Have you considered Warranties on your Purchases?

1 year Warranty

You may have purchased a new product – a printer, a heatpump, or a new car; have you read the warranty? If not, perhaps now is the time. Certainly, we recommend you read the warranty before you have the product serviced, and before you install parts or consumables, to ensure you don’t void the warranty.

Warranties

Many products come with a 1-year warranty. In some cases, extended warranties are also available. It is important that you are familiar with your product warranty, particularly if you want to rely on it in the future.

We recommend when you read your warranty that you check whether:

•you are required to provide a copy of your purchase receipt; if so, perhaps scan it or take a photo of it, email it to yourself and keep it in a receipts folder in your email;

•you are required to use genuine parts, or specified consumables. In some cases, branded parts or consumables may not be required. However, if you use non-genuine parts and they cause damage, your warranty may not cover the cost of any damage caused; and

•you are required to use an authorised service centre or service provider.

If something does happen to your product, and your warranty does not cover the damage, you may want to consider whether consumer guarantees are relevant.

Consumer Protection

An individual’s rights as a consumer are protected under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. The Act sets out minimum guarantees that apply to goods and services for household use. For example, you may be able to get a refund, repair or replacement item if a product or service does not suit the normal purpose for which it was purchased, or doesn’t last as long as it should. Some exceptions do apply.

There is a wealth of information online with respect to consumer protection, however, and particularly if the purchase is a highvalue item. If you are unsure whether the warranty or guarantees apply, our team are happy to assist. Call us on 09 486 3058.
