BETWEEN STARTING WORK ON THIS EDITION TO NOW WRITING THIS EDITOR’S NOTE (AN INDICATION OF OUR PROXIMITY TO OUR MAGAZINE’S NEXT EDITION RELEASE), SO MUCH HAS TRANSPIRED. AT THE OUTSET, WE TAKE THIS MOMENT TO CONVEY OUR DEEPEST CONDOLENCES AND PRAYERS TO THE FAMILIES OF THE BRAVE MEN WHO LOST THEIR LIVES AND HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY THE COWARDLY AND DASTARDLY TERROR ATTACKS IN PULWAMA.

As proud citizens of this country, we take this moment to unreservedly, passionately and committedly thank our armed forces who relentlessly, altruistically and brave heartedly fight for our safety by putting their own lives at risk. As we continue to see and hear stories of valor, fearlessness, heroism, and gallantry, it swells our heart with pride – an emotional wave that is running high and extreme in our country. Jai Hind! Now that we are here with our next edition, we cannot help but ruminate the uncanny timing of our issue “The Power of Love”. If there is one antidote to all the hatred, warmongering and empty bravado it has to be love. Contrary to popular belief, love need not necessarily be restricted to cuddling and caressing. It is not a sudden creation arising out of finding another individual. It has been deep seeded inside of us from the time we came into this world. For love is so basic in nature, that only when we express ourselves minus inhibitions of any kind can we truly feel fulfilled as human beings doing justice to ourselves – the humankind. Each time our issue hits the stands, we are inundated with messages from our readers, families, friends, brands and those from our fraternity. Amidst all the constructive feedback that we receive, the one that has been constant is that people are beginning to relate with Modish as the place for all their fashion and lifestyle needs. Truly, we are flabbergasted at the generosity that has come our way in such a short span of time. As we now look back at the time when we started with the innumerable brainstorming sessions for our fourth issue, we are humbled by what we have been able to put together for our readers. We have a vision, to be India’s leading fashion and lifestyle magazine, and we leave no MODISH MAGAZINE

stone unturned to be that. While each of our stories are extremely special to us, the Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, the cover story for this edition has been a milestone moment for the magazine. We are also extremely gratified and honored to soak ourselves in the colors of rainbow as we worked closely with the LGBTQ+ community to feature their stories and inter alia participate in the initiatives from the Lalit Group of Hospitality on spreading the message of rainbow love. Readers, we now hand over this labor of love and hard work to you, and hope you enjoy reading this edition as much as we enjoyed cre-

ating it. At the end of day, if there is one benchmark that we closely monitor and value, is the feedback from each one of you. We leave you with the promise of creating unique and exciting stories in our next edition. Until then our Readers, unleash the power of love within you for it can move mountains!

Lots of Love,

DUO! Story by ROMAN Cover story photo by Avinash Gowarika

Decades ago, at a chance encounter, two individuals met. Fast forward to a few years later, the individuals became a duo and the world calls them ABU JANI SANDEEP KHOSLA. You can almost hear an orchestra playing a symphony of timeless elegance and opulent grandeur in the milieu when that name echoes. MODISH MAGAZINE

The last one year gave us a sneak peek into some of the biggest weddings in Bollywood. From the fashion diva Sonam Kapoor to B-wood queen Deepika Padukone to the one on a global domination spree Priyanka Chopra, it could not have gotten bigger than this. While they all got married to different men at different times of the year, there was one thing common between all these leading women. No points in guessing this one – it was none other than the stalwarts of the fashion industry, AJSK. More recently, when Deepika Padukone shared her picture in Ivory and Gold Chikankari ensemble, it broke the internet in no time. She looked like a dream who walked straight into our Instagram handle from heaven. When Priyanka Chopra twirled in the patio in a multi-hued lehenga and a crop top with flamenco sleeves, it set the internet on fire. Or the hand embroidered 16-panelled ghaghra in two shades of off-white with a trail that was donned by Isha Ambani on her wedding. Each of them looked like a divine beauty courtesy AJSK and their immaculate sense of dressing the bride on her

D-Day. Truly, this designer duo created quite a stir in 2018 and prepping to raise the bar in 2019. In a freewheeling conversation with Modish, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla open up about their journey, friendship, love for fashion, their partnership, what keeps them going and a lot more while also hinting at something new and fresh from the world of AJSK. MODISH: Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. For the fashion fraternity it’s a match made in heaven. Tell us how these power packed names came together and became such a sensational success story. We met at a common friend's Independence Day Brunch in 1986. The rapport was instant. We spoke about our design philosophy and dreams that afternoon and decided on pure instinct to join forces and make them a reality. We had no formal training in fashion, our parents loaned us two lakhs, money they could ill-afford to loan and we began working on our first collection called Mata Hari. We also opened a boutique by the

same name in early 1987. Rest as they say is history. What we lacked in training and finances we replaced with an unswerving passion for beauty sans compromise. We were committed to creating the finest irrespective of the blood, sweat and tears it took. It is a commitment we hold onto 32 years later. Whatever it takes, is our motto and we live by it. MODISH: Fashion is not worth its salt if it does not keep up with the changing time, mindsets and generations. AJSK is a name that has not only stood the test of time but has grown stronger, expanded globally and has a profound presence in the fashion world. How has AJSK managed to evolve during the course of three decades and still stay relevant? For any artist remaining relevant is not the prime motivation, honing and expanding their expression is. Reinvention comes as a natural result of that practice. We are always restless. We are forever learning. Relentless in our ambition to break our own bar and rules.

We had no formal training in fashion, our parents loaned us two lakhs, money they could ill-afford to loan and we began working on our first collection called Mata Hari. We also opened a boutique by the same name in early 1987. Rest as they say is history. You have to be turned on by what you do, else you stagnate. You have to constantly jump into the unknown and unchartered. Whether it is the move to diffusion and prêt-à-porter from pure couture or our work with interiors and event design or the launch of our western wear label, we constantly challenge ourselves. And growth as an artist, as a design house lies in that perpetual evolution. MODISH: In 2002, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla did the costume designing for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s romantic drama “Devdas” that we all know was a majestic spectacle of love, life, loss and drama and also a landmark film in the history of Indian cinema. Later, the both of you went on to win the prestigious and coveted National Award for costume design for “Devdas”. How was that experience like and what does it feel to be the recipient of a National Award? It was wonderful to meet Sanjay Bhansali who gave us a completely free hand to work on the film. We revived Banarasi brocades, incorporated khadi, and our favourite chikankari in the costumes. We were inspired by the beautiful Madhuri Dixit and in the course met the iconic grand master Birju Maharaj. We also created a line of jewellery for the movie. Devdas also featured our voluminous crushed fabric ensembles with gota. We also chose to revisit and revive our mirror work done originally for Rima Kapoor Jain’s wedding in 1990 and designed a spectacular mirrorwork ghagra for Madhuri Dixit as Chandramukhi. We continue to reinvent mirror work today, which is still inspiring and MODISH MAGAZINE

influencing the industry almost 2 decades later. We worked relentlessly and feverishly, it was a lot of hard work, creatively satisfying and the national award was an icing on the cake. MODISH: Fast forward to 2018, the celebrated designer duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla decided to return to costume designing for movies with “Veere Di Wedding”. What took you sixteen years and why did you opt for “Veere Di Wedding”? We love Rhea and Sonam Kapoor and when Rhea, who we consider one of the finest stylists in our country approached us for the film we were excited. Rhea was keen to revive vintage AJSK designs with a totally modern spin. We went into creative overdrive with four female protagonists in lead roles. It was a dream collaboration come true. We revived our miniature collection and designed a blouse for Sonam Kapoor. Kareena Kapoor Khan wore a Chikankari lehenga from

our archives, paired with an off-shoulder choli with pearl tassels on the sleeves. There was the crazy constellation lehenga in the engagement scene and we introduced thigh high slits on ghagras. The costumes became trendsetters for bridal ensembles across the country. It was highly gratifying. Designing for strongly written women characters, each one, unique, was thrilling. Women rule our hearts and our world. MODISH: We have seen quite a few famous celebrity duet split in the course of time for various reasons despite a long-standing tenure. For Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, what is it that cements your relationship as partners working together for so many years in the industry and still going strong. We feel extraordinarily blessed in each other. As humans, as artists, as partners. A deep sense of respect for each other as professionals, an alchemy where 1 plus 1 always creates more than 2, a willingness to disagree and even enthusiasm for disagreement has kept us going. Also patience. A lot of patience (they break into a laughter). You must embrace one another as a whole, good, bad and ugly. Once you do, there is no letting go of a beautiful thing.

MODISH: You have a rich and extravagant body of work build over the last three decades. One look at your collection and the first thing that strikes your mind is the extravaganza, lavishness and elegance that intricately rest on the subtle tone of “larger than life”. Where does the inspiration behind those swish designs come from? Inspiration is everywhere. Artists feel things deeply, they see things differently. Life, emotions, experience all come together and dance with the inner imagination to create an expression. History, music, architecture, art, travel, all expand and influence one's creative horizons. We have an insatiable appetite for Beauty. We are never satisfied with ourselves. We always strive for bigger, better, different and we are willing to do whatever it takes to make those dreams a reality. MODISH: The world knows your love for white right from the start. In the early 90’s you did a white on white Khadi Collection and since then you have dressed a battery of celebrities in white. How did your love story with white start? It is an instinctive thing. White is pure, pristine, supremely elegant and timeless. It is the perfect canvas for embroideries; its beauty is unparalleled and ethereal. We see its beauty as universal. Winter or summer, casual or couture. Wedding or Red Carpet, it is a personal passion. MODISH MAGAZINE

MODISH: Now over the years you have sort of branched out with different labels to cater to people with different kind of fashion sensibilities. Of course, there is the time renowned Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla. Then you have ASAL, Gulabo and Khosla Jani. How did each of these labels find life and whose brainchild was it? We began with Couture and for many years could not see ourselves work in other sectors of fashion. Then we realized we must challenge ourselves. That diffusion was not dilution but carrying forth the essence of our design philosophy to new arenas and audiences. That is how ASAL by Abu Sandeep was born. With western wear, we did not want to join the bandwagon and waited until the idea of an international label and silhouettes appealed to us. KHOSLA JANI began as a creative experiment with a capsule collection and is now a full-fledged label that has formal, red carpet and couture as its expression. GULABO by Abu Sandeep is our ode to easy breezy resort inspired, prêt-à-porter with attitude. We love the idea of dressing women for every mood and occasion. At every budget, whether it is casual or haute, our labels now incorporate it all. Saudamini Mattu, our CEO, was instrumental in the decision to expand the House of ABU JANI SANDEEP KHOSLA. Her business vision and youth gave us new blood and a new ambition to grow.

MODISH: You have a dedicated clientele. Your patronage vows by you. From the Bachchans to the Kapadia’s and across generations you have dressed them repeatedly. What does it take to build a strong relationship with AJSK? We love our clients. Many of them are close friends. Every person we dress we treat as a VIP. Because they are. It delights us to have dressed three generations of families. When you give it your all, it shows. It is appreciated and it becomes a lifelong relationship.

MODISH: Last year, we saw a lot of famous celebrities like Sonam Kapoor, Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Isha Ambani walk down the aisle. Interestingly, you dressed each one of them on their most treasured occasion in life and their family members as well. And the 16,000 man-hours for Deepika’s Ivory and Gold Chikankari ensemble. How has been the experience? 2018 was the year of weddings. It was delightful to be entrusted with ensembles and event design. A huge challenge and exhausting but certainly invigorating as artists. We made sure that every bride looked absolutely unique and got the ensemble and celebration of her dreams. Sonam's chikankari ensemble was entirely different to Deepika's. Priyanka wore diverse looks from fabulously folksy to glam sari to form fitting lehenga in pastels. Every ensemble paid homage to the unique beauty and personality of the bride. Joy is made to measure.

MODISH: International celebrities like Judi Dench, Beyoncé, Carrie Underwood, Sophie Turner have worn your creations. How different is it to create and dress an international celeb vis-à-vis a celebrity back home. It is no different. We design for ourselves. The philosophy and expression is universal and unchanging. We use international models for that very reason because we don't think Indian silhouettes are ‘ethnic wear’. We see their beauty as global. Whether it is Dame Judi Dench or Beyonce or Sophie Turner we dress them in Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla as much as we do in Khosla Jani. In their thirty-two yearlong illustrious journey, the distinguished designer duo have created fashion miracles, set trends, crossed international boundaries and made some wonderful friendships. The ace couturiers have carved a niche for themselves in the industry as well-appointed champions of modishness and majesty who continue to stun the fashion fraternity with their ideas and designs.

SHIVAN NARRESH Story by Roman

Fashion’s favorite party A DECADE AGO, HAVING CREATED RIPPLES IN THE INTERNATIONAL FASHION CORRIDORS, THE SWIMWEAR SPECIALISTS SHIVAN BHATIYA AND NARRESH KUKREJA FORAYED INTO THE INDIAN BEACHES WITH A SPLASH. THE DYNAMIC DESIGNER DUO SHOWCASED THEIR FIRST LUXURY SWIMWEAR LINE IN CANNES AT THE MARE DI MODA BEACHWARE AWARDS IN 2008. SOON IN 2009, THE DUO WERE ON THE POWER LIST OF A LEADING INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE. With their India debut in 2010 at the Lakme Fashion Week Summer Resort 2010, there has been no turning back for this avant-garde designer duo. Today, SHIVAN & NARRESH is India’s first luxury swimwear and holiday wear brand and we cannot be more thankful to them. An unconventional start, beyond doubt. In this freewheeling chat with Modish, Shivan Bhatiya – Head Designer and Narresh Kukreja – Creative Director for SHIVAN & NARRESH take us through their journey, talk about their proudest moment, delve upon the importance of an inclusive fashion world and share with us the inspiration behind few of their groundbreaking designs that took the world of fashion by a storm.

18

These design competitions helped us earn scholarships to pursue our education further in Italy. Winning the Mittelmoda International Beachwear Awards brought out our passion for swimwear and convinced us to explore this segment, thus starting the journey of our brand. We finally launched the brand in Cannes in 2010 where we were offered to showcase our collection for Mare di Moda, which is the swimwear manufacturing association of Europe. It is with their support and cooperation that we could start our global luxury holiday brand with its origins in India.

Take us through the history of SHIVAN & NARRESH. How did the union of Shivan Bhatiya and Narresh Kukreja come about?

Your style of fashion is distinctly different from the style of other renowned designers. As far as one can tell, the brand - SHIVAN & NARRESH has been the torchbearer of the luxury swimwear label in an overtly conscious and traditional country. How did this style of fashion originate in your mind?

Shivan: Our journey began in NIFT Delhi where we met during our under graduation. We collaborated and participated in several international design competitions, namely the Italian, Mare di Moda Beachwear Awards 2006 held in Bali and World of Wearable Art Awards 2006 in New Zealand.

Narresh: We wanted to explore the Indian market, which was still untouched in terms of experimenting with swimwear. We began by designing swimwear with the motive of encouraging Indians to feel confident in their body types and embrace it. As a brand, the focus is on the millenniMODISH MAGAZINE

The first thought to cross your mind when you think of SHIVAN & NARRESH is a beach party and exotic vacations. There is a lasting smile. Spreading cheer through your kind of fashion must bring a different kind of satisfaction. How are you achieving that? Narresh: Being a holiday wear brand for men and women we understand the importance of their opinion and judgement. We are responsive to their needs and constantly take inputs from them. Comfort, design and confidence are key to our creative process in every sense. Hence, we push our creative boundaries and experiment with new styles and different silhouettes every season.

als, who are aware of the contemporary trends, and have been traveling more to beaches and resort destinations. Moreover, swimwear is now being seen as something beyond the pool or the beach and has found a utility as a bodysuit to be worn with trousers, shorts, shirts, etc. Hence, the demand has seen an exponential increase in the millennial demographic. The “bikini sari” created quite a stir in the fashion industry. Almost revolutionary. What was the inspiration behind this invention? Shivan: When we look at the history of fashion, great fashion houses in the world are born when they create something that solves a prevalent design problem for the society, and take a leap for the entire generation of that time. For instance, the trench coat invention by Burberry to the little 20

black dress by Chanel. In 2011, we faced a similar generational problem: ‘What does an average Indian woman wear to recreate around water?’ A bathing suit may seem appropriate but it did not fit the right cultural context to be worn openly in front of prying eyes. Cotton or silk saris while simply crushing or creasing did not perform the required functional task. Hence, in 2011, we created the Bikini Sari! It is a design solution that is appropriate as a swimwear option and as well serves its purpose for the modesty aspect of the Indian societal sensibilities. The Bikini Sari is a signature creation of the brand that can be draped in ten different ways and is perfect for people who wish to lounge by a beach or a pool. It can be worn to a day or an evening event, to a beach or to a bar and to cocktail parties and destination weddings by adjusting its drape.

With millennials increasingly looking forward to invest more in experiences than tangibles, we are constantly looking forward to cater to their needs. Your start, by any stretch of imagination, cannot be said to be conventional. Clearly, this must require an innate sense of belief and confidence in your idea. You are visionaries to say the least. Tell us if there were moments of worry and nervousness and the kind of challenges you faced along this journey. The Indian swimwear market was at a beginning stage when we entered in 2010. We wanted to break into the mindsets of the Indian consumer for them to have a lifestyle of swim and resort, which hitherto had always been a distant Western dream. Since there was an absence of acceptance for swimwear in the Indian society, it was challenging for us to setup and develop a business that treated this MODISH MAGAZINE

The Mastectomy blouse is an exordium to the mastectomy swimwear service. There is so much talk around inclusivity in all spheres of life. issue of acknowledgment at the atomic level. Although challenging, swimwear was one of the few categories that allowed us to mix our love for art and fashion and carry it forward passionately. With the absence of manufacturing, distribution, sales, marketing and communication channels, we faced certain obstacles back then. Training manpower, tutoring the retailer and most importantly educating the consumer to buy the right swimsuit were a few other challenges. Overcoming cultural, evolutionary and technical differences and eventually bridging the gap helped the brand flourish over the years. What is A SHIVAN & NARRESH kind of woman? Shivan: A SHIVAN & NARRESH woman is someone who has a strong sense of style. She is bold, confident and sophisticated. She takes pride in herself and is not afraid to flaunt her curves gracefully. She is a well-travelled woman who wishes to make everyone’s heads turn with her holiday wear choices. Shivan: Being from the forum of fashion, we have realized that creating something unique might not be an easy task every time but building a change is somewhat necessary when it comes to inclusivity of designs in fashion. Even though swimwear has successfully carved a niche over the years, there is a misconception that swimwear can only be worn by someone with sample size figure. The rich history of our country has seen women’s recreational activities around water, at Baolis and Ghats through the years. This strengthens the idea of every woman feeling confident in her body type, thereby taking pride in herself. With swimwear, the idea of inclusiveness in size and body confidence comes from shifting the focus to strengths rather than hiding the weakness in a particular body type. With the same train of thought, we have designed styles suitable for all body types. For example, for a bottom heavy, it is better to focus on the beautiful collarbones by giving a one-shoulder maillot. For a banana shade, it is better to give a Trikini so that a cut out at the waist gives an illusion of an hourglass. You have grown as a brand from desig ning clothes to expanding into SHIVAN & NARRESH Celebrations and SHIVAN & NARRESH Homes. Tell us something about that. Narresh: We started working with swimwear when we started the brand. Owing to the terrific response from our buyers, we decided to explore the SHIVAN & NARRESH Celebrations and SHIVAN & NARRESH Homes podium. As designers, we are always looking into a wider aspect for a more creative vision. When we are designing sets for our fashion shows or a SHIVAN & NARRESH wedding, we possibly create a complementing design in order to compete with the designs that the people wear. Indians are obsessed with weddings and they willingly spend huge amounts for a perfect event. Thus, we realized that a design director could make sure that the whole wedding does not have any stones left unturned. Like, from designing the decor invites, wedding cards, cocktail bar menus, table settings, lighting to even styling families according to their wishes as well as complementing to the theme, each of these things are closely looked into and taken care of.

How difficult or easy it is to work together?

For SHIVAN & NARRESH Homes, the idea was to diversify into a canvas of spatial design and use the same elements of bold, confident & sophisticated that we use in our fashion language. This helped us transform people’s living spaces into incredible pieces of art rich in color and vibrancy. It completes our fashion world when we design a holiday home in a city or at a destination for any of our connoisseurs. How do you divide your work – the creative and business aspect of it? Narresh: We both have very complimentary skill sets and while the brand is neither of us in a hundred percent capacity, it is possibly the best of both our worlds that we end up combining in one. Shivan’s strength is in silhouettes, while I am obsessed with colors and prints. Typically in every collection, the design flows from Shivan’s silhouettes to my table where I design the prints and colors of the season. While design is an overlapping department for us, Shivan handles production & I handle marketing for the company. You featured in the coveted Forbes 30 under 30 achiever’s list. What was that like? Shivan: Being featured in Forbes ’30 Under 30’ has been one of the proudest moment for us. It felt like an accumulation of all our hard work that we have put into the brand since the time we started. To receive this kind of commendation amongst such celebrated and driven professionals reassured us that we are on the right path, both creatively and professionally. SHIVAN & NARRESH is a regular at the fashion weeks. You are fresh out of the Lakme Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2019 where we saw some spectacular designs. What is the kind of effort and time that goes behind getting a fashion show done? Narresh: Considering we are a travel brand at core, most of our designs are inspired from our travel stories. Therefore, in order to implement our inspiration, sourced from different experiences, in our collection requires a lot of hard work and consistency. We put a lot of thought and labor in bringing out the best designs and the whole idea is to encourage people to go beyond basic clothing when they are out on holidays or destination weddings per se.

Shivan: We have known each other for over a decade now and understood each other’s strengths and weaknesses. It is in fact easier to work together at this time since our roles are clearly defined. What does it take to be a power duo? Narresh: Since the day we have started working, we have given our 100% into anything that we curate. We strongly believe that it takes hard work and sincerity to reach a successful place in life. Also having a balance between your professional life and personal life is extremely important. Establishing a mindful harmony with your partner is what makes a powerful duo.

riyanka Chopra’s journey in the showbiz started at the young age of 17 when she was crowned Miss World. Soon thereafter, she debuted in Bollywood and gave her career’s best performances in critically acclaimed movies like Fashion, Barfi, Mary Kom, Kaminey. Her movies like Agneepath, Krrish 3, Don 2, Dostana, Dil Dhadakne Do, Bajirao Mastani (her last outing at the Bollywood box office) have set the cash registers at the box office ringing. singing talent that she kept guarded for a large part of her acting career. In 2012, Priyanka released her debut single featuring the legendary American rapper Will.i.am and went onto release a few more singles including Exotic with Pitbull. She was beginning to make waves in America until in 2015 when she bagged the lead role in ABC’s Quantico. If that was not enough, Priyanka received the People's Choice Award in 2016 for favorite actress in a new TV Series for her role in "Quantico” making her the first South Asian actress to win a People’s Choice Award. As an established star on "Quantico," she won the award for favorite dramatic TV actress, second time in a row in 2017. She appeared as the villain Victoria Leeds in the 2017 "Baywatch" reboot movie. Priyanka Chopra owned the red carpet at every event she attended in America such as Emmy’s, Oscars, White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Golden Globes or the Met Gala. On the other hand, Nick Jonas, an American singer, songwriter and actor saw continued commercial success as Music Band Jonas Brothers. While the group officially disbanded in 2013, Jonas recorded his solo studio album, which topped the musical chartbusters. In 2017, Jonas appeared in the adventure comedy film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which became the fifth highest-grossing film of the year. While their Met Gala appearance may have set the backdrop of their love story, it was only after having exchanged a few messages that their love relationship blossomed. Within months, Nick Jonas and his family joined Priyanka Chopra and her family in India to get married at the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, Rajasthan amidst extravagant wedding celebrations. It is interesting to see how Chopra and Jonas have effortlessly adapted to each other’s cultural values, traditions and geographies and blended like the sun and the light. Together, they bring unmatched stardom from two of the world’s biggest film and music industries – an extraordinary match in this business. The latest single from the Jonas Brothers, “Sucker”, featuring Priyanka Chopra is proof of the massive stardom they enjoy. The music video crossed over a 50 million views on YouTube in just two days. With a combined staggering followership of over 58 million on Instagram, the views does not come as a surprise. Nick and Priyanka have shown the world that love has no boundaries and only one language – the one that the heart speaks. “I know you're gonna like it in my city” said Priyanka Chopra in her debut single and rightly so. The world loves absolutely everything about the city Nick and Priyanka are building together and cannot wait to see what is next from their stable.

DEEPIKA PADUKONE AND RANVEER SINGH Lovebirds, who found their nest!

2

018 will be remembered, as the year when Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh got married to each other at Lake Como in Italy. Their weddings – a traditional Konkani and a Sindhi-style wedding – were beautiful events and their photos from the ceremonies spelled out love, romance and magic in its entire splendor.

Rewind to a few years ago, Deepika Padukone made her debut in a Farah Khan Film opposite Bollywood Baadshah – Shah Rukh Khan. The movie was a runaway success and gave Bollywood its Shanti in Deepika Padukone. Having established her acting prowess, Deepika’s initial few years witnessed quite a few up’s and down’s. A few years post Deepika’s debut release, Yash Raj launched Ranveer Singh accompanied by rumors on how Ranveer’s rich father had funded his first release. Be that as it may, Ranveer proved his acting skills beyond doubt and the rumors died a natural death.

Move to 2012, Padukone appeared in Cocktail and took her acting prowess to the next level as the new age Veronica. Since then there has been no turning back for the stunning actress. Deepika topped every ranking, every chart and set the box office on fire as producers and scripts queued up in front of her door. Her choice of movies like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, Chennai Express, Piku, Tamasha and Bajirao Mastani catapulted her to success that has gone down in history making her the most loved actress of Bollywood. With Padmaavat, she proved her mettle yet again and became one of those few actors to be the central character and even fewer who have shattered box records in such capacity. She also crossed over to Hollywood and starred as Serena Unger opposite Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage. Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh apart from his acting skills constantly turned heads with his fashion sense. He quietly worked his way to the A-list categories of actors and became the audiences most preferred choice. With speculations rife that Deepika and Ranveer are a couple, the official announcement from the two came only at the time of their wedding. The news set the internet ablaze and the fans of the couple rejoiced.

By definition, a power couple is a relationship consisting of two individuals who are each successful and influential in their own right and Deepika and Ranveer personify the definition of power couple in every which way. While they continue to make movies in their individual capacities, only time will tell about their plans to come together on the big screen.

BARACK OBAMA AND MICHELLE OBAMA Learning from the Best!

A

power couple is more than just a mere accessory around the arm. In the case of the Obama’s, Barack and Michelle are in perfect sync with their outlook, attitude, believes and influence. A match made in heaven! Former President of the United States Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama are a household name not just in America but world over (thanks to their extensive social work, political and social conduct and more). While we know of their strong marital relationship, it is interesting to read how they became the power couple who are influencing the world with their positive demeanor. Nearly two decades ago, Michelle Robinson (now Obama) was working as an advisor to Barack Obama who was doing summer intern from Harvard Law. Cupid struck at the two, Barack made the first move, and after three years of steady relationship, he popped the question to which Michelle instantly said “Yes”. The couple got married on October 18, 1992 and are raising two beautiful daughters Malia and Sasha.

26

Since their marriage, the couple grew by leaps and bounds as they took risks, believed in themselves and did the right thing (ironically also the name of the movie which they watched together at a time when they were dating). Certainly, having each other’s back helped. From bidding for a Senate seat and winning in 2004 to announcing his candidacy for president of the US and later serving as the POTUS, Michelle was all by his side. Similarly, Barack Obama offered his unstinted support to Michelle in all her endeavors through life. Amidst all the picture perfect moments, Michelle Obama recently revealed that their relationship was not all hunky dory. They had their share of challenges and sought marriage counselling in the past. The revelation comes as a huge surprise but at the same time aids in the acceptance of issues between a couple and the importance of seeking help. A taboo hitherto! What especially worked for them was that they stayed best friends and lovers through their hair-pulling and nail-biting days as well MODISH MAGAZINE

llen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are known as one of Hollywood’s power couples. The actress and the talk show host have known each other for almost two decades and their relationship seems to only get stronger as the years go by. Although there are many heartwarming stories about Ellen DeGeneres,

her love story with Portia features high on the list. For Portia, it was love at first sight with Ellen. While they had seen each other frequently at different events for the initial few years, the Emmy-winning talk show host had no idea about Portia’s true feelings. Portia was closeted and afraid that if she spoke about her being gay, it would be a career-limiting move for her. Hence, she was not entirely sure about sharing her feelings with Ellen let alone date the most famous lesbian in the world. The two started dating in 2004 and in 2008, the day after the California Supreme Court overturned the same sex marriage ban, Ellen announced on her show that she was getting married to Portia and her fans erupted in joy. Even after years, Ellen and Portia have a kind of love, most people dream about. They both seem to have honest respect for each other, which creates a great friendship and one-ofa-kind relationship between them. Not only are Ellen and Portia the most high-profile lesbian couple in the world, but both boast established careers in entertainment and business. Patently, for this power couple, it is all about love and togetherness.

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s (The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) fairytale romance ended in a storybook wedding coupled with picturesque family. While a portion of the fairytale image may be attributed to the Royal family, there is no denying the fact that something about them has captivated the minds of the people since the beginning of their relationship. Since getting married, the pair have been attending charity events and touring the world non-stop. Not to mention raising their three children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte along with their little brother Prince Louis. The Duchess devotes her time to supporting a number of charitable causes and organi-

sations, several of which are centred around providing children with the best possible start in life. For several years, The Duchess has been working with experts and organizations that are championing the importance of providing solid psychological, social and emotional platforms for children in their earliest years of life in order to support their mental health and emotional resilience, and to provide them with the foundations to lead to healthy and fulfilling adulthoods. Conservation work and supporting communities to protect their natural environment for future generations has been one of The Duke's key priorities for a number of years. The Duke has publically supported initiatives to fund conservation, community development and environmental education programmes across Africa as Royal Patron of the Tusk Trust, in a bid to highlight the inspiring conservation work that is being undertaken to a global audience. Keeping up with a busy work schedule has not prevented the Royal Couple from being dotting parents to their growing up children while managing work at the same time. Few love stories are truly made in heaven.

BUILDING UP A SUCCESSFUL CAREER

Courtesy:

The POWER of

But if you feel that this is easier said than done, we have it all framed out for you. Following these simple rules will help you navigate your way through the challenges that are expected to crop up in a relationship and emerge victorious as a unit.

1 WHEN YOU ARE IN IT FOR THE LONG HAUL, THE SUCCESS OF THE RELATIONSHIP GREATLY DEPENDS ON THE INDIVIDUAL HAPPINESS OF EACH PERSON WITHIN THE RELATIONSHIP. Story by: Roman eing in a relationship can be quite different from being single. When you are single, your worries mostly revolve around your own self and while you may be cognizant to the situations involving your families and friends, it is not quite the same when you are a couple. Your thoughts, decisions and actions are not entirely yours and almost always have a significant impact on your other half. The focus is no longer in succeeding as an individual, rather you and your partner should both be doing well as an entity. While in the earlier phase of the relationship, this may not be the sole focus but it begins to take a more robust shape as the relationship progresses from preliminary to a more sustainable form having spent some productive time together. When you are in it for the long haul, the success of the relationship greatly depends on the individual happiness of each person within the relationship. As your partner’s partner, it is your job — as well as in your best interest — to help him or her achieve their

30

FLEXIBILITY FOREMOST As professionals who want to transform their own careers, you would have noticed that the career goals we start with in the beginning often end up being subject to meaningful reviews as we move ahead in our life. This is largely because we significantly change and alter as we grow and mature, and what matters most to us in later years is often extremely different from what we cared about when we started. Therefore, in order to be happy in your relationship, it is extremely important to choose a partner who is flexible, open-minded, and respectful of what you want – a person who can change and grow with you and not wire you to stay the same.

2

life dreams and goals. Losing touch with your individual dreams while being in a relationship may be septic enough to drown the relationship in a pool of frustration, anger and helplessness. One must avoid such a situation where you view your partner’s career dreams to be at significant odds with how you want to live your life, and how you envisioned the family life to be. Those who do their best to keep their partner’s goals as a priority are the happiest and this in return ensures the longevity of the relationship. Fortunately, the easiest way of helping your partner in achieving their goal is to create an environment of support.

BE YOUR PARTNER’S ARDENT FAN You do not have to be a superstar working in the entertainment business to have fans. You need to be admired and shown some unconditional love by the ones you care for. Regardless of whether you had a great day at work or struggled to keep up with the pressures of the corporate life, all you need is confidence and belief in your own self, coupled with your partner’s reiteration of the same and this will help you start over again. Your belief in your partner will act as an undying motivation for him to move ahead.

3

REGULAR FEEDBACK Feedback is that one ingredient which can make a world of a difference in most aspects of an individual’s life as well as a couple’s relationship. Constructive feedback can work wonders for your relationship. It can help build a greater level of trust, assurance and propagates an atmosphere of love, care and attention.

4

HARD WORK: NO SUBSTITUTE Yes, that is true. A relationship needs as much hard work as the job that you do. Success follows hard work and there is no denying that. If you take your relationship for granted and get complacent, the chances are your partner will drift away and an unmanageable divide would eat your relationship. A successful relationship with your partner is the key to a successful career and vice versa.

5

MIND THE SPACE One of the best things you can offer the person you are in love with is to give them the space that they deserve. Alternatively, the worst thing to do in a relationship is to suffocate your partner by eating into their room. There is nothing more precious to a person than his freedom. The rule does not change when in a relationship. Do not blur the lines between who you are and the relationship you carry with you. Mind their space and you will be amazed to see the exponential growth in your relationship, which will translate into stupendous success in your individual careers. Wear your partner’s success as stars on your sleeves. It is the sign of the prosperous relationship you formed with your partner. Nothing beats the power of love for a successful career. tutional validity of section 377, pronounced the historic judgement which enabled the full decolonisation of the IndianPenal Code by striking down the fossilized section 377. A five-judge bench, which included the Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, termed the act “archaic” and upheld personal freedom in a judgment that ran into almost 500 pages. The verdict now pronounces people of the LGBTQ community as citizens with equal rights in the eyes of the law.The bench upheld consensual intercourse between individuals and struck down arguments claiming that carnal sex between two people of the same gender was against nature. A particular observation of the bench that “we have

to vanquish prejudice, embrace inclusion and ensure equal rights” is remarkable. But the question that still dominates most of the discussions around the subject is whether the society at large is willing to embrace inclusivity of the kind that the LGBTQ+ community expects. While coming out continues to be a challenge in the wake of societal norms, a microscopic analysis would reveal that the change is happening even if at a slow pace.As we continue to debate “picture abhi baaki hai mere dost”, the pages of the magazine turns rainbow as Modish speaks with the torchbearers of the LGBTQ community on their journey, challenges, triumphs and more.

Picking up from where left, I ask him about his marriage which was not recognized in law in India. “It was an intimate wedding in Paris with our immediate families by our side”. After a prolonged gap, he continues, “My marriage with Cyril led me to filing the petition with the Supreme Court to challenge the constitutional validity of section 377.” The journey has been tough but totally worth it as the controversial and archaic section 377 that criminalized homosexual relationships has been struck down. He says, “Love is limitless and boundless and needs to be broken away from shackles”. Feuillebois and Suri’s marriage in Goa in December 2018, after the Supreme Court verdict, was the couple’s way of celebrating the verdict and the wedding – the gayest India has ever seen.

social

He reminisces, his wedding day at the beach where they exchanged rings, garlands and vows. The decorations were heavily done in white with pops of pastel pinks, while the temporarily erected hall for the wedding ceremony featured roses, hydrangeas and orchids, with wide-ranging views of the sea in the backdrop. Suri and Feuillebois coordinated in monochrome outfits by Shantanu & Nikhil. Suri wore a black sherwani with a gold embellished bandgala and shoes by Dutch brand Ruparo, and Feuillebois wore an all-white bandhgala with Jean Baptiste Rautureau shoes for the ceremony. Openly, everything about the Keshav-Cyril wedding was inclusive, pure love and jamboree of being queer. Keshav Suri - the name is almost synonymous with freedom in the way we experience it today. Suri’s contribution to the LGBTQ+ community has been noted and applauded by those from within and outside of the community. With Keshav Suri Foundation, Suri has taken a step forward for the well-being of the community. The objective is terrific - to embrace, empower and mainstream the LGBTQ+ community. The Foundation has also tied up with It Gets Better Project - a global platform to uplift, empower, and connect

NAAZ!

WE GET CHATTY WITH THE REIGNING QUEEN AS SHE OPENS UP ABOUT HER DAYS OF BATTLE WITH HER OWN SELF, HER FAMILY AND THE SOCIETY AND STORIES OF HER FIGHTING SPIRIT THAT LED TO INNUMERABLE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND A CONTINUAL DESIRE TO WORK FOR THE UNDERPRIVILEGED.

P

Story by Roman hilosopher Herbert Spencer, ages ago, had coined the phrase “survival of the fittest”. Borrowed later by Charles Darwin for his theory of evolution, the phrase has withstood the test of times and holds as much relevance today as it did years ago. Naaz Joshi’s story has seemed to find its force in this phrase – “Survival of the fittest”, which is why despite all the odds stacked against her she proved that gender has absolutely nothing to do with hard work and its logical corollary popularly known as “success”.

We get chatty with the reigning queen as she opens up about her days of battle with her own self, her family and the society and stories of her fighting spirit that led to innumerable accomplishments and a continual desire to work for the underprivileged. She holds the Miss World Diversity Title 2018 and that too a second time in the row. To be the only Transgender woman amongst a pool of participants from twenty-one across the globe must have been a challenging experience. With a hint of Naaz in her face, she says, “I heard about the Miss World Diversity competition, which was online in 2017, through my friends. In 2018, we had a live beauty contest in Dubai. My co-contestants voted me as the Miss personality and Miss Congeniality. Being the only transgender amongst them, it was wonderful to receive so much support from each one of them. With the Miss World Diversity 2018 title, I hope the transgender woman would be recognized for their talent and hard work.” MODISH MAGAZINE

She is not just India’s first transsexual who has won Miss World Diversity title for the first time ever but also the first transsexual model who has ever won an international competition with women as contestants. Clearly, being India's first International transgender beauty queen did not come easy and more so because of the lack of acceptance we receive as a transgender. She beams with joy, “I have thus far featured on six magazine covers and walked the ramp as the showstopper in fifteen shows. It does take a great deal of courage to break stereotypes but the only way to do it is through your relentless hard work, undying passion for your craft and faith in your own self.” We could not agree any less. Naaz, with her body of work, has proved beyond doubt that there is no substitute to hard work no matter you are straight, lesbian, gay, trans or queer.

“I am humbled by the LOVE I receive from my community. Make the most of this life given by God. You are your strength and you are your own inspiration. If I can change the mindset of people, so can you.”

Having worked as a bar dancer, or working in a restaurant or even as an escort, she followed her passion to study and went on to complete a distant learning course in marketing from IMT. She also graduated from NIFT with the most creative designer award and worked with India’s most popular fashion names – Ritu Kumar and Ritu Beri but left the industry post the sudden demise of her cousin sister Late Viveka Babajee. She pauses for a brief moment and says, “It was Viveka’s dream to see me pursue my passion of modelling and so I gave it a shot. In no time, I realized that being under the arc lights is my true calling.” For anyone to be in the space that she has been, it could be very difficult and to top it all being a transgender makes the journey that much more difficult in our country. When we speak to her about the challenges and difficulties she has faced all along, she acknowledges it but quickly follows it up with a modest response, “I am humbled by the love I receive from my community. Make the most of this life given by God. You are your strength and you are your own inspiration. If I can change the mindset of people, so can you.” She is particularly thrilled by the striking down of section 377 by the Supreme Court of India but says that much needs to be done from an acceptance point of view. As a society, we need to be more inclusive and is hopeful that we will bridge the gap.” We tell her the issue is titled “The Power of Love”. She jumps in and announces, “Wars that cannot end with blood can definitely end with love. Such is the power of love. Love one and love all.” We could not agree with her more. Chatting with Naaz has been a pride-filled moment for us. She has moved mountains to reach where she is today and her hard work is hard to miss. She is confident of her future and vows to mainstream Transgender like no one else has ever thought. Just when we adieu to each other, she exclaims, “Equality is the future. Support and provide opportunities to all. Treat everyone with love and respect regardless of gender.” More power to you Naaz!

the movie screening, we met with Gazal Dhaliwal, who very few know is a transwoman herself and add to that, a pioneer in her field. Dhaliwal’s journey makes for an interesting story itself and can well be adapted to suit Bollywood’s mainstream cinematic sensibilities. Gazal was born with Gender Dysphoria – a condition where a person does not associate with the biological gender he or she is born with. After a long drawn struggle paired with unflinching support from her parents, Dhaliwal underwent a sex reassignment surgery. Her body was no longer a cage. She was at peace. She has also proved that being a transwoman in Bollywood is no bar; the ability to create such wonderful content is the only pre requisite. We ask her about her experience with ELKDTAL and she says smilingly, “The movie has been inspired from P.G. Wodehouse’s Damsel in Distress and while there was no gay angle to the book which was written over 100 years ago, with ELKDTAL we wanted to

azal Dhaliwal, Bollywood screenplay and dialogue writer, has many coming of age stories to her credit. Amongst others, her notable work includes her dialogues for Lipstick Under My Burkha Set – a movie set in the crowded lanes of small town India. The story chronicles the secret lives of four women in search of a little freedom. A burkha-clad college girl struggles with issues of cultural identity and her aspirations to be a pop singer. A young two-timing beautician seeks to escape the claustrophobia of her small town. An oppressed homemaker and mother of three, lives the alternate life of an enterprising salesperson. Lastly, a 55 yearold widow rediscovers her sexuality through a phone romance. Trapped in their worlds, they claim their desires through secret acts of rebellion. While the movie went through its fair share of challenges before and after its release, it was lapped up by the audience and loved by the critics. The film premiered at international film festivals and nominated in

various award shows in different categories including Award for the Best Dialogue. More recently, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga hit the screens and the audience was drawn to this same sex love story. This coming-of-age drama film directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar had the screenplay written by Dhar and Gazal Dhaliwal. The film tells the story of Sweety Chaudhary, a closeted lesbian, and her attempts to come out to her religious and traditional Punjabi family. A mainstream movie in every which way, it featured stars Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla, Sonam Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao, along with Akshay Oberoi, Regina Cassandra, Brijendra Kala and Madhumalti Kapoor in supporting roles. One fire and Aligarh later, Bollywood made yet another attempt at narrating a progressive story that dealt with same sex relationships – this time more mainstream than ever. We met with the screenplay writer of the film, Gazal Dhaliwal, at the Keshav Suri Foundation’s special screening of the movie for the queer community and its supporters. During

That probably were reflected in the commerce of the film as well. Clearly, we have some ground to cover in that respect. Nevertheless, it was truly heartwarming to see people from the LGBTQ+ community shower their love and affection for the movie. That was sweet success for the entire cast and crew of the film.” After India decriminalized homosexuality last September, Bollywood came out of the closet and set love free through ELKDTAL. Jab We Met Story by Roman

FOR SUCHANDRA DAS AND SREE MUKHERJEE, LOVE HAPPENED ALMOST AT THE FIRST SIGHT. SPARKS FLEW AND THEIR CHEMISTRY ADDED FUEL TO FIRE. THEY KNEW INSTANTLY THAT THEY HAVE FOUND THEIR LOVE.

W

hile we are celebrating same sex relationships only now, for instance movies being produced on same sex love and showcased on the celluloid, for this couple it happened way back in time. Since then there has been no turning back as the future finds rainbow. In conversation with Modish, Suchandra, a passionate photographer, tech geek and graphic designer, shares interesting bits from her life.

Ek ladki ko dekha toh kaisa laga..Tell us about your love story. We met each other for the first time in 2012. It was an instant spark, a tremendous pull we felt towards each other. Before we met in person, we had briefly chatted on Facebook and knew that we were attracted. However, we realized the intensity of our attraction only after we met. It was crazy and deep – just like how they show in the movies. We instantly knew life is going to be more interesting with this one around. You were one of the first lesbian couple in the country. At the time section 377 was in place and views of the society more conservative in comparison to today. What kind of challenges did you face? People have been mostly kind barring few stares and whispers. And once we moved to Chennai, everyone there was cool. They even welcomed us into the building with a cake and invited themselves over for dinner! Having a supportive family and understanding friends makes a world of difference. Were there moments of despair and helplessness? We had a very brief courtship period and hardly 2 meetings before we moved in together. So it was kind of an “arranged relationship/marriage” kind of set up for us. We knew nothing about each other, once we started living together, the flaws were unmissable, and little adjustments, tiny misunderstandings etc. were unavoidable. We decided to grow through these experiences as a couple instead of giving up or splitting up. Here we are today, celebrating our differences, using them to make us complete. This jourMODISH MAGAZINE

ney was not easy, especially with nothing but our love to keep us together. We loved every minute of it and continue bask in the glory of our love. With striking down of section 377 by the Supreme Court, a lot is expected to change. What advice would you like to give to those who are reading this and especially the parents considering home is where the heart is? After the Hon’ble Supreme Court modified IPC 377, there has been a change in terms of police refusing to interfere if two people of the same gender are living together. People are slowly learning to stay quiet on the issue, even if they don’t agree or understand. Parents should be totally open hearted and refuse to be their child’s bully. A lot becomes easier with parental support. The child should feel loved and protected after they come out. This is not a phase, not a disease, not a failure on the parents’ part. It is just who they are and they need to be accepted unconditionally. As an established photographer, did your clients view your same sex relationship as taboo? I have always been unabashedly gay! Out and proud, I have never kept my orientation under the wraps and I am glad that my clients always considered my skills rather than focusing on my orientation, which isn’t their business anyway. What are your future plans? We plan to travel a lot more than we are doing now, which is 3 to 4 times a year at the moment. Being avid animal lovers, we have plans to set up an animal shelter sometime in the future. Sree is also very passionate about doing some wholesome work on creating livelihood options and providing trainings to the queer youth in India. She and her friends are working on giving a structure to this dream. I am trying to assist them in whatever ways I can. Love is that and more. Beautiful, powerful, peaceful, resilient and like water – will eventually finds its way. It is love stories like these that bring out the power of love and give the world reasons to hold on to their definition of love. Because in the end, love will triumph!

The Liberal Netherlands

(more like Portu-gal)

Gay Capital Of The Region

When it comes to progressive laws and equality, the Netherlands is one of the most culturally liberal places in the world and it's certainly the most progressive. In addition to how cool the country is, The Netherlands was also the first country to legalise gay marriage (in 2001). It was also one of the first countries to decriminalise homosexuality in 1811. Various equal rights laws banning discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation were introduced as early as 1994, and in addition, the country has very accessible adoption and transgender policies. Amsterdam is also well known for being a very queer friendly city, with one of the most unique Pride events – an amazing parade that floats on boats through the city’s famous canals.

Portugal began it’s queer friendly legacy by decriminalising homosexuality in 1982 and today has one of the most progressive LGBTQ laws in the world. It also legalised homosexual marriages in 2010 (becoming the 8th country to do so), adoption in 2016 and passed the law of Gender Identity which is one of the most advanced and trans-friendly laws in the world in 2011. Portugal is also one of the few countries to have an outright ban in its constitution against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Lisbon has a fantastic gay scene with many gay bars, clubs and parties; and Porto too is very gay friendly.

Israel is definitely the most progressive country in the Middle East. In fact, many consider Israel to be the gay capital of the region. The country's attitude towards LGBTQ rights is very liberal, especially in Tel Aviv. Every summer, many LGBTQ+ visitors enjoy taking a trip to Tel Aviv to enjoy the best that Israel has to offer. The city is alive with a dazzling nightlife, rich culture and great culinary experiences. Additionally, throughout the year, Tel Aviv is host to a number of queer festivals, events and celebrations, including the hugely popular Tel Aviv Gay Pride. You will just love the Tel Aviv’s beaches and social life, and that just adds to the whole beauty of the country.

Adieu,

Karl LAGERFELD When the World lost a Creative Gem Story by Kashish Sharma

THE ICONIC AND LEGENDARY FASHION DESIGNER KARL LAGERFELD BID FAREWELL TO THE WORLD ON FEBRUARY 19, 2019 IN PARIS AT THE AGE OF 85. THIS HAS COME OUT AS A SHOCK TO THE ARDENT ADMIRERS AND FOLLOWERS OF HIS WORK.

T

he visionary and creative genius Karl Lagerfeld led three esteemed and illustrious brands : Chanel, Fendi and his own line, Karl Lagerfeld. One of the most prolific and celebrated fashion designers of all times, Karl had always been way ahead of his time which was highly evident from the creative contributions he made towards his brands that led to their applauded global success. Lagerfeld began his career in fashion in 1955 as an assistant to Pierre Balmain and in 1967, Karl was hired by Fendi to modernize their fur line. Lagerfeld's innovative designs proved ground-breaking, as he introduced the use of mole, rabbit, and squirrel pelts into high fashion. Lagerfeld eventually went on to become the creative director for the brand and remained with Fendi until his death. He joined Chanel in 1983 and spent 36 years at the helm of the iconic French fashion house. In the words of Chanel's CEO, Alain Wertheimer, “Today, not only have I lost a friend, but we have all lost an extraordinarily creative mind to whom I gave carte blanche in the early 1980s to reinvent the brand.” In 1984, not more than a year after his collaboration with Chanel, Lagerfeld began his own namesake label "Karl Lagerfeld" brand. The brand was established to channel "intellectual sexiness.” In his over half a decade long career, Karl Lagerfeld created and designed innumerable awe-inspiring collections, directed and supervised numerous fashion shows, made careers out of talents and truly carved a magnanimous legacy for himself in the fashion world. Karl Lagerfeld was not only a fashion maestro and a creative force but also made noble charitable contributions and supported a number of foundations ranging from American Foundation for AIDS Research, Breast Cancer Research Foundation, CARE, Cosmic Relief amongst many others. Karl Lagerfeld’s passing away not only shook the world but also served as a grave reminder that the world will never know a force like him and it has been the greatest irreversible loss to the global fashion world. Karl was brilliant, biting and literally the best there ever was. Chanel confirmed that Virginie Viard, Chanel’s studio director and Lagerfeld's right-hand assistant would be succeeding the designer as the Creative Director.

TIPS &TRICKS on how to take care of your LUXURY HANDBAGS and accessories

You don’t want to miss this for sure!! WHEN WE PURCHASE A LUXURY HANDBAG OR PAIR OF SHOES, IT COMES WITH THE EVIDENT EXPECTATION THAT THEY SHOULD LAST US FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME. SADLY, THE FORTUNE WE SPEND ON OUR LUXURY PURCHASES DOESN’T GUARANTEE ITS TIME SPAN. 56

P

ure leather products face their share of wear and tear if they are not taken care of. Luckily for you, there are a few simple steps you can take to ensure that your priced possessions always remain in mint condition.

Different leather types require different care protocols. Keep your leather looking new by using leather conditioners, waterproof sprays and creams that protect leather from moisture under wet conditions. Avoid using hair-dryers or other sources of hot air, which may cause leather to shrink.

In our conversation with Mallika Sharma, founder of The Leather Laundry, we bring to you a complete leather care guide from the most trusted and professional leather repairing ninjas in the country!

SUEDE CARE With suede leathers, a soft brush is recommended. For dry stains on suede, you can use a pencil eraser. In case of a liquid spill, blot quickly, instead of wiping off, to prevent the liquid from seeping in deeper.

1. What's the best way to protect leather without ruining the colour? The first and foremost step towards taking care of your precious leather possessions is to clean them regularly. Leather handbags and shoes should not be stored in air-conditioned rooms, as it not only results in colour loss, but may also escalate fungus due to moisture! Leather should not be exposed to direct sunlight as it will lose colour and natural oils, thus becoming hard and developing cracks.

2. What is the best process for properly cleaning leather? GRAINY & PIGMENTED LEATHER Wipe the surface with a dry muslin cloth to remove the dirt and dust. Then dampen the cloth and wipe it against mild baby soap and lather the leather! Do not rinse hard, buff the leather so it remains supple and retains its sheen!

PATENT LEATHER SHOES & BAGS Take a soft cloth and damp it with water and gently rub it on the surface of the patent leather to remove the dry dirt and dust. Patent leather is highly prone to dye transfers through scuffing and scratching! If the stain is fresh then quickly remove it through the application of petroleum jelly or isopropyl. For patent leathers, prevention is always better than cure! Always store your patent leather bags and shoes in dust bags to prevent them from catching dye from other products! Exposure to sunlight can also cause irreversible color fading on patent leather. Stuff the bag with acid free paper, bubble wrap or clothing and make it sit upright. MODISH MAGAZINE

FASHION NEWS

MODISH

3. How do you avoid leather pealing? Genuine leather never peels! Only PU/faux leather/leatherette peels over time! And there is no solution to keep PU from peeling! Natural animal hide is very durable and natural fibers are sturdy and supple! Leather can develop cracks if it becomes too dry because of dry weather or wear and tear. But it will never peel.

4. What is the best (and worst) way to store leather? LEATHER JACKETS The best way to store a leather jacket is by hanging it on a wide padded hanger. Avoid using plastic bags and instead use cloth bags to store your leather product, as leather needs to breathe. In case you need to iron your leather jacket, a thick sheet of paper/ cloth should be placed between leather and iron to prevent direct exposure to heat.

SHOES Leather shoes need to be stored in a temperature-controlled area that is cool and dry as high moisture and extreme temperatures tend to destroy leather. Make sure you give them a generic cleaning and conditioning treatment once in a while. Patent shoes should be stored in cloth bags as patent is quite prone to dye transfers! If space permits,

HANDBAGS Wipe your bag with a damp cloth to remove dry dust/dirt sitting on the surface after every use. Apply a thin layer of a good leather conditioner and leave it to age for 30 minutes. Then wipe off the surface of the bag with a dry muslin cloth! Handbag reconditioning is recommended atleast once an year. Store the bag in dust bag or pillow cover. Most importantly, do not hang your bag, as it stretches out the handles.

6. Quick tips for stains (oil spots/ ink spills/ watermarks) on your leather: Honestly for all of the above there are endless solutions prescribed on the internet, like using vinegar, alcohol, lemon water etc! However we do not recommend any of these tips, as they are only successful when the stain is fresh! Even then, these methods can go awry and the blotch can become bigger and uglier. We here at TLL, work on all these spots and marks through touch ups and colour restoration! We play with dye/pigments depending on the nature of the leather and the colour in question! If at all, anyone tries these internet prescribed methods at home, we strongly recommend a patch test at an inconspicuous spot, in order to avoid any kind of fatality. Last but not the least, avoid cleaning leather at home and instead consult a professional from time to time. If at all you plan to clean at home, do a patch test first and avoid using hard chemicals.

keep your leather shoes in their original boxes. There should be dedicated shoe racks for each season. Leather boots should be stored upright using a boot stand so that they retain their shape.

5. If you get a mark on a piece, can you dye it? Yes, ofcourse, but one cannot dye at home! The product needs to be taken to a professional dry cleaner who will dye it properly and evenly with an air gun! For lighter colours, we use pigment and for darker colours we use water colour/dye. Upon dyeing, the colour also needs to be fixed with special chemicals to avoid any kind of colour run! We also restore the sheen of the leather post colour correction and condition it to make it softer. MODISH MAGAZINE

With over 30 years of experience in the leather industry, they have a trained workforce who specialize in dry cleaning, conditioning, color restoration and repair of leather goods ranging from bags, shoes, apparel, and sofas!

Most of the fabrics a customer will encounter when ordering a bespoke suit are made from wool, but other options include cotton, linen and luxury fibers like cashmere, vicuña, silk and mohair. For those of you who are just about building up a collection of their suits, we recommend that you pick pure wool as the fabric for your suits because it elegantly drapes a man’s form and is crease-resistant.

GUIDE TO

choosing the right fabric for

YOUR SUIT By Meraki Brothers

Wool is the most popular fabric choice for men due to its versatility and refined aesthetic. Wool is a natural material, which means it breathes well, and can be worn both in the heat of the day or the cool of the night. It is soft and wrinkle free but is sometimes criticized by those wanting lighter, more slimming fabrics. Common wool types include tweed, flannel, cashmere, merino, mohair, and worsted. Contrary to popular belief, wool is not just a winter fabric but also an all-year option for suits. Few of the key characteristics of wool that makes it a popular fabric choice is:

• Breathes easy: Wool is woven and has air pockets. The air pockets trap warmth while the gaps allow ventilation. • Durability: If well maintained, wool will keep for years. • Elasticity: Wool has a springiness that makes for good wrinkle resistance. It retains its shape with natural wrinkle recovery and stretch properties. • Easy to dye: Wool suits are available in any color under the sun. • Water-resistant: Sheep’s coats have a natural water-repellent fat called lanolin. While most of this is removed during processing, wool is still more difficult to soak than cotton. In addition, wool is hydrophilic; it can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch. • Anti-static properties – Wool has natural and anti-static properties, which reduces static electricity in the garment, thereby making the wearer, feel comfortable. MODISH MAGAZINE

fashion Lightweight wools are suitable for tropical climates, whereas heavyweight wools work beautifully to keep out a winter chill. Let us look at some of the types of wool for men’s suiting:

1.MERINO WOOL

The Merino is one of the most historically relevant and economically inf luential breeds of sheep, much prized for its wool. The Merino breed has played a crucial role in the economic development of Spain in the 15th and 16th century, which held a monopoly on its trade, and since the end of the 18th century it was further refined in New Zealand and Australia, giving rise to the modern Merino. By 1870, Australia

had become the largest producer of wool in the world. Later, Australian wool became a ‘must have’, when Coco Chanel made tailored jersey suits for women courtesy the fineness and softness of Australian Merino wool. Most of the top brands like Emenegildo Zegna, Paul Smith, Dior, Armani, Tom Ford, Hugo Boss or the tailors on Savile Row, use Australian Merino wool in their fabric. Merino wool fabrics and suits will always be more expensive than suits made from cotton, man-made fibres, or where wool has been blended with polyester, however when it comes to value for money, men’s suits made from 100% wool or wool-rich suits represent the best investment. The Merino is an excellent forager and very adaptable. Meraki tip: For an everyday suit that is great quality, we recommend a yarn count range of 110’s to 150’s for an all year business suit and fabric weight ranging between 240 to 320 grams is most suitable for the Indian consumer. The number refers the fineness of the individual fibers that are spun into the yarn, which is then woven into the fabric before it is sewn into a suit. The higher the number, the thinner the fibers, the smoother the fabric as well comparatively expensive. MODISH MAGAZINE

2. MOHAIR

MODISH

SILK

Mohair, aka Diamond fiber for its high luster and sheen, is made from the hair of the Angora goat, which makes it different from wool. It is similar to wool with a bit of natural shine to it and a definite crunch to the hand. It performs well and resist wrinkling like no other fabric. The identity of a good mohair is when it can be rolled into a ball, released, and smoothed back out perfectly with barely any effort. It makes for a great spring suit. Mohair has excellent insulating properties, which makes it warm in winter, while remaining cool in summer due to its moisture wicking properties. It is durable, naturally elastic, and crease resistant. Meraki tip: If you have a thing for wrinkle free suits, Mohair is your fabric.

Silk, derived from insects, offers superior comfort, is light, airy, incredibly smooth and is much more expensive than polyester to produce. It is a luxurious, breathable fabric and a natural temperature regulator, helping the body retain heat in cold weather while excess heat is expelled in warm weather. The fabric is most suitable for luxurious events. Given the high maintenance and its likeliness to damage, the fabric needs care like a baby. Silk can be worn in spring, summer, autumn and winter and suits most body types. Meraki tip: A hundred percent silk suit is a rarity. Hence, may not be recommended for business suits. For luxury events, the fabric may be used in combination with wool.

3. CASHMERE

COTTON

Cashmere wool, usually simply known as cashmere, is a fiber obtained from cashmere goats and other types of goat. Cashmere fiber, technically a type of wool, is finer, stronger, lighter, softer and approximately three times more insulating than sheep wool. The fabric is lightweight, offers warmth and feels phenomenal to the hand. Meraki tip: The fabric is quite luxurious and can give an unwanted shine to a suit. Therefore, the fabric may not be the preferred pick for workplace (unless blended with merino wool) but can be a top choice for luxurious events.

LINEN

One of the oldest fabrics to be in existence and widely worn in Europe, linen fabric weighs like a feather and breathes easy thus maintains its coolness in soaring temperatures. Suited best for summer, linen wrinkles easily (a characteristic the consumer needs to fall in love with or look the other way) and requires regular dry cleaning to maintain a fresh and crisp look. Unlike the other fabrics originating from animals, linen comes from a flax plant. Meraki tip: Highly suitable for casual summer outings or the informal Fridays at work. A belnd of wool and linen works best for a suit as it reduces the wrinkles while maintaining the summer texture of linen.

Cotton is that one fabric which can be said to be synonymous with clothing of any and every kind. Such is its mass appeal that cotton has managed to create for itself over the years owing to its properties. Cotton suits move and breathe well but tend to crease easily, which can make the suit look sloppy. They are satisfactory when it comes to softness but lag behind in the luxury department when compared to wool fabrics. As a fabric, cotton is inherently a bit casual and may not be perfect for a business suit. Meraki tip: Choose cotton in the spring, summer and autumn for a semi-formal look to outdoor events. For work, blend cotton with wool as this helps the fabric retain its silhouette. The soul of a suit lies in its fabric and a testimony to your personal fashion, style and outlook. While choosing a fabric and marrying it with occasion and season is no easy task, it is imperative that one sticks to the basic rules when choosing their fabric. Undoubtedly, merino wool performs on all parameters and is suited for most occasions and seasons. Remember, the next time you close in on a suit consult your bespoke tailor in the backdrop of your requirements for that perfect suiting look.

MODERN BOHO

An interesting take on the classic bohemian look; the look is long, languid and sensual, saturated in warm desert and sun kissed hues, clashing geometric prints, scarf dresses, artisan knits, fringes and adorned with necklaces and amulets with astrological or spiritual motifs. COLOUR BLOCKED SUITS The suit is a wardrobe classic. It’s evergreen, well literally and figuratively. This is the season of bold, striking suiting that runs the mile in terms of colour, drape and cut. Skirts, shorts, trousers and jackets came this season in bold, bright shades that can pack a punch as a full look or be mixed up with softer hues and dressed down with denim. Whatever the shape, it’s all about those bold colours. Image Courtesy of: Gucci, Sies Marjan, Roksanda

3.

BOLD PATTERNS

We all know patterns are a way to make powerful statement, but this year we are going the extra mile. Prints this year are going to be worn all-over, clashed merrily and madly with little concern and the result is a glorious, extra and proudly executed mess in eye-burning hues. Started in 1929, the Oscars are a series of awards given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) for excellence in the field of art and technology in the film industry. The winners from numerous categories are each given a copy of a golden statuette, known as the “Academy Award of Merit”. The 91st Academy Awards Ceremony was held on the 24th of February 2019 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Broadcasted on ABC, a total of 3,072 golden statuettes were awarded this year. BILLY PORTER The American stage performer, actor and pop singer set the red carpet on fire with his black custom Christian Siriano tuxedo gown made with velvet material. On one hand, there was tremendous praise for his outfit while a different set of people had the opinion that “A black man in a gown is a threat to the black masculinity” and that was exactly the type of conversation Porter wanted to create. Porter told The Associated Press over phone: “I was ready to create the conversation. We have to teach people how to treat us, we have to teach people how to love us, we have to teach people how to respect us, and the only way we do that is to respect ourselves.”

We all know that she is no stranger to Botox but it’s not the only reason for her flawless looking skin. Besides the regular skincare routine another procedure includes Cupping. However, she has always been open about her routines as she keeps sharing pictures on her Instagram handle. Few days back she also shared a picture of her cupping session. According to a professional “Face Cupping is a technique which is an all natural process which increases blood flow and stimulates the lymphatic system to help reduce inflammation, which in turn smoothes fine lines and wrinkles”. After this process you can feel your facial muscles getting relaxed and tension going away .Well, who wouldn’t take a shot at this right? B) DEMI MOORE’S LEECH FEAST Demi Moore has spilled the beans on her secret to perfect skin:Leech Feast. Korean BEAUTY SECRETS Unveiled Story by Aakanksha Verma

WE WOULD BE LYING IF WE DENIED THE FACT THAT WE ENVY THE FLAWLESS SKIN OF KOREAN MODELS. But whats the secret behind all this glow??

W

ell, we are giving you a chance to steal these Korean beauty secrets and include them in your daily skincare regime. Apart from healthy eating, sleeping better and removing makeup before sleep, these are all the beauty rituals you need to swear by.

and improve blood circulation. It is also said to aid in weight loss. There’s no reason you should wait to add it in your diet plan.

2.

MOISTURISATION: A BLISS Intense moisturisation is what Korean skin care is all about. For maximum benefits, a light water-based hydrator is used. Once it gets absorbed, a heavier, creamier formula to dry-proof the skin, is applied. They believe that your skin needs to be nourished again by the end of the day, that’s the reason Korean women invest in a separate day and night moisturiser. All you have to make sure is that you use a downward motion each time. Take it on the fingertips and rub it for a few seconds to warm it up, just like the Korean beauties do. You can also add serum and essences to the routine for that extra moisturisation.

MASSAGING AND RELAXING Korean massage techniques have found their way to spas and skin clinics in India as well. You can relax your face muscles with these techniques at home too. Use downward, rotating motion rather than circular motion. Start from the forehead, then the cheekbones, cheeks, and working down to the jawbone. Massaging can increase circulation and give you the perfect glow. You can tap a little toner with your fingertips or make use of essential oils to maximize hydration.

3. 1.

MASK IS A MUST One thing we have always heard trending in the Korean beauty market is face mask. Thus it had to be on the top of our list. The variety of masks with different ingredients and essential oils is large. There’s a mask for almost every skin remedy but we are suggesting you the best two options that could do wonders to your skin. The first is charcoal, which detoxes and exfoliates your skin. It is a must have skin care product for every Korean woman. Next has to be the grandma’s favourite, a homemade one. Yes, we are talking about the mixture of egg white and honey. It leaves your skin silky smooth and can be applied on your frizzy mane, too. If you have limited time in your hand, we have an option for you too. Apply an intensive sleeping mask to get rid of all the dullness and recover the skin cells overnight. MODISH MAGAZINE

FACE EXERCISES Just when you thought exercising would keep your body in it’s best shape, here’s another benefit it brings along. Korean women assure us that chanting the vowels ‘A-E-IO-U’ would give our cheeks the right lift. It overall improves the blood circulation to the face. Another face-workout tip includes taking a deep breath to avoid the skin to sag while ageing.

4.

BARLEY TEA Koreans drink Barley tea almost everyday. Depending on the preference, it can be served hot or cold. Boricha, as Koreans call it, is made by adding roasted barley to water and bringing it to a boil. It has numerous health benefits, from improving digestion to curing cold and flu. This nutty-tasting tea contains large amount of antioxidants which help detox

T O P Wellness for Trends 2019 Story by Aakanksha Verma

‘LOOK GOOD, FEEL GOOD’ IS THE MANTRA WE PLAN TO STICK TO BUT WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT IS TO KEEP UP WITH WHAT’S TRENDING IN THE WELLNESS SECTOR TO ACHIEVE THAT GOAL. JUST LIKE ANY OTHER CATEGORY, WELLNESS IS EVER GROWING WITH NEW AND INNOVATIVE IDEAS. SOME OF THESE IDEAS INCLUDE PRACTICES FROM THE OLD TIMES PAVING THEIR WAY BACK TO THE 20TH CENTURY WITH MORE EFFECTIVE USES.

Yoga, meditation and green veggies aren’t enough if you want the best results for your body, mind and overall well being. Some of the recent wellness trends you need to keep up with, include:

2. VEGANISM

1. KETO DIET

The ketogenic diet is a very low-carb, high-fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins and other low-carb diets. It involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain. Ketogenic diet can cause massive reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, has numerous health benefits . A ketogenic diet is an effective way to lose weight and lowers the risk factor for 82

Just when you thought Green tea was healthy enough to start your day with, a new trend has taken hold in the category of beverages. Green coffee beans are coffee seeds (beans) of Coffea fruits that have not yet been roasted. The roasting process of coffee beans reduces amounts of the chemical chlorogenic acid. Therefore, green coffee beans have a higher level of chlorogenic acid compared to regular, roasted coffee beans. Chlorogenic acid in green coffee is thought to have health benefits. As the beans aren’t roasted, it gives a completely different flavour and texture to the drink. Though green coffee has more caffeine than regular coffee. Chlorogenic acid has been linked

uccumbing to a sneeze isn’t a sign of weakness, but it can be avoided if we take the necessary steps to boost our immune system – the stronger our immunity, the less likely we are fall sick. These foods can keep you healthy, prevent falling sick way too often and keep the much dreaded flu season away. Making sure your body gets enough food that help bolster your immune system should be a priority for you and your family. Avoid the germs lurking by including healthy amounts of the following foods in your diet:

SUPERFOODS TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY THESE FOODS CAN KEEP YOU HEALTHY, PREVENT YOU FROM FALLING SICK WAY TOO OFTEN AND KEEP THE MUCH DREADED FLU SEASON AWAY.

1. BROCCOLI Broccoli is s powerhouse packed with vitamins and minerals. Rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as many other antioxidants and fiber, broccoli is one of the healthiest vegetables you can put on your table and eat. While it's super tasty, it is best eaten when barely cooked or raw if you want the full dose of nutrition behind this vegetable.

3. LITERALLY ANY CITRUS FRUIT Vitamin C is the go to food for boosting immunity since they help in the production of white blood cells that help fight infections and they are available in such a huge variety, that they are super easy to add in any way to your diet. They are available in grapefruits, oranges, limes, lemons and tangerines.

4. BELL PEPPERS If you think citrus fruits hold the monopoly of being packed with Vitamin C, you’re dead wrong. Bell peppers hold the same amount of the vitamin as any citrus fruit, ounce for ounce. They are also a rich source of beta carotene, that helps keep your eyes and skin healthy. And besides boosting your immune system, Vitamin C can help you maintain healthy skin, so it can help improve the quality of your skin. 5. YOGURT Yogurt, specifically Greek yogurt, actively keeps the gastrointestinal tract free from germs, bacteria and other pathogens from entering the bloodstream and making you sick. 2. WHITE MEAT Poultry, such as chicken and turkey, is high in vitamin B-6. Vitamin B-6 is an important player in many of the chemical reactions that happen in the body. It’s also vital to the formation of new and healthy red blood cells. Broth or soups made from poultry contain gelatin, chondroitin, and other nutrients helpful for gut healing and immunity. Shellfish, on the other hand, are packed with zinc. Zinc doesn’t get as much attention as many other vitamins and minerals, but it is needed by our bodies so that our immune cells can function as intended. immune system. Thus, you can understand why is it important to keep your gut happy. But to make sure you get the kind with no added preservatives and sugar to reap the full benefits. MODISH MAGAZINE

6. PAPAYAS Papaya is another great fruit loaded with vitamin C, the benefits of which I have highlighted earlier. You can find the daily recommended amount of vitamin C in a single papaya. Papayas are also rich in a digestive enzyme called papain that has anti-inflammatory effects. Papayas have pretty good amounts of potassium, B vitamins and folate, all of which are beneficial to your overall health and immune system.

7.ALMONDS When it comes to preventing illnesses and fighting off colds, Vitamin E tends to take a backseat to Vitamin C. But don't forget that Vitamin E is really important to a healthy immune system. It is a fat-soluble vitamin, which means that it requires the presence of fat to be absorbed properly. Nuts, such as almonds, are packed with Vitamin E and also are packed with healthy fats that are important for the body’s metabolism. Eating a handful a day can also help reduce your cravings for bulky, filling foods. 8.CINNAMON Cinnamon is a major must need for your diet: it is an antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial beast, so it does more than just boost the immune system — it fights the pathogens that cause illness. Cinnamon is also extremely versatile and delicious, making it easy to add to your healthy diet. You can add it to your coffee, desserts or smoothies. 9.KIWIS They are quite like papayas; kiwis are naturally full of a lot of essential nutrients, including folate, potassium, vitamin K, and vitamin C. Vitamin C boosts white blood cell production in the body to fight infection, while kiwi’s other nutrients keep the rest of your body functioning properly.

which is a must need for those with heart issues.

10. GREEN TEA Green tea helps fight inflammation and slows the ageing of cells (thank you, antioxidants), it can help lessen wrinkle development and make your skin appear brighter. The flavonoids present in green tea can help elevate metabolic rate and increase fat oxidation, thus help you reduce weight. Green tea is great for strengthening immune agents, protecting against oxidative stress that causes cell damage and prevent autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, green tea is considered to be highly beneficial for the human body. 11. CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES Cauliflower, spinach and brussels sprouts are all cruciferous vegetables, which means that they’re not only rich in antioxidant vitamins that give an immune system boost, but they also contain choline, a nutrient essential to a healthy diet. Choline helps keeps your cells functioning properly and also helps support a healthy gastrointestinal barrier, keeping bacteria safely confined in the gut. Cauliflower, in particular, is a beneficial food to eat when you're sick because it’s also rich in glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that helps fight off infections and pathogens. And spinach is rich in beta carotene that helps with keeping your skin and eyes healthy.

12. GARLIC Garlic’s immune-boosting properties seem to come from it’s heavy concentration of sulfur-containing compounds, such as allicin, which help fight infections and pathogens that enter your body. Garlic can also help lower blood pressure and slow down hardening of the arteries,

13.WATER Water helps to oxygenate the blood found in our body, and that pumps up our cells and helps them function at full capacity. Healthy cells that are packed with oxygen mean that our muscles and organs are firing on all cylinders – thus helping us feel our best and allowing our bodies to enjoy a superior immunity against pathogens and germs. Water can do wonders for your body, especially when it works as an immune system booster. Thanks to water’s miraculous properties, you can take advantage of this extremely versatile, natural immune booster in order to help improve your health and well-being.

14.GINGER Ginger is another ingredient many turn to when falling sick. Ginger can help decrease inflammation, which can help reduce a sore throat and other inflammatory illnesses, like arthritis and muscle pain. Ginger may also help decrease nausea, this applies to sea sickness, chemotherapy-related nausea, nausea after surgery and morning sickness. Ginger may help decrease chronic pain and may possess cholesterol-lowering properties. Some studies indicate that ginger helps with menstrual cramps. Go the extra mile and start planning your meals to include these 13 powerful immune system boosters. There’s no need to worry about your general health as long as you’re drinking enough water and eating enough– if you find yourself particularly susceptible to a streaming or congested nose, it may be a subtle sign from your body that you are not consuming enough in your day.

H

ere’s a not so hidden fact, food is a medium of communication with our body. Our body responds or behaves on the basis of the signals received. To use the age old cliché, of using only the best fuel for your brand new car (which may be very expensive but after all, is replaceable) as this will impact how the car will run, how fast it goes and how it ages – so in the same context , we need to be gravely conscious of taking care of our own machinery aka our body through careful consideration of our consuming habits, avoiding inappropriate foods and not just grab anything impulsively just because it entices our taste buds. We need to rethink if we are doing justice to our body with the 'eat to live' philosophy. Just in case you need to be reminded again, your body is irreplaceable and only you can feed, respect and NOURISH it. What you eat is what you are and it cannot be overemphasised.

which was an instant success. Their soon to be launched products that are going to join the ranks of their already successfully selling product range are probiotic chocolate cup and Flavoured kombuchas. What led Manisha to this journey of launching PRO GUT FOODS has an interesting and heartfelt background story. “My husband suffered from IBS for the longest time. Wanting to help him, I started looking for a permanent solution aggressively. The quest made me interact with my counterparts across the globe, study research papers, engage with nutritionists and health coaches in the U.S and Europe. She believes that Tarot cards can help in clearing your mind and give you a new perspective towards life and love. Let’s take a look at what your tarot cards reveal exactly and what the months of March, April and May have in store for you!

ARIES

The cards predict a very good balance between your health and wealth. You might acquire a big position or promotion work wise while upgrading yourself on a professional front. Just keep your focus straight on the thing that you’re currently pursuing and you will be blessed with success in no time. Tip: You need to set your priorities and take on things, one day at a time, Lucky Number: 9, Lucky Color: Purple
