recalling their beloved sister Evelyn who was a cherished member of the

Athens Family Health Team and who passed away several years ago.

The family of 13 siblings also lost their sister Ann last year. South Crosby School's bus driver, Kathy Leggett was part of the lively team. The five competed for $10,000 and could stay on the show for up to three episodes if they continued winning. The fast paced game was close but in the end the Nichols team was

defeated. “Even though we lost, we had so much fun doing the show,” commented Michelle Jordan. “We all had a FaceTime with everyone that night while watching so we got to enjoy more laughs together.”

The girls jokingly blamed team captain Charles who hesitated with answers.

“We will move on to the next adventure together but always have this to look back on and laugh!”

The joys—and etiquette—of snowmobiling Snowmobiling is a great way to enjoy nature and go on adventures even during a pandemic. Longtime Snowmobile Club member Kent Mainse recalls winter trips to the top of Blue Mountain and cooking lunch over an open fire.

“Nothing tastes better than enjoying such a meal together outside,” he recalls. While snowmobiles are permitted

in the village of Athens, there is concern that some operators can be careless and inconsiderate. Littering is also an issue at times. Athens CAO Darlene Noonan remarks, “I believe most club members adhere to the rules. It is the random day trippers perhaps, not abiding by the rules or being discourteous.” Driving into farmers’ wheat fields

can cause major crop damage. The trails are groomed and marked with warnings to protect fields. It is the co-operation of local farmers that helps to keep trails open for those who enjoy this popular winter past time! 13th Annual Lyndhurst Ice Fishing Derby Wing’s Live Bait & Tackle hosted their 13th Annual Lyndhurst Ice Fishing Derby this past weekend. There were 200 tickets sold to participants who took part in the event, spread over two days this year to help keep limits on group sizes. Those fishing the nearby lakes brought their fish in to be weighed and measured in the hopes of winning. John Sideris and Ruth Howard, owners of the popular hunting and fishing supply store, fondly referred to as Wing’s, made sure no one left empty-handed. There were prizes of all shapes and sizes to choose from for everyone who participated. Chasing his rodeo dreams

By Mallory Day Since the young age of three, all Athens native Emerson Moulton has wanted to do is compete in rodeos. The 27 year old said his love for the sport first started when he watched a movie called “8 Seconds” at his grandparents’ house.

“That’s all I ever wanted to do since then,” exclaimed Moulton. “My aunt had bought the movie and was watching it there and that’s what started this whole thing.”

Although his love for the sport started at a young age, Moulton only started to pursue his passion at 22 years of age. He noted that he would play hockey and then rodeo afterwards.

“I started at a rodeo school first before going to an actual rodeo,” he stated. “The first rodeo I competed in was the Spencerville rodeo in 2016.”

Despite how dangerous it can be, Moulton mentioned he competes in bull riding mainly because it’s

his favourite and the event he’s been most successful in. But as a favour to his friend’s rodeo company, Moulton started riding saddle broncs last year.

“I actually had a lot of fun and will continue riding broncs,” he exclaimed. “I have also been working towards team roping as well.”

With there not being a lot of rodeos within the area, Moulton sometimes has to travel far just to be able to compete. Because he’s been to so many, he said he thinks the furthest he’s had to travel was to Salem, Virginia. But out of all the rodeos he’s been to, he said his favourite was in St. Tite, Quebec.

“That place is unexplainable,” he exclaimed.

“It’s the second biggest rodeo in Canada and it’s just unbelievable.”

When Moulton isn’t competing, he likes to

spend his time at home where he currently resides in Russell, Ontario.

“We have a lot of rodeo cattle where I am living, there is always something happening after chores are done,” he mentioned.

“Whether it’s steer wrestling, roping or bucking bulls, we never stop doing rodeo things, really.”

Moulton said his future goals are to make the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA) finals in Guthrie, Oklahoma and to make the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) finals in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Out of all the rodeos and awards Moulton has received, he said the biggest one was in 2016 when he won the Rams final and the year-end rodeo. Moulton said he can’t wait until he’s able to saddle up for another rodeo.

Celebrate Dr. Dodie Elkins’ 20th year in practice It’s time to celebrate! I have been practicing 20 years in our community and it is because of you! Thank you, Thank you, Thank you.

Some of you may not know my story on why I choose to be a chiropractor and how I got to Seeley’s Bay. I wanted to be a chiropractor since I was in grade seven. My mom worked as a chiropractic assistant for Dr. Marlene Turner in Milton Ontario, and I shadowed our chiropractor for a day. By the time I left the office, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Young and full of determination, nothing and nobody was going to get in my way.

I received my Bachelor of Science from the University of Guelph in 1996 and received my Doctor of Chiropractic from National University of Health Sciences in 2000, married my grade-school sweetheart, Mark and we planted our roots in Gananoque because of my fond memories as a kid coming to my aunt and uncle’s cottage on the St. Lawrence river. I am very thankful for Dr. Tim Ford who gave me the opportunity to practice as an associate in Gananoque, Seeleys Bay and Athens. In 2004 we were blessed with our daughter Sarah, and I purchased two satellite practices in Seeley’s Bay and Athens. Two years later, we welcomed our son, Thomas. Life was really getting busy as a mom and chiropractor. I made a decision to only work in one location and I sold the Athens practice to Dr. Lindsey Bourque to gain a greater work/life balance.

During the last 20 years the communities of Seeley’s Bay, Athens and Gananoque have been like family to me. Supporting me through growing of my own family, and some of the personal challenges I faced. I have been blessed to experience the most joyful moments with practice members from taking their first step, personal successes in sports and activities, graduations, acceptance into universities, weddings, pregnancies and growing families, job advancements buying their first homes and so much more. I also have shared their sadness and grief as we have celebrated the lives of many special people of our community who have transitioned.

The Lockyer Family came in 2nd with their Red Canoe entry which recalls memories of the annual Red Canoe Festival. The family entered their creation into the Canadian Canoe Museum’s contest as well.

One of the many wonderful things about our community is it’s big heart, volunteer organization and many events that keep our community together.

I have such wonderful memories of community events like Frostfest, Turkey Fair, Red Canoefest, July 1st Celebrations, 4-H Events, car shows, fishing derbies and the Lyndhurst Santa Parade to name a few.

The Seeley’s Bay Frost Fest Committee didn’t just stand around wringing their hands when their 27th annual event was cancelled. Their creative spirit resulted in a “Virtual Frost Fest” which helped energize area residents at a time of new COVID lockdown measures.

Daniel receives gift of transplant on his birthday When you are a victim of kidney failure, what could be a better birthday gift than a new kidney? When Sara McLean got the news that a kidney was available for her son Daniel, she quickly packed him in the car and drove to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. It was bittersweet, knowing that another family had lost a loved one. As it turned out, Daniel received the transplant on his 6th birthday!

The doctors were very impressed with the success of the surgery and he was eventually transferred to CHEO in Ottawa. This eliminates trips to Ottawa for dialysis 3 times a week! When Monica Zakss was eight years old she was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome or pre-leukemia and this has been quite a challenge for her and her family. She is now 11 and she is still having treatments and ended up having her appendix removed recently, further complicating her situation. Her grandmother Nancy Sauve applied to “Make-A-Wish” a while ago, asking if it would be possible for her to be able to go to Disneyland.

Unfortunately, due to COVID that could not be possible. On February 11 she was surprised at the Sauve home near Addison, with the arrival of a camping trailer, blankets, lights, a bluetooth speaker and, being a horse lover, a large collection of toy horses. Sauve remarked “Monica was overwhelmed with the reveal and gifts.
