HOMECOMING 2025
Agatha Orozco Gonzalez ‘28 October 17, 2025
One integral part of high school culture is the age-old tradition of Homecoming! Homecoming always falls right around the end of the autumn sports season. Some of the festivities include exciting volleyball games and a piethrowing pep rally. Following these events is the long-awaited Homecoming Dance: a night of our wonderful students, athletes, and alumni “coming home.” This year’s theme, decided by Student Council President Violet Dutton, Vice President Kairi Castro, as well as the rest of the Executive Board, is a masquerade ball! Here’s what they shared about it: the Homecoming Dance is on Friday, October 24th, from 710pm in the Cafeteria When students get there, they will get to enjoy masquerade themed decorations, a photo booth, dancing with all of their friends, upbeat music, and high school guests that we’re thrilled to welcome from other schools There will be light snacks provided There is a semiformal dress code (cocktail dresses or suits). There are no dress code color requirements, but the decor will be black and red. Feel free to bring your own masquerade mask! This year, in addition to the Homecoming Dance, our seniors have arranged a Homecoming Pep Rally. It will host fun activities as part of a fundraiser that goes towards the Senior Class Fund! If you want to help out the current seniors and the seniors to come, come join us!
We hope the students have a spectacular Homecoming! Remember, have fun and don’t be afraid to get out there and dance! It’s sure to be an unforgettable night.

TMLA COLLEGE FAIR!
Monica Naula, ‘28
Lissa Poitevien, ‘28 October 2, 2025
October is such an eventful month at TMLA featuring numerous events like its annual college fair This year's college fair buzzed with excitement as upperclassmen packed the cafeteria, eager to explore their options for their future Representatives from many various colleges and universities engaged with students, discussing campus life, academic programs, support services (including tutoring and counseling), housing options, financial aid, and the requirements needed to attend their chosen college, among other things. Students asked many questions, and had a wide range of colleges to consider including the State University of New York (SUNY) and the City University of New York (CUNY). Beyond the New York State schools, students had the opportunity to speak with representatives from private universities, out-of-state universities, outof-state colleges, and specialized institutions With the diversity of many colleges and universities, students at the fair left with handfuls of brochures and contact information about their desired destinations
Ultimately, TMLA’s college fair was such a success! It created an atmosphere of enthusiasm and curiosity as students eagerly interacted with representatives and learned more about their future possibilities While we weren’t able to capture pictures due to the large number of students attending, many expressed excitement about discovering new schools and gaining a clearer sense of direction for life after graduation. The day reflected TMLA’s commitment to preparing students for success beyond high school and inspiring them to approach the future with confidence and ambition. We wish the seniors luck with their college applications!
MOVIE NIGHT!
Mari Stamps ‘29 October 17, 2025
On Friday, October 3rd, our school had our first whole school wide event which was a movie night held on the Senior Lawn All grades had the choice to vote between different movies like Mean Girls and Back to the Future In the end, the majority of the votes went to the movie Coraline. As well as having a variety of different snacks for students to buy, the school rented a Mr. Softie truck so we could have ice cream while watching the movie. The movie night was open to both high school and middle school students and became an amazing way for all students to interact with each other. To get another perspective on how students like the movie nights I interviewed freshman Angelina Cotrina to see how she likes the movie nights, if she would go to another one, and what other school events she is interested in.
Hunter College and York College Repersentatives
Q: “Would you go to another movie night?”
A: “I would definitely go to another movie night!’
Q: “What other school events are you looking forward to?”
A: “I am looking forward to the pep rally and homecoming, also the walk-a-thon and spirit week.”
Q: “What do you think the next movie for a movie night should be?”
A: “I feel like it should be a new movie that is coming out that not many people have watched yet!”
Between the movie chosen and the cool weather, this event helped marked the beginning of fall for the school community. This event was a great start to many school events to come that will bring our community closer There are many other movie nights yet to come throughout the school year, including one near Halloween and potentially some during the holiday season before Christmas Break These events are a great time to socialize with peers, hang out with friends you might necessarily have classes with, and de-stress from all of your school work It’s very important to keep our community together and through these we can come together. I hope to see you at the next movie night!
XC COACH INTERVIEW!
Sophia Estevez ‘28 & Shannon Watters ‘28 October 15, 2025
As TMLA’s fall sports season comes to an end, we wanted to introduce our community to the newest member of the Cross country team–Coach Rolando Ramos. Coach Ramos is a graduate of Kellenberg Memorial High School and the University of Scranton, where he committed to running Cross country and Track & field at a Division III level.
Coach Ramos believes that committed runners should be training 6-7 days a week, including a long run which is 25% of their weekly mileage. Consistency is the most important part of running to see improvement over time
Following the end of TMLA’s Cross Country season, Coach Rolando has plans to begin training and preparing for the Marines as well as OCS (Officer Candidate School) We hope you enjoy this article about our amazing coach!
Sophia Estevez: Please state your full name.
Rolando Ramos: Rolando Ramos
SE: Where are you from?
RR: I’m from Hempstead, New York
SE: Where did you attend high school and college?
RR: Kellenberg Memorial in Uniondale and University of Scranton in Pennsylvania.
SE: Do you have any titles or reach any impressive goals during your high school or college career, either academically or athletically?
RR: Yeah I got my accounting degree, which was pretty cool. I was happy my Freshman year of college, I only got one year to race and workout but I was able to get some PR’s (Personal Record). I was also happy with my Freshman 8k which was 28:06
SE: Why did you choose to coach at TMLA?
RR: So a couple of things were happening in my life I was supposed to go to the military in early September. I was supposed to be there right now in Quantico, Virginia. But life happens I had an injury and I wasn't too sure what I was going to do I have this thing where I always want to work on something, in this case I couldn't work on strengthening physically but I thought I could work on my leadership So I think coaching may be the closest thing to leading Marines
Shannon Watters: Do you think your college training influences how you coach TMLA’s cross country team?
RR: Absolutely. When I got to college I didn't even have running shoes; I had indoor soccer shoes. I didn't know what a VO2 Max was, and I didn't know about long runs I was literally just a soccer kid who happened to be on track and I hit some decent enough times to run in college. But running in college was really what gave me the knowledge about running
SW: What values do you have as a coach that can assist in training great runners?
RR: My approach is about building the habits and giving people the resources because it's ultimately up to them what they decide to do with the resources. I didn't have a lot of the knowledge that I’m sharing with my current team while I was in high school. I didn't know about long runs, mobility, or injury prevention.
Coach Roland Ramos
SE: What should XC runners be doing on a weekly/daily basis to improve their times?
RR: If you're a serious runner you're running six days a week and you're doing a long run and that long run is 25% of your weekly mileage. So if you're running 50 or 40, then 10 miles is 25%
SE: What qualities do you like about TMLA’s XC team?
RR: Oh boy! Oh boy! While this program is the smallest and most underfunded program I've ever been a part of–high school and college–it does have a family kind of culture I didn't see in college or high school The parents are very involved; there's more comradery and a close, tight knit family culture.
SE: Do you think that a family-like connection is important for our team to have?
RR: I think this team loses a lot without its family-like culture.
SW: What are some of the biggest challenges this team has faced this year, if so how did we or can we overcome them?
RR: Aww man It's a struggle trying to keep people consistent and making the right choices It's the little things, not really the big things.
SE: Is there anything our team can do to improve?
RR: Yeah. We need to be consistent and show up while increasing our mileage with long runs.
SE: Which meet or race this season has stood out to you the most, and why?
RR: Six Flags because that is usually around the time where teams need to start PRing, and we had 14 people PR. It was very vindicating to see that the training up to that point had been working and those that didn't PR we can point to with precision the exact reasons why they didn't PR We want clarity and we want to see improvement–we saw on that day.
SW: What goals do you have for our team moving forward and long term?
RR: Moving forward, as you guys saw today, I increased the mileage a bit The warmup was a little longer These next two or three weeks are going to be huge to have extra mileage
SE: What are your plans for after this Cross Country season?
RR: After this Cross Country season, I’m going to start training again and start preparing for the Marines for OCS (Officer Candidate School).
FOOLS OR CREATIVE GENIUSES? TMLA
GENESIANS GETS READY TO PERFORM THE
Alexandra Anthony ‘27
October 17, 2025
Foolishness may not be deemed as something valuable nor creative, but Genesians, the theater club of The Mary Louis Academy, is ready to change all that! For the yearly fall play, the club is getting ready to present their version of Fools, a comical play by the acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Neil Simon. First performed on Broadway in 1981, Fools gained great popularity through numerous school theater performances throughout the decades - and now it is TMLA’s turn to take the baton.
Many things set Fools apart from other plays performed by Genesians in the past - one of them being the setting While most Neil Simon plays - some of which have already been performed by Genesians in the past - are set in the United States, Fools takes place in a small village in 1890 Ukraine Therefore, those who decide to see the play will be exposed to traditional music, colorful costumes, and great interpretations of the Ukrainian accent.
Another thing that differs Fools from most other plays is the unusual, fairytale-like plot The main character, teacher Leon Tolchinsky, is excited for his new job as a teacher - only to discover that not a single inhabitant of the village he has arrived to shows any sign of intelligence As the play moves along, the unusual storyline is coupled with numerous jokes and puns.
As someone who is in the play herself, portraying the character of Sophia Zubritsky, I can definitely say that nothing makes me happier than the anticipation of our show. In the words of one of the characters, “my heart is pounding with excitement ” The play is something that has given us yet another reason to come together as a school community, with every person in Genesians doing their best to try to make our show a success Our unity is something I will surely think of later in life, recalling my high school years. Genesians (as it is my third year in the club) has also given me the opportunity to grow, first as a spotlight operator, and now as an actor I could not have been more grateful for the club’s existence.
There will be two performances of Fools - on Friday, November 21, and Saturday, November 22nd If you want to support your peers, enjoy an evening full of humor and TMLA spirit, and find out what the benefits of milking a cow upside down are, I definitely recommend you to see the show!

FROM STRESS TO SUCCESS: SAT TIPS!
Isabella Ostrowoski ‘26
October 17, 2025
Taking the SAT soon? Here’s some tips from someone who's taken it!
Although the SAT may seem scary, trust me when I say it isn’t as bad as it seems. Even if you’re having an off day when you first take it and get a score you’re unhappy with, another upcoming test is always available for you to register for. Many schools are test optional, so if you’re not that confident in your test taking abilities, it’s okay if you end up not sending your score However, it’s better to take it a few times in case the school you do want to go to requires or highly suggests sending them
Prior to testing day, take time to review material that is commonly on the test, especially ones you may not have known. Taking practice tests and vocabulary flashcards is a good idea to help your brain prepare for the actual testing day On testing day, wake up early and have a good breakfast. I’m not joking when I say that the key to success on these types of tests is a good meal beforehand For the test itself, optimize your time by skipping what you don't know and then going back to it Make sure to use the bathroom before the test begins and to bring a snack for your break or after it ends.
Remember, this isn’t as scary as it seems you’ve got this! Good luck!
PSATADVICE AND TIPS!
Vanessa Filardo ‘28
October 15, 2025
Some may look at the word “PSAT” and think that it’s the end of the world and they won’t get into their dream college that they’ve been eyeing on However, the PSAT doesn’t necessarily count for anything towards grades or college applications. It’s just a practice test that shows what areas you’re good at and what areas you may need some more help on Usually it would be the sophomores and juniors that take it, but this year, the freshwomen and the eighth graders joined the party. The juniors already know what to expect, but the under-classwomen, not so much
As someone who has never taken or looked at the PSAT in her life, it’s understandable to freak out and be extremely nervous about what the test is going to look like and how good or bad you might do However, overthinking isn’t going to help anybody, let alone yourself. The only thing that you can do is believe and have confidence in yourself, even if it’s something you may not have learned, try anyways It’s better to try to at least make an effort to answer most of the questions than to sit there thinking about your fate. My own advice is very basic and everyone might tell you this, but take your sweet time and don’t panic. Taking your time and reading the questions carefully may get you a very long way. Not freaking out and being able to control yourself can get your hopes up a bit, and maybe the test won’t be as bad as you may think it may be
The PSAT has some pretty strict rules about what’s expected out of you. We won’t be discussing them that much yet, but first I would like to give out one of my own rules Use the scrap paper provided to you as much as you possibly can. To me, the more work you put on the scrap paper, the more I think whoever is judging your test will appreciate it because it shows that you tried Now, one of the most important rules that I think the PSAT will give you is that you must stay in the room at all times (well unless you need to use the restroom, of course). You must also stay completely focused. Even being unfocused for five seconds can get all of the information out of your brain and you’ll be flooded with complete nonsense.
Overall, CollegeBoard does not want you to panic at all with this test The SAT is necessarily more important than the PSAT because it actually counts towards college, but some may not even see it So when you walk in that room, keep your chin up, take a deep breath, and remember these words: “Done is better than perfect.”
Good luck and remember to try your best!
HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH!
Melis Cavdar ‘28
October 18, 2025
Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th to October 15th each year to recognize and honor the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. It’s a time to appreciate the diversity within the Hispanic community, which includes people from countries such as Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and many others across Latin America and Spain. This month reminds us how Hispanic traditions, music, art, language, and food have shaped the world we live in today and continue to influence American culture in powerful ways.
At TMLA, we celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in meaningful and exciting ways. Each morning, we listened to fun facts about Hispanic countries and famous Hispanic figures who have made a difference in history. We also listened to Spanish songs that highlight different musical styles and artists from across Latin America. These moments that taught us something new each day gave us the chance to truly appreciate the beauty and diversity of Hispanic culture. In addition, TMLA will host our annual Culture Harmony Festival, where students will celebrate their backgrounds, share traditions, and show pride in their heritage Overall, Hispanic Heritage Month at TMLA was not only educational but also inspiring. It continues to remind us of the importance of unity, respect, and cultural appreciation in our community.

SPOTIFY FEELING DRY, THEN LISTEN YO OUR BACK TO SCHOOL PLAYLIST !
Briana Alexis ‘26 October 16, 2025
The transition between summer vacation and coming back to school while also being thrown back into 10 months of classes can be stressful. In times of stress and worry, music can be something that helps eliminate some of that stress. That’s why I decided to share a few songs from a playlist I created for the back to school season!
The first song is “Golden, ” from the Netflix film KPop Demon Hunters. It places emphasis on being your true self, no longer hiding who you really are, and to have your moment to shine like you’re meant to. Make this school year your year, as this school year is your time to show just how capable you are! As you navigate through this school year, be true and sincere to yourself and others. Though this school year may offer some challenges, just know that you’ve got this and you’re gonna be golden!
This next song, “Next Semester, ” by Twenty One Pilots is a personal favorite of mine. Sometimes, the pressure of school and its workload can be overwhelming and intense. This intensity can make us feel anxious and make it difficult to conquer a challenging workload. Perhaps we didn’t perform as well as we hoped during this quarter. Even if there isn’t much we can do to improve our grades as the quarter reaches its end and we can’t change what we’ve done, we can always have a fresh start next semester!
“Start of Something New, ” from High School Musical, is a song about trying and experiencing new things. For the freshwomen, it’s your first time experiencing high school and all it has to offer! For the sophomores, this school year may include a more challenging courseload, as well as no longer being the youngest at TMLA. For the juniors, it’s your first time as upperclassmen and starting to think about and prepare for college. And for the seniors, it’s your first time being the oldest in the school and having a ton of senior responsibilities, such as college applications and research papers. However, don’t let all of these responsibilities make you afraid to try something new, like learning how to play a sport or a musical instrument, joining a club, or taking classes that are challenging!
The next song is “School Life, ” by Stray Kids. This song details the schedule of an average school day and the feelings of boredom and exhaustion that school may sometimes bring For students, school can either feel repetitive, unnecessary, or an annoying part of their day. These feelings may be something that’s relatable to a majority of students, ranging from elementary school students to college students, and especially high schoolers But despite all the negatives, school has some positive aspects, such as getting to meet lifelong friends, an opportunity to discover your passions and interests, and providing a stepping stone for future careers you may end up pursuing!
“Heat Waves, ” by Glass Animals is another favorite of mine Even with its feel-good and uptempo vibes, the lyrics also hold a deep meaning. It’s a song about realizing that you can’t make everyone happy and that it’s okay to fail or be defeated by something. Throughout your school career, there may have been times where you failed a test or didn’t grasp a topic as well as you needed to in order to be successful Or maybe you brought home test results that your parents weren’t happy with. Don’t let that discourage you or hold you back. Realize that you don’t need to be perfect at everything and it’s okay to make mistakes or fail, because that’s how you learn and grow!

As we slowly ease into another exciting school year at The Mary Louis Academy, we are looking forward to new memories, new friends, and new goals Best of all, we are so excited about the most important change this year For the first time in almost 90 years, a new group of young girls are being welcomed into our family: The TMLA Founderesses of our brand-new middle school!
TMLA’s mission has always been to promote unity, all-inclusive love, and reconciliation to high school students, but now that mission is being extended to younger students! Girls in grades 6-8 will have the opportunity to learn and grow in the same halls that many of us have come to call our second home It’s very important that they’re put into an environment where they can feel comfortable and thrive These years make a huge difference on the rest of their lives and what career paths they’ll pursue
At The Mary Louis Academy, we are encouraged to embody confidence, creativity, leadership, and to step out of our comfort zone As a current high school student, here’s some advice for our little sisters that I would’ve loved to hear at that age:
DON'T BE AFRAID TO ASK QUESTIONS! There’s no such thing as a “silly” question There’s always going to be someone willing to help you GET INVOLVED! Try out sports, clubs, even go to more school events! You’ll get to meet new people while also possibly finding a new hobby to enjoy
BE YOURSELF! TMLA is a place for you to be whoever YOU want to be Nobody should feel like they’re supposed to be perfect Be unique! MAKE A NAME FOR YOURSELF! Be bold and stand out If you have a suggestion, make it known! Everybody deserves to be able to find something they’re passionate about and to be able to represent that in school as well
The Founderesses, despite being new, are already a part of something special here at TMLA and we are already rooting for them These girls will get a head start in building strong study habits, lifelong friendships, and bold leadership skills We are excited to watch them grow here and make their own mark on our community

THE WITCH’S SPELL
BY: VIVIEN A VARGAS, ’30
Claire’s heart was filled with jealousy when her best friend, Lucy, got picked up from school from her mom. Lucy waved goodbye, and Claire clenched her fists to keep all her anger inside. “Finally!” thought Claire when she saw her grandma on the block ahead. She shoved her backpack into her grandma’s hands and ran the two blocks to her home alone.
Inside the house, she touched the picture of her and her mom, and went up the stairs to her room. Her mom was a white witch, very altruistic. But Claire, not so much. Her heart was full of revenge for the world. Claire opened up her math workbook and started doing her homework.
No more than 5 minutes passed when her grandpa called her Her grandpa was a teacher for 1st grade He loved Claire more than he let on, even though they rarely spoke to each other He would do little things like giving her candy, or writing notes in her lunchbox to show his affection Claire’s grandpa asked her if she could go to the park and collect 2 caterpillars for a project he was going to conduct in class Claire nodded, grabbed her coat, scarf, boots, and a jar and went out the door The cold air caught Claire off guard, but she wrapped her scarf tighter, and continued walking In a few minutes, she was at the entrance of the park. Not a lot of people were at the park, since there were rumors that it was haunted. No one dared to visit it during Halloween. Her neighbors all said that when someone went into the park, they never came out quite the same. Claire didn’t care. Life had thrown harder things at her and a “haunted” park didn’t scare her- she had faced far worse in her years.
As Claire went up a hill she found 2 black caterpillars all alone. Claire knew what it was like to be lonely and an outcast. At least the two caterpillars had each other. Sure, Claire was friends with Lucy but Lucy was very bossy and always bragged. Claire only hung out with Lucy, since none of the other girls knew what to say around her anymore. She (Claire) picked up the two caterpillars and laid each of them on a separate rock. Then she placed a stick between both rocks, so that the caterpillars were able to cross to the other rock by walking on the stick Claire kept playing with them and in a few minutes she had a caterpillar circus In fact, Claire was so entranced by the caterpillars that she forgot all about her grandpa until she glanced at her watch and saw the time She knew it was time to go back home and give the caterpillars over to her grandpa The caterpillars softly wiggled in her hand, spelling out “goodbye” “No!” yelled Claire Then she quickly glanced around to make sure nobody heard Like anyone would be in the haunted park Suddenly, Claire had this overwhelming feeling that the caterpillars were the only thing in the world that would truly stay with her till the end. They wouldn’t leave her.
Claire picked up the two caterpillars and gingerly put them in the jar. A weird glow surrounded the caterpillars. It was a purple-blue glow, pretty but eerie. Then, she ran back home. As she opened the door, she saw her grandpa putting on his jacket. Her grandpa’s face turned into a scowl, and he exclaimed, “Where have you been? I was about to go looking for you!” Before Claire could answer, her grandpa plunged into another complaint. “Do you know how dark it’s getting outside? You could have gotten hurt! You might think that nothing can hurt you anymore because you’ve already been through so much, but bad things can still happen!” After he had calmed down, he asked
if she had found the 2 caterpillars he asked for. Claire lied and said no. There was something about the caterpillars that made Claire want to keep them.
Claire’s mom's spell book was red. One rainy day, when Claire was exploring the house, she had found a black spell book about black magic in the fireplace She always kept it hidden in her bookshelf Claire recited, “Magiae tenebrarum vi, has erucas incantare soleo ” a spell in Latin, to the caterpillars After that, she carefully put the caterpillars in a terrarium that used to hold her pet spider The next day when she woke up she saw the caterpillars in a black cocoon. And when she came back from school, to her surprise, there were 2 black butterflies in the terrarium.
She whispered a secret mission to them, and the butterflies flapped their wings in response. For Claire knew, they understood. That night the butterflies flew around the neighborhood. Each flap of their wings made kids instantly fall asleep. Every single kid, except Claire.
The next day, on the way to school, Claire found it very silent No yelling kids, no basketballs bouncing Even though Claire could not hear it, in each home there was a sound of parents weeping At school, the teacher, rednosed and with a hoarse voice exclaimed that she was lucky and told her to go back home. When Claire arrived back home, her grandparents embraced her and would not let go. They told her what had happened over night, and that she is so lucky that nothing happened to her.
For the next few days, Claire enjoyed the silence. What was there to not like about it? No kids awkwardly looking at her, no bragging from Lucy, no complaints from the teachers This silence continued for about a week The streets were so silent, you could hear a feather fall The sidewalks so clean, not a tiny drawing that was made with chalk could be seen Claire did not mind one bit
On Friday, Claire was going home with 2 market bags full to the brim with beans and rice when she saw the tree. The tree that contained Claire’s height. Whenever Claire’s birthday came around, Claire’s mom would mark her height on the tree with liquid juice from a red berry. It was a tradition- one that Claire could never bring herself to do after the incident. Exhausted by the memory and the weight of the bags, Claire sat down and leaned on the tree.
As she closed her eyes to rest, a vivid memory came rushing into Claire’s mind She was in the hospital beside her mom Her mom was telling Claire how much she loved her Then the monitor beside her mom started making sounds She remembered how she kept saying, “ Wake up mommy!”, “Wake up mommy!” With a start, Claire opened her eyes.
Then Claire saw her mom. Her mom said. “ Oh Claire, I love you so much! I may not be able to be with you, but I’m always in your heart no matter where you are. Don’t ever forget that!” In a blink, she was gone, but not from Claire’s heart.
Soon, Claire started to cry It was a happy cry, full of joy that her mom had not forgotten her With each teardrop that slid down Claire’s cheek, kids around the world started to wake up That day, Claire vowed to never ever use black magic again. The two black butterflies, no longer having any sadness to feed on, died. This is the story of a girl who turned to evil for consolidation, but was saved by love.
