Mallorytown station opening BY SALLY SMID There was probably no better way to experience Canada’s 150th Birthday in Mallorytown than to celebrate with the Grand Opening of the Mallorytown Station on the afternoon of July 2nd. The site has been revitalized for use as a local museum, archives and meeting place. The sun shone for the first time in a while as Mayor Roger Haley welcomed the many dignitaries and
guests in attendance. He explained that the project was inspired by a suggestion from First Impression visitors from Sharbot Lake who noted that washrooms and a tourism kiosk area were missing from the area. Funds were later secured through Canada 150, Thousand Island C o m m u n i t y Development grants, local donations and area fundraising events. Senator Bob Runciman, a local part time resident, noted that
the Front of Yonge Township may be small in population numbers but “big in terms of heart” in their commitment to community projects. MP Gord Brown was recognized for his help in acquiring funds and he thanked all for their contributions, noting how positive the project is in drawing tourists in and Tom Russell of TICDC somewhat echoed his remarks. Charleston Lake FX shines BY SALLY SMID Charleston FX Canada Day celebration has become quite a high energy event and this year it was especially so with the Canada’s 150 observance. The committee works hard all year to make the event possible. Generous donations and a 50/50 draw help to raise funds needed to host the day. Derek Slack was the lucky winner of the $3,130 prize. The day kicked off with a Poker Boat Run
which was won by Derek Workman. Pontoon boats were made available at no charge for those without a boat. At 6:00 there was lots more family fun offered in the main dock area of Charleston Village. The G-Men played live rock and country music and a few couples even took to the “dance floor”. There were lots of refreshments available at bargain prices. Pontoon boat and tractor rides, Sam the Clown,
face painting, yo-yos and glow gifts for kids and another 50/50 draw rounded out the activities. The rain held off for the Canada 150 fireworks display this year which were quite expanded and the exploding colours above Charleston Lake were an amazing sight! The dedicated volunteer team of the Charleston’s FX committee provided an exceptional Canada 150 Celebration event.

Community leader Frank Kinsella honoured in Seeley’s Bay TO THE MURAL Under umbrellas and showers the Seeley’s Bay Area Residents’ Association (SBARA) hosted an event on Canada Day to unveil a plaque in honour of Frank Kinsella. Family and friends celebrated Frank’s many contributions to his
local community as well as his wider public service to the region. Dan Langham, the Chair of SBARA, said that “This plaque will help us to remember Frank’s generous community service – to many causes – in perpetuity. 150 years is a long time to

reflect on the building and development of a country and a community - and it is contributions like Frank's that have made this a place worth living in and a place worth making a contribution to. David Dargie, a long time friend and co-worker of Kinsella, travelled from
Brockville for the occasion and noted how honoured he was to reconnect with friends to honour Frank. Liz Huff, the volunteer co-ordinator of Seeley’s Bay Steps Up, said she was grateful for the chance to thank Frank’s family for the contribu-
tions each of them had made by ‘loaning’ their father, grandfather or husband to tireless community service. “Frank really did ‘dare us to dream’ in Seeley’s Bay and that kind of encouraging servant-leadership makes a big impact”. The Residents’
Association designed and commissioned the plaque and sought permission from the Township of Leeds & 1000 Islands to install it at the Centennial Park, which was a place where Frank and his wife Mary Lou visited regularly to volunteer at community events.
