Bond Rides a Honda Opening in theaters November 9, Skyfall, the twenty-third installment of the franchise, Daniel Craig hits two wheels again in the opening sequence which involves chasing henchmen on a motorcycle through Istanbul’s streets and rooftops. The motorcycles are modified and aged Honda CRF250R motocross bikes (with Bond’s steed sporting weirdly new looking fenders), and the filming environment was so tight, many of the moving shots were photographed using cameras attached to motorcycles riding alongside the action.

There’s an old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. Sometimes, as is the case with this particular story, a picture hides a thousand stories… As a young man in Brant County, Ont, Canada, Captain John Maus, MD, lived on
a farm before deciding to attend medical school at Toronto University. Like many of his fellow students who graduated at the outbreak of the Second World War, he joined the Medical Corps. Dr. Maus attended motorcycle courses on Indian and Harley-Davidson motorcycles at Camp Borden as part of all medical doctors’ basic training. When he arrived in England, he was is-

sued a Norton motorcycle. After arriving on the shores of Normandy, Captain Maus was put in command of a field hospital, and at the conclusion of WWII, he set up a medical practice in Windsor, Ontario. In and of itself, it’s an interesting little story; a snippit of Canadian history and a reference to someone we owe both our gratitude and see p. 3
