After flirting with the prospect of vetoing an omnibus spending bill because it fell short of funding for his proposed border wall, President Donald Trump on Friday eventually gave the go-ahead to the $1.3

trillion measure just hours before a possible government shutdown.

Though far short of the billions initially sought for the president’s “big, beautiful” wall on the country’s southern border, Trump’s sig-

nature on the bill means that some work will commence soon on one of his best-known campaign promises.

The students at the Si Se Puede Learning Center at Casa Saldana dedicated many Fridays after school for their special project. The students chose to support their local food bank, Baskets Full. Every Friday Miss. White would take all the students around the property to

ask the residents at Casa Saldana for canned food donations. Many people were very grateful and helped out as much as they could.

The students were able to learn about serving their community, just like the way Cesar Chavez dedicated his life to service.

Hello Mercedes! My name is Ben Hinojosa; I am a Mercedes native now living in San Antonio. On behalf of the Mercedes Enterprise, I would like to introduce the newest column, “The Enterprise Top 5”.

Here, I will be discussing the “top 5” items from categories like TV shows, Documentaries, Music etc. With that being said, lets kick this week off with: Top 5 Shows on Netflix.

Number 5:

Master of None (2 seasons) TV-MA

Aziz Anzari takes on multiple roles in this comedy hit. From producer, director to lead actor, Anzari portrays a typical New Yorker who is trying to understand his purpose in all of this. Sure to bring out some laughs, Anzari methodically uses satire to grasp the viewers attention, securing a 100% on rotten tomatoes, as well as thre Emmy awards and one Golden Globe.

I don’t know how many people who read the Mercedes Enterprise remember when Mercedes was dubbed the Queen City of the Valley. As a child, I just remember that phrase being associated with a city, just the other side of La Feria.

I also remember holding my nose as we drove by the city dump on Old 83. I was fascinated with the comings and goings of the trucks, but hated the smell. Later on, the dump was filled in and replaced with a pool and a civic center, a big improvement in my junior high years. My older sister even worked at the pool as a life guard.

I have childhood memories of saving my allowance from Christmas to March, just so I would have enough money to ride the rides when my mother took me to the stock show. It was a big deal to get to wear my new cowboy jeans, boots and hat when we went to the parade. There was always hope from my mom that those same clothes would last me two years, instead of just one, but that rarely happened.

Then I was graduated from high school and college and became a teacher. At first, I had the distinct opportunity to start work on my masters at Pan American University, as it was called back then. But, financial restraints led me down another path, and I began a career with Mercedes ISD at its high school location on Florida Avenue.

Since I was the only yearbook teacher for the majority of my tenure there, I came to know many people and businesses who supported our advertising efforts.

One of those businesses was Borderland Hardware, that is currently located on Old Highway 83, or Second Street as it is also known today, and not at the old main street location. It is amazing how much traffic that store does and how it has grown and expanded over the years.

Recently, the store’s outside sign welcomed visitors to the RGV Livestock Show and Rodeo.

There’s always something interesting to read on that sign, if you just pay attention.

When I was given charge of the high school newspaper, I had to return to college to earn a journalism degree, because while yearbook was not considered an accredited class at that time, newspaper was

another matter. It required an college degree, and I was fortunate enough to finish in just under two years at the urging of Mr. Al Smith, head of the English department.

He gave me my first real deadline, and I met it.

Borderland Hardware was there through all of my Mercedes experiences. As a teacher, I remember buying paint at the old store, with money the yearbook staff had raised. The students wanted to paint the walls outside our tiny classroom section. When finished, it looked like Joseph’s coat of many colors... distinctive, bright and colorful, easy to locate once you made it to the first of two English wings.

The staff at Borderland gave me advice on the type of paint that I needed and how to save information for the paint mixing machine, just in case I needed to buy more paint, which I did. They never got irritated with me, but were patient and listened. They were just plain awesome!

Over the years, that store personality hasn’t really changed at all.

Some of the faces may be different, but that’s about it. Someone is always there to greet you when you enter through the hardware store doors.

Doesn’t matter when you go... the day or the hour of the day... the customer is always greeted with a smile and a friendly hello.

If a customer runs into friends or former students and stops for a visit, people just smile and walk around the conversation to get to their destination... whether it is to find that one of a kind plumbing “thingie,” a storage box, an ordered item, or a gift.

Customers and staff alike just smile... and go about their business.

The same atmosphere can be observed in the parking lot. I know that I have waited up to five minutes, just to get out of my car, because people are visiting with friends and blocking my exit from the vehicle.

Our journeys throughout life take us many places. My personal journey with the owners and the staff at Borderland Hardware has always been pleasant. I have always been impressed with how they manage to keep on keeping on.

Just wanted those who read this newspaper to understand what a jewel Mercedes has in its midst.

House of Cards (5 Seasons) TV-MA

Starring none other than Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, House of Cards explires the interworkings of the American political system. Set in modern day Washington D.C., Spacey portrays Francis Underwood, a powerful politician who is anything but honest and will do whatever it takes to get what he wants. Along side Claire Underwood (Robin Wright), House of Cards details the complexity behind American Political Pundits.

Breaking Bad (6 Seasons) TV-MA

A chemistry teacher gone rogue. Breaking Bad follows the life of Walter White (Bryan Cranston). With his recent diagnosis of cancer and little in the bank account, Walter begins to take any means necessary to provide for his family.

Number 2:

Arrested Development (4 Seasons) TV-14 In this lighter comedy, Jason Bateman plays Michael Bluth, son of a Millionaire. After Bluth’s father ends up in prison, the Bluth family looses their entire fortune, causing Michael to pick up the slack as the head of household, helping his family assimilate into middle class living. Sure to pack the laughs, Bateman delivers a superb performance, scoring the show a 9/10 on tv.com and his own Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series

Stranger Things (2 Seasons) TV-14

Perhaps one of the best shows of the century, Stranger Things delivers frights, with a “Goonies” 80s style theme that is sure to be nostalgic. Following a group of Preteens, Stranger Things is a mystery thriller who’s plot packs in frights, entertainment with hints of comedy appealing to almost any population. After being nominated for countless accolades, Stranger Things is a must watch for even the casual Netflix user.

Weekly Update Our membership continues to increase and we should be at 100% (80 members). A Welcome Back to our new members. Additionally the attendance at our meetings is also improving. We had 17 members at our last meeting, that is quite an improvement.

The American Legion will host the 1st Annual Vietnam War Veterans Day in Mercedes. The pubic is invited to Mercedes City Hall for a Flag Raising Ceremony at 8:00 a.m.. After the ceremony breakfast will served for all veterans at the American Legion.

Reminder to all Members that we need all the help we can get every Friday for the Fish Fry which is an excellent source of revenue for the post. We start at 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. If you can help and contribute some time to the event please join us. Hope to see you there.

Burr and Ellen, Robbie and Chery lived above us for some time. the house we all lived in was then an apartment, until my parents bought it.

Burr and Ellen had found a house elsewhere.

700 Kansas became the Lentz home. all of us at that time were young in

one way or another.

I last saw Robbie at a multi-year high school reunion aboard the Lexington, Corpus, Robbie and I did not stay close but we knew each other well. as kids deer hunting in Starr county, we pulled tricks on our Dads.

I recall the day he was injured badly in football practice, a broken bone. he always loved automobiles and engines, made it his living, he knew his stuff. his passing, is personal, as he was part of my life in formative years, stunned me, is tough.

Robbie, we shook the Dads with the squeaking apple, didn’t we?

Less-invasive type of hip surgery now available in mid-valley A less-invasive type of hip surgery being performed in the Mid-Valley by Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Michael Sander is helping patients to be able to walk sooner without the assistance of walkers or canes, in many cases.

The “anterior approach” surgery at Knapp Medical Center is a different way for the surgeon to operate on patients who have pain from arthritis, and who need a hip replacement surgery or hip fracture repair. Under the anterior approach, the surgeon performs the surgery from the front of the hip joint, which results in less trauma to the hip muscles than some traditional approaches.

“This is a less-invasive alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery, as well as to hip fracture repair in some cases,” Dr. Sander said. “It allows the surgeon to lesson trauma to muscles and tendons while performing hip surgery. There is less damage to the muscle, because you leave the main hip muscles attached during the surgery.”

Dr. Sander said the procedure which is now available in the Mid-Valley can be beneficial

for patients with severe hip pain that interferes with their activities of daily life, such as walking and other activities. Many of these patients are suffering from arthritis, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.

Following the anterior surgery at Knapp Medical Center, many patients are able to be discharged sooner from the hospital and get back to their daily activities. “Patients are able to walk sooner without the assistance of walkers or canes,” Dr. Sander said.

“With the new anterior hip surgery, as soon as you are confident in your walking ability, you can shed those walking devices,” Dr. Sander added. “With most people, this happens within a few weeks. That compares to six weeks with traditional hip surgery, in which patients are essentially required to use a cane or walker or other device for six weeks while their muscles heal.”

During a press briefing Friday afternoon, Trump characterized the funding as a down payment on the project.

“We have a lot money coming to the border, and it will be coming over a period of time,” he said. “We funded the initial down payment of $1.6 billion. We’re going to be starting work – literally – on Monday on not only some new wall ... but also fixing existing walls.”

The bill will also fund levee walls in the Rio Grande Valley to the tune of $445 million, according to Washington-based environmental group Earthjustice, and $196 million for bollard fencing in the same area. More than $400 million will go toward repairing or replacing the existing border fence that was constructed after the 2006 Secure Fence Act. Several miles of fence already exists along the Texas-Mexico border, including in Hidalgo, Cameron, Hudspeth and El Paso counties.

But the omnibus bill signed Friday also includes language that blocks construction of a barrier in the Rio Grande Valley’s Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge, which U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, called a hard-fought victory.

“Keeping the border wall out of the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge was a top priority and the barring of border wall funds at the refuge will ensure that Texans and Texas wildlife can enjoy this habitat for years to come,” he said in a statement.

No DACA solution

The funding bill also leaves out a permanent solution for Dreamers, young undocumented immigrants whose future status in this country is uncertain after Trump eliminated an Obama-era program that granted them protection from deportation. The 2012 Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program affords certain undocumented immigrants a two-year work permit and protection from deportation.

In his news conference Friday, Trump didn’t mention that his administration nixed the program, which included 1240,000 Texans, last year. He instead called out Democrats for what he said was their failure to move forward on the issue.

“DACA recipients have been treated extremely badly by the Democrats. We wanted to include DACA, we wanted to have them in this bill,” he said. “The Democrats would not do it.”

Two separate federal courts have ruled that the federal government must continue accepting renewals, though new applications can’t be submitted. But U.S. House Democrats said Dreamers shouldn’t have to rely on two temporary court orders to feel confident they won’t be deported once their current status expires.

“By not including a permanent fix for Dreamers in the omnibus, the President and Republicans have prolonged this self-inflicted crisis and have left Dreamers in limbo and at the mercy of a temporary court injunction,” U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, D-New Mexico, said in a statement. “We must find a permanent solution to protect hundreds of thousands of young people who contribute billions to our nation’s economy from the threat of deportation.”

During the press conference, the president made clear he wasn’t happy with Congress forcing his hand, and asked lawmakers to pass legislation that gives him lineitem veto power in the future.

“I say to Congress: I will never sign another bill like this again. I’m not going to do it,” he said.

Appellate court’s ruling on immigration law AUSTIN — Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on March 13 praised a ruling by a panel of the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals upholding a new state law that bans sanctuary cities.

The Legislature enacted Senate Bill 4 in 2017 to set a statewide policy of cooperation with federal immigration authorities’ enforcement of the nation’s immigration laws.

“I’m pleased the 5th Circuit recognized that Senate Bill 4 is lawful, constitutional and protects the safety of law enforcement officers and all Texans,” Paxton said. “Enforcing immigration law prevents the release of individuals from custody who have been charged with serious crimes. Dangerous criminals shouldn’t be allowed back into our communities to possibly commit more crimes.”

The ruling also drew reactions from several lawmakers, including state Rep. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas, who serves as chair of the Mexican American Legislative Caucus.

“SB 4 will continue to jeopardize the safety of Texas communities by forcing our local police officers to enforce federal immigration laws instead of keeping families safe. From day one, this law was racially motivated for political gain against the will of local law enforcement and to the detriment of thousands of immigrants who work, live and call Texas home,” Anchia said. “The decision today doesn’t mean that SB 4 won’t lead to abuse of power against Latinos and immigrants. In fact, it likely means citizens’ civil rights will be violated before we can stop this unjust law in the courts.”

A U.S. District Court in San Antonio granted a preliminary injunction of SB 4 on Aug. 30, two days before the law was scheduled to take effect. On Sept. 25, a threejudge panel of the 5th Circuit ruled that Texas could enforce key provisions of SB 4 while it appealed the lower court ruling. On Nov. 7, Paxton’s office presented its oral argument before a panel of the 5th

Circuit in defense of SB 4. Paxton’s office is the key enforcement agency for SB 4 and is accepting complaints regarding entities that violate the law.

At least two deaths resulted from the detonation of explosive devices in packages placed at Austin residences.

Investigations by law enforcement have been in progress since citizens unwittingly picked up or opened the packages, causing the deadly detonations.

Gov. Greg Abbott on March 12 issued a statement following what he termed “multiple package bombings,” saying, “As the investigation continues, the State of Texas will provide any resources necessary to ensure the safety of our citizens and quickly bring those guilty to justice.”

Abbott also said his Criminal Justice Division is offering a reward of up to $15,000 for information leading to the identification and arrest of anyone involved in the deadly blasts. To be eligible for a cash reward of up to $15,000, tips must be submitted to Texas Crime Stoppers using one of the following methods: Attorney General Paxton on March 16 applauded the First Court of Appeals of Texas after it ruled that Waller County lacks jurisdiction to sue a private citizen who complained that the county unlawfully banned firearms from its government building.

Paxton’s office filed a brief in the case, arguing that it should be dismissed.

Adame III’s going to the next level

MERCEDES – Roger Adame III was in his hospital bed, immobile and thinking.

The Rio Grande Valley and number 39 defensive player of the year as a junior the previous season for the MercedesnTigers – maybe for the first time – was scared.

As his dad, and football coach Roger Adame II, walked into the room, Adame III looked at him and said “I don’t want to do this anymore.”

Adame III had just broken his right arm in the season-opening game against Calallen.

It was a serious break – to the point that doctors told him his season, his high school career, was more than likely over.

Five games later he was back on the field.

Six months later, last week, he signed his national letter of intent to play football for Division I Incarnate Word in San Antonio.

“We didn’t know if this day would come or not because there are no guarantees,” The Tigers head coach said. “Actually, to see it take place is one of those surreal feelings.”

Then the dad hat slowly made its way

Roger Adame III signing his letter of intent to play college football at the University of Incarnate Word. Next to him are his mother and father Olga and Roger Adame Jr. and pushed aside the the coaching hat – just for a few seconds.

“It all started when he was younger – he knew what was expected. He was raised in the fieldhouse. I didn’t know any other way. I thought that was the best way, lessons he would learn in the fieldhouse would carry him over,” Adame said, before his voice cracked a little and he slightly stepped away from the interview. “Wow, this is going to be tough.”

His injury was major. He broke the humerus on his right arm. It was a spiral fracture – “broken in half and twisted.”

“He was told by his doctor that his season, his high school career, was over,” said his mom, Olga Adame. “I’ll never forget that date, 9-1- 17. But he was so determined. It’s amazing to be here today on March 21 after remembering 9-1- 17. But that’s Roger.”

When he had the tiny moment where he didn’t want to continue, his dad’s reply was nothing but supportive and, above all, loving. “I’m with you – this was never something I pushed

on you and will never push on you. Rog, that’s the last thing, don’t worry about that,” Adame II recalled. “I knew he was upset and going through some stuff.

It didn’t take long for the senior linebacker to regain the confidence that came as a junior with 21 sacks in 12 games (the team had 45 total), 108 solo tackles, 141 total tackles and 32 tackles for losses (next two highest TFLs combined for just three more – 35) for the team's physical, mental and spiritual leader. He missed just five games – something he didn’t even think was possible as he lay in that hospital bed, almost immobile.

“I was having a hard time just getting up from the hospital bed, that alone was a big accomplishment,” Adame III said. “Once I got up and started walking I would feel a little better day by day. I was tracking the days on my wall like Day 21 and Day 22 and everything I did that day. I was getting ready and getting read to get back to practice and I was going to play again.”

Adame Sr., said it was through extremely hard work and perseverance that Adame III got back on the field. But football is a way of life for the Adames. The Adame senior coached his two sons, and his daughter – he even coached his future daughter-in- law Olga in softball.

Then he coached with his son – he as the as the offensive line coach and Adame II on the opposite line.

“We’d go against each other every day and I come home and bring my work home and be pissed. It was time for me to get out of there.

“But with Roger’s injury I couldn’t react – but his mindset was to work hard, to get pissed and get back on his feet. He told me it was time for him to go back and do what he was meant to do. I didn’t think it would be possible – then all of a sudden there he was playing – wow.”

Adame III will be part of a Cardinals team that plays in the Southland Conference and went 1-10 last year. In December they hired a new head coach and since have added a new defensive coordinator an a new linebackers coach, among others.

“I’ve been waiting on this for a long time,” he said. “It’s been a long journey.

I’m excited about this. God is good.”
