Lady Tigers softball team have it all together

Kristy Leal said she’s never seen a team like the one she has this year – and that’s a good thing.

“Their chemistry is amazing,” the first-year Lady Tigers softball coach said. “Of

all the areas, that’s the best thing about them. I’ve never seen a team work together like this one has.”

Mercedes had a 7-1 record going into Tuesday’s game against District 32-5A leader Browsnville Veterans, with an 8-0 record. The Lady Tigers’ only loss came to the Chargers earlier in the season at Mercedes.

As of late, Mercedes has been on a roll with victories over Donna (17-2) and Donna North (21-0). Sophomore Mika Vento and freshman Kassidie Rodriguez earned the wins in those to games. In the most recent win, the Lady Tigers pounded out 16 hits led by senior Sams Flores with a 4-for-4 performance including three singles a double and four RBI.

Music artists offer guitar sales, lessons, instrument repair

By Henry Miller Mercedes Enterprise It seems that every team at every level in baseball are looking for the powerful knockout punch – the grand slam, the next Aaron Judge or Giancarlo Stanton.

That’s not the style of play Mercedes head coach Armondo Reyes is using this season – but his style is just as exciting.

“We have to manufacture runs – we’re not going to be hitting a lot of home runs,” the Mercedes coach said since the beginning of the year. We’re going to run.”

And run they do.

The Tigers will hit-and-run, steal bases and if a defender flinches, the Tigers will be taking an extra base. While the Tigers finished the first half of District 32-5A play with a 2-4 record, they are still right in the thick of things when it comes to making a run at the postseason.

“We’ve been traditionally a second half team,” Reyes said. “So lets see how things go.”

Mercedes Lions Club to hold annual canal fishing contest The Mercedes Lions Club will hold a Canal Fishing Contest from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. on April 14 at the main canal from 10th to 17th Streets in Mercedes.

Entry fee is $5 and there will be prizes awarded in each of the following categories: Heaviest fish, Longest fish, and Most Unusual fish. Registra-

tion for children and adults will begin at 7 a.m. on the day of the tournament.

The contest is open to all.

After the fishing tournament there

will be a Chupacabra Floating Egg Race at the same location. UTRGV Chess Coach GM Bartek Macieja proudly displays the President’s Cup trophy, awarded to the UTRGV Chess Team as the 2018 National Champions of the Final Four of College Chess competition.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Chess Team pulled off a stunning win over five-year reigning national champs Webster University this weekend in the annual President’s Cup, the Final Four of College Chess competition, at the Marshall Chess Club in New York City.

UTRGV beat Webster 7.5 to 7.0 after what FIDE arbiter Mike Hoffpauir called “the strongest Final Four in the history of this tournament.”

Teams in the Final Four this year were St. Louis University, Webster University, Texas Tech and UTRGV. UTRGV President Guy Bailey said this is an exciting win for the team, for the university, and for the Valley community, which has been so supportive of the Vaqueros team “We are extremely proud of our chess team and admire the hard work and effort they put into every competition,” Bailey said. “Winning the President’s Cup is indeed a great honor for our chess team, for UTRGV and for the Rio Grande Valley. We congratulate them on their win.”

The UTRGV Chess Team members are: GM Vladimir Belous (2684), GM Kamil Dragun (2686), GM Andrey Stukopin (2683), GM Carlos Antonio Hevia Alejano (2569), GM Hovhannes Gabuzyan (2679).

GAMEPLAY The President’s Cup is an annual invitational team tournament open to the top four U.S. schools from the most recent Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship.

Unlike the Pan-Am, the Final Four is decided on game points, so each win or draw contributes to the team’s overall score for the tournament.

At the 2016 Final Four, UTRGV’s first time in the national contest, they placed second behind Webster 8.5 to 7.5.

Coach Grandmaster Bartek Macieja said he and his team felt strong and confident going into the competition, and on the way to the tournament, team member GM Andrey Stukopin said he, too, was confident about their chances of winning.

Standings at the end of the first round had UTRGV in the lead over Webster by half a point, but Webster gained ground in the second round to pull ahead of UTRGV by half a point.

Then, in a surprising upset, the final match between Webster and St. Louis ended in a draw, sealing the win for the UTRGV Vaqueros.

The victory is the Vaqueros’ first national championship.

“We have been chasing this goal since the program began at UTRGV,” a jubilant Macieja said. “The team stayed strong and kept fighting, and I am very proud of them.”

Marfa, TX Deep in west Texas, celebrities like Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian frequently visit this “middle of nowhere” town, for it’s off the beaten path feel. Thanks to the Chintai Foundation, Marfa is a cultural hub for art, and Music. Known as the “Austin of the West”, marfa is a small town, with a big city feel.

Main staples to see is the Prada Store, an art exhibit in the middle of the Texas desert, and, if you are luck, you might be able to catch the infamous Marfa Lights, known only to show up 10 times a year.

Number 1:

Terlingua, TX Known as a Ghost town, Terlingua takes this name to heart. With nothing but the Chisos Mountain range spanning as far as the eye can see, it is easy to forget you are still in Texas.

Featuring no Wi-Fi, no cell service, and even no Doppler radar, this city is perfect for those who truly want to “unplug” from the rest of the world. MERCEDES – Rodolfo Garcia a lifelong resident of Mercedes passed away in the presence of his family.

Rudy has now moved on to be with Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He died Jan. 17, 2018.

He enjoyed and touched many lives with his carpentry, a trade he was very proud of.

His craftsmanship and mastery of carpentry will continue to endure for the many families who enjoy the floors they stand on, the roofs they live under and the windows they enjoy seeing the world through that he made.

Sometimes a last name just didn’t work out. Square, a man I knew and flew with had the last name Round. He wanted to be known by Rounder. By the time he earned his spurs in the F-4 he found out there was already an established pilot who went by Rounder who was one in the street sense of that noun. So my friend Round took the callsign Square.

One that worked ;a man I knew and flew with once had the first initials of D.J., so he was Deej.

Weekly Update

A senior officer who had a predilection for surreptitiously flicking jalapenos off his nachos onto the floor, a no no among fighter squadrons, was caught and called a pepper flicker, shortened to Pepe. It stuck.

An excellent pilot , well known, of German descent was called Fokker.Another whose somber facial expression seldom changed was known by Toad, or the fighting toad.

Another had a Germanic last name that started with a K. Rather than say it all, three syllables, it was shortened to K-9.

He was well known in the Marine F-4 community and ended up with the most combat hops in Viet Nam for a RIO. An operations officer we had in combat, had the last name DeJong, so he was simply Dutch .

Aviation callsigns seldom used finesse, but often ready room wit. A friend whose last name was Lard became Crisco. A man named Bozarth became Bozo. A man, large in stature, and especially in the O clubs with his bar act became The Giant, or just Giant.

Some I never knew the etymology of. Our most senior man, our Group Commander in Viet Nam , used the callsign Joker. So he told me to call him that when we flew in combat together. He was a Colonel 0-6, a real one, not a Lieutenant Colonel 0-5.

And he was not funny despite his call sign.

But he did have a sense of humor.

Others: A dear friend had a hippie-type, left leaning girlfriend in the late sixties, unheard of for a young Marine pilot, so he became Pinko . One man was from Idaho, so he was Spud.

Humor was involved. One man who made a dumbstruck look when somebody said something really wrong about a tactic, or something on the plane, would stop, drop his jaw and pull a face.

An original callsign given in the old way: A new guy joins the squadron, right out of the training squadron. He has no call sign. We do it in the old Native American way. We take him into the intelligence room, blindfold him and hand him a secret supplement of Soviet aircraft pictures with names. Tell him to open to a page and stab his finger onto the page. It lands on a helicopter code named Hormone by NATO. From then on he was Hormone. Later he became Moan the merciless.

San Antonio – On March 24, 2018 the Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) hosted its 2018 Central Regional Collegiate Symposium at El Tropicano Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. The Symposium’s theme “Latino Millennials – Developing Your Strategy to Succeed” focused on how Latino students and professionals need to adopt a proactive and purposeful approach to building success in their careers. The ALPFA Chapter from The University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) was represented by a large contingent of students.

The collegiate symposium exceeded its registration numbers with over 430 students in attendance representing 7 states and 28 universities.

The students had a chance to meet and interview with all the sponsors who offered a variety of career opportunities and internships.

“It was so inspiring to see successful professionals from the Valley at the ALPFA Regional Symposium,” said Ryan Montero, a Junior at UTRGV. “This event reassured me that I have the ability of having a successful career in anything I want to do and anywhere I want to go.”

Gonzales, who lives in Austin, Texas, has accepted multiple invitations from student groups to speak on RGV college campuses. ALPFA student leaders are working out details for Gonzales to speak on both upper and lower valley campuses.

Many children attend annual Easter Egg hunt For more than 15 years the Mercedes Police Department has been organizing their Easter egg hunt for the city of Mercedes and surrounded area’s children to enjoy Easter and this year was no different.

The Mercedes Methodist Church offers its

grounds to host the community Easter egg hunt this year.

The event will have Easter baskets and prizes available for children to win.

The event had a DJ, free food and face painting.

Many children attended the Annual City of Mercedes Easter Egg Hunt. The long standing tradion started by the police Chief Olga Maldonado said the event offers families to come together to celebrate Easter and have an Easter Egg hunt for the children who 3would not normally have one at home.

One of his most recent repairs was for a guitarist who left his six-string with him to fix the guitar neck before his next show.

“We do repairing and I do a lot of electrical work inside the guitar,” Cano said. “We can make any guitar work.”

Cano said the shop is also full of Mercedes and rock culture that any music artist can appriciate.

The store has been open for nearly a month and the two are very excited to expand the buiness and music component to their music operation.

“Hopefully we get more students to come in,” Cano said. “We are doing guitar lessons, drums lessons and piano lessons at affordable rates.”

He said their current student has picked up learning the guitar very quick.

“She was learning the guitar chords, and parts of the guitar,” Cano said.

Bombing suspect ends own life as officers approach him AUSTIN — The primary suspect in a string of terrorist-style bombings died in his pickup truck on March 21.

Mark Anthony Conditt, 23, of Pflugerville, detonated explosive devices in his truck on an Interstate 35 access road in Round Rock as two law enforcement officers approached the vehicle on foot. One officer was injured in the explosion. The other officer reportedly fired a rifle at the suspect.

On March 19, two days before Conditt was tracked down, Gov. Greg Abbott announced the release of $265,500 in emergency funding for the Austin Police Department and the Texas Ranger Bomb Response Team to purchase seven portable x-ray systems for use in bomb detection and responding to suspicious package investigations.

Abbott said his office has provided nearly $1 million over the last two years to enhance the capabilities of the Austin police department’s bomb squad. He said the grants provided for purchases of bomb disposal robots, robotic arms and bomb suits that allow technicians to approach potentially explosive devices and render them harmless.

On March 20, the day before Conditt’s death, the Texas Department of Public Safety reminded Texans to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity or suspicious packages to authorities. The DPS stressed that Texans should not approach any unknown or suspicious packages or items, to keep a safe distance and then to notify the authorities by calling 911.

Big crowd joins march An estimated 20,000 people participated in the Austin “March for Our Lives” event on March 24.

Similar marches were held some 900 cities around the globe. At the main march, in Washington, D.C., participants memorialized the mass shooting at high school in Parkland, Florida, on Feb. 14, and other mass shootings, such as the ones at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut in 2010, and Sutherland Springs, Texas, in 2017.

Marchers and speakers at these events mainly called for an end to mass shootings through federal, state and local gun law reforms.

Jobs added in February The Texas Workforce Commission on March 23 announced that the Lone Star State’s economy

added 40,500 seasonally adjusted non-farm jobs in February, marking 20 consecutive months of employment growth.

Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.0 percent in February and remains below the U.S. unemployment rate of 4.1 percent.

Industries noted for adding jobs in February included professional and business services, 13,200 positions; followed by trade, transportation and utilities, 11,800 jobs; and mining and logging, 6,500 positions.

TxDOT: Buckle up, teens The Texas Department of Transportation on March 19 posted a message urging teen-agers to “always buckle up.”

The message is part of TxDOT’s annual “Teen Click It or Ticket” campaign, conducted in partnership with high school students, to urge young drivers and their passengers to wear their seat belts every time they’re in a vehicle.

“In Texas, 42 percent of all teenagers killed in traffic crashes in 2016 weren’t buckled up,” said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. “We know seat belts save lives, but only if motorists use them. We want to make sure this message gets through to teens, and no one knows how to reach teens better than other teens.”

According to statistics compiled

by TxDOT, in Texas in 2016, one in five vehicle crashes involved a teen driver. Of the 269 teen drivers and passengers killed in crashes that year, 114 were unbuckled.

AG asks program review Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on March 22 sent a letter to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar asking him to reverse the Obama administration’s exclusion of Texas from programs that provide family planning and related preventive health services to lowincome women across the state.

Paxton wrote that in 2013 the Obama administration removed Texas from the eligible list of Title X program recipients because it refused to provide taxpayer funds to abortion providers.

“A precursor to participation in federal programs should not be an uncompromising commitment to abortion providers. The freedom of conscience should never be demoted to second-class status among our civil liberties,” Paxton added.

Veterans celebrate Vietnam War Veterans Day together

T

he small patriotic town of Mercedes gathered to celebrate its war heros like they always do for every veterans holiday.

Only this time veterans of the American Legion J.A. Garcia Post 172 organized the town’s first annual Vietnam War Veterans Day. The event commemorated a day to honor and celebrate all soldiers who braved the enemy in the country so far away in a war that lasted nearly 20 years.

Three of the many soldiers who attended the event were the Garcia brothers.

Growing up the Garcia’s heard stories about World War II and the Korean War from their uncles Jose and Eliodoro Garcia.

And when it became their turn to serve in the military nearly 20 years later when their names were called to fight in Vietnam they continued a family tradition of serveing in the Army like their uncles before them.

The brothers said they each had different

jobs and never toured in the war at the same time like their uncles had.

They said they were happy to take part in a new tradition the American Legion was starting to honor Vietnam War veterans.

At the first annual Vietnam Veterans War Day veterans from around the area met at city hall for a flag raising ceremony and a breakfast at the American J.A. Garcia Post 172.

The Mercedes High School JROTC posted the colors the Veterans War Memorial and recited the national anthem at the event.

American Legion Vice Commander Juan Moya spoke about his experience in Vietnam and the welcoming soldiers received after their tours in the war.

Retired teacher Eddie Howell spoke during the breakfast and welcomed back veterans.

President Donald Trump signed the act stating March 29 as Vietnam War Veterans Day to acknowledge their service in 2017.

Each served at different times during the Vietnam War. Their uncles who served in World War II inspired them to serve their country.
