A message from the District Representative Brothers of the Mighty Sixth District, I greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ, “the Supreme Basileus of the Universe!” I am honored to serve as your 40th Sixth District Representative. Again, thank you for the confidence that you have expressed in me at the 72nd Annual Meeting held in Greensboro, NC. I look forward to continuing to fulfill my duties in this office with honesty, integrity and fidelity. I recognize the rich heritage of leadership in the “Mighty Sixth District” and I will continue to hold this office and our District in high esteem. The Brothers of the Mighty Sixth District will continue to support and embrace the theme of our 40th Grand Basileus, Brother Antonio F. Knox, Sr.; “We Are One!” At the 2017 Leadership Conference in Cincinnati, OH, the Supreme Council overwhelmingly selected Charlotte, NC as the host city for the International Grand Conclave in 2022. Charlotte, NC most recently hosted the very successful 2002 International Grand Conclave. I was honored to represent the “Mighty Sixth District” at both the Memorial Service and the funeral services for Bro. (Dr.) Moses C. Norman, Sr. in Atlanta, GA. Bro. Norman was the longest tenured Grand Basileus and I have truly valued his friendship and mentorship, “Job well done thy good and faithful servant.” Economic Development has been selected as the theme and focal point for the Sixth District during the 2017-18 fraternity year. The District’s Economic Development Committee has been charged with providing programs with measureable outcomes at each of the District Council Meetings. Our goal is to empower economic independence in the District and to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve. I will continue to embrace the legacy started by Former Sixth District Representatives. We will continue to provide leadership for both the NC and SC Divine Nine Legislative Day. We will continue to strengthen our partnerships with organizations such as the NAACP, as well as, colleges and universities within our boundaries. We will leave an indelible social action footprint in the communities that we serve. May God continue to bless you and your families, and bless the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. nearest our heart! Sincerely,

Howard Jackson

Mu Psi Celebrates 90 Years in Omega By Brother Christian Kornegay-White On the weekend of March 24, 2017, the Mu Psi Chapter celebrated their 90th Chapter Anniversary in Greensboro, North Carolina on the campus of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Over the past 90 years, the brothers of Mu Psi have upheld the cardinal principles of Omega Psi Phi: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift. As representatives of Omega Psi Phi, the brothers of Mu Psi work toward fostering the uplift of all men through their commitment to enhancing and improving the campus of North Carolina A&T State University, the City of Greensboro, as well as countless other institutions, organizations, and cities in which we operate and reside. In 90 years, Mu Psi has successfully produced a countless number of successful black male engineers, medical doctors, educational professionals, politicians, actors, and community leaders. Brothers of the Mu Psi Chapter not only uphold and promote the ideals of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., but they also maintain a high standard of excellence and service www.omega6d.org

to the communities in which they reside. The chapter honors itself as of being home to outstanding individuals such as Ellis F. Corbett, Asa T. Spaulding, Warmouth T. Gibbs, Henry Faulkner, Jesse Jackson, Sr., Dr. Ronald McNair, and the list goes on and on. Over 300 people came out to fellowship during the celebration weekend, with various events planned. The celebration began on Friday, March 24th with our Golf Tournament and Cookout that welcomed all alumni and current brothers, families, and friends. The chapter then followed up on Saturday with the most anticipated event of the weekend, the Mardi Gras Gala. The Gala served as the chapter’s fundraising event in hopes of establishing an Endowed Scholarship that was later presented to the Chancellor of North Carolina A&T State University for young men to attend and be successful in their various academic endeavors. The weekend ended on Sunday when the chapter gathered for a church service at Mt. Zion AME, where they also presented the pastor with a monetary gift. This weekend was a chance not only to celebrate Mu Psi’s historic achievements, but for brothers to reconnect, as there was representation from all lines back to 1949 in attendance. Most importantly the weekend gave Mu Psi an opportunity for the chapter to give back and thank those who have supported them throughout its existence. 7

The Colcloughs L-R Sean, Richard, Brother David Colclough, Mckenzie, Madison and wife Melanie Colclough

Gabriel’s Purpose

By Brother Kurt Walker

Brother David Colclough, a spring 2017 initiate of

22

the Gamma Iota Chapter of Sumter, South Carolina has gained a new perspective and meaning of faith. His has been tested, rebuilt and redefined. He and his wife Melanie have endured the pain of loss, only to find that it was through their shared faith, that they achieved more than they could have imagined or ever dreamed or hoped for and this is their story. The two met when they were seven years old and knew each other through their high school years in Manning, South Carolina. Always friends both attended the University of South Carolina but ran in different circles. In their adult years they would both live in the cities of Columbia and Atlanta but still didn’t reconnect or cross paths. According to Brother Colclough “we know now, that was just God preparing us, because all along that was his plan, we weren’t ready…because if 18 year-old David and Melanie had gotten together it never would have worked.” Melanie would say, “we both travelled pretty extensively for our ages being from a small town of Manning…one of the reasons I think all that had to happen was we both

needed to be okay living right here in Sumter, South Carolina in the time that God wanted us to.” They reconnected after both came back to the area. Brother Colclough to care for his parents and Melanie relocated while doing her graduate studies. After what he felt were unsuccessful attempts to find the perfect mate Brother Colclough prayed on it and asked for God’s assistance, and it was six months later that Melanie reached out to him. Melanie would reach out to Brother Colclough via Facebook and the two went out, as friends and it wouldn’t be until Melanie returned from graduate studies in New York that the two would work together on a high school reunion committee that the two finally made a connection. They would marry and plan for a rather large family. Both had a desire for nine children. To get there the two were open to adoption to each other’s surprise. Although they carefully planned their family, an unexpected occurrence took place to the delight of them both. A son, who they named Gabriel, was conceived but was lost suddenly due to a placental abruption in his 36th week. Although they lost Gabriel, the Colcloughs knew that they could achieve a child through natural birth, adoption could still be an option for them. Losing www.omega6d.org

www.omega6d.org

Gabriel brought them closer together as they had to support each other through the pain of loss. “When we lost Gabriel, I got a chance to see my husband and it was beautiful… because he stepped up like a man, he put his feelings aside to be there for me” said Melanie. The period was a difficult one and to persevere through it, each found strength in the other and it brought them closer to their shared faith. “We chose to cling to each other, we chose to cling to God and it brought us to the ministry…and we actually went in that time, went through credentialing to become ministers in the Church of God” stated Melanie. When the couple struggled to cope through the mourning and grief process after losing their son, they sought out a Christian based counselor but they were unable to find one. After much diligence and support from their pastor and church, the Colcloughs then looked within and decided to answer a call that had been yearning in each of them, a call to ministry.

Melanie and David as they were expecting the birth of their first child whom they named Gabriel. Gabriel was loss during the pregancy due to a placental abruption while in the 36th week

T

he Colcloughs reached out to Marie Harvin who is the mother of one of their high school classmates. Harvin adopted a number of children after her own grew into adulthood. She connected Melanie with an adoption agency, Adoption Advocacy, located in Spartanburg, South Carolina. They learned early that with foster care adoptions they tended to involve multiple children due to the unfortunate fact that sibling groups are not a rarity to the foster care system, because when a parent loses a child to child services, often all of the children in that individual’s care are all also taken as well. So when Melanie initially contacted Brother Colclough about an opportunity to adopt two sets of twins under the age of four, who were brothers and sisters, his spiritual voice intervened. “Melanie sent me a text message at work saying what do you think of adopting two sets of twins under the age of four…I was in the middle of typing a message saying woman are you cra-. I was in the middle of typing c-r-a when the holy spirit tapped me on the shoulder and said what if this is what I have for you? I said if that’s what you have for me Lord I am good with that and I responded to her and said let’s pray about it and if that is God’s will then that’s what we will do.” Although they didn’t get that initial four they did settle on another four. While they were planning for the new additions to their family, the Colcloughs even needed to lean on their faith when searching for their new home. “Everything that could go wrong went wrong…the whole 23

time we said Lord we’ve done our part, it’s up to you” stated Brother Colclough. Six months later the Colcloughs’ closed on their new home. The executive director of the adoption agency reached out to Melanie after taking a personal interest in the Colcloughs’ case. She had also lost a child in the same manner and also like the fact that the Cocloughs’ participated in the guardians-at-lightem program, so they now had an advocate who assisted in speeding up the process and united Madison, McKenzie, Richard and Sean with the Colcloughs. They had two weeks to prepare for the children to enter their home. That meant selecting schools, car seats, a bigger car and furniture, getting airline tickets. “It was hard but definitely not as hard as we anticipated,” stated Melanie. With the children’s arrival it was now a matter of getting to know them, making the connections. It was assumed that Madison was the oldest of the twin girls. She’s a bit larger in size and seemed a bit more mature. In a discussion about which was older, Madison professed to the Colcloughs that it was McKenzie who was the oldest, because she watched her come out first. To the Colcloughs surprise it was confirmed with the arrival of the amended birth certificates it was indeed McKenzie, and not Madison, who was the oldest. McKenzie (6), the talker, the social butterfly, A loving note from a loving daughter to a loving mother the one who kept the kids together. She let the Colcloughs know which items belonged to which sibling as well as likes and dislikes. Brother Colclough described her as the mother hen. Melanie noticed McKenzie observing her interactions with the kids and asked, “can I help you?” to which she replied, “no, I just want to watch you work with them”. Awestruck, Melanie stated “it warmed my heart and made me sad and happy at the same time.” Richard (4), the inquisitive one, wants to figure how things work, spiritually minded, has an understanding of the bible beyond his years. Sean (3), the comedian, has a keen sense of humor. Sensitive Mommy I want to make you happy is one of his favorite phrases. Because the children came from Texas they would have to reside with the Colcloughs for a sixmonth period, according to state law, before the court could finalize the official adoption. Madison, who was the most skeptical, finally believing that this would be her home, released her guard and was at peace with having a permanent home. Not by coincidence or chance, but a divine plan. “I think that as believers we forget that this isn’t our final destination. We didn’t live to be here. This isn’t the reason we are here on earth…we are not here for ourselves…and when you lose someone, the depth of your faith is really tested because we say we believe…but until you have to show you believe it, you don’t know how deep your faith is and that is together. “It helps us tell the God story because we tell them all of time not to be mad at their birth mother, or the what Gabriel did for us. Keeping Our Veterans In The Know By Brother Kurt Walker Omega Psi Phi Fraternity is deeply rooted in military service as displayed by the service of two of our founders and the many brothers who were among the first to achieve their commissions among those who served at Fort Des Moines, Iowa in the early part of the twentieth century. Military service is no stranger to many of our members and the dedication of some of our brothers to ensure that our veterans are properly informed of their benefits has become the mission of some, as is the case for Brother Johnnie Richardson Jr. Brother Johnnie Richardson Jr., a spring 1982 initiate of the Phi Epsilon Chapter University of Buffalo, obtained his degree in Sociology. He would enter the ranks of the United States Armed Forces in 1983 becoming a member of the Marine Corps where he would serve until 1989. Brother Richardson would serve in such places as Cherry Point, Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and Okinawa Japan. He currently serves on the International Veterans Affairs Committee chaired by Brother Jack Martin. Brother Richardson was also appointed by then Sixth District Representative Brother Brian Beverly as the District’s Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman. He also currently serves on the International Headquarters’ security team and protocol committee.

Brother Richardson as he prepares to meet with brothers at a district council meeting.

Vegas, Nevada the Military Salute Program was handled as a separate entity and will be tied in with the registration package going forward. Brother Richardson stated, “it’s an excellent source of information through the Military Salute Program and the salute programs are now tied together with the International Veterans Affairs committee…so we can work with both of them as one unit.” Brother Richardson also mentioned that the committee is currently working to get the fraternity’s second honorary member, Colonel Charles Young, a posthumous promotion to the rank of General. “Right now we are still waiting, but we have a proposal before congress to get him his star” stated Brother Richardson.

The committee’s primary mission is to setup at events and collect data of all the military veterans throughout the Sixth District and then filter the data to inform veterans of the various benefits that they may be entitled to including The committee is also hard at work promoting disability claims, educational benefits. Brother Richardson awareness of other issues related to veteran isis also responsible for the Pi Phi Chapter’s Veterans Day sues and other fraternity initiatives. “Omega Psi program, which he has been done for the past 8 years. This past Veterans Day the chapter honored two World War II veterans, Brothers Odell Robinson and Pete Allen. The chapter also had a ceremonial coin produced that was given to every military veteran of the chapter. Currently Pi Phi Chapter has 67 veterans who are members of the chapter.

According to Brother Richardson there were three suicides committed by military veterans within the last six years. His call is for brothers of the fraternity to be aware of the need for mental health awareness but the need for brothers to be aware of the available resources and to help each other. “If they don’t know, they wouldn’t know where to turn or who to turn to” stated Brother Richardson. cont’d from page 20

Tau Omega Assists with Paper Shredding Program and Breakfast By Brother Wilson Lester

Greensboro, NC - The brothers of Tau Omega are at it again. On May 9, 2017, the chapter helped 822 families get rid of old papers and items no longer needed and yet to be discarded. Since 2014 Tanya Rivera from News 2 has coordinated with the Social Action Committee to help the community get recycled old electronics, assist families with registration tags for pets so they don’t get lost, and this year shredding old items. The brothers maintained traffic for the cars and aided individuals with removing items to be shredded from their vehicles. On July 29, 2017, the brothers of Tau Omega assembled and served over 100 hungry souls at the Urban Ministry complex in Greensboro, NC. At 5:30 am the brothers began to crack eggs, and prepare grits. As people filed in and were seated prayer was delivered and youth from the community assisted with taking plates to tables. A homeless mother of four reminded the Basileus, how important days like this were for her family and thanked the brothers for their service. www.omega6d.org

Bridge Builder by Will Allen Dromgoole

An old man going a lone highway, Came at the evening, cold and gray, To a chasm, vast, and deep and wide, Through which was flowing a sullen tide.

The old man crossed in the twilight dim; The sullen stream had no fear for him; But he turned, when safe on the other side, And built a bridge to span the tide.

"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim, near, "You are wasting strength with building here; Your journey will end with the ending day; You never again will pass this way; You've crossed the chasm, deep and wide-‐Why build you this bridge at the evening tide?"

The builder lifted his old gray head: "Good friend, in the path I have come," he said, "There followeth after me today, A youth, whose feet must pass this way.

This chasm, that has been naught to me, To that fair-‐haired youth may a pitfall be. He, too, must cross in the twilight dim; Good friend, I am building this bridge for him." Fraternally,

FAQ’s for appropriate photography for Sixth District publications: What is appropriate attire? As an Omega you should appear neatly dressed. Nothing should be worn that is profane or vulgar. Absolutely no canine references should appear on your clothing or accessories. What is an acceptable pose? As an Omega man, you should always appear as gentleman. There should be no explicit poses or gestures. Utilize good judgment. Stand tall placing hands at sides, or crossed in front or behind, or being seated. What items should not appear in photos? Be sure to remove all items that could be considered inappropriate. A good example of this is clearly identifiable alcohol beverage containers. These standards also apply to photos and/or images that may appear on internet platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. When in doubt, please consult with your chapter officers for clarification or more detailed information.
