B

rothers of the Mighty Sixth District, I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, “the Supreme Basileus of the Universe!” Brothers, I am honored to have been elected as your 40th Sixth District Representative. Thank you for the confidence that you have expressed in me at the 71st Annual Meeting held in Myrtle Beach, SC. I look forward to fulfilling my duties in this office with honesty, integrity and fidelity. The Brothers of the Mighty Sixth District were instrumental in re-electing our 40th Grand Basileus, Brother Antonio F. Knox, Sr. at the 80th Grand Conclave in Las Vegas, NV. We embrace his vision for the Fraternity, “We Are One!” As Omega Men, must continue to mentor our youth, provide food, clothing and support to the needy, register our people to vote, and fulfill our mandated programs. We must remain guardians of the social and political accomplishments won by those who have gone before us. Brothers, the current social and political climate will demand more of Omega Men. The Mighty Sixth District has clearly raised the bar and I am challenging each of you to continue its legacy of leadership in this regard. I am particularly excited to continue the legacy begun by Former District Representatives. We will continue with the Bro. Benjamin E. Mays Historical Project, the E.E. Just Symposium, and the Walter H. Mazck Burial Site. The Mighty Sixth District will partner with corporations and companies located within our boundaries to forge long-lasting collaborations. We will leave an indelible social action footprint in the communities that we serve. Bless you and your families, and bless the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. nearest our hearts! Thank you again for electing me to this esteemed position. I look forward to serving you. Please don’t hesitate to call on me if I can be of assistance in any manner. Fraternally, Howard Jackson Howard Jackson 40th District Representative

he members of the Mighty Sixth District ascended upon one of the nation’s most popular vacation destinations to hold its 71st Annual Meeting. Delegates and their families were housed at the comfortable confines of the Sheraton Hotel and Convention Center and were able to enjoy several days of great weather along the Grand Strand. Several corporations were present and had representatives on hand to expose our undergraduate members to career opportunities with their respective organizations. The new executive team was assembled after several tight races yielding several familiar faces and a few new ones. Our 40th Grand Basileus Brother Antonio F. Knox Sr. was at home in the Mighty Sixth and facilitated several of our programs. As things came to a conclusion, all eyes now turned to Greensboro, North Carolina, the site of the 72nd Annual meeting.

rother Michael Morgan delivered a stirring speech as the keynote speaker at the Sunday Morning breakfast. Known as “the judge” to many throughout the district, he reminded the audience of those who he often encounters in his daily line of work and how the disparities of wealth, class and race continue to impact our society and what we must do as Omegamen to stem the tide for those less fortunate members of our communities.

T

he annual Talent Hunt competition displayed a lineup of the best of musical talent of our youth across the Carolinas. Our registered members, families and guests witnessed performances on a variety of instruments as well as several vocalists who are well on their way performing on major venues in the very near future. The winner of this year’s competition went on to represent the Mighty Sixth District at our Grand Conclave in Las Vegas Nevada. Talent Hunt and the Boys Summer Camp programs are focal points of the agenda of our current District Representative as the executive is working on securing corporate sponsorship for these programs.

STATE POLITICS

NORTH & SOUTH

As part of our commitment to the political process in terms of voter participation and education, the Mighty Sixth District continues to play a role in the political arena through the Carolinas. In both states, Omega men assemble on the state capitols and meet with legislators to advocate for various causes and discuss issues impacting our local communities. On April 20th, 2016 members met with several state legislatures at the South Carolina state capitol in Columbia, South Carolina. On May 19th, 2016,

members did the same at the North Carolina state capitol in Raleigh. In Raleigh, the Brotherhood joined forces with members of the Divine Nine panhellenic organizations. The events were spearheaded in North and South Carolina by Brothers Voris McBurnette and Craig Sweeney respectively. These events are held annually and Brothers are encouraged to participate so we can continue to be the voice for those who may not be in position to effectively do so for themselves.

he night of June 17th 2015 will forever be etched into the list of horrific national tragedies as a lone gunman entered the bible study of Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston and killed nine of its members and leaving only three survivors in the study area and two in the Pastor’s office, his wife and one of his two children. State Senator and Church Pastor Reverend Clemente Pinckney, Reverends Daniel Simmons, Depayne Middleton-Doctor, Sharonda Coleman-Singleton, Suzie Jackson, Ethel Lee Lance, Myra Thompson, Cynthia Graham Hurd, and Tywanza Sanders were among the victims. Polly Sheppard, Felecia Sanders (mother of Tywanza) and her five-year old granddaughter were the survivors of the tragic event. The shooting has left the nation and the world transfixed as to how such a horrific act can take place in such a peaceful place that most would associate with a sanctuary.

s the Charleston community continues to heal and move past the events on that fateful day, The Mother Emanuel family held its first anniversary observance on June 17th 2016 at the College of Charleston’s TD Arena and held its first annual Sunday morning service on June 2016. The Brotherhood of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated were in attendance and filled several rows of pews at the service. In attendance were 40th Grand Basileus Brother Antonio Knox, Sixth District Representative Brother Howard Jackson and members of the Mu Alpha Chapter. Immediate Past Basileus of the Mu Alpha Chapter Brother Nathaniel Jackson presented Pastor Betty Deas Clark with an interactive digital chip that would be later installed on a bronze marker presented by the Chapter in honor of the Emanuel Nine that will be dedicated on

Sixth District Representative Brother Howard Jackson presented a donation of one thousand dollars on behalf of the members of the Sixth District. Brother Knox presented the church’s Pastor Rev. Betty Deas Clark with a donation of nine thousand dollars on behalf of the Fraternity in honor of the victims of the shooting one year earlier. As he stood before the congregation Brother Knox shared his reaction to hearing the news as he received on the fateful night of June 17th, “I felt the hurt as many of you and had thoughts that the leader of a Christian based organization shouldn’t have and I called on my Grand Chaplain and together we prayed” stated 40th Grand Basileus Brother Knox. “Had it not been for this shirt though, it would have probably been the Emanuel 11” - Keith Jones Jr. were impacted by the events on that fateful evening, were the organizations that several of the victims were members of. Several Divine Nine Pan-Hellenic organizations were not spared from the tragic event. Reverend Pinckney was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha and Reverend Simmons, a member of Phi Beta Sigma. Hurd and Singleton were members of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Thompson a member of Delta Sigma Theta. Although several members of Omega are members of the church none were loss to the shooting. Brother Keith Jones Sr. , a member of the Mu Alpha Chapter, left church that evening after attending a meeting for an approaching A.M.E. conference and left to meet his son, Keith Jones Jr. at a local store to purchase a shirt. It would be a decision that may have spare his life and that of his son.

Keith Jones, Jr, blowing some time prior to bible study, went to a local H&M store to buy a shirt while his dad was at the conference meeting. Before purchasing it he called his father to discuss it with him and as fathers do, Jones Sr. went to meet his son to see the shirt in question at the meeting’s end. Upon seeing the shirt, Jones Sr. described it as “ugly as hell” and the two laughed and then went home, unaware of the circumstances that they narrowly avoided. On a recent Facebook posting Jones Jr. reflecting on the events and shared the fact that the two went back and purchased the shirts that may have spared their lives. “Had it not been for this shirt though, it would have possibly been the Emanuel 11,” stated Jones Jr. top photo: Keith Jones Jr. and Keith Jones Sr. bottom photo: Jones and Knox
