Choosing an affordable whisky for Christmas is always a challenge (there are many excellent Christmas whiskies, but few are as affordable as this). However, we believe that we have found one that represents good value – the Tamnavulin Double Cask Speyside Single Malt.

The Tamnavulin distillery, founded in 1966, was ‘silent’ for a number of years before reopening in 2007 under Whyte & MacKay ownership. This, their first expression of a single malt, batch, numbered 0308, is matured in American oak barrels before being finished in ex-sherry casks.

Nose: Creamy sweet chocolate, stewed apple and mixed berries.

Palate: Christmas cake, toffee-coated barley with chocolate brownie overtones.

Finish: Moderate length, with a spiced rum sweetness on the finish.

Conclusion: Good value at this price point. A tiny drop of water (and I mean tiny) brings improvement to the palate.
