A Commemorative First Poppy was presented to Comrade Russell Thompson (101 yr old WWII Veteran) by Her Worship, Mayor Smith-Gatcke in Council Chambers at the Municipal Building in Lansdowne on Friday October 30 at 11:00am. Also present is Councillor Gordon Ohlke. This event marks the beginning of the annual Poppy campaign. The Poppy which was presented in an engraved lexan frame was an original drawing by TLTI Grade 12 student Nellwyn Cowan.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 27 Seeleys Bay Area Residents Association is hosting2 their annual Christmas Tree Lighting with a slight twist and ensuring social distancing practices are in place.

The tree has a new location across from the legion. The usual hot cocoa and cookies, bonfire and caroling will be replaced by individually wrapped treats made by Ridgway Confections, sponsored by Dr Dodie Elkins.

SBARA recently purchased an FM transmitter so that people can safely remain in their cars and listen to the speeches and Christmas music on their own radio.

Events begin at 7 pm on the 27th, at which time the tree will be lit and will continue to be a beautiful beacon of light during these cold dark winter nights, from 5-11 each evening. SBARA invites people to come on foot or comfort of their cars and enjoy this safe fun event while practicing social distancing protocols.

Thousand Islands Elementary School student raises $5,000 for classmate’s new wheelchair October 21, 2020 (Lansdowne, ON) – When Grade 4 Thousand Islands Elementary School student Ava Deryaw found out her classmate needed a new wheelchair, she got creative.

Ava’s classmate, Ducky Steacy, has cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair. Ducky needs a new wheelchair that will better fit her growing body. A new wheelchair costs approximately $6,000, and Ava says she realized she could help her friend’s family with the equipment purchase.

“Ducky is a nice and sweet girl and she’s been growing a lot, and they need to buy a new chair,” explains Ava. “It’s a lot of money, so I thought it was a good idea to help raise money.”

Ava, 9, was inspired when she learned Ducky’s support worker was designing and selling face masks to raise money for the chair. Ava made tie-dyed t-shirts with her mom over the provincially mandated COVID-19 school closure period and says she thought it was a good idea to start selling her t-shirt creations as a fundraiser.

Since then, she’s sold more than 170 t-shirts.

“Ava is a very kind girl,” says TIES office administrator Danielle Jean. “It’s inspiring to see kids take that step forward. Ava is amazing and a lot of kids wouldn’t think to go above and beyond for her friend.”

While Ava succeeded in selling t-shirts,

she took her fundraising idea to another level. Writing a letter to the Gananoque Lions Club seeking financial support for Ducky’s chair, Ava eventually got on a Zoom conference call with the service club’s members.

“They said they would donate money and buy some shirts, too. Later on, we met up at the park and they came with a huge cheque that had $1,000 written on it,” Ava explains.

The Lions Club’s donation combined with Ava’s t-shirt sales brings the total to more than $5,000.

TIES Principal Nancy Holman says Ava’s initiative speaks to the school’s community spirit.

“We’re a community school that cares about every single child. It starts at the students and goes all the way to our staff.

They’re constantly looking for ways to make our school a better place,” says Holman. “What this shows me is inclusion of all learners bring so much value to everybody. It’s inspiring what Ava has been able to do, and Ducky inspires us to do better every day.”

Ava says she was simply happy to help her friend.

“Ducky is funny, and she always makes us laugh,” says Ava. “Doing this makes me feel like a better friend and makes me feel happy.”

Bestselling author and long-time Seeley’s Bay resident James Raffan celebrated the recent launch of his new book Ice Walker: A Polar Bear’s Journey Through the Fragile Arctic. James, explorer extraordinaire, took a walk on the wild side and went live with his virtual launch with viewers tuning in from across the country.

Though there were some issues, as can be expected with our unstable rural internet, James persisted as true adventurers do.

James provided us with a look into some of the creative and scientific backstory that led him to this masterpiece that connects us to the majestic polar bear, Nanu. A natural storyteller, James speaks with compassion that comes from deep within, compelling us to want to learn more.

Ice Walker, published

by Simon & Schuster, is now available locally at Beggars Banquet Books in Gananoque and I, for one, look forward to being introduced to the North as I journey through the chapters. It promises to be an awakening experience, witnessing our world through the eyes of a polar bear. James’ hope is for us to “ponder what we are doing to the earth, what we are doing to the bears, what we are doing to ourselves, and what might be done about all of that.”

Delta author Coralee Boileau also has reason to celebrate as the first anniversary of her debut novel, Falling From Grace, approaches. “It is a dream come true,” commented Coralee as she reflected on having her book published.

Coralee is the first Canadian author published by Blydyn Square Books in New Jersey.

Falling From Grace is a fictional story set in small-town Ontario, with inspiration from the local village of Plum Hollow and others in and around Rideau Lakes.

The story centres around a “grief-stricken child’s search for her words and her foster mother’s search for the truth.”

Without giving too much away, Coralee says she is hopeful that her book will help people become more empathetic and understanding of others, and less judgemental. Falling From Grace is available to order through amazon.ca.

The Delta Agricultural Society is selling Red Ribbon Recipes in honour of what was to be the 190th year of the Delta Fair, and Friends & Neighbours Get Cooking has been produced by Forfar Community Hall.

Brockville General Hospital’s new Donald B. Green Tower S tory & S ally S mid

The installed Main Entrance sign at the Brockville General Hospital is no longer a mystery!

The new addition has opened and the noise and inconvenience which has affected residents, patients, visitors and staff for over one and a half years has come to an end.

In August, BGH’s President and CEO Nick Vlacholias “received the keys” to the hospital’s new Donald B. Green Tower, named in honour of the prominent local philanthropist. For years the Don and Shirley Green Family has been generous supporters of BGH and donated $2 million to the hospital’s redevelopment plan.

The Greens have local connections. They were originally part of Shirley’s father, Harrison Russell’s United Maple Products Co. in Delta. Shirley was an Athens District High School graduate and was named to the school’s Hall of Distinction.

This state of the art, 175,000 square foot addition is declared to be on budget with a total cost of $180 million dollars and is the largest infrastructure investment in Brockville’s history. The tower includes 29 mental health beds, 32 complex continuing and palliative care beds and 32 inpatient rehabilitation and integrated stroke unit beds. That’s a net increase of 22 beds, 80% being single rooms.

“This is a reflection of our dedication to the

future of BGH and the health care community,” said Vlacholias.

“Throughout the tower there are outdoor spaces but there is also a lot of natural light coming in,” he said.

“There is evidence that having outdoor access actually promotes mental and physical healing,” BGH spokesperson Abby McIntyre noted. She went on to explain that the terraces and natural décor colours and designs are quite therapeutic in enhancing mental and physical health.

The Tower also provides communal dining rooms, a larger ER Department entrance, and an expanded physiotherapy gym.

Improved accessibility recognizes the needs of our aging population.

Many rooms include lifts, mobile work stations, day beds for families, lower windows, “smart beds and lights”, hall seating, and more.

“All inpatient programs will be in a single, central, location and it also gives us space to grow and adapt to the needs of our community,” noted Vlacholias.

The Garden Street Site holds many memories and is being returned to the Sisters of Providence who have been leasing that space to BGH. It will move into the new tower on October 24. This continues to be a monumental undertaking, especially during the pandemic.

Vlacholias remarked, “The new five floor tower will have quite an impact on the lives of our community and the great work of our healthcare providers!”

Athens community helps children with health challenges

Junetown area residents are noticing an interesting change on area roadways. Horse and buggy is the mode of transportation for five Amish families, some from Aylmer, Ontario, that have just moved in, with more expected to join them.

“I can say that this is very good news and I’m excited to see the addition of new cultures to our area which can only help add to our appreciation of the diversity we share in this country,” commented Front of Yonge Mayor Roger Haley.

It is hoped that area drivers pay special attention to speed limits and use caution on roads, especially with the recent news of two young boys who lost their lives in a buggy accident in Bruce County.

Their plans vary and include being involved in woodworking, construction and some farming. They currently conduct their church and school in their homes. One neighbour expressed her admiration noting “their hard work, parenting skills, strong families and desire to live off

the land”.

Local trips are made by horse and buggy, but they do hire motorized vehicles for longer journeys. They make use of Hydro, appliances and wireless phones. In this fast paced era, some may envy their simpler lifestyle with no TV nor computers.

Such things, they believe, would detract from their spiritual life.

Amish member Marvin Gascho explained that they don’t want to portray themselves as being superior.

“We take the Bible literally. We want to stand true to the Word of God.” Mark Miller commented that many think of them as “those quaint Amish in their horse and buggies”. This is not how they want to be thought of.

“We are here to portray Christ and His Kingdom here on earth and to live out His teachings.” Everyone is welcome to attend their church meetings and they look forward to perhaps being involved in prison ministry, visiting in senior homes and more.

There is no doubt that our new Amish neighbours give us much to consider and have added a new dimension to our community!

Athens Council update

By Sally Smid The Athens Council continues to face many challenges, especially in the face of COVID. After much preparation, the Arena opened on October 5.

There is much in place to keep the staff and participants safe and everyone’s patience and cooperation is appreciated. Arena rentals are $14,000 less than at this time last year.

Council asked everyone to be safe on Halloween and to respect those choosing not to participate.

This year’s Parade of Lights has been canceled. Athens will

be promoting “light up the town” as an alternative and encourages residents to do extra decorating.

Remembrance Day is moving to Centennial Park to provide more social distancing room and the reception is canceled.

Council is working with the OPP to identify the young offenders who appear on surveillance cameras doing damage at Centennial Park.

2021 policing cost projections are $432,008, a $17, 588 reduction.

Council is entertaining a proposal and moving forward with the sale of the Athens Aeros

Junior Hockey Team. Details are being determined, but this should not affect team operations. A public meeting will take place. “This will not minimize the wonderful years of past and current volunteers who have kept this team afloat,” noted CAO Darlene Noonan.

The Fire Department was granted funds of about $127,000 from the modernization grant to update the SCBA bottles.

COVID has complicated Council’s plans for the year, but they continue to proceed as best they can during this complex time. The next meeting is scheduled for November 9.

By Tanya Hammond What do you do when you have had your wings clipped due to the global pandemic? While your travel plans may have been grounded, allow local opportunities to entertain and to pamper yourself to take flight…

Sun seekers rejoice! and treat yourself to a regular spa day throughout the winter months. Book a hot stone massage or a luxury facial and feel invigorated. A “salt cave” or “salt spa” visit will do wonders for those missing the salty south shores.

Hit up your local pharmacy and purchase yourself a handy foot spa so you can relax your aching feet at home. Maybe read a good book while soaking your feet. It might not be the oceanside winter vacation you planned, but your feet will be ready for sandals when spring rolls

around.

I am told that Vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin) is another wise purchase to make this winter to add to your health and wellness regimen. (Be sure to ask your family doctor or naturopath for their recommendations before taking any supplements.)

Perhaps rent a cabin locally for a week(end) and enjoy a mini vacation without all the travel fuss. Chances are a cozy fireside retreat will leave you loving our Canadian winter.

While gathering together to play golf down south this winter won’t be happening, you can take up a new exercise inspired hobby like snowshoeing, cross country skiing, tai chi or chair yoga to help keep you in shape.

If you are looking for a slower-paced hobby, bird watching is an enjoy-

able pastime. You might even find yourself bonding with your feathered friends who also remain here and don’t fly south for the winter.

A light therapy lamp can also be a helpful item to have on hand for those missing the sunny south.

Last but not least, don’t let yourself become socially isolated. You still need to socialize, which can take many forms these days, such as learning to host a zoom meeting with your book club, using Facetime to see your grandkids or picking up the phone to call an old friend.

There are small local groups who are quilting, painting, and creating while still practising recommended safety measures and wearing masks, of course, so don’t let your lack of winter travel plans stop you from enjoying life here at home!

The ceiling has been deteriorating and earlier this year a plan was formulated for a heritage conservation solution to secure the ceiling with Plexiglas.“We are very thankful to Art Shaw who was instrumental in saving the 210 year old accordion lath ceiling on the third floor of the Old Stone Mill,” remarked Ken Watson of the Delta Mill Society who was part of the undertaking. “It was Art who provided us with the carpentry details for properly installing the Plexiglas.” This work has helped save the heritage ceiling of the mill which was built in 1810 and is one of oldest surviving grist mills of Upper Canada. This project will keep the ceiling intact and also allow visitors to see its detail for years to come.

Remembrance Day 2020

By Sally Smid The first Remembrance Day in Canada took place on November 11, 1931. On this date each year, Canadians pause in a moment of silence to pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve our country in times of war, conflict and peace. This year, like many aspects of our lives due to the pandemic, Remembrance Day will be different. The poppy boxes will be unmanned however your poppy purchases and donations in support of our veterans will be greatly appreciated.

Donations can also be made online. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. Ceremonies and services to mark this significant milestone have been scaled back to adhere to COVID regulations.

Check with your local municipality for directives and plan to participate in whatever way possible. The Athens Museum has placed a display in the window of “the Stedman’s” building. Support the work of your local legion in whatever way possible. Wear a poppy! Lest We Forget!

2020 Remembrance Day Services Athens Remembrance Day Township of Athens Council have made the very difficult decision that the annual Remembrance Day Service at Memorial Park will not be able to proceed this year. However, we encourage throughout the day to please take time to attend the cenotaph and pay respect, lay a wreath as you normally would, or watch virtual services which will be televised from larger venues. This year being the 75th anniversary of the end of the second world war, it

is especially important to pay homage to our veterans more than ever for their sacrifices.

The Athens Heritage Museum has a special Remembrance Display in the window of the former Stedman’s store. We invite residents to view the exhibit while distancing.

The Museum’s tribute to veterans is also available on Saturday mornings, with COVID restrictions.

Lansdowne Remembrance Day Ceremony Wednesday, November 11, 11:00 -11:30 AM

Because of COVID-19 Health concerns the Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Lansdowne Veterans Memorial will not be a public event. Wreaths will be pre-laid. An autumn drive through our countryside reveals grazing cows, horses, and sheep along with fields of corn, soybean and wheat.

This bounty is made possible through the work of dedicated local farmers who are often up before dawn, working more than 40 hours a week.

At harvest time we traditionally “give thanks”, but this is also the time of year when farmers have the most stress due to machinery breakdowns, un-

cooperative weather conditions and market prices.

Athens cattle farmer Kim Sytsma related that many farming issues involve feed shortages, animal rights protesters, lack of meat processors, the increase in farm property taxes, hydro and fuel costs, and the carbon tax.

Of course coyotes, raccoons, and scavenging birds also cause damage and loss. Then there is always the challenge of meeting government regulations.

The pandemic has introduced yet more un-

certainty to the farming profession. Supply chains were disrupted, foreign labour was compromised, and product backlogs became serious. While some subsidies were given, smaller farms lost the option of farmers’ markets and were forced to go online.

There is good news, though, as this year’s harvest seems quite bountiful. Leeds Federation of Agriculture is involved in a food bank project and there is the possibility of mobile meat processing for private use.

While farming is a rewarding life in many ways, the public does not always realize what goes on to help put food on our tables. However, local residents are realizing the importance of purchasing locally grown food.

Agriculture Week was October 5 to 11, followed

by Agricultural Mental Health Week. Leeds and the Thousand Islands counted 182 farms, involving 275 farmers, just in their township.

Thank you farmers for all you do, especially in these challenging times!

By Tanya Hammond Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, was in Lansdowne recently to make an announcement on behalf of the Honourable Ernie Hardeman, Ontario’s Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

Leeds and the Thousand Islands is one of four municipalities who will be receiving support through Ontario’s Rural Economic Development program to fund economic projects throughout the region.

During Agriculture week, the announcement came at a very appropriate time, noted Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands Mayor, Corrina Smith-Gatcke. The $30,886 received will go towards a $75,022 “Popup Farmer’s Market” project planned in collaboration with the Front of

Yonge township.

Unfortunately, Kim Goodman, Manager of Community and Business Services for TLTI, who has been an integral part of the project planning, couldn’t attend the announcement. However, Mrs. Goodman, who is understandably excited about the project, later summarized the plan “to move the market (the pop-up farmer’s market) across the joint municipalities and tie it to existing events. This should allow for a built-in audience, increase marketing for both the community event as well as the market as a whole.“ Though the application for the funding was submitted before COVID, Mrs. Goodman states, “It is an opportunity to build a program that will respond to changing regulations, restrictions and markets. And over the

course of the next two years, we intend to find a Market program that is sustainable, adaptable, and increases capacity among food producers to get their wares to small farmer’s markets.”

The township representatives expressed their gratitude for the support for agricultural initiatives such as this and further connecting farm to fork. MPP Clark, always a strong advocate for our rural communities, made a similar stop in Rideau Lakes where he announced funding to go towards marketing efforts in that township.

In a recent press release, Rideau Lakes Mayor Arie Hoogenboom stated that “Rideau Lakes Township greatly appreciates the RED grant as it allows us to market and promote our villages, waterways and rural attributes to the broader region.”

Kingston Symphony wows on YouTube

Kingston Symphony struck all the right chords while beginning their 2020-21 season on October 25 by live-streaming a talented string quartet featuring local cellist Jill Vitols, violist Kelvin Enns, and violinists Erika Sloos and Julia McFarlane. The artists performed music

by Mozart, Borodin, Webern and Harrison with the precision and mastery one would expect. The performance at the Isabel Bader Hall was stellar, with crisp and clear audio and video broadcast around the globe. The talented quartet allowed stories to come to life as they drew their bows across the strings. For the finale, the four performed an uplifting piece, Here Comes The Sun, originating from the Beatles. It is wonderful that during a pan-

Tracy Jordan was awarded the job of the new administrator at Maple View Lodge last April and in October she was awarded by the Donna Rubin Administrator Leadership Program, recognizing an AdvantAge Ontario member student who “achieved the highest case study mark in each of the fall and winter sessions of the Association’s program. Rubin launched the program in 1996 and was the Association’s CEO for over 26 years. AdvantAge Ontario represents not-for-profit providers of long term care services and housing for seniors. ATHENS FOOD BANK CHRISTMAS UPDATE 2020

Once again the Food Bank executive wishes to thank all those folks who have gotten us through to the Christmas Season of 2020. You have been wonderful!

Everything is very different this year and most schools are not doing food collections. /We shall miss their donations. With no parades and locations such as the Medical Center, and Physio Building and other locations not being open, we shall miss their donations as well.

Should you wish to donate any food items, the Food Bank is open on Mondays until the end of November from 9 until 12. There are drop off spots at The Village Store as well as Food Market.

Should anyone be inclined to make a monetary donation, a cheque may be sent to Athens Food Bank, Box 115, Athens, ON, or an e transfer sent to athensfoodbank@gmail.com.

Our Christmas hamper program from the Athens Food Bank will continue this year as usual as we help the needy to have a better Christmas.

Anyone other than a regular client in need of assistance should call Bernice at 613 924 9112 to register for a Hamper. You will need to give your name, address, phone number and children’s names and ages. You may not register for someone else.

Gifts will be given out to children 16 years and under.

Hampers will be ready to pick up on Friday, December 11 between 9 and 11 am at the Athens Free Methodist Church.

Due to COVID-19 the pick up will be a little different this year in that no one will be allowed to enter the building. Please drive under the awning at the front door and await instructions. You will need to have your assigned number ready on a piece of paper to give to a volunteer outside the FRONT door. Your hamper will be then brought out for you. Groundbreaking ceremony held for Fire Station 3

By Sally Smid A Fire Service Review confirmed that the Elizabeth-Kitley Fire Station in Frankville was in need of replacement due to issues with the building’s structure, insulation, accessibility and dimensions as the department’s fleet of vehicles is increasing.

It was determined that the new station should be further north on County Road 29 to better serve the community. Last year Garnet and Lorna Baker made an offer to the Township to donate six acres of land on Baker Road, about 500 feet west of County Road 29 in Toledo. The Township purchased an additional three acres to create a single lot to meet current and future needs.

There were also discussions about this property being the possible site of a needed ambulance bay for this area. Athens’ Mayor Herb Scott of the Counties, a longtime advocate for a closer location due to such long response time in rural areas, confirmed that this would not be the case, but a report is

forthcoming about possible proposals.

A Request for Proposal was issued last January, for a Building Design and Engineering requirements. DDDG Engineering Services was awarded the contract and a building design of 8,826 square feet was finalized in August. A Tender for Pre-Builder Qualifications and costs closed in mid-October with Bourgon Construction of Cornwall/Kingston, who recently completed the fire stations in Maitland and Prescott, being awarded the contract. The building time schedule is in draft with a tentative completion date of July 2021.

“It has been a long time in coming but it is finally going to happen,” commented Councillor Rob Smith. After turning over the first shovel of dirt during the October 29 groundbreaking ceremony, Mayor Brant Burrow addressed the small group assembled. “We are thrilled to have the support of the Baker family.

This new building will be of benefit to the community for years to come!”

A group of family and friends spread out along the street in front of the Public Works Garage in Mallorytown for a ceremony in memory of one of their own, William J. (Bill) Patterson, former Public Works Superintendent for the Front of Yonge Township.

Lisa Marston, CEO of Front of Yonge Public Library, commented that the rain pouring down that day “seemed to be fitting

as though the world was weeping at the loss of such a great man.”

Mayor Roger Haley gave a heartfelt speech praising Bill’s devotion to the township. “Bill gave his heart and soul to Front of Yonge Township for 35 years. The Public Works Garage was his second home. He is deeply missed,” said Mayor Haley as he unveiled the sign overhead.

After the event, Bill’s sister Bobbie Jean had the following message to share: “Bill’s family

would like to thank the township and council for dedicating the beautiful sign in memory of Bill and to Heather Mooney for creating it. Bill touched the lives of many and is sorely missed.”

The building’s renaming is a sincere tribute to a man missed by his colleagues and his widow Glenna, his kids, grandkids and brothers and sister. The sign will serve as a reminder for generations to come, of the difference Bill made in his community.

Popular Elgin restaurant owners Spiros and Athina Antonakos recently retired from many years of operating the Rideau Restaurant & Pizzeria. The Rideau Fire Department had a special drive-by to celebrate their retirement. They are thankful for years of support and they will be missed. Fundraisers are challenging these days, but the Athens Lions Club strives to move forward. Celebrating local libraries On a recent visit, in celebration of Ontario Library Month, Township of Leeds and The Thousand Islands Mayor Corinna Smith-Gatcke presented a scroll and an autographed copy of James Raffan’s new book Ice Walker to Leeds and Thousand Islands Public Library Board members Brenda Lolley, Board Chair (centre), Gordon Ohlke and Mark Jamison, also Ward 2 Councillors (left), Head Librarian and Chief Executive Officer Tara Mendez (back) and Pierre Mercier (right). In a brief speech the Mayor recognized all the board members, staff, and volunteers’ dedicated work in making the library a vibrant community hub. Acknowledging teachers and bus drivers

By Sally Smid Our local schools continue to face many complications due to the pandemic.

Teachers juggle the tasks of educating and of observing COVID protocol. Many students are taking part in remote learning. For these reasons, World Teacher Appreciation Day (October 5) was especially meaningful.

One local teacher was singled out for his accomplishments. Mr Dion Running of South Crosby Public School received an Innovation Award from the Upper Canada District School Board. He is described as “an exceptional educator with a passion for environmental causes as well as being an Indigenous education leader”.

His experiential learning project connecting students to nature, especially in relation to the study of bats, and his bird box building

initiative earned him the award.

This year has seen a shortage of staff due to the pandemic, and some retired teachers have returned to the classroom. One of those teachers is Diann Johnson who retired last year after many years of teaching.

Bus Driver Appreciation Day was also celebrated in October. These dedicated drivers shoulder more than just the responsibility of driving students to and from school safely; this year they have to respect COVID protocol and adhere to complicated scheduling. A spokesperson commented, “We commend our bus drivers for their grace and commitment toward the new challenges you have been given while working in a global pandemic”.

Despite the many challenges, our local schools seem to have remained COVID free thus far.

Centennial Road Church

Centennial Road Church in Lyn has lots to celebrate! On October 3 their new pastor, Jason Frizzell was installed and his family was welcomed to the community.

Former pastor Dr. Eric Hallett, now District Superintendent of the Central Canada District of the Wesleyan Church was part of the service and received a plaque for his 11 years of service to the church.

Rev. Laurence Croswell received a gold medal for his 50 years of service. “I am thankful to have the opportunity to serve in this role of Lead Pastor, following in the footsteps of two amazingly faithful…leaders who support and celebrate what continues to happen today and what we are preparing for in the future,” commented Pastor Frizzell.

The church continues in its outreach with distanced, online, broad-

casted services and children’s activities which are especially appreciated during the pandemic.

On Halloween, Centennial Road Church was the site of Trunk-or-Treat once again. It was a drive through event where families could gather treat bags from the safety of their vehicles. “This performance experience celebrates hope, family fun and community even in the most challenging of times,” an organizer explained.

COVID may have put a bit of a damper on trick-or-treating this year but this didn’t stop the Kavanaughs on Wiltse St who create quite the Halloween display every year. This year’s addition of a candy chute ensured safe distancing while doling out the goodies. Others have found creative ways to celebrate too. Seeley’s Bay Lions Club hosted an online Halloween contest with a variety of categories and cash prizes. Winners were posted on the Club’s facebook page. The Thousand Islands Playhouse offered a Reverse Halloween event. A team of costumed volunteers delivered free pre-packaged bags of candy to pre-registered children’s doorsteps across Gananoque and in the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands. An organizer stated, “Our goal is to ensure that every child can participate in trick-or-treating activities, even if going door to door is not possible for them this year”. Keeping active this winter - outdoors!

By Sally Smid The coming winter brings with it the realization that more indoor time may not be COVID safe, while being outside for fresh air and exercise is good for our physical and mental health.

Kids seem to naturally enjoy more outdoor time, with sledding, and snowman and fort building being popular winter pastimes.

The rinks are opening with COVID protocol in place, and skating and hockey will take place with some necessary adjustments. North Augusta is completing construction of their outdoor rink. Skating on frozen ponds and waterways offers plenty of family fun with proper ice safety rules. There is also a variety of cross country and snowshoeing trails in the area.

The Triangle Cross Country Ski Club has been preparing their trails off of Leeds Rd. 5 South, near MacIntosh Mills, with the Trailhead at 114 Marsh Lane. The area includes 35 kms of picturesque trails, with 17 being groomed,

and suitable for all levels of skiers. Day users are welcome.

Many cyclists are using “fat bikes” which can be on the trails in all seasons. There is also a 6 km snowshoe trail at Macintosh Mills which includes beautiful scenery that is part of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere. A 5 km gentle trail for members only is at Cedar Valley Country Club on Highway 29 at Forthton.

Curling is taking place at Chaffey’s Locks in the Loonie Curling Club which is a great winter activity for all ages. For those interested in learning or playing, contact dlbest72@hotmail. com or call 613-359-5047.

The club can also arrange rentals.

Of course the snowmobilers are looking forward again to lots of snow and they are working on their trails. The Athens Snowmobile Club is celebrating their 45th year and is continuing with Wing Night take-out fundraisers with proper COVID restrictions.

There are lots of ways to stay active as we embrace winter in Canada!

This was very welcomed by local residents who were missing the usual family dinners, especially those who could not cook such a meal themselves.

Delivery was available. This was not out of character for community minded Mrs. Wykes who for many years has had free homemade cookies available for students walking home from school.
