Love your Liver... Particularly at this time of year

At the time of reading this, many of you will be enjoying preChristmas festivities with excesses of food and alcohol.

Did you know that the very best things to support and protect your precious liver from over-indulgence are actually natural solutions from the plant world! One in particular is Milk Thistle, which has many thousands of scientific studies verifying its effective protective effect on the liver.

Milk Thistle is traditionally used in Western herbal medicine as an antioxidant that protects the liver and supports its function. There are seven isomers in Milk Thistle that are collectively called Silymarin.

Globe artichokes are also traditionally used in Western herbal medicine as a choleretic to increase bile flow, to better break down incoming and stored fats, and to help relieve digestive disturbances such as dyspepsia.

Bupleurum is used in traditional Chinese medicine to spread the liver ‘qi’ and relieve constraint. It is also used when there is disharmony between the liver and the spleen, with symptoms such as abdominal bloating, nausea and indigestion.

Glutathione is often referred to as the ‘master antioxidant’ – an accurate description, given that it is the most abundant endogenous antioxidant and a key regulator of oxidative stress and immune function in our body. Glutathione is involved in detoxification and elimination of metabolic by-products.

There are quite a few liver formulas in the market, but it’s really important for a really effective result that you get a formula that has the clinical trials behind the active ingredients – and also that the formula contains standardised ingredients, so that you know the amount you are truly getting and that the formula really is ‘active’. Don’t just accept any general formula.
