INDUSTRY NEWS

New Ninja 400 Spotted The forthcoming replacement for the Ninja 300 was caught on film by a local Milwaukee TV news crew at several spots throughout the city where the streets had been closed for filming. The new Ninja closely resembles the existing 300 model in terms of suspension and brakes, but other details like frame geometry are hard to make out. It does not appear to be the Ninja 400R chassis, which was introduced in 2011 and sold in Canada and New Zealand. The bike is likely cousin to the Z650 and Ninja 650. The 400cc engine is reportedly a new power plant however, and unrelated to the current Ninja 300 mill which dates back to the GPZ250 of 1983. Or the Ninja 250R, introduced in 1986, which granted sportbike status to thousands of young and underfunded riders worldwide. The new Ninja 400 promises to be a far more sophisticated instrument, in terms of power, handling, speed, and instrumentation than the aging 300. Speculation is already making the rounds that both Yamaha and Honda are bringing some new muscle to the small-bore bike segment, a segment that is enjoying increased interest. Since KTM has already shown some level of interest in this category with the release of the Duke 390, we’re confident that the light-middleweight class will continue its ascending curve. It seems that more people have been discovering, or re-discovering, that motorcycling fun doesn’t require 100plus horsepower and a large investment in maintenance, tires, insurance, etc. Smaller is often better. As yet there is no word from Kawasaki on the timeline or price for the Ninja 400. However, we can confidently predict that it will be available in green.

scott macdonald EDITOR

No matter what you do in life, there are only two ways from which you will learn and gain experience. The ‘easy way’ and the ever popular ‘hard way’. I don’t know why so many people choose to do things the hard way, It just does not make sense, why go through the trouble? Since I don’t have an answer to that question, lets talk a little about making life easier for yourself. For many, many years, I have always tried to provide good advice to novice riders. I have preached about taking safety courses and educating yourself about gear, proper gear. Not the fashion crap sold at many tradeshows which is most often not even real leather, usually synthetic garbage made to look like leather. Ok, lets stop right here, this is a good opportunity for an ’easy way’ lesson. If the leather gear doesn’t cause you a hernia when you lift it, it’s probably garbage and should be avoided, also if the price tag on any riding gear looks too good to be true, it’s probably garbage, move on. I have never found a quality jacket – one that will actually protect you for less than $300-$400. Remember that you get what you pay for – you have heard it from your parents all your life and it happens to be true. If you do choose the hard way and try to save a few bucks, synthetic leather when sliding on asphalt at 80kph has the abrasion resistance of a wet paper towel – enjoy your time in the emergency room. Recently my son completed a rider safety course, not because his old man (me) is the editor of this newspaper or told him to go through the right process to achieve his M2 license. He finally decided he would rather live and learn how to ride properly and safely, partially because he is a new dad, but mostly because he has grownup and understands their are consequences associated with doing bad things on a motorcycle. Those things are usually due to a lack of training, inexperience and that voice in your head that says you are invinceable and you can do anything. Its taken him

The Hard Way

three painful‘hard way’lessons to finally figure that out. But, he did pass his course and now he knows how to avoid concrete walls, guard rails and the like. He also knows the value of quality gear, he spent some time in emergency having gravel picked out from under his skin from two thirds of his body and now is scarred for life, he was one of the lucky ones. There, ya go! - lesson learned! I also often speak about buying a motorcycle that fits your ‘today’ skill level. I do realize most people ignore my advise and go for the biggest motorcycle their friends approve of. Why? I dunno, so here comes another ‘easy way’ lesson. If you are a new rider, hopefully you have just taken the safety course. So what does that mean to you? It means you have spent 16 hours on a 125 cc bike learning techniques which you have practiced about a dozen times each, so that you could graduate up to an M2 class license. Do you really feel you have the skills you need to ride the 401? If you answered no, then what makes you think you can handle 1,000 cc’s of insane torque after just 16 hours (seat time) on a tired 125 cc training bike? Not all motorcycles are created equal. For example, a 250 cc sport bike has enough power to raise the front wheel off the ground while a 250cc cruiser will NEVER be able to – to be clear, I am not advocating one over the other. Choosing a bike that is too large can get you into serious trouble quickly, with 16 hours training the outcome is often not good. If you acquire a much smaller bike and use it to master the riding techniques you’ve just learned, chances are you will more than likely live long enough to move up incrementally to your dream bike. Riding a smaller bike is not embarrassing, but riding a motorcycle you can’t handle into a guardrail or the back of someones car or dropping your bike at your local coffee stop. Especially if the friends who convinced you to buy the ‘Big’ bike are riding with you – who, by the way, probably started out riding on a much smaller bike. A

motorcycle dealership will take into consideration many factors to help you determine a bike that fits. But be honest with yourself, do your own research and be prepared, and above all don’t let anyone pressure you in a bike that doesn’t fit you skill level. Lastly, I have to admit I am not above a lesson or two myself. Years ago when I took my safety course, I thought I knew it all too. I could handle the little 125 like a seasoned pro. My instructor knocked me down a peg or two over that weekend more than once, as a result I took away some advise that has saved my life but there is one lesson in particular I will never forget. His words to us were “...if you don’t think you can make the corner, push harder” in reference to the push steering technique. As it turned out, early on in my first couple of seasons, like everyone, I was anxious to mix it up on the twisties. A friend asked if I wanted to meet him in Parry Sound to ride the amazing roads there, I couldn’t get there fast enough. Riding those roads are a bikers wet dream, corner after corner with the added benefit of spectacular scenery, and about an hour into our ride came my lesson. I was warned about a special corner which not only dropped in elevation but was a decreasing radius. I was also told that I would be warned about it as we approached so that I could slow down. Without warning, following my friend, we entered into the corner at the posted limit. The further I got into the corner the tighter it got, I was leaned over as far as I thought I could, hard on both brakes and with the heel of my boot grinding away on the asphalt the bike began to drift closer to the center line towards the headlights of an approaching car in the other lane. The only reason I am able to tell you this is because at that moment, the only thing that was going through my mind was “…if you don’t think you can make the corner, PUSH HARDER”. Thanks for that lesson Art.

ZERO Recall

Zero Motorcycles has recalled certain 2017 S ZF6.5, S ZF13.0, DSP ZF13.0, and SR ZF13.0 motorcycles due to turnsignal issues. This is the second recall on 2017 Zero Motorcycles; the first was due to ABS issues. The recall notice states that if a turn signal stops working, the turn signal flasher may not change its flash rate, which is intended to alert the operator. The Safety Recall Report states, “On June 5, 2017, Zero Motorcycles’ Quality team became aware of flasher units on the production floor that did not behave according to regulatory requirements. Through further research, it was determined that a manufacturing defect within a specific lot of these flashers was responsible for this condition, and that Zero Motorcycles’ Production team began using this lot on May 22, 2017. Once this condition was identified, Zero Motorcycles began screening flashers, so that no additional non-compliant units were shipped starting June 22, 2017. “On July 7, 2017, Zero Motorcycles completed its internal investigation with regards to the implications of this concern and concluded that the subject population should be recalled. Zero Motorcycles executive management considered this information and determined that a program should be conducted to remedy this condition. Zero Motorcycles is not aware of any accidents or injuries caused by this condition.” Zero will notify owners and dealers will test the motorcycle’s flasher, replacing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on, or before July 28, 2017.

BMW Recalls 14,626 Motorcycles BMW Motorrad has recalled approximately 14,626 of its 2014-2017 BMW R 1200 GS and BMW R 1200 GS Adventure motorcycles due to fork issues. BMW Motorrad says the bike may experience incidents of momentary extreme stress at the fork stanchions (top of fork). If this happens, a gap could develop at the fork plug that connects the steering bar with the fork, causing stanchion failure. The motorcycle fixed fork tube may separate from the pressed-in seal plug that secures the tube to the upper triple clamp. If the fork tube detaches from the sealing plug, the handling and stability of the motorcycle will be affected, increasing the risk of a crash. The defect notice states, “A rattling noise will be heard and/or an oil leak will be noticed. The pressed in seal plug can loosen in case of an incident with momentary extreme stress without notice of such damage to the user.” BMW will notify owners, and dealers will add an additional fixed fork tube bush. A fork that is sufficiently damaged will be replaced with a new part. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall is to begin September 1, 2017.

BMW Motorcycles Hits Sales Record in the First Half of 2017

The internet has been abuzz lately with the report that Harley-Davidson sales are slumping. Many outlets reporting the fact that millennials aren’t buying Harleys as doom-andgloom for the motorcycle industry as a whole. The story is a little different at BMW Motorrad. The Bavarian company’s motorcycle division has hit a record high in the first half of 2017, selling 88,389 bikes—a significant, 9.5 percent increase over the same time period in 2016. This is no fluke: it’s the fifth consecutive year that BMW Motorrad has boosted their sales, and they’re on track for 2017 to be their best year ever. BMW Motorrad general director Stephan

Schaller said in a press release, “For all of us at BMW Motorrad it is a great pleasure and a confirmation of all our efforts that our customers continue to show us that we are on the right track with our model initiative.” The sales boost comes thanks mostly to the “travel enduro” R1200GS and its Aventure variant, which saw a 17.3 percent sales increase for a total of 17,159 bikes moved. Another factor is the popular retro-modern R NineT lineup growing to stable of five bikes. Depending on how well received the upcoming K 1600 B Bagger is in the US, us Yanks could be accounting for even greater growth for BMW in the second half of this year.

Polaris reports second quarter results; Indian Motorcycle sales up 17 percent

Polaris Industries Inc. today reported second quarter 2017 sales of $1,364.9 million, up 21 percent, from $1,130.8 million for the second quarter of 2016. Adjusted sales, which excludes the impact from Victory Motorcycles® net sales for the second quarter of 2017, were $1,358.8 million compared to $1,130.8 million in the prior year period. The Company reported second quarter 2017 net income of $62.0 million, or $0.97 per diluted share, compared with net income of $71.2 million, or $1.09 per diluted share, for the 2016 second quarter. The reported net income included costs related to the wind down of Victory Motorcycles, certain Transamerican Auto Parts (“TAP”) integration and inventory step up costs, and manufacturing network realignment costs. Adjusted net income for the quarter ended June 30, 2017, excluding these costs, was $73.9 million, or $1.16 per diluted share. “Performance improved in many parts of our business during the quarter, particularly within our international and PG&A businesses. The powersports industry remained very competitive and headwinds persist, but we were encouraged by the return to growth in our Side-by-Side business and continued strength and aggressive share gains for Indian Motorcycles. In a weak motorcycle industry, Indian continues to demonstrate how a complementary combination of exciting new bikes, strong dealer execution and overall brand momentum can prevail. Dealer engagement is a corporate priority and from profitability to delivery and communications, the consistent progress we are making is augmenting our retail results. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are seeing results from the strong and sustainable improvements we are making to the fundamentals of our business, as we establish the foundation of a renewed growth platform,” commented Scott Wine, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Polaris Industries.

100th North American Law Agency to Use Zero Motorcycles Electric motorcycles provide the perfect solution for police agencies, offering low environmental impact, low maintenance, and lack of sound when approaching a patrolling situation. Zero Motorcycles knows these factors, and has developed a few models of specialized vehicles for the law enforcement and security agencies, such as the DSP, DSRP, FXP models. Agencies responded well throughout North America, and Zero Motorcycles hit a milestone this week when Vancouver Police Department in British Columbia, Canada, became the 100th fleet in North America to leverage Zero’s stealthy electric motorcycle lineup. “The Vancouver Police Department selected the Zero DSRP motorcycle for its stealth, low cost of operation, hassle-free maintenance, and minimal environmental impact,” said Inspector Loris Zuccato, Officer in charge of the Vancouver Police Department Traffic Section. “The motorcycles will be used on a daily basis on Vancouver city streets and off-road areas. The low-noise and zeroemissions production of the Zero DSRP makes it particularly valuable in patrolling areas such as public parks, trails, and for use during community events.” Zero developed the Zero DSP, Zero DSRP and Zero FXP models to meet the specific requirements of law enforcement and security agencies. Powered by the 100% electric Z-Force powertrain, Zero’s police motorcycles are a cost effective means to patrol a variety of terrain. In addition, they excel in areas where noise and exhaust are particularly noticeable, especially indoors. Patrol models are fully equipped with pursuit emergency lighting and sirens, safety components, and functional storage options for patrol items and emergency medical equipment. Zero Police Fleet in Vancouver BC“Zero’s police and security lineup have proven to be an invaluable tool for departments of all sizes, across a wide variety of use cases,” said Kevin Hartman, Zero’s Fleet and Authority Sales Director. “Crossing the 100th agency threshold is not only further validation of the tactical, operational and economic benefits of electric, but also only the beginning of what we expect to be the natural evolution of police and security fleets worldwide.” In addition to the Vancouver Police Department, Zero Motorcycles can be found in police and government fleets in 24 different states and 2 Canadian provinces. In North America, 15 university and college police departments have also chosen Zero as their vehicle of choice, and 12 departments have gone onto purchase additional motorcycles after their positive experiences with their initial purchase.

Harley-Davidson Inc. won’t have to pay a $3 million penalty related to a pollution settlement reached with the Obama administration regarding the sale of after-market ‘super tuners” devices that caused its motorcycles to emit too much pollution. Reuters reported Thursday that the U.S. Department of Justice is dropping the $3 million penalty that came on top of a $12 million civil fine. The money was intended to finance the retrofitting or replacement of wood-burning appliances with cleaner stoves. Milwaukee-based Harley-Davidson Inc. agreed in August 2016 to pay $15 million to settle the complaint from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Justice Department that the company manufactured and sold devices that increased motorcycles’ emissions of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides to levels in excess of federal clean air standards. The company, which did not admit wrongdoing under the settlement, also agreed to stop selling the devices and buy back the devices in dealerships’ inventory and destroy them, according to the EPA. The pollution settlement involved the sale of “Screamin’ Eagle Super Tuner and the Screamin’ Eagle electronic fuel injection Race Tuners” that increase performance but pollute the air at greater levels than what the company certified, violating the Clean Air Act. Harley-Davidson disagreed with the EPA’s contention that the company sold the products to dealers to allow motorcycles on public roads to violate the law. The super tuners, the company said, were used to calibrate motorcycles intended for off-road and closed-course competition. Harley said the tuners were designed and sold as an aftermarket, competition-only product used to adapt engine parameters for use with Harley-Davidson after-market equipment. The problem is that they can be a mounted to any street legal motorcycle as well. BUY BACK NOT COMPLETE The tuners are more specifically described as “Screamin’ Eagle Pro Super Tuners.” The agreement signed midAugust, required Harley to try to buy back all the tuners, at least from dealerships, and destroy them. The buyback appears to be falling short. A check on Google shows plenty of them for sale on auction sites like eBay. Prices ranged from $120 to $300. How-to websites and YouTube still have videos showing people how to set up and tune the Super Tuner. On Tuesday, the iconic motorcycle maker announced job cuts - 83 layoffs at its Menomonee Falls powertrain plant and 97 at its Kansas City assembly facility near Kansas City International Airport. The company has about 1,000 employees in Menomonee Falls and about 600 in Kansas City. Harley blamed the layoffs on a drop in sales — down 6.7 percent worldwide and down 9.3 percent in the U.S.

Your First Sturgis Biker Rally

Here are a few things you need to pack.

If “Talk Like A Pirate Day” has gotten too tame for you, then how about “Wigged-out Naked Tequila Drunk Biker Day?” If that sounds like your brand of crazy it’s time to plan a trip to the annual Sturgis Rally in the Badlands of South Dakota. Sturgis is America’s most iconic celebration of two wheeled motorsport. While it does have a certain reputation, the modern reality is that Sturgis has grown into America’s biggest pop-up community of motorcycling of all flavours. Yes, the air may still be thick with the smell of exhaust fumes mixed with tequila shots and the gamey body odour from thousands of hot, greasy revellers, but the Rally isn’t all just choppers, gypsies, tramps and thieves anymore. Modern-day Sturgis includes supercross races, road racing, drag racing, celebrity rides, women’s-only group rides and more organized parties than you can expect to reasonably sample in a week (do expect, however, to witness contests where half-naked biker mamas unsubtly bite hot dogs hanging from the sky). Part Burning Man, part halfway house, the Rally is one of the few places on earth where you’ll see the shiniest chrome custom choppers money can buy parked alongside the filthiest rat bikes imaginable. This is the place where celebrities and suburbanites let their hair down to mix with tramp bikers and certifiable outlaws. Where else can you hang out at places with names like Buffalo Chip and Crazy Horse and party with guys like Gypsy Joe and Buzzard Breath Bill? Plus, South Dakota is full of good ‘ol boy biker saloons (yes, they’re called “saloons” out that way) where you can sample some of the best knuckle sandwiches to be found in cowboy country. Love it or hate it, if you consider yourself a true motorcyclist you owe it to yourself to make the pilgrimage at least once. If you do go, recognize that getting into costume is all part of fitting-in and enjoying the spirit of the week. Even if you’re a pedicured investment banker from the big city you need to rock that black fire-snake-dagger-skull tshirt and go full dirtbag for once in your life. Packing for a successful Sturgis

Biker Rally week means bringing more than a howling wolf t-shirt, blue turquoise Navajo jewellery and a surplus German army helmet fitted with bull horns, however. With that in mind I’ve put together this list of the top 5 items to look your biker best and fit-in with comfort, protection and style. Cue the bonfire jumping. And, don’t stare at that nice man’s neck scar.

Maui Jim Stingray Polarized Sunglasses

Although helmets are optional in South Dakota, state laws require wearing sunglasses while riding, if your motorcycle doesn’t have a windscreen. If you’ve rented a Harley for the festivities, it’s highly likely your motorcycle won’t have one. During the Rally, the Sturgis Police Department enforces the rules of the road with additional attention and enthusiasm, so you probably going to want to give this one some thought. The eyewear rule also goes for evening riding and requires clear lenses. If you’re not already a four-eyed Poindexter, you’re going to need to purchase a second set of see-

throughs for riding after dark. When it comes to buying sunglasses, forget about the $7.00 flame-job wraparounds from the gas station and spend some grown-up money on proper optics for your trip. I’m often asked about how to justify spending more than $100 on something that’s probably going to end up in a ditch - along with the too many corn dogs and Patron shots you had with your bro-brahs. My answer is always the same – it’s all about the lenses. When you’re at home riding down the block for frozen yogurt, your choice of eyewear is arguably less critical. When you’re spending a week motorcycling in South Dakota, and basically living outside in the desert sun every day, it’s kind of a big deal. The main difference between useful eyewear and dollar-store garbage is vision quality, eye comfort and retinal protection from prolonged exposure CONTINUED TO PG. 10

to that burning yellow thing in the sky. Prolonged exposure to the sun is exactly what’s in store when you’re hanging out among the hoodoos for multiple days. That feeling of sand in your eyes? That’s not because you’ve been partying too hard with Bad Ass Floyd and his band of merry pranksters. It’s probably a nasty case of keratoconjunctivitis photoelectrica

urgis, I recommend you get yourself into a pair of Stingrays from Maui Jim. Since you’re going to be wearing your sunglasses everywhere, every single day, you’re going to want a polarized lens. Polarized lenses decrease the risk of dangerous distraction from glare while riding and reduces eye fatigue, which leads to headaches. Likewise, the lenses offer razor sharp optical clarity for clear, sharp, accurate vision, ensuring all-day comfort and decreasing the risk of making unwise judgements about potential tent-mates at last call. The Stingray also features wide temples, which I find useful for limiting dust in the eyes and reducing the amount of ambient light that leaks in during long days in very bright, highglare, desert conditions. The black frames are matched with a bluegray polarized lens for a look that says serious Sturgis street cred. Stylewise, the Stingray’s shape is pure old school biker cool with a look that is simultaneously classic and badass. Wear them with a sleeveless flannel shirt at the Rally, then come home and rock them with a suit on your way to the office.

some biker swag with a pair of black leather chaps. Wear these with a pair of ripped and faded jeans and you’ll look like you were on a first name basis with Indian Larry (would that be Indian, or Larry...?). Not only that, but chaps offer road rash protection in a style choice that is on-fleek for pretty much any party at Sturgis. Fashionwise, chaps are to the Rally what fur coats and fedoras are to the club. You’ll be dope, without the nope. I recommend the Outlaw 2.0’s from Poker Run. Made of heavyweight cow hide, Outlaw Chaps are form fitting to avoid flapping in the wind and incorporate stretch panels t ensure all day riding comfort. Full length side zips make these easy to take on and off and there are multiple pockets are available to keep everything close at hand. Another nice feature is that these chaps can be easily shortened, reducing the need for specialized leather work, for those of us not tall enough to ride this attraction.

River Road Traditional SquareToe Harness Boots

One key piece of riding gear that most people tend to overlook whether traveling or at home - is footwear. If you’re going to Sturgis, you’re going to the Badlands. Do you know what lives in the Badlands? Rattlesnakes. And, carnivorous Wolf Spiders. And, lets not forget our

from wearing sunglasses so cheap they came free in your morning box of Frosted Honey Charms. You might as well wrap duct tape around your face and cut two eyeholes in it for all the good that dollar store junk is doing for you. That’s why if you’re heading to St-

Nothing says just-offthe-jet Sturgis noob than the guy who didn’t take the time to bring the right gear. Maximize your enjoyment and your ability to fit-in and make new friends by picking up some new riding clothes that you can wear all day, on and off the bike. sneaky little friend, the Vaejovidae Paruroctonus. That means you’re going to need some boots. When it comes to boots to wear to Sturgis, look no further than the Traditional Squaretoe Harness boots from River Road. The key word here being “traditional,” because down Sturgis-way they don’t they don’t brook no truck with the likes of no hipsters and squids now. Style-wise you want to channelling that greasy, one-eyed drifter guy who sleeps in a dumpster over by the Piggly Wiggly; not the emasculated, lumbersexual barista who nicknamed himself Jake and spends all his time pouting on Instagram. With their chisel toe, raised heel and burly buckles and straps, these boots are designed for functional riding safety. Make no mistake; these are bona fide motorcycle boots, not cowboy boots for line-dancing and dive bar posing. River Road has constructed the Traditional with a steel shank, Goodyear welt and non-slip TPR outsole to offer protection on the bike and all-day wearability out of the saddle. This is exactly what you want for the Rally, where you’ll be desert touring by day and jumping bonfires by night.

Black Brand Axe Leather Motorcycle Vest

If you have to choose just one piece of gear to make your Rally experiences complete, make it a black leather vest. The black leather vest is to Sturgis what the navy blazer is to polite society - the one item clothing you can wear with anything, anywhere you’ll go. You can rock it with a white t-shirt when it’s hot and throw a denim jacket or hoody under it when the desert cools off at night. Not only that but it’s the perfect opportunity to look like that crosseyed crazy guy on that longrunning cable show about a group of rambunctious motorcycle hobbyists. Your First Sturgis Biker Rally vests, the Axe from Black Brand is so legit you’re going to want to give yourself a proper new biker name like Meathook or Hellfarter. The Axe vest has all the features a classic motorcycle vest should have, like top-grain leather construction, solid YKK® zippers, zippered exterior pockets, inside pockets and a full zippered inner. The full-length side lace-ups are simultaneously functional and badass, allowing you to adjust your vest size after eating too many corn dogs. The Axe was also made to be patched - literally - and is perfectly shaped to add a large flaming wolf-

dragon on the back, along with a DILLIGAF rocker and assorted pistons, skulls and other anti-social graphics. Once you get your Axe vest patched to perfection, you’ll want to run over it a few times with the car and then sleep in it for a few weeks before you go, just to establish the right patina and odour. Because nothing screams Sturgis noob like a shiny, spotless, patch-less vest.

Icon Chantilly Bandana

Complete your Sturgis look with

the Chantilly biker bandana from Icon. Full of win, the Dia de los Muertos-inspired graphics were conceived by ancient Olmec overlords on multi-day hallucinogenic vision-quests and feature a giant skull, interwoven within a psychedelic Deadhead paisley explosion. And who wouldn’t want to wear that? “$35 for a bandana” you say? Just goes to prove that the baddestlooking chopper dudes are all dental surgeons and otolaryngologists, right? Not even, because this is not just any wimpy, dime-store bandana. Unlike the teeny, sandpapery things you find at hipster pop-up stores, this huge bandana is cut in the old school style of the very stage coach robbers, outlaw gunslingers and other crooked cowboys that used to inhabit the very land Sturgis stands on. Big enough to cover your whole face or head, wrap this bandana around your ugly mug gunslinger style while you’re riding through the desert, then rock it around your neck

like Pete Fonda would have done in Easy Rider and be the most stylish hombre in the joint. You’ll strike a pose so bad they’re going to call you Hoodoo Hank. Plus, the psychoactive graphics are perfect for distracting the peyote-tripping posse of biker brethren over there in the corner that seems to think you’re a giant demon-salamander in need of squashing. All of a sudden you can do 35 bucks all, day, long! Am I right? If that doesn’t work out for you, it’s also the perfect size to make a triangular bandage.

david heron come to expect.

CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Well, here we go again. Dave is going to rant. As you know, I have a dumb hobby, I rescue and restore old Kawasaki triples. These are the 2 stroke motorcycle equivalent of the Barbarian hoards who overran the civilized world of ancient Rome and plunged the world into the Dark Ages. They are loud, smoky, and can shake the fillings out of your teeth just casually riding around. In other words, they may be the epitome of what motorcycling is all about. Bad ass , rebellious, anti- social and downright annoying. I love them. I have told you about the trials and tribulations of bringing these bikes back to life. Searching for parts that have not been available for 40 years, negotiating with people who want to retire on the back of your obsession to complete a restoration, paying ridiculously high postage fees and then having to sweeten the pot and deplete the bank account further by paying customs fees for used parts. These are the everyday things that I run into on a regular basis and , in truth, have

A Wrench in the Works

I bored you, or even possibly entertained you, with the saga of the Bitsa bike. Bits from here and bits from there and the eventual completion of said bike. To be completely honest with you, that bike took more time and investment than it would ever be worth. I also told you how I found the Holy Grail of Kawasakis and thus realized a dream of ownership but the ugly truth is that I could not afford to keep both bikes so the Bitsa had to go to finance the work for the Grail. So, what do you do to sell a 46 year old bike that had been rescued from the crusher just in the nick of time? There are two avenues to go, ebay and Kijiji and I went to both. I may have been deluding myself. No, let’s be serious, I was deluding myself thinking that I could get my money out of the sale but I put a reserve on the ebay auction. The bids did come but they fell short of the reserve. Reality sucks . The bike sold and I covered , or almost covered, the actual cash outlay. If I sat and figured out how many hours I had spent working on it , I think that I would be getting somewhere be-

tween one and two cents an hour for labour. That brings up a statement that an older friend of mine from the marine industry used to tell me. How do you make a million dollars in the industry? Start with two million. I have to keep telling myself that this is a hobby and that I enjoy doing it. It is necessary to repeat that numerous times so as to convince me of my own sincerity. Anyway, that is not where I am going with this story. I know, get to the point then. So, I get a response to my Kijiji ad from some guy. It wasn’t a question like how many miles or is the price negotiable? It’s him saying “ pity about the decals” I guess this guy has no other useful things to do but offer critiques on things for sale that he has no interest in buying . Like I really need some dude offering his opinion on something that has nothing to do with him and, I told him so. I did not reply to his email with expletives although I did utter some while I was working at my keyboard. I thought that that would pretty well end it but, oh no. He answered saying that the decals were misplaced

here from Europe. He has all kinds of connections over there still and has a business supplying restored bikes to rich Europeans who have wads of cash and are not afraid to spend it. But, they want perfection for their big buck outlays and demand it. This particular guy thought that my asking price was reasonable and admitted that he could get much more than that from the aforementioned Europeans. I had to give him a complete list of work done including receipts which ended up being a tedious, pain in the butt job. That’s not to say that I didn’t have all that information but scanning everything took a lot of time. I keep a file on every bike and actually , when I add up all the outlays after close to a year of collecting , it always brings a tear to my eye. The tear is usually followed closely by head shaking and swear words questioning why I am so stupid to spend this kind of money and whether it was worth it in the first place. Usually, it is not. Anyway, I have explained that I make riders and not “trailer queens” that sit unused and shiny in garages and get taken to shows and talked about. These concourse restorations cover every little thing you can think of. All new spokes, exhausts, chrome and paint. Who cares if it runs, it looks good. I truly believe that these bikes, actually all bikes, are made to be ridden and enjoyed not only by the lucky rider but also by those who remember way back when and can reminisce about themselves or a family member or friend who used to ride one. The greatest thing about riding a vintage bike is the crowd that is attracted to

it when you stop. They are like a beacon bringing in all kinds of different people and their memories. “ We used to wheelie everywhere” “ My older brother had one of these, they were really fast.” Good memories of better times when we were young and stupid or young and fearless. Memories that are rekindled by simply seeing a brightly coloured chunk of metal and a lingering, hovering cloud of 2 stroke smoke. Yes, good times and great memories. But that is not what I want to talk about now. Let’s get to these people with the thick wallets who demand these perfect old bikes. In many cases the bike after restoration is better than what they were when brand new. Kawasaki 500’s sold for a thousand bucks. They did not come with stainless spokes and deep chrome fenders. They were very base. I have spoken before about these guys. They have no interest in getting down and dirty. I think I told you before about someone who called about one of my bikes and asked if it was perfect and ready to show. He said that he wanted to unpack it and take it to a show right away. He actually said that he wanted people to come up to him and say. “ What a cool bike you have.” He was willing to pay for that privilege. That is just something that I can’t understand. They want me to toil for hours and even days and months to make them feel good about how they were able to buy someone else’s vision and sweat. Back to the story at hand. I was asked to take pictures of what was actually wrong with it rather than what was right. I took them of the scraped head-

light ring, the bits of rust on the front spokes, the unshiny but solid mufflers and the rectifier/regulator modification. This actually replaces the very weak original Kawasaki parts with Ford automotive units which are both cheaper and stronger. I have been running this mod invented by a friend and mechanic much wiser than me for years on my own bike with good results. The potential buyer thought that he could get more and would pay more, if I added to the investment by adding more new parts. I must admit that I did consider doing this. However, more thinking brought me to the conclusion that I would rather sell to someone who would ride and appreciate the bike for what it was. It’s not that I am telling you that I didn’t consider it but at the end of the day, I didn’t want to put out more money to be told that there was another thing that he wanted done. I talked to the agent with all the connections and said that I didn’t think it was worth my while and that I would not go any further. He said that he would contact his potential buyer in Europe and see if he still wanted it with all its deficiencies. The wallet guy said, no, he wanted something perfect. What can I say, each to his own. As it turned out, I did sell the bike. It went to someone who wants to ride it . In my opinion, a far more suitable solution for all involved. I had to put it on lay away for a while but I did receive a deposit. Soon, there will be more room to move around in the garage, a happier LSW and , who knows, maybe a new project. Oops, I think I may have promised to cool the projects for a while.

and that my asking price did not reflect that terrible mistake. Now, the truth about Kawasaki production in the early ‘70s was that the decals were placed by hand on the assembly line and there were any number of different placements. My painter, who is the only person besides me who works on my bikes, is not an expert on bikes. He placed the decals a little far back on the tank but managed to beautifully follow the arch of the tank and the contour at the back. He also did an absolutely great paint job and clear coat finish. The results were nothing short of spectacular and I was more than pleased. But this guy didn’t stop there. He responded again saying that I should scrap that paint job, tear off the decals and start again. It’s like I was going to listen to him and spend more money on something that was more than acceptable to please this anally retentive person who offered only criticism. Then he told me do what he said and then ask even less money for the finished product. By this time I was fuming. The LSW tried to calm me down but I was too far gone. I made a couple not-so-nice comments about him living in his Mom’s basement and being a front-running contender for dufus of the year. That’s not really what I said but I am trying to be polite. At any rate, I did not answer him anymore and he did not offer up anything further. I have gotten a little ahead of myself reliving this wonderful witty banter back and forth with Mr. Know it All. The bike had not sold yet. But, another response had come in. This time it was a guy from Quebec who had moved

We explore the dim past of Sears and Roebuck’s first mail-order motorcycle. If you’re a rider of a certain age like me, you probably remember the Sears catalog. If you don’t, let me give you a quick primer on it. Oh, and before we really get deep into this story let me give you a little caveat: information about Sears motorcycles is scarce and spotty at best. The bikes were sourced from numerous different manufacturers over the years, most of them defunct at this point, and early Sears records were lost or destroyed in the slow decline, reorganization, and sad breakup of the company. For my primary sources, I was limited to short articles from How Stuff Works, dusty old coffee table books, and circa 1998 websites kept by weird, obsessive, old graybeards out on the fringes of the internet. Many of these are, as you might expect, confusing and often contradictory about the whys and wherefores of these obscure old bikes. What I’m saying here is that I’ve done my best to get my facts right but I may make some mistakes due to the quality of sources. If you have a Sears bike, or know someone who does, please feel free to correct me on our facebook page. Also, bring it over so I can ride it. Now let’s get to it. From the mid-1890s until 1993, Sears and Roebuck Co. produced a home goods catalog in which customers could mail order anything from clothes to tools to cars to entire homes. They pioneered mail order at a time when department stores were new, and put comfort and style within reach of nearly every North American. One can trace the coming of many technological innovations through the pages of mail order catalogues. Electricity, modern indoor plumbing, labour-saving devices such as the washing machine -- mail order catalogues bear witness to all of these life-altering changes. In 1909, with internal combustion technology on the rise and the horseless carriage sweeping the nation, the company decided to get in on the newfangled motorbike craze and introduced the Sears Auto-Cycle. The first generation Auto-Cycle was a rebadged Thiem supplied by the Joerns-Thiem Motor Company out of St. Paul, Minnesota. It had a simple, sturdy, 19.5-cubic-inch four-stroke single that produced a whopping 4 horsepower, a single speed transmission, battery ignition system, a leather belt final drive, and a rear coaster brake. Pretty standard equipment for the time. If you were a high roller, you could spring for an optional acetylene headlight for night riding and a magneto ignition system. In 1910, Sears added Thor motorcycles – built by the Aurora Machine Company from Illinois – with bigger 29 cu-in engines to its lineup. The Thiem and Thor machines were

Sears’ entry-level bikes – small, affordable, and modestly equipped – and soldiered on largely unchanged until Sears stopped selling bikes around the beginning of World War I. In probably 1912, Sears released three new bespoke motorcycles to its lineup: The Deluxe, The Invincible, and The Dreadnaught. These all-new bikes were designed and built in conjunction with Chicago’s Excelsior Cycle Company, not to be confused with the more famous Chicago-based Excelsior Motor Manufacturing and Supply Company that made the Excelsior Super X. They featured “DeLuxe”brand single and V-twin engines built by the F.W. Spacke company from Indianapolis, Indiana, Schebler carbs, Mussleman hubs, new-fangled chain final drives, and a battery-powered ignition system. The DeLuxe was the smallest of the three, equipped with a Spacke “Big Five” single that was similar to the older Thiem and Thor models. The “Big Five” displaced 30.5 cu in and made around 5 hp. It weighed somewhere between 220 and 300 pounds (I’ve seen at least four different weights listed), and was relatively fast for its day with a stated top speed of nearly 50 mph. Like its older cousins, the DeLuxe could be optioned with acetylene lights and, new for 1911, a high-tech geardriven speedometer run from the rear wheel. They could even be optioned with a Bosch magneto ignition, which was some cutting edge equipment in those days. Depending on options, the DeLuxe could run as much as $220 – about $5,300 nowadays. The Invincible and Dreadnought – also known as the DeLuxe Invincible and DeLuxe Dreadnought due to the Spacke “DeLuxe” Engine they used – were the big twins of Sears’ bike lineup. I’ve also seen these bikes referred to as the Invincible Seven and Dreadnought Nine so, you know, pick your poison. The Invincible was equipped with a roughly 60 cu in engine that produced 7 hp, hence the Invincible Seven name. The bigger Dreadnought had a 70 cu in Spacke motor that made, you guessed it, 9 hp, and was Sears’ top of the line motorcycle. Like the DeLuxe single, the Sears V-

Sears got out of the motorcycle business in 1916 due to, well, reasons. In my research I couldn’t find a solid answer as to why they quit selling bikes, but it was probably some combination of financial issues and the onset of WWI. They did, however, continue to sell motorcycle accessories, clothes, and helmets. By the 50s though, Sears felt that it was time to get back into the motorcycle trade and introduced a whole new line of badge-engineered Sears bikes. Stay tuned for next months issue of The motorcycle Times where we see Sears’ second attempt at mail-order bikes, this time by badgeineering Austrian and Italian bikes for the North American market. Sears felt it was time to get back into the motorcycle trade and introduced a whole new line of badge-engineered Sears bikes. The motorcycle industry had

changed a lot since the days of Theim and Thor and the mighty Spacke-powered Dreadnought. Out of the hundreds of American motorcycle marques that existed in 1915, only Harley-Davidson and Indian remained, and by the early ‘50s Indian was circling the drain. Across the pond though, postwar

Europe was experiencing a motorcycling boom. Bikes were easy to get and cheap to both produce and run during the bleak days of postwar rationing and recovery, so people flocked to them in droves. Small bikes – scooters especially – CONTINUED TO PG. 20

twins could be equipped with speedometers, magneto ignitions, acetylene lights and two-speed transmissions. In 1913, an Invincible would set you back $235, just $15 more than the DeLuxe single. The Dreadnought, with its two extra horsepower, ran $250 or about $6,100 in 2017 dollars. For their time, and despite the fact that they were largely badge engineered Frankenstein parts bin bikes, Sears motorcycles had a reputation for quality, ruggedness, and reliability. They were competitively priced – about $50 cheaper than equivalent Harleys or Indians – and you couldn’t beat the convenience. There aren’t many of these old warhorses around today. My sources suggest that there may be as few as 10 of the Spackepowered twins left in the world, most of them Dreadnoughts, and I couldn’t find any estimates on other surviving models.

Marquez returns to reign the Sachsenring

Szoke sweeps Superbike after triumphant Sunday in Nova Scotia Jordan Szoke rode his Mopar Express Lane/Motovan BMW S1000RR to an emphatic win in Sunday’s fifth Feature race of the Mopar CSBK Canadian Superbike Championship, presented by Honda Canada, at Atlantic Motorsport Park in Shubenacadie, NS. Top qualifier Szoke (Lynden, ON) was challenged at the start of the scheduled 22-lap feature by eventual runner-up Kenny Riedmann (Belfountain, ON), but he passed the Kawasaki rider before turn 2 and started building a gap to the rest of the field. The defending Canadian Superbike champion was ahead by 10.55 seconds on the 17th lap when a two-rider crash resulted in a red flag, stopping the race and making the results official. It was Szoke’s fourth victory of the 2017 season. “I was spent. I’m not gonna lie,” said a visibly fatigued Szoke during the podium presentation. “It’s the most physically demanding track we go to in North America, for sure. You’re white-knuckling it the whole time... it might look easy, but it’s definitely not.” Szoke set the fastest lap in every practice, qualifying and race session during the weekend, including a fast lap at 1:07.769 in Sunday’s Feature race. “We don’t stop working,” Szoke noted about his dedicated crew. “We keep pushing forward; we’ll look at this race

and go forward from here. That’s what you’ve got to do — these guys behind us are pushing hard, and we’ve got to stay on our game. Now we have to win a Championship.” Riedmann and his Sturgess Cycle/Liqui Moly Kawasaki ZX-10RR looked strong in the opening laps, but couldn’t keep pace with Szoke in the long run and settled for second. “I felt a lot more comfortable at the end of the race,” said Riedmann, commenting that a new fuel map and shock setting smoothed the bike out for Sunday’s race. Superbike veteran Michael Leon put in a valiant effort on his Royal Distributing BMW, just 0.371-seconds shy of a podium spot in fourth. Fellow Quebec native and second-year Pro Samuel Trepanier (StIsidore, QC) followed yesterday’s fourthplace finish with a strong fifth in Sunday’s race on his Blysk Racing BMW. Rookie Pro Jacob Shaw-O’Leary (Falmouth, NS) scored a podium for the home crowd by finishing third in Pro Sport Bike after a poor start that put him near the back of the pack. The Pro Cycle Honda CBR600RR rider worked his way through the pack to earn his first Pro podium. The series heads to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, ON for the popular season finale double header on the weekend of August 18-20.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) has taken an incredible eighth win in a row at the Sachsenring, extending his run from the 125 World Championship to another year of the premier class – with all those wins from pole. It was anything but easy, however – with German rookie Jonas Folger (Monster Yamaha Tech 3) pushing the reigning Champion on home turf throughout the race in a stunning ride to his first podium. Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda Team) completed the podium to get back in contention following a more

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing take a double points finish with three ‘Bulls’ in play

It was a much-improved weekend for the new factory KTM project at the Sachsenring following a tough Dutch GP, and the three riders out on track – Pol Espargaro, Bradley Smith and wildcard and test rider Mika Kallio – all found huge positives. Espargaro took the team into Q2 from the first qualifying session and put in a stunning performance to line up seventh on the grid, then came home in the points as race day dawned dry. Smith also took points just behind his teammate, with wildcard Mika Kallio crossing the line in P16 and all three machines up in the battle: “the weekend was amazing for the project.” Mike Leitner, Team Manager MotoGP: “The weekend was amazing for the project, for KTM, for all three riders. We always had some highlights through all of the sessions for one of the three riders and in the end in the race, points for Pol after having a full on battle that was very important for him. We know we have to work hard but we must always be reminded we are in our rookie season and the long term target is obviously higher than ‘just points’ so this is a very good sign.

Round 7 – Pleasant Valley Motorsport Park, Truro, Nova Scotia The first of two stops in the Maritimes is this weekend’s Round 7 of the 2017 CMRC sanctioned Rockstar Energy Drink Motocross Nationals presented by Motovan at Pleasant Valley Motorsport Park in Truro, Nova Scotia. The Pleasant Valley race track returned to the national schedule last year after being absent

since 2002. The last two winners in the MX1 class there were Davi Millsaps and Canadian racing legend Jean Sebastien Roy.

MX1 Class

Rockstar Energy OTSFF Yamaha’s Matt Goerke comes into Round 7 as the points leader as he looks to capture

difficult Dutch GP. The summer break now awaits, with MotoGP next on track at the beginning on August. And the Championship? The reigning Champion has one hand back on the throne after his German GP win, now five points clear of key rival Maverick Viñales. Dovizioso is now third – one point behind Viñales as the upcoming Brno and Red Bull Ring shine with promise for Ducati. Rossi lurks in fourth, only another four points off, with Pedrosa still very much in the fight in fifth.

his third National Title. Goerke has just one overall win in 2017 but has had the red plate on his motorcycle since that victory at Round 3 in Calgary. Matt has been very consistent this year and only finished off the podium at the season opener. He was fourth in 2016 at Pleasant Valley. Rockstar Husqvarna’s Christophe

Pourcel sits second in the series standings and is only 8 points behind Goerke. Pourcel has three wins in 2017 and is the only rider in the class to have more than one overall win this year. Christophe is coming off a second overall last weekend where he won the final moto of the day but was only able to gain 1 point on the series leader.

Moto GP legend Angel Nieto in serious condition

Spanish 13-time world champion involved in an accident in Ibiza and being treated for head injuries in hospital Moto GP legend Angel Nieto has been seriously injured after he was involved in a road accident in Ibiza. Nieto is regarded as one of the greatest motorcycle racers of all time after a brilliant career that saw him lift 13 world titles. Nieto, 70-year-old, is in intensive care in hospital after being caught up in a horrific crash while out riding a quad bike. According to witnesses, he was hit from behind by a car being driven by a tourist on the Spanish holiday isle. Nieta was rushed to hospital with what medics have described as ‘serious head injuries’ after being launched from his quad. Reports in Spain say the national hero underwent a two-hour operation and is currently now in a serious but stable condition. Doctors are hopeful the injuries he suffered a not life threatening, and the family have asked for time for him to recover in hospital. Nieto is one of the most successful professional riders of all time, having won a total of 90 Grand Prix races during a career spanning 22 years. Despite never winning a world title on a 500cc, he has always been regarded by his peers as one of the most talented riders to have graced the sport. He won six world titles at 50cc, with a further seven coming in the 125cc class – including four successive championships between 1981-1984. Only two riders have won more Grand Prix than Nieto – Giacoma Agostini who leads the way on 122 and Valentino Rossi with 115.

Mail Order Motorcycles Sears and Roebuck first to sell motorcycles from a catalog CONTINUED FROM PG. 17

were in vogue and riders were buying new bikes as fast as Europe’s many manufacturers could crank them out. Sears had been selling Cushman scooters under their Allstate brand since 1948 and had been importing various Vespa models and selling them as Allstates since 1951. The company felt that maybe, with Indian locked in a death spiral and Harley-Davidson soldiering along making its big twins, there was a niche they could fill with smaller, more accessible motorcycles. Where to find them, though? The answer, apparently, was Austria. In 1954, Sears began importing motorcycles from Puch, an old and storied Austrian manufacturer that made bikes, mopeds, and scooters. From 1954 until 1966, Allstate-badged Puchs in a variety of engine displacements and trim levels graced America’s streets. They were rebadged as Sears motorcycles in ‘67, and continued as such until Sears stopped selling bikes in late 1969. In 1966, in an effort to expand their line of motorcycles, Sears started importing small-displacement four-stroke Gileras from Italy, which were sold under the Sears Motorcycle marque. When I started out writing this story, my plan was to do a little write-up on each of the bikes. Unfortunately for me, in the course of my research I discovered that there were roughly 85 million different Puch and Gilera models sold between 1954 and 1970. OK, that number may be an exaggeration, but you get my point. The sources are maddeningly confusing and contradictory, often vague, and, as far as I can tell, a lot of the different models were nothing more than trim levels with different names. So, in an attempt to get this story done before I turn 60, I decided to focus on the two most iconic of Sears’ mid-century bikes: the Allstate/Sears 250SGS and the Sears 106 Super Sport. Starting in 1954, Sears imported a slew of 125cc, 175cc, and 250cc Puchs from Austria for its Allstate motorcycle line. The 125 was a small, underpowered, primitive little thing with a twist-grip “rod shifter”, a fan-cooled two-stroke single, and a hardtail suspension – little better than a minibike or moped. The 175 was much better and more like a proper motorcycle, and was more powerful, more stylish, more advanced, and more robust than the 125. The 175 was sold in two trim levels – Standard and Deluxe – and was a pretty good seller for the catalog giant. On top of the pack was the 250, Sears’ top of the line machine and the bike I’ll focus on here. The Allstate 250 was a rebadged Puch 250SGS and was Allstate/Sears’ top of the line motorcycle for the two decades in which Sears sold bikes. The big bike was powered by a well-built and reliable

250cc air-cooled, two-stroke “twingle” that put down 16 whole horsepower through a four-speed gearbox with chain final drive. Wait, what? Twingle? What’s a twingle? A twingle, more commonly known as a split single, is a valveless two-stroke twin where both pistons share a common combustion chamber. In operation, one cylinder handles intake duties, the other exhaust duties, and they both squeeze together on the compression stroke. Weird, right? Supposedly, split singles have better exhaust scavenging, are overall more efficient, and run better at low RPMs than a standard two-stroke engine. The downside is that these engines are heavier, more complex, and more expensive to produce. Anyway, in the 250SGS – and in the 175 which also had a twingle in it – the cylinders were arranged fore and aft rather than side to side as they were in many split singles, and both the intake and exhaust ports were in the front cylinder. This made for a, uh, whimsical engine configuration where the carb was located at the left-front of the engine right next to the headers. Not an ideal arrangement, but it worked pretty well for Puch. Aside from the wierdo engine, the rest of the bike was pretty standard motorcycle fare. It had a hydraulic fork front end and a swingarm supported by two shocks in the rear, chrome laced wheels, drum brakes, a generator-driven electrical system, and a number of other standard features. Along with the bike, Sears sold a number of accessories for it like crash bars, pillion seats, extra lights, fiberglass panniers, etc. As for paint choices, catalog customers only had one color to choose from. According to my sources, the 250SGS came only in “Lustrous Maroon” for the first couple years on the market. Some time in the late 50s or early 60s, that color was discontinued and the bike was sold in gloss black with chrome highlights. The 250SGS sold for around $500 in the mid-50s – about $4,600 in 2017 dol-

lars – and could be purchased from the catalog on a payment plan with 10 percent down and monthly payments of $42 a month. The downside to all this convenience is that the bike came disassembled and packed in a crate, so actually getting to ride your new catalog-bought cycle required some elbow grease and mechanical know-how. As a way to spruce up their motorcycle offerings and inject some fire into their flagging bikes sales Sears began importing Gilera motorcycles from Italy in 1966. These bikes were badged as Sears Motorcycles since the company had recently stopped using the Allstate name. The most common model was the 106 Super Sport. Available for a cool $389 – a very affordable $2,800 today – the Super Sport was a small, zingy, agile little bike with a 106cc air-cooled, four-stroke single that produced nine screaming Italian horsepower and had a top speed of about 60 mph. It had a four-speed trans, drum brakes, and all the other standard features motorcycle buyers expected at the time. As you might expect, the Super Sport wasn’t a barn burner. The low-powered

engine and upright riding position made it more of a day-to-day runabout rather than a ton-chasing mini-cafe racer. For that, you had to shell out an additional Benjamin to get the SR124. The 124 was surprisingly quick and was fitted with a five-speed trans that got the 124cc engine’s 12 Italian stallions to the ground via a chain finaldrive. By all accounts, the 124 was a blast to ride, but they were pretty uncommon back in the 60s and are rare as hens’ teeth these days. Tens of thousands of these things were sold to the American public between 1953 and 1970. In 1954, Allstate/ Sears’ best sales year, nearly 10,000 250 twingles found new homes in America’s garages and barns. Unfortunately, sales steadily declined from there with a small spike in 1966 when the company dropped the Allstate marque and started selling the imported Gileras. By the late60s, increasingly rigorous environmental regulations and pressure from Japanese imports were too much for Sears to contend with. The company officially ceased selling bikes in 1969, bringing an end to nearly two decades of mail order motorcycles.
