State Senate approves bill to educate drivers on motorcycle safety

The state Senate has passed a bill that Sen. Patty Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, says “would bolster the safety for motorcyclists in an effort to help prevent crashes that have claimed more than 1,600 lives in the past decade.” Under the measure, a motorcycle safety and awareness component would be added to the current five-hour pre-licensing class for new drivers. In addition, new motorcycle safety questions would be added to the current written driver’s exam, Ritchie said. “Whether you’re a new driver or you’ve been behind the wheel for years, it’s so important to be vigilant of those around you, especially when we are sharing our roadways with motorcycles,” said Ritchie, one of the bill’s co-sponsors. “Requiring new drivers to have this motorcycle safety training will not only protect cyclists, but will also safeguard everyone who hits the open road.” Motorcycles have become increasingly popular throughout the state. Ritchie says she has “called upon state leaders to take necessary steps to increase awareness by drivers of the growing number of cyclists on state highways.” According to New York State Department of Motor Vehicles statics, over the most recent ten-year period, 1,676 lives have been lost from more than 52,000 crashes across New York State. “Experts say that driver inattention is the leading cause of motorcycle fatalities,” Ritchie said. This bill will now be sent to Gov. Andrew Cuomo for his signature. Now this is something that is long over due. This should be done here in Canada,. The licensing system in Canada has not had any significant update in almost 50 years with respect to motorcycle awareness for drivers. Ducati Has Two New Suprises

Ducati Has A New Bike Coming Next Month, And Likely A V4 Superbike This Fall, One Last Hurrah for the 1299 Panigale.

Ducati prides themselves on their sportbikes. Despite venturing into the hipster and adventure worlds (or upright sport touring worlds), it’s sportbikes that have their heart. And yes, that’s a company with a heart. Ducati is set to unveil a new special edition of the 1299 Panigale flagship

sportbike at this year’s World SBK round at Laguna Seca, one they’re calling their last. Like the 1299 Panigale S Anniversario they unveiled on Ducati Island after Race 1 at the WSBK round at Laguna Seca last year, Ducati is set to unveil another new bike, only this time with the tagline “when the end tells the whole story.” But that doesn’t mean Ducati is getting out of the superbike game. In fact, it means just the opposite.

Rumors have been swirling for nearly two years about a production V4 superbike, coming to a head when Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali admitted they were thinking of homologating the 1,000cc V4 from their Desmosedici MotoGP race bike for production use at the press conference for the launch of their 2017 MotoGP team, stating: “The engine development we have made in MotoGP has been exceptional, we have an engine which is very reliable, continued on PG. 03

Ducati Has Two New Suprises very light, compact and has a lot of interesting technology. We are seriously thinking of introducing it to regular customers as it is a masterpiece of engineering. It must be translated into something that can be sold to customers at a reasonable, even if premium, price. So it will not be an exotic bike like the Desmosedici, but a high-end sports bike. We cannot say when it will happen... but it is getting (see ready PowersPorts.com For details) closer, much closer.” Initially, we thought we were probably looking at a 2019 model, especially after all 2015-2016 all 2015-2016 Ducati Corse Sporting Director Paulo *Vehicle License fee (where applicable) and Motorcycles Motorcycles Ciabatti made a comment that WSBK HSTthe are extra. The longer I ride the more I find myself wondering what it is that has driven others to take to two wheels. Fortunately, I do ride and when I stop for a refreshment, there seems to be an abundance of people who like to chat about motorcycles. I find that the people most forthcoming, at least to me, are people in my relative age bracket. There seems to be a mix of those who used to ride and those who have dreamed of riding but they all seem to a have the same quality; enthusiasm is in their eyes even before they start talking about motorcycles. One of the fellows who has stood out in my mind was an older gent, easily in his mid to late 70’s who happened to see my bike parked while I was enjoying a much anticipated coffee. He walked around my bike which at the time was basically stock and I could see the wheels turning in his head, after about his third time circling the bike he stopped and commented how beautiful he thought the bike was. He then proceeded to tell me about his long love affair with motorcycles. As a boy, he would get excited to occasionally see one of these 2-wheeled machines roaring past him along the gravel side roads where he lived, the riders scarves waving like banners in the wind and hearing the putt putt putt of its motor. What he would have given to have one, but in his words, he

was just a lad, too young for such machinery. As he got older, he met his future wife and had a family. Again he recollected about all the beautiful machines he would see from time to time and how he wished he would someday have one of his own but at the time, his children were young and his wife would never have approved. We continued chatting for some time about todays motorcycles and his questions to me were endless. I quickly realized that his questions were not so much about the bike, his interest was how it made me feel? What I had experienced, what I had seen and where I had travelled. I told him that growing up, cars were the fascination for me, but somewhere along the way the motorcycling bug finally caught up to me and hard. I went on to explain that I started late in life getting my motorcycle license and buying a bike to fullfill my dream. It was clear that he too had been bitten and I assumed that he finally did get his ride, but it was a dream he was never able to achieve. By now, my coffee was finished and our conversation was came to an end. I put on my helmet, shook his hand and wished him well. As I rode away I caught a glimpse of him in my mirror standing where we talked watching me ride away. It’s interesting to know what the catalyst

The Bite

was for each fellow rider I meet while riding. Some time ago, while working for another motorcycle publication, I met a woman who was at the time very new to riding. She was not only an inspiration to me but also to most of the people she met while riding. At the time, married with two grown children, she found herself with time on her hands and not knowing what to do with it. Aside from those chores we all seem to be chained to, her free time became unsatisfying. Inspired by other females she saw riding, she decided to give it a go. She ended up getting her license, passing the safety course, then packed her bags, threw her leg over her new ride and with little to no plans she headed west on what would become an adventure of a lifetime, all by herself. Crossing the Rockies and ending up in Vancouver. She had fulfilled a dream she never thought was even possible for her. I think of them often when I ride, especially when I ride alone and all I hear is the putt putt putt of my engine and the wind whistling past my ears. The time spent chatting to people I have met while out on rides makes me realize how short life really is and just how important it is to allow ourselves to at the very least, try new experiences or things we think we have some passion for. You know the bucket list you have, pick one thing today, and JUST DO IT!

Harley-Davidson Considering A US Trade Rep Bid to Buy Ducati won’t remove motorcycles from tariff negotiations U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer told a congressional committee Thursday that while he is “sympathetic” to American motorcyclists, dealerships and others, he cannot remove small-displacement European motorcycles from a proposed import tariff while negotiations continue in a dispute with the European Union over U.S. beef imports. “We need action, not sympathy,” said Rob Dingman, president and CEO of the American Motorcyclist Association,in a press statement. “He has chosen the U.S. beef industry over American motorcyclists and Americans who own and operate motorcycle dealerships.” At issue is a proposed 100 percent tariff on 51cc to 500cc motorcycles imported to the United States from European Union manufacturers. The motorcycles are included in a long list of products that would be the subject of tariffs, up to 100 percent, as part of a long-running dispute over U.S. beef imports. A member of Lighthizer’s staff stated in February that motorcycles were placed on the list because officials hoped the outrage of motorcyclists and the motorcycle industry would provide leverage for the U.S. beef industry, AMA noted. “The U.S. Trade Representative is toying with the livelihoods of American families whose businesses haven’t fully recovered from the 2008 Great Recession,” Dingman said. “These dealerships will go under if this tariff is enacted.” Lighthizer said that he had heard from motorcyclists and from the motorcycle industry. “He says he heard us, but he is not listening,” Dingman responded. “The U.S. beef industry doesn’t need this tariff as much as these American motorcycle dealers need to stay in business and their employees need to keep their jobs. “None of the American dealerships, nor any of their employees, has any greater ability than the beef industry to get the European Union to buy more U.S. beef,” Dingman continued. “Yet, the U.S. Trade Representative insists on playing chicken with the livelihoods of motorcycle dealers and the choices of American motorcyclists, while catering to the beef industry.” During the first week after Lighthizer was confirmed by the U.S. Senate, motorcyclists sent nearly 2,500 emails to his office demanding that motorcycles be removed from the tariff proposal. Dingman made the same demand in person at a USTR hearing in February and again in a letter to Lighthizer. The AMA urges more consumers to get involved by sending a message to Congress.

According to a recent Reuters report, HarleyDavidson is considering making a bid to buy rival Ducati. The deal could be worth up to $1.67 billion. Several other groups are also preparing bids for the Italian motorcycle maker, which is being put up for sale by Volkswagen. Harley-Davidson has hired Goldman Sachs to work on the deal, one source said, adding tentative bids were expected in July. Volkswagen, whose Audi division controls Ducati is working with investment boutique Evercore on the sale which will help it fund a strategic overhaul following its emissions scandal. Harley-Davidson, which commands about half the U.S. big-bike market, has seen demand for its motorcycles continue to decline as its

loyal baby boomer demographic ages and competitors such as Indian and Honda offer discounts. Volkswagen’s labor unions, which control half the seats on its supervisory board, are opposed to selling the Italian company. “Ducati is a jewel, the sale of which is not supported by the labor representatives on Volkswagen’s supervisory board,” a spokesman for VW group’s works council said. “Harley-Davidson is miles behind Ducati in technology terms,” he added. In 2016, Ducati delivered 55,451 motorcycles to customers all over the world, an increase of 1.2% compared to 2015. The U.S. is Ducati’s biggest market, with customers receiving a total of 8,787 new bikes in 2016.

Dunlop Introduces New Rear Slick Designed For 600cc Motorcycles

At the Utah Motorsports Campus round of the MotoAmerica series this weekend, Dunlop will introduce a new slick tire size for the Supersport class designed specifically for 600cc racing machines. Dunlop developed this new road-racing slick specifically for the 5.5-inch rim used on 600s, and it offers significantly elevated performance for the class. This 180/60R17 rear tire will be available in soft and medium compounds first in the MotoAmerica series, and will soon be available to club racers across the country. Developed on tracks across the country with top 600-class riders including Garrett Gerloff, JD Beach, Benny Solis and others—and at Dunlop’s Proving Grounds in Huntsville, Alabama—this new tire

provides greater feel at maximum lean, quicker cornering transitions, increased overall grip, and prolonged tire life—a big benefit to club racers. Lap time improvements during testing were at least a second a lap depending on the track. “As the series tire supplier for MotoAmerica, it would be easy for Dunlop to not aggressively pursue new tire designs,” said Mike Buckley, Dunlop Motorcycle’s Vice President of sales and marketing. “But we have continually developed our racing products, and this new tire is a way to provide 600-class riders with tire technology designed specifically for that class, which we hope will provide these riders new opportunities to elevate their own performance and get even better at their craft.”

Harley-Davidson launches video series to Celebrate 100 Years in CANADA

To celebrate a century of doing business in Canada, Harley-Davidson has launched a new video series, called Common Ground. The videos feature three different Canadian riders: Charles-Édouard Carrier, from Quebec; Johanna Poultney, from Alberta; and Daniel Ross, from Nova Scotia. These

riders will take visitors from out of the country on bike trips around their favourite Canadian routes and hangouts, showing them our country from the ground up. Check out the video episodes at http://www.harley-davidson.com/ content/h-d/en_CA/home.html

Riders Talk to Cars Per mile traveled, people on motorbikes are nearly 30 times more likely to die in a crash than people in motorcars. You can attribute that to the fact motorcyclists are, well, on a motorcycle. They lack the seat belts and airbags and crumple zones that have made cars so much safer in recent decades. Short of turning motorcycles into cars, the most logical way technology can minimize injuries and deaths is by keeping bikes and cars out of each other’s way. An Israeli company thinks the vehicleto-vehicle communications technology it developed for larger vehicles can do just that. Autotalks has joined industry supplier Bosch to develop and test a Wi-Fibased communication system that can track vehicles in the vicinity, regardless of whether they’re in view, and alert the rider to an imminent collision, possibly providing enough time to avert a crash. This B2V—that’s bike-to-vehicle—system uses short-range communication technology to exchange location, speed, heading, braking mode, and other information with nearby vehicles sporting similar hardware. The hardware, slated for testing on Ducati motorcycles, is lightweight, compact, and low-power enough to work with two-wheelers, says company cofounder and CTO Onn Haran. “It’s a low-cost solution with a small form factor, which is critical for motorcycles,” Haran says. “It can operate in a wide temperature range and be placed anywhere on the motorcycle.” When the system detects a threat— a vehicle braking suddenly, say, or about to blow through a red light—it alerts the rider with audio or visual cues. It tips the rider only when it thinks a collision is imminent. (The system can be configured to alert larger vehicles to the presence of motorcyclists.) Bosch’s initial research suggests it could prevent one-third of all motorcycle accidents in Germany, where the company is headquartered and will conduct the study. It’s a tantalizing vision with a significant catch: It only works if nearly every vehicle carries the same sort of tech. “There needs to be a government mandate for V2V technology to make that happen,” says Egil Juliussen, director of research and principal automotive technology analyst at IHS Markit. That may be a hard sell among the dozens of nations in the EU, but could happen in the US, where the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is considering a rule requiring all new vehicles carry V2V communications. “Vehicle-to-vehicle technology is very useful and can save a lot of lives,” says Juliussen. “Accident costs of all types account for 2 percent of the US GDP, and up to 5 percent when you factor in indirect costs surrounding injuries and deaths. There’s a huge long-term benefit.” Autotalks’ downsized technology also could be deployed through smartphonebased Wi-Fi systems. “It can span to other vulnerable road users, like bicycles,” Haran says. “It can even serve pedestrians, for example elderly people crossing remote streets.” A technology that makes everyone safer? Ride on.

California-based Alta Motors plans to extend its reach beyond the electric motorcycle market. The startup has been working on lightweight, electric motorcycles since it was founded in stealth mode in 2010. But Alta Motors plans to eventually sell its proprietary battery pack and drivetrain to other companies working on lightweight vehicles and delivery drones, cofounder and CEO Marc Fenigstein said. Alta Motors currently only sells its Redshift MX, an electric, off-road motorcycle that can drive 2.5 hours on average. The motorcycle has been sold in the US since last August, but sales have been limited as the startup works on scaling up production, Fenigstein said. “The technology, the architecture, and the capabilities that we built as a company in introducing the Redshift have very, very broad applicability across lightweight vehicles,” Fenigstein said. “Really nobody in the market can build a drivetrain for a small vehicle that is as compact, robust, or economical as ours is for a given range and power.” Alta Motors has yet to become a household name, but it has secured backing from some of the most innovative minds in battery tech: Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, two of the original cofounders of Tesla before Elon Musk became CEO. After Tarpenning and Eberhard left the electric car marker, the duo participated in a $4.5 million seed round in 2014. Tarpenning and Eberhard remain passive advisors to Alta Motors to this day. The key technology behind the Redshift MX is Alta Motors’ battery pack, the Alta Pack, and drivetrain, both of which the startup designs in its factory in Northern California. The Alta Pack is a high-density battery that’s smaller and lighter than others on the market, but it doesn’t compromise on power. Fenigstein has said the battery is five years ahead of the curve in terms of range and power. “We’ve advanced transportation battery technology I think more significantly than anyone since Tesla,” Fenigstein said. The Redshift MX, which gets 40 hp and 120 lb.-ft. of torque, is the only Alta Motors bike currently available in dealerships. But Alta Motors will put its Redshift SM on the market at the end of the summer. It’s designed for people who want to use a motorcycle for shorter, urban commutes. It also gets 40 hp and 120 lb.-ft. of torque. The SM, which has a range of 50 miles, is sold out through the end of 2017. But Fenigstein declined to give exact sale and pre-sale figures for the MX and SM. In addition to selling its battery pack and drivetrain technology directly to other companies, Alta Motors also plans to add two more motorcycles to its Redshift lineup. Fenigstein did not provide specific timing for the pending projects. The electric motorcycle market is still relatively small. Alta Motors competes most directly with Zero Motorcycles, which sells similarly priced electric bikes with slightly more power. In early June, Alta closed a small financing round of $27 million led by Grassy Creek Ventures to support those aims. “We are very excited from this foundation to get our technology in the many corners of the lightweight vehicle market as we can,” he said.

From a risky 1200 sq. foot beginning CEO Jerry Ordanis has transitioned GP Bikes into a gleaming 30,000 sq foot superstore that whispered promises of debauchery and demerit points as I hurried past my desires on the showroom floor and found my way to apparel section. Funny thing about aging, our minds loose touch with what is real. So half naked, half covered in leather and fully stuck with my limbs bound in a bizarre bovine bondage rig I resigned to my 50 year old reality. Teetering behind the change room curtain, I strained to reach a zipper and unlock the Dainese one piece before I fell into the showroom like a flabby deathly white freak trying to escape his gimp suit before the police show up. No screaming patrons bolting for the exit and no cops, so that was good but I left that day knowing I would feel naked below the waist and worried that the jacket I purchase was compromised, sized too big. A week later and back at GP the conversation turned to proper sizing and how that determines a garments ability to protect when he asked “Have you heard of Gimoto?” I hadn’t. “Can I propose a deal?” he continued. I like deals, especially on motorcycle stuff so I let my smile answer and a few key strokes later while eyeballing me over the top of his glass frames Ken Dick turned his monitor to display Gimoto’s website. www.gimoto.com/en. My words in trade for a modest discount on a street suit was finalized and I began the design process while researching the company. Established by the Mazzola family in 1890 the Lombardy region of Italy became the site of Gimoto and is still helmed today by brothers Andrea and Daniele. Originally makers of custom gloves for the likes of Giacomo Agostini in 1978 they began hand stitching racing suits. Today whether it’s a full on race fit or a custom street suit the configurator page will keep you second guessing for hours with almost endless design possibilities and true to pedigree, Gimoto makes what could be the finest gloves available. Twenty designs in a tick developed and mumbling about perf schemes to our cats because the humans were skittish and avoiding me, I realized it was time to commit. The bovine and kangaroo swatches helped me decide and Gimoto offers them to bolster what you see on your screen. With my final proposal waiting, GP Bikes arranged the appointment at their then tailor and the catastrophe began. Gimoto supplies a document and instructional video on their website for the tailor and although casual and quick I trusted in her abilities and excitedly returned the measurement set to Ken at GP Bikes. I was discovering he is a perfectionist

and diligently checked every measure but we both missed what would be the undoing of everything, such an aberrant number it should have glared at us from the page. We attributed trust to the tailor and neither of us expected mistakes so Gimoto got the key to begin construction of my properly fitted suit as I started drafting the first part of the review. Ahead of the promised delivery date my suit arrived and like a kid at Christmas I eagerly pulled the curtain closed and started what should have been a bit of a struggle getting into a tight-fitting race suit. It wasn’t and in front of the mirror my excitement deflated as I realized I was more prepared for a wing suit jump then a track day. Somehow the tailor had recorded my waist at 140.5 cm when in actuality 116 was the true read. I stood there in a hand crafted pro level race suit that was designed by me and realized two of me would fit inside. After correcting the waist measure the suit shipped back to Italy on GP Bikes tab and here is where things get somewhat complicated. As the suit was getting 24.5 cm removed I faced the very reason why a custom fit suit was being made. Bordering on obese and scared my finish line was years closer than it should be, I changed. When the corrected suit returned I had lost 14 kg and 6 cm off my waist and performing the tailor duties in house now Ken carved two hours out of a hectic day to make things right, again. Taped and recorded 3 times I compared these with the originals and saw the pattern. Casual and quick related to the tailor’s precision not just the atmosphere in her store. All but one were long and the freakish waist number I can only attribute to a mistake in recording. Another alteration needed and disagreements arose from our separate interpretation of the numbers but in hindsight I realize Ken was simply trying to minimize the upcoming loss for GP Bikes. In the end citing suit integrity, Gimoto refused to make subsequent changes leaving it dangerously ill fitting and unfixable. Ken was adamant in trying to salvage the situation and other then the mistakes of a lax tailor this is the only fault throughout all this. Wanting to dissect the numbers again he failed to understand that our deal had fallen apart. When presented with this Ken immediately offered a full refund and volunteered a cheque without trying to box me into store credit. This was not lost on me and contributed greatly to why I decided to spend it all again at GP Bikes. The Alpinestar Atem suit fits great but I regret the lost opportunity to brandish Gimoto’s distinctive snake head logo and the confidence of perfectly fitted gear.

Over the years, there have been a good number of classic motorcycles produced. These are some of our picks and are in no particular ranking order. Many of these motorcycles can be found in museums or in the personal collections of the wealthy admirers. If you have one that is not on our list send it in with a brief history and you might see it in the next issue. Send to readers@themotorcycletimes.ca 1. Norton Commando The distinguished, Britishmanufactured Norton Commando was prominently named “Machine of the Year” for five consecutive years from 1968 to 1972. The motorcycle is known for having an innovative framework called the “Isolastic System” that solved the long-held problem of engine vibration and revolutionized motorcycles in the process. Designed by a group of engineers who left MercedesBenz, the Norton Commando was produced for 10 years until 1977 when production stopped. With an 850cc engine, the Commando had also proven to be a popular racing motorcycle. 2. Indian Chief Built in 1947, the Indian Chief is one of the coolest looking motorcycles. Built around a 1,200cc engine, the Indian Chief could hit 85 miles per hour in third gear. Outfitted with a left foot clutch and hand operated shifter near the gas tank, the Indian Chief broke all the rules and looked good doing it. The Indian Chief had rear suspension that made the ride extra smooth. Although not for everyone, the Indian Chief is the motorcycle of choice among bike purists. 3. Vincent Black Shadow First built in 1948, the Vincent Black Shadow was an innovative motorcycle for its time and had several unique features that included a stressed engine and extensive use of aluminum. The Black Shadow was also superfast, and held the record for fastest production bike ever made for nearly 20 years. Every one of the motorcycles was hand built, mak-

and special. A popular racing motorcycle in its day, the Black Shadow had a 998cc engine that made it difficult for riders to control.

4. Honda Rebel In terms of modern era bikes, the Honda Rebel, first produced in 1985, is hard to beat. Its classic build and loud spoiler hid the fact that the Honda Rebel was actually a revolutionary motorcycle for its time. In the mid-1980s, this bike redefined reliability and fuel efficiency among motorcycles. Now considered a vintage ride, the Honda Rebel came equipped with 234cc V-twin engine that allowed it to reach top speeds of up to 70 miles per hour on city streets. Lightweight and easy to handle, the Rebel was also very good on gas, and the relaxed riding position made it a popular touring bike. 5. Velocette Viper A classic motorcycle from the 1950s and 1960s. Many collectors prize this bike above all others, and claim that it can stand next to any other legendary motorcycles. The Velocette Viper features glass fiber enclosed panels that were revolutionary in the 1950s, as well as a 349cc engine that had a bi-metal cylinder with high compression pistons. Some special model Vipers also had extra-large three gallon gas tanks. This enabled the Viper to drive at extremely high speeds for long periods of time. In fact, this bike holds an unbeaten record of cruising for 24 hours straight at 100 mph The Viper was produced from 1955 until 1968. 6. Royal Enfield Bullet The Royal Enfield Bullet, just saying its name is enough to make some people salivate. The motorcycle also lays claim to a special record. It has the longest continuous production run of any motorcycle in history. Versions of the Royal Enfield Bullet have been produced since 1948. However, the version that most collectors want to get their hands on is the very first Bullet that was made in 1931. This original model features a 350cc four stroke engine, as well as a cool chrome finish.

7. BMW R32 Looking every bit the antique that it is, the BMW R32 is one of the oldest motorcycles ever made, and one that always catches the eye of collectors. First built in 1923, the R32 was BMW’s first foray into motorcycle production after the company was banned from building airplanes following the First World War. And while this motorcycle now looks like a cross between a bicycle and a moped, the R32 set the template for what has become the typical BMW bike: a boxer-twin engine with shaft-drive. In fact, many of the design elements found in the R32 motorcycle were later incorporated into BMW cars, which the company started making in 1928. Believe it or not, motorcycles came first at BMW. 8. Harley-Davidson WLA For motorcycle aficionados and World War II history buffs, they don’t come any better than the Harley-Davidson WLA. This motorcycle was built for the U.S. Army during the Second World War and is slightly different from the civilian WL model. The fenders, for example, were modified on the WLA so that the bike could withstand the muddy battlefields in Europe. Many WLA bikes also came equipped with leg guards and windshields to cut down on the spray from puddles and mud. And, the WLA bike also came with one-of-a-kind blackout lights that were used when traveling with a military convoy at night. Production of the WLA motorcycle spanned the war years 1940 to 1945. A total of 90,000 WLA motorcycles were manufactured. Today, the Army green-coloured WLA is considered one of the coolest heavy motorcycles ever built. 9. Triumph Bonneville For some gearheads, the British company Triumph is the first and last name in motorcycles. And the very best motorcycle ever built is the Triumph Bonneville. First appearing in 1959, the Triumph Bonneville is named after the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, where the bike competed to break numerous land speed records. The motorcycle easily reached speeds of up to 115 miles per hour, which was

10. BMW Slash 5 Known as the “Slash 5” series of motorcycles, the BMW R50/5, R60/5 and R75/5 are considered by many experts to be the most reliable bikes ever built. Made for only three years between 1970 and 1973, the Slash 5s, as they came to be known, were eventually replaced by the 6 series of motorcycles. However, the Slash 5s were extremely advanced for their time with electric starters and telescopic forks. The R75/5 is considered the very best of the Slash 5s, as well as the fastest of the series as it could hit a top speed of 110 miles per hour. The Slash 5s also have a cool look and have proven themselves to be an ideal street bike.

Every sub-culture has its own language. Since ADV is the sub- sub-culture of the subculture of motorcycling, that means the linguistic element becomes even more arcane and nothing smells more like newbie than a rider who isn’t hip to the talk. In order to sound like a real ADV veteran, here’s a brief glossary that provides the lingua franca you need to help you socially navigate every donut shop stop like you were riding 70/30 tires long before people started putting them on Panigales. Farklegenügen - Literally translated, it combines the German word for “enough,” (genüg) with the most overused word in ADV circles – farkles. Initially contrived by owners of Germanic ADV bikes to describe their wish list of desired mods, or a plea from exasperated friends who could no longer stand by and watch the carnage of spending, farklegenügen has become a household word. Like daily flossing, healthy eating and not scratching yourself down there in public, farklegenügen is a philosophical goal that can never be achieved, only aspired to. Donkey Show - Describing two or more KLR 650 riders in close proximity, this term originated from the fact that a full-day adventure ride on one of these bikes will make you feel like the ill-fated audience participant of a Tijuana midnight revue at El Gabacho Stupido. The sight of a multiple KLR’s arriving typically prompts sotto voce comments of, “This ride is turning into a total donkey show,” from snooty owners of European fetish bikes. If your group ride becomes this situation, be sure to keep yourself upwind of said donkeys. Touratettes - Touratettes is classified as an involuntary vocal tic in which the afflicted rider repetitively blurts the name of Touratech – the holy temple of ADV retailing. Touratettes is most common among owners of German, English and Austrian ADV bikes and is characterized by a premonitory urge to talk about the sufferer’s latest find, resulting in a build-up of tension that can only be relieved when the brand name is spoken. Touratettes can cause headaches, irritation and anxiety in fellow riders who find themselves unable to escape an endless stream of Touratalking. Stories abound in ADV circles about the horrors of coming across clusters of zombified, Klim–wearing, Sidi-booted orthodontists chanting “It’s from Touratech” similar to that creepy “His name was Robert Paulson” scene from Fight Club. In worst case scenarios, individuals afflicted with may evolve into coprolalia, whereby the speaker shouts inappropriate words, like “Goldwing,”and “trike.” Skid - Defined as a sideways or oblique slide, skids may be highly undesirable on the road, but occur frequently off-roads. This term is also used to describe what a rider discovers in their underpants until they reach a point of reflexive competence with doing the manoeuvre on a 500lb ADV bike loaded with enough gear to take Hannibal cross the Alps. Sweeper - Sweepers are the wide open, euphoria-inducing turns we go adventuring for, sometimes requiring epic expeditions of Tolkienian proportions, over road, river and

heather. It’s also the name for your significant other who his forced to follow behind you with a broom when you come home from said ride, traipsing through the house babbling in tongues about panoramic vistas and grizzly bears, all while dropping sand and stones from every orifice, like you just took out a wall at the State Prison. GS - It’s the call sign of an iconic series of Teutonic, sturm-und-drang motorcycles widely credited with launching the ADV mania. Officially, company representatives will tell you that GS stands for Gelände/ Straße; literally “land and street.” Actual GS owners, however, know the nefarious truth that this is just a benign public cloak to cover its never-spoken-aloud true meaning – Gold Standard – since potential owners must ante up a gold bullion deposit of South African Krugerrands in order to test ride these bikes that cost more than a new kidney. Katoom - The ADV in-crowd’s nickname for KTM, an Austrian manufacturer of highly exalted, large bore ADV bikes, katoom is also the disturbing, lurching sound your bowels suddenly make as your backroads, shantyshack lunch of pigs ear tacos and boiled peanuts loads from the magazine to the chamber. It is also used unsuccessfully at times by hipster newbies, hoping to impress; as in, “I just got back from riding the Katoom Pass. Did it in eight days, bro. Epic!” Klimax - The once-in-a-lifetime moment of orgasmic ecstasy when an ADV rider has finally scraped together enough dosh to buy a $2,000 Klim Adventure Rally jacket. Klimax is typically followed shortly thereafter by the primal, soul-destroying wail of an existentially broken rider who simultaneously realizes that they have lost the single aspiration that gave their life hope and purpose. High Side/Low Side - Unlike road riding, in which these terms designate instantaneous misery, High Side and Low Side have completely different meanings in ADV riding. For example: if you come upon a mountain and choose a route worthy of Lewis and Clark, resulting in more 2 days of riding, at least one tacoed rim, a case of hypothermia and a distal radius fracture, then you choose the High Side. If you are a rider of lesser gumption and select the route that involves only an extra 1-1/2 hours of riding, a near bunny rabbit collision, at least two energy drinks and ends at a shop selling ice cream cakes, then you choose the Low Side. Capriole - Stolen from our equine cousins, the Capriole is an “airs above the ground” move of classical dressage in which a horse leaps into the air, kicking out its back legs with all four hooves off the ground. We’ve applied this term to describe the moment of clarity and horror that occurs when an inexperienced ADV rider unexpectedly gets their first taste of air on a large bore, heavily loaded bike and loses purchase on the footpegs. Why call it that? Because presently this spectacularly spastic fail doesn’t have a name. Plus, it’s far more elegant to nonchalantly utter, “Look there, old chap, Nigel’s about to execute a Capriole…” than it is to lose your composure and shout, “Holy $%&@! That guy is $%#?@&!!!”

The Other Black Art...Trailering A Wrench in the Works david heron

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

So, let’s talk about another Black Art of motorcycling , the art of trailering. Of course, the first Black Art is carburetion. That one is so tough that most of us can’t even spell it. But, that does give me an idea for another future column. Back to the subject at hand. As you know, I have classic bikes. It’s not that they are unreliable but many of us don’t want to ride the long road to events, or don’t want to risk getting caught in the rain either going or coming to an event or, like me, I am too darn old to sit in the saddle for hours on end on some straight 4 or 6 lane highway tempting cars to hit me or pull into my lane without looking. I get tired just writing long sentences like the one I just finished. So, the solution to all of your classic bike and classic old guy biker becomes the trailer. Let’s start at the logical place, yes unusual for me. Many wouldn’t even think about this but, you need a trailer hitch. Let’s assume that you have a vehicle too. You go to the hitch place and plop down about $500 and you have your hitch. You have to sit around and wait for the deed to be done or drop off your car or truck and come back later to that lovely 500 buck bill. Step two on the logical trail to trailering your bike is the trailer. You need one. A little flat bed one. A box trailer or if you are

flush with bucks and willing to part with them, an enclosed trailer. Now you have to remember that the bigger the trailer, the bigger the tow vehicle must be. Let’s not try to tow a big enclosed trailer with heavy frame and aluminum top with your Prius. Again, logic must prevail. I guess that you have to figure out what you want to do with the trailer. A few guys at my Kawasaki Triples meets also bed down in their trailers so have at least some kind of bed or mattress. It is a true man’s man who wants to sleep in the gassy, oily trailer that tows his gas leaking, oil spewing triple around. I am not certain but these could also be the guys who keep their bikes in their living room or bedroom too. Likely, I would have to guess that they are also single. I can’t imagine the LSW wanting my bike in the bedroom. Most times I suspect that she doesn’t even want me there especially when snoring comes into the picture. I am lucky enough that, in a previous period of my life I had boats. I had bought an inflatable boat which also included a nice trailer. This was the basis for my initiation into trailering. Remember also that I am a cheap SOB. I had an old cottage bedroom door that I laid on the boat trailer and fastened down with u-bolts to the frame. I put 4 eye bolts through it and instantly had a base for my bike trailer. I am still surprised that some police officer

didn’t stop me with a bike strapped to a door on a trailer just to see if I was actually all there mentally. One learns stuff by observing others. A friend from the Triples club had basically the same trailer as me. He had 2 x 6’s laid down long ways and channels bolted to them for the wheels of the bike. Now, this was a good idea and worthy of copying on my part. Off to the local lumber store for 2 x 6’s and a quick stop at Cradle Ride Trailers for a single bike channel and, oh yes, a stop at Canadian Tire for a super drill bit to drill through the steel trailer frame and I was ready to commence. I know what you’re thinking but, no, I did not have any problems drilling and bolting the whole thing in place. Finally a professional looking trailer where I welcome inspection from some policeman. Of course, it has never happened though. I have tie down straps from Canadian Tire too. These are hooky things with a ratchet on them to pull down and hopefully hold down the bike. They come in various lengths and colours and the cheap ones, remember about my thrifty side, last about a year before you are fighting to get them to start ratcheting or to let off to get the bike off the trailer when you finally arrive at your destination. After a Triples function last week, I finally went out and got some good straps with fancy rubber lined handles. Being true to form, they were on

sale at the Tire. Before you get to tie the bike down on the trailer with your new fancy straps, it only makes sense that you have to get the bike on the trailer in the first place. This sounds like a simple proposition but, let me tell you, it ain’t. I got by for years with a 2 x 6 with a couple holes for pins to hold it to the trailer without it falling down with the bike halfway up it. Please, don’t ask. Suffice to say that the bruises took quite a while to heal. After a good 6 or 7 years of this, I saw steel folding ramps on sale at my favourite place, CTC. While my Long Suffering Wife reads the local paper that lands at the end of our driveway on Thursdays, I go immediately to more important things, namely the CTC sale flyer. I got a pair of folding ramps and promptly sold one at cost to another friend who was also toiling with a board ramp. Thrifty eh? The ramp folds up neatly and gets bungeed to the 2 x 6 base beside the mounted bike. I put more eye bolts to clip to and they stop the folder ramp from moving back and forth too. Here we are now. I have the ramp, the trailer, hold down straps and the vehicle to tow said trailer and, oh yes, I also have a bike to tow. So I run the bike up the ramp onto the special bike channel and then wonder how the heck I can hold the bike, place the straps in the right place and tighten the whole thing down. Originally, when I

sorb the bumps. I can’t tell you which is correct or even which is better but I will stick with my way. The rear is about the same. I don’t fully tighten but do snug them up quite well so the bike is firmly held. Some put the bike in gear to stop rolling back and forth but not me. I place another strap on a foot pedal and tighten it to the forward eye to hold the bike against the raised front portion of the channel. It has taken various experimental strap placements and a near fail on one occasion to find the best places to actually put the hooks for the straps on the bike. With signal lights, fancy fenders and headlight mounts, it is getting harder and harder to find a good place. I have found that the handle bar brackets are a good one. Depending on what is in the area, I either use the actual hook on the bar clamps on the Kawasaki and extra looped straps on the new Triumph. One of the first times I made the long trip to Paris Ontario for the CVMG meet, I had a beautiful Norton Commando Fastback. I had placed the hook not on the bar clamp but against the throttle grip body instead. I happened to be looking out the rearview

mirror and saw that the whole twist grip was sliding down the bar. Much longer and the strap would have flown off and the bike likely would have cart wheeled past me on the 401. For once, luck was with me that day. The moral of the story is: pick a good and safe spot to attach your strap. When you finally are finished loading and hit the road, I find that I must drive much slower than usual. This is a combination of the fact that there is actually more strain on the car from towing and an overpowering worry that the whole deal is going to break and spread your pride and joy all over the blacktop. Anyway, that is how I feel. I recently had to take my new Triumph to the dealer in London for its first check up and oil change. Because I had to go for work, I chose to trailer it down, drop it off and pick it up after work to return home. Driving slower than usual also kind of strengthens my feeling that drivers in Southern Ontario are all crazy. I am doing 100 kph and basically stick to the right lane on the 400 series highways. Cars are tailgating literally inches from my bike and whipping around and cut-

ting back in scant inches in front of the car. No one seems to have ordered the optional signal lights on their cars or choose to conserve bulb life by not using their signals. Cars go ripping up the shoulder of the highway or pass on the right on on- ramps. Everyone is in a hurry and a car and trailer going the speed limit seem to be a huge annoyance. Maybe I feel this way when I am commuting and not trailering but the recent experience will hopefully have an effect on my own driving. When I reach the final destination with white knuckles from worrying about other traffic and the bike on the trailer, I have my own single-handed offload. I take the rear straps off, put down the side stand and then let off the right front strap. In the perfect world, the forks extend and the bike drops on to the side stand and then I can casually undo the slack left front one while the bike leans on its stand on the trailer. It has worked so far anyway. Then, down the ramp, stopping at the end of the trailer with the front brake on and stepping down on to terra firma. Problem? What problem? Sounds easy, doesn’t it?

wasn’t quite so smart, I needed help from my daughter, or son, or even the LSW to get the whole thing underway. One time I got a girl who happened to be walking by at the time to sit on the bike on the trailer while I put on the straps. She seemed to avoid walking past after that. Since that time and, due to the fact that I hate depending on people to help me, I developed an almost foolproof system. I run the bike up and onto the trailer, put the side stand down and let it lean. This did backfire one time when I first loaded the Holy Grail but that was only one isolated incident. Because the side stand has the bike leaning to the left, I loosely tightened a strap on the left and then put one on the right side and begin tightening that one. The right side tightens down compressing the forks and as the bike gets leaned to the right, the left side tightens too. Then it is just a matter of making sure the bike is sitting straight up. Now there are two schools of thought on how much to tighten the straps. Myself, I like to fully compress the forks while my friend with the same trailer likes to leave a bit of play in the forks to ab-

Rossi: “I race for this feeling” Making history - it’s all in a day’s work for the ‘Doctor’ after another landmark victory in the Dutch GP Photo by Rob O’Brien

Szoke claims 61st career victory at St-Eustache Race day at round 3 of the 2017 Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship ended as most had expected, with Jordan Szoke (Lynden, ON) winning the 22-lap Feature Race in convincing fashion at Autodrome St-Eustache. Most of the action-lled race day was under constant threat of rain, but all races were contested under mainly dry conditions, with some light rain falling during both Pro contests. Polesitter Szoke took the lead early in Pro Superbike and got away from the eld immediately, pulling clear for a 6.203-second victory on his Mopar Express Lane/Motovan BMW S1000RR ahead of the Z1/Parts Canada Yamaha R1 of Bodhi Edie and the Sturgess Cycle/Liqui Moly Kawasaki ZX10RR of Kenny Riedmann. It marked the seventh consecutive win at St-Eustache for the 11-time Canadian Superbike champion, who rst won at the Montreal-area track back in 2002. “The bike was fantastic all weekend, right out of the box,” said Szoke on the podium after his 61st Canadian Superbike victory. “We have a great setup here, and this is my strongest track. Our bike’s running amazing, and we had it dialled for the race. “I was getting pretty angry when it was starting to rain,” continued Szoke, acknowledging the threatening pre-race conditions. “I’m a great rain rider, but I knew if we had a dry track, we had the bike.” Szoke’s BMW actually started to slow in the nal turn, and he was barely able to complete his in-lap. The champ suspected a minor electronic glitch. Szoke will carry a 33-point lead into the round 4 double header at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, NS. “That was a blast,” said runner-up Edie after an engaging race-long duel with Riedmann for second. “It was pretty much a battle between Kenny and I from lap 3 or 4; we had multiple passes in different corners on each lap, inside and outside. I got a pretty good start from the second row, but unfortunately Jordan got out front and got away right away. He had the pace all weekend, and I’m happy with second, but it’s time to chase the big sh. We’ll get there.” “It was a super fun race, and that’s why we ride motorcycles,” said Riedmann, who earned his third podium nish of the year. “We’re not making a living out here, and it’s just so much fun when you get into a race-long battle like that. I wish I would

have come out on top, but I’m just happy to be having fun on a motorcycle, because I haven’t been having much fun lately. Now my team is ready to regroup and start winning races.” In an exciting ag-to-ag Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike race, Tomas Casas (Peterborough, ON) established a gap early on his Peterborough Cycle/Parts Canada Yamaha R6 ahead of polesitter Mitch Card (Ripley, ON) and fourth qualier Frank Trombino (Etobicoke, ON), while Kristopher Garvie (Caledon, ON) looked to play the spoiler on his Riedmann Management/Tracksport Technologies Kawasaki ZX-6R. In a thrilling nish, Trombino got his ProStar/White Gold Financial Servicesbacked Honda CBR600RR around Card’s Goderich Toyota/Shoei Premium Helmets Yamaha and quicky began to reel in Casas. Trombino got close, but Casas jammed the door shut on the last lap to earn his second victory in three races this season. Card got third, just ahead of Garvie, with Louie Raffa (Ste-Marthe, QC) rounding out the top ve on his Raffa Racing/Liqui Moly Honda. “The goal was to get a good start, because I knew I could run a faster pace than the other guys,” said the 18-year-old Casas, who built upon his points lead going into the remaining four races of the season. “We made some suspension changes last night, but it was still bottoming out when I pushed it. I was at the limit, but I just kept my rhythm going, and I hope I can keep that momentum going at Shubenacadie.” Kawasaki rider Samuel Desmarais (Lasalle, QC) was the big winner in the Amateur category, winning both the Magneti Marelli Amateur Superbike and Shoei Premium Helmets Amateur Sport Bike races. It was the second time Desmarais has ‘done the double’ after winning both classes at the season opener in Shannonville in May. The weekend’s second Kawasaki Ninja 300 race was an exciting one for the strong spectator crowd at St-Eustache. Four riders factored into the lead battle for more than half the race before three-time 2017 race winner Xavier Paradis (Shannon, QC) and the previous day’s Ninja victor, Jared Walker (Oakville, ON), made it a two-horse race up front. Paradis managed to edge last lap leader Walker en route to a nail-biting 0.120-second victory to increase his existing points lead in the class. Amy Szoke (Lynden, ON) came in a close third, with Johann Plancque (St-Jerome, QC) taking fourth.

20 years and 313 days is the longest winning career in the history of Grand Prix motorcycle racing, and it really couldn’t be anyone else: taking his tenth victory at the TT Circuit Assen, the ‘Doctor’ made it a day to remember. A second row start was a good start for the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider, and the Italian moved up into third off the line, squarely in the ght at the front from the off. Conditions then worsened in the latter stages as Rossi led and some light rain looked to spoil the party, but the rider from Tavullia remained locked in a tense duel for the win with compatriot Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Racing). Slicing through the trafc on the nal lap and just ahead over the line, the victory was a landmark one for the number 46: extending an already record-breaking winning career, taking a tenth win at Assen and taking win number 115 overall over a year since his previous victory. As the yellow smoke clears at the TT Circuit Assen, that’s not all: Rossi is now seven points off the Championship lead after eight rounds, and third in the title standings.

Valentino Rossi: “It’s a very important victory, not only for the Championship but the feeling – coming back to number one is fantastic, after one year. I race motorcycles for this feeling, for how I feel for ve or six hours after the race – especially after a year without victory. It was a great race, a great battle with Petrucci and from a technical standpoint I’m happy. We’ve worked on the bike and changed the chassis, and now it’s like I’m more able to ride it in my way, in a better way. Everything is open, and from one track to it another can change a lot – so we have to wait and see at Sachsenring. But I’m so happy for my tenth victory here after getting the tenth in Barcelona – and they’re two of my favourite tracks so I’m so happy to be able to win ten times. The rst moment I became optimistic about winning was when I had good pace and I was able to increase my advantage, then it started to rain! It was very difcult because it’s easy to make a small mistake and throw everything away. But after I battled with Danilo and I saw everyone stayed calm, I pushed a little bit in the last two laps and it was enough!”

Petrucci: “I felt the win very close”

Another podium for ‘Petrux’ - just hundredths off a first ever victory at Assen Danilo Petrucci (Octo Pramac Racing) is on an incredible run in 2017, and followed up his rst front row in Barcelona with another in the Dutch GP - just missing out on pole. When the lights went out on race day, the Italian kept his form and fought at the front - beginning the nal laps locked in a duel with nine-time World Champion Valentino Rossi (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP). Finding some trafc on the nal lap, ‘Petrux’ was just out of touch for a lunge at the nal chicane but came home an incredibly close second to take his second podium of the year - also his second in three races. Danilo Petrucci: “It was a great race! At the beginning we were quite calm, following Zarco and then when I saw Valentino go in front, I tried to follow him. I think in the dry he was faster but then the rain came and it was quite difcult. I tried a lot to get in front but it was too risky, then I noticed I was a bit faster in Turn 12 in the acceleration, my Ducati was faster - and I passed him with four laps to go, but he overtook me again. Then on the last lap I found Rins

and almost crashed passing him, so I’d lost valentino. But I’m happy, it’s a great result but I felt the win very close. The common thing from yesterday was that I was in front and then lost out at the end - then again today I was in front and then lost at the end! Here I wanted to be very strong, and I’m happy because next week we’re in Germany, a track I like where last year I was on the second row in the dry and led the race in the wet. I’m also happy for the Championship because we’re quite close - and I’m always there, even me! I like being here...”

Beaubier Podiums And Hayes Finishes Fourth In Superbike Race 2

It was an up-and-down day for Yamaha’s “Fast Four” road racers on Sunday at Utah Motorsports Park, and that statement should be taken literally. On the “up” side, Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Factory Racing teammates Cameron Beaubier and Josh Hayes nished third and fourth, respectively, aboard their Yamaha YZF-R1 motorcycles in the afternoon’s MotoAmerica Superbike race. Cameron kept his #1 R1 upright in the 17-lap contest and nished solidly on the podium after falling down a couple of times earlier in the weekend, including in Saturday’s Superbike race. On the “down” side, Monster Energy/Yamalube/Yamaha Extended Service/Graves/Yamaha teammates Garrett Gerloff and JD Beach tangled (yes, literally) on the nal lap of Sunday’s MotoAmerica Supersport race. Both riders went down in unison, and their Yamaha YZF-R6 machines got stuck together, which delayed both riders’ ability to rejoin the race and prevented either of them from winning the race. They both did manage to nish, albeit in 17th position for Garrett and 19th for JD. On the “up” side, JD retained his onepoint lead over Garrett in the Championship, with Valentin Debise winning the race and taking over third place in the standings, 47 points adrift of Garrett and 48 points behind JD. After the Superbike race, Cameron said, “It’s great to get a podium after how horrible the past two days have gone. It’s frustrating. I started out feeling like it was going to be a good weekend. The R1 is good around here, and I like this track a lot. I had a lot of problems this weekend, so hats off to my team for working so hard to rebuild my bike more than once over the past couple of days. It feels good to get back on the podium again, and give that to my team. Laguna Seca is next, and I’m looking forward to racing there. My family and friends will be there, and I really like the track a lot. It’s been a good track for me.” Josh commented, “I felt like we improved my R1 a lot from yesterday. The rst half of today’s race went better than yesterday, but my body let me down a little bit. This is the rst race weekend of the season that I haven’t been on the ground, and those get-offs have taken their toll. I just wasn’t able to maintain my pace. Once Cameron caught up to me, as much as I would have liked to ght for the position with him, I was a wounded duck out there. I let him through and managed my race. So, it was an unfortunate fourth place for me. I can do better that, and my team deserves better. So, I’m going to go home and work on some solutions for (Mazda Raceway) Laguna Seca.”

Aprilia RSV4 RR Superbike

Designed for racers but built for riders.

marissa baecker

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

“That is the sexiest ride I have ever been on.” The first words uttered from my lips after three hours experiencing the 2016 Aprilia RSV4 RR. I knew it was going to be an exciting ride from the moment I saw the bike. A simple walk around is enough to draw in any rider to take a closer look. As subtle as the satin gray colour is, the strategically placed red accents, including the hashtag on the fairing, #BeARacer, and 320mm stainless steel, floating, doubledisc, red-letter branded Brembo hugging the front and 220mm at the back, plus three adjustable Bosch traction control settings and you just know this bike is housing a few surprises. Surprise number one revealed itself immediately upon mounting the saddle. I fit. RR’s are not typically my ride due to the compact rider triangle required for high-speed, racetrack performance. However, not only was this “race replica” designed for legs with a 33” seat height, it also offered length (80.5”) in a 56.5” wheelbase, with a perfect reach across the 18.5 L fuel tank, to the 29” wide bars and no wrist pressure inhibiting rider comfort. Compact yet comfortable. It was as though this ride was made for the taller adrenaline junkie.

The 2016 analogue/digital combo dash gives the rider necessary information in a basic view. However, 2017 this view has gotten a technology overhaul and more closely resembles a digital cockpit with an assortment of colorful icons representing pertinent information. As Brian Milligen, CEO of MotoVida in Kelowna, B.C., was giving me the run down of the bike, surprise number two showcased. It has a sound that makes a statement! The bike was purring, quick glance at my display, the neutral ‘N’ was lit and Brian opened the throttle. The symphony of high performance that growled out the 4 into 2 into 1 exhaust took my breath away and could only be compared to its four-wheeled Italian counterparts – Ferrari or Lamborghini. My eyes said it all from behind my visor as Brian laughed. Words were not needed. He knew what I thought. “I’ve tuned it down to start with,” he said, referring to Sport mode, the tamer of three ride by wire engine maps, as well as the (AWC) wheelie control to keep the front end down until I got familiar with all the power the bike had to offer. That would leave Track and Race mode left to discover as well as the remaining Aprilia Performance Ride Control (APRC) factory tuning options traction control (ATC), launch control (ALC) and more. Can’t say I have ever seen ‘launch control’ on a

motorcycle but, upon acceleration from city to highway, I quickly learned why it was there. Powering this Italian stallion is a liquid cooled, 65 degree V4 positioned as low within the chassis as possible for low centre of gravity and producing 201 HP at 13,000 RPM. Open throttle and instant power with maximum torque at crankshaft 84.8 ft. lbs at 10,500 rpm. The last time I rode a 1000cc supersport motorcycle was at California Superbike School finessing the art of high speed cornering and braking on a racetrack. The RSV4 has a similar feel, weighs in eight pounds lighter at 450 lbs fluids in and compared to the hard, compact ride of the bimmer, the RSV4 offers high speed performance with comfort. The front Sachs upside down 43mm, fully adjustable fork tubes offer up 4.7” of wheel travel to absorb those bumps in the road. Rear suspension with a doublesided swingarm and Sachs single shock, adjustable delivers 5.1” inches of travel. As I blazed a trail down the highway, I ‘felt’ the bike approaching the zing (my slang when a bike feels as though it is being pulled back like an elastic band and with a few more rpm, the band lets go and . . . Zing-the power launches the bike forward). The technical reference for this would be the bike approaching the pow-

er band in the gear. I glanced down at the gauges noting 6,000 RPM at 98 km/h in second gear with at least another 2,000 RPM of play. The bike was solid, smooth and handling beautifully. If not for knowing my speed and the speed limit (not to mention the 40 km over posted limit automatic impound law), I would have ‘zinged.’ However, I promised to return the bike that day, not 7 days later with a large dent in my wallet. By third, I was lying flat on the tank, slid my back side to the back of the saddle and as the speedometer passed 120 km/h, I changed to fourth, not because I needed to, but because I thought I should. Mistake. I should have listened to the bike because I geared back down almost immediately climbing a hill. My excursion around the Okanagan Valley logged about 300km in distance but did not offer gears beyond fourth. Those are left for the track. After a technical overhaul for 2017, the Aprilia RSV4RR will bring you as close as you can get to a MotoGP bike right off a showroom floor. If you have a need for speed, this is your bike, but make sure you have the skill to handle all it has to offer. To fully explore all this model, I would need a trip to Canada’s latest track addition, designed by Jacques Villeneuve, Area27, in Osoyoos, B.C. or any other appropriate race circuit.
