Harley-Davidson’s ‘Battle of The Kings; Now Has A Canadian Finalist

Battle of the Kings has it’s first-ever Canadian finalist, a dealership team from Calgary, has advanced in Harley-Davidson’s Battle of the Kings competition that highlights the artistic and creative capabilities of motorcycle customization. The competition had over 270 global entries, 21 of which were from Canada. Earlier this year, the top-three Canadian semifinalists were chosen based on public vote. From there, the top-three competed at the Roll the Bones event in Montreal where the Calgary team was chosen to become the Canadian National Finalist based on a panel vote. The team is now entering the global part of the competition and more than ever, needs Canada’s votes in order to compete as one of the top-four nationalists to advance to the global stage at the EICMA in Milan, Italy on November 5. Canadians can rally behind their national finalist by casting a vote at www.customkings.harley-davidson.com. The bike is named ‘Moonshine’. Good Habits are Hard to Break

It has been said that learning to ride a motorcycle well is more difficult than learning to fly. Every appendage must perform in coordinated harmony while at the same time working independently in order to perform specific controlled maneuvers smoothly. I don’t know how true that is but what I do know is that learning to ride well takes practice. An instructor once said to me that there are three types of riders, the first has instinctive skills, they can get on a bike and with very little instruction or guidance, they are in control in no time. Then there are those who will be able to ride, but require detailed instruction and lots of practice time. Last but not least, there are those who want to ride, but no matter how much instruction and guidance, they are bound to run into the broad side of a barn the first time they take the bike out. I hope you find yourself in one of the first two categories and not the last one I described. No matter what category you fit into, one of the most important words of wisdom I can pass along to riders who are just starting out and have one or two seasons now under their belts is make sure you have a solid foundation of good habits and skills before you venture out into traffic. Bad habits come easy to everyone, and riding with peers who despite having many years riding experience are not always the right mentors to have when learning to ride. Seasoned riders tend to let some critical elements in riding fall by the wayside over the years. Skills like consistent shoulder checks, following distances, blocking positions, failure to signal and con-

spicuity are usually the skills that suffer most. As a new(ish) rider, it’s important that you understand that although you may have taken an approved safety course in order to advance to your M2 status, that course consists of only 16 hours of instruction and seat time. At best, each and any of the skills taught consisted of maybe 30 minutes practice time. So, if you think you are ready to mix it up with traffic, you need to give your head a shake. The hardest part of riding a motorcycle is not “at speed” riding, it’s the skills you need to hone while under 40 kph. Slow-speed riding, is more common than you may think. There is always going to be a parking lot you need to navigate and you will find yourself in stop and go traffic more than you want to - guaranteed. This type of riding requires hours and hours of practice in order to have sound skills and the confidence needed to perform slow maneuvers. Before you head out in traffic, take the time to build your skills. Head over to any local sports equipment store or Walmart, get yourself a dozen or so small safety cones and find the nearest parking lot. Setup the cones so you can practice a serpentine type course, adjust the distances to challenge yourself, make a large radius circle and see how slow you can go around the outside of that radius, turn around and go the other way, one way will be more difficult than the other, so spend more time on the one that you find is more difficult. Try riding the inside of that circle, vary your speed. Riding is about control, you being in control of your bike and not the other way around can be a matter of life and death out on the road

and that’s not the time you want to realize you should have spent more time in the parking lot practicing. In case you are not aware, control at slow speed comes from a combination of things you need to do all at the same time. Setting your throttle at a constant rpm and feathering your clutch gives you forward control while at the same time applying some back brake helps to provide stability. Looking through corners and keeping your head up allows you to see where you want to go. Avoid looking down at the front wheel and shift your body position when necessary to counteract the bikes lean. Get comfortable with these skills, then move onto increasing your speed. Take the time you need to build your skills, don’t allow anyone, regardless of experience to tell you when you are ready, you will know when you are ready. If it takes an entire season to get comfortable, so be it. By the time you are ready to graduate from the parking lot, you will know that the time you put into practicing was well spent and the first time you pull into a parking lot with other riders, they will know that you have skills that many of them wish they had, because good habits are hard to break. On another note, keep in mind fall is upon us, that means slippery conditions with falling damp leaves and declining temperatures which means riding conditions with wind chills in the early and later parts of the day. Dressing in layers allows you to be prepared for those changes.

chatterbox 2020 Indian Motorcycles Celebrate the Scout’s 100th Anniversary

Most people know Indian Motorcycle’s Scout model even if they’ve never been on a bike before. It’s the one Burt Munro (and then Anthony Hopkins, fictitiously) rode to a land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats. And it’s currently celebrating its 100th anniversary. Earlier this year, Indian built the oneoff, Scout-inspired Appaloosa to mark the occasion, and to race. That one, sadly and obviously, will not be produced for the masses. Thankfully, Indian recently announced two bikes it will be producing (and selling) for the centennial: the Scout 100th Anniversary and the Scout Bobber Twenty. “100 years is an incredibly special milestone, and it made perfect sense to honor Scout’s history and legacy with these two heritage-inspired 2020 models,” said Reid Wilson, Vice President for Indian Motorcycle, in a press release. Even more special is the fact that we still have the Scout around at all today. The original Scout was only made between 1920 and 1946, and the original company went kaput in the ‘50s. After being passed around between various entities, the brand ended up under Polaris, and the Minnesota company has done right by the legend

with these two releases. You’ll instantly recognize the official 100th Anniversary model, done up in Indian Motorcycle Red and Anniversary Gold trim. Less obvious style cues taken from the original include a floating leather solo saddle and wire wheels. As for power, you’ll find the same 100-horsepower V-twin engine on the less expensive stock Scout, but as Indian notes, it’s enough “power to pass anyone, anywhere.” Plus, only 750 of these special-edition models will be made. If you can appreciate the history of the Scout, but need something you won’t feel bad about beating up, the Bobber Twenty model takes the heritage less literally. You get the same floating saddle and 69-cubic-inch engine, but the fenders are shortened, the ape-hanger handlebars are higher and the ABS brakes can be eschewed in favor of a lower price. Of course, this is how the two models come straight from the factory. If you want to really honor the history of the Scout, and its most famous rider, you’ll have to add some customization of your own. Not that we can officially endorse that kind of thing.

Zero’s 2020 electric motorcycles include one that’s loaded for adventures

The DSR Black Forest Edition was previously a Europe-only model. Imagine how people use Zero’s electric motorbikes and you’ll probably picture a commute to work or a quick blast through the countryside. Now, however, it’s encouraging you to make longerlasting journeys. The company has introduce a 2020 bike lineup headlined by the DSR Black Forest Edition (above), a previously EU-only ride that’s now available worldwide. It adds three lockable cases, accessory bars, hand guards and a headlamp cover to the DSR formula. You’ll have to structure your adventures around the Black Forest model’s 157-mile range (196 miles if you add a Power Tank), but you’re otherwise good to go for a beach party or even a weekend trip. Just be prepared to spend

some serious cash for the privilege. Other 2020 refreshes are focused more on wringing extra value (and range) out of the lineup, with a few perks. The DS has dipped to a relatively affordable price through its 7.2kWh, 82-mile battery, all the while adding more storage. Hop to the street-oriented SR that now gets you a 14.4kWh Power Pack to extend your rides up to 223 miles -- the best range you’ll get from the lineup this year, Zero said. All the new bikes are available now. The updates probably won’t make you cancel your Harley-Davidson Livewire order, but they could put these machines on your short list if earlier models weren’t quite up to snuff for longer expeditions. https://www.zeromotorcycles.com

Piaggio Recalls Select Aprilia And Moto Guzzi Models

No need to panic! If you own any of these models and year of motorcycles, Piaggio Group USA is proactively taking care of any potential problems. It is up to you to get your bike to the dealership for the initial inspection though. Piaggio have announced a recall on select Aprilia and Moto Guzzi motorcycles. 1,700 potential motorcycles on the street that may be affected by a faulty front brake master cylinder issue. If your motorcycle falls under this recall, you should return the bike to your local dealership, which will examine the brake unit and determine if it needs to be

replaced. The entire process will be covered under the factory warranty. Anytime a manufacturer is made aware of a potential problem, it doesn’t necessarily mean every bike will have the issue. Q. Which bike build category did you choose and why? A. RACE - We wanted to bring the iconic motorcycle of Harley-Davidson back with a modern twist. The 2018 FLSB Sport Glide aka Moonshine screams “I am back”. It gave our team the perfect opportunity to showcase what we believe the 2019 FXRT would and should look like. Q. Did anything or anyone provide inspiration for the design? A. The inspiration for Moonshine came from the 1983-1992 FXRT Sport Glide. Its vintage club style touring is built

for today’s riders and we wanted to bring it back. In order to make the bike “pop”, our design team felt it was best to use copper in place of chrome against the Harley-Davidson Vivid Black to be more visually appealing to our audience. The design was a group effort among our whole service team. Q. What significant changes have you made e.g. frame chassis modification, wheel change, and different tank? A. Our team used mostly Harley-Davidson parts and accessories including a STAGE 1 Screamin’ Eagle pro street tuner, Screamin’ Eagle 10MM Phat spark plug wires black, black H-D hand control lever kit, H-D gloss black engine covers and H-D mid-controls, and H-D 7” Daymaker adaptive LED headlights. We mounted an ’84 style FXRT fairing and closed the tire gap, then painted it to match the front fairing and saddlebags. The new H-D Dominion grips, rider pegs, passenger pegs, and mirrors were refined with real copper plating and CHD Cerakote. The customization of Moonshine shows it is the true Battle of the Kings bike because it is the perfect combination of Harley-Davidson and aftermarket accessories, making it easy for anyone worldwide to reproduce. Q. What in your view is the most special part/change about/to the bike?


Q. Are there any build details/changes that need to be mentioned to appreciate? A. No major changes were done to the bike, as Harley hit a home run, the details were the biggest change on this build to amplify the great parts already on this bike. Q. Have any areas of the build presented challenges? A. Timeline - fitting this project in along with other ongoing projects. Q. The BOTK build is a dealership bike, but is there a custom arm of the business? If yes, what’s the title? A. CHD Customs, Calgary Harley-Davidson Custom Division. Q. How did you first get into bikes? A. My parents rode before I was born, they picked up riding again when I was in high school. My best experience was learning to ride on my mom’s 883 XL in

the yard. Q. What inspired your passion for two wheels? A. My parents inspired me, along with the ability to create something different with customization and personal choice. Q. Nutcase or Necessity? By NILS JENSEN As motorbike riders, it’s hard not to become frustrated with the relatively short Canadian riding season. The prospect of having to put our bikes away for the winter is darn right infuriating. For some, winter is the perfect time to head for warmer climates in order to get their motorbike ‘fix’. For others, they will suffer the withdrawal symptoms knowing that there’s nothing to do but wait until next year. Then, of course, there’s a very small percentage of Canadian riders who will ride all year round, and in all weathers. Many of us think that people who ride their bikes in the depth of winter are complete Nutcases. But, for these hardy few, the pleasures of riding in such bitterly cold and challenging conditions can be incredibly rewarding. Someone once told me that there’s no such thing as good or bad weather … it’s just the wrong clothes! So maybe, with the right preparation and some expertise, allyear riding should not be discounted quite so readily. I was told about Mel Thivierge by our friends at Sturgess Cycle in Hamilton. From the affectionate manner in which they spoke of Mel, I simply had to meet her for myself. Upon meeting her, Mel was not quite what I was expecting. Naturally, she arrived on her motorbike - a Honda NC750. She was also admirably outfitted in good quality, ‘all season’ protective motorcycle clothing. I wasn’t ex-

pecting Mel to be so young nor was I expecting her to be quite so petite. We ordered coffee and sat down for a chat. Mel started off by telling me that she has been riding for about 8 years. Since that time she has owned a number of motorbikes. These included a bright orange Honda CB500 and a Honda ‘Grom’ - which she still has. When I asked her why she was drawn to Hondas, she explained that they have a reputation for impeccable reliability, combined with low maintenance costs. As Mel does such high mileages, these factors are essential for her. It’s a great testament to Honda that all of Mel’s bikes have behaved admirably and have never let her down. Mel’s current ride is a Honda NC750X which has had a couple of choice modifications - most notably there’s an aftermarket exhaust, a full set of luggage and an engine bash plate. Aside from that, the bike was pretty much stock. Mel’s motorbike story actually started back in 2011. Before then, she was a young person struggling with life’s challenges. She was, by her own admission, lacking direction and heading towards oblivion rather quickly. At one point during this period, she even became addicted to video gaming - and the days would pass by as she lived out a virtual existence. Mel started to realize that things had to change. The first thing she had to do was get herself mobile in order to turn her life around. However, she didn’t have a drivers license, and owning a car was out of the question. Even though she was working sporadically - as a lighting technician - she had to come up with a travel solution in order to get her

career on track. Her chosen industry is extremely competitive and when jobs come up she had to be there, no matter what. This is when she started to look into motorcycles as a viable, more affordable alternative to a car. The more she investigated the possibility of owning a motorcycle, the more it seemed to make sense for her unique lifestyle and career. Mel quickly discovered that wishing to own a motorcycle and actually doing so were two quite different things. She learned that the bikes that she thought would fit her needs were relatively inexpensive, but the insurance premiums for a first-time rider quickly put a stop to that. Mel told me that, in quite a few cases, the insurance premiums were more than the price of the bike. With the help of Sturgess Cycle, combined with Mel’s determination to find a solution, the problem was eventually overcome. At last, Mel was mobile and this has made the world of difference to her career. The bike enabled her to get to gigs quickly, so she could pick up more and more work. As Mel needed to work, she had no option other than to get to the venues on her bike. If that meant having to ride in all sorts of unfavourable weather conditions that was just what had to happen. Mel has had the occasional spill but she talks about this in a somewhat blasé fashion. She goes so far as to say that it’s to be expected - especially if you ride in such difficult weather conditions from time to time. What was interesting to hear is that Mel attributes her little accidents to a lack of skill on her part. Rather than focus on the incident in a negative way, she much prefers to learn from these experiences. She laughed as she told me that so long as the bike was OK, it’s not too much of a problem. Maybe it’s as a result of some minor spills that Mel takes her riding skills very seriously indeed. As I started to

realize, Mel doesn’t do anything by halves. She invests a great deal of time refining her motorcycling skills. She told me that she likes to try all sorts of different types of riding - especially ‘off road’ - where she can learn new skills and refine old ones. All of this serves to make Mel a very accomplished rider indeed. Mel’s belief is that the more skills you acquire, the more capable you are to handle the motorbike in just about any conditions. I couldn’t agree more with this belief. I would also add that the more training you have the safer rider you will become. In Mel’s case riding all year round does require a good deal of skill and it’s hard not to be impressed by Mel’s on-going commitment to her bike training. Along with her bike training, Mel also makes her personal safety an absolute priority. She was wearing good quality gear - four-season and waterproof of course - with plenty of armour in it. Mel has a refreshing approach to motorcycle clothing … All the gear all the time, with absolutely no exceptions. She has also adapted some of her gear to accommodate her needs. She smiled as she showed me that she had attached strings of ‘Christmas Lights’ onto her jacket and pants. Mel explained that she switches these on when she rides at night in order to make herself as visible as possible to other road users. Mel rides her bike every day, twelve months a year and in all weathers. Mel says she might get around to taking her driving test (car) one of these days, but somehow you just know that’s not a priority for her. She loves the motorbike lifestyle too much to even consider an alternative. Mel directly links her career success to her motorcycle. The bike also gave her a sense of self and a unique identity. This all enabled Mel to grow her reputation within her industry, where today her expertise is in great demand. Currently,

she is working full time at the Shaw festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake, but she can also be spotted at stage shows and concerts in both Hamilton and Toronto. When Mel does manage to take to time off from work, she gets on her bike and travels around Canada. She told me that the seasonal nature of her job means that she enjoys time off during the colder months. Mel undeniably has the adventure gene. Many of the road trips she has done have been in winter, but that just doesn’t phase her in the slightest. She’s travelled by bike to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Quebec - to name but a few. She simply loads up the bike with everything she needs and heads for the hills. When all is said and done, Mel’s story is a perfect example of the strength of the human spirit. Mel has had to overcome many personal challenges, as perhaps we all have from time to time. In Mel’s case, the motorbike has actually been the solid foundation on which she has been able to rebuild her life and forge a successful career. Mel is living her life to the fullest and the motorbike was the enabler for that. There are two key things that Mel does that every rider can learn from. The first is her on-going commitment to motorcycle training. She continuously strives to learn new skills in order to become the best rider that she can be. The second is to always wear the best protective gear you can afford. Even the most minor incident can cause injury, so it’s extremely important to protect yourself as best you can. Both of these lessons are key to maximizing our enjoyment of motorcycling whilst equipping us to deal with all manner of challenges. Motorcycle culture is ever-changing. Trends come and go, only the best designs stand the test of time. However, as some modifications tend to be a little more ‘creative’ than others, moto modders often find themselves on a the wrong side of the law. Motorcycle laws in the US and Canada are actually more lenient than in other countries, but that doesn’t stop some of these mods getting motorbikes seized by law enforcement every year. When it comes to road safety, custom parts are difficult to get right and often require a number of tests to ensure they’re up to standard. Most of the mods on this list are either aftermarket parts that are illegally

useful tools. Give someone a toot on the horn to let them know you’re there, beep a friend you see walking down the street or blast it at the guy who just stole your parking space, the choice is yours. However, for motorcycle riders, having a pressurised air horn might not afford you all of that freedom. Pressurised horns have been made illegal on motorbikes in a number of states, so be careful where you ride. Air horns are usually found on semis and trains, as they need to alert other road users of their presence from further away due to their heavier weight and longer stopping distance. This isn’t really a problem for bikes, so fitting an air horn could get you into a more hassle

fitted, custom fabrications or older motorcycle parts that have become illegal over time. What they have in common is that they’re all sure to catch the cop’s eye when out on the road, and land the owner a hefty fine or even confiscation of their pride and joy. They might look good (maybe not all of them...) but with obvious added parts, louder engine sounds and dangerous side effects, these motorcycles are not safe for riders or other drivers and riders they share the road with. GET BACK WHIPS Get back whips have a long and somewhat ambiguous history, with no two sources being able to agree on where they actually come from. Some claim that they’re only used by biker gangs to show off club colours, some say they used to be a backup weapon if things got hairy back in the day whilst some claim that they were used a speedometers for bikes that didn’t have a working one (the closer to horizontal the leather whip is, the faster you’re going!) However they were invented, the get back whip is illegal in some states in the US as it can be used as a weapon and is seen as dangerous to other road users. No matter what it’s use is, be careful rocking a get back whip on your ride if you don’t want to get pulled. PRESSURISED AIR HORN The horn is one of motorists’ most

than it’s worth. TOO MANY HEADLIGHTS Obviously, motorcycle riders need to be able to see at night. But there’s a limit to how many lights are actually useful and when they become a hindrance. This bike features over 25 headlights, some of which obscure the rider’s view. The law in most states bans too many headlights, limiting the maximum number to three (which still seems like more than is actually needed!) This is enough to put front lamp mod lovers in a sticky situation. The guy whose bike is pictured above is in serious risk of having his ride confiscated! Being able to see clearly at night is crucial, but being able to see at all during the day is even more crucial! Motorcyclists who love lamps beware, having more lights than a Christmas tree will get you pulled over faster than you can say ho ho ho! HAVING NO HEADLIGHTS On the other end of the spectrum; having a total lack of headlights is arguably even more dangerous. This mod will not only make your bike unrideable at night, it’s also a surefire way to get pulled over. If it’s easy to spot a broken tail light, imagine how easy it is to see a headlight that is totally missing! FITTING RACING/DRAG SLICKS Whilst they might offer superior grip on a dry racing circuit, slicks are not a road legal tyre. In fact when it comes to rainy conditions, or uneven surfaces, slicks are pretty useless. One slight mistake and you could end up with a face full of tarmac. It might be tempting to emulate Valentino Rossi or other motorbike racing favourites, but these tyres are not the way to do it. They’re not cheap either, coming in at around $150 per tyre, making slicks a bad idea for both your body and your bank account! If you still want the performance on the track, without having your bike confiscated on the road, you can still fit these tyres to a separate set of wheels that you reserve only for track days, giving you the extra cornering speed when it matters and the safety of a road legal tire when you get back on the street. RED/BLUE UNDERGLOW LIGHTS Underglow lights may take your mind to the cars of Fast and Furious or Tokyo’s flamboyant car culture. However, motorcyclists also like to show off with some eye-catching illuminations, as you can see!

The problem here is when bikes feature red and blue flashing lights. These are illegal in most states in the US and many other countries too. The lights emulate police cars and other emergency vehicles, which could cause disruption when real emergency vehicles are around. By disrupting legitimate emergencies, your bike, light show and all, could be confiscated. Remember to choose lights that are yellow, green, pink, purple or anything else that won’t confuse fellow motorists when sirens and flashing lights are nearby, it could save your motorbike, and possible someone’s life! REMOVING THE REAR FENDER OR PLATE-HOLDER Adding a custom fender and removing the bike’s plate holder is illegal for obvious. It means you won’t be displaying a licence plate, making it impossible for the cops to identify the bike should they need to. Another thing to watch out for when adding a custom seat/fender is the balance of the bike, as this is a crucial part of the motorcycle’s weight distribution and could seriously affect the handling. Overall, its best to keep important

parts of the bike stock, in order to prevent issues with the balance and weight distribution, but it’s also crucial to keep the licence plate on the rear of the bike. When cops see a missing licence plate, they’re sure to pull you over as soon as they can. HIGH APE HANGER BARS So called because they make the rider look like a monkey hanging from a branch, ape hangers are as much a part of chopper culture as leather jackets and bucket hats. However, there’s a certain height where even bikers draw a line. Not only do these super high ape hanger bars look ridiculous, they’re also dangerous. The higher the bars are, the longer the distance from handlebar to wheel, making the bike twitchy at high speeds. Not to mention the natural riding position they put the rider in. It’s best to give bars like this a miss for a number of reasons. First, they don’t look as cool as you think (looking like you have no control over your bike isn’t cool guys!), second, you’re more likely to fall off and eat asphalt, and third; you’re going to get pulled over by the cops as soon as you hit the highway. hence the splitters (yes, splitters on a motorcycle!). They aren’t road legal, and for a good reason. So, keep your headlights attached and working. You never know when you might need them, and removing them will make you an easy target for patrol cars. FITTING A JET ENGINE Ok, this one kind of goes without saying. It might seem like a cool idea, and it’ll certainly ensure that you win every drag race you ever enter, but fitting a jet engine to your motorcycle is definitely illegal. The speed at which your motorcycle with go with a jet engine fitted is the first problem. You WILL get pulled over if you’re doing over 200 mph on a jet propelled motorbike (some jet engines are capable of going 500mph, although that probably wouldn’t be possible on a motorcycle). Another problem is the safety of the jet engine. As any motorcycle owner knows, oil leaks happen, especially on older models. A jet fuel leak however, is much more dangerous. Jet fuel is highly flammable, making crashes on this bike even more hazardous than usual.

Furygan - the Panther has arrived! By JASON ALEXANDER I have been riding for more years than I care to remember. In all that time I have been through so much motorbike gear I could probably part-fill a second hand clothing store. I have spent most of my life in Europe and, during that time, I have owned some great motorbike gear. Back in Europe, I took it for granted that I had easy access to some of the world’s best motorbike gear. Brands like Dainese, Rukka, Belstaff, Rev’it, Spidi, and Furygan. It wasn’t until I moved to Canada that I realized just how spoilt for choice I had actually been in Europe. Where were all the brands I knew and loved? Where were the stores I could buy it all from? To make matters worse, even when I did find gear in the motorbike dealers, I was often confronted with very limited ranges and clothing brands that I had never heard of. Unfortunately, the quality of these unfamiliar brands’ products was completely lousy. They looked and felt cheaply made, the quality of the materials used was second rate (at best), the built-in armour (if there was any at all) was entry level, they were overpriced and the fit and finish was simply awful. No way I’m buying any of that stuff. Needless to say this frustrated me enormously. I began to resign myself to the prospect of having to buy all of my gear exclusively online from now on -

or buying it during my infrequent visits back to Europe. There does seem to be a remarkable absence of top quality motorcycle gear in Canada. Why is that? I started to think about this and concluded that there could be several reasons for it. However, let’s be crystal clear from the outset, ‘price’ is most definitely not one of those reasons. As mentioned already, the

poor quality, ‘unfamiliar’ brands are very similarly priced to the good stuff. So why is it so difficult to get hold of top quality motorcycle gear? No one buys it. During my two full riding seasons in Canada, I have noticed that a ridiculously large number of Canadian riders don’t bother to wear any suitable motorcycle gear at all. For some riders, the ‘outfit’ of choice seems to be jeans, a teeshirt and training shoes, topped off with some ridiculous excuse for a helmet. This deteriorates further as summer progresses. As the temperatures rise, some riders even switch to shorts and flip-flops. This is all rather bizarre to me, especially as most of these people are riding expensive cruisers. So whilst they have spent upwards of $25k on their motorbike, they have invested ‘sweet FA’ on themselves. Am I missing something here? Are these Canadian riders related to Clark Kent or Thor, and therefore impervious to any injuries that us mere mortals may sustain? Perhaps, as the weather turns, they have a cape in those saddle bags to fend off the icy chill. Protective Gear ruins the ‘badass’ im-

age! I am only surmising here but, maybe some of the riders genuinely believe that protective gear doesn’t fit with the ‘hard core’ biker image. Could it be that they believe that only ‘weeds’, and ‘whoopsies’ and ‘big girls blouses’ have to wear motorcycle gear? Is the absence of suitable riding gear a ‘badge of honour’ to demonstrate how tough they are? Lack of choice and availability. Being

serious. Maybe the fact that motorcycle gear is not readily available in Canada is why so many riders view it as optional or unnecessary in the first place. With so many of the motorcycle dealers only stocking the bare minimum of gear, no wonder riders don’t buy any. Market size. On a global basis, the Canadian motorcycle market is relatively small. According to government figures, there are approximately 730,000 registered motorcycles in Canada. To put that in perspective, there are nearly 1.4 Million motorcycles in London (England) alone. Canada’s vast size also presents enormous

logistical challenges. Then, of course, there’s the Canadian weather that results in a relatively short 6 to 7 month riding season. These three factors combined may serve to discourage clothing companies from even operating in the Canadian market. Online market. It is undeniable that the internet has transformed the retail industry. Why stock motorcycle gear locally when riders can buy online? This is certainly the excuse that some dealerships use - if you ask them why they don’t carry much gear in their showrooms. In the backdrop of all of this, I was contacted by Furygan to let me know that they will be focusing on the Canadian market. I was genuinely pleased to hear that one of the top European brands would finally be available here i n Canada.

For those of you who don’t know, Furygan is a French company. Indeed, they are as French as frogs legs, snails and Champagne - all of which is no bad thing. Based in Nimes, France, they’ve been making top quality technical clothing since 1969, and produce some of the world’s finest motorcycle gear. The Furygan Panther logo is instantly recognizable and is their symbol for the quality of their products - not to mention the fact that it looks pretty cool too. According to Furygan, rider safety and technological innovation are key focus areas. They do have an in-house R&D facility (called ‘Motion Lab’) who are globally recognized as a leading innovator and pioneer of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). For example, it’s impressive that every garment they make meets the stringent EC Level 1 standards. I cannot find any other motorcycle clothing company that can make such a claim. Having owned Furygan products, I have always liked the combination of the classic styling, safety, premium quality and valuefor-money of their garments. But you will have to make up your own minds about all that. Up until now, I understand that Furygan has only really been available in Canada by ordering it online. Furygan have appointed a distributor for Canada - Importation T.A. Inc. - who are headquartered in Terrebonne, Quebec. It remains to be seem as to whether the Canadian Furygan distributor will manage to successfully grow the brand. Let’s

AFTERMARKET SOUND SYSTEMS Everyone loves a good tune to sing along to on a long road trip. But belting out ‘don’t go chasing waterfalls’ whilst you roar down the highway might not be a fun as you first thought. In some states, using an aftermarket sound system is against the law, as well as being pretty annoying for everyone else on the road! With no enclosed cabin, motorbike sound systems act like loudspeakers for the whole road, whatever you listen to, everyone else has to listen to, so choose your tracks wisely. Some motorcycles come with build in sound systems (see the Honda Goldwing and BMW K1600 GT), these have been specially designed for the rider to hear whilst still being able to hear traffic around them. It also reduces the amount of ‘escaping sound’ coming from the cockpit. FRONT BRAKE REMOVAL Removing the front brake of a chopper might make it look sleek and mini-

malistic, but it’s also an easy thing for the cops to spot. The lack of disk on the front wheel is obvious to say the least and, without a front brake you’ll be looking at a vehicle confiscation. What’s more, the front brake of a motorcycle generates 75% of its stopping power, so by removing it, you’re left with only 1/4 of the braking force needed to stop your bike safely. This could cause some serious problems on the highway! Overall, this mod is not great for your bike’s performance or legality. You’ll need a larger area to slow down or stop and the cops will see the naked front wheel coming from a mile away. Pump the brakes before trying this mod! EXHAUST AMPLIFIER OR MUFFLER REMOVAL Motorcycles are loud. That’s a given. But with modern mufflers and quite engines, the sound pollution these machines kick out are becoming minimised more and more each year. But that’s only when bikers abide by the law.

Primarily: when the blinkers are not being used, it looks like the bike doesn’t have any. This makes the rider a sitting duck for traffic cops. Secondly; it’s much more difficult to find replacements when you’re mid-road-trip if your blinkers are custom build LEDs that were custom made for your bike! TRIKE CONVERSION This mod isn’t for the faint hearted, or the weak stomached! Trikes aren’t exactly renowned for their looks, and for good reason. But adding another wheel into the mix when it comes to motorcycles could also land you in serious trouble with the law. The law in most states dictates that converting your bike into a trike changes the nature of the vehicle from being a motorcycle into being a car. This means that all the papers you have regarding your vehicle, including insurance and tax, will have to be changed to the car version. This can be very expensive, so think twice before you make the move to three wheels.

Fitting specialist loud bore exhausts or removing mufflers can greatly increase the noise a bike makes. Granted, they sound great, but they’re also sure to surpass sound pollution levels and land you in trouble with local law enforcement. Some older bikes that predate mufflers or feature louder engines might be exempt from this, as they were built before sound pollution levels came into play. Either way, mufflers and quieter bikes are sure to save your ears and keep your neighbours a little happier! OBSCURED TURNING SIGNALS Via Victory Only Knowing what other manoeuvres other road users are about to make is important. It can prevent accidents and makes Gary in his huge truck less likely to tail gate you for 5 blocks... However, if a bike has some stealth level indicators that are hard to see, it can be difficult to know its intentions, whether it’s indicating or not. Having turning signals that are hidden, like in the image above, can cause some serious problems on the road.

A Restoration that’s purely Academic! — And it makes you feel great

By MARK WHITEHOUSE Throughout my travels around this fine country, I am fortunate enough to meet a wonderful array of diverse and interesting people. Some of these people amaze me, some captivate me, some intrigue me and some even surprise me, but very few manage to truly inspire me. On first meeting Graham Prosser you would be forgiven for thinking he is a quiet, unassuming gentleman. However, the more you engage in conversation the more you begin to realize that there is far more to Graham than meets the eye. We first met in a motorcycle showroom where we exchanged pleasantries as we browsed through the latest machines on offer. I quickly discovered that Graham was, in fact, a High School teacher with a passion for motorcycles. Graham’s love of motorcycles manifests itself in his ownership of two vintage Hondas. My curiosity aroused, I wanted to know more about Graham. Slowly, but surely, the story that unfolded was nothing short of wondrous. Graham has been a teacher now for eleven years, and he teaches English and Social Sciences at Clarkson Secondary School, Mississauga. His passion and dedication to teaching made him wonder what else he could be doing to help the students. Graham had been coaching kids outside the classroom, and became increasingly concerned about those kids who were not connecting to the school in a positive way. He shared his concerns with his work colleague Adam Sembay - another keen motorbike rider - and, together, they struck upon the idea of rebuilding a motorbike with the students. They felt that this could be used as a means to engage the students more effectively with the school, whilst stimulating a desire to learn. Graham and Adam prepared an outline plan and they decided to present this to the school Principal. Initially, neither Graham nor Adam were particularly hopeful of getting the plan approved. This was because they needed some funds and the project wasn’t part of the school curriculum. However, the Principal (Mary Zammit) instantly loved the idea. More importantly, Mary was fully prepared to lend her full support to such a creative idea. With that in mind, a small budget was immediately set aside. In June 2018, Graham managed to find an old donor bike for the project. This was a 1981 Honda CB750 that was in bits. The engine was out of the frame, but it did turn over, and all of the other parts seemed to be there - albeit in various dif-

ferent states of repair. It was decided that the restoration would take place during school lunch times, and work started in September 2018. Pretty quickly, Graham and Adam managed to spark the imagination of a dozen students (aged between 14 and 17 years old) - all of whom were willing to join in with the project. With limited resources and a modest budget, Graham was forced to use a lot of his own personal tools. With the project gathering momentum, Graham secured the support of some third parties. Generous contributions were received from Cone Engineering, who provided some parts; and Steel Town Garage, who provided tyres and accessories at cost price. Canadian Tire also made a small contribution. Graham and Adam used their connections within the motorcycle world, and this prompted Yamaha Canada to get involved. Yamaha Canada’s Sam Calautti organized a field trip for the students to visit their head office. The trip was a resounding success with the students, during which they were shown the business side of the motorsports industry. The students were also exposed to the many career options available throughout Yamaha Canada. To top it all, Yamaha donated a 2017 R6 prototype motorbike (non-runner). This R6 now resides, as a centre-piece, within the front office area at Clarkson High School. This has helped enormously to raise the profile of the project and the school overall. During the course of the restoration of the Honda, Graham and Adam encouraged the students to make all the decisions, solve all the problems and take full ownership of the project. Throughout the project the students gained valuable experience of working as a team, took great pride in their work and they all shared in the sense of achievement. As the various elements of the motorbike were restored, the students were shown how each individual component worked. This gave the students a practical knowledge of mechanics, together with an appreciation of what it takes to build a motorcycle. As the restoration progressed, the students became increasingly engaged - not just with the project but also with school life. Graham told me that throughout the process, barriers were broken down between teacher and student and this facilitated open dialogue. This provided a superb environment for communication that gave the students the opportunity to talk about their aspirations and dreams, whilst also building their confidence. By having the students on the project during lunch times, Graham noticed that they became more and more committed to their own education. CONTINUED TO PG.20

A Restoration that’s purely Academic! — And it makes you feel great

This resulted in tangible improvements in the students class attendance as well as their grades. The school had a fund-raising event scheduled for May 2019, so Graham and Adam decided that the motorbike must be ready by then. The plan was to auction off the finished motorbike during that fund-raising event. The motorbike was completed just in time for the auction. It stimulated a great deal of interest and the bidding was intense. In the end, the winning bidder was actually a former student of the school. Graham, Adam and the students were thrilled with the outcome. Amazingly, the motorbike returned a modest profit, and the proceeds were donated to charity. Achievements It is undeniable that the restoration of the old Honda CB750 was an unmitigated success. For anyone who has ever embarked on a project to restore a motorcycle, you will know only too well about the challenges and unforeseen difficulties that can arise. Imagine then trying to do that restoration with a group of students with no prior

mechanical experience, who are all learning as they go. The fact that the project was completed at all, with limited time and resources, is truly remarkable. There are so many aspects of this that are immensely positive. First and foremost, the students found an outlet for their creativity and learning, and one that they could really relate to. Bear in mind that this was a completely optional programme, that formed no part of the school curriculum, and yet all of the students involved became totally committed to it. The project also resulted in the students showing marked improvement in their academic results, in conjunction with increased attendance levels. That, in and of itself, is justification for making the project an on-going activity. Next, its worth saying that the whole experience has benefitted the students enormously. It exposed the students to the world of work and helped them actively consider their career options. This was achieved in no small part through the involvement of Yamaha Canada. One could even go so far as to say that the project bridged the gap between school life and career. In short, Graham’s initiative has helped the students to be far better prepared for their ongoing education and, ultimately, the world of work.

For me, the project is confirmation of how a group of dedicated individuals, with a great idea, can all come together to achieve something truly remarkable. What next? For this current school year, Graham intends to expand the project to include more students. Three donor bikes have already been sourced. The first is a 1984 Yahama YZ125. The second is a Suzuki Madura - which has been donated by a former student and who was clearly inspired by the project. The third is a 1977 Honda CB750K, which was donated by another school. Graham and his colleagues also intend to extend the scope of the project this year. All of the students who participated last year showed tangible improvements in their academic performance. This year, Graham and the team will start to gather as much data as possible in order to measure the extent of the academic improvement. Not only will this prove the success of the project it will also secure its’ ongoing future. Maybe Graham’s successful blueprint can be rolled out in other schools across Canada? One thing is for sure … Graham can’t do this all on his own. He needs as much support as we can give him. There are, perhaps, so many ways that we can provide some practical help. We could

donate tools; provide old motorcycle parts, offer some of our time and expertise; make a monetary donation; or even donate our own unfinished cafe racer projects that are gathering dust in the garage … the list goes on. Maybe there’s a blogger out there, who wants to document the project(s) and increase awareness. There could even be a marketing expert who wants to lend their support. Maybe someone wants to replicate this project at their own kids’ school … Who knows? On a final word, I would personally like to thank Graham for inspiring me. It’s rare indeed to meet someone so dedicated to their profession who has found a way to overcome the challenges of their industry. Isn’t it reassuring that there are the ‘Grahams’, the ‘Adams’ and the ‘Marys’ who are able to identify creative solutions and are prepared go that extra mile!
